Can You Eat Potatoes on the Paleo Diet? – Healthline

Potatoes are a staple food around the world, featured in a variety of cuisines and popular dishes (1).

However, as theyre high in carbs and often served in highly processed forms, you may be curious whether you can eat them while following the paleo diet.

If youre new to the paleo diet, you should know that this way of eating focuses primarily on food quality. Specifically, it involves choosing whole, natural, unprocessed foods that are aligned with those that ancient hunter-gatherer societies may have eaten (2).

Generally, people who follow a paleo diet avoid grains, dairy, beans, and legumes, along with most added sugars and processed additives.

This article explains whether you can eat potatoes on the paleo diet.

Generally, unprocessed potatoes of all types can be part of a paleo diet.

Similarly to grains, which are off-limits on paleo, potatoes are starchy and rich in carbohydrates. However, potatoes are actually a type of starchy vegetable that grows underground, known as a tuber (2, 3).

In paleo circles, theres some debate about white potatoes because they are starchier than sweet potatoes and may raise your blood sugar levels more quickly.

However, when eaten with the skin, their nutrient composition is comparable to that of sweet potatoes. Therefore, they should be fine to eat in moderation on the paleo diet (4, 5).

As long as theyre free of additives, even frozen or dehydrated potatoes could be considered paleo as well.

Cooking methods can also make a difference in whether potatoes fit the paleo diet. For instance, homemade french fries would need to be baked or fried in a paleo-acceptable oil like coconut oil, while homemade mashed potatoes would need to be prepared without dairy.

Additionally, if youre doing a low carb or keto version of paleo, youll want to limit potatoes because of their carb content (3).

Keep in mind that potatoes, as well as other nightshade vegetables, such as eggplants and tomatoes, are off-limits on the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet, which resembles the paleo diet.

This protocol is an elimination diet typically followed by those with autoimmune conditions and other medical conditions to identify potential food triggers and improve symptoms.

Many people who follow the paleo diet are interested in optimizing their health, so the resistant starch content of potatoes may be of particular interest.

Resistant starch is a type of starch that your body cant easily digest. In this way, it behaves like dietary fiber. Resistant starch may help manage your blood sugar and blood fat levels, as well as help you absorb minerals more efficiently (6).

You can increase the resistant starch content of potatoes by heating and cooling them prior to eating. One example of a dish that would inherently contain resistant starch is cold potato salad, which can easily be made using paleo ingredients (1, 7).

Unless youre doing a low carb version of paleo or the AIP diet, unprocessed potatoes can be part of your diet. Depending on how theyre prepared, potatoes can be a good source of resistant starch, a unique type of fiber with some interesting health benefits.

On the other hand, many potato products arent appropriate for the paleo diet.

Its important to check the ingredient list before you discount any item in particular, but in general, the following potato-based foods wouldnt be considered paleo:

Unprocessed potatoes can be included on the paleo diet, while processed forms like potato chips or dehydrated mashed potatoes should not be included.

Unprocessed potatoes and potatoes that are cooked with paleo-friendly ingredients can be part of the paleo diet, which focuses on unprocessed foods and limits grains, legumes, and dairy.

Potatoes also contain resistant starch, a type of fiber that may offer some promising health benefits, such as improved blood sugar control.

However, certain potato products, such as those made with dairy or highly processed additives, arent considered paleo.

Unless youre following a low carb version of paleo or the AIP diet, unprocessed potatoes can be an excellent, nutritious addition to your diet.

The model told Vogue on Thursday that she's "not as small" as she was but is a "realistic thinker."

She added that anyone who says she has to be a size 0 for her career "can suck it."

Supermodel Gigi Hadid said she doesn't feel pressure to lose weight quickly after giving birth to her and Zayn Malik's daughter Khai.

The 25-year-old spoke about the changes her body has undergone in the four months since delivering her baby in a Vogue profile published Thursday.

"I know that I'm not as small as I was before, but I also am a very realistic thinker," she said, adding, "I straight up was like, 'Yeah, I'll shoot a Vogue cover, but I'm obviously not going to be a size 0, nor do I, at this point, feel like I need to be back to that.'"

Hadid continued, "I also think it's a blessing of this time in fashion that anyone who says that I have to be that can suck it."

Months before Hadid gave birth to Khai, the model told fans that her cheeks became rounder during her pregnancy.

"People think I do fillers on my face, and that's why my face is round. I've had this since I was born," she said during an Instagram Live with Maybelline in May.

She continued, "Especially fashion month, when I was already, like, a few months preggo."

The model, who was pregnant with Khai at the time, added she wasn't overly concerned with how her body would change in the future because she's "happy with the natural process of the world."

During a 2018 Harper's Bazaar interview with her friend Blake Lively, Hadid talked about being body-shamed on social media.

"Most of it is just nonsense. But it can still hurt," she said.

Hadid said that people thought she "gave in" to the modeling industry by slimming down. However, she said it naturally happened because she wasn't playing volleyball or horseback riding nearly as much.

She also explained that she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, which meant she "needed to eat healthy and work out."

"If I could choose, I would have my a-- back and I would have the tits I had a few years ago. But, honestly, we can't look back with regret," she said.

Steven Yeun and Michaela Coel were shut out at the Golden Globes, but the SAG Awards just vindicated them – Business Insider India

Both Steven Yeun and Michaela Coel were snubbed by the Golden Globe nominations on Wednesday, but the Screen Actors Guild Awards have helped right that wrong by nominating both actors and their respective projects.

The SAG Awards just nominated Steven Yeun for best actor. They also nominated his costar, Youn Yuh-jung, for best supporting actress, and "Minari" got a nod in the best ensemble category, too - the SAG equivalent of best picture.

Steven Yeun wasn't nominated at the Globes either, while a much-maligned Golden Globes rule meant that "Minari" was ineligible for a best picture drama nomination. Because 70% of "Minari" was spoken in Korean, the film was classified as a foreign language film and not allowed to be nominated for best picture drama.

New study finds going vegan leads to weight loss, glowing skin and increased libido – Vegan Food and Living

A new study from Holland and Barrett conducted in December 2020 has unveiled some interesting statistics, such as the most popular reason for choosing a vegan diet being the health benefits.

In fact, 41% of new vegans say they switched to veganism for their health, compared to 32% for ethical reasons, and 24% for sustainability and the environment.

These enticing health benefits have been identified as weight loss, glowing skin, and increased libido. Nearly half of the study participants said they had lost weight, with 60% seeing weight loss in the first three months.

Increased libido is something longterm vegan Pamela Anderson highlighted on social media recently, and even challenged Piers Morgan to try a vegan diet for that purpose. The actress tweeted to her 1.2 million followers:

Vegans make better lovers. The cholesterol in meat, eggs, and dairy causes hardening of the arteries (and not much else).

What’s on My MS ‘To-Don’t’ List – Everyday Health

To pass the time during this third wave of COVID-19, Ive found myself dipping in and out of several diddly little volumes. A bit of craic here, some sage advice there, and some mindlessly entertaining drivel now and again.

Funny, it seemed to me, to find a sage bit of advice in a book called Grumpy Old Wit. Even more absurd was that the piece of wisdom passed off as grumpy wit was attributed to the management guru Tom Peters.

Create, goes the quote, a to-dont list that contains tasks, rituals, and meetings that you should never waste your time on again. Then stick to it.

While Im confident that Mr. Peterss list is intended for important executives and high-powered leaders of business and industry, I think there is a solid plank in this pointer upon which to build a strong platform for living my life with multiple sclerosis (MS).

I know well the importance of a to-do list. Back in the day, I was even fairly good at managing myself and others using graduated running lists of priorities for multiple outlets and locations in various time zones.

Checking things off from such lists (or confirming that others had) gives one a sense of accomplishment, but also requires accountability to oneself to ensure that things dont fall through the cracks.

All well and good in either the business or the MS world. But what about to-dont lists?

The idea of looking back at various attempts Ive made during my decades of living with MS and jotting down those that were a complete waste of time (along with those with little or no net return) seems like a great way of turning negative experiences into positive outcomes.

Modes of exercise or weight loss that didnt work for one reason or another would be a good place to start for me. Various coping methods that were either unproductive or, worse, harmful would be up toward the top of my to-dont list as well.

But beyond the obvious, I think there is a lot of ore to mine in the discards of our previous attempts.

It could be some attachment to puritanism in our DNA, but we seem too often to regard ourselves as at fault if something doesnt work for us. We think we mustnt have tried hard enough or for long enough if an attempt falls flat. Rather, Id argue, some things just dont work or they dont work anymore.

Further, some things just arent worth the return on investment, monetary or otherwise. I think back on the long-term side effects of treatments for MS attacks, and Ill put those on the list. Perhaps they dont quite qualify as to-dont, but rather as only if as their echo can still be heard reverberating on my health.

Perhaps the most difficult, but possibly the most important, subjects to place on our running to-dont lists will be the people who have made the difficult parts of our life with MS more difficult or the good parts of life less good.

I know that for me, the toxic people in my life may be the hardest to untether from my habits. But they are likely also those who are most imperative to catalog and, paraphrasing Mr. Peters, stick to to avoid them sticking it to us again.

As I reflect on this idea, it may seem a bit harsh. A list of things to never waste time on again is a pretty damning list to put something or someone on.

If I think on it for more than a passing moment, however, I can see the extent of energy, pain, and self-doubt that would have been saved if Id recorded endeavors and antagonists, attempts and btes noires that led me down paths better not revisited.

Weve a finite reserve of energy and an ever-dwindling expanse of time upon which to spend that energy. Why then, please tell me, would we think it positive to step again on stones we know to be unsteady and that have before sent us unceremoniously skidding on our backsides?

No more. Im making an MS to-dont list and Im sticking to it!

REBEL Wilson shocked fans this week when she posed for an Instagram shot for her 9.5 million followers.

The Pitch Perfect star looked unrecognisable having embarked on a new health and fitness journey.

The 40-year-old captioned the photo: "Lots on my mind...aghhhhhh...#single-girl-heading-to-Super-Bowl!", confirming her split from billionaire boyfriend Jacob Busch.

But how did Rebel lose more that 60 pounds after declaring 2020 as a "year of health"?

At the time, she wrote on Instagram: Okay so for me 2020 is going to be called The Year of Health.'

So I put on the athleisure and went out for a walk, deliberately hydrating on the couch right now and trying to avoid the sugar and junk food, which is going to be hard after the holidays Ive just had but Im going to do it! Whos with me in making some positive changes this year?

She revealedher target weightof 165 pounds (11.7 stone) to her fans.

Rebel previously said that she had embraced the Mayr Method as well as working out with her trainer.

She reached her goal weight in November last year.

The diet is based on the book by Dr Harald Stossier and Helena Frith Powell.

The plan focuses on your gut and how the foods you eat ultimately affect your digestive system.

Most people will just buy the book but for those with a little more cash, they will visit a Mayr centre in Austria or London.

Here you will spend a week having your diet and routine scrutinised by experts who will help you with your snacking and reducing gluten and dairy intake - this will cost around 1,600 for the week.

The diet is not calorie controlled but you will be taught how to chew your food and will be encouraged to eat slowly.

People following the plan will have their biggest meal at breakfast and their smallest meal at dinner time.

Its website states: "VIVAMAYR combines modern complementary medicine with traditional diagnostics and therapies according to F.X. Mayr.

"Once we have treated your condition, proper nutrition combined with exercise and improved mental awareness become the building blocks of your new life.

"Modern Mayr Medicine is based on the four principles of Rest, Cleanse, Train and Substitute with the goal of integrating and practicing each principle individually for a period of time."

Aside from diet and wellness, Rebel has also been working out with personal trainer Jono Castano.

She regularly posts videos on her Instagram stories and part of her workouts include strength building such as flipping tyres.

As well as strength exercises she also makes sure to include cardio and incorporates sprint and high intensity interval training.

She also posts about going for hikes and long walks outside.

While it's important to include all of the major food groups in your diet, Rebel recently told People magazine that she had cut down on the amount of carbs and had upped her protein intake.

She said: "Before I was probably eating 3,000 calories most days, and because they were normally carbs, I would still be hungry.

So, I've really changed to eating a high-protein diet, which is challenging because I didn't used to eat a lot of meat. I eat fish, salmon, and chicken breast.

While Rebel has overhauled her image, she also said that she won't restrict herself and added that "nothing is forbidden".

She said she will still have take-out but that she might just eat half or have a smaller portion than she previously would have.

Rebel has also previously talked about emotional eating and said that food was something she used to cope with becoming internationally famous.

She added: "There is a lot of stress that comes with it, and I guess my way of dealing with it was just eating donuts."
