Chan School of Public Health states, "Obesity causes or is closely linked with a large number of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea, gallstones, kidney stones, infertility, and as many as 11 types of cancers, including leukemia, breast, and colon cancer. No less real are the social and emotional effects of obesity, including discrimination, lower wages, lower quality of life and a likely susceptibility to depression. a condition that affects." Eat This, Not That Health spoke with Dr. Tomi Mitchell, a Board-Certified Family Physician with Holistic Wellness Strategies who shares what to know about obesity and when to get help. Dr. Mitchell says, "Weight has become a controversial topic in recent years, with some people wanting to talk about it openly and others feeling triggered or flat-out refusing to address it. Regardless of where you lie in the debate, weight is still an important subject. After all, our weight impacts our physical health in various ways. It can affect our energy levels, ability to move and exercise, and mood. As such, it's essential to be mindful of our weight and to make sure that we are at a healthy level. This doesn't mean that we need to be obsessed with our weight or constantly dieting; instead, it simply means being aware of how our weight affects our overall health and wellbeing."
Dr. Mitchell states, "Anyone who has stepped on a scale knows that weight is simply a number. But for many, that number can be a source of anxiety and shame. When it comes to medical weight, however, the numbers are much more than just a number on the scale. Doctors use a calculation called the body mass index, or BMI, to determine if someone is at a healthy weight. BMI considers height and weight and provides a more accurate picture of someone carrying too much body fat. For example, a BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. However, it's important to remember that BMI is just a tool and doesn't consider factors like muscle mass or bone density. As such, it shouldn't be used as the sole determinant of whether someone is medically overweight."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
Dr. Mitchell explains, "Being overweight comes with several health risks. One of the most common is type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough. This can lead to high blood sugar levels, damaging the gums, nerves, and blood vessels. Being overweight is also a significant risk factor for heart disease. Extra weight strains the heart and can lead to high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. Additionally, being overweight increases the likelihood of developing certain types of cancer, such as endometrial, breast, and colon cancer. Thankfully, many ways to reduce the health risks of being overweight include eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. By making lifestyle changes, it's possible to improve your health and reduce your risk of developing severe medical conditions. As any doctor will tell you, being overweight has many health risks. From heart disease and diabetes to joint pain and respiratory problems, carrying extra weight can seriously impact your health. Here's three signs that indicate you're overweight."
According to Dr. Mitchell, "If your clothes feel tighter than usual, it could signify that you have gained weight. Although many other factors can cause clothes to feel close (such as bloating or water retention), excess weight is often the most common culprit. When you gain weight, your body stores the extra calories as fat. This fat can build up anywhere on your body, including around your waist, hips, and thighs. As this fat increases, it can cause your clothing to feel tighter and less comfortable. If you suspect that you may be overweight, speak with your doctor. They can help assess your weight and guide you on how to lose any excess pounds. If you find yourself constantly pulling at your clothes or buying new clothes in larger sizes, it may be a sign that you are carrying too much weight."
Dr. Mitchell tells us, "Being overweight can take a toll on your body in many ways. One of the most common complaints from people who are overweight is fatigue. Carrying around extra weight can make it challenging to get enough restful sleep at night, and the added strain on your body can make it hard to feel energetic during the day. Even simple tasks like walking or climbing stairs can become more strenuous when carrying excess weight. If you are constantly tired, especially after physical activity, it could be a sign that you need to lose weight. In addition to fatigue, being overweight can lead to other health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and joint pain. If you are concerned about your weight, talk to your doctor about ways to lose weight safely and get back to feeling your best. Being overweight can lead to fatigue, as your body has to work harder to move around."
"When you are overweight, your heart has to work harder to pump blood throughout your body," Dr. Mitchell shares. "As a result, you may experience shortness of breath after exertion (such as going up a flight of stairs). This is because your heart cannot supply enough oxygen to your muscles. In addition, being overweight can also lead to sleep apnea, which can further reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches your muscles. So, for example, if you are struggling to breathe after even moderate exertion, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about your weight. They will be able to give you more information about how being overweight affects your health and what you can do to lose weight. If you find yourself panting after climbing a flight of stairs or going for a walk, it could signify that you are overweight and out of shape."
Dr. Mitchell says, "If you are overweight, you may be feeling frustrated and helpless. But there are many ways to get help and achieve your weight-loss goals. First, you can talk with your doctor. They can assess your situation and recommend a treatment plan that is right for you. Another great resource is a Registered Dietitian (RD). RDs are nutrition experts and can help you create a healthy eating plan that fits your lifestyle. They can also guide portion control and tips for making healthy food choices. Many online resources and support groups are also available, which can provide motivation and inspiration. There are also prescription medications for weight loss. Some people are skeptical, but in my clinical experience, they are often very effective, especially when coupled with a proper diet and exercise. So if you are struggling with your weight, know that you are not alonehelp is available. You can reach your goals and improve your health with the right resources."

If you frequently eat red meat and are looking for a leaner, lighter and higher protein-containing replacement, Dickson says his first recommendation would be white meat chicken. "If you're looking for a lean protein source, in my opinion, white meat chicken is a better choice than dark," he explains.
Despite the higher fat and cholesterol content of dark meats, they are "often the healthier option," he stresses. Ultimately, you can "reduce the amount of oil and fat in your food" by not frying it and by removing the skin, he notes.

In addition and in place of ground beef, Dickson says he thinks ground turkey is a "popular choice because of the meat's low fat and high protein content." It's versatile enough to be thrown into a "wide range of dishes, from soups and stews to tacos," Dickson continues. True, some cuts of turkey are healthier than others, but the "whole bird is healthy and lean," he advises.
Dickson concludes that you should "be wary of prepackaged lunch meats, as they frequently include excessive amounts of salt and other unhealthy additives." Noted!

To discover some of the worst options out there, we spoke to health experts Lisa Richards, nutritionist and creator of The Candida Diet, andKrutika Nanavati, Registered Nutritionist and Dietitian. They pointed out two in particular you should cut down on whenever possible: refined flour and cooking oils.

If you bake frequently, you likely go through a good amount of flour. However, Nanavati points out that you should be cautious of the refined variety because it can "sabotage your weight loss efforts." Yikes! This is mainly due to the fact that refined flour, like many processed ingredients, is "high in calories and has little nutritional value."
Additionally, another major risk of this ingredient is high blood sugar. Nanavati explains that "refined flour is higher on the glycemic index than whole wheat flour, meaning it raises your blood sugar levels more quickly. This can lead to increased hunger and cravings, and may contribute to weight gain," he warns. What's more, if you frequently indulge in foods made with refined flour, you're also putting yourself at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. "Instead, try using whole wheat flour or almond flour," Nanavati concludes.
Another common ingredient that could be wreaking havoc on your body and slowing your weight loss progress is none other than infamous cooking oils. "Oils are among the worst ingredients to cook with if you're wanting to lose weight," Richards tells us. "This is because they are very calorie-dense and provide little in the way of nutrients the body actually needs. Essentially, they are empty calories."
Of course, it's very difficult to cut all oil out of your diet for good, as some recipes can't do without them. However, Richards notes that they're not always necessary, especially in the high amounts many recipes call for. "For instance, when sauteing vegetables recipes will typically call for oil of some sort, about 2 tablespoons. This can be avoided by replacing oil for water or a low-calorie sauce like liquid aminos or balsamic vinegar," she says. Noted!
There's a similar story when it comes to cooking oil sprays, which she explains contain unnatural additives such as lecithin, "which acts as an emulsifier and dimethyl silicone which is an anti-foaming agent." One exception is avocado oil, which makes a great replacement to your typical cooking oil spray.
Switching up your diet and cooking habits surely isn't easy. However, if you want to see the fastest weight loss results possible, some sacrifices may be in order. That's why, whenever possible, choosing healthy alternatives to fattening ingredients like these is always your best bet.

Rachael Sacerdoti, founder of the wellness programme Its So Simple, shared the best nutrition tips to reverse the signs of menopausal weight gain and ease symptoms. She explained: The shift in hormones as we reach the menopausal age certainly attributes to our bodies becoming prone to storing extra weight. And there are many other symptoms, such as night sweats, anxiety, and hair loss that will all increase our stress and cortisol levels that play havoc with our bodily functions."
According to the expert, adjusting the nutrition should be the first step and it is a simple way to heal and restore.
A diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, and high-quality protein is key for supporting hormonal health, and the foods women have for breakfast every morning can make a huge difference.
Rachel explained: We believe that making healthy lifestyle changes at any age is vital, but it should be even more considered as we reach our menopausal years."
With the biggest hormonal change during menopause being a decline in oestrogen levels, it is essential to supplement the diet with substantial protein and naturally occurring phytoestrogens.

The expert commented: As oestrogen is directly related to helping with healthy fat metabolism, bone density and muscle mass, it is crucial we eat enough quality protein such as turkey, which has incredibly high protein levels."
Menopausal women may lose bone density, so an increase in vitamin D is also essential, and oily fish and whole eggs are the best sources for this.
Greek yoghurt also carries nutritional benefits for bone health due to its calcium, potassium and magnesium content so it is another great alternative to have for breakfast every morning.
Therefore, a menopause-friendly breakfast should include foods such as turkey, for quality protein, eggs and salmon for vitamin D, and Greek yoghurt for calcium, which are all foods women should be having every morning.

Angela Counsel, a nutritionist and menopause expert, recommended the best foods to lose weight which also helped her lose four stone while going through menopause.
She explained: "Increase your vegetable intake, iodine foods (seaweed and sea vegetables), and reduce gluten and grain foods.
"Consume phyto-oestrogen foods soya beans, sesame seeds, flaxseeds.
"Eat right for your body type, take a personalised approach to your diet and lifestyle, and reduce stress by eating and living well," she recommended.

Michael revealed pumpkins "are full of health benefits" as they are packed with potassium which "helps you to lower blood pressure, lower your risk of stroke and increase bone mineral density, boosting your bone health".
Pumpkins are high in fibre and low in calories, "which means they make you feel full without adding more food intake into the day".
They are also a nutrient-rich food, "a healthy way to fill up" and "their fibre promotes digestive health, too, helping you to go more regularly," the trainer revealed.
He also recommended having pumpkin seeds as they have tryptophan, "an amino acid that helps make a chemical called serotonin that helps you sleep".

Loni Love is setting the record straight on what body positivity means to her.
In an interview with Sherri Shepherd on theSherri Show, the comedian revealed that even though she considers herself body positive, she still cares about her weight and its implications on her health and her ability to cross her legs.
"Look at this, I can cross my legs nowI haven't crossed my legs since 1992 Sherri, so this right here is an effort," she said.
The Emmy-award winner has lost 40 pounds but says her journey is far from finished.
"It's still a ways to go and you know what? I want to be a role modelbecause as Black women we gotta watch the diabetes, we gotta watch our cholesterol, we gotta watch our heart. So, it's very, very important that we look at our numbers," she said. The former The Real host went on to explain that self-love does not make her immune from bodily changes.
"Body positivity is not about weight, it's about being able to live no matter what size you are, but you care about your weight. You care about your health. And that's what we're doing," she said.
This is not the first time Love has been transparent about her mindset shift regarding her health and weight. In a March interview with Yahoo Life, she explained that she has become more conscious about what she consumes as she gets older.
"My attitude towards body image has been more about being healthier," she said. "I think I took for granted that you could eat a cheeseburger, or go to Taco Bell. In my 50s, I'm taking my health a lot more seriously. As far as my body, I don't care about people who are judgmental about women and their body types. I accept people for who they are."

DEAR DR. ROACH: Im 72, and I have had arthritis for three years: two years in both knees, one year in my right hip and the base of my spine. I am 53 and weigh 221 pounds, with a body mass index (BMI) of 39. I lost 23 pounds from January to June.
What is the BMI needed for an orthopedic surgeon to do a hip replacement for someone with osteoarthritis -- without a broken hip? I recently had an assessment of my hip X-rays. I was told Im at the outer cutoff of a BMI of 39, so Im eligible for a hip replacement operation. Then, a few weeks later, I saw the surgeon, who rejected me -- claiming that 39 isnt the outer limit, 35 is.
After a long talk, the surgeon said hed do it for me, but Id get a better result if I lose 20 more pounds and get my BMI down to 35. I felt jerked around, but said Id wait and lose weight. Im also trying to find a surgeon I like more than him.
So, what is the BMI needed for knee surgery: 35 or 39? -- L.C.
ANSWER: There is no standard cutoff BMI for joint replacement surgery. It is true that people with a BMI over 40 are at higher risk for medical complications; however, it is also true that people with severe arthritis and a high BMI still get improvement in their quality of life with surgery. Denying a person a cost-effective surgery that can greatly improve their quality of life simply because of a BMI number (which, in itself, is a flawed metric) is inappropriate.
I can understand why you would want to see a different surgeon, as it sounds like you were not treated well. However, the surgeon was right that surgical outcomes are better if a person can lose at least 20 pounds, according to a 2019 study. This included shorter lengths of stay in the hospital and a lesser chance of needing surgical revision. I wonder, though, if part of the benefit seen in the study was due to increased exercise prior to surgery, which is known to be beneficial in surgical outcomes.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My 45-year-old son has hemochromatosis. The treatment is phlebotomy of a pint of blood, sometimes every two weeks, until the iron level is normalized. My understanding is that the blood is discarded. Is there anything wrong with the blood? If not, I would think blood banks would welcome the donation. What are your thoughts on this subject? -- E.B.
ANSWER: Hereditary hemochromatosis is caused by the body absorbing too much iron due to a genetic defect. With no way to get rid of iron, it builds up and damages many organs, especially the heart, bone marrow, joints and adrenal gland. As you say, the best treatment is to remove iron in the form of red blood cells. This is effective at preventing most of the organ damage, if started quickly enough.
There has never been anything wrong with the blood of people with hereditary hemochromatosis, and the FDA here in the U.S. has always allowed the blood to be donated. However, until recently, the American Red Cross has not accepted blood donations from people with hereditary hemochromatosis. I am pleased to say that they have just changed their policy and will now be using this precious resource to help others, so long as the person meets all the criteria for being a blood donor. The blood will undergo all the standard and rigorous testing prior to being pronounced safe for use.

David Harbours Weight Loss Transformation: How He Lost More Than 75 Pounds?

If you're a fan of Netflix's Stranger Things, you've probably noticed some major changes in the character of Jim Hopper played by David Harbour.
In one memorable scene where Harbour takes off his shirt to show off his lean, toned physique, he reveals the aftermath of his time spent locked up in a Soviet labor camp.
As Harbour told GQ, he worked intensely with his personal trainer David Higgins to go through eight months of training, including a rigorous exercise and diet plan to lose weight for the role.
So, how did he lose more than 75 pounds for the leaner version of Hopper seen in season 4? Heres what we learned from an Instagram live video Harbour did with Higgins.
Growing up as a nerdy kid who had never played sports before, David Harbour was never athletic for most of his life till he realized in his 40s that his body could not sustain a sedentary lifestyle.
Harbour told People Magazine that he was crossing the street one day when a car came into view. He attempted to sprint, but his body wouldn't let him. He realized that if he wasn't capable of running across the street, it was a part of growing old.
While preparing for the role of Hopper in season 4 of Stranger Things, David Harbour started working out.
He also began a healthy relationship with his body that made him feel good about himself and resulted in an increase in confidence. Harbour said he does an hour-long Pilates session five days a week.
He credited the exercises for fixing his injury and imbalances in his body, including his knee, toe ankle, hip, and back. Harbour started off with simple movements on a reformer machine.
When asked what his ab routine was to build his six-pack, Harbour laughed and said that his trainer made him do 200 ab crunches five times a week.
David Harbour told GQ that his major weight loss was due to intermittent fasting, a popular way that involves restricting when or how much you can eat in a given period.
Harbour said it was the fad diet of the moment but later found out that it did help him with his weight management. Research hasn't proven that intermittent fasting can lead to healthier habits, but there are studies that have shown no health risks associated with it.
The actor said that he wasn't making any drastic changes to the food he ate as much as he was changing how much he was eating, which made his lifestyle better.
Harbour told GQ that he had his meals within a six-to-eight-hour time frame during the day and fasted for 24 hours twice a week. He didn't change what he was eating; rather he limited his mealtimes to specific time frames.
After practicing intermittent fasting and cutting out sugar for a while, Harbour decided to eat more vegetables and make his diet cleaner by eating more vegetarian foods. He still follows intermittent fasting and mostly vegetarian eating even after his transformation for Stranger Things.
Even after completing his training for Stranger Things, David Harbour told People Magazine that he still keeps up a regular exercise routine. He likes to do weight training twice a week and runs at a low rate four or five times a week, keeping his pace at about 65 to 75% of his potential heart rate.
In an interview with GQ, Harbour told the magazine that he learned a lot from his experience on Stranger Things, especially the relationship with his body and what health means to him.

A good nights sleep can help you stay on track with your weight loss goals. Studies have shown that a lack of sleep can cause an increase in appetite and cause you to choose food that is high in calories and carbs. Make sure your bedroom is set up for sleep by turning off the television and other electronic devices when its time to turn in. It can also help to maintain a consistent bedtime (even on weekends).

Hitting happy hour a little too hard is one of the worst things you can do when youre trying to lose weight. Although you dont have to cut alcohol completely, women who drink heavily can find themselves at an increased risk for obesity. If youre going to drink, stick to five ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or a 1.5-ounce shot of distilled spirits a day. Drinking more alcohol can lower your inhibitions and cause you to make bad food choices. It can also interfere with your sleep schedule, which can impact your metabolism.

When youre thinking about your overall diet, you cant forget the impact of sodas and juices. Those empty calories and added sugar arent doing a thing to help you get to the weight you want. Opt for water instead, which can help you feel fuller and boost your metabolism.

Research has found that increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol can contribute to weight gain. High levels of stress can also lead to stress eating which can completely derail your diet. Whether its binge watching your favorite show, a manicure or a good laugh with a good friend, do your best to find ways to make self-care a priority.

Losing weight doesnt have to mean giving up dessert altogether. Its ok to allow yourself a sweet treat every now and then. Try a piece of dark chocolate or fruit with yogurt or whipped cream to satisfy your sweet tooth. In the long run, youll be less likely to binge on things that are unhealthy.

Deontay Wilder has revealed his decision to lose weight, stave off retirement and commit his future to trainer Malik Scott.
The Bronze Bomber is ready to battle Robert Helenius on October 15 in a WBC heavyweight title eliminator bout this weekend.
Wilder, on the back of two losses to Tyson Fury, must beat the big Finn to have another chance at being a champion.
The Tuscaloosa fighter, who has 41 knockouts from 42 wins, needs to have his hands raised for a first victory since smashing Luis Ortiz in November 2019.
After sparring with Helenius for the third installment with Fury that got voted Fight of the Year for 2021, Wilder knows the contender well but remains wary of a real contest situation.
Ive never faced Helenius when it counts, so who knows what hes going to bring, said Wilder.
Everyone knows that fighters train harder than ever when they face me. Hopefully, well be able to bring that excitement on October 15.
Asked what his partnership with ex-heavyweight Malik Scott means to him, Wilder responded: Me and Malik Scott clicked instantly when we met helping Tomasz Adamek prepare for a fight years ago.
To be able to make him one of my head coaches was a no-brainer. Having people you trust and know have your back means so much.
Whats understood doesnt need to be explained.
Wilder stated how camp went with Scott: I can only speak on what Ive been doing in training and sparring. I would say I look amazing.
I havent lost any steps. If anything, Ive improved and gone back to the fundamentals. Ive added new aspects to my skillset.
Its really about applying some things that I used not to work on as much.
Visibly losing weight judging by images of camp for Fury and Helenius, Wilder said hes getting back to how things were before the The Gypsy King trilogy.
My weight is not going to be what we worry about in this fight or fights in the future. We gained a lot of weight the last fight, but it was more about the expectations of seeing my body a certain way.
Now Im going back to what Im used to and whats comfortable for me.
Contemplating retirement for weeks before making a comeback on Oct 15, Wilder explained that receiving an honor from his hometown in Alabama urged him to extend his legacy.
Seeing the statue made for me in Alabama is what brought me back. My accomplishments are set in stone.
But being there and seeing the people supporting me made me feel like theres more that I can do.
Im still young. Ive got three more years left in this business. Theres still a lot more left for me to do.
I dont feel any pressure. Im soaking in my happiness and peace. This reign is about being happy.
I dont have anything to prove to anyone. Ive done an amazing job in my career. So now I want to do the things that make me happy.
Whatever we gain, thats a plus.
Wilder has many fights out there to keep him busy as part of a group containing the best heavyweights on the planet in Fury, Andy Ruiz Jr., and Oleksandr Usyk.
A fourth fight, a revenge mission with Fury, and a world title shot at Usyk are both on the cards after an expected Pay Per View battle with Ruiz next February in Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, facing Anthony Joshua remains unlikely as the Briton is continually kept away from the top punchers around the globe by promoter Eddie Hearn.
Fans on both sides of the Atlantic would undoubtedly like the fight. However, it seems off the menu as AJ looks to rebuild his failing career.
Dillian Whyte, an opponent Joshua has already knocked out, looks to be in the London mans future at some point.
Right now, all eyes are on the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The best puncher in the sport makes his eagerly-awaited return on PPV.
The last time Wilder campaigned at the famous New York venue, he blasted out Dominic Breazeale in the first round.
WBN was ringside to witness a hellacious demolition before going backstage to a press conference as Wilder held court in his pomp.
Three years older, it will be interesting to see how the defeats to Fury have affected his mentality against other opponents.
In the past, we were used to seeing The Bronze Bomber disregard boxing skills in favor of landing that single punch.
Against Fury the last time, Wilder was forced to box more to allow himself to hit the target. Will he do that against Helenius with another big right hand?
It remains to be seen. But judging by the size of the Scandinavian boxing star, the trilogy performance against Fury would be sufficient to get the job done.
Al Haymon of Premier Boxing Champions hopes things go to plan. He can then work on Wilder and Ruizs WBC title final eliminator next year.
Ruiz did his part by defeating Luis Ortiz last month. However, in his previous triumph, he couldnt knock Ortiz out, as Wilder did in November 2019 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
The one-punch ending was one of Wilders best KOs.
