NxGEN sires excel in health, wellness and fitness – Hoard’s Dairyman
The information below has been supplied by dairy marketers and other industry organizations. It has not been edited, verified or endorsed by Hoards Dairyman. Select Sires offers early access to the industrys most elite genetics through the NxGEN program. These sires hail from the best pedigrees and boast powerful health, wellness and fitness traits to create the next generation of profitable cattle. Following the December sire summaries, the breeds No. 1 available Net Merit sire, 7HO15821 FROST BITE (+1,191 NM$), joined the NxGEN lineup. The most recent portfolio includes 11 sires that average +2930 GTPI, +982 NM$, +995 Cheese Merit (CM$) and +991 Herd Health Profit Dollars (HHP$).
As dairies double-down on genetics, they are more critical of the females selected to produce replacements. This strategy, combined with an intense focus on sire selection, is expected to move the dial on genetic advancement, said Lyle Kruse, vice president of U.S. market development at Select Sires Inc. A more aggressive approach to sire selection will deliver returns on your investment and this lineup of NxGEN sires provides dairies with the most competitive genetic advantage.
New addition FROST BITE (+3013 GTPI) offers a unique pedigree: 7HO15097 GRANADA x 7HO14454 LIONEL x 7HO12897 SAMURI. His NM$ leadership combines with phenomenal health and wellness (+1,090 HHP$, +1,221 Dairy Wellness Profit Index, +133 Wellness Trait Index) plus outstanding production (+1,531 Milk, +164 Combined Fat and Protein) and A2A2 Beta-Casein.
Overall, the current lineup equips herds with the genetic power to combat the dairy industrys most common ailments and culling risks. Seven of the sires are more than +1,000 on Select Sires new HHP$ index. HHP$ places strong emphasis on health traits, particularly mastitis resistance. When compared to TPI and NM$, mastitis resistance and Somatic Cell Score (SCS) PTAs represent only 5 percent of the formula whereas these traits receive a relative emphasis of 19 percent in Select Sires HHP$ formula. Sires 7HO15583 KASHTON (+1,103), FROST BITE (+1,090), 7HO15167 GAMEDAY (+1,082) and 250HO15662 RIX (+1,055) rank as the top four sires for this innovative index.
In addition to HHP$, Select Sires also uses the green Mastitis ResistantPRO designation to identify sires that possess traits necessary to combat costly mastitis cases. Eight of the NxGEN sires qualify for the Mastitis ResistantPRO designation, including KASHTON, GAMEDAY, RIX and 14HO15582 MASHAK.
All NxGEN sires are available in Select Sires high-quality gender SELECTED SexedULTRA semen to create your next generation of healthy and profitable herd replacements.
To experience next level genetic gains, join Select Sires NxGEN program and add these sires to your lineup. For more information about NxGEN, or to apply for membership, visit http://www.selectsires.com/NxGEN.

Withings ScanWatch Review: An Elegant Health and Fitness-Tracking Wearable – WIRED
I have tested countless smartwatches and fitness trackers, and many of them impressed me at first blush. But few claimed a spot on my wrist after the review was done. All eventually lay discarded on the nightstand after I forgot to charge them. Most smartwatches tout features I have little use for, and fitness trackers often look incongruous outside the gym.
The Withings ScanWatch is different. This hybrid smartwatch has a very particular set of skills: It passes easily for an analog watch; it tracks my activity, workouts, and sleep; it keeps an unblinking eye on my health; and it offers basic notifications from my phone. It can also go a whole month between charges.
Understated Elegance
The sapphire glass and stainless steel construction of the timepiece make for a sophisticated pairing that conveys quality. The Withings ScanWatch looks like a traditional watch, with chrome-covered hour and minute hands. The circular face has two smaller dials inside. The bottom dial has a single red analog hand that shows your progress toward your fitness goals for the day, which is measured as a percentage between zero and 100. The top dial isn't actually a dial at all. Press the rotating crown on the side of the ScanWatch and the minute and hour hands sweep aside as a tiny passive matrix OLED display comes to life to show you the digital time and date. Give the crown a spin to see different bits of data appear on that tiny screen: your heart rate, step count, distance covered, and floors climbed.
Switching from an Apple Watch, I found the 42-mm Withings ScanWatch heavy at first. It has chunky lugs (the 38-mm model has a much daintier design), but it is a comfortable timepiece to wear, with a generous black fluoroelastomer wristband that has proven durable and less apt to pick up lint than the silicone bands Ive worn before. The ScanWatch looks and feels precise. The classic design blends in with any setting or outfit, so I rarely feel the need to take it off when I dress up or down.
Distilled and Accessible
Stripped of superfluous smartwatch features, the Withings ScanWatch focuses firmly on fitness and health. Theres no NFC for mobile payments, no microphone or speaker for calls or voice assistants, and no support for music playback. You can turn on incoming notifications from your phone, but I recommend setting them to calls only, as the display is too small for other notifications. By the time a ticker-tape text message unfurls, you could have easily slipped the phone from your pocket, read the notification, and put it away again.
Its rare for me to use a device for nine months before reviewing it, but the American release of the Withings ScanWatch was delayed while the manufacturer sought clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its ability to detect atrial fibrillation through the built-in electrocardiogram sensor, and to measure blood oxygen levels with the SpO2 sensor. Both the Apple Watch 7 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 offer similar functionality, but only the Withings ScanWatch has FDA clearance on the blood oxygen monitoring.

Fitness Facts: What to do for a cold or the flu – GCU Today
By Connie ColbertGCU Director of Health Services
So you are sick with a cold or the flu. Now what?
Here are some self-care tips to manage your symptoms and put you on the road to recovery.
Connie Colbert
Flu symptoms can make you feel terrible. But if you are otherwise healthy, younger than age 65 and not pregnant, you generally can take care of yourself at home rather than going to your doctor.
Try these remedies:
To avoid infecting other people, stay home from work, school and other public places for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medications. Most people feel better within a week of becoming infected with the flu virus. However, coughing may last for another one or two weeks.
Also, know when to call the doctor!
Call 911 or seek emergency help for trouble breathing or increased shortness of breath, confusion, sudden dizziness, stiff neck chest pain, seizure, extreme fussiness in a baby or trouble waking a baby.
Dont ask for antibiotics. They work only against infections caused by bacteria. The flu is aviral infection.

Manchester United handed fitness boost as Cavani, Varane and Lingard return to training – The Athletic
Manchester United trio Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane and Jesse Lingard have all returned to training ahead of the clubs Champions League match against Young Boys although the trio are not expected to feature on Wednesday night.
United currently sit first in Champions League Group F, with their win over Villarreal last time out booking their place in the knockout stages and making sure of top spot.
Speaking on Tuesday, interim manager Ralf Rangnick said: They (Cavani and Varane) cannot play tomorrow but they were part of training today. Edi even yesterday, Rapha the first time.
I expect them both in full training next week. They are both top players. It is also about sustainability. It would be great to have them as soon as possible, but obviously for the rest of season.
Rangnick was not drawn on Lingards availability, but added: Everybody has the chance to perform and present themselves. I am happy to give game time to quite a few of them tomorrow.
It is the perfect opportunity to get to know the players.
Anthony Martial is also out of action as he recovers from a knee injury which he suffered in training on Saturday.
We need to make sure he reduces pain in next few days and hopefully have him back training next week, Rangnick added.

Peloton Adds Boxing to Its Library of Fitness Classes – The Manual
Peloton
To Peloton instructor Rad Lopez, boxing was always a celebration. The 30-year-old New Yorker remembers big family gatherings for the fights when he was a child in family gatherings among aunts and uncles, with food and drinks. But unlike the rest of his relatives, he was captivated with the fights themselves. Its a true test of composure. Its grit and grace, Lopez tells The Manual. Id be the only one watching the full card, from the first fight to the last. When Peloton hired him in June officially as a strength trainer, there was also an unannounced project hed be joining: With fellow instructors Kendall Toole and Selena Samuela, Lopez would develop Pelotons first boxing module, and on Tuesday, December 7, that module went live.
I feel like boxing is the culmination of so many of our disciplines, Lopez says of the sports place in the Peloton pantheon of fitness. All those hills and leaderboards youve topped on the bike? They translate to transferring power from the ground into your punches. The fluidity youve found from yoga? Its grace in movement as you bob and weave. And that stamina from the treadmill and the muscle from strength training? Its brute force through your knuckles and the endurance to deliver it round after round. Youre using all the modalities to be really good at boxing, he says.
Pelotons boxing module is designed as a two-week course comprised of eight 20-minute classes. It requires zero gear (its entirely shadowboxing, hitting the air rather than a heavy bag), and its appropriate for those with experience and those without. Each session is sequential, building on the last, literally from the ground up, from footwork to punches, combos, and beyond. We teach the basics and foundation of what boxing is from the first step to the very last step, he says.
Lopez is still a passionate fan of the sport, and while he gave up competing in amateur bouts, he can still rattle off a host of names and their virtues, from the jab of Oscar De La Hoya to the defense of Floyd Mayweather and the pure guts of Felix Trinidad. But hes as equally ready to espouse the sports unseen virtues that can be practiced even without setting foot in a ring. Boxing is the physical expression of fighting through things, he says, whether that might mean a tough week at work or a conflict with a supervisor. The beauty of it, he adds, is that you can make it what you want it to be.
Even if youve never thrown a punch (or, for that matter, ridden a stationary bike or run a mile on a treadmill), the progressive Peloton program can get you reaping the benefits of a boxers regimen without getting punched in the face. Aside from how fun it is, Lopez says, the benefits of boxing classes are a stronger body and mind, as well as a low impact form of active recovery. Youre also starting a pursuit that will never quite be perfected.
Boxing is an ever-growing sport, and you can always get better, he says. And that includes himself: I can still sharpen up my jab.

Growth hormone injections: Uses and side effects
Hormones play a part in nearly every major body function, including growth. If the body does not produce enough, a person may need to have growth hormone injections.
Several glands in the body produce hormones, but health experts consider the pituitary to be the master control gland. Not only does it control other glands, but it also makes the hormone that triggers growth.
The pituitary gland is in the brain below the hypothalamus. It secretes hormones in response to chemical messages from the hypothalamus.
The human growth hormone (HGH) helps to influence height, as well as build bones and muscles in the body. It is crucial for processes involved in normal human growth and development.
Genetic factors can lead to a lack of growth hormone in children. Damage to the pituitary gland is a common cause of a deficiency in adults.
In this article, we look at the reasons to use HGH, the function of growth hormones, and possible side effects.
HGH is essential to growth, especially in children, but it is also involved in many other processes in the body, including bone density, muscle mass, and mood.
Different hormones control various body functions and processes, including growth and development, metabolism, sexual function and reproduction, and mood.
It helps process protein and increases fat breakdown to help provide the energy needed for tissue growth.
Growth hormone levels can change through the day, and physical activity plays a part.
Exercise and similar activities can cause the levels to rise naturally. Sleep, stress, and low blood sugar levels also increase growth hormone levels.
Even small changes in HGH levels affect the body.
Too little or too much growth hormone can cause significant growth problems. Too little HGH is one of the main causes of short stature and conditions such as dwarfism.
Some people use HGH because they believe it will build muscle, improve performance, or slow aging. However, the existing evidence does not support the use of HGH for these purposes.
Children with low levels of lack of growth hormone may or may not be smaller at birth. Growth problems may appear in time, for example, if they are smaller than their classmates and growing less than 2 inches a year.
Some children are unable to produce growth hormone when they are born and continue to have low levels throughout their life.
Symptoms of growth hormone deficiency in children are:
In some children, a lack of growth hormone is part of a genetic condition, but sometimes the cause of the deficiency is unknown.
In adults, a lack of growth hormone is often due to damage to the pituitary gland, which may be permanent. The damage could have occurred in childhood or adulthood.
Other causes include:
Problems in the pituitary with producing growth hormone are commonly due to a pituitary tumor.
The pituitary can be damaged by the tumor itself or by treatment such as surgery and radiotherapy.
In adults, a lack of HGH can cause a number of different problems including:
Growth hormone deficiency can also be a combination of one or more hormone deficiencies.
Some medical conditions may also benefit HGH treatment.
These include:
The most common treatment in both adults and children is growth hormone therapy using lab-developed HGH injections.
Doses occur several times per week or on a daily basis depending on how severe the deficiency is.Manufacturers designed the growth hormone to mimic the behavior of natural growth hormone in the body. It will be prescribed by a doctor.
HGH treatments can be self-administered or given by a doctor. Treatments are often given for several years. Patients will see their doctor every month or so to check their condition.
Blood tests will be carried out to see if extra growth hormone is needed and if treatments should be increased, decreased, or stopped. Cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and bone density will also be checked to see if they are healthy.
Taking growth hormone can affect the bodys response to insulin, which controls blood sugar levels. Growth hormone deficiency can also lead to high cholesterol and brittle bones if it is not treated.
Specific treatment for growth hormone deficiency depends on the person.
Doctors base this treatment on certain factors, such as:
The earlier the lack of growth hormone is treated in children, the better chance they have to grow to a near normal adult height.
Children can gain as many as 4 inches or more over the first 3 years of treatment. Another 3 inches or more can grow during the next 2 years.
Many adults have to take HGH treatment for the remainder of their life.
Anyone taking HGH will undergo regular monitoring to assess the safety and effectiveness of the hormone.
The goal of growth hormone treatments in adults and children is to restore energy, metabolism, and enhance body development or shape. It can help to reduce total body fat, especially around the belly.
HGH injections can also help to improve strength and exercise tolerance and reduce the risk of heart disease in those who lack growth hormone.
Many people experience an increase in overall quality of life.
Most people tolerate HGH injection treatments well with few problems.
However, possible side effects include:
Those who experience these symptoms or other problems should talk to their doctor. They can change the dose if necessary to help remedy the symptoms.
HGH injections are not recommended for people who have:
HGH can affect insulin usage in the body, so people with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels carefully.
Other treatments may be required depending on the cause of the HGH deficiency.
Surgery or radiation may be necessary to treat a tumor in the pituitary. Pituitary hormones may also have to be taken to correct a gland that is not working properly.
If the levels of HGH are too high in adults, they may experience:
Long-term use of HGH injections can cause a condition called acromegaly.
Adults cannot grow taller by using the synthetic growth hormone. High doses will thicken the persons bones instead of lengthening them.
People with acromegaly will experience an overgrowth of bones, particularly in the hands, feet, and face.
The skin area can also be affected and may turn thick, coarse, and hairy. The excess HGH levels can also lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.
HGH injections have also become popular for nonmedical usage. Bodybuildersgro and athletes sometimes use them in an effort to get larger muscles, more energy, and increased stamina.
They are considered performance-enhancing drugs and are banned in professional sports.
HGH injections are also advertised as an anti-aging or weight loss treatment.
Many people aim to help increase their energy as well as fight the decrease in muscle and bone mass that happens with aging.
The Endocrine Society do not recommend HGH injections for adults or children unless they have a growth hormone deficiency.
Not enough evidence is available to prove that HGH injections can slow down the aging process, and studies show it does not improve athletic performance. Adverse effects often occur, especially fluid retention.
Using them for any nonmedical reason is illegal in the United States.
HGH injections are designed for adults or children who have a lack of growth hormone and should only be prescribed by a doctor.
Children and adults with low levels of growth hormone should ensure they have plenty of sleep, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and that they follow medical advice.

Ever notice how the last place we tend to lose fat is in the belly? Abdominal fat oftentimes seems impossible to lose and chances are it's because it's visceral fat"a type of body fat that's stored within the abdominal cavity between your vital organs: liver, intestines, pancreas, etc," says Jillian Michaelscreator of The Fitness App by Jillian Michaels. While it can be challenging to lose, there are ways to help reverse visceral fat and get rid of the stubborn excess weight. Eat This, Not That! Health talked to Michaels, a personal trainer, nutritionist, life coach and former Biggest Loser fitness instructor, who explained everything to know about visceral fat. In order to know how much visceral fat to lose, you should know how much you have first. Michaels explains how to measure. "Outside of an MRI or CT scan the best way to know if you have visceral fat is the waist to hip ratio calculation. You simply
In women, a waist circumference of 35 inches or larger is generally considered a sign of excess visceral fat. In men, it's 40."
Visceral fat can be difficult to lose. Michaels says, "There are several reasons why visceral fat is difficult to lose, but they all tie back to hormone imbalances. Visceral fat gets stored like all fat because we are eating too much and moving too little. However, the body first aims to store the fat subcutaneously (just under the skin). When we take on too much excess body fat it then gets stored viscerally. The habits that created this excess fat in the first place have hormonal consequences that then beget a bit of a catch 22.
For example, visceral fat is linked to insulin resistance from too much sugar and not enough fitness, elevated cortisol levels from too much stress, and the secretion of excess inflammatory proteins called cytokines. When it comes to metabolism (the rate we burn calories, when, how and where we store fat) are directly connected to our hormone balance. Once insulin resistance begins and cortisol levels surge it makes it that much harder to get our metabolism out of fat storage mode and into fat burning mode. Plus, the habits/lifestyle that got us into this position in the first place are often the hardest to break. From desk jobs and sugar addiction to long work days and age-related hormonal shifts it can seem like an uphill battle."

You can absolutely lose visceral fat with diet and lifestyle changes. Michaels says, "there is a lot we can do. Let's sensitize your body to insulin again by cutting out processed carbs and refined sugars, so nothing white. No white flour and no white sugar. So avoid eating processed salty or sweet snacks. Choose whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes instead."

Michaels states, "Drink your water and keep sodium intake at bay. Try to avoid over 2000mg a day unless you sweat a ton and are very athletic and generally people with excess visceral fat aren't engaging in intense fitness training. Studies have linked excess sodium intake with increased insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and glucocorticoid production. An easy way to do this is to choose reduced sodium products, up your water intake, and don't salt your food."

Michaels stresses how important it is to stay active. "Start moving your body. Exercise is the best way to get the body sensitized to insulin and reverse type two diabetes. If you have the ability, techniques like HIIT training and Strength training are the most effective for this. The Fitness App has many programs for this including HIIT workouts for beginners so you can be effective and safe."

Michaels says, "Get your 8 hours of shuteye. Lack of sleep increases our hunger hormones and dampens our satiety hormones making us feel the need to eat more. In addition, it inhibits our HGH production, which is a key hormone for muscle maintenance and fat metabolism. Lack of sleep is also associated with higher cortisol levels which is a hormone notorious for belly fat storage. So make sure to shut off the screens and get 7 to 8 hours of shut eye every night."

Taking a break from life's daily stresses isn't just good for us mentally, but physically as well. Michaels reveals: "Take your vacations, manage your stress levels, try meditating anything that helps you manage stress. Cortisol is our fight or flight hormone and when we are constantly stressed it's constantly surging so work to find your chill!"
Michaels says, "Up your vitamin C intake! Early studies have shown that vitamin C can help reduce our cortisol secretion. So consider a supplement or just eat your citrus!"

"Last, we want to do what is going to help us reduce body fat overall and that is eating less calories and moving more often," Michaels explains. "Fat is stored energy and the calories in our food are units of energy. No matter how "healthy" a food is you can still eat too much of it. Take an organic avocado for example it's loaded with vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats with likely zero chemical residue from pesticides, fungicides, herbicides etc. But it's very high in calories. If you eat too many calories than your body is burning in a day you will store that energy in your fat cells. So be mindful of your overall calorie intake. Cut the booze. Booze dampens fat metabolism by up to 73%. And as I mentioned repeatedly EXERCISE it burns calories and helps to bring our hormones back into balance." ABSTRACT
A chance encounter in 1975 with David Crews in Harvard Square led to 3 years of research in his lab, investigating the role of testosterone (T) in male sexual behavior of the lizard, Anolis carolinensis. In 1988 when I began my practice as a urologist and specialist in mens health, my research experience with lizards led me to offer testosterone therapy (TTh) to men suffering with symptoms of testosterone deficiency, despite the universal belief that TTh caused prostate cancer (PCa). My investigation of this topic over 30+ years has led to revolutionary changes in the diagnosis and treatment of men with testosterone deficiency and our understanding of the biology of testosterone and PCa. Today, it is routine for men successfully treated for PCa to receive TTh, a remarkable fact given that standard treatment for men with advanced PCa has been androgen deprivation for the last 80 years. Our research showed low T was not protective for PCa; TTh did not appear to worsen PCa for various cancer stages; and provided the theoretical framework for understanding why androgen deprivation shrinks PCa tumors, yet TTh appears to not cause PCa growth under most conditions. This is based on the Saturation Model, which recognizes there is a finite ability of androgens to stimulate PCa growth, which becomes maximal at low T concentrations. David Crews was an outstanding mentor-the lessons I learned from him inspired a lifetime of work, which in turn led to improved quality of life for millions of men.
