You may notice as you get older, the pounds pack on more easily. And that's caused by a few reasons, explains registered dietitian Jonathan Valdez, RDN, owner of Genki Nutrition and a spokesperson for the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
For starters, your muscle mass decreases. Around age 50, our muscle mass decreases by about 10%. The importance of muscle tissue is that it is metabolically active and has the ability to burn more calories than fat, he notes.
Next, your metabolism may slow. With each decade, our resting metabolic rate decreases by 2%, which affects the body's ability to burn many calories, he says.
Lastly, your body experiences hormone changes as you age. Testosterone and estrogen levels decline with age, causing the body to store fat, and making it more difficult to lose weight. According to Valdez, lower estrogen can cause women to store fat around the abdomen, which can cause insulin resistance and promote weight gain.For men, decreased testosterone leads to decreased muscle mass and a slower metabolism. This prevents men from burning calories and losing weight.

"Eating more soluble and insoluble fiber can keep you feeling satiated and prevent you from feeling hungry," says Valdez. "This can prevent you from consuming high calories and putting on unwanted pounds. Aim for at least 28 grams of fiber per day."

"Be clear on what your goals aredo you want to simply lose weight? Improve a specific quality of life factor? What are you looking for?" says Colleen Tewksbury, PhD, MPH, RDN, CSOWM, LDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that participants who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who didn't.
"A study showed that bumping up the protein intake increases satiety, decreased overall food intake, and preserves muscles," says Valdez. "Try aiming for 25-30 grams of protein at each meal. Depending on your workout intensity, you may need 1.2 grams to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of weight."

"Weight management is an entire field of care with specialists. Building a team of support is important to work towards long-term weight goals," says Tewksbury. "This can include working with your primary care provider, registered dietitians, behavioral health providers, and others."
Green tea has been studied for its weight loss benefits thanks to its antioxidant EGCG that targets fat cells, so make yourself a cup the next time you need a warm drink. One study published in the Canadian Pharmacists Journal found that people who drank green tea lost on average 0.2 to 3.5 kilograms more than those in the control group who didn't drink green tea over 12 weeks.
Eating breakfast, and a big one at that, may help you lose more weight. A 2020 study found that participants who ate a high-calorie breakfast (69% of their daily caloric intake) compared to those who ate a low-calorie breakfast (those who ate 11% of their daily caloric intake) burned nearly twice as many calories throughout the day.

Ive Always Struggled With My Weight. Losing It Didnt Mean Winning. – The New York Times
I remember standing in the shower, in sixth grade, feeling disgusted by my body grabbing a handful of my floppy belly and saying to myself, This is not who I really am. I was reciting, unconsciously, the cultural script. And so, at 12, I summoned my willpower and started jogging. By the end of middle school, I was fairly slim. By high school, I was a decent athlete. In retrospect, I think what really slimmed me down were hormones and growth spurts. But that achievement became a pillar of my teenage identity, a story I loved to tell about myself: I had been a fat kid, a kid living under a genetic curse but then, through the miracle of willpower and self-discipline, I overcame.
Or did I actually overcome? What diet stories tend to leave out is that, in the wake of restriction, people almost always gain the weight back. The story of a life is much longer than the story of a diet. Over the decades, my weight has fluctuated widely as I have pinged between poles of excess and restriction, appetite and control, abstinence and snacking. Or, as my grandfather might put it, flavor and nutrition.
I have an alter ego that my wife calls, with affectionate amazement, Fat Sam. She first met him on our honeymoon. We had been driving all day, rolling through the high desert near Santa Fe, watching huge thunderstorms flickering over black mesas, trying to get to where we were going and when we finally did, in the middle of the night, famished and exhausted, the only open restaurant was Dennys. And the only thing on my mind was merging, body and soul, with the first cheeseburger that passed by.
The moment my meal arrived, the universe seemed to crack in half, like an eggshell in the hands of a line cook and a brand-new character crawled out: Fat Sam. Fat Sam attacked the food in front of him with wild urgency. As I ate, my wife kept trying to say something, to start a conversation, but I would be in the middle of chewing, or near the end of chewing, or just at the beginning of chewing, and I would hold up one finger as if to say, Yes, hang on, just a second, I have an answer for you but then in the moment of swallowing, when my mouth was briefly clear, when I could have spoken, I would immediately shove the cheeseburger back into my mouth and take another bite. I was in a kind of trance. I was like a horn player doing circular breathing. At one point the waitress came over and said, How is everything? and with my mouth absolutely overflowing, sounding like a drunken man, moaning with almost sexual ecstasy, I shouted, Oh, its REALLY REALLY good! and everyone in the room realized at the same time that she had not even been talking to us but to the table behind us. Fat Sam didnt care. He just kept cramming the universe into his face.
The classic diet slogan that made such an impression on me as a chubby child Inside every fat person, there is a skinny person waiting to get out should, in my case, be reversed. No matter what my body happens to look like at any particular moment, Fat Sam lives inside me. I recognize now, in fact, that Fat Sam represents some of my best qualities: curiosity, cheerful appetite, a hunger for life, satisfaction in the moment. Fat Sams mission is to consume the world in giant gulps of joy. It doesnt even have to be food: It can be naps, or video games, or telling jokes at a party, or walking, or shooting free throws, or reading, or petting a dog. Whatever satisfies a need, whatever I am starving for. And in that transfer, in that passage from outside to inside, in that radical taking in, there is a validation of existence, a proof of being, that I refuse to reject. Fat Sam, in many ways, is precious and good. He is a funnel into which the universe pours, the pinch in the hourglass. He reminds me that all of life is, in a sense, appetite. Even restriction satisfies a hunger the hunger to restrict. When I chose to deny myself something, it is Fat Sam who is feeding, greedily, on that denial.
One of my favorite photos is a selfie I took 10 days after my father died. It holds a strange paradoxical energy: mourning and joy, comedy and sorrow, ending and continuing. I took it in the guest bathroom at my fathers house when, going through his old things, we discovered a treasure trove of vintage jogging shirts. My dad was an avid runner he moved to the jogging hotbed Eugene, Ore., during its golden age in the 1970s, when the local shoe company, Nike, was rising and the legend Steve Prefontaine was out running the streets with his famous mustache. The Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson declared the year 2020 as her Year of health on the social media platform Instagram. She even dropped her specific weight loss goals on the platform. We must say that Rebels weight loss journey is just commendable.

The actress did different kinds of workouts, one time she posted a video of a stair challenge workout. She wrote, @jonocastanoacero just put me and @hugh_sheridan through an epic Opera House stair challenge workout! We did 30 laps! Wilson followed a strict regime, and she worked out consistently. She would do squats using a medicine ball, battle ropes, and many other exercises. A few months later, another of her trainers, Gunnar Peterson told People magazine in October 2021, that Rebel got really serious about her workouts early on in the journey.
At that time, Gunnar told People, And when she went to do her last three projects, she was with me for a few months, and then shed be gone for a couple months, and I dont worry about her. She has locked in. Its the best.
He further added, Shes eating right. Shes recovering right. Shes managing her stress levels and shes staying up to date and shes staying up to speed with her training.

In an interaction with People, the 42-year-old spilled the beans on her high-protein diet and she also disclosed that she used to consume nearly 3,000 calories every day before.
The Hustle actress said, Before I was probably eating 3,000 calories most days, and because they were normally carbs, I would still be hungry. So, Ive really changed to eating a high-protein diet, which is challenging because I didnt used to eat a lot of meat. I eat fish, salmon, and chicken breast.
Rebel also credited the coronavirus pandemic for helping her slow down and change her bad habits with the good ones. She said, I definitely think with the slow down, it did help. I think I was emotional eating, and overeating at times, because I wasnt loving myself enough either. And it does come down to that self-worth and self-love.
But Wilson did not deprive herself of food. She further added, Im just trying to go for overall balance, overall healthy balance. I have this state of being, which is not my quote, but I go Nothing is forbidden. Well be like, Should we get In-N-Out burger? And Im like, Nothing is forbidden. I can go there, I just might eat half of what I used to eat before. You know? And Ill have a burger, and a few fries, and then you feel fine.
Wilson wrote, Thanks for all the love so far on my Year of Health journey when I was reaching for the candies last night after dinner I thought to myself hmmmmbetter not and had a bottle of water instead x 8kgs to go until I hit my goal hopefully I can do it by the end of the year x, in a post on Instagram.
