Wait, isn't this article about how Intuitive Eating helps you lose weight? It can be a common misconception to turn this popular eating program into a weight loss solution. However, Intuitive Eating works because weight loss isn't the main goal. Instead, the main goal is all about truly listening to your body's needs, dissociating emotions with food, and nourishing your body properly.
"Unfortunately, many influencers unsurprisingly have co-opted this non-diet approach into a tool to pursue weight loss. This is misinformation that goes completely against what intuitive eating is about," says Katherin Kimber, RD, Director of Nude Nutrition, and a certified Intuitive Eating counselor. "Intuitive Eating is not a weight-loss tool or diet. It is not intended for this use. Rather, it's a tool to improve health behaviors and to focus on the things you can control, letting weight settle in its natural and healthy place for you."
Intuitive Eating steps aside from the toxic dieting belief that losing weight is the solution for health, and instead, gives the proper tools for others to learn how to nourish their bodies well.

One of the most prominent ways Intuitive Eating teaches others how to listen to their body's hunger and fullness cues is by helping people break free of attaching emotions to their food.
"Intuitive Eating is an evidence-based approach designed to help people break out of a negative relationship with food," says Kimber. "Researchers have identified that intuitive eaters tend to be less preoccupied with food, have less disordered and emotional eating, have less stress, better body image and tend to have a lower BMI."
"Intuitive Eating is not meant to be a weight loss diet or lifestyle. Instead, it's a self-care framework that takes emotion, instinct, and rational thought into consideration when making food choices and caring for one's body," says Sarah Schlichter, MPH, RDN of Bucket List Tummy. "Some of the reasons for weight changes (in either direction) with intuitive eating are because people improve their relationship with food, leading to fewer binges, choose more filling and satisfying foods leading to less incessant snacking, and not going too long without eating, leading to better blood sugar levels, energy, and more mindful choices."
Schlichter specifically points out that your weight may change in either direction. Meaning you could lose some initial weight as you learn healthier eating habits, but you could also gain weight if your unhealthy eating habits involved massive food restriction.
"You learn to pay attention to hunger and fullness signals to guide your eating rather than allowing external triggers (a food advertisement, candy on the desk, stress) to influence eating," says Brenda Braslow, RD, MS with MyNetDiary. "You learn to eat when you are hungry, but not allow yourself to become ravenous and to stop eating when you are comfortably satisfied, not uncomfortably stuffed."
Braslow also points out that over time, this type of honesty around your hunger can even lead you to make healthier nutritional choices for your meals.
"When tuning into your body, you learn that eating healthy, wholesome foods helps you to feel better," says Braslow. "You also notice that poor food choices make you feel sluggish or that overeating may give you a stomach ache. Intuitive eating focuses on enjoying foods in a positive way to nourish your body rather than relying on a restrictive dieting approach."

Theresa Gentile, MS, RDN, owner of Full Plate Nutrition and media spokesperson for the New York State Dietetic Association, says that practicing to intuitively eat by properly listening to your body's hunger and fullness signals can actually help you build respect for your body over time.
"If you can accept, respect, and even love your body, you're more likely to ditch self-criticism which only leads to negative self-talk and destructive behaviors," says Gentile. "Instead, when you recognize your beauty from within and can appreciate your body for the machine that it is, you can focus on more healthful behaviors rather than drown in negative body image."

Intuitive Eating encourages people to focus on how their physical body feels in all circumstances. When are you really hungry to eat? Are you full and should you stop eating? What are the foods that actually make you physically feel your best long after you eat them?
This type of practice requires complete honesty from the eater, allowing that person to be fully honest with themselves. For example, what foods make you feel sluggish after? What are the foods that actually energize you?
"Prioritizing how your body feels, and deciding from there which foods to eat and in what portions, is a good way to go," says Rachel Paul PhD, RD from CollegeNutritionist.com. "Instead of thinking of adding healthy choices as 'restriction', think about new changes as creating a structure that you feel good aboutwith foods and meals you both like the taste of, and keep your body feeling its best."
However, while the practice of Intuitive Eating does encourage others to eat foods that feel good for their body, that hasn't stopped social media influencers from taking it a step further, promoting eating practices that may not be as healthy.
"I believe the book actually gets this right, but many Intuitive Eating promoters on social media tend to say things like 'if you have a craving you should always honor it'and that actually isn't always true," says Paul.
Paul points out that just because you have an urge to do something doesn't always mean you have to do it. She recommends to her clients to breathe through the craving and see if their bodies really want it first. Even turning back to those questions can help: Am I actually hungry for this? Why am I eating this food? Will this food make me feel energized or sluggish?
There is no concrete scientific evidence that shows dieting and food restriction actually work for weight loss long term. But that hasn't stopped many weight loss programs from promoting their productsand hasn't stopped customers from buying and believing in them. This type of restrictive dieting practice can lead to yo-yo dieting, causing chronic dieters to go from periods of serious restriction to overeating in order to compensate for the lack of calories. The best way to lose weight is to stop dieting at alleven doctors say so. That's why the practice of Intuitive Eating has been massively successful for many people. It asks people to have respect for their body's physical needs in regards to food and teaches how to respect proper hunger and fullness cues.
If you're one who constantly gave into yo-yo dieting and restrictive eating practices, the thought of intuitively eating may seem intimidating and difficult. The best thing you can do is talk to a registered dietitian who can walk you through the process of getting started.
"I usually suggest working with a registered dietitian to come up with a meal plan based on your needs focused on timing and portion sizes of meals and once you have gotten comfortable with that, transitioning over to intuitive eating to add or take away from what you would have had planned based on your body's redeveloped signals," says Ricci-Lee Hotz, MS, RDN at A Taste of Health and Expert at Testing.com.
All in all, Intuitive Eating could potentially help you to lose weight. But weight loss isn't the main point of this particular way of eating healthy. Instead, Intuitive Eating is all about making peace with food and truly being honest about your body's physical needs.

Growing up, I was an active person. I played many sports all the way through college, but when I graduated, I stopped. Thats when I noticed my weight going up, and I felt uncomfortable in my own skin.
Not only was I inactive, but I was also eating more. Whether I was sad or angry or stressed, eating made it easier to deal with these emotions. Over the years, I dealt with the stress of becoming a parent and losing my job while trying to support my family. The weight added up, and at my peak, I weighed 285 pounds.
I noticed that I would get out of breath while going up stairs, and I couldnt keep up with a growing toddler. The final straw, for me, came in December 2016. After a vacation, I felt sluggish, and my knees ached. The last time I had weighed myself, I was 260 pounds. When I saw 285 after vacation, I was shocked. Im only 5-foot-7, and being close to 300 pounds scared me. It was time for a change.

In January 2017, I started running. Unlike other aspects of my life, I could control my running. I set my pace and distance, and I could do it on my time. I also recognized it as a way people often lost weight.
The struggle was real at first. I was sore after every run, but I forced myself to get out there four to five days a week at my pace, without any apps and training plans. I just wanted to get out and move without being told when I had to stop or start.
After a few months, I wanted to increase my running skills, so I decided to sign up for a race and dedicate myself to a training plan. Later in 2017, I was able to complete the Glastonbury 5K in Glastonbury, Connecticut, and the popular Manchester Road Race in Manchester, Connecticut. Ive since graduated to 10Ks.
Along with adding exercise into my routine, I also changed my eating habits. Prior to my weight-loss journey, I ate a lot of fast food, fried dinner, and big portions until I was stuffed.
It took time, but I slowly worked on making small changes that turned into big changes. For instance, I am still working my way to being 100-percent vegetarian; I have to admit, having wings while watching football on Sundays is still a guilty pleasure. But I also found new favorite meals like meatless meatballs, jasmine rice, and honey sriracha Brussels sprouts.
Additionally, Ive also focused on watching my portion sizes so I dont overeat. Now I feel less lethargic and more energized, which means I can play with my child more and not feel fatigued.
Four years of dedication has brought me down 87 pounds and kept me there. Ive shrunk as a person and grown as a runner. My current goal is running every day, no matter the distance, for an entire year. Currently, I am over 150 days in, running six miles at most each run.
This is a special goal for me because I attempted it twice last year. Injuries and poor stretching routines held me back then, so I wont let it stop me now.
My advice to anyone who wants to go on a similar journey is to find your why. I didnt want to feel out of shape anymore. I wanted to play with my son and fit into clothes. Once I determined this is what I wanted, it was easier to make the changes. Having a why is an important factor to be able to make it through your journey.

"A major factor to losing weight is to have someonewhether it be a friend, partner, or coachhold you accountable to ensure you're on target with your goals, help you work through any hurdles and serve as a source of encouragement." She notes that while plenty of people lose weight without paying someone to hold them accountable, they didn't do it alone. "Finding someone who will push you when you're not focused and also celebrate milestones makes a huge difference."

Djavid suggests keeping track of your progress on a calendar. "When you're on a mission to lose weight, it's helpful to look back and pinpoint the exact days where you felt confident and accomplished, but also mark the days where you didn't see or feel as much success," she points out. "After a month or two, take time to look back and see if you notice improvements or patterns. Losing weight and maintaining that ideal weight is a journey and for many, can take several months. "Set up little rewards along the way to stay on the right path," suggests Djavid. "Whether it's a size goal, a weight goal or an inches goalthe trick is to reward yourself along the way. Don't use a food reward, but instead go get a massage or facial or go do a fun activity with friends."

Drinking water regularly throughout the day will help keep the pounds at bay. "Drinking a glass of water can actually boost metabolism by up to 30% for the next hour," Lauren Minchen, MPH, RDN, CDN, nutrition consultant for Freshbit, the AI-driven visual diet diary app, reveals.

Added sugar in the forms like corn syrup are associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, Minchen notes. "Reducing your intake of added sugars removes empty calories, supports a healthy blood sugar and insulin level, and supports a healthy body weight," she explains.

Exercising portion control and tracking your food intake is incredibly effective in terms of weight loss success. "Portion control helps keep total caloric intake and macronutrient balance in check, which helps support a healthy body weight. And tracking your food in a food diary can help bring awareness and mindfulness to your portions and macronutrient intake. Weight lifting doesn't necessarily bulk you up. In fact, it can do the opposite. "Lifting weights/adding resistance to your workouts a few times per week will help boost metabolism for the next 24-48 hours after exercise, which means a greater daily caloric burn, a reduced body fat percentage, and a higher lean mass (muscle, bone) percentage over time," Minchen reveals.

Eat your way to weight loss by adding more protein to your diet. "Eating adequate protein to support weight loss (about 0.5 gram per pound of body weight) can help preserve lean body mass (muscle, bone) while boosting metabolism for a greater calorie burn around the clock," explains Minchen. It also supports satiety after meals, so you may not feel the need to snack or munch in between meals as often as you would without adequate protein intake.

The majority of dieters spend a lot of time weighing themselves and counting calories. However, Gomer says this is a mistake. "My advice is to ditch the numbers: calorie counting and the number on the scale are, not measurements of health," she maintains.

If you are hungry, your diet isn't working, says Gomer. "At Pritikin we follow the number one rule for weight loss: you can't be hungry," she reveals. Weight loss has to be healthy, says Gomer. "We can find studies that support low carbohydrate diets as beneficial, and ones that cause weight loss. That does not mean they are sustainable or healthy for the long term. When you don't sleep well your body is stressed, it produces cortisol (a stress hormone), and that affects the insulin response, explains Gomer. "That is why you can have a harder time losing weight when you don't sleep well."

People who succeed at maintaining a healthy lifestyle do three things, per Gomer: exercise most days of the week, make vegetables the star on their plate, and don't eat after dinner. Jamie Costello of the Pritikin Center, (a certified personal trainer with a Master's of Science degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion) has some great tips to find motivation: "Focus on the moment of how great exercise makes you feel that feeling of energy and wellness, or that 'I did it' feeling you get when you're done. Gomer reminds that eating is a coping mechanism some use to manage stress. "It works for the short term, but we can pay a pricein our health, energy, weight gain," she points out. Johnny Zolton had always struggled with his weight, but things took a drastic turn when he lost his mother at the age of 15. "I quit playing all my sports in school and resorted to playing video games and eating junk food," he says. His inactive lifestyle and unhealthy diet led to continual weight gain, and by the time Johnny was 25 years old, he weighed 445 pounds.
"I felt useless as a person," he says. "Before my youngest son was born I was playing outside with my other two children. I was walking up the two steps of my porch was extremely out of breathe. I thought in that moment, 'I have to do something or I wont be here for my children. I wont be here to walk my daughter down the aisle. I wont be here to coach my boys in sports.'"
That day ended up being a real turning point. From then on, he began exercising daily, beginning with by focusing on cardio. He also completely changed his nutrition, eating mostly eggs, chicken, rice, and broccoli, before eventually adopting the keto diet.
"It was hard at first, understanding how many carbs were in everything, and how everything felt like it had carbs in it," he says. "Once I got into the swing of things its been a lot easier and I really enjoy it... I love eggs. I eat so many and dont feel bad at all about it. I also enjoy steak and any red meats."
Everything Johnny did, from his workouts to going keto, was self-taught from YouTube and Reddit, without trainers or dieticians. He currently lifts weights seven days a week, and runs a couple of miles every single day. All-in-all, it was a six-year process; starting out at 445 pounds, Johnny eventually lost a total of 210 pounds, and now, at age 31, currently weighs in at 235 pounds. And he's not finished yet.
"My end goal is just to continue to get more healthy, and eventually work myself down to 10 percent body fat or less," he says.

My breakfast: Ash gourd juice and fresh fruits (apple, pear, chikku, mango, banana, papaya, muskmelon, lychee, dragon fruit, pomegranate, guava, etc)
My lunch: I usually like to have a one-grain meal - red rice or green moong dal khichdi or jowar roti or bajra roti or red rice poha, red rice+ black urad dal dosa or millet idli with lots of vegetables, sprouts and salad
My dinner: Salad, soup and dates or fruits
Pre-workout meal: Fasting for 12 hours and dates in the dinner prior to morning exercise.
Post-workout meal: I don't like to have anything for 30 minutes post completing my workout, not even water. Only after taking a break, I have ash gourd juice or fresh fruits.
I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): Wheat thepla or wheat paratha or kulcha. Frankly, theres no joy in cheating myself and I always kept in mind the cheat will delay my target weight.
Low-calorie recipes I swear by: All of my favourite weight loss friendly recipes are majorly raw or vegan. I eat all fruits including mango, sapota, etc, and salad without salt. Being raw vegan most of the time and eating only one grain meal in addition to doing 16 hours of fasting helps in increasing energy levels to jog comfortably. Eating mindfully and calorie dense foods.
