Gluten-free diet may have ‘unintended consequences’ for health … – Medical News Today

A new study suggests that a gluten-free diet may pose serious health risks, after finding that the eating pattern may raise the risk of exposure to arsenic and mercury.

Study co-author Maria Argos, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal Epidemiology.

A gluten-free diet excludes foods that contain gluten - a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, as well as the byproducts of these grains.

For people with celiac disease - an autoimmune condition whereby gluten intake leads to intestinal damage - a gluten-free diet is the only treatment for the condition.

However, according to a 2012 survey, around 28-30 percent of us restrict our gluten intake or avoid consuming the protein completely, even in the absence of gluten sensitivities.

Rice flour is a common substitute for gluten in many gluten-free products. Argos and colleagues point out that rice can bioaccumulate arsenic, mercury, and other potentially harmful toxic metals from water, soil, or fertilizers.

Exposure to these metals has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other diseases.

"Despite such a dramatic shift in the diet of many Americans, little is known about how gluten-free diets might affect exposure to toxic metals found in certain foods," note the authors.

With the aim of investigating the link between gluten-free diets and toxic metal exposure, Argos and team analyzed the data of 7,471 individuals who were a part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2009 and 2014.

The researchers identified 73 participants aged between 6 and 80 who reported following a gluten-free diet.

Blood and urine samples were taken from all participants and assessed for levels of arsenic and mercury.

The researchers found that levels of each toxic metal were much higher among subjects who followed a gluten-free diet than those who did not eat gluten-free products; mercury levels were 70 percent higher in the blood of gluten-free subjects, while arsenic levels in urine were almost twice as high.

According to Argos, these findings suggest that there may be "unintended consequences of eating a gluten-free diet," though further studies are needed to confirm whether this is the case.

The researchers add that:

"With the increasing popularity of gluten-free diets, these findings may have important health implications since the health effects of low-level arsenic and mercury exposure from food sources are uncertain but may increase the risk for cancer and other chronic diseases.

Although we can only speculate, rice may be contributing to the observed higher concentrations of metal biomarkers among those on a gluten-free diet as the primary substitute grain in gluten-free products."

Argos points out that there are regulations in Europe that limit arsenic levels in food products, and he suggests that the United States might benefit from similar regulations.

"We regulate levels of arsenic in water, but if rice flour consumption increases the risk for exposure to arsenic, it would make sense to regulate the metal in foods as well," he adds.

Is Your Diet Fighting Depression or Intensifying It? – Big Think

Scientists have recently become aware there's a connection between our gut and our brain. But just how deep does this connection go? Could we, say, treat depression just by adopting a Mediterranean diet? A new study suggests, yes.

Doctors have been prescribing diets to their patients as a preventative measure against heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and now depression joins that list. We now have real evidence to back up whats good common sense: that eating well doesnt just benefit your body, but it also benefits your brain, says Columbia professor Drew Ramsey, who wrote, Eat Complete.

Ramsey represents a growing group of mental health experts who practice nutritional psychiatry. The idea of a gut-brain connection is one that has been gaining ground in scientific studies and some have started putting these ideas into practice. There's evidence to suggest certain foods influence the bacteria in our gut, which in turn influence mental health.

Its also important to note about 95 percent of your bodys serotonin is made in your gastrointestinal tract. Scientists are just beginning to discover this secret life of microbes and how much they influence other aspects of our overall health and wellbeing. But we can influence our microbiome with what we eat.

The brain is also directly affected by diet. Tryptophan is the amino acid that we use to make serotonin and dopamine, Ramseytold uswhen he came to Big Think.These are very, very important mood-regulating and learning-regulating neurotransmitters, or chemicals in the brain. And so the idea is to give people a core set of foods. You know, again, with every bite you're getting all the nutrients that your brain needs.

Researchers from Australias Deakin University led a controlled clinical trial which gives promising results towards suggesting dietary improvement guided by a clinical dietician may provide an efficacious treatment strategy for the management of this highly prevalent mental disorder. The researchers recruited several hundred patients with moderate to severe depression, 67 of whom participated in a 12-week parallel group trial. All participants had poor dietary quality when they entered the trail, meaning they ate empty carbs and nutrient-sparse foods, like pizza, pasta and baked goods what Ramsey terms the "beige diet" or the "12-year-old boy diet".

Ramsey explains the trial result that is exciting for the future of mental health treatment:

"The augmentation effect was quite robust for an adjunctive treatment. In the treatment group, about 32% of patients achieved remission, compared with 8% in the control group. In terms of risk-benefit profiles, a dietary intervention is emerging as a very safe and effective way for us to engage our patients."

The promising meal plan has been coined the Modi-Medi Diet or modified mediterranean diet and consists of legumes, leafy greens, colorful vegetables, a variety of quality seafood, quality lean red meat, fruits, olive oil, and nuts.Ramsey emphasizes that the quality of food, in particular of meat and seafood, is important which is often an area of concern for people trying to make a positive diet change: organic food is expensive. During the trial, the Australian researchers actually found that eating the right foods for optimal brain health is cheaper. "The average Australian spends $138 a week on food. Those who were taking part in the study spent just $112," says Ramsey. What is it about these foods that boost brain function and mental health? They contain nutrients the brain needs, specificallyomega-3 fats, zinc, magnesium, iron, and vitamin B12, which are "highly correlated with a lower risk for depression and dementia."

Its important to note, the field of nutritional psychiatry is still new, so you should not use this diet as a substitute for consulting a therapist if you feel depressed.

Should You Try The Adele-Approved Diet Everyone Is Talking About? – Huffington Post

Forget Whole 30 theres a new fad nutrition plan in town.

Its called The Sirtfood Diet, due to its emphasis on eating foods rich in sirtuin protein, which some researchers saymay activate genetic pathways to burn more caloriesand alsohelp slow down the aging process in animals. The diet became popular in the United Kingdom after nutritionists Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten published The Sirtfood Dietbook in 2016.

There are reports that singer and all-around angel Adele, may have jumped on the diets bandwagonat the influence of her personal trainer, Pete Geracimo, who is a big fanof the program as well.

Dark chocolate and red wine are allegedly sirtfood-approved. This is due to the fact that they contain resveratrol, an antioxidant that may activate sirtuin enzymes. (However, theres some debate in the scientific community as to whether or not thats actually true.)

So, should you be Googling Sirtfood Diet shopping list, immediately?Not so fast.

According to the book, the diet has two phases.Phase one is seven days long. For the first three, the authors encourage you to max out your food intake at 1,000 calories a day, consuming only three green juices and one meal composed of foods rich in sirtuins. This is significantly below the calories recommended even for weight loss, which hover between 1,500-1,600 calories per day for women and 2,000 calories for men, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Phase two is 14 days long. Those following the plan are encouraged to eat three sirtuin-rich meals a day and have one green juice.

According to David Levitsky, professor of nutrition and psychology in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, the research about sirtuin protein shows that it might be possible to burn more calories at a cellular level.

However, heres the catch: Nothing has been proven this effect could occur throughout the body. The cellular level is the very beginning of a process and there is no science that suggests it will change how your body operates. So, in a nutshell, this nutrition plan is nothing more than a low-calorie diet sold with the veneer that a drastic change to your metabolism is happening.

There is no evidence this works at the whole-body level, Levitsky told The Huffington Post. I guarantee you would lose weight. In the end of every diet, it is always about calories. But does that mean its the healthiest choice for you? Probably not.

That being said, some of the Sirtfood Diet-approved meals looked downright delicious. Well take a smoked salmon omelet or a buckwheat pasta saladfor brunch any day of the week. But losing weight and keeping it off can be done on several hundred more calories a day, juice cleansing excluded.

This Busy Mom’s Hack To Make Time For Fitness: Work Out With Her Baby – SELF

When personal trainer Danielle Jones had her first daughter, Honor, two years ago, working out became a totally new ballgame. Joneswho goes by Ms. Boston on Instagramdidn't have a problem motivating herself to hit the gym. But the new mom didn't want to leave her newborn behind while she worked to shed her baby weight. Her solution: Incorporate Honor into her workouts.

She started working out at home with Honor, doing things like push-ups down to her level, giving her kisses after each rep. She'd do sit-ups, too, with Honor sitting on her stomach, getting a kiss each time she crunched her core. And she'd do squats, holding Honor as a weight . For Jones, it was a game changer.

"It became part of our playtime so I didnt have to feel like I was depriving my child and neglecting her just to work out and worry about myself," Jones tells SELF. "I included her in it. It was like, Hey, you helped me gain this weight, so youre going to help me lose it. Were in this together."

Jones did these mini at-home workouts with Honor exclusively for the first ten months following her pregnancy. And Honor loved it. "It made it a lot easier seeing how much she enjoyed it, because she loved it," Jones says. "When I used her as a weight even when she was two months old, she would laugh."

Even after Jones got back into the gym for her regular workouts, she and Honor kept at their home workouts , too. Honor quickly progressed from watching her momand serving as a handy weightto mirroring the workouts alongside her. "The older she got the more she started copying me, and now I look over and see her trying to do the same thing," Jones says.

Today, Jones shares photos and videos of the duo working out on her Instagram, @ msboston . And it's pretty cute stuff. While Jones breaks a sweat, Honor does toowith her own flair added to the moves, of course. "Well be doing push-ups and half the time shes not doing a push-up shes doing a plank," Jones says. "But hey, she thinks shes doing it and one day she will be able to do it. Practice makes perfect."

Jones is working on a fitness calendar featuring her and Honor, and she one day hopes to open a mommy-and-me gym. If she does, Honor seems like she'd make a pretty good fitness coach. "Now it's to the point where shes like, Mom, we didnt work out today! Are we going to work out?" Jones says. "Its something she knows is a part of her life."

Is New Balance’s RunIQ fitness smartwatch a rival to Apple Watch … – CIO

CIO.com's resident reviewer, tech addict and fitness fanatic James A. Martin puts the latest apps, mobile devices, health gadgets and wearable technologies through the paces.

New Balance is looking to win the fitness smartwatch marathon with its recently introduced Android Wear-based RunIQ. But how does it compare to Apple Watch Series 2, which is also fitness focused and shares some core features such as built-in GPS and heart-rate monitoring? I wore both for more than a week to find out.

RunIQ is $300, while the least expensive Apple Watch Series 2 is $369.

RunIQ has a similar perforated band comparable to Apple Watch Nike+ (also $369 and up), the Nike-branded version of Apples Series 2 smartwatch. Both bands are comfortable to wear. But RunIQ feels heavier and bulkier on the wrist.

No wearable Ive tested and Ive tested quite a few has a better screen than Apple Watch Series 2. Its bright and easy-to-read in any circumstance, including outside on a day with bright sunshine.

With RunIQ, I needed to crank the brightness level up to 4 or 5 (the latter is the highest setting) to easily read the screen under sunny skies. Unfortunately, the brightness bump can be a serious battery drain.

Example: I went for a 30-minute run using GPS and heart rate tracking with RunIQ fully charged. After the run, the battery was at 76 percent; the brightness level was 5.

New Balance says the 410mAh battery should last 24 hours, or up to five hours when using GPS and heart-rate tracking.

Imagine that youre ready to run. You step outside, tap the running icon on the RunIQs home screen, and wait for the watch to fix on a GPS signal. In my tests, the wait was typically between one and three minutes. When youre running in inclement weather, three minutes feels like 30.

Now imagine youre wearing an Apple Watch. You step outside, say Hey Siri, start a run, and within a few seconds, youre ready to go, and so is the GPS. It doesnt get any easier than that.

Its worth mentioning that RunIQ has three buttons: one to start/stop a run or cycling workout; one serves as a home button; the third controls laps or music. Apple Watch has two.

In my tests, RunIQs heart-rate monitoring was on par with Apple Watch Series 2 in terms of heart-rate accuracy.Both looked pretty on-target, but chest straps like Polar's H7 usually offer the most accurate consumer-grade heart-rate sensor.

RunIQ enables you to download and play music on the watch and listen to tunes via Bluetooth connected headphones/earbuds (Android only). You can do the same with Apple Watch.

One possible advantage for RunIQ: Jabras NB PaceIQ Earbuds ($110). The wireless earbuds include a dedicated button that, when pressed, gives you on-demand workout stats, when paired with RunIQ. (I wasnt able to test this feature.)

The round RunIQ has an attractive, black case/black band masculine look. More band color options will be available in mid March. I prefer all the case color and band choices you get with Apple Watch, but its a matter of personal taste.

At least for now, any iPhone user looking for an Apple Watch alternative should hold off on buying RunIQ. There are simply too many features Apple Watch offers that RunIQ currently doesnt. For example, you cant add apps to RunIQ via your iPhone. And only Android users can take advantage of the watchs built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Android Wear 2.0 will bring additional features to iOS and Android users. RunIQ doesnt support Android Wear 2.0 at the moment, though an Intel spokesman said the New Balance watch will support Android Wear 2.0 this spring. (Intel developed RunIQ in partnership with New Balance.)

Vance fitness center is a key in ensuring airmen measure up – Enid News & Eagle

VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. With health and well-being of airmen in mind, the Air Force has set strict fitness standards for active duty and Reserve members.

Each airman must pass a physical fitness test consisting of aerobic, muscular and body composition elements.

For the aerobic element, airmen must complete a timed 1.5 mile run; for the muscular element, they must do as many push-ups and sit-ups as possible in separate, one-minute periods; and for body composition, they must have the circumference of their abdomens measured. All components must be done in a three-hour window.

Standards for passing the 100-point test are based on age and gender, with age groups broken into 10-year increments. In most circumstances, tests are administered annually. Scores of 90 and above are excellent, 75 to 89.99 satisfactory and less than 75 unsatisfactory.

If they score a 90 or better, its yearly, if its less than a 90 it is every six months, said Kellie Jensen, fitness program coordinator at Vance Air Force Base Bradley Fitness and Sports Center.

To help airmen pass their fitness tests, as well as to promote healthy lifestyles, the Vance fitness center offers a wide variety of programs.

We have educational classes, we have incentive programs, we have group exercise classes that are actually designated as fitness improvement program classes, which means they are sufficient enough to help you prepare for a PT test, said Jensen.

Among the classes offered are strength training, spinning, yoga, PiYo, Zumba and Turbo Kick. A natural running clinic also is offered.

Its all gait analysis, said Jensen. We look at their running form and try to offer corrections and show them what good running form should look like.

Jensen and Joel Urdang, health promotions program coordinator at Vance, offer a running class consisting of their top 10 tips for runners.

Its not necessarily intervention for a failed PT test, said Urdang. That could be somebody who is doing great on their PT test but they say, Let me see if theres something in that top 10 that I could add to my toolbox.

Jensen also develops individual workout plans for airmen.

Beginning each January the fitness center offers a program called Soar Into Shape, which focuses on helping participants develop healthy lifestyles.Soar into Shape participants are awarded points for meeting weight goals of losing, gaining or maintaining weight, healthy eating routines and regular exercise.

If an airman fails the PT test, his or her commander can order specific interventions, said Urdang, depending on where help is needed. If an airman fails the run portion, Jensen will meet with them for a cardio intervention, while there will be a strength intervention if they fail the push-up/sit-up part of the exam. If the airmans waist circumference does not measure up, Urdang will perform a healthy weight intervention.

Theres also another option, although we encourage commanders never to make it the only option, said Urdang. Theres online training that can be included as one of the interventions for a failed PT test.

If smoking is a factor in a failed fitness test, Urdang will meet with the airman and discuss the tobacco-cessation program he directs.

They cant require someone to quit smoking, but they can encourage them to explore it because maybe they failed their run time, Urdangsaid.Most of the work that I do from the health promotions side is more lifestyle change, getting people to think about reducing some of their risky behaviors related to lifestyle-related diseases.

According to experts, you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose one pound. This number might look daunting, but calories lost add quickly when you consider everything you accomplish during the day.

Here are seven daily activities that help you drop those pounds:

1. Parenting

You burn 204 calories an hour by being a mom. Giving your child a bath, playing with them and picking up toys is a lot of work, but just remember, youre losing weight while you're at it.

2. Sleeping

If you like naps, I have good news for you. Did you know your risk for weight gain increases when you dont get enough sleep? Too little sleep causes insulin sensitivity to decrease, increasing the likelihood of weight gain. Lack of sleep also makes you more likely to reach for caffeine, or prevents you from taking an evening stroll. Adults should get at least seven to nine hours of sleep every night, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

3. Shopping

Studies show that the average woman will walk two miles while shopping. If you go to the grocery store once a week, youll walk about eight miles a month. Walking for one mile burns 100 calories, so think about how much you can burn from a day of running errands!

4. Vacuuming

If you have kids, you probably find yourself reaching for the vacuum daily. It might even be several times a day if you always find crumbs in the couch cushions. One hour of vacuuming burns 238 calories, experts say. Just remember this next time you grab the vacuum for the third time on those crummy days.

5. Cleaning

Everyday household cleaning such as wiping down countertops, sweeping the floor and straightening up the living room burns 102 calories every 30 minutes. Theres another reason to keep a tidy home.

6. Chewing

The more you chew your food, the more weight youll lose. Chewing leads to proper digestion, which prevents food from accumulating into fat. Also, eating slower allows you to satisfy your hunger sooner, resulting in less food consumption.

7. Eating breakfast

One study tracked people who lost 30 pounds or more, and one shared behavior was eating breakfast. Those who eat breakfast tend to consume fewer calories, less saturated fat and lower cholesterol compared to people who skip breakfast, according to Healthy Eating.

Eating breakfast also helps your body feel energized and satisfied, making you less likely to overeat that day. So next time you think about skipping breakfast, grab some yogurt or blend a smoothie instead.

Dont feel guilty if you didnt have time to squeeze in a workout today. Youre already exercising by accomplishing your daily tasks.

Award winning investigative science journalist and cofounder of the Nutrition Science Initiative Gary Taubes discusses the detrimental effects that excessive sugar consumption has on people, and how excessive may be actually a lot lower than you might think. Taubes is the author of the new book, "The Case Against Sugar."

For years, dietary fat and salt shouldered the blame for causing heart disease and high blood pressure. But, according to Taubes, the body of evidence supporting that blame is insubstantial. Instead, he points to another culprit: sugar.

Taubes attributes the rise in sugar consumption and subsequent rise in obesity and diabetes in the U.S. to the increased popularity of low fat diets that often substituted fat for sugar in the 1980s.

Coinciding with the beginning of the [obesity] epidemic, [refined sugars and grains] had become in effect heart healthy diet foods, Taubes said. The government was even pushing the food industry to create low fat products, and in order to make those low fat products tasty, the food industry was replacing the fat with sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

Taubes distinguishes between added sugars and naturally occurring sugars, like those you might get from fruits or vegetables.

For instance, when we consume the sugar in an apple, a medium sized apple, about 85 percent water, what isnt water is fiber, which we dont digest, and then sugar and fructose, Taubes said. Most of the apple is water and fiber, which slows down the digestion of the sugars. When you eat an apple you get a relatively small dose of sugar and you digest it slowly.

Taubes emphasizes the importance of acknowledging that a diet that might benefit one individual might not benefit another. He is of the somewhat controversial belief that people who suffer from obesity or diabetes should avoid eating fruit altogether, because, according to him, the negative effects from the sugar and carbohydrates in the fruit will outweigh the benefits.

We give public health advice in this country to everyone equally as though they all should be eating the same diet, Taubes said. One of the things Ive been arguing is that in obesity and diabetes, even though fruit would be harmless if not benevolent to a marathon runner, its not doing any favors to an obese or diabetic individual.

For those who arent obese or diabetic, Taubes acknowledges that a little bit of added sugar is not hazardous, but he doesnt encourage it. He likens the philosophy of everything in moderation to allowing recovering cigarette addicts to continue to smoke, so long as they dont go overboard.

Smokers will tell you, they cant imagine life without cigarettes any more than the rest of us can imagine life without smoking, Taubes said. We dont say too many cigarettes cause lung cancer, we say cigarettes cause lung cancer. We dont advise smokers to smoke in moderation, we advise smokers not to smoke.

Taubes holds what he calls another controversial opinion: that reducing overall caloric intake wont decrease weight. Rather, he places the blame for causing people to be overweight on the type of calories consumed, an unsurprising opinion for the author of a book titled Good Calories, Bad Calories. Specifically, Taubes says the calories that pack on pounds are those from refined carbs and, of course, sugar. He recommends opting for a high-fat, low-carb diet along the lines of the Atkins diet instead.

Taubes is cautiously optimistic about the future of high-fat, low-carb diets, with some doctors already embracing the diet. In order for it to become fully mainstream, he says, medical organizations will have to acknowledge that they made mistakes. He says finds it difficult to imagine theyll do so, but remains positive that the diet will catch on.

Im hoping this will be revolution from the bottom up, because patients and individuals can go on these diets and see how well they work themselves, Taubes said. Physicians can see that they can finally make their patients healthy rather than giving them drugs to resolve their symptoms.
