The 5 Diets Project: Everyone lost, and everyone gained – Charleston Gazette-Mail (subscription)

MARVIN JOSEPH | The Washington Post

Five Washington Post staffers plan to try five diets in January to see how they work. From left: Food and Dining Editor Joe Yonan, Local Living Editor Kendra Nichols, food critic Tom Sietsema, Deputy Food Editor Bonnie S. Benwick and sportswriter Adam Kilgore.

A month ago, five Washington Post staffers embarked on a 30-day diet, each looking for a way to reset their eating habits. Now, theyre turning the page, but this is much more than a tidy endpoint: Its the beginning of making their new, healthy habits stick.

This month-long challenge wasnt a contest per se, and there is no one winner; all the staffers made their chosen plans work for them, and each has good results to show for it. Collectively theyve freed themselves from unhealthy habits and adopted positive ones; they have been enjoying more nutritious foods and less hyper-processed, sugary stuff; they have been eating more sensible amounts more mindfully; and they feel better and have lost weight.

But, predictably, life also got in the way of some of the goals they set with house moves, IRS audits, traffic jams, travel and irresistible parties interfering with their best intentions. I spoke with each of them to get their main take-aways from this diet experiment, and help them strategize all-important next steps. I also managed to convince them to let me check in with them next January to see how they have fared a year later.

If you started a diet on Jan. 1 like they did, or otherwise made resolutions to live healthier, this is an invitation to pause, reflect on your successes and, perhaps, dreams dashed over the past month and recalibrate your plan so you can keep moving forward. Hopefully, the insights shared here will inspire and inform your own next steps.

Kendras wise words to those thinking about the Whole30 diet is to be smart about planning when to start. For her, this challenge was smack in the middle of a move, making it more stressful and difficult than it otherwise would have been.

Being between homes and unable to locate the right cookware amid all the boxes, she found it nearly impossible to achieve one of her main personal goals: trying an array of new recipes. She also told me she was crankier than usual, to the point where her co-workers dubbed her diet persona Whole30 Kendra.

But she admirably stuck it out, and lost 9 pounds in the process. Along the way she learned, among other things, that it suits her to eat a hearty breakfast so she isnt hungry again until lunchtime, and that she can live happily without a vending-machine sugar fix or the 20-ounce diet soda she had been drinking daily.

Kendra has done Whole30 before, and does well with a strict set of rules to follow. The downside has been that when the diet is over, she is left rudderless and winds up returning to her old habits. Last time she did Whole30 she skipped the reintroduction phase (in which you gradually add back the forbidden foods) and went straight to cake.

This time she is thinking more long-term. Shes going to view the suggested reintroduction as an extension of the rules, following the specific 10-day transition the book offers. Even more, Im going to make myself a little rule book to follow thereafter.

This personal, formalized structure will go a long way toward helping Kendra achieve what she called her ultimate goal: making moderation the new normal.

Tom sees food though a somewhat different lens after following the Weight Watchers program for the past month. The plan makes you aware of the consequences of different choices, he said.

Having been allotted 36 points a day, Tom quickly learned that some foods, like what became his go-to snack, almonds and clementines, offer more satisfaction for fewer points than, say, peanut butter-filled pretzels. And that sometimes you have to choose between a cupcake and a second glass of wine.

While he wont continue to track his points, he says, Doing it a full month, it gets drilled into you. ... Now I know what to do. Besides making smarter choices, he also knows that exercise is a key component, and he is committed to keeping it up regularly.

He also knows its okay to go off the rails a bit once in a while. Confronted with some fabulous restaurant meals (as he frequently will be as the Posts food critic) and a once-in-a-lifetime charity event, he indulged, but even did that mindfully, choosing oysters instead of prosciutto and staying conscientious about portions.

In alignment with the Weight Watchers philosophy, he says: You can splurge just get back on track right after. Enjoy it, mindfully, then forget about it. Dont feel guilty.

Sure, Tom could have lost even more than 7 pounds this month without those splurges, but I believe the experience of being able to get back on track, and the knowledge that you can continue toward your goal weight and indulge, is an even more valuable achievement in the long run.

Joe is the only one of the five who plans to continue his diet indefinitely, a testament both to the flexibility of Buddhas Diet with its only limitation a nine-hour time window for eating and Joes balanced approach to it.

I worried he would be weak from hunger at his morning workout (so he could eat a later dinner) or eat a 5 p.m. dinner alone at his desk rather than with his significant other, or get pulled over for speeding and try to explain to the officer that he had to rush home to eat on time.

But although Joe did skip eating before his workouts, he felt fine doing it, and although he had to pass on grabbing a late bowl of ramen with friends one night, he found it easy enough to plan ahead so as not to sacrifice the social pleasures of mealtime.

His sage advice: The overarching philosophy is to have a mindful relationship with food, so dont get too anxious about a few minutes here or there. The worst thing would be to let the deadline make you scarf your food down.

In the past 30 days, he has broken the habit of mindlessly munching after dinner, has realized he doesnt have to grab for food at the slightest twinge of hunger and has lost 5 pounds.

I couldnt have done this without tea, he said. Tea helped slow his pace and calm him as he sipped, and because it is allowed outside the nine-hour window as long as it doesnt have sweeteners or milk.

Another key strategy was preparing food ahead, stocking his refrigerator on the weekends with building-block ingredients such as blanched and roasted vegetables, so he could quickly pull meals together on the weekdays.

Once Joe reaches his goal weight (he has another 25 or so pounds to go), his maintenance plan is to add a second cheat day. From what I can tell, Joe has landed on a sustainable way of life that fits him perfectly.

Bonnie is officially sold on soup. The words soup diet sound a little crazy, she said, but its a food that everyone should eat every week its a good go-to.

This month has helped Bonnie reach her main goals of eating more vegetables and getting portions in check. At first she worried the soups wouldnt be enough, but found the opposite to be true. (The volume of vegetable-based soups and the fact that their heat slows you down make them especially filling.)

The big takeaway is her realization that she can be satisfied without overeating, and she now is more in touch with how food makes her feel. She also has stopped eating past 9 p.m.

Her long-range plan is to make soup every week so she always has it on hand. She is also going to pay attention to how she feels as she eats, savoring slowly, and tuning into her level of satiety rather than continuing to eat just because her mouth wants more.

Bonnie wasnt weighing herself this month, but she recently bought a scale so she can track her weight as an incentive and an indicator and if she gets off track, she will do another week of the SouperGirl Cleanse to reorient her. She also has an exciting event to inspire her to maintain these healthy changes: her sons wedding in October.

The notion that you can slip up and then move on gives Adams plan the potential for longevity. He did that a few times this month, with restaurant meals and vacations that drove him off-plan. But his core changes focusing on healthful whole foods, limiting alcohol and exercising more still led the way, and he has dropped 16 pounds as a result.

His positive attitude of embracing the good choices you are making rather than yearning for what you are missing also goes a long way toward his success.

Adam told me the realization that it doesnt have to be all or nothing that he can see results even if he dips off his plan here and there gives him a good template for how to keep this going after April, when he typically returns to his weight-gaining spiral.

I pressed him to come up with specific strategies to put into place at that time, and he outlined this sensible three-pronged approach: 1) weigh in at least once a week; 2) exercise at least twice a week; 3) avoid alcohol for at least two days a week.

Adams overall advice to those embarking on a healthier way of life is simple but profound. Its something we could all make our mantra year-round: Whatever choice you are making, make it a good choice. Then do it again.

Exercise and a healthy diet help prevent Type 2 diabetes | Mountain … – Mountain Xpress

Buncombe County, like much of the nation, has a diabetes problem. The diseasewas ranked as the 10th-leading cause of death in the countyin the 2015 Community HealthAssessment, an annual gathering of data from residents to determine local wellness in relation to state and national averages. While there are numerous reasons why this has become an epidemic, the assessment found that23.5 percent of Buncombe adults are obese, and that just over 30 percent of students in K-5 public schools are overweight or obese, factors that increase the incidence of diabetes.

The good news: Asheville-area health professionals say there are affordable and accessible ways to address this growing risk for generations young and old. A wealth of information, diet trends and practiceshas emergedto address weight loss and the prevention of diabetes.

Christin Banman, a registered dietitian with Mountain Kidney and Hypertension Associates, is accustomed to dealing with the factors that lead to diabetes, Type 2 in particular. You immediately have to get into the home life situation with these issues, she says.Who does the cooking? Whos in the house? The majority of her patients have fought weight gain, high blood pressure and long-standing medical issuestheir entire lives. Their multiple problems create the onset of Type 2 diabetes, she says, which in turn causes kidney malfunction due to higher levels of blood sugar.

Banmans advice for someone who has contracted the disease and is seeking reversal of the diagnosis is similar to that shed offeranyonewho is prediabetic. She recommends affordable and simple dietary solutions that include buying frozen vegetables for cost and longevity, avoiding most beverages in favor of purchasing foods, buying grains in bulk, and shopping at Aldi and other affordable markets in their area.

Watchingyour weightis key to help preventing Type 2 diabetes, Banman says. I really feel like if someone can jump start or hit the restart button with the sugar busters or Atkins diet just to get an initial amount of weight off, Im a supporter of that. I think the long-term benefits of just getting a little bit of weight off exceed the consequences of that diet.

I think what were dealing with is whats referred to as a toxic food environment, where we have heavily marketed, very inexpensive, unhealthy foods on every corner in hospitals, airports and even in our school systems, she continues. This food environment surrounds us. So its hard for me to argue with someone who says, The croissant sandwiches were two-for-one on the way in. With someone that has limited food money, that speaks. So thats part of the food environment were dealing with.

Diabetes and lifestyle

Type 2 diabetes affects 29.1 million people in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The most common causes for the onset of this illness are obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, age, family history, high blood pressure and a high alcohol intake, according to WebMD.

Diabetes causes blood glucose levels to rise above normal. When people eat, their bodies turn food into glucose, or sugars, for their body to use as energy. The pancreascreates the hormoneinsulin, which allows those sugars to get into the cells of the body. But with Type 2 diabetes, thebody is no longer able to use its own insulin as well as it should, causing sugar to build up in theblood.

In 2014, the North Carolina State Report nameddiabetes as the seventh-leading cause of death in the state, the fourth-leading cause for African-Americans and the third-leading causefor American Indians. In WNC, the rate of white people living with the disease is highest, at 11.6 percent, while the rate of African Americans in the eastern part of the state is 15.3 percent.

Harvard UniversitysPATHS (Providing Access to Healthy Solutions) report for North Carolina in 2014outlined how legislation could mitigatethe disease, including a mandate for insurers to cover diabetes-related services as well as the creation of a unified public health system to providewhole-person care. The PATHS report is funded through Together on Diabetes,a philanthropic program of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, and was launched in 2010 to improve the health outcomes of people living with Type 2 diabetes bystrengthening patient self-management education, community-based supportive services and broad-based community mobilization.

Short of legislative measures, how can the millions of Americans seeking to control their weight and improve their health avoid Type 2 diabetes?

Dr. Daniel Stickler of the Apeiron Center for Human Potential in Asheville relates the illness tolifestyle. Type 2 diabetes is not truly a disease, he says.Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle aspect. You can progress to the point where you actually poison your beta cells in the pancreas after years of being Type 2 diabetic, but it really is a lifestyle. Weve seen plenty of reversals on people that were diabetic or prediabetic that changed their lifestyle and completely reversed the disease without medication.

Stickler saysthat a whole-person approach is needed. Apeiron uses that approach, looking closely at a persons genetics and at about 75 different genomic variations that help predict appetite, hunger and nutrient selection from fats to carbs and proteins.Apeiron tailors diets specifically around a persons genomics, goals and experiences to create a program that is individualized, rather than using a diet from a book.

The problem that you run into is that when you diagnose someone with a disease, they become the disease, Stickler says. The title becomes them, and until they can get to the point where they understand they are not Type 2 diabetes, youre not going to make any progress with them. Were treating it with these medications that arent treating the core cause, which is lifestyle. Its OK to bridge that to get things under control, but the whole focus needs to be on treating the core cause, which is a lifestyle component that has created an insulin resistance in the body. And it is easily reversible.

We have epigenetic coaches that work with clients and read their genetic data, looking at 500 genetic variations and working with sleep, stress, nutrition, exercise and human movement environment, thoughts, etc. So were venturing into all realms in how we address health.

Ways to approach diet, exercise

Banman notes thatMedicare initially covers only three hours a year of dietary intervention and just two hours annually thereafter. This is where support becomes very limited, she says, adding that a majority of her patients arediagnosed in their mid-60s, which makes it difficult for them to get up and get moving. In addition, stress from finances, work and family are debilitating factors, pushing diet and exercise to the bottom of their priorities. Im struck with the layers in their lives that are making things so complicated, and Im very sympathetic to it and help however I can, she says.

Stickler and Banman both recommend the Mediterranean diet, which is in concert with the diabetic diet, according to Banman, and which research has consistently shown to bean effective way to also reduce the risk of heart disease, lower low-density lipoproteins (or bad cholesterol) and lower risks associated with cancer, Parkinsons and Alzheimers diseases.

The American Diabetes Association outlinesa Mediterranean meal plan on itswebsite. Key components of the diet, according to the Mayo Clinic, are limiting red meat;eating fish at least twice a weekand otherwise primarily plant-based food, whole grains and nuts; replacing butter with olive oil; and using herbs and spices instead of salt.

In Buncombe County, residents can address stress, exercise and dietthrough the Diabetes Wellness and Prevention Program offered by the YWCA, a program designed specifically for adults with or at risk for Type 2 diabetes. Preventive health coordinatorLeah Berger-Singer saysthatparticipants are given a gym membership, bimonthly personal training, aweekly support group (which discusses health-related topics such as living healthy on a budget) and tips onstress management. Were aiming to provide access to people that may not otherwise have access to a gym, cooking classes, swim lessons and other options, she says.We also provide monthly dinner lectures or lunch and learns, hands-on cooking demos, field trips and other extracurricular activities.

Chiropractor and yoga instructor J. Anya Harris of Crystalign Chiropractic in Asheville saysthat stress-reduction techniques coupled with group exercise can be keys to combating many diseases, including diabetes.Getting out of your routine and your house and away from your cellphone is really important, she advises. Her approach with patients is to address both spinal health and overall physical health, as well as stress and energy levels. Chiropractic care helps to create arange of motion and mobility, freeing up the body to get patientsto the point where they feel good enough to exercise again or continue exercising, she explains. It also opens up the neural pathways that keep the organs, muscles and spine balanced, she adds. With the energy work, Im shifting relationships and trauma to give them the spark to get them moving. Its all about setting up the mind, body and soul to help them feel at ease in their own skin and really define their why. If you dont know your why, then none of it matters, because you wont stay consistent. The why will give them reframing in their consciousness that will keep them moving toward their goal.

What lies in our diets Part 1 – Star2.com

Theimpact of modern fake news as it relates to the recent American presidential election is something that struck a lot of people as unconscionable and ridiculous but try telling that to the misinformation experts or the new president who concocted all sorts of lies for their own profit or ego.

Fake news isnt new and has been around practically forever as examples: to promote Christianity, Jesus was constantly misrepresented as a white man (this still continues even today), and politicians, businesses and espionage agencies have always used subtly managed misinformation.

Regardless of politically-influenced fake news, the world has also been ploughing through another barrage of contemporary fake news for decades and this heap of plausible half-truths, aptly termed as pseudoscience, can influence the diets, medications and health of millions.

Lets start by asking why pseudoscience is often believed. There are several answers, all of them relatively simple, but mainly it is because pseudoscience targets and validates peoples desperation, fears, personal beliefs or aspirations.

Other reasons are ignorance, sheer gullibility, lack of objectivity, inability to think critically, laziness and stuff like that.

There is also the Dunning-Kruger Effect where people with inadequate knowledge develop a delusional superiority about subjects they do not understand this is possibly a worthy subject for another article.

The main intention of pseudo-science, as with fake news, is to invoke either hope, outrage or fear so that people would become less sceptical and more inclined to believe in the following waves of pseudoscience the second, more sinister aim is usually to sell people something they do not need.

The exact origins of these odious lumps of pseudoscience are not always obvious once a pseudoscience wave starts, hundreds of websites may suddenly appear in google searches and even your social media might get flooded.

The only certainty about most pseudoscience is that it is a strategy to make money, especially from gullible or desperate people.

The cosmetic industry is one riddled with pseudoscience there are creams with diamond peptides, for example, which cost small fortunes even though there is clearly no such thing for peptides are short biological chains of amino acids whereas a diamond is pure carbon and the two cannot react as there are no free hydrogen bonds in diamonds.

Whereas the food industry is often keen to hide various artificial ingredients in its labelling, the cosmetic industry seems to love labelling all sorts of spurious meaningless items added in tiny proportions, especially if they have complex or fake (self-invented) chemical names.

Just be informed that most cosmetic creams are based on simple emollients which are either oil- or water-based and ridiculously cheap to produce.

Pseudoscience is often confused with bad science but there is a significant difference. A couple of cases of bad science are the Eskimo diet and its alleged efficacy against heart disease, and also the supposed link between ingesting saturated fats and heart disease.

Both these subjects were covered recently in this column and the connections were found to be erroneous and examples of confirmation bias and imprecise scientific analysis.

Basically, they were examples of less than brilliant science, but somewhat forgivable given the technology and the data available at the time.

However, with pseudoscience, the intent from the outset is to suggest something special, a golden benefit, a wondrous remedy which is hidden and outside the remit of normal science.

A classic example of pseudoscience is the marketing of ionised water or alkaline water or alkaline ionised water and their related machinery which can cost over US$3,000 (RM13,000) each.

It doesnt matter how they call it the facts are that water (unless it is distilled) is ALWAYS ionised and alkalinity is (unnecessarily) introduced via hydroxides catalysed from mineral salts in the water or introduced by the machines themselves via packets of salt.

I have written about these machines before the only perceivable advantage is that people would drink more water and hydrate themselves better after spending so much money on them.

But there is no scientifically verifiable data that these simple, cheap, easily-produced, overpriced contraptions and their alkaline waters have any health benefits.

One particularly odious branch of pseudoscience targets desperate people who have, or fear, cancers or other major illnesses there are so many of these alternative treatments that they are investigative items for science researchers dedicated to debunking them.

However, as a little example, we can briefly dissect a surprising and very recent one shared by friends on social media. You may have come across pills or treatments involving vitamin B17 for curing and preventing cancers.

The name itself is problematic for there is no such thing as vitamin B17, at least, not in medical nomenclature. Laetrile is the commercial name for vitamin B17 and is a synthetic form of a natural compound called amygdalin which is found in the raw seeds of some nuts and fruits.

Amygdalin is a glycoside (a compound which has a sugar attached via a glycosidic bond), had been discovered by French scientists in 1830 and had been trialled as a cancer treatment in 1892 in Germany it was found to be too toxic and discarded.

You may have come across pills or treatments involving vitamin B17 for curing and preventing cancers; there is no such thing as vitamin B17, at least, not in medical nomenclature.

The reasons for the toxicity was not discovered until later it was due to the action of a family of enzymes called glucosidases on amygdalin, resulting in two further compounds called gentiobiose and mandelonitrile.

The problem compound is mandelonitrile when it is further hydrolysed by the body into benzaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide it was well-known that hydrogen cyanide in relatively small doses simply kills mammalian cells, including both cancerous and normal cells, resulting in poor health and eventually death.

As an aside, the words amygdala is Latin for almonds and mandel is German for almonds and bitter almonds contain significant quantities of amygdalin. However, dont worry bitter almonds are never sold in the shops simply because they are too poisonous. It is plausible that some plants evolved amygdalin as a deterrent against mammals eating their seeds.

Regardless of the actual chemical reactions in the body to laetrile and amygdalin, it is a cheap compound to produce and deceitful or misguided people (who may not really understand any science) are still peddling the stuff today as a remedy for cancer.

The story of laetrile is interesting for this compound is probably the foundation stone of modern alternative treatments. It precipitated the eventual formation of the American Committee for Freedom of Choice in Medicine (CFCM) in 1972 an organisation dedicated to promoting and marketing questionable cures for cancers and other serious diseases under the guise of freedom of choice.

The convoluted tale of how laetrile became a cancer treatment started long ago in 1902. Based on observations of placenta tissues through a microscope, Scottish embryologist John Beard developed the idea that cancer cells and cells developed during pregnancy called trophoblasts are one and the same thing.

He further suggested that trophoblasts were destroyed by an enzyme called chymotrypsin secreted by the pancreas and if not enough chymotrypsin was produced to kill off and manage trophoblasts, cancers would form and grow.

In 1945, Doctor Ernst Theodore Krebs, Jr. founded the John Beard Memorial Foundation to develop and apply Beards ideas. When the initial experiments did not work out well, Krebs decided that a compound developed by his father, laetrile, was more effective than chymotrypsin.

He then patented laetrile, and to boost his claims for the compound, unilaterally announced laetrile as vitamin B17, claiming that a deficiency in this vitamin is the cause of cancer.

You can still read these same claims restated daily on the internet. You should also know that Krebs had failed medical school and also flunked science courses in other colleges his doctor of science degree was from a defunct bible college in Oklahoma which had no science department. And in a final piece of irony, the word krebs in German actually means cancer.

Regardless, some doctors at the time saw laetrile as a way to becoming instant cancer treatment experts there was poor medical regulation during that period in the United States.

One such doctor was Dr John Richardson, a GP with no specialist training and a nondescript reputation. However, his practice suddenly took off when he became a cancer specialist offering laetrile treatment his declared personal income went from US$10K in 1971 to US$173K in 1973, eventually reaching several million dollars by 1976 when he finally lost his medical licence.

By the 1970s, the role of amygdalin and laetrile in the creation of hydrogen cyanide in the body was known, eventually resulting in the arrest of Dr Richardson for his illegal treatments (though he was not convicted due to legal technicalities).

By then, there were more casuistic people involved in the cancer cure business and after the arrest of Dr Richardson, they founded the Committee for Freedom of Choice in Cancer Therapy, later becoming the CFCM they had realised a lot of money can be made from desperate, terminally-ill patients and wanted to give very sick people the choice of how they can spend their money.

It appears that several similar shady confederations have existed ever since then, promoting untested and unreliable products in waves of media self-marketing this happens mostly on the internet these days.

As a footnote, in 1980 the US National Cancer Institute undertook a second trial using laetrile this time it was a full clinical trial and out of over 170 patients, not one was cured or even stabilised long-term. Those that did not die during the trial had increased tumours, as also observed in patients without any treatment.

Laetrile is now banned in both the United States and the European Union as a cancer treatment. A 1981 paper published in an oncology journal reviewed the history and pharmacology of laetrile and concluded that it is the slickest, most sophisticated, and certainly the most remunerative cancer quack promotion in medical history.

An often quoted fallacy is that doctors and pharmaceutical companies dont accept simple cures for diseases like cancer because they wont make big money from it, especially if the treatments involved cheap natural compounds.

If that is the case, then poorer countries would be using these cheap treatments and the cancer survival rates there would be significantly better than developed Western countries.

However, where data is available, the notable trend is a higher incidence of deaths for the same cancers in the poorer countries. Also the exigencies of life in poorer countries should have forced the doctors there to use the best low-cost alternative treatments and statistics would then be readily available for how they worked on patients however, it seems that even doctors in poor countries prefer to stay away from such alternative treatments and a plausible reason may be that these treatments have been tried and simply do not work.

This is not to say that the most expensive, newest treatments are automatically the best there is always a degree of cost-recovery (by the pharmaceutical company) and experimentation with any new medication, so for the people who need treatment for complicated conditions, there is sometimes a (difficult) decision to make, hopefully based on the best advice from competent medical professionals.

Also it is admitted that some pharmaceutical companies intentionally overcharge outrageously a classic case is Turing Pharmaceuticals over the drug Daraprim. Regrettably, there is not much that can be done apart from naming and shaming these excessively greedy corporate practices.

At the same time, the alternative treatment industry not long ago charged a British girl US$77,000 (RM340,000) for cancer treatments that involved intravenous transfusions of solutions of baking soda into her bloodstream each intravenous drip costed her US$550 (RM2,450) for a cooking compound that is sold for pennies. And sadly, she died as well, after several expensive trips to the US for treatment.

The circumstances leading to her death is the subject which will be investigated further in the next part for it has a lot to do with food and practically nothing to do with good science, despite being the basis of the diets of millions of people.

Gastric Bypass Leads to Long-Term Benefits – Weight Loss Surgery Channel

Patients who underwent gastric bypass surgery had improved overall health even seven years post-op, a recent study showed, indicating the long-term benefits of bariatric surgery.

The study consisted of 182 patients initially, mostly women in their mid-40s, who underwent gastric bypass surgery. This procedure bypasses a large portion of the stomach and the small intestine to create a small stomach pouch that restricts calorie intake.

Researchers followed subjects for seven years, at which time they had solid data for 78 participants.

For most of them, they came back to normal, Dr. John Morton, director of bariatric surgery and surgical quality at Stanford University School of Medicine, told HealthDay. There were roughly about a dozen measurements altogether, and there were substantial improvements across the board.

The results proved the long term benefits of weight loss surgery. The average weight loss was 81 pounds, cholesterol levels dropped from 184 to 174, and triglycerides dipped from 151 to 87. In addition, the patients also showed a significant drop in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. This protein is closely associated with a higher risk of heart attacks or strokes.

A previous study published in January of this year showed that gastric bypass surgery lowers the risk of a first time heart attack or stroke, as well as dying due to a heart attack.

The new study was presented last month at the annual meeting for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) in San Diego. Until published in a peer-reviewed journal, the results for this study ought to be viewed as preliminary, researchers noted.

Even so, the latest findings are important, because the study tracks the effects of weight loss surgery over several years, Dr. Robin Blackstone, ASMBS president, told HealthDay. Changes in the bodys metabolism and related workings of the heart after losing excessweight can significantly reduce health risks, she said.

Woman who gorged on 11000 a DAY sheds 17st you won’t believe what she looks like now – Daily Star

WEIGHT LOSS transformations dont get much more extreme than this.

CATERS

An obese mum who used to eat 11,000 calories of fast food a day has undergone a dramatic transformation.

At her heaviest Tiffaney Anderson tipped the scales at 29st 7lbs, following a traumatic childhood that led her to overeat,

The 26-year-old, from Utah, USA, used to spend 6,500 a year on her junk food addiction and one month she received a $1,600 (1,281) credit card bill for just her takeaways.

CATERS

Tiffaney said: "I would constantly eat fast food every day no matter what, my diet was so high in calories that I was gaining weight very easily.

"While travelling to work, I would order four egg, cheese and sausage McGriddles and a large chocolate chip frappe.

"Then 20 minutes later I would be back at McDonalds, for a second time, ordering the exact same thing before going into work.

Take a look at these exceptional body transformations.

1 / 30

Elora Harre, 23 has lost eight stone

Her weight quickly spiralled out of control, but after suffering a stoke Tiffaney realised she had to turn her life around.

"But due to my size, I had a mini-stroke while pregnant with my son, which was a reminder that if I didn't do something I would die, she said.

The mum-of-two has now lost a staggering 17st, bringing her down to a healthy 12st 7lbs.

Before her weight loss, Tiffaney reached a body mass index (BMI) of 54.5 - putting her in the highest level of obesity, according to the World Health Organisation.

She suffered a long list of medical issues due to her obesity, including a severely high blood pressure and heart problems.

In a desperate bid to change her life, she opted for a gastric bypass, but stresses it isnt an easy option.

I had a mini-stroke while pregnant with my son

"For me surgery was my only option, but it wasn't an easy journey like everyone believes, it was just as hard and now thankfully I've lost weight, she said.

But her extreme weight loss left her with rolls of unsightly excess skin and she's trying to raise $15,000 (12,000) with a GoFundMe page to have it removed.

Tiffaney said: "The skin looks nasty, it pulls over my abdomen and back.

"It hangs down and is disgusting, I feel like it makes me look like the 400lb girl still.

"I am blessed to have lost this weight, but I want to feel beautiful.

Tiffaneys struggle with her weight started after she suffered emotional and physical abuse growing up.

"I had a really rough childhood, I graduated high school and college homeless because I had to escape from my home, she said. "Growing up I lived in a nightmare."

To make matters worse she was viscously bullied at school over her weight.

"I was made fun of in high school, called 'beached whale' and 'fat cow'," she said. "I would walk on the bus and people would 'moo' at me.

It hurt a lot and only led me to eating even more, it was a horrible, vicious cycle."

Tiffaney's life radically changed after having a gastric sleeve operation and then a mini-gastric bypass last year - and shes relying on the kindness of strangers to help her complete her transformation.

Eat fat and lose weight? – Hernando Sun

Along with the New Year come the resolutions to get healthy and lose weight. If youre like me, you have tried every diet imaginable. You probably think you have heard it all. Well, there may be something you might not have heard of. Did you know that fat can be good for you? The Ketogenic Diet is a low carb, low sugar, moderate protein, and high fat diet that turns your body into a fat burning machine. Most of us consume a lot of sugar and carbs which our keeps our bodies in a constant state of glycosis which basically means our bodies are burning off sugar, not fat. When you drastically cut your intake of carbohydrates and sugars, your body eventually enters a state of ketosis, in which it is getting its energy from the ketones causing fat to burn quickly. This is beneficial not only for weight loss, but other aspects of your health as well.

Some research suggests that a ketogenic diet can help lower your risk of heart disease. Studies have also shown that it may alleviate some symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, and ALS. This is thought to be because abnormal glucose levels can cause damage to neurons and ketones are believed to protect them. The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York was the first to demonstrate that ketosis actually slowed down the progression of ALS in mice.

So how can you achieve ketosis?

The diet has a strict guide for the 3 main categories of food: 75% fats, 20% protein, and 5% carbohydrates. Good sources of fat are from avocadoes, nuts (especially almonds, cashews, and macadamia nuts), coconut and olive oils, butter, pumpkin seeds, whole eggs, full fat cheese, chicken thighs and legs, beef (make sure its not lean), pork rinds, sour cream, cream cheese, bacon, and fatty fish. Vegetables that are typical of a ketogenic diet include spinach, broccoli, asparagus and mushrooms. Theres actually a wide variety of foods that you can have, this is by no means an all-inclusive list. The internet is thriving with delicious recipes waiting for you to try. You can test your bodys ketone level with test strips available at most pharmacies to make sure you are in the optimal range.

One warning: Dont get discouraged by The Keto flu. As your body is detoxing and switching gears to get healthy, you may feel sluggish and moody, almost flu-like. Like an addict kicking a bad habit, your body is craving the carbs and sugars its used to. Many people give up at this point, but if you persevere through it, you will see amazing results!

Remember to get your physicians advice before beginning a new diet.

Mediterranean diet could lead to lower child obesity rates | WWLP.com – wwlp.com

(CNN) The so-called Mediterranean diet has gained lots of followers because of its perceived health benefits; but what about having your children making the switch to its regimen of natural foods?

The Mediterranean diet is heavy in vegetables, fruit, unrefined grains, and other foods that are good for you. Its been linked to a host of benefits, including longer life, and better bone and heart health.

There are many positive aspects of this style of eating for adults. Nutrition experts say the Mediterranean diet is good for kids too, with some caveats.

The diet calls for skim or low-fat dairy products; pediatricians call for little ones to consume whole milk until age two.Nuts are also included in the diet, something doctors say could be a choking hazard for children under age four.

The Mediterranean diet calls for a moderate amount of wine, which is illegal to consume until age 21 in the United States. Apart from that, signs are emerging that the Mediterranean could be beneficial for children.

A study presented to the European congress on obesity in 2014, found that children who followed it were 15 percent less likely to be obese.Other studies have suggested the diet could lower rates of asthma and wheezing in children.

Ask the Anytime Gal: What is the best diet to stave off heart disease … – Jacksonville Daily Progress

Question: With it being American Heart Month, Im curious what dietary changes I should make in order to stave off heart disease? Just trying to be proactive rather than reactive!

Answer: First of all, kudos for focusing on prevention! As far as diet is concerned, there are definitely some modifications you can make, but to be honest, they arent all that new. For starters, you could try following the DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. This diet focuses on specific amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean proteins. I follow a Whole-Food Plant-Based diet for disease prevention. The WFPB way of eating has even reversed heart disease in numerous studies. It focuses on whole grains, legumes (beans, lentils, and peas), vegetables, fruits, dark leafy greens, daily multivitamin, vitamin B12 supplement, and ground flaxseed. Sounds pretty healthy, right? In fact, the diet has been shown to reduce hypertension, and can also decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke over time. But even if you dont follow a comprehensive diet, you should still try to limit your sodium intake, reduce your intake of saturated and trans fats, moderate your alcohol consumption (no more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women), and increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. All of these changes will go a long way in helping to protect your heart, and the rest of your cardiovascular system. If you want additional information, check out the American Heart Association website, http://www.americanheart.org, or consult with a registered dietitian.

Newall: The pony of Port Richmond goes on a diet – Philly.com

The construction workers arrived at Kazs Tire Center in Port Richmond in need of some Goodyears and an answer to a burning question: Wheres the pony?

Advertisment

of

Coco. The pony of Port Richmond. The delight of East Somerset Street. The chestnut gelding rescued from an abusive fairground who lived behind the tire shop and grew fat and happy from 15 years of love and attention lavished by Kaz Nabavi and his wife, Sedighah.

Too fat, unfortunately.

Kaz and the construction workers sat in the wood-paneled waiting room he keeps decorated with a shrine to his hero, John Wayne.

He would tell them the whole story. He always does.

The horse, said Kaz, solemnly, had to go on a diet.

I first met Kaz a few years ago on a whim. I heard a pony was living behind a tire shop. I met Coco. More importantly, I met Kaz, who is 72 and about as close to a living embodiment of joy as a human being can be.

An Iranian immigrant, he left his homeland in the early 1960s, fleeing the brutality of the shah. He loves his life in America. He loves Sedighah and their two children a doctor and a lawyer. He loves The Duke, and Teddy Roosevelt cowboys, he said. He loves working the polls on Election Day, with his carefully selected slate of candidates, both Republicans and Democrats. He loves the tire shop and the animals he keeps on his land behind it. His Chilean chickens that lay green eggs. His gorgeous peacock and dearly departed rescue goat. The parrot that liked to ride on Cocos back.

Sometimes, Kaz and I discuss politics. And sometimes when all the ugliness makes even Kazs smile fade, well talk about his pony. Kaz always returns to his pony.

Sitting under a portrait of the Duke, Kaz regaled his guests.

One afternoon in late summer, the story goes, Sedighah hurried into the shop. Coco had fallen. Or at least, lay down very fast. She wasnt sure. Kaz went to Coco. There was no just denying it anymore. The horse was too fat.

For months, he had been telling his wife as much.

One lap of hay in the morning, hed remind her. One lap of hay in the evening.

The horse doesnt like that, his wife would say, leaving Coco a feast of a whole bale.

At the market, for every piece of fruit his wife bought Kaz, shed buy two for Coco.

Watermelons and cantaloupes. Apples and carrots. Bananas even.

This is not a monkey, Kaz would say. This is a horse.

And exotic fruits that Kaz had never tasted, let alone name.

Who is the boss of this house? Kaz said. Is it the horse or me?

He tried spreading the hay out so Coco would walk for it.

The horse doesnt like that, Sedighah would say

Then there were the endless snacks from the neighborhoods kids who ignored Kazs sign: Please, do not feed the animal (Horse). Thank you.

Once, Kaz would ride Coco from Port Richmond to Penn's Landing, stopping along the way to give kids rides. Sedigah would ride him, too, with the parrot on the back.

But now, Coco was growing old and round enough that Kaz could no longer fit his legs around him.

He called a doctor.

Give him less food, otherwise hes going to die, the doctor said, prescribing a year of exercise.

Sedighah wasnt impressed.

The doctor doesnt know what hes talking about, she said. The horse likes to eat, give him food.

Kaz thought of a friend who owns a farm, near a lake, with a cozy barn and roomy paddock. Coco could get the exercise he needed.

We put it to pasture, Kaz said. Its the best thing. Of course, I miss him."

Kaz has visited Coco twice. He doesnt look like hes lost any weight. But they take good care of him. And that makes Kaz happy.

But without a pony things werent the same on East Somerset. Sedighah was sad. So was Kaz. And all the kids missed him, said Danny Beck, a roofer across the street, who liked to feed him apples despite the sign.

You got rid of my Coco, one little girl told Kaz, who tried to make her smile. I said, I didnt get rid of him. You did. You fed him too much food.'

Kaz knew what had to be done.

On Thursday, once the snow ended, Kaz put on his jacket and began to clean Cocos old stall. He wants it to be nice when he brings home the brown and white painted pony he bought for himself and Sedighah and East Somerset Street.

Beautiful, he called him. Hell bring him home when the weather breaks. He showed me a picture. It looked a little fat.

So here it is: Don’t diet on the days leading up to a date. Drinking, dieting and dating is a terrible idea. – Elite Daily

Greetings, sweet kittens. It's me, Zara, your digital big sister.

While I love the weekend as much as the next free-wheeling, high heel-wearing, winged liner-sporting, booze-swilling, red-lipsticked PARTY GIRL, 99.9 percent of the mistakes I've made in my life have taken place during the weekend. I've spent one too many Mondays spiraling down the dark vortex of weekend guilt, regret and shame.

But hey, don't fret. Because I'm going to be here every Friday to stop you from the awful weekend fuckups that are screwing up your life. Here's this week's Very Important PSA.

Lets not waste time. This weekend PSA is so painfully real and happens all too often, so I feel VERY strongly about it.

So here it is: Dont diet on the days leading up to a date. Drinking, dieting and dating is a terrible idea.

Look, if youre one of those amazing girl creatures who has an authentically ~positive relationship~ with her body and would never THINK to diet before a date or skipa meal because she wanted to feel prettier and who has never tugged at her flesh in the mirror repeating, I hate myself. I hate myself. I hate myself, then please feel free to click out of this article. It will probably irritate you.

For the record, Im very happy girls like you exist. But Im not a girl like you, even though Ive spent thousands of dollars in therapy and yoga to emulate your wellness. I guess Im just damaged goods or something.

However, I know Im not alone. I happen to know a lot of girls who do (or have done) this kind of destructive shit, too. And it always ends in a total, epic, shame-spiraling disaster.

Now, kittens, the time has come to close your eyes. Its (horror) story time.

A million years ago (OK, maybe like five), I was going to go on a date with a girl I was super excited about. I had been lusting after her from afar for years. When I was still closeted, I had sex dreams about her.

But finally, I was an out-and-proud lez, and eventually, I told a friend, who told a friend, who told her, that I was, uh, interested.

And apparently, she was down for a date!

My little gay boy compatriotMax* came rushing up to me during Drag Queen Bingo one night.

She says youre her type! he gasped.

My heart fluttered. Really?

Yes. Shes going to text you.

I felt sick with excitement. Thats cool, I said, puffing on casually on my ciggie. (Never let them see you sweat, girls.)

Two nights later, Lana* sent me a text. Hey, Zara. Its Lana. Do you want to grab a drink after work Tuesday?

Bile roseup in my throat. I quickly called my best friend Ruba and screamed, WHAT THE HELL DO I TEXT HER BACK? I WANT TO SEEM CASUAL, BUT ALSO INTO IT BUT CASUAL BUT INTO IT.

Ruba and I agonized over thisuntil we finally crafted the perfectly calculated, seemingly effortless text to send to Lana.

This is sort of like beach waves isnt it? I said to Ruba as Isent the message.

What do you mean beach waves?

Like, when you style your hair into beach-y waves. You spend two hours trying to make it look like you just stepped off a beach on a windy day. So, you spend twice as long trying to make your hair look effortless and messy than you do when you try to make it look styled and sleek.

Oh yeah, Ruba agreed. Beach waves.

Anyway, Tuesday night the night of my date with Lana was only four days away. That was nothing!

So I did what I always do when Im nervous: I went to take a good look at myself in my bathroom mirror and engaged in what my shrinks call negative self-talk.

Youre so hideous. Look at your skin; its full of zits. Massive, open pores. How are you going to clear your goddamn skin up in time for this date? my negative self said to me.

I cant, I whimpered back.

Well, you know what you can do?

What?

You might not be able to clear up your skin by Tuesday, but you can TOTALLYlose weight by Tuesday. Youre looking a little thick.

I pinched the flesh on my upper arm. I am?

Yes. Its OK, though. Just be really strict for the next few days, so you can look good for this date with Lana.

Oh, God. Youre right. Ill only eat fruits and vegetables for the next four days! And Ill go running, too. I promised.

Maybe even throw in some hot yoga? That will get rid of your water weight.

Good idea. I nodded at my negative self in the mirror.

Look, I dont have the best track record when it comes to self-control, but when Im determined to do something, I do it full force, babe.

So for the next four days, I practically starved myself. At work, I would watch my co-workers gorge on pizza and donuts, my mouth watering as I sadly ate my lonely carrot sticks.

Finally, Tuesday came around. I slipped on my deliciously slutty, Courtney Love-looking slip dress, fishnet stockings, patent leather Doc Martin boots and stared at my reflection. I ran my hands across my stomach I had definitely lost some weight.

Well done. My destructive negative-self was pleased.

I looked at my phone. It was 9:00 pm, and I was set to meet Lana at 11:00 pm.

Confession: Im one of those idiots who completely loses her personality when shes attracted to someone.

Im a sassy, talkative bitch most of the time. But when I find you physically beautiful, I completely shut down. I forget words. Im not exciting. I do weird things, like let out horrible tinkles of hysterical laughter at things that arent even remotely funny.

But sometimes, I believed alcohol wouldhelp.

Ill just have a personality drink! I thought to myself as I poured a giant glass of white wine before my date.

And having no food to hold the wine, I felt tipsy off half a glass. I giggled to myself as I slid into a taxi to meet Lana downtown.

The next morning, I woke up with my heart pounding outside of my chest and a head full of steel nails. I struggled to open up my eyes, asthey felt like they were sealed shut.

Literally, my lashes were stuck together from gobs of sticky mascara, I had to peel them open with my fingers.

OH GOD! I shrieked.

I had a hazy memory of Lana texting me that she was going to be a little late and another hazy memory of ordering a glass of wine and stumbling into the bathroom to apply lipstick.

Then, I had a traumatic, ugly, vile flashback: I remembered beingso wasted, I was holding on to Lanas jean pockets. Then, my memories went right to black.

Yup, thats right. I had a total blackout on my dream date. I couldnt remember a damn thing.

After hours and hours of beating myself up, I finally mustered up the courage to call Lana.

Im so sorry was all I could say.

Yeah, its OK. I just hope youre OK. You were really bombed.

I know. Im sorry. I didnt eat a lot that day. This doesnt usually happen, I lied. I had blacked out from not eating more times than I could ever count. It always ended horribly.

But this was the worst. I had totally blown it with someone I had liked because I had over-dieted and drank too much booze. My radical methods of achieving perfection had backfired once again.

That sleepless night, I really thought about my life. It seemed I was always doing things like this trying too hard to be thin, trying too hard to be liked and trying too hard to be pretty.

In turn, I was destroying myself and scaring away the healthy things I so desperately wanted.

And Lana was a healthy person. Thats why I liked her. Thats why I wanted to look good for her and impress her to begin with.

But healthy people arent drawn to unstable peoplewho starve themselves and black out on first dates.

Some people are drawn to that, like the people I had been attracting before. But those people were toxic energy vampires whogot off on rescuing helpless shits like me.

Two days later, I called Lana again. Look, Im so sorry. That was a huge wake-up call. Can I please have a do over?

Lana hesitantly agreed. And this time, I didnt listen to my negative-self talk. This time, I told her to shut the fuck up because her advice wasnt helping it was hurting me.

So, I ate a solid meal before our date and only had one drink over the course of five hours.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and considerupgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

Yes, I was awkward because Im an awkward person when Im sober, and yes, I felt bloated because I always feel bloated when I eat. But I was aware of everything that was going on.

I didnt realize that not only was booze putting a hazy filter over my feelings, but starvation was, too. When youre hungry, you have a desperation about you. And you cant tell what youre ravenous for another person or a cheeseburger.

And just so you know, Lana and I ended up dating for, like, two years.Though,we wouldnt have ever had a relationship had she not been so kind.

But I dont want you to put yourself in that position.

So eat, girl. Not only do you need to eat so you wont make a fool of yourself on the date, but you also need to eat to be safe.

My blackout that night with Lana was so bad, whoknows what couldve (or DID) happen to me? In fact, I think a lot of terrifying things have happened to me in my life as a result of not eating and drinking too much and then blacking out.

Sometimes, I get weird nightmares of hands grabbing at me and strange flashes of being pulled into cars, and I dont know if theyre a figment of my imagination or if theyre traumatic memories my subconscious is still tortured by.

But Ill never know, which is the most terrifying part.

And all of this is a result of me DIETING (or shall I say starving myself) so I could be prettier.

Really, Im not even pretty when Im dieting. You cant be pretty when youre not giving your body what it needs. And when youre not giving your body what it needs, your body doesnt give your brain what it needs.

And our brain is really the most beautiful part of ourselves. Our thoughts, our feelings, our perspectives on the world they all come from our brains.

Dont screw with your brain. Its too stunning to starve away.

So if youre getting ready for your date tonight, and you skipped dinner in an attempt to feel pretty, I want you to imagine me standing in your doorway.

Im holding up a gorgeous, silver platter from somewhere really bougie, like Tiffanys. On it is a gorgeous plate full of beautifully grilled vegetables, wild rice and sweet potatoes. Its healthy, but its hearty, like us, baby!

Eat this before you go out, honey, I say to you.

You take the plate from steady hands. You notice how happy and healthy I look. Ive been eating fucking MEALS! I say to you, reading your mind.

You eat the meal, and you feel fabulous. You feel ready for your date.

You took care of yourself, and when you take care of yourself, you radiate a really different, attractive energy. Its not needy. Its not desperate. Its balanced, self-aware and independent, and those are all qualities that draw in positive things and people.

And if you feel like you still wantto skip the meal, message me. Your internet lesbian big sister wont let you go on that date without eating. Promise.
