The first option in getting into and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is incorporating a good diet and exercise routine into your daily living.
In some cases, weight loss surgery becomes an option or necessity for those who need to turn that healthy corner to not just stay healthy but alive.
There is a roadmap of sorts to follow to try and exhaust all options before surgery is an option in trying to turn the corner and thrive in healthy living.
"The problem with having the extra weight or being in the overweight/obese category is that it comes along with having a higher likelihood of developing medical conditions -- like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heartdisease, arthritis, lung problems -- so the goal with healthy eating and exercise and weight loss surgery is to help people lose the weight, get down to a healthier weight category and therefore reduce the chances of developing some of those medical conditions,"Dr. Dena G Arumugam, M.D., Bariatric Surgeon, General Surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center with Hackensack Meridian Health, tells Townsquare Media News.
On the dietary front, Dr. Arumugam encourages you to incorporate less processed foods into your day and week, meaning foods that have less sugar or any kind of added or processed sugars, and then cutting out things like soda and sugary juices.
Food-wise, high-lien proteins are your best bet so that means including some fish, eggs, chicken, turkey, and low-fat beef, and also, Dr. Arumugam recommends cutting out a lot of the carbs and starches as well.
"Those are good places to start for healthy eating," Dr. Arumugam said. "Increase the amount of vegetables you eat, fruits are good too but they have sugars in them but natural sugars are obviously better than processed sugars."
Much like lifting weights or other fitness goals, you're not going to lose excess weight or see dramatic results overnight -- unless you're Tim Allen's character in Santa Claus 2.
Be patient and trust the process.
"I would say, start out small, make small changes that are easy for you to achieve. If you drink a lot of soda, cut out the soda or if you drink a lot of juice, cut out the juice, if you don't exercise at all, then start with small amounts of exercise -- that means 10-minutes a day. I tell all my patients, that everyone has 10-minutes a day, an hour a day going to the gym is hard, but if you can put in 10-minutes a day -- some fast walking or some weight lifting or something like that -- in your house, then do it, because you're going to find that the 10-minutes, after a few weeks, is too easy for you and you want to do more, it's the same with dieting, make the small changes with the ultimate goal that there are just big lifestyle changes," Dr. Arumugam said. "Healthy weight loss happens over time, those are not things that are going to happen overnight, those are not healthy weight loss plans."

If or when surgery does become an option for you, there are a few things to consider before making that decision.
"As far as surgery goes, we encourage our patients to try to lose weight prior to surgery, they don't necessarily have to, that's why they're there, that's why they're trying to get surgery because it's hard for them to lose weight," Dr. Arumugam said.
Once you commit to this option of having weight loss surgery, it's important to note, that there is a process involved here as well.
"The process takes anywhere from 2-6 months or so, depending on insurance, and during that process -- we talk to the patients about the potential for changing some of those lifestyle habits to lose some weight prior to surgery, we have them get evaluated with a nutritionist as well which helps with that process, and then we put them through a thorough medical workup," Dr. Arumugam said. "We want to make sure that their heart is healthy enough, their lungs are healthy enough and any other pertinent medical conditions will not interfere with the safety of the surgery."
That's the pre-operation process, then comes the operation itself.
"As far as the different types of surgery go, all surgeries are done laparoscopically now, so we do them with little tiny incisions which makes the recovery a lot faster, easier, there's less pain, less chance of infections, and usually just a one night stay at the hospital," Dr. Arumugam said. "There are three main types of surgery we do for weight loss: the gastric banding, the sleeve gastrectomy, and the gastric bypass."
The sleeve gastrectomy involves, "cutting and stapling about 70-percent of the stomach, removing it from the body -- and by doing that, we're decreasing the amount of food that someone is able to eat in a given time because the stomach volume is smaller, you feel full very quickly, and it also decreases the hormone that tells your brain you're hungry, so you actually feel less hungry after surgery."
The gastric bypass involves, "changing the anatomy of the intestines, we actually re-route the intestines so that the way that your body digests and absorbs nutrients changes and that's where the weight loss comes into play."
While it has a track record of working well, the gastric bypass is not as popular now as the sleeve gastrectomy, and there's also a risk it could lead to other health problems down the line, as it has there is a risk, "for more potential complications for the rest of your life after the anatomy has changed on the inside."
There's also more to the risk vs. reward in getting any type of weight loss surgery as well.

In an exclusive interaction with TheHealthSite, Dr. Varsha Gorey, Senior Clinical Dietitian at Apollo hospitals, Navi Mumbai, explains the differences between calorie-restricted diet and time-restricted eating, as well as the efficacy and safety of popular weight loss diet trends. Excerpts:
Every 8 out of 10 individuals are in quest of result-oriented diets. Enormous data have proven that reducing the calories is key component in losing and maintaining weight. Most of the Indians have on an average calorie consumption of 2000 to 2500/day on week days. Mostly calories consumed are from carbohydrates and fats, with limited amount from proteins. Following a systematic diet plan ensures that you have a fixed proportion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Calorie-restricted diet aims to cut down overall calories of carbohydrate and fatty foods.
Over the last decade new diets trends have evolved that focused on time-restricted eating. Several studies have highlighted the importance of time-controlled diets such as Intermittent Fasting (IF). Typical IF is of 16:8, whereby fasting is for 16 hours, and mealtime (eating time) window period is of 8 hours. The first meal could be taken between mornings 9 and 12 noon. Subsequently, between 5 and 8 pm would be the second meal. Benefits of this diet includes weight loss, blood sugar control for prediabetes as well as diabetics.
This type of time-restricted diet may be difficult to follow for those who are habitual of food grazing (eating frequently as you see the food) and binge-eating (go on eating large portions of food), mostly junk food.
Also, one needs to be cautious while following time-restricted diets. It's recommended to do under the supervision of an expert. Eating intelligently with right knowledge is crucial to balance all essential nutrients and prevent nutrition deficiencies. Some possible side effects are constipation, headache, hypotension (low BP), and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Few studies have proven intermittent fasting to be effective in weight loss and tackling metabolic and hormonal health issues, such as PCOD, Type 2 Diabetes. However, women during lactation phase, teenagers find it practically difficult to follow if.
Research has shown conflicting results. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared the benefits of calorie restriction with or without time-restricted eating on people with obesity for 12 months. The researchers found the regimen of time-restricted eating not more beneficial with regard to reduction in body weight, body fat, or metabolic risk factors than daily calorie restriction.
According to Dr. Gorey, not enough studies have been done on large heterogenic population for understanding long term benefits of Intermittent Fasting.
She believes that synchronization of circadian rhythm (biological body clock), time restriction and calorie restriction can offer the best health benefits.

Post-COVID-19 rise in eating disorders tackled with new guidelines – Medical News Today
According to estimates from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), more than 700,000 people in the United Kingdom have an eating disorder (ED). Many people with EDs do not present to healthcare services, so NICE states that this is almost certainly an underestimate.
In the United States, Mental Health America reports that 20 million women and 10 million men will experience a clinically significant ED at some time in their life.
Worldwide, according to a wide-ranging review, 8.4% of women and 2.2% of men will have an ED during their lifetime.
Eating disorders include:
New analysis from the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) has highlighted an alarming rise in hospital admissions for eating disorders in the U.K., with an increase of 84% over the past 5 years.
The greatest rise was in girls and young women under the age of 18. Fewer boys and young men are hospitalized with eating disorders, but their numbers have more than doubled in 5 years.
Males represent 25% of individuals with anorexia nervosa, and they can be at a higher risk of dying, in part because they are often diagnosed later since many people assume males dont have eating disorders.

This rise in EDs and hospitalizations is not confined to the U.K. A review of studies between 2000 and 2018 found that, globally, the number of diagnoses had more than doubled in that period. And a study of 3.25 million people in the U.S. found a 100% increase in inpatient treatment for EDs between January 2018 and December 2020.
The RCPsych highlights the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to prevent hospitalizations. People with EDs often appear healthy with normal blood tests, so signs that an ED has become potentially life threatening are often missed in primary care and emergency settings.
To help healthcare professionals spot the signs that an ED is causing severe health problems, the RCPsych has published new Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders Guidelines (MEED).
Dr. Dasha Nicholls, a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, who chaired the development of the guidelines, said:
Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating dont discriminate and can affect people of any age and gender. They are mental health disorders, not a lifestyle choice, and we shouldnt underestimate how serious they are.
Although the guidelines are aimed at medical health professionals, they also contain useful advice for carers and patients.
There has been a shocking rise in hospital admissions for people with eating disorders, made worse by the devastating impact of the pandemic on the publics mental health.

As early as May 2020, the UN highlighted possible mental health impacts of the pandemic. Since then, many studies have shown how the pandemic has increased mental health issues. Dr. Tantillo explained the effect of COVID-19 on eating disorders to Medical News Today:
[People with EDs] do not do well with inconsistency, ambiguity, uncertainty, and unpredictability. So you can imagine the devastating impact COVID [has had] on folks with EDs. There has been increased onset of illness as well as relapses during the pandemic, even in patients who were doing pretty well before the pandemic.
Dr. Tantillo also commented that social isolation has created opportunities for young adults to connect with unhelpful social media sources, adding to the risk of EDs. She highlighted the sharp rise in the U.S.: The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) Helpline has experienced a 107% increase in contacts since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alongside these pressures has been the difficulty of accessing treatment during the pandemic, as Tom Quinn noted, The dramatic increase in hospitalization shows that people are not getting treatment quickly enough, with patients admitted to hospital having become too unwell to be treated in community care settings.
If we are to stop the eating disorders epidemic in its tracks, its vital that this guidance reaches healthcare professionals urgently and that government backs them with the necessary resources to implement them.

Clinicians and charities in the U.K. and U.S. have welcomed the new guidelines. Tom Quinn felt they would help with diagnosis: MEED provides broader guidance on assessment and management of all eating disorders which can lead to patients presenting as a medical emergency, he said.
Dr. Tantillo agreed: I applaud the development of the Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders Guidance. It is necessary and essential because there is still very little training regarding eating disorders received by primary care and behavioral health providers (during their initial training and once on the job).
She added, Front line staff at hospitals need this info to help bust many of the myths related to eating disorders.
