Rhapsody Fitness helps stroke survivor defy the odds and make an amazing recovery – WCBD News 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) Crossfit athlete Jeffrey Fisher makes great strides after suffering a severe stroke in September 2011 that left him partially paralyzed, unable to speak, read or write.

I dont think they thought he was going to live through the night, said his wife Alice Fisher. And then he moved his left fingers.

Jeffrey was diagnosed with Aphasia, a brain damaging disorder that affects a persons ability to express speech.

After physicians learned more of his diagnosis, the consensus was that Jeffrey would not be able to communicate or move the right-side of his body after the first few months after his stroke.

Ive worked with Aphasia for over 50 years. If that person doesnt recover in the first 6-months it doesnt come back. You have what you have, said Speech-Language Pathologist Dr. Grace Privette- Farren.

However, Jeffrey and his wife Alice refused to accept the prognosis, and began to research alternative means while accepting the long road of recovery.

Over a decade, the pair went through 20 physicians, therapists and coaches.

Slowly but surely, Jeffrey made progress over the years, regaining his ability to speak and move little by little.

In life you have a choice. You cant control what happens to you, but you can always respond accordingly, said Jeffrey. I was going to go at it all the way. There aint no way Im giving up.

In continuing his progress, Jeffrey enrolled in a CrossFit class at Rhapsody Fitness in Charleston at the suggestion of his physician, Dr. Maysa Hannawi.

My mindset as a coach with people who come into the gym with impairments isok, well lets get you fit no matter what youre working with, says Rhapsody Co-Founder and Head Coach Alan Shaw.

Rhapsody Fitness is headquartered in Downtown Charleston and is one of South Carolinas fastest growing gyms. Rhapsody specializes in premier fitness coaching with 49 classes offered at their gyms which are open 24/7.

After two years, both Jeffrey and Alice are pillars of the Rhapsody CrossFit community.

To be working out at CrossFit for anyone who is 71 is almost a miracle, says Privette-Farren. But for him its miraculous. I dont think medically, it can be explained.

Jeffrey spreads awareness of Aphasia by speaking and advocating for other stroke survivors, and writing a memoir which is due for publication in Fall 2021.

Everybody said that it could not be done. And I did it, Jeffrey said. Never, never, never give up. See Jeffreys story from startto be continued on Rhapsody TV.

I Tried a Supermodel’s 5-Minute Butt Workout, and My Glutes Were Working From Start to End – POPSUGAR

I've never met a celebrity workout I didn't immediately want to try, and it's especially tempting when the routine targets my glutes, takes five minutes, and doesn't require a single piece of equipment, like the butt workout supermodel Kelly Gale posted today. I've tried Gale's ab workouts in the past and they have definitely worked, so as soon as I saw this one hit my YouTube subscriptions, I grabbed my mat and got ready to try.

Gale describes this as a beginner workout because it's so quick and comprised of foundational, bodyweight moves. You do each exercise for about 30 seconds, and the exercises are:

Sure, this workout only lasts five minutes, but my glutes and quads were still trembling by the end, especially during the looong glute bridge section. One round is a great way to fire up and engage your glutes, and if you want an extra challenge, you could add a second or third round to really work your butt. We also have to give a quick shoutout to Gale's dog, Zoe, who decided to do the hip thrust section along with us. Lay out a mat or find some comfy ground to work out on, then check out the full workout (and dog cameo) above!

Fitness buff who started own business with 7,000 now brings in 5million a year – The Mirror

A fitness buff who self-started his own business with just 7,000 in the bank has now turned over an impressive 5million in sales.

Chris Billingham, 34, who lives in Milton Keynes with his partner and baby daughter, has seen his gym equipment company MuscleSquad go from strength to strength since launching in 2017.

Sales have largely been boosted by people working out from home during lockdown, as gyms remained shut for months at a time over the last year because of the coronavirus crisis.

Budding entrepreneur Chris says he always had an interest in fitness and before MuscleSquad, spent ten years working in the gym industry.

He was employed by several large retailers to help develop and create ranges of products, but left to start advising companies on how to build e-commerce businesses.

Do you have a small business that has flourished in lockdown? Let us know: mirror.money.saving@mirror.co.uk

It was here Chris started to learn more about selling online, and he created MuscleSquad to test and learn theory and strategy of digital sales.

The website initially started off as a hobby but soon saw sales rolling in, and Chris realised he had a serious business on his hands.

After launching MuscleSquad with his own funds - which included 4,000 for a first container of stock, the website for 1,000 and also a down-payment on a storage locker - he was also able to raise 300,000 through the government Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS).

EIS helps businesses grow by offering tax reliefs to individual investors who buy shares in your company.

He said: What started as a hobby, working with my passion for fitness, quickly accelerated into a full-time business off the back off lockdown.

I locked myself in a room and built the website, created the advertising campaigns, and figured out the marketing philosophy for the business.

When the first of the stock arrived, I added the products to the website and listed them all on eBay.

I still remember the feeling of receiving our first order. Since then, weve continued to push forward and reinvest our profits into bringing a wider range of products to suit our customers demands.

In its first year, MuscleSquad - which operates only online - made 180,000, rising to an eye-watering 5million in the last year.

It has also expanded from a one-man business to a team of 14 and two non-executive board members, with Chris only taking on his first employee in August 2020.

Chris even has a member of staff - a stock controller - out in Australia, after he relocated our there while working for the business.

He said: "Employing people in the early days felt like a massive leap and to be honest was pretty nerve racking.

"I remember saying to Darren, my first employee, I may have a job this month but not sure about the following month. Hardly the most motivating speech for a new starter!"

Chris claims not accepting pre-orders and only sell whats in his warehouse is also part of the reason behind his success.

This ensures customers are not kept waiting for their order, he says, and says "the logistical challenges Covid-19" helped reinforce this strategy.

In terms of the future, Chris hopes to create a MuscleSquad app so people can track their fitness progress and also wants to expand his service into Europe.

Prices for products start from 10 for two 1kg weights, going up to 200 for a 32.5kg adjustable dumbbell.

For larger pieces of equipment, youll look at pay 2,150.00 for a multi-function rack or 1,200 for a bench, barbell and weights package.

As well as selling equipment, MuscleSquad also has free workout plans that you can download online to help you train.

He said: Lockdown has really proved we dont need to all be in one place all of the time. Down the line we also plan to take our brand to Europe.

Were a young company, barely walking when lockdown hit, so its hard to know what normal looks like.

"Weve seen incredible sales growth but wed sooner go slower and maintain our customer rating.

Three Simple Truths That Will Make or Break Your Business and Fitness Goals – Entrepreneur

July4, 20216 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

The star quarterback is missing his throws. The hot point guard can't buy a bucket.

In sports, when a star player struggles, the casual fan will typically point to some large, macro issue. However, talk to a former athlete or listen to the coach during the interview, and you'll hear something much smaller (and surprising). Thats because the coach and former athlete understand that the micro determines the macro.

Perhaps the quarterback is missing throws because his communication is slightly off with his linemen and receivers. Maybe the star point guard is missing shots due to slightly off mechanics and struggling to read the space given to him.

This same scenario plays out in both business and fitness.

Typically, when someone is looking to grow their business or take charge of their health, they'll focus on the macro while neglecting the micro. This approach is backward. Succeeding in fitness and business starts with the micro. To achieve success in both arenas, here are three simple truths that you must keep in mind.

Related: The Science Behind Baby Steps: How to Tackle Goals Big and Small

The pursuit of success comes with a duality at the beginning. There's excitement and anticipation of achieving your goals. However, on the other end, something is lurking: the absence of visible results. In business, you're emailing, but no one is replying. You're calling people, but no one is answering. You're creating content, but no one is reading it. You're promoting your product and services, but no one is buying. In fitness, you're eating healthy and exercising, but the inches don't seem to be coming off.

With the initial excitement wearing off and no visible results to show, entrepreneurs will face the temptation to abandon the ship (i.e., their goals). However, as Jeff Olson states in The Slight Edge, "results are invisible at the beginning." Just because you have an absence of visible results doesn't mean there's a lack of invisible activity. Don't give in to the kryptonite of entrepreneurship and fitness: impatience and the need for immediacy.

It takes time for an ice cube to melt, and it will take time to build your business and body.

The ice cubes sitting on the kitchen table may look like nothing is happening (i.e., absence of visible results), but theyre melting, albeit slowly (i.e., invisible activity). Change can be frustrating because it can seem like nothing is happening despite taking the "right" actions. But all those tiny actions and victories accumulated daily are quietly stacking in the background to become something significant.

Keep calling, pitching, writing, and exercising because though you may not see anything right now, it doesn't mean nothing is happening.

The virus of complacency stops many entrepreneurs from getting what they truly want. When you're suffering from this virus, you're essentially given an anesthetic before hitting the operating room. Over time, you become immune and dull to what you're becoming. A telltale sign of you suffering from this virus is creating explanations and minimizing things that you once didn't tolerate.

Complacency is the silent killer to both your business and fitness goals.

"It's only a few pounds." "It's only one client." "It's only one workday."

Complacency destroys progress and growth along with making meaningful changes unlikely. When you're complacent, you're unlikely to adapt to the ever-changing environment. When you're not adapting and growing, you're moving in the opposite direction: becoming obsolete. Neither weight gain nor a decrease in business performance arriveovernight. Instead, they act as slow asphyxiation where you don't even realize its happening. Don't mistakenly think your current status quo will continue "as is." What got you here won't get you to the next level. Comfortability equates to losing your edge, getting replaced, and packing on the pounds.

Flipping the switch doesn't need to be complicated. Start with an honest self-assessment of yourself. Be brutally honest. Have you lowered your standards, values, and goals? Have you lowered them because of your obstacles, environment, wavering levels of inspiration, or some other crisis? Gaining awareness and giving yourself a reality check is necessary to create the urgency to change (or recommit to your actual business and fitness goals).

Related: 5 Ways to Fix Your Fitness and Undo Pandemic Pounds

Whether it's stocks or bitcoin, both require a commitment for the long haul. You're not just thinking about today, next week, or next monthyou're thinking about five, ten, and 20 years and beyond.

You're a chess grandmaster who is thinking 15 moves ahead.

Unfortunately, this is the opposite of how many entrepreneurs go about changing their bodies and business. Many weight loss and business programs promise to change your life, body, and business in 90 days. Will you get some results? Absolutely. Will you completely overhaul your life? Not likely.

Ninety days isn't enough time to fundamentally reshift your habits and identity. Anyone can follow a program for 90 days, but what's next? Often, it's nothing but an empty void that is primed for old habits to return. This is why you see people lose weight with these fitness challenges, only to regain all the weight back months later. This is why you see many have a great quarter only not to duplicate it the following quarters. Everything comes with a cost. When opting for short-term pleasures, you're often unknowingly signing up for long-term frustration.

As you go about your fitness and business goals, pause and assess if the way you're going about it is something that's sustainable well beyond 90 days. Instead of a 90-day program, think in terms of a 365-day program (or at least 300 days). After all, we're only human.

Just as a tiny crack in the dam can serve as the impetus to the damn bursting and flooding the area, one small crack in your infrastructure could serve as the impetus to you not getting what you want. Focus on the micro and leave no stone unturned, and before you know it, that dream business and body will morph into your new everyday reality.

Biden sparks more fears over mental fitness in awkward moment – ‘I’ll be in better shape’ – Express

Last week America was hit by a "colossal" ransomware attack, which affected about 200 businesses in the country. Security firm Huntress Labs said on Friday it believed the Russia-linked REvil ransomware gang was to blame for the attack. On Saturday, the US President was in Central Lake, Michigan and popped into the King Orchards farm store to buy some pies.

While checking out with the cashier, a journalist began asking him about the latest cyber attack.

Mr Biden didn't allow the reporter to finish the question, before replying that US Intelligence was not sure if the hack was ordered by Moscow.

"We're not sure it's the Russians," he said.

After a moment's pause, the President finally was able to give a coherent answer, saying: "I directed the intelligence community to give me a deep dive on what's happened.

"I'll know better tomorrow."

Last month, Mr Biden started his visit to the UK with an embarrassing gaffe, as he referred to the Royal Airforce as the "RFA" in a keynote speech.

Mr Biden was urged to take a "cognitive test" by a former White House doctor who is concerned about his behaviour.

The scene has led Republican member of the House of Representatives Ronny Jackson to demandMr Bidenreceive a test of his cognitive fitness.

Mr Jackson previously worked as Donald Trump' White House doctor.

The doctor is demanding that Mr Biden take the same cognitive test that was passed by Mr Trump when he was 75.

The test in question is called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to test for memory impairment, dementia, and other possible maladies.

Mr Jackson appeared on Fox News on Saturday evening and referring to Mr Biden said: "I think he's demonstrating every single day that there is something going on.

"You don't need to be a physician to look at this behaviour and see there's something concerning happening."

FEELING GREAT: Variety is the spice of life … and fitness – Hartlepool Mail

The common mistake people tend to make (which can lead to injury), is to constantly pound the same path night after night when walking or running.

Heres an example. Lets say youre in training for something like the Lyke Wake Walk or the Great North Run (its only two months away!), and you walk or jog on the same hard surfaces night after night, steadily increasing your distance each time. Do that and theres a good chance you will suffer from common injuries such as Achilles tendon problems or shin splints, even though you think youre doing your health some good by doing it. And by the way, you will be helping your heart and lungs, just not your joints or muscles.

Likewise, if you spend hour after hour on the saddle of your bicycle, and you havent prepared by doing the right lower back strengthening exercises, then you should expect to suffer back pain. Why? Because if your lower back isnt strong enough to support you in the seat as you climb a few hills from time to time (even leaning forwards as you to try make it easier to get up a steep bank), then it will be stressed too much and eventually youll pay the price with pain and/or stiffness.

Even swimmers need to vary their training, otherwise shoulder aches and pains are inevitable. Its not possible to get into a swimming pool for an hour every day and use the same arm motion to propel you through the water without getting some kind of shoulder problem eventually. The swimming is fine, just change the stroke you do from one day to the next.

My BIG tip is to always vary the type of exercise you do. As youve just noticed from the mention of how to avoid swimming injuries, its possible to change an activity within an activity and it will help you keep active and healthy. Perhaps you could spend a little more time and effort putting together a plan that will work multiple muscle groups, improve balance, increase core muscle control (around your back), still improve cardio-vascular fitness (heart and lungs) and just as importantly, give vital joints a break. All you have to do is go along to a local gym and pay a personal trainer to set a programme up for you.

For more tips and advice, get in touch for a FREE copy of my book The Healthy Habit. It is essential reading people aged 50+ in the North-East, and for anyone that would like to improve their own healthy habits. Please call 01429 866771.

The Secret 5-Minute Breathing Exercise People Over 50 Should Do | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

One of major benefits of regular exercise as you reach your 40s and 50s is enhanced cardiovascular healthbetter blood flow, a stronger heart, lower blood pressure, and healthier arteries with reduced risk of clotsand research is increasingly finding that there are alternative ways for making gains there beyond traditional exercise, such as walking, running, or lifting weights.

For instance, one new study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that hopping in the sauna or taking a hot bath can indeed bring about some similar heart-healthy benefits you'd see resulting from low to moderate intensity aerobic exercise. (Simply put: When your body gets hot, it increases blood flow and elevates your heart ratejust a couple of the things that happen to your body when you go out for a jog.) Another recent study, published inAnnals of Internal Medicine, found that people over 50 were able to lose weight while performing the ancient, meditative martial-arts practice known as tai chi.

Now, a new study from researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder, which was published in the Journal of American Heart Association, has found that there is a simple and lesser-known breathing workout that older people can do that will help them lower their blood pressure and strengthen their vascular health. Curious to know what it is? Read on for everything you need to know. And if you're not as keen on exercise as you'd like to be, don't miss The Secret Tricks for Making Exercise Less Miserable, Say Experts.

Originally developed in the 1980s for those who suffer from respiratory issues, High-Resistance Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST) requires you to inhale really hard on device that provides resistance. "Imagine sucking hard through a tube that sucks back," explain the authors from the CU Boulder, in the official release. The exercise is known to strengthen your breathing muscles ("inspiratory" muscles), as well as your diaphragm.

According to the researchers, IMST was usually prescribed to people to do for a half-hour a day "at low resistance." More recently, it's been used like HIITquicker, higher resistance repsfor "cardiovascular, cognitive, and sports performance improvements."

The new study sought to test higher-intensity IMST's effectiveness in "helping aging adults fend off cardiovascular disease." And for more workouts you should consider trying, don't miss The Walking Workouts That Will Help You Get Lean, Says Top Trainer.

The researchers assembled 36 healthy volunteers between the ages of 50 and 79 with healthy blood pressure numbers. Some of the volunteers performed just five minutes of the "high-resistance" IMST for six weeks, others did the same amount of IMST at a lower resistance for the same period of time, which served essentially as a placebo.

At the end of the study, those who did the more intense form of breathing exercise had a 9-point drop in their systolic blood pressure"a reduction which generally exceeds that achieved by walking 30 minutes a day five days a week," say the study authors. "That decline is also equal to the effects of some blood pressure-lowering drug regimens."

What's more, "even six weeks after they quit doing IMST, they maintained most of that improvement."

"We found not only is it more time-efficient than traditional exercise programs, the benefits may be longer lasting," said Daniel Craighead, Ph.D., an assistant research professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at CU Boulder. And if you love to walk, make sure you're aware of the Secret Cult Walking Shoe That Walkers Everywhere Are Obsessed With.

The study highlights that previous scientific research has found that postmenopausal womenunless they're taking estrogen supplementsdon't "reap as much benefit from aerobic exercise programs as men do when it comes to vascular endothelial function," which refers to the inner lining of your blood vessels. With IMST, they do. "If aerobic exercise won't improve this key measure of cardiovascular health for postmenopausal women, they need another lifestyle intervention that will," Craighead noted in the release. "This could be it."

The study notes that previously done research connects IMST to sports performance. "If you're running a marathon, your respiratory muscles get tired and begin to steal blood from your skeletal muscles," said Craighead. "The idea is that if you build up endurance of those respiratory muscles, that won't happen and your legs won't get as fatigued."

Craighead, a marathon runner himself, notes that he personally uses IMST in his own training regimen.

Now, it's worth noting that IMST isn't meant to be a replacement for traditional exercise at all. Rather, it's meant to be a companion exercisea supplemental activity that you can do to help respiratory system and cardiovascular system, become healthier overall, and bolster your defenses against heart disease. But how do you do it?

As Craighead notes, you can do it at home "in five minutes while you watch TV." Like the former Buddhist monk Andy Puddicombe did with his Headspace app, the researchers are developing an app at home that provides instruction.

Until then, you do need a device called an inspiratory muscle trainer that you put to your mouthwhile plugging your nosethat will provide resistance. One company that provides them is called Power Breathe. To use it, you do 30 "vigorous" breaths over the course of 5 minutes. For more exercise tips, see here for the Secret Exercise Tricks for Keeping Your Weight Down for Good.
