8 Fitness Tips From Experts In 2024 Forbes Health – Forbes
Looking back on yet another year of navigating life through a pandemic, you might feel as though fitness remained on the back burner or that you generally didnt get to move as much as you had hoped. But thats okaywith a new year comes a new chance to hit the reset button and refresh both your wellness goals and how you think about them.
Here are eight pieces of expert advice on fitness from our Forbes Health Advisory Board members to help inspire you to get moving in 2024.
Exercise is of particular importance as we age, says Robert Lahita, the director of the Institute for Autoimmune and Rheumatic Disease at St. Josephs Health in Paterson, New Jersey. Remember: It doesnt mean running marathons or Spartan races. It needs to be a daily effort to work the body in favor of the biological soulto let go, relax the brain, stress the body in a good way and luxuriate in the flow of hormones, endorphins and cytokines.
Many New Years resolutions revolve around being more active, and having the right support for that activity can help prevent injuries and keep you on track for your goals, says Mehgan Susek, a podiatrist and wound care specialist in Pennsylvania. Make sure to use shoe gear thats designed for the sport or fitness activity you choose to pursue.
Check your current shoe gear and make sure to replace shoes or inserts when they show signs of wear or have surpassed the recommended number of hours/miles of use, as shoe gear can wear out and lead to problems, she adds. And dont ignore foot or ankle painsee your health care provider for any aches or injuries to help avoid further complications.
Its so easy to come up with reasons not to work out on any given day, but try not to talk yourself out of it, suggests Rachel Tavel, a doctor of physical therapy and certified strength and conditioning specialist in New York City. If you need motivation, take a moment to reflect on how you feel physically and mentally after your next workout. Do a before and after assessment. Capture it in writing. Then, use it as your motivation the next time youre wavering.
Its okay to not feel like exercising, but sometimes, thats the only time in the day you have, she adds. So go. Do it for the version of you waiting on the other side of the workout.

As we start the new year, try focusing on short-term goals of how you want to feel rather than how you want to look, advises Jaspal Singh, M.D., a triple-board certified physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, sports medicine and pain medicine in New York City. When we focus on only the outward benefits of exercise rather than the health benefits, these goals fall through.
Physical activity that increases your heart rate improves blood flow, and a well-oxygenated brain is a healthy brain, says Phillip Stieg, M.D., a board-certified neurosurgeon with expertise in cerebrovascular disorders, brain tumors and skull base surgery. Regular exercise can also help maintain your brains volumeit slows down the shrinkage thats a natural part of aging and increases the size of the hippocampus, which is involved in verbal memory, learning and emotions.
Exercise has been shown to lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisolan excess of which speeds up the aging process, he adds. Aim for 30 minutes of low-impact activity on most days, with a moderate intensity that gets your heart rate up to 120 beats a minute, adding in stretching and balance routines to stay flexible and steady on your feet.
I talk to patients all day about the importance of exercise, and the most common excuse I get is, I dont have time or, Im too busy, notes Micah Eimer, M.D., an experienced general cardiologist in Illinois. I pose the following question: What if Steve from accounting randomly wanted to meet with you next Wednesday for 45 minutes? Most patients say they would take the meeting. I then point out that they would make time for someone else, but cant find time for themselves to exercise. Be more judicious with your timemake an appointment with yourself in the same way youd accept an appointment with Steve.
I just read this new, fascinating study on how our genes affect our fitness outcomes, and I think that connection can help us all realize that unique gene expression makes us one of a kind, so we shouldnt get hung up on comparing ourselves to others, says Sabrena Jo, the senior director of science and research at the American Council on Exercise (ACE). Regular exercise improves health and fitness, and we dont have complete control over how our bodies will respond. These findings open us up to enjoying movement more while focusing less on the outcomes.
Finding ways to incorporate physical activity into your lifestyle, whether its in the form of structured exercise or spending less time sitting, should be a function of how well it suits your values and preferences and less about appearance or performance outcomes, she adds. Improved health will result from consistent participation in physical activity, regardless of your genetics.

Physical Fitness Linked to All Gait Parameters for Women with Fibromyalgia – MD Magazine
A new study found maintaining good levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, physical fitness, and appropriate weight balance is linked to improved gait parameters in women with fibromyalgia.1
Our results support that individual associations of fat percentage and gait parameters observed in the literature might be mainly moderated by individuals MVPA and/or physical fitness levels, wrote investigators, led by Sergio Llorente-Romero, from the GALENO Research Group at the University of Cdiz in Spain.
Assessing gait parameters can help monitor patients' general health and functional status to ensure they receive timely interventions.2 Poor gait parameters, such as slow walking, are indicators of a decline of physical function in elderly populations and may predict the need for falls, disability, hospitalization, and mortality.1
Patients with fibromyalgia face a lot of unpleasant symptoms and might be afraid of exerting themselves with physical activity. This promotes greater sedentary behaviors for patients with fibromyalgia and comparable physical fitness levels to those of elderly populations.
Investigators conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the individual and independent associations of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, sedentary time, fat percentage, and physical fitness with gait parameters in 84 women with fibromyalgia. They leveraged participants from the al-ndalus project; here, participants from Andalusia in southern Spain who had fibromyalgia associations were contacted through informative meetings, flyers, e-mail, and the local online newspaper. Patients were included in the study if they were previously diagnosed with fibromyalgia by a rheumatologist, a woman, and 65 years old.
Participants self-reported their age, marital status, educational status, and occupation. They were provided an accelerometer device and instructed on how to use it and how to fill out a sleep diary. Other measures included the symptom severity scale to measure the severity of fatigue, waking up unrefreshed, cognitive symptoms, headaches, pain or cramps in the lower abdomen, and depression.
Participants completed the Mini-Mental State Examination questionnaire to rule out people with dementia.
The team assessed moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and sedentary time with accelerometry, fat percentage with bioimpedance analysis, and physical fitness with field-based fitness tests. Additionally, gait, categorized in velocity, cadence, step length, step cycle duration, unipedal stance phase, and bipedal stance phase was assessed with a 6-minute walk test.
Physical activity was measured by wearing a triaxial accelerometer on an elastic belt placed on the waist for 9 consecutive days; data from the first and last day, as well as sleeping time, was excluded. Fat percentage and weight (kg) were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis; participants were not allowed to shower, perform intense physical activity, or drink in the 2 hours before the measurement and could only wear underwearno metal objects. Height was measured without shoes.
Participants completed different physical activity tests to assess lower-body flexibility, upper-body flexibility, lower-body strength, agility, and dynamic balance. Like gait, cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed with a 6-minute walk.
The team analyzed individual relationships by partial correlations and independent relationships by linear regressions, adjusted by age and height.
Investigators found moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, sedentary time, fat percentage, and physical fitness were linked to most gait parameters (P .05). Physical fitness was linked to all gait parameters (P .002), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was correlated with velocity and step length (P = .004), and fat percentage was linked to bipedal stance phase (P = .049). Fat percentage was negatively associated with velocity.
When looking at individual associations, most physical fitness components were positively associated with velocity, cadence, step length, and unipedal stance phase (P < .05) but not for upper-body flexibility with velocity and cadence, and lower- and upper-body flexibility and upper-body strength with unipedal stance phase (P > .05). Global physical fitness was also positively associated with velocity, cadence, step length, and unipedal stance phase (P < .01) and negatively associated with step cycle duration and bipedal stance phase (P < .01). Cardiorespiratory fitness showed the strongest association, followed by dynamic agility.
Although we cannot assume the causality of the association due to the cross-sectional design of this study, it has been hypothesized that improving cardiorespiratory fitness might improve gait parameters through a restructuring in the central nervous system or by activating cortical areas involved in walking such as the prefrontal cortex, investigators wrote.
Investigators wrote the data was limited by the cross-sectional design and choosing the sample by convenience.
Overall, good levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, physical fitness, and adequate weight balance were linked to improved gait parameters in women with fibromyalgia.
The results seem to encourage women with fibromyalgia to exercise by focusing on improving physical fitness, which is usually accompanied by MVPA promotion and fat percentage reductions, investigators concluded. These relationships should be further studied through experimental research.

Saudi Arabia confirms a fitness influencer received an 11-year sentence over ‘terrorist offenses’ – Yahoo! Voices
JERUSALEM (AP) Saudi Arabia confirmed in a letter to the United Nations that a female fitness instruction who was popular online received an 11-year prison sentence but did not specify any of her alleged terrorism offenses.
Though the kingdom insisted the case had nothing to do with the instructor's online presence, human rights activists say the conviction levied against Manahel al-Otaibi shows the limits of expression in Saudi Arabia.
It also highlights another side of the kingdom, now run day-to-day by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who under his 88-year-old father King Salman has dramatically liberalized some aspects of women's lives in the country.
Her charges related solely to her choice of clothing and expression of her views online, including calling on social media for an end to Saudi Arabias male guardianship system, publishing videos of herself wearing indecent clothes and going to the shops without wearing an abaya, said Amnesty International and ALQST, a London-based group advocating for human rights in Saudi Arabia thats followed al-Otaibis case.
The human rights organization issued joint statements on Tuesday about al-Otaibi's prison sentence, first revealed in Saudi letter dated Jan. 25 and sent to the U.N.'s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In its letter, Saudi Arabias permanent mission to the U.N. in Geneva did not outline any of the evidence that convicted al-Otaibi while saying there had been unfounded and uncorroborated allegations and claims made about her case.
Al-Otaibi, who posted fitness videos on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, faced charges of defaming the kingdom at home and abroad, calling for rebellion against public order and societys traditions and customs, and challenging the judiciary and its justice, according to court documents earlier seen by The Associated Press.
Her posts included advocacy for liberal dress codes for women, LGBTQ+ rights and the abolition of Saudi Arabia male guardianship laws. She was also accused of appearing in indecent clothing and posting Arabic hashtags that include the phrase overthrow the government.
Al-Otaibi has been detained since November 2022. Her sister Fouz faced similar charges but fled Saudi Arabia, according to ALQST.
The kingdom's letter said the Saudi government "wishes to underscore the fact that the exercise and defense of rights is not a crime under Saudi law; however, justifying the actions of terrorists by describing them as exercising or defending rights is unacceptable and constitutes an attempt to legitimize terrorist crimes.
Since 2018, women have been allowed to drive and other restrictions have been lifted in the once-ultraconservative kingdom as it tries to rapidly diversify its oil-based economy. That came as Prince Mohammed solidified his power, partly by imprisoning members of the Saudi elite as his father retains formal control in the kingdom.
Several activists have been arrested for denouncing Saudi rules, or following dissidents who do so, on social media. This includes Salma al-Shehab, a former doctoral student at Leeds University who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence.

Time to Re-Impose Tougher Physical Fitness Standards for New Cops – ourtownny.com
Forget the new NYPD dress code banning shorts, turtlenecks and mismatched shoelaces for cops. How about the department instead re-institute physical fitness standards for cops?
The NYPDs updated style guide bans shorts on transit beats, white turtlenecks and tactical cargo shorts on patrol beats and mismatched, colored shoelaces other than black.
Instead of focusing on the sartorial style of cops, the NYPD should prioritize the issue of overweight police officers by mandating physical fitness requirements for new recruits. Those standards were lowered last year by then-NYPD training chief Juanita Holmes to encourage more women to join the force and to stave off a record wave of retirements.
The department scrapped its 1.5-mile mile run, which needed to be completed by men and women in 14 minutes and 21 seconds, and replaced the six-foot wall inside the police academy gym with a chain-link fence said to be easier to climb.
The only physical fitness criterion now required to become a cop is the Job Standard Test (JST), a multi-step course which must be completed in four minutes and 28 seconds.
The result is more out-of-shape cops coming out of the police academy.
I walked behind a pair of obese beat cops outside Bryant Park the other day. One male, the other female. No way either could catch a perp in a foot race, let alone run 1.5 miles.
The department cant retroactively require cops to lose weight; that would have to happen through collective bargaining between the City and police unions.
Just Do It.
If, as he says, Mayor Adams is serious about combatting crime by increasing the number of new police officers, he can use all the fit new cops he can get.
After initially threatening to cancel new police classes due to what was perceived at the time to be a looming $7 billion budget deficit, Adams fiscal picture has brightened in the ensuing months. He recently committed to adding two police academy classes to the upcoming fiscal year 2025 budget. [The NYC fiscal year ends on June 30.]
That means adding 600 new recruits to the cop rolls in 2024, raising the total tally of new NYPD recruits in 2024 to 2,400, according to the city. There are 1,200 recruits in the police academy from the July and October classes. They will hit city streets in January 2025 and April 2025, respectively. Major crime has been trending down the past two years, but it is still above pre-COVID crime rates.
I always say that public safety is the prerequisite to prosperity, Adams said when announcing the new police academy classes. By driving down crime, we have saved lives and laid the foundation for economic recovery, but we want to keep that going and we wont do anything to risk all our progress, he added.
Thats all good. But the NYPD should not apply lower physical fitness standards to new recruits than the department did to their predecessors.
Ken Frydman is CEO of Source Communications, a strategic and tactical communications firm in Manhattan.
