Habits Secretly Increasing Your Prediabetes Risk, Say Physicians Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
According to the CDC, 37.3 million people in the U.S. have diabetes (11.3% of the population) and 96 million people aged 18 years or older have prediabetes (38.0% of the adult population).
"As recently as 50 years ago, type 2 diabetes was extremely rare. Now, around the world, the number of people with diabetes is increasing rapidly and is heading towards 643 million by 2030. This is a worldwide epidemic," says Adele Hite, PhD, MPH, RD. "In the past, type 2 diabetes was thought to be a progressive disease with no hope for reversal or remission. People were and sometimes still are taught to 'manage' type 2 diabetes, rather than to try to reverse the underlying process. But now people with type 2 diabetes can hope to regain their health." Here are five habits increasing your prediabetes risk. Read onand to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.
Lack of sleep is strongly linked to both diabetes and prediabetes, doctors warn. "How does poor sleep contribute to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic issues? It's known that lack of sleep raises the stress hormone cortisol and increases glucose production, which raises your blood sugar," says Tony Hampton, MD. "Studies have shown that markers of increased insulin resistance appear after just one night of partial sleep deprivation. Symptoms of prediabetes can arise with as little as five days of sleep disturbances. Blood pressure also increases with sleep deprivation."
Excessive belly fat is particularly dangerous in raising the risk of prediabetes, studies show. "Being overweight is known to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, but this study shows that not all fat is equal: where any excess fat is stored in the body has a big impact on disease risk," says Professor Mark McCarthy, University of Oxford.
If you're overweight or obese, even minor weight loss can help lower the risk of getting prediabetes, experts say. "If you have prediabetes, losing a small amount of weight if you're overweight and getting regular physical activity can lower your risk for developing type 2 diabetes," the CDC advises. "A small amount of weight loss means around 5% to 7% of your body weight, just 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person."
Regular exercise is important for lowering the risk of prediabetes. "Even if you don't lose weight, exercise will make you stronger and healthier," says endocrinologist Douglas Zlock, MD, medical director of the diabetes center at John Muir Health. "Healthy habits can definitely postpone the onset of diabetes even if they don't prevent it."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
There is evidence that stress can impact blood sugar control, helping raise the risk of prediabetes. "Most people with type 2 diabetes know the importance of exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and getting plenty of rest," says Dr. Joshua J. Joseph, endocrinologist at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. "But stress relief is a crucial and often forgotten component of diabetes management. Whether it's a yoga class, taking a walk or reading a book, finding ways to lower your stress level is important to everyone's overall health, especially for those with type 2 diabetes."

Jaheim Oatis praised by team for massive weight loss and effective play – Touchdown Alabama Magazine

When Jaheim Oatis originally committed to Alabama he weighed in at 416-pounds. His size was a reason why the Crimson Tide valued him as a four-star recruit, but it was clear that he would need to put in some work to get down to a more manageable weight if he was looking to contribute.
But just a few months following his December commitment to the program and Oatis accepted and excelled with the new challenge.
The Columbia, Miss., native kept fans updated with his weight loss journey throughout and recently revealed that hes down 74 pounds. His commitment to improving his body is something the staff has been very pleased to see during his brief time at Alabama with defensive coordinator Pete Golding raving about his progress.
To see his transformation over a four-year period, because Jaheim first came to camp here in eighth grade and he got an offer in eighth grade, Golding said on Sunday. Obviously, you could see spurts on tape throughout his high school career that he could be really special. And you could see a lot of plays where hes taking a play off. I was like, OK, well, thats gonna get us beat.
So the most exciting thing for me with Jaheim, hes always been a great kid, but when he accepted to come to Alabama, he knew what it was going to take. He knew it was going to be hard. He could have gone to a lot of other places where he wouldnt be asked to do what he would be asked to do here.
He knew weight was the biggest thing, was what we had to focus on, and that ended up being one of the biggest decisions to come was the nutrition with Miss Amy (Bragg), the strength and conditioning, to develop him and get him down to where he needed to be to play good, winning football. And hes done an unbelievable job of that. So Im excited about him.
The overall weight loss on Alabamas roster has been a positive for the entire staff as Nick Saban applauded the efforts of strength coach David Ballou and Alabamas director of performance nutrition Amy Bragg.
I am pleased with several of our guys, Saban said. Weve almost eliminated a lot of weight issues, which come from a scientific approach. Not me looking at a guy and saying he needs to lose 10 pounds but a muscle mass, body fat correlation that helps a guy be more efficient. And Im pleased with the way a lot of our big guys have sort of got that into balance.
I think Miss Amy does a really good job of helping guys. And again, it goes back to the kind of choices and decisions you make about what you eat, when you eat it, how much you eat of certain things that can create the kind of increase of muscle mass, decrease of body fat, that makes you a more efficient player. When I say efficient, Im not talking about your ability to do something once. Im talking about your ability to sustain it for 40-50 plays in a game at the same high level.
Those guys have done a good job. I think its contributing to them being better football players. And Im pretty pleased with the overall team improvements that weve made from that standpoint, as well as explosive movements and speed. I think Dave Ballou and his group have done a really good job of motivating the players to work hard in some of those areas, which hopefully will be helpful on the field.
Like Saban said the adjustment of his body weight has appeared to translate to success early on the field for Oatis who has added new aspects to his game. As Alabama looks for an interior pass rush, Oatis has shown to be capable of potentially contributing as he moves much better than his current weight would suggest.
Believe it or not, Jaheim has got a lot more wiggle than yall are gonna think hes got, Golding said. So hes a guy internally that if you one guy on him, good luck.
The Crimson Tides top defensive player Will Anderson has also been somebody impressed by Oatis performance at practice and willingness to change his body. While studying practice film, Anderson admitted during his media availability, that he gets distracted sometimes by what the big man does in the middle of the defense.
Im very excited about Jaheim, Anderson said on Monday. Hes great. He comes to work every day. Hes a hard worker and you know a lot of big guys, they would complain about being that big and having to lose that type of weight. But he came here, head down, worked hard, lost the weight. Hes moving good.
For a guy like that size to move like that, its crazy. Sometimes, I get distracted watching film, watching him take on blocks. Its like a steel wall like hes not moving.
Alabama still has 14 fall camp sessions and two scrimmages to go before game week preparation begins for Utah State. But Oatis commitment to losing weight along with his impressive play up front could potentially position him to be a breakthrough freshman for this Alabama defense.

Enjoy homemade soups this monsoon to boost immunity and lose weight – Hindustan Times
A hot bowl of soup in monsoon is the perfect way to warm you up on a rainy day and make you feel good about life. A perfect starter, a nutritious mid-meal snack, and a light dinner option, a bowl of soup is for every season and can be enjoyed at any time of the day to satiate your cravings and keep you full. Soups are also a storehouse of nutrients considering the many healthy ingredients we can add to them from fresh vegetables, proteins, to healthy carbs. Fitness enthusiasts with hectic routines can definitely trust this one-pot meal to lose weight in a healthy way. (Also read: Monsoon recipes: 5 delicious soups and beverages to have during rainy season)
All you have to do is buy the seasonal veggies, combine them with tofu or paneer, and sprinkle your choice of spices and herbs to add flavour and nutrition to your bowl.
"Soups are usually perceived boring but with a hint of creativity you can pack in nutrients and antioxidants specially in monsoon for your comfort soup bowl," says nutritionist Lovneet Batra in her recent Instagram post listing all the benefits of soups in monsoon season.
Here are reasons why homemade soups can help in monsoon:
Great way to add vegetables before your meal to avoid glucose spikes
In monsoon its advisable to avoid salads and uncooked veggies. Now soup is a great way to start your meal that packs in fibre and reduces glucose spikes. In fact, prepared with the right ingredients (vegetables + enough protein + some carbs), soup can be a truly healthy dish and be considered as a complete meal.
Keep you hydrated
During monsoon, its not uncommon to drink less than you need. But while you may not be hot and sweaty, you still lose fluid through daily activities. Since soups are mostly liquid, theyre a great way to stay hydrated and full.
Give your immune system a boost
Monsoon brings a host of infections and soups are a great antidote for times when you are sick. Freshly prepared vegetable soups with seasonings like ginger and black pepper stop certain white blood cells neutrophils from congregating and causing inflammation which in turn triggers the body to produce mucus. It also thins mucus effectively.
Can reduce hunger pangs
Soup may reduce hunger and increase fullness. This may be due the fibre present (through vegetables/beans). Fibre is known to increase feelings of fullness by delaying gastric emptying and increasing stomach leads to your stomach being fuller for longer, which translates to reduced hunger. It also increases insulin sensitivity.

How To Find The Most Useful Diet Regime To Aid Your Weight Loss Journey – VIVA GLAM MAGAZINE – vivaglammagazine.com
Its no secret that the amount of individuals who are overweight is increasing. And if youre one of them, you know how difficult it can be to discover a nutrition plan that works for you. Dont worry were here to assist! Well talk about various diets and how to choose which one is best for you in this blog article. So, if youre ready to lose weight, keep reading!
When youve discovered the ideal diet for you, the benefits are limitless. Youll have more energy, feel better overall, and maybe even see a reduction in medical issues that are weight-related. Furthermore, youll be able to fit into your clothes better and feel greater self-assured!
A carefully planned diet will also help improve your cholesterol levels and blood pressure. It can even ward off some types of cancer.
You might be asking yourself if theres a diet that you can make changes to so it better fits your lifestyle. The answer is yes! There are many registered dietitians and nutritionists who would be more than happy to help you create a plan that works for you. For instance, the experts from PhenClinics say that if you have gluten sensitivities, they can assist you in finding foods that are safe for you to consume. Similarly, if youre a vegetarian, they can help you find foods that are high in protein to ensure youre getting all the nutrients you need. When it comes to making a custom diet plan, the skys the limit! Here are some of the most common types of diets that people follow:
If youre looking to lose weight quickly, a low-carb diet might be right for you. These plans limit your carb intake and force your body to burn fat for energy. However, they can be difficult to stick to long-term, and some people experience side effects like fatigue and headaches. This is, however, one of the more popular dieting methodologies.
This type of diet is exactly what it sounds like youll consume fewer fats than you normally would. The thinking behind this is that by reducing your fat intake, youll automatically start losing weight. Although, its important to make sure youre still getting the nutrients you need, and some people find low-fat diets difficult to stick to. So you can pair this diet with another one of the options well mention below.
With this approach, youll consume fewer calories than you normally would. This can be effective in the short-term, but its not sustainable long term. Namely, the way it works is by making you feel constantly hungry which can obviously be tough to stick to! Also, its important to make sure youre still getting all the nutrients your body needs when youre on a calorie-restrictive diet. This means that this diet is often paired with another one, like a low-fat or low-carb diet.
Now that you know a little bit more about dieting, its time to figure out which one is right for you. This process will be different for everyone, but there are a few things you can keep in mind as you search for the perfect nutrition plan.
The first step is to decide how much weight you want to lose. This will assist you in narrowing down your choices and coming up with a diet that is doable for you. If you have a lot of pounds to shed, a low-carb diet might be more suitable. The thinking behind this is that youll be able to lose weight quickly, which can be motivating. On the other hand, if you only have a few pounds to lose, a low-fat diet might be a better option for you.
In a lot of cases, its better to lose weight gradually, so youre more likely to stick with your diet and not get discouraged. Also, in this way, your weight will not bounce as much, which can be frustrating. This is why a lot of people choose calorie restriction, as it allows you to lose weight gradually while still making sure youre getting all the nutrients your body needs.
Its also important to consider your lifestyle when choosing a diet. If you have a busy schedule, you might not have the time to cook elaborate meals. In this case, a meal delivery service or pre-packaged meals might be more your style. On the other hand, if you enjoy cooking, you might prefer a diet that gives you more freedom in the kitchen. This is where low-carb and low-fat diets come in they tend to be less time-consuming than other options.
For example, the keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that can be very effective for weight loss. However, it requires you to cook most of your meals from scratch. If youre short on time, this might not be the best option for you.
Finally, youll need to consider your financial situation when selecting a diet. If youre on a tight budget, you might want to look for one that doesnt require pricey ingredients or meals. Alternatively, if youre prepared to pay a bit more, you could be interested in a premium diet program that includes extra services like coaching or meal delivery.
Also, your insurance might cover the cost of certain diet programs its definitely worth checking to see if this is an option for you. One last thing to keep in mind is that some diets require special equipment, like a juicer or blender. If you dont have this type of gear, it might not be the right diet for you.
To conclude, there is no one-size-fits-all diet. The best approach is to find one that fits your individual needs and lifestyle. With so many different options available, theres sure to be a diet out there thats perfect for you. Just remember to do your research and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new nutrition plan. Good luck!

Shiver Yourself Thin: Cold Exposure A Possible Solution To Lose Weight Without Dieting – Medical Daily
Obesity is an American epidemic. More than 40 percent of Americans are obese. This is not an ideal situation since obesity is a harbinger of coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and some types of cancer. Now, Harvard scientists have found a possible solution to break down that extra body fat.
In a study published in the journal Nature Metabolism, diet-induced obese mice models were able to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance while resolving obesity-induced inflammation when they were subjected to cold temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Extensive evidence indicates that obesity and metabolic syndrome are linked with chronic inflammation that leads to systemic insulin resistance, so interrupting inflammation in obesity could offer promising therapies for obesity-related disease, said co-author Yu-Hua Tseng, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
During the study, the mice were fed a standard high-fat western diet which led to obesity development in them. These mice models were compared to control group animals which were maintained at a thermoneutral zone- the temperature at which the body does not need to generate heat to maintain its core temperature.
The researchers from Brigham and the Joslin Diabetes Center found that the mechanism was dependent on brown adipose tissue or good fat. When exposed to cold temperatures, these fattissues released a naturally occurring molecule called Maresin 2.
We discovered that cold exposure reduced inflammation and improved metabolism in obesity, mediated at least in part by the activation of brown adipose tissue. These findings suggest a previously unrecognized function of brown adipose tissue in promoting the resolution of inflammation in obesity, Tseng added.
Maresin 2 was found to play a pivotal role in the experiment.
We found that brown fat produces Maresin 2, which resolves inflammation systemically and in the liver, said co-author Matthew Spite, Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. These findings suggest a previously unrecognized function of brown adipose tissue in promoting the resolution of inflammation in obesity via the production of this important lipid mediator.
The results suggest that Maresin 2 could be used in clinical therapy for patients with obesity, metabolic disease, or other diseases linked to chronic inflammation. Unfortunately, the lipid mediator breaks down quickly in the body. Tseng and colleagues wish to find a more stable chemical analog of Maresin 2 for clinical use.

2 Salad Ingredients Experts Say You Should Avoid If You Want To Lose Weight – SheFinds
This article has been updated since its initial 03/06/22 publish date to include more expert insight.
A salad is widely considered to be the epitome of a healthy meal, and one that is frequently recommended in any well-balanced diet.If you still find yourself experiencing weight gain, heartburn, stomach aches or other negative effects tied to indigestion, its worth looking into what you consume every day and what might be a major culprit.
If youre trying to lose weight, youve probably been advised to eat salads or similar veggie-heavy bowls, so we checked in with registered nutritionists for advice on how to make them optimal for weight loss, and what common ingredients might cause it. Read on for tasty salad ingredient ideas and healthy eating and weight loss tips from Jay Cowin, NNCP, RNT, RNC, CHN, CSNA, registered nutritionist and Director of Formulations at ASYSTEM, as well as Lisa Richards, registered nutritionist and creator of The Candida Diet.
The 100+ Best Beauty Launches Of 2022

Thick, creamy and heavily sugared salad dressings are often linked to heartburn and bloating, and essentially defeat the purpose of a salad which is intended to be a go-to healthy meal. Creamy salad dressings, especially commercially made ones, Cowin notes, can worsen indigestion because they're high in acid and are usually full of fat, sugars, and other additives. This slows down the digestion process or makes it difficult to break down food properly resulting in the extra production of stomach acid, Cowin says. Additionally, the acid regulators in salad dressings can irritate the stomach and also cause heartburn.
Regarding weight loss, creating a filling and satisfying salad is a great way to ensure you're actually full after eating, which can prevent overeating or binging at other points in the day, Richards says. She adds that a filling salad doesn't have to have lots of unhealthy ingredients to get the fullness you're wanting to accomplish. She explains that satiety is based largely on activating the stretch receptors and nutrient receptors in our stomachs.
Shutterstock
Rather than adding fried chicken or other proteins to your salad, Richards suggests opting for grilled versions. "Grilled or smoked chicken provides lean protein without the excess calories and fat from frying and breading," she explains. "Steak can be a decent protein," she says, but you'll want a leaner cut of beef.
Fried onions and croutons are two toppings that quickly add "empty calories, carbs and fat" to any otherwise healthy salad, she warns. Instead, she says to "look for salads that are packed with nutrient-dense toppings like black beans, avocado, tomato, cucumber, low fat cheese, corn, peppers, and other fruits and vegetables." Romaine lettuce or a mixed green blend is preferred over iceberg lettuce, she adds, as the "nutrient content is greater."
Shutterstock
Its definitely difficult to adjust to a major dietary change and stop eating your favorite foods when trying to lose weight, but as these experts note, if your favorite salad ingredients are contributing to indigestion or weight gain, you are much better off without them. If you can't skip the dressing when eating a salad, then the helpful alternative is to make one on your own, Cowin advises. This is so you know exactly what goes in and you can avoid any ingredients that will aggravate your GERD or acid reflux. He suggests adding a bit of extra virgin olive oil, since it is a good ingredient to use as dressing since it has a low acidity level.
By adding a variety of nutrient-rich vegetables, nuts, and even some whole grains, Richards says, we can ensure we are full, satisfied, and well-nourished. She continues; Some of my favorite salad toppings include asparagus, cucumbers, walnuts, artichoke, olives, quinoa, corn, and almond slices. These are just a few to choose from and can be added in a variety of combinations!

Michael Mosley: ‘Eat properly’ and still lose weight with diet method that burns fat fast – Express
Dr Michael Mosley has been hailed for his weight loss techniques for years, having created the 5:2 programme, which sees people eat healthily for five days a week and then only eating 800 calories on the two remaining days. It's a method that's been found to be "more effective" for shedding weight, but he warns people it does come with some rules.
Speaking while doing an appearance on Studio 10 in 2019, Dr Mosley discussed why this diet method is better than other slower techniques.
"The scientists have been telling me for some time now that you can be better off doing rapid weight loss diet and that is doing 800 calories a day," he said.
He referenced two big UK studies that examined this with groups of more than 300 people.
One group was allocated a rapid weight loss diet and the other on a normal slower paced one.

Dr Mosley went on to claim it has been "undoubtedly" proven to work but noted: "You have to eat properly.
"The problem with some of the diet which were done in the past is that they were kind of crazy," he added of fad, quick-fix diets, such as the cabbage diet.
"What you need to do is have a balanced diet, enough nutrients, enough protein in particular," he said.

"Now we say 800 calories and a lot of people say it's a lot more tolerable.
"We found people reported it was a lot more doable and they got less grumpy."
He explained that the new 5:2 intermittent fasting method still helps people consume fewer calories during the eight-hour window they're allowed to eat.
"It seemed to be low enough to trigger desirable metabolic changes like burning the fat, but high enough to stop them getting grumpy."
