New Benefits of Bariatric Surgery Beyond Weight Loss: New Study – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Bariatric surgery is best known as a weight-loss tool when diet and exercise dont cut it. Research shows about 228,000 Americans undergo these procedures each year which is only about one percent of the eligible population. Now a new study reveals this surgery has benefits beyond weight loss.
Obesity is a national epidemic. More than one in three American adults is obese and about one in 13 is considered extremely obese. Weight loss procedures known as bariatric surgery can help people who have severe obesity lose weight. A new study led by Cleveland Clinic researchers shows the surgery might also help keep a persons liver healthy.
What happened was very dramatic, said Dr. Steven E. Nissen the Chief Academic Officer for the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic.
Fatty liver disease occurs when the liver becomes infiltrated with fat. It can lead to liver failure and theres no cure. Investigators studied 1,158 adults and found those who had bariatric surgery had an 88% lower risk of having their advanced fatty liver disease progress to cirrhosis, liver cancer, or liver-related death.
Get connected to a healthier life.
The reduction was as large as weve ever seen for any intervention for any disease, shared Nissen.
Researchers also found patients who had bariatric surgery had a 70% lower chance of developing serious cardiovascular issues, like heart attack and stroke. While there are some risks, doctors say the procedures are safe and effective options for those who are good candidates.
Other research has shown bariatric surgery may help improve or lower the risk of type two diabetes, sleep apnea, back pain, and depression.

Rebel Wilson Reveals She Has Weight Loss Haters On Her Own Team Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
Rebel Wilson has undeniably had an incredible year for herself. Not only is she the star of a new film being released in 2022 and a first-time children's book author, but she is also entering into the new year with an entirely new mindset on living a healthy life.
Back in 2020, the Australian star set out to lose weight and change her life around. Now, over 75 pounds down, the actress is continually wowing her Instagram followers with her new look. But for Wilson, her transformation was more about her health than her outward appearance.
Wilson recently said (via the Daily Telegraph) that, "it's not about being a certain size or body weight or anythingit's just about loving yourself and loving the journey that you're on."
And even though fans have shown their love and support for Wilson's life change, she's had unexpected pushback as well.
In a recent interview with CNN, Wilson shared about those who weren't as understanding of her decision to get healthy.
"I got a lot of pushback from people on my own team, actually, here in Hollywood," she said in the interview.
When Wilson initially shared her plans with her management team, they expressed confusion behind her decision.
"When I said 'okay I'm gonna do this year of healthI feel like I'm really gonna physically transform and change my life,'" said Wilson. "They were like, 'why? Why would you wanna do that?'"
Her management team's pushback is most likely due to the fact that she built her career on playing larger characters.
"I was earning millions of dollars being, you know, the funny fat girl," she said.
In the end, Wilson knew that her health was on the line, so she chose to set out on her weight loss journey.
"I knew deep down inside some of the emotional eating behaviors I was doing were not healthy," she told CNN.

Doctors Say People Who Start Doing This Now Will Lose Weight Faster In The New Year – SheFinds
One of the biggest misconceptions about New Years resolutions is that theyre one size fits all. While some people *are* motivated by a goal (and thus, are perfect candidates for a January refresh), others may actually be worse off by being forced to follow rulesespecially during this time of year.
Some people dont do well with rules and most people dont do well with rules around the holidays. Dr. Amy Lee, board certified doctor in internal medicine, medical nutrition and obesity medicine and partner of Nucific, explains.
After years of the pandemic, there is a build up of excitement to reconnect again, aka enjoy alcohol or parties foods with friends, she explains. Some people feel entitled to eat, drink and be merry this holiday seasonand for those people, the best thing to do is just that and not start your New Years resolutions early.
People may actually rebel against rules that are placed upon them (even by themselves). These people and are more likely to cheat or overeat after them, she warns. For those who dont do well with restrictions, go ahead and just start after the holidays.
For others, however, especially those are tired of being tired, the best thing they can do is start your healthy eating plan now. Dr. Lee recommends starting to make changes now so you dont shock yourself with an additional 10 lb. weight gain, over the holiday season.
Additionally, when we gain weight, we can potentially re-inflate or expand our fat cells, which can cause us to crave for more foods in the future, she warns. Knowing that, you may want to just be mindful about your eating habits now.
The truth is that we are all driven by different motivating factors, and as with *anything* in life, its best to decide whats best for younot some cookie cutter concept of a resolution that starts on January 1st. Here are Dr. Lees additional tips for hitting your weight loss goals this year.
If one of your New Years resolutions is related to weight management, then practicing early vs later will prevent you from going down that rabbit trail in eating (or drinking) whatever that come at you. I think we have this sense of entitlement as if we lost all these days of socializing with friends and familywhich may cause us to be more liberal in our actions, Dr. Lee explains.
Conversely, if we start thinking being the better version of ourselves, we may just enter into the new year with better and more positive outlook. We may even feel more energy and motivated to continue losing weight into the new year, aka, well get a major leg up.
Dr. Lee suggests looking at your typical daily intake and trying to understand what items contain refined sugar or simple carbs that can be minimized.
Most common foods that I tell people to take into reconsideration are: soda, fruit juice from concentrate, instant oatmeal, and white bread. These foods contain little nutritional value.
If you look around your kitchen counters and see gifts of cheese, crackers, cookies, holiday candies and bottles of wineyoure not alone. Many of us have tons of empty calories sitting around because people have given them to us as fist. But guess whatyou dont have to eat them all yourself, Dr. Lee says! I oftentimes would bring them to work with me and share it with my staff and everyone appreciates it.
I am always a true believer of eating consistently and eating well all the time, Dr. Lee emphasizes. Accept the fact that there are a lot of cheap foods that are packed of calories, salt and preservatives, and choose to nourish the body with good lean proteins, good fatty acids and fruits and vegetables with good minerals and vitamins. Because your body deserves it!

The 5:2 diet: A popular way of intermittent fasting to lose weight – The Indian Express
Intermittent fasting (IF) is the latest diet trend being followed by millions of people around the world. Fitness enthusiasts, people trying to lose weight, and those with prediabetes are fond of IF. In my opinion, the craze for this diet may be due to its non-conventional nature.
Instead of asking you what you should eat, this way of eating guides you to focus on when you should eat your food. 5:2 diet is a type of IF that involves eating normally for five days a week without thinking about calories and consuming no more than 500 to 600 calories on the remaining two days. This is a more lifestyle-oriented pattern of IF that is less restrictive and easier to follow. There has been considerable research demonstrating the potential benefits of the 5:2 diet when it comes to weight loss and optimum metabolic health.
In spite of this, not everyone can follow this diet, and those who adopt this way of eating must understand that nutritious, whole-food eating is essential, even if intermittent fasting doesnt ask for it.
Weight loss, metabolic syndromes and 5:2 diet
A scientific 5:2 IF is effective in ensuring sustainable weight loss. In a 2021 randomised control trial conducted in London, 18 per cent of participants lost weight on the 5:2 diet, compared with 15 per cent in a conventional weight control regimen. In addition, when asked to rate each of the interventions, participants in the 5:2 diet group were more likely to recommend the intervention to others or be willing to continue the diet.
The 5:2 diet is as effective as conventional calorie restriction that is defined by consuming 20 per cent fewer calories than you burn every day, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The 5:2 diet could offer women greater flexibility and choice when it comes to weight loss or managing gestational diabetes, as recently reported by researchers at the University of South Australia.
The University of Illinois at Chicago study found that dieters who followed the 4:3 protocol (similar to 5:2 diet) lost an average of 5 kg without losing muscle mass, compared to a control group who didnt diet. In addition, they reduced their triglyceride level by 20 per cent, their leptin level by 40 per cent, and their CRP level, a key inflammation indicator.
What to eat on a 5:2 diet?On days when you consume 500 to 600 calories, you should plan your diet accordingly. Make sure you choose low-calorie foods that are filling. Among the best choices are cauliflower rice, plain yogurt or curd, green leafy vegetables, low-sugar fruits, legumes, lean meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy-based protein like paneer, soy-based protein like tofu. Low starchy veggies like cucumber, mushrooms, bottle gourd, pumpkin, and green beans are great staples during the fast days. Include healthy fats such as nuts, seeds and fatty fish in your diet for steady energy flow. You can incorporate a variety of foods at once without putting much effort into cooking with soups and salads. Avoid refined carbohydrates, sugar, and sugary drinks, which will spike your blood sugar levels and leave you hungry very quickly. Being hungry could affect your mood.
You can eat when you like. Some people prefer eating several smaller meals throughout the day, while others prefer to eat one large meal.
What to drink on a 5:2 diet? You are not required to follow any specific guidelines for drinking during the five days. You should, however, be mindful of drinking non-sugary fluids on fasting days. To not exceed 500 calories, drink plain water, cucumber or fruit-infused water, coconut water, black coffee or green tea.
Fitting this eating pattern into your lifestyle increases the likelihood of you sticking with it.
Sample meal plans for Indians on 5:2 protocol fasting daysYou can break your 500 calories into three meals throughout the day.
Day 1:Breakfast:25 g Greek yogurt topped with 4 almonds. Calories: 68.Lunch:Broccoli-carrot or lauki-tomato soup with 0.5 teaspoon of butter. Calories: 122Dinner:Chicken (100 g) and rice (30 g cooked) makes this lemon and chicken stir fry rice that is super filling. Vegetarians and vegans can add beans, tofu or paneer. Calories: 310Total = 500 calories
Day 2:Breakfast:One boiled egg, one banana, one cup green tea. Calories 178Lunch:1 bowl cauliflower rice (100 g) with 150 g fish or paneer curry. Calories 210Dinner:Vegetable soup with 1 teaspoon ghee/butter. Calories 110Total = 498 calories
Its important to eat protein, fiber, and healthy fats throughout your fasting days to ensure optimum nutrition.
In a nutshell If done correctly, the 5:2 eating pattern is convenient, flexible, and brings multiple health benefits. There are drawbacks to the diet, too, such as you may eat more than 500 calories if you do not calculate properly, you may feel hungry if you consume too few calories or refined carb-based foods during the fasting days.
Its important to consult a nutrition professional to plan your meal. Although timing is the key component to determine success in this diet, what you eat is important, too. Remember, you can never outrun bad nutrition.

12 Women Reveal How They Dealt With The Societal Pressure To Lose Weight After Pregnancy – ScoopWhoop
Women face a whole lot of societal pressure pertaining to their appearances, in general. But the pressure definitely amplifies during and after pregnancy.
Women usually have a ton of opinions thrown at them about what they should look like after giving birth, about how they should lose weight to go back to what they looked before pregnancy. And it's infuriating, honestly. Because, giving birth to a child is no joke!

Biologically speaking,
1. Your hips had to adjust to allow for birth, and to redistribute weight so you don't fall forward when walking.
2. Your organs all shifted to allow for an expanding uterus.
3. Your hair growth changed because of hormones that are there to support the pregnancy.
4. Your bone density has changed.
5. Your breasts started producing milk - thereby changing and possibly creating stretch-marks.
6. Our skin stretched, and often would result in loose skin or stretch marks or both or neither.
And these are just the 1st six changes I could think of. Many of the changes are permanent. You made another human! You are a goddess. Why would you want to go backwards on that?

Coffee With Lemon for Weight Loss – Can Adding Lemon to Coffee Help You Lose Weight? – GoodHousekeeping.com
Did you ever wonder why coffee bars don't offer a lemon-flavored latte? Well, not only does the idea of squeezing a sour lemon in a bitter cup of joe not have nearly the same flavorful appeal as adding cinnamon or chocolate, but the acid in the lemon juice would curdle any milk smoothing out your drink. Still, this hasn't stopped a barrage of TikTok users from mixing instant coffee with hot water and lemon juice, sucking it down with a comedic grimace on their face, and claiming that the drink is a fast and easy way to lose weight. In fact, the hashtag #lemoncoffee now has more than 8 million views, and there are countless YouTube videos claiming the coffee-lemon hack is the "Best Belly Fat Burner!!" magically melting away the pounds in just 3, 7 or 9 days.
Oh, please.
My first thought when I heard about this trend is that it doesn't sound very tasty! says Alexandra Sowa, MD, a metabolic health physician, clinical professor medicine at NYU School of Medicine and founder of SoWell Health. (While coffee swimming with lemon juice does sound rather mouth-puckering if you're used to a creamy, sweetened morning brew, there is an Algerian tradition of drinking Mazagran, which is basically iced coffee with a slice of lemon.) But as far as weight-loss goes? "There is no evidence that there is any particular benefit in drinking these two ingredients together," Dr. Sowa says.
So where did this idea come from, and how did it take off? Well, if you think back to the craze for Bulletproof Coffee a few years back, plus the long history of detox teas, celery juice diets , apple cider vinegar and every other liquid-based weight-loss hack of the last few decades, there has always been an idea that chugging down some magic potion can give you the body you desire, without having to adjust your eating or exercise habits. And this one in particular combines two things you probably have on your kitchen counter right now. "It's most likely appealing because the combo is easy, inexpensive and natural, points out Florida-based dietitian Maryann Walsh, RD. There is confusion about so many things in the world of nutrition like artificial sweeteners, dairy products and GMOs, so by using two items which are pretty much as close to natural as possible, coffee and lemon, you're likely to gain trust easily, even when the actual science of whether or not this combo actually works is lacking.
Editor's note: We want to acknowledge that weight loss, health and body image are complex subjects before deciding to go on a diet, we invite you gain a broader perspective by reading our exploration into the hazards of diet culture.
As far as TikTok trends or "challenges" go, at least this one seems fairly harmless. It reportedly gained traction when someone edited clips of a noted Los Angeles eye doctor to make it look as if he endorsed the drink (spoiler alert: He did not). But most importantly, it combines two pieces of science that have a little bit of truth behind them, making it just believable enough to gain traction.
Black coffee, which is almost calorie-free, has long been a staple of diet plans. That's of course thanks to the caffeine, a stimulant that can rev up your body's engine for the day. Dr. Sowa explains how: Caffeine works by blocking a neurotransmitter called adenosine, which can lead to an increase in stimulating neurotransmitters like dopamine, which helps you feel more awake and energizedthats why we all reach for our morning coffee, she says. While there is some evidence that this process may increase your basal metabolism rate (the amount of energy your cells burn simply by keeping your basic body functions chugging along), Dr. Sowa points out that to get this benefit, you would need to drink caffeine in large quantitiesone study estimated the amount at four cups a dayand that would affect your health in other ways, including decreased sleep, increased anxiety, and dehydration. Plus, any boost would be short-lived as your body began to tolerate the caffeine, Dr. Sowa says. No doctor I know would ever recommend this as a way to lose weight, she adds.
On to the second ingredient in this magical brew, the sunshiny citrus fruit, lemon. You may have heard that drinking lemon water can help you lose weight, but the emphasis here should be on the second word in that phrase, not the first. There's nothing magic about lemonit's about staying hydrated by drinking water, and the lemon just adds flavor, says Dr. Sowa. There are some complex biochemical processes behind it, but the most basic element is that drinking water keeps you full. We get these hunger signals to our brain that are often really thirst signals, but your body knows that if it tells you to eat something, in the process of eating, you'll generally consume water. By just staying hydrated, you can generally quell some of those signals.
And then, of course, there is this simple fact: You may read about lemon water being beneficial for those trying to lose weight, but often this is simply because the person is swapping out sugar-sweetened beverages for the lemon water, Walsh adds.
Hey, if you happen to like the taste of lemon in black coffee, go ahead. In the name of science and journalism, I tried it and found the flavor surprisingly okaybracing, but not as bitter as expected, though I have no plans to replace my daily oat-milk latte. If you do replace a very caloric morning drinksay, a Venti Pumpkin Spice Lattewith unsweetened black coffee with lemon, then yes, there might be some weight-loss benefit. But rather than take the joy out of your morning ritual by forcing yourself to drink something you don't like, take this advice from Dr. Sowa: Simply drink a tall glass of water as soon as you wake up, to make sure you're hydrated, and then enjoy your usual, lemon-free cup of coffee. Please remember that any health or weight loss hack that sounds too fast, too easy, or too good to be true generally is, she says.

Read More..Why Exercise Is More Important Than Weight Loss for a Longer Life – The New York Times
In other studies from Dr. Gaessers lab, though, overweight and obese people with significant health problems, including high blood pressure, poor cholesterol profiles or insulin resistance, a marker for Type 2 diabetes, showed considerable improvements in those conditions after they started exercising, whether they dropped any weight or not. Seeing these results, Dr. Gaesser began to wonder if fitness might enable overweight people to enjoy sound metabolic health, whatever their body mass numbers, and potentially live just as long as thinner people or even longer, if the slender people happened to be out of shape.
So, for the new study, which was published this month in iScience, he and his colleague Siddhartha Angadi, a professor of education and kinesiology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, began scouring research databases for past studies related to dieting, exercise, fitness, metabolic health and longevity. They were especially interested in meta-analyses, which pool and analyze data from multiple past studies, allowing researchers to look at results from far more people than in most individual studies of weight loss or exercise, which tend to be small-scale.
They wound up with more than 200 relevant meta-analyses and individual studies. Then they set out to see what all of this research, involving tens of thousands of men and women, most of them obese, indicated about the relative benefits of losing weight or getting fit for improving metabolisms and longevity. In effect, they asked whether someone who is heavy gets more health bang from losing weight or getting up and moving.
The contest, they found, was not close. Compared head-to-head, the magnitude of benefit was far greater from improving fitness than from losing weight, Dr. Gaesser said.
As a whole, the studies they cite show that sedentary, obese men and women who begin to exercise and improve their fitness can lower their risk of premature death by as much as 30 percent or more, even if their weight does not budge. This improvement generally puts them at lower risk of early death than people who are considered to be of normal weight but out of shape, Dr. Gaesser said.

Incline: You'll want to be sure you're getting a treadmill that can be angled at up to at least a 10 percent incline to properly target your muscles. Some can even go up to 40 percent.
Shock-absorption: A good treadmill will be easy on your joints, meaning you should stick with and have a cushioned running bed. Track cushioning can reportedly reduce impact by up to 40 percent, which encourages stamina and lessens potential injuries.
Stability: When looking for a treadmill, make sure to find one that stays in place and doesnt rock back and forth while youre using it. The best way to determine this is from the first-hand perspective of reviewers.
