Work is ongoing to bring methane inhibitors to UK market – FeedNavigator.com
Novel feed additives can reduce CH4 production in the rumen, but many are not yet available or not yet proven on UK farms, according to a new publication from Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL).
Work is ongoing to bring dietary methane inhibitors to the UK market and to develop delivery mechanisms that are better suited to grazing systems and less dependent on concentrate feeding, noted CIEL. The challenge of adopting such inhibitors into mainly forage-based systems needs to be addressed urgently for the UK.
The organization commissioned an independent consortium of expert scientists from the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), Queens University Belfast, Scotlands Rural College (SRUC) and Rothamsted Research to deliver the report.
The resulting publication, Net Zero & Livestock: How farmers can reduce emissions, looks at key strategies that livestock farmers can adopt now to reduce their carbon footprint and drive down net emissions.
For each species, key mitigation approaches are described and their impact modelled.
The report follows on from Net Zero Carbon & UK Livestock, produced in 2020, which established benchmarks for a range of UK farming systems.
Efficiencies around feed, forage and nutrient management are particularly pertinent for UK livestock production, noted the latest review.
Increasing productivity per animal while reducing input costs, and maintaining overall productivity at the same level, is something that can be done now. Farmers can focus on aspects such as age at which females first breed and their productive lifespan; the number of offspring produced and their growth rate; and rate of milk or egg production.
With regard to pigs and poultry, the publication noted that while their impact on UK emissions is smaller than ruminants, their carbon footprint is greatly influenced by the source of feed ingredients.
The effect of land use change (or not) associated with the protein ingredients within pig and poultry diets had the most significant impact on the carbon footprint within the farm case studies. For example, the carbon footprint of the pig and broiler farms modelled increased by over 100% when the protein ingredients were associated with land use change, compared to when no land use change was considered. It is noted that home-grown ingredients will be of most benefit if sourced from non-land use change practices.
Soy from non-land use change practices grown in other countries should not be considered negatively, it stressed.
The ruminant sector, especially beef and dairy, represent the main contributors of GHG emissions from UK livestock production, with the report stressing the importance of new technologies such as rumen methane inhibitors and wide-scale adoption as being critical to reduce emissions further in those sectors.
Beyond the use of methane inhibitors, other nutritional approaches that might help the UK dairy and beef sectors to achieve net emissions include increasing starch and concentrate proportions in the diet, within recommended guidance levels, to reduce methane (CH4) production per unit of feed intake. Depending on baseline diet, management and animal factors, this strategy could increase milk output in dairy cattle and should increase liveweight gain in beef cattle, reads the report.
The authors maintain that wider environmental considerations associated with carbon footprint of feed components and farm nutrient balance must be considered, and not just the financial impact.
Genetic improvement could also help reduce emissions in the dairy and beef sectors if focused on component traits, such as productivity relative to cow size, feed efficiency, fertility, longevity, or health. Genetic information for growth and carcass traits should be used in both dairy beef and suckler beef systems, found the report. This should be part of farm decision making now, to deliver long-term emission reductions.
The report outlines emerging dietary methane inhibitors.
Nitrate, it noted, is a feed additive that intercepts the methanogenesis process and therefore reduces enteric CH4 production. However, nitrate poisoning of ruminants and rumen microbes has been reported, in particular through inhibition of fibrolytic bacteria and methanogens. Furthermore, feeding nitrate might increase the concentration of nitrate and nitrite in milk and urine. Nitrate tastes bitter which lowers the palatability of nitrate-based diets and may cause lower feed intake, leading to lower levels of production.
The use though of nitrate as a feed additive in precision indoor feeding systems has shown promise, reads the publication. Its use within grazing or non-total mixed ration (TMR) systems presents a major challenge, it added. More work is required on the use of nitrate as a CH4 reducing mitigation to manage any unintended detrimental impacts on the animal and its outputs.
3-NOP (3-nitrooxypropanol) is a novel and specific small molecule that can stop the action of an enzyme called 'methyl-coenzyme M reductase' (MCR), according to the report.
This enzyme is key in the last step of the process which generates CH4 in the rumen of animals. 3-NOP has been found to reduce CH4 from ruminants, although the dose and application strategy needs to be tailored depending on the types of animals. Currently, 3-NOP can only be used in conjunction with concentrate feeding, with only a very small amount (100-200mg/kg dry matter per day) needed.
Studies have found long-lasting improvements in animal performance such as increased production of milk fat or milk protein, said the authors. As a feed additive, 3-NOP requires regulatory approval by various countries.
Seaweeds provide a large group of essential nutrients as well as numerous secondary plant compound, with some of these secondary compounds found to reduce CH4 emissions when offered to cattle and sheep.
Much work continues to identify raw seaweed products as well as the active compounds responsible for the reduction in CH4 emissions. Certain seaweeds also contain omega-3, omega-6 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids. Algae-based feeds may improve the fatty acid profile of diets, increase the fat content, and reduce somatic cell counts in milk. However, seaweeds may also contain inorganic elements and heavy metals that, at high levels, may cause toxicity in animals and humans. As such, work on seaweeds continues, but the use of the active compounds contained within them shows promise to be a future key mitigation strategy to reduce emissions from cattle and sheep.

Microbes Matter: Meet the Small but Mighty Microbiomes – Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
Smithsonian scientists have found that the gut microbiomes of black rhinos in human care are very different than the gut microbiomes of wild rhinos, in part due to differences in their diets. Wild rhinos had more bacteria that help break down the complex plant fibers of wild plants. The gut microbiomes of zoo rhinos were better able to digest starchy foods. This is just one example of how scientists and zoo nutritionists can work together to understand and create diverse diets for zoo animals that provide the right foods and nutrients to maintain healthy, balanced gut microbiomes.
Microbiomes are also some animals best defenders! The vast majority of bacteria found in animal microbiomes are beneficial, but occasionally some not-so-nice bacteria come along and cause an animal to get sick. Just like stomach bugs in people, some bacterial infections in animals' guts can be pretty nasty. Good bacteria can often fight off the bad ones, but sometimes they need help.
Smithsonian scientists are already applying this concept to find out if skin microbes in frogs and salamanders can help fight off the deadly chytrid fungus. And this idea could help other animals too. For example, scientists are investigating whether microbes found in one species of Hawaiian honeycreeper (the amakihi) help it to survive introduced avian malaria, and whether these microbes would also protect the many other honeycreeper species for which this introduced disease is deadly.

Madison is a fan of doing healthy, food-based cleanses to jump start her health. At the start of 2021 she committed to a 30-day clean-eating plan, fueling up on veggies, proteins, and healthy fats and eliminating dairy, alcohol, and artificial sugars. In order to set herself up for success, she completely emptied her refrigerator and started from scratch, filling it with only foods on her cleanse.
Madison drinks a veggie-fueled beverage when she wakes up. "I always try to do some kind of juice in the morning. I do celery juice for skin purposes. I don't have the best skin so I try doing that," she said. "Most adults should eat the equivalent of 2 1/2 cups of vegetables a day. The exact amount you need depends on your age, sex and level of physical activity. Any type of vegetable counts, whether it's raw, cooked, fresh, frozen or canned. Vegetable juice counts, too. Just make sure it's 100 percent vegetable juice and low in sodium," says the Mayo Clinic.
Madison trains with a pro. "I work out with a guy named Gunnar, who has been a friend of mine for so long. Him and his girlfriend are great. They help me with meal plans and stuff like that just to keep me on track because they know that I've worked hard," she said. "I would say he's more of an accountability coach, which I appreciate 'cause sometimes I can get into the work mode and mom mode and put the health on the back burner."
Madison works out consistently but not every day. "I try to work out at least four days a week, sometimes it's three days. It's all generally mental health for me, I crave it. I definitely feel that it makes me a little bit less on edge," she revealed to Bravo.
Madison admits she is "very competitive," so group fitness helps motivate her. "I love working out with other people, all ages, all sizes, because when the girl beside me is giving me a run for my money, you know I'm running fast. I'm like, 'OK, girl. Let's go,'" she told Bravo.

A Milford woman lost 150 pounds and transformed her life after years of struggle – Hometown Life
For years, Nicole Gibson always dreaded the moment when she would need to buckle her airplane seatbelt.
The frequent fliers fear was not of an impending crash, but of the humiliating possibility that she might not be able to strap herself in due to her obesity.
After losing 150 pounds with the help of bariatric surgery, this is no longer a worry. Gibson can easily buckle a belt across her slim, 55, 120-pound frame.
When I got my weight downand I got in a plane and put my seatbelt on, that was my non-scale victory, Gibson said. I thought, Holy cow, I dont have to struggle to put my seatbelt on now.
The 52-year-old Milford resident recently celebrated the third anniversary of her surgery and only wishes she had done it sooner.
Gibson waged a battle against excessive poundsthat began in her late teens and continued throughout her entire adult life with little success in diet programs including Weight Watchers and Atkins, no-carb and low-carb, and even a horrible HCG diet that restricted her to 500 calories a day.
Despite all her attempts at nearly every diet, nothing worked at decreasing the pounds, and meanwhile, her health problems were increasing along with her weight. Gibson endured sleep apnea, joint pain, pre-diabetes, and low energy.
Her weight took a toll on her mental health, too, as she suffered low self-esteem and a lack of confidence.
In her job as a Novi manufacturing companys training facility coordinator, she felt she had to work harder to prove herself.
In the world we live in, you are judged immediately by your appearance, Gibson said, adding she could never find nice things to wear.
At her heaviest, her clothing size was a 22and she weighed 273 pounds in fall2018. She had just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism when her family physician recommended bariatric surgery.
It certainly wasnt going to be a cheap and painless fix to a years-long battle.
It is a tough thing to go through, its not the easy way out for sure, Gibson said.
However, Dr. Wendy Miller has seen an increasing number of patients over the years at the Beaumont Health Weight Control Centerwhere she is medical director, as they seek the surgery to finally conquer their obesity.
Unfortunately, it has gotten worse over the years, Miller said. The percentage of people with obesity has increased and a lot of people have gained weight during the pandemic, too.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 73.6 % of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight, including 42.4% who are considered obesewith a body mass index of 30 or greater. Obesity prevalence hasincreased from 30.5% in 1999-2000 to 42.4% in 2017-2018.
COVID has exacerbated sedentary lifestyles that were already on the rise. Miller points to increased use of devices including cell phones and social media and in addition to more sitting, more consumption of processed, high-sugar foods and beverages.
All of this has definitely led to an increase in the number of bariatric surgery patients, both locally and nationally. There is a larger percentage who qualify for the surgery as well, but who choose not to have it, or arent aware they are a candidate for the surgery which is commonly covered by medical insurance.
The patients Miller and the Beaumont Health team sees are ones just like Gibson they have tried diets, exercise, medications, and lost, but still regained the weight. Surgery was not their first resort, but the one that they hope ultimately will turn their weight, and their lives, around.
Its really rewarding to see the transformation in people, their whole outlook changes, very positive environment and fun for our whole staff to see improvement in quality of life for people, Miller said. Several different clinical trials show bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for people with severe weight problems, more effective than diet and exercise."
To qualify for surgery, a patients body mass index (weight in relation to height) must be 40 or above, or greater than 35 with at least one weight-related medical issue, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea or high cholesterol. They must also undergo a psychological evaluation to ensure they are in a good mental state for a positive outcome post-surgery, since a drastic change starts, but doesnt end, on the operating table.
Gibson had the most common bariatric procedure offered by Beaumont Health, the gastric bypass surgery, in which the stomach is divided into two sections, resulting in a one-ounce pouch about the size of an egg and a reduced appetite.
Millersaid the surgery is considered very safe, with a low risk that is comparable to gall bladder surgery, and minimally invasive. Patients typically return to work within two weeks.
Gibson was nervous pre-surgery,but also excited and well-preparedwith six months of meetings pre-surgery on diet, exercise and what would be expected of her in the future.
You are signing up for a lot when you get the surgery, she said. You dont just get this and are done, they retrain your brain and start you on the path of being more mindful of eating.
Gibson lost 30 pounds in preparation for her March 18, 2019, surgeryand on the operating table weighed about 250 pounds. She left the hospital the following day and in the days that followed, consumed a lot of soup and yogurt, mashed potatoes and soft foods in general.

What she had to give up entirely was carbonated beverages. Because she had previously drank Diet Coke every day, all day long, she thought this might be tough, but it wasnt. She now drinks coffee and iced tea and a lot of water. She avoids fried foods. She was never a meat eater, but she focuses on her protein intake by continuing to eat fish, cheese, and eggs.
The body cant process high levels of sugar after gastric bypass. While she was never big on sweets, she has cut down on carbohydrates including pasta, rice, and bread. She eats smaller meals, more frequently. In the morning she might have a cheese stickor a hard-boiled egg. A few hours later, a yogurt, then two hours after that, some almonds. Dinner consists of maybe a piece of fish and a small salad. She eats a lot of beans black, kidney, pinto, or refried for the protein.
She takes vitamin supplementsand her exercise routine simply is walking.
The weight began falling off instantaneously and continued for a full year and a half. In her support group, people told her dont go and buy a new wardrobe frequently. But it was fun for Gibson, a thrift store shopper who in addition to her full-time job also works at the Clothing Cove in Milford.
She found a lot of encouragement from her friends there, too, as well as from her parents and best friend Cathy, and said she lucked out in that way, as she couldnt imagine going through such a major life change without all the support she had.
In total, Gibson lost 150 pounds and 70 inches in the course of about 18 months. She now maintains her weight between 121 to 124 pounds, and alternates between a size 2 and size 4. Besides her improved weight and size, her complexion is better, her hair is better, and her overall health and outlook is better. She is looking forward to living a longer, healthier life and leaving the burden of weight she carried behind.
I think everyones point to go forward with surgery might be different, Gibson said. I wish I would have done it many years prior, but the right time was when it was and that is what I did. I absolutely feel like a new person, with more energy and increased self-confidence. It was life-changing.

RGCON 2022 Turns the Spotlight on Urological Cancers – Devdiscourse
New Delhi [India], April 14 (ANI/NewsVoir): The 20th edition of RGCON, the annual international conference of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC) Delhi will be held on the theme of "Frontiers in Uro Oncology" on April 15, 16 and 17, 2022 at New Delhi. In tandem with the multimodal approach being used to treat cancers, all the three departments of medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology have come together to hold RGCON 2022. As one-of-its-kind conclave of medical fraternity, RGCON holds a special place in the healthcare calendar of the country. RGCON will have faculty from all leading hospitals in India including AIIMS, Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai, Varanasi, HCG Bangalore, HCG Ahmedabad and about 15 faculties drawn from major cancer care centres around the world.
With more basic research, real-world clinical practice patterns, and in-depth discussions of data, RGCON 2022 will help to expand the knowledge and explore the latest in Oncology for all the participants. The scientific program includes workshop, lectures, and panel discussions/debates & has been designed to include diagnostic as well as therapeutic Uro-Oncology.
Speaking about the new drug therapies, Dr Vineet Talwar Director - Medical Oncology, RGCIRC said, "Earlier it used to be only chemotherapy or hormonal therapy for treatment of urinary tract cancers. Increasingly, targeted therapy and immunotherapy are assuming a major role since the side effects of these therapies are far less and translate in improvement in the quality of life. For instance in case of cancer of the urinary bladder where patients generally present themselves in the elderly age group, immunotherapy can be easily tolerated as compared to conventional chemotherapy. Secondly, the results of immunotherapy drugs are found to be equal to chemotherapy or even better so, these can be used alone, or in combination with chemotherapy drugs to potentiate their benefit." "Today, the detection rates of urinary tract cancers have gone up because of specialized techniques available. For example, in prostate cancer, there is a special kind of a PSMA (Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen) PET CT scan, that provides better sensitivity and specificity as compared to the conventional FDG PET CT Scan," said Dr Talwar.
Symptoms of urinary tract cancers such as bleeding in urine, burning in urine, restriction in the flow of urine manifest much earlier and can be cured if diagnosed early and treatment commenced. However awareness is an issue in India besides financial constraints. If a patient is under treatment of a general practitioner and not getting cured for 4-6 weeks, there needs to be a high index of suspicion and one should go for higher investigation. Affordability of targetted therapy and immunotherapy drugs is a practical issue. Fortunately in some cases, generic drugs have come in which are more affordable. Dr Talwar advised in favour of a healthy lifestyle, proper diet, exercise and normal sleeping hours and avoiding addiction to smoking/alcohol to prevent the cancers to a large extent.
According to Dr Munish Gairola, Director Radiation Oncology RGCIRC, "Radiation oncology as a field has progressed rapidly especially in terms of precision and targeted treatments. One such example is the use of cyberknife that uses hypofractionation; high dose per fraction which reduces treatment time considerably. Similarly another technique that will be discussed at RGCON'22 is proton beam therapy which has revolutionised management of urological malignancies especially prostatic cancer. The uniqueness of this conference lies in the sheer amount of human exposure present at the conference with both national and international senior faculties with exclusive working experience in urological cancers." RGCON is a prime example of a multidisciplinary approach with high end academic discussion involving case discussions, clinical oriented scenarios and technical demonstrations on contouring and planning. Prostatic brachytherapy is well practiced treatment option where many renowned institutes follow uniform international consensus on LDR or HDR. This is the reason we have kept a session where both Indian and international perspectives are discussed and correlated.
According to Dr Amitabh Singh, Consultant, Department of Genito-Uro Oncology at RGCIRC, "New techniques for the cancer surgery will be a centre of attraction at the RGCON. For instance in case of prostate cancer surgery, Dr S Rawal will be demonstrating Retizius Sparing Radical Prostatectomy. For kidney cancers, 3D reconstruction model will be discussed that helps in planning of the surgery as it has been shown to decrease the intraoperative time besides post-operative complications." "Robotic surgery helps us exercise control much like open surgery with the advantages of the laparoscopic surgeries like very small incision, less blood loss, less post-operative pain, early post-operative recovery and early discharge from the hospital and also less post-operative wound related complications," added Dr Singh.
Among the prostate, urinary bladder and kidney cancers, prostate cancer is more common. Worldwide it is the second most common cancer. In India too, the incidence is very high since we are detecting more and more prostate cancers in their early stages with the help of biomarkers like PSA. "For kidney cancer, there are three risk factors namely obesity, high blood pressure and smoking. For bladder cancer, the most common risk factor is smoking and exposure to heavy metals like arsenic. It has been observed that obesity, high fat diet, consumption of red meat, are all a known risk factor for the prostate cancer," added Dr Amitabh.

Weight loss tips: Fitness experts share natural ways to get rid of belly fat – Hindustan Times
In the age of casually passing health tips that make it easy to fall into the trap of fitness misconceptions, few know that a glass of detox water alone cannot make you healthy nor help you loose weight as health experts assert that there is a combination of activities and a complete meal plan that needs to be followed, throughout the day and done the right way, to be able to see the benefits. It is no secret that the number of food challenges and the competition to flaunt culinary skills on social media platforms during the quarantine made one and all succumb to the pressure of binge eating calories while those who tried to stick to a diet plan were left feeling hungry or unsatisfied.
A major bane of months of Covid-19 lockdowns and work from home routine was that it cut down massively on our outdoor activities and added extra unwanted kilos to our couch potato selves. While regular exercise and working out is crucial to seeing a difference in our weighing scale, some achievable changes to our diets and simple tricks can speed up the weight loss process.
However, sticking to the diet becomes very difficult when one is trying to do low carb and low fat at the same time hence, it is important to tweak how and when we intake some meals and use some simple tricks differently in our lifestyle pattern to lose weight quickly. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Vansh Chhabra, Senior Nutritionist at Wellversed, shared, Achieving a desirable weight isnt just about a diet or plan or program, it is simply about adopting a sustainable and healthy form of lifestyle patterns which takes time and effort.
He added, It is not just about quick tips, fads or shortcuts but more about committing to a consistent approach and maintaining nutritious eating practices, adhering to a good daily routine (hygiene, sleep cycle) and ensuring physical motility. These habits must become an integral part of ones life and not just for the sake of reducing belly fat or losing weight.
Echoing the same, Gaurav Bansal, Health Coach at MyHealthBuddy, revealed, Im going to be 100% honest with you here and tell you that theres no special or specific way to reduce only your belly fat and trying to get rid of fat from only one area of your body is like trying to remove water from one area of a pool. Its impossible. The aim should be to reduce your overall body fat, in that process; youll notice fat loss on your belly too.
Weight loss tips:
Sharing a few effective ways to burn belly fat while reiterating the fact that our diet plays an extremely important role in weight loss, Sonya Khandelwal, Entrepreneur, Life Coach and Fitness Guru, listed -
1. Drinking luke warm water with honey early in the morning on an empty stomach will not only cut and melt the unnecessary fat but most importantly it creates a balance in the hormones and gives a boost to the immune system.
2. Increase of protein intake: We all know that protein is an important micronutrient for human growth to burn belly fat. One must always consume double the protein as compared to your actually weigh which will help gain a good amount of muscle percentage. Protein may be particularly effective in reducing abdominal fat.
3. Accupressure: While acupuncture uses needles to stimulate the various pressure points around the body, acupressure is done by stimulating these points through massage therapy. Acupressure is believed to be effective in reducing stress, boosting digestion, and improving metabolism, all of which play a role in weight management.
4. Cardio exercise is an effective way to improve your health and burn calories. Cardio in any form be it boxing, CrossFit, cyclic, running, etc is one of the most effective forms of exercise for reducing belly fat.
5. Increase fiber intake: Fiber expands in your stomach and also takes time to digest, which means you feel fuller for longer.
6. It is also important to make sure that you are getting the right balance of vitamins and minerals in your diet because too many or too few can have negative effects on your health.
Suggesting some of the most easiest yet safest practices that gradually lead to healthy weight loss, Nutritionist Vansh Chhabra recommended:
1. Begin your day with a high protein-fat breakfast - Avoid starting your day with a carb loaded diet rather stick to proteins and fats. This not only reduces the calorie intake but also keeps cravings into check. Cut down on refined carbohydrates and starches which provide instant boosts of energy thereby aim at adding complexity and sustainability to the diet by carefully structuring your plate, for instance, cover half plate with high fibre veggies (both cooked & raw salad), one-quarter of good quality protein (whole grains, legumes, chicken, fish, eggs, etc.) and one quarter or lesser should include complex carbohydrates or fermented probiotics like curd, all prepared in healthy fats rich in MCTs like coconut oil, olive oil, sesame oil, avocado oil, etc. This will drive the body towards using the alternate source of energy i.e. stored fat.
2. Eliminate all forms of sugar - Instead of cutting/reducing, completely eliminate all forms of sugar sources from your diet i.e. both white and brown. Refined sugars provide empty calories to the body which have no proven benefit. Even honey and jaggery being reputed as healthy sugars should be avoided as they contain the same amount of calories as table sugar. A diet loaded in sugars is nothing but ultimately converted to stored fats. Move away from processed/packaged foods as they are loaded with trans-fat, sugars and sodium, altogether everything that hinders fat loss.
3. Indulge in physical activity - An active physical routine fastens the process of healthy weight loss and ensures healthy metabolism. Any form of physical routine like brisk walking, jogging, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, gymnasium, etc. can be consistently followed. Also, specific abdomen focussed exercises like crunches, leg lifts, planks, lunges, sit-ups, etc. can target belly fat. Workout increases Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), induces growth and strengthening of muscles and thereby uplifting the overall mood of mind and body. The body loses overall fat but usually the belly fat goes away first, therefore 30-45 minutes of moderate intensity workout should be practised regularly.
4. Keep yourself hydrated - Avoid sweetened beverages and fruit juices rather switch to plain water, sparkling water and herbal teas (green tea, chamomile tea, ginger tea, etc.) as they flush out toxins from the body and provide antioxidants. Maintain distance from carbonated beverages and alcohol.
5. Practice mindful eating - Avoid any form of gadget distractions while having your meal. Set your own plate and focus on the food to build a healthy relationship with it. Eat mindfully and catch signals of satiety. Keep a check on the portion size and track your calorie intake. Plan your meals in advance with utmost care and keeping the macros in mind.
6. Say NO to stress and anxiety as it spikes cortisol hormone production which ultimately leads to visceral adiposity. Practice a good sleep cycle and give yourself at least 7 hours of peaceful sleep.
Echoing similar piece of advises on healthy methods for burning bely fat, Health Coach Gaurav Bansal shared:
1. Start walking! If you feel like walking isnt your cup of tea, you can indulge in any activity of your choice. Cycling, football, swimming, badminton etc. As long as you are active and moving, anything works!
2. Now with all this physical activity, you need to make sure that youre hydrating well and your diet is nourishing enough. That calls for a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole foods!
3. Focus your meals around protein followed by healthy fats and carbs! Protein is a structural macronutrient, meaning, your body is made up of it. Without protein, your bones, skin, hair, nails, muscles would take a toll.
4. Healthy fats provide energy, absorb nutrients, produce important hormones and supports cell growth! Think about this the next time you say fat makes you fat, it does not!
5. We love carbs and so should you! Its a major source of energy and helps you perform daily tasks. Oh and its DELICIOUS. No food is out of bounds, it never should be. Indulgences are important and cravings need to be addressed but keep in mind to minimise added sugar and highly processed foods.
6. Sleep for 7-8 hours every day! Quality sleep is probably the most underrated tool for weight loss. Poor sleep effects your cortisol which inhibits weight loss. It also impacts your hunger hormones, increasing your chances of binging the next day.
The bottom line is, no diet routine works magically overnight as a consistent and sustainable way of living is the key to achieve your health goals and a mix-n-match of all such good practices accelerates success. Understand that weight loss looks different for everyone and despite following all good practices the weight remains same or attains plateau, it can be an indication of underlying gut or health issue which needs to be medically examined.

My Mom Showed Love Through Food, Yet Championed Thinness – Healthline
For every moment of joy and love I had when she was sharing food with me, I was also plagued by comments about keeping my weight down. The general idea was to eat, but not too much.
Food is important in so many cultures. From family dinners to big Christmas lunches to simply offering your friend a snack when they visit your home, food can be used to express love in various ways.
While I was growing up, my mom expressed her love through food too. For her, this practice was rooted in her Chinese culture, which has a focus on food and the way we enjoy it.
Traditional Chinese dishes passed down through the generations are just as delicious as fancy meals at restaurants in the city, so long as you are with your family and eating them together.
My mom and I regularly ate Chinese food together, enjoying the different flavors and ingredients more than my white father.
It was one of the few things that bonded us. In hindsight, it was apparent that she and I didnt have the same interests or beliefs, and we were never close by any measure of the word. But we did enjoy food together, especially while watching absurd Chinese soap operas.
She would bring me dumplings or noodles at 3 a.m. when I was jet-lagged after flying home to Hong Kong from university near London or buy me chicken nuggets from McDonalds if she happened to pass one on her way home because she knew they were my favorite meal from the fast-food chain.
Shed stock the fridge with Swiss roll cake and Yakult because I loved the simplicity of them, and cut up pieces of mango and melon for me while I was studying for my exams at 15.
Our house was always full of food, snacks, and soft drinks anything you wanted, we probably had. I loved those small moments, when I could tell she loved me, cared for my well-being, and wanted to ensure that I wasnt hungry or distracted from whatever I was doing because of it.
My mom was not necessarily a loving person, and she didnt say I love you nearly as often as one might want or think is normal for a parent, but her joy in preparing food for me was enough.
This occurred outside of our home, too, as we congregated with our extended family in Chinese tea houses to eat an even wider variety of dim sum and later washed it down with fantastical desserts or bubble tea.
Michele Theil
My mom was obsessed with being skinny. As a young woman, she was beautiful and thin and even worked as a model for a few years before meeting my dad.
When I was a kid, she was already in her fifties and had gained a typical amount of weight for a woman of her age. But she wasnt happy with her body, and she went to great lengths to ensure that I wouldnt end up the same way.
Her worries were exacerbated by my dad being diagnosed with clinical obesity both a contributor to and the result of several lifelong health issues.
The desire for thinness is also rooted in Chinese culture. Many Chinese girls and young women are naturally small in stature and therefore quite thin. Just walk into any clothing store in Hong Kong that doesnt come from another country youll be hard-pressed to find clothes bigger than a size 10.
This might sound old-fashioned, considering that much of society has moved toward a more inclusive weight standard. For example, tools like the body mass index (BMI) have been debunked as inaccurate or misleading.
But this line of thinking persists, even as size inclusivity becomes more mainstream.
Public health and cultural messaging still tightly link BMI and weight with overall health, often suggesting that a higher BMI contributes to negative health effects. However, the same can be true of weight or BMI that is too low.
In a September 2021 article for VICE, Viola Chou noted that Chinese women were falling prey to a Thin Fad, where the pressure to be thin actually threatens their mental and physical health.
A popular saying online stated that Good girls dont exceed 50 kg (about 110 pounds), VICE reported.
My mom very much embodied that saying. For me to be skinny was a positive reflection on her and her parenting, even if she herself was not at what she would consider the ideal weight.
She would encourage my skinniness by commenting on how much food I was eating, how much weight Id gained, and whether I looked fat. It didnt matter to her whether I was at a typical weight for my age and height, just that I looked like the ideal skinny Chinese daughter she had always wanted.
For Lunar New Year, she would be ashamed to take me shopping for new clothing, which is a common tradition, because the traditional Chinese clothing (QiPao) I was meant to wear was not available in my size. I would have to get a QiPao specially made, tailored to my measurements, which was unacceptable to her.
As I grew older, the comments got more frequent, likely because she recognized that she would have less influence over what I ate and where I went as a teenager and because she feared that I would become stuck at my natural size.
I distinctly remember standing in front of a full-length mirror during one of my parents trips to London, where I now live, and saying that I liked the way I looked that day. My mom looked me up and down, scoffed, and said, You shouldnt be proud of that belly.
Another time, I sent a photo of myself and a friend during a university awards ceremony because I wanted to let my mom know I had won an outstanding achievement award. All she said was, Youve gained weight in your face. Stop eating.
By this point, I was 20 years old, but it didnt hurt any less than it had when I was 10. For every moment of joy and love I had when she was giving or sharing food with me, I was also plagued by comments about keeping my weight down. The general idea was to eat, but not too much.
Michele Theil
I remain confused by how those two key aspects of Chinese culture were able to come together for my mom. One emphasized eating joyfully, fully, and in abundance, while the other placed huge importance on being skinny and staying that way even if it meant starving myself.
My mom always said that she would make these comments about my eating habits and my weight out of love. She explained that she had to be the one to tell me that I was fat and needed to eat less because no one else would be as honest with me as she would, because shes my mom and she cares about my well-being.
But it was never about my well-being. She never took me to the doctors office to ensure that I was healthy or to see if I was eating abnormally or if I had an underlying issue that might affect my weight.
None of that mattered to her, even as my dad and other people in her life would say that I looked fine, or even good, and that I was eating an appropriate amount for a growing person.
I never felt like it was out of love, either. Every comment, no matter how underhanded or direct, would be like a stab to my heart. It hurt to hear that my mother, the woman who is supposed to champion me and love me no matter what, had a clear bias toward my being skinny.
It was never clear to me whether her love would be withheld if I really was as fat as she imagined me to be.
The way she treated me and her obsession with being skinny has been a major factor in ruining my relationship with food for several years. It is something that Ive worked hard to overcome, but its still a constant presence in my life especially in my low moments.
To this day, I think about the comments I mentioned above and the millions of others that could fill a Wolf Hall-length book.
When I was 15, I was driven, in part by her views, to dieting and anorexia-adjacent content on Tumblr. For a while, I was obsessed with being skinny, obtaining a thigh gap, and eating less.
For at least a year, I refused to eat most carbs, choosing instead to eat salad for lunch every day at school and smoothies for dinner. I was very skinny then, but it was detrimental to my mental health not to mention that I lost all love and enjoyment for the food Id grown up with.
Ive come a long way since then, but my relationship with food will never be what it was. I feel guilty when I eat three meals in a day instead of two, because I usually skip breakfast, and I am ashamed when I pop into McDonalds for some fries after a long day.
Though I have a designated snack cupboard in my home, it is very sparse and usually frequented only by my partner rather than by me.
I hear my moms comments when I want to indulge in a pizza or a cupcake, and Im disappointed that it takes a lot more out of me to be able to put these thoughts out of my mind and enjoy what Im eating than it did before.
My relationship with my mom is not great, either. There are lots of reasons for this that have nothing to do with her fatphobic and hurtful comments about my body, but those comments were not insignificant in my decision to set strict boundaries with her and cease all communication.
Her comments were not only due to her obsession with being skinny but also because she desired to exert a level of control over me that was easier to do if I had lower self-esteem.
I am thankful for my friends and for what Ive learned about our bodies, fatphobia, and food in the years since, because without them I would still be subjecting myself to her comments to this day.

There is a much healthier way of consuming raisins than eating them raw. Just like many other dry fruits you consume in summer, it is recommended by experts that you soak 15-20 raisins overnight and eat them the next morning for making use of them for weight loss. What happens when you soak raisins overnight? The unwanted minerals and vitamins get dissolved in the water, keeping only the required nutrients for quick absorption by the body.
Many studies show that consuming overnight soaked raisins boost nitric oxide levels in the body which increases nutrition absorption. Being rich in iron, raisins also help you beat anemia by increasing the production of red blood cells.
Raisin water is another way to lose weight and hydrate your body at the same time. You can boil 150 grams of raisins in two cups of water. Let it cool down and drink it.
Raisins are relatively low-calorie foods so they can curb your appetite without contributing to the calorie count. Raisins contain natural fruit sugars and leptin which have appetite suppressing properties. Along with keeping you satiated for long and reducing hunger pangs, Leptin can also kill fat cells by increasing the thermogenesis process.
One of the major contributing factors of raisins for weight loss that it improves your digestion. With about 3.3-4.5gms of dietary fiber per 100gms serving size, raisins work like prebiotics which significantly improve the growth of gut flora which is important for weight loss. Dietary fiber plays a crucial role in regulating bowel movements and flushing out the unwanted wastes from the body. By doing so, raisins help in balancing your body mass and lowering the risk of obesity.
Dieting combined with working out does wonders for weight loss. Raisins make a really good pre-workout snack as they are energy-dense foods which are rich in natural sugars like glucose and fructose, that quickly get converted into energy necessary for a workout.
