When trying to lose weight, ban the word diet, suggests Albertson. Dieting can be unpleasant and make you hungry, so you constantly think about food, which is exactly what you dont want when trying to lose weight. Instead, she recommends thinking of weight loss as a part of getting healthier and concentrating on taking care of your body first.

Weight loss is complicated and you dont have total control over the number on the scale, but you do have control over what you eat, how much you move and other factors that impact weight, such as stress and sleep, says Albertson. She suggests setting SMARTspecific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-sensitivegoals and rewarding yourself when you hit them.

Instead of saying, I need to lose 25 pounds, and overwhelming yourself with what seems like an impossible goal, look toward the health benefits that can come from even modest weight loss.

Set smaller, achievable targets, suggests Bennett. Losing only 5% to 10% of your total body weight (TBW) can greatly improve your health and lower your risk for illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals what you eat is most important for weight loss. The pounds will come off more quickly if you improve the quality of the foods you ingest.

One of the healthiest ways to shed weight is to reduce your intake of sugar and rapidly metabolized carbohydrates, says Bennett. In particular, you want to cut out or drastically curtail your intake of high-glycemic-load foods, such as sugary snacks, processed carbs and soft drinks. When you avoid or cut back on French fries, chips, crackers and the like, youll speed up your weight loss.

Research shows a plant-based diet not only promotes weight loss, but is also easier to stick to than a low-calorie diet. Plus, its nutrient dense and has numerous health benefits.

Albertson suggests aiming to consume five daily servings of produce to start and working up to seven to nine servings a day. Start your day with a green smoothie, have a salad or cut up vegetables with your lunch and eat fruit for snacks and desserts, she says. For supper, have more stir frys, incorporate veggies into your pasta dishes and stir them into soups.

Increasing your protein consumption can help reduce appetite and help prevent the loss of muscle mass.

Breakfast skippers, listen up. If youre trying to lose weight, skimping on morning fuel is not the way to go. In fact, studies consistently show skipping breakfast is associated with overweight and obesity.

Additionally, a study in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found people who dont eat breakfast tend to have poorer quality diets overall, and they skimp on nutrients, such as vitamin D, calcium and iron.

Or try to stand more than you sit. Studies show that simply replacing sitting with standing leads to a greater daily energy expenditure, which directly translates into more calories burned and ultimately pounds shed.

For example, if you weigh 160 pounds and alternate sitting and standing, you can burn approximately 35 additional calories an houran extra 280 calories a day, 1,400 calories a week and about 70,000 calories a year.

Set a timer on your phone, Fitbit or computer to remind you to get up and move around every hour, says Albertson. Youll burn more calories and may lower your blood sugar and risk of heart disease.

Muscle burns more calories than fat. So how do you build more muscle? Strength training.

Adding resistance training to your weight loss plan is a smart idea not only because of the calories youll burn while working out, but also because of the afterburn effect.

Known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, EPOC reflects how long oxygen uptake remains elevated after exercise in order to help muscles recover. This elevation boosts metabolism both during and after strength training sessions.

And the more muscle you add to your frame, the higher your resting metabolic rate (RMR). Your RMR determines how many calories your body needs to function at rest. The greater your RMR, the more you can eat and not gain weight.

While cardiovascular exercise is often emphasized, strength training is key for dropping pounds and maintaining weight loss, especially after age 50 because muscle masswhich burns caloriesdeclines at a rate of 1% to 2% per year, says Albertson. Strength training can slow down muscle mass decline.

Cutting calories too drastically or working out 24/7 may actually backfire when it comes to weight loss. Most people think shedding pounds requires draconian measures to get results, but allowing yourself adequate recovery time is more productive.

Many people, when they get frustrated that they havent lost weight, will double down on the stressor (i.e. catabolic phase) that they are doing, says certified personal trainer Rob Darnbrough, CEO and co-founder of The Smart Fit Method in California. For example, theyll run extra miles, double up on the amount of time they spend at the gym and/or eat less food. However, all of the results we desire from doing the above things actually occur during the anabolic recovery phase.

During the anabolic phase, the body builds muscle mass and loses fat mass while recovering from the stressor, explains Darnbrough. So, instead of pushing yourself to a breaking point, which ends up leading to overtraining and diminished results, put as much energy into rest and nutrition as you do into workouts. To create sustainable results, try to balance your ratio of stress to recovery, says Darnbrough.

Sometimes losing weight can feel lonely, but you dont have to do it all by yourself.

Research shows being accountable works. In one study, two-thirds of participants who joined a weight loss program with friends maintained their weight loss for six months after the meetings ended, compared to just a quarter of those who attended on their own. Of course, many organizations also suggest having a sponsor or champion on your path to weight loss.

One of the best ways to consistently eat better and shed weight steadily is to check in every day with an accountability partner, suggests Bennett. Your accountability partner doesnt need to be your bestie, favorite co-worker or partner. Just find someone with similar weight loss goals. You dont need to talk every day, either. Just text each other to share that youre eating healthy foods and staying on track. If youre tempted by junk foods, you can lean on your partner, too. Thats when you may want to call them.

Couch surfers wanting to lose weight should turn off the TVin fact, the more television people watch, the more weight they gain.

One study that collected data from more than 50,000 middle-aged women over six years found that for every two hours the participants spent watching television each day, they had a 23% higher risk of obesity and a 14% higher risk of developing diabetes.

Excess television watching is correlated with extra pounds primarily because its a sedentary activity that often also leads to mindless eating. So, turn it off or maybe change the channel to an exercise program instead.

Speaking of mindless eating, you can reprogram your brain for weight loss by tuning back into your bodys natural Im hungry and Im full cues.

Add the fact that portion sizes have grown significantlyas much as 60% for things like snack foods and the result is consistent overeating.

Instead, try to eat when youre hungry and stop when you are satisfied rather than stuffed, says Albertson. Instead of tracking your food, try tracking how hungry you are before, during and after meals to get back in touch with these signals.

Getting a good nights sleep is one of the best things you can do to maintain a healthy weight and overall health. Studies show that poor sleep is associated with weight gain and other health disorders. When researchers analyzed 16 years worth of data on 68,183 middle-aged American women, they found those who slept no more than five hours per night were 15% more likely to have obesity compared to those who slept seven hours a night.

Insufficient sleep may also affect the production of appetite-regulating hormones ghrelin and leptin, which can lead people to feel hungrier throughout the day. Additionally, poor sleep increases cortisol and can result in harder-to-lose body and belly fat.

Most of us cant control what time we have to get up, but we can control when we go to bed, so counting back seven to nine hours from the time you have to wake up is a great tip, says Darnbrough. I also encourage the 3-2-1 rule, which means stop working three hours before bed, stop eating two hours before bed and stop digital stimuli one hour before bed to improve your deep sleep and REM.

Remember the acronym HALT, which stands for hungry, angry/anxious, lonely and tired. If you are physiologically hungry, eat. If you are experiencing difficult emotions, ask, What do I need? and give yourself what you truly need. If youre not hungry, it isnt food.

Begin the movement by holding the weights above your hips. From there, engage in single-leg hip thrusts by lifting the weight of your body with just one leg at a time. At the same time, keep your other leg up and off the ground. After you complete 20 hip thrusts with each leg, bring both legs to the floor, and remain in the hip thrust position for 30 seconds. "This will target your glutes like crazy," James says.

When it comes to weighted single-leg raises, James says they target the gluteus minimus, which is a smaller muscle in your backside area that sits right below the gluteus medius muscle. By toning both muscles, you should see progress in your saddlebag area.

To perform the exercise, James explains, "Hold a small weight on the side of your leg. [Then,] raise your leg to the side in a controlled motion." Keep that going until you complete your reps. Aim for 15 reps per leg.

Keep your small set of weights around for this exercise which will give your quads a good workout. At the same time, weighted squats will target your glutes and help you burn saddlebag fatespecially since this version includes a twist.

Begin the movement with the weights close to your body. Perform a normal squat. The twist comes in between squats, which is when you'll want to "pause to cross one leg behind the other," James says. Aim to do 10 reps.

And as well as being fun, taking part in a a "high energy" combat or dance session can burn between 500-700 calories per hour, according to the expert.

But these dance and combat based workouts don't have to be incredibly intense if you don't want them to be, and can be made "accessible" to all fitness levels.

"It's about going at your pace, and that's why these workouts are good, because they offer modifications."

Factors such as intensity and tempo can be changed depending on the individual, for those who want an extra challenge can add some hand weights to their exercises.

So what are the benefits of dance and combat workouts for women going through menopause?

Aside from melting away up to 700 calories per session, Faye listed some "key" benefits as improving your cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and memory.

"It's also a good endurance workout."

And at a time where women can experience a rollercoaster of emotions, another benefit is that these exercises are sure to "release those feel good hormones, endorphins".

"You know you'll leave feeling good after your workout."

Combat classes in particular are a great "stress-buster", which is particularly beneficial as cortisol (the stress hormone) can increase in perimenopausal women.

Some of the main moves Faye focuses on in combat classes include punch strikes such as jabs, cross, hooks and uppercuts.

It is fantastic for engaging the upper body and building muscle.

As for dance, Faye likes "hip moves that make you feel a bit sassy".

Dance also looks at footwork, be it jumps or heel digs.

"I would say a mixture of high impact moves and slow controlled moves using the hips.

"The higher impact modes will make you feel fierce."

Also known as cobalamin, vitamin B12 is a necessary vitaminthat aids in many essential body functions. Its a water-soluble vitamin thats absorbed in your stomach and then makes its way to your blood and cells.

While this vitamin isnt something that your body naturally produces, there are ways to fill the gaps. As B12 is naturally found in many animal products, its simple to incorporate this essential vitamin into your diet.

Vitamin B12 plays many important roles in your body, with many benefits, including:

One main benefit that vitamin B12 provides is producing red blood cells. Why is this important? Red blood cells deliver oxygen throughout your body, which turns into the energy needed to keep your body functioning in a healthy way.

When your body isnt getting enough vitamin B12, red blood cells become enlarged making it harder for them to move in your bloodstream. This can ultimately cause a type of anemia.

Vitamin B12 also helps your body make DNA the building blocks for all of your bodys cells.

Especially as we age, vitamin B12 is vital for brain health. Some studies suggest that the vitamin may even help with preventing cognitive decline. If you become vitamin B12 deficient, it can affect your memory and cognition.

Vitamin B12 is found in many food sources. But if you dont produce enough of a protein called intrinsic factor that helps your body absorb vitamin B12, or if you dont eat enough vitamin B12 foods, you may develop a deficiency.

If left untreated, vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, nerve damage and more, warns Taylor.

You may not realize it, but vitamin B12 can be found in some of your favorite foods. Theres no reason to completely change your diet in order to get a healthy dose of vitamin B12, says Taylor.

Here are some foods that are a good source of vitamin B12:

Dairy and (some) nondairy brands are fortified with vitamin B12. If youre allergic or intolerant to dairy and drink milk alternatives like almond, soy, oat or cashew milk, be sure to check the nutrition label for vitamin B12.

If youre vegan or vegetarian, some cereals are a great source of vitamin B12. Just be sure to choose a cereal that is low in added sugar and high in fiber and whole grains, notes Taylor.

Egg yolks contain more vitamin B12 than egg whites, says Taylor. Its important to eat the whole egg if you are trying to increase your vitamin B12 intake. But if you have high cholesterol, consult with your doctor or dietitian first.

Fun fact: Eating full-fat plain yogurt has been shown to improve vitamin B12 deficiency because the vitamin is more easily absorbed in dairy products. If youre looking for fewer calories, fat-free Greek yogurt is a healthier option that also provides a solid amount of vitamin B12 (it even has more vitamin B12 than whole-fat yogurt).

Many people who try to eat healthier include salmon in their diets. It has a ton of omega-3 fatty acids and protein, as well as B vitamins. Just half of a cooked salmon fillet (6 ounces) contains more than 200% of the daily value for vitamin B12.

Whether youre a fan of canned or cooked tuna, both provide many essential nutrients, including vitamin B12. If canned is your preference, opt for light tuna in water. If you prefer cooking your own tuna fillet, make note that the muscles right below the skin (the dark muscles) contain a high concentration of vitamin B12.

Eating 3 ounces of red meat one to two times per week is recommended. As a rule of thumb, choose leaner meats, which contain higher vitamin levels, says Taylor. And always try to grill meat instead of frying it.

Organ meats are incredibly rich in B12, but also contain a large amount of cholesterol. For this reason, Taylor advises people who include organ meat in their diet to do so in moderation.

A lean source of protein, iron and antioxidants, a 3.5-ounce serving of baby clams provides greater than 4,000% of vitamin B12s recommended daily value.

Unless you have a B12 deficiency or have identified a risk factor for deficiency (like following a vegan diet or having a malabsorption issue), theres no need to take a vitamin B12 supplement. Instead, include food sources of vitamin B12 in your diet, says Taylor.

If youre taking vitamin B12 supplements in addition to the vitamin-rich foods youre consuming, you could experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and headache. Symptoms of excessive intake are rare since your body will excrete any extra through your urine, adds Taylor.

The best thing to do? Consult with your doctor about a possible vitamin B12 deficiency. A simple blood panel will confirm your vitamin B12 levels and then your doctor can develop a plan of action from there.
