Coke, Zero Sugar and Diet launch 100% rPET bottle in the US – BeverageDaily.com
The new bottles will be available in convenience retail locations in the Northeast, Florida and California this month; across the Coca-Cola trademark brands (Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, Diet Coke). Fanta 13.2oz bottles will also be available in rPET bottles. In California, Texas and New York, 20oz 100% rPET Coke trademark bottles will also be available.
Across rPET innovations across its portfolio including with Coke, Dasani, Smartwater and Sprite the company says it is reducing the use of new plastic across its portfolio in North America by 20% from a 2018 baseline. This represents a 10,000 metric ton reduction in GHG emissions a year or the equivalent of taking 2,120 cars off the road for a year, says the company.
The new 13.2oz (390ml) 100% rPET bottle (excluding cap and label) has to deal with the demands of a carbonated beverage, without the consumer being able to notice the difference to a traditional plastic bottle.
Developing a new bottle made from 100% rPET was a challenge, Alpa Sutaria, vice president and general manager of sustainability, The Coca-Cola Company North America, told this publication. It took us about nine months to get to a point where we had designed a bottle that could not only meet the packaging performance required for a carbonated beverage, but also, once tested with consumers, we had a final product they were happy with.
The consumer should not notice a difference in their drinking experience.
Like other companies, Coca-Cola has had to address availability of rPET in order to create a bottle that can be produced at scale.
One of the biggest challenges in creating this bottle is procuring enough clean, food grade recycled plastic to be able to make enough of these sustainable bottles. We are working with several suppliers to source rPET for use in our packaging across the US. We are also continuing to invest in local recycling programs and infrastructure to help ensure that Americans can recycle our bottles and cans conveniently whether at home, at work or in public spaces, which is -- in turn -- recycled and reprocessed to make rPET for use in our bottles and other products.
Coca-Colas new rPET bottles will also include Recycle Me Again messages to prompt consumers to recycle bottles. It also champions the bottles design makes for a more sippable package for consumption on the go.
While launching 100% rPET bottles for its biggest and most iconic brand will boost its use of rPET, the 13.2oz bottle is just one of the sizes and packaging format for brand Coke and the company remains tight-lipped on how many 100% rPET bottles will be available or what percentage of its brand Coke sales can be expected to come from the bottles once they roll out at scale in the summer.
The price of the 100% rPET remains on a par with Coca-Cola's other bottles ($1.59 for the new 13.2oz size compared to $1.99 for a 20oz bottle).
At the moment, rPET accounts for around 10% of Coca-Colas global plastic packaging, although this depends on the market (in California, for example, Coca-Cola puts this figure at around 20% rPET). The company wants to boost this to an average of 50% recycled material in bottles and cans by 2030.
In the US, a series of transitions to increased rPET are scheduled for the coming months. This will start with the 13.2oz sip-sized bottle in the Northeast, Florida and California; then see Sprite roll out 13.2oz clear bottles made from 100% rPET in February in the same markets. Dasani will debut 20oz 100% rPET bottles in California, Texas and New York in March; while the brand will take these bottles to 30% rPET nationwide. In July, smartwater will launch 20oz 100% rPET bottles in California and New York.
In the summer, the 100% rPET 13.2oz bottle will roll out nationwide across a variety of brands including Coke trademarks, Fanta and Sprite.
Elsewhere, the trademark Coca-Cola brand already uses 100% rPET bottles in the Netherlands and Norway (as does the whole of locally produced beverage brands in the countries). In the UK, Coke bottles use 50% rPET.
Across the wider portfolio, Coca-Cola Company currently offers 100% rPET bottles in some form in 18 markets globally.

What the New Dietary Guidelines Left Out – WebMD – WebMD
Every 5 years, the government comes out with recommendations for how we should eat called the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Even if the average person doesnt follow them to a letter, what they say really matters. The Guidelines help shape policies and programs that affect millions of people and even influence the food industry.
The newest edition includes familiar advice about eating a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. But its actually what the Guidelines left out that you should know about.
First, some quick backstory: Before the Guidelines are released, an advisory committee of scientific experts looks at the evidence and submits a report with what they think should be included. Then two government agencies, the USDA and HHS, write the Guidelines.
This time around, the committee recommended two things that didnt end up making the final cut: stricter advice around both alcohol and sugar.
Since 1990, the Guidelines advice about alcohol has been no more than two drinks a day for men and one for women, and the latest edition stuck with that. One drink is the equivalent of 12 ounces of regular beer (5% alcohol), 5 ounces of wine (12% alcohol), or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits (40% alcohol).
But the committee had suggested tightening that guidance to one drink or less per day for both men and women, citing evidence that the health risks are higher with more than that. Rates of drinking are up among Americans, including binge drinking. Deaths from alcohol are up too, with alcohol accounting for 100,000 deaths every year.
As for sugar, the advice has morphed from avoid too much sugar in the 1980s to a suggested limit of no more than 10% of calories from added sugar (also included in the newest Guidelines). Most people get about 13% of their calories from sugar.
Yet the committee suggested an even lower intake of 6% of calories. Their reasoning: Reducing sugar could help public health. And most people need to focus their daily calories on foods that give them the nutrients they need -- they cant afford to spend those calories on sugary foods and drinks. (The top sources of added sugar are sweet beverages and desserts.)
Why didnt these stricter limits make it in? The authors of the Guidelines didnt think there was enough evidence -- and they arent obligated to take all the committees recommendations anyway.
Lets face it: A global pandemic is not exactly the best time to shame people about drinking alcohol or eating sugar. But its good to know whats on the minds of some health experts, what kind of recommendations we might see down the road, and what we might want to consider for our own lives.
So in the meantime, heres what both the committee and Guidelines do agree on: However much alcohol you drink, drinking less is better for your health than drinking more (and if you currently dont drink, dont start for health reasons). And limit portions of sugar-sweetened drinks -- or better yet, replace them with water.

Between Amens What is your level of spiritual fitness? – The Record
Dr. Karen Shadle
Like approximately 80 million other Americans, I set some fitness goals for the new year. And like about 79 million of them, I would like to give up. Recently I came across a blog post about the cold, hard truths of exercise that helped explain my mediocre progress so far. Experts say that for exercise to be truly effective in changing your body, it has to be hard. Like uncomfortably hard.
Easy, low-intensity exercise brings many benefits, such as improved mood and better sleep. However, research suggests that if you want to achieve measurable biometric change losing weight, building muscle, lowering blood pressure, rehabilitating an injury, or improving a triathlon time an easy stroll wont do it.
Whatever your starting fitness level, you have to do the difficult things to get results. Furthermore, over time, that which was once hard will become easy and thus less effective at producing change. Simply put, you have to get sweaty and out of breath.
This is unwelcome news for me, a self-smug daily jogger. I have an early-morning exercise routine that I enjoy. It makes me feel productive and healthy. But its pretty easy for me, so I have unsurprisingly made little progress toward my 2021 fitness goals.
So too, Im afraid, with the spiritual life. Im not aware of any research to back this up, but I suspect it is quite easy for Christians with a healthy spiritual routine to become complacent and stall their spiritual growth. We need to take up some hard things. Maybe its a difficult conversation with a loved one, or a visit to the confessional, or putting ones faith into action through advocacy. Whatever your level of spiritual fitness, what do you need to do to change your heart?
Lent seems to come at the perfect time every year, just as new years resolutions are losing steam. Ash Wednesday is an opportunity to recommit to growth, both physical and spiritual.
For Catholics, Lent is a decidedly carnal season. Many use Lent as a time to give up something enjoyable, such as sweets, social media or soda. The church teaches that God wants us to experience pleasure. The delights of this world a comfy couch, a rich dessert, a video game, a glass of wine are good. In excess, however, their goodness can become distorted and they prevent us from a right relationship with God and others.
Ive sometimes heard spiritual leaders suggest an additive approach to Lent that seeks to develop virtues instead of fasting from pleasures. Call a friend, do acts of kindness, or spend time meditating. Those arent bad ideas, but I dont want to overlook the importance of physical sacrifice.
Our faith is incarnational, sensory and bodily. The practices of fasting and giving up other physical pleasures is commendable. Sweating out a tough workout will, over time, change your body. Practicing self-denial will, over 40 days, tame the spirit. Physical sacrifices have the power to focus our attention on God. They also sharpen our appreciation for pleasure. After fasting, feasting carries new meaning.
Ours is a faith for the senses. Its why we have ashes and incense, bread and wine. Catholics, if you want to change, put in the difficult work. This Lent, lets work up a spiritual sweat and perhaps a physical one too.
Dr. Karen Shadle is the director of the Archdiocese of Louisville Office of Worship.

Virtual Fitness With or Without the Kids – – northeastohioparent.com – northeastohioparent.com
Its hard to think about tank tops and swimsuits when there is still snow on the ground, but summer bodies are made in the winter. If you dont feel comfortable going to a gym during a pandemic, there are still plenty of ways to get yourself feeling good.
You can now choose from many online and streaming workouts. Many of the programs dont even require equipment. However, you might benefit from buying a jump rope, yoga mat or weights.
On-Demand Classes
If you dont mind paying a membership, you can check out Beachbody on Demand. It has more than 1,500 programs and classes you can pull up right on your TV. It costs about $40 for three months, and its something you can do in your own living room and on your own schedule.
Many women took barre, yoga and Zumba classes at the gym before the pandemic. Now, in addition to subscription services like Beachbody, you can stream hundreds of free classes on YouTube and on Prime Video if youre a member of Amazon Prime.
Workout Connections
Do you thrive off the camaraderie of being around other determined women during your workout? If working out alone and listening to a recorded instructor doesnt motivate you, then check out Fit4Mom.
Fit4Mom offers pre- and-postnatal fitness programs in person and virtually. For example, you can join Stroller Barre, a cardio and strength interval class or Body Well, an eight-week program which includes small group fitness coaching and nutritional guidance. You can workout from home but still be with women from across Northeast Ohio.
Lyndsey Stephan is a mother of two, group fitness instructor and owner of the Cuyahoga Falls/Stow/Kent Fit4Mom branch. She says working out with other women is beneficial.
It helps with support, accountability and creating new friendships, especially in a time where people need each other more than ever, she says. In a time where we feel so isolated and alone, it is nice to be able to virtually see the moms in my village, she says.
No matter how you work out, Stephan says its important to change up your exercise routine.
You dont want to continuously work the same exact muscles every workout, she says. That will lead to muscle fatigue, which could eventually result in injury.
Stephan recommends that the average adult get 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week.
Regular exercise isnt only good for your physical health but also has a positive impact on your mental well-being, which helps fight depression and anxiety and reduces stress levels, improves sleep and boosts your mood.
Dont like working out virtually? No problem. Stephan says you can get in a great workout other ways.
It can be as easy as going for a 30 minute power walk, jog or run, she says.
Kids Join in
Only have time to work out when your child is with you? Try a program that incorporates your child in the exercises, such as Stroller Strides.
Stroller Strides is a functional, total-body conditioning workout designed for moms with kids in tow, says Sarah Andrecheck, the Fit4Mom owner and instructor in Beachwood/Shaker Heights. No more mama guilt. This class is all about self-care in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Have a Peloton account? Check out the virtual family classes they have available. You can find five- to 20-minute classes geared toward the entire family.
There are also a lot of free options on YouTube or Amazon. Just search for family workouts.
You must take care of yourselves in order to take the best care of your kiddos, Andrecheck says. You cant pour from an empty cup.
Whether you want to drop a couple pounds or just want to feel healthier, remember there are plenty of options out there. Do something today that your future self will be grateful for tomorrow.

Zoom fitness changing health and wellness behaviors at home – 10TV
In March of 2020 many trainers had to start being creative to keep their businesses going while gyms closed due to the pandemic-related shutdown.
COLUMBUS, Ohio Personal trainers have seen some clients flourish in the time of COVID with the help of zoom fitness.
In March of 2020 many trainers had to start being creative to keep their businesses going while gyms closed due to the pandemic-related shutdown.
Stephanie Hohn said she began building her garage gym at her home years before the pandemic and began to clients who were comfortable using the space at her home.
With many not wanting to take the risk, she decided to do zoom group fitness workouts, one-on-one training, and meal preparation using the online platform.
Some of my clients enjoyed it more and they actually felt that they got a harder workout in their house and I dont know exactly if some of that has to do with the fact that maybe when theyre out in a public area they have other eyes on them and there are other stressors. But when youre at home, youre more comfortable and you might push yourself harder, Hohn said.
The trainer meets with clients to understand what items are around their home they can use to create a workout. Hohn said stairs and rocks are simple items to use and bodyweight workouts can make a big difference.
When it comes to going back into the gym, Hohn said she understands there may be some clients who take much longer than others, and making that decision depends on the gym the client uses and their comfort level.
As for her clients, she said some of them are seeing big success and the reason may come down to addressing health patterns and behaviors while at home.
Thats where people are, its where we live, thats where we figure out how to operate on a daily basis. How are we going to eat? The fridge is right next to you all the time, so how are you going to change those behaviors so you can be successful? Hohn said.

Back in November 2017, Cleveland Cavaliers star Kevin Love had a panic attack during a home game against the Atlanta Hawks.
I was having trouble catching my breath, he wrote in a piece for The Players Tribune the following March. Its hard to describe, but everything was spinning, like my brain was trying to climb out of my head. The air felt thick and heavy. My mouth was like chalk. I remember our assistant coach yelling something about a defensive set. I nodded, but I didnt hear much of what he said. By that point, I was freaking out.
Here was a pro athlete, among the best of the best, and he was openly talking about his vulnerability. Here was a man who had spent the better part of his life building his body into an elite basketball machine, but who had not spent enough time on his mind. Its kind of strange when you think about it, he wrote. In the NBA, you have trained professionals to fine-tune your life in so many areas. Coaches, trainers, and nutritionists have had a presence in my life for years. But none of those people could help me in the way I needed when I was lying on the floor struggling to breathe.
Coa cofounders Dr. Emily Anhalt (left) and Alexa Meyer[Photo: Kendall B. Schiff/Coa]Now Love is helping to launch Coa, short for coalesce, the worlds first gym for mental fitness.
Founded by Alexa Meyer and Dr. Emily Anhalt in 2019, Coa is a therapist-led, emotional fitness class platform that includes therapist matchmaking, group classes, and one-on-one therapy. The idea is to make mental health a proactive and daily practicejust like physical fitness. Coas programs are built on Dr. Anhalts research-driven method on the 7 Traits of Emotional Fitness: self-awareness, empathy, play, curiosity, resilience, mindfulness, and communication.
Coa really aligns with everything Im about, says Love. Its a proactive approach to mental fitness. Were creating a safe place to talk about these tough subjects around mental health and mental wellness, in a group setting. There is nothing like this out there. This has never existed before. Its the first gym for mental health, which makes it super exciting to be a part of.
Meyer is a veteran of Interbrand and the analytics startup Keen IO, but she has always had an interest in mental health. She met Anhalt through Twitter, while putting together the idea for a pop-up mental health gym. The two launched pop-ups over the last two years in New York, San Francisco, L.A., Vancouver, and Toronto, as well as conducting classes with employees at Asana, Spotify, and Salesforce.
Mental health and technology has exploded since last year, with brands like BetterHelp and Talkspace seeing significant boosts in user numbers, but also challenges in balancing wellness with Silicon Valleys never-ending appetite for growth. Hannah Zeavin, a UC Berkeley lecturer in English and author of the forthcoming book The Distance Cure: A History of Teletherapy, told The New York Times last year, The app-ification of mental health care has real problems. These are corporate platforms first. And they offer therapy second.
Meyer and Anholt say one differentiator between Coa and others is having a psychologist in Anhalt in the C-suite as chief clinical officer.
[Photo: Coa]One of the reasons I got into this in the first place is that mental health is complicated, nuanced, and complex, and I wanted to make sure it was done thoughtfully, says Anhalt, who points to core tenets of the Coa approach. First is making the practice proactive, like going to the gym. Second is clinical integrity. This is really important, says Anhalt. In addition to having me as a clinical cofounder, all of our content is based on research and clinical experience, and its all created and facilitated by licensed therapists.
There are free intro classes, and after that various classes range in price from $25 to $30 per session. There are also several eight-week series at launch, such as Intro to Emotional Fitness, Emotional Fitness for Mental Wellness, and Emotionally Fit Leadership. The original plan was to set up a few brick-and-mortar studios in New York and San Francisco, then expand to an online platform. The pandemic flipped that script, and Coa is launching as a digital offering, and looking to set up physical spaces in the near future.
In creating Coas brand, Meyer didnt want it to feel like a clinical healthcare brand, but familiar and relatable, using a color scheme of warm, earthy tones. Theres this huge wellness trend happening right now, where people are spending trillions of dollars a year trying to feel better, and there are some amazing brands, but none of them are rooted in clinical integrity and efficacy, says Meyer. So our brand is a marriage of those two things: clinical integrity and safety, with this modern, accessible, fun approach.
