My name is Kari (@aspire.rise.achieve), and I'm 32 years old. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I work as a support worker for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. I struggled with my weight my whole life until I decided to start eating nutrient-dense foods, stay in a calorie deficit, and work out with Les Mills BodyCombat and BodyPump classes.
Before my weight-loss journey began, I had been overweight my entire childhood and teenage years. I remember getting teased starting as young as 6 years old, which was a struggle. I knew I looked different and wasnt happy with my weight but I lacked the understanding of how to make a change.
Once I was old enough to walk to the nearby store to buy a snack after school, the unhealthy choices became more frequent and accessible. This was when my problem with weight got worse. I always felt like my weight held me back from trying new things or meeting new people. I absolutely dreaded gym class. I couldn't find clothes in my size anywhere except at specialty plus-size stores that only carried adult styles of clothingnot what a teenager would want to wear to school.
I was at my heaviest around 16 years old, and I couldn't believe I saw 300 pounds on the scale. I knew it was a big problem, but I felt stuck. I just thought that was what my life was going to look like. I didn't believe I could change because I had never known anything else.
I also started having health problems. I had blood work done that showed signs of pre-diabetes, elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower HDL (good) cholesterol, as well as a hormone imbalance. I wanted to do something about my weight, so I'd try to eat more nutritious foods, but never stayed consistent.
At that point, my knees always hurt and would make grinding sounds as I walked up the stairs. I had no energy and was unhappy most of the time.
I had made many previous failed attempts to lose weight without success, but I knew this time was different. I was going to make a lasting change and lose weight. I researched and learned about the basics of good nutrition, calorie/energy balance, and exercise.
On May 18, 2008, I started applying the things I was learning to my lifestyle.

As a college student, I could also do it without it costing me a lot of money. I didnt want a quick fix or a fad diet that would result in regaining the weight back. So I focused on staying in a calorie deficit, learning to read nutrition labels, and becoming more aware of my consumption. I focused on eating nutrient-dense foods as much as possible, but still allowed flexibility since holidays and food-focused events and gatherings will always be a part of life.

Once I started my second year of college, I learned that students had free gym memberships to the campus fitness center. I had never worked out in a gym in my life, but I was very intrigued and joined. I started going every morning, Monday to Friday at 6 a.m., before my full day of classes and evening work. After graduation I joined a different gym, and Ive been there for the last 12 years.
It's a mixed martial arts inspired group fitness class. After I had my first baby in 2015, the group fitness instructor reached out and encouraged me to consider taking instructor training. I taught classes at my gym for about a year. I still do Les Mills BodyCombat and BodyPump workouts to this day virtually, along with running and lifting weights four days a week.

Through getting married and having two babies, I remain proud of how much my lifestyle has changed permanently. After having my first baby, I lost the weight postpartum within the first year. However, my second child had serious health issues, and after giving birth in 2018, I am now re-losing some weight from that pregnancy.
I advocate for sustainable weight-loss methods, because had I not placed focus on the education of nutrition and my body, I may not have been able to maintain it through so many major life changes. Now that things are settled, I am finally caring for myself again. I hope my story will help others believe in themselves, too.

The Raptor is for buyerswho want a truck to drive off-road straight from the factory while not compromising onpayload, towing, comfort ortechnology for daily use.
Features include a terrain management system, trail control and one-pedal drive. Terrain management allows owners to choose settings for driving conditions including sport, rock crawl andthedune-jumping, frequently airborne, Baja mode.
Thesystem automatically modifies steering feel, active valve exhaust, position-sensitive damping, throttle mapping and transmissionshift points to optimize Raptor's performance to conditions. Trail control is standard.
"Think of it as cruise control for low-speed driving," Eckert said. "Drivers just set a speed up to 20 mph and the Raptor manages throttle and braking to allow the driverto focus really only on steering.It makes it easier for drivers to maintain constant speeds over difficult terrain ... or for getting throughdeep snow or sand. It's activated simply using a button on the center console."

One pedal drive combines acceleration and braking; press to accelerate and release to brake. Just one footisneeded for off-road activity like rock crawling.
Raptor also has an onboard generator that prevents the need for a portable generator tocampor work, a key feature cited whenthe F-150 won the North American Truck of the Year.

The Ford team spent months in the desert torture testing.
"We start with a high-strength steel F-150 frame, which has been modified and reinforced for Raptor's extreme usage," said Tony Greco, Raptor program manager."The modifications and reinforcements which we makeinclude taller and stronger shock towers, unique control arm pivot locations, a lower front axle which is needed for increased travel, stronger bracketry for suspension, shocks and spring attachments and a Raptor-specific trailer hitch."

Raptor's front and rear suspensions were redesignedto improve off-road traction and stability and on-road ride andhandling quality, he said.
"The new five-link suspension design ...stabilizes the rear axle laterally and dramatically improves traction, which allows more torque to the rear wheels to be put to the ground," Greco said. Result: faster acceleration and better throttle responsiveness.

There's moreto shareabout ball joints, knuckles, wheel bearingsand coil springsbut you get the idea. Anytime designers talk about "geometry changes" in vehicle discussions, well, it's a good thing.
This is about aggressive control and stability off-road and smooth plush ride on road.
If youre jumping, the further down your wheels are hanging, the more absorption you're going to get when you land, due to the shock absorbers stroking.
"That's where we see the big value in off-road events, when you're often up and down quite a bit. The shock technology and how we've deployed that on this vehicle," architecture engineer Jack Cooper said. "You can go faster in the desert, you can hit bigger things. If youdon't have as much travel and can't absorb that energy, you'll hit harder, the suspension will bottom harder, and it'll be less comfortable and not as durable in theend."

All Creatures Great and Small Recap: The One With the Snack Hamper – Vulture


We love the things that help get us through hard times with a love that surpasseth understanding. With that in mind, I think you will understand when I say that this remake of All Creatures Great and Small is among the greatest things bestowed upon humankind in this last year. It is a gentle human drama filled with well-intentioned gentle humans trying their best, and the few times they are not trying their best, they are gently ashamed. I go into every new episode with the relief of I am about to watch a very nice thing. In these times, the appeal of that cannot be overestimated.
This entire episode revolves around a Pekingese. Yes, correct, it is the extremely wealthy Mrs. Pumphreys dog Tricki Woo, a dog I could not possibly love more, played by Derek. Wonderful dog acting from Derek once again this episode. Tricki is a pile of fluff. A Tribble of a dog. What is the greatest thing about Tricki? Is it his absurd leonine mane? The giant cushions he sleeps on? The fact that he shakes paws (I LITERALLY screamed when this happened)? His little snuffling noises? That Mrs. Pumphrey calls him my boofums? OR E, ALL OF THE ABOVE.
But before we get to Tricki, we also have Tristan. Or Tris, as I am forever calling him after last episode. Tris spends the episode asking Siegfried for money so he can go back to school and, presumably, have more fun than answering the phone at the practice and mixing horse medicine. Siegfried is understandably reticent because Tris keeps failing his exams, so Tris must prove himself. This somehow comes down to taking Tricki on walks, making the latter am I going to say it, yes I am a perambulating Pekingese (we have fun here). The practice has possession of Tricki because he is dangerously overweight. When asked if Mrs. Pumphrey has been sticking to his diet of dry dog biscuits, she says yes, to the letter, and then charmingly adds, perhaps not every letter. I AM STEALING THIS, DIANA RIGG. (RIP.)
She has been feeding Tricki calfs foot jelly, cod liver oil, Beef Wellington, and a bowl of Horlicks. If you are, like I am, an American, you might have said is that like ice cream? Nope! Think about milk, but its hot and also you add malt to it. I know, I dont get it either. Its slogan in 1961 was Horlicks the food drink of the night. NOPE. It was actually created in the United States and brought on expeditions to the North and South Pole, and then eventually that trickled on down to it being fed to the overly pampered Pekingese set.
James is concerned enough about Tricki that he takes him to stay at the practice so they can feed him appropriately and take him on walks. My notes for his visit at Mrs. Pumphreys just say GIMME THAT DOG, but we now need to move onto the very important fact that Tricki has a tiny, dog-size chaise longue. Has anyone made a website for Extravagant Pet Furniture, because I will look at that site every single day.
The drama of the episode hinges around the Hamper o Snacks, which Tris and Siegfried spend the following days pilfering. Despite Tris taking Tricki on very long walks and feeding him the presumably joyless dry dog food he must now consume for his health, Tricki is gaining rather than losing weight. This is because Siegfried left the hamper open and Tricki has been merrily dragging whole slices of ham out of it with his tiny dog strength. There is a big TO-DO about this, but! Lets talk about Clive real quick.
Dyou remember Clive? The massive bull who looks like one of those 18th-century paintings where you think that cows proportions are off, but really we just arent used to breeds of cow that arent Holsteins? Clive belongs to Helen and he has been sired out, i.e. hired to do it with someone elses cows, but hes not doing it, so James has to give him a shot of testosterone.
This is an unremarkable plot point, because the testosterone, undramatically, works, but its there to (1) let us once again see Clive, who is truly amazing and I love him, (2) show us everyone wearing velvet pants, or what I think are velvet pants, and it makes me want velvet pants, and (3) get James to give Helen a lift home, until they run into Hot Neville, who seems to have forgiven James for killing his horse. James has a Jessies Girl moment as he looks at the two flirting, but this dynamic remains the least interesting to me, because we know James and Helen are probably going to get married. Its very, yes, yes, check this off the list, now lets look at the others.
The relationships that are of true import here are Siegfried/Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Pumphrey/Tricki Woo. I cant nail down Siegfried and Mrs. Halls situation, and it makes me love it all the more. He knows more about her and her difficulties with her son than were allowed to know. He clearly feels something more for her, but its under enough layers of subtext that it seems hes not allowed to properly express it. They have this unspoken arrangement in their dynamic that I am all about and it feels like the actors have sat down and had a good discussion about their backstory and ITS JUST SO GOOD. As for Mrs. Pumphrey and Tricki Woo, that is a love for the ages.

When Helen inevitably dumps Hot Neville, will he find solace in the world of botany?
Will I descend into the uttermost depths of the All Creatures fandom, and now that weve found out the practices telephone number, change my WiFi Network to Darrowby2297?

Weight loss ‘before and after’ photos don’t give us a full picture of our health – The Guardian


Walking home from the shops one day I spotted a large advertisement for a local gym plastered to the side of a building. Flatten the curve in 2021, it shouted. Fascinating, I noted, how it simultaneously played on the collective trauma of the past year while also signalling its intrinsic fatphobia. Advertising, after all, is designed to first instil and then prey on our insecurities and anxieties.
We can all agree that the past year has been tough for the body. Lockdown restrictions and a surge in working from home have lulled most of us into a sedentary lifestyle. Add to this, too, the closure of spaces where wed step and sweat out our weeks gluttony: gyms, pools, even nightclubs. The past 12 months have even introduced us to concepts such as Covid kilos added body weight gained from surviving a deadly global pandemic.
Its been tough, but January takes the cake. Itchy from the crumbs of 2020, the month is kneaded with meager attempts at reinvention as new years resolutions seduce us into redistributing our behaviours, choices and priorities. Stricter diets and amped up exercise routinely perch atop most lists.
My local gym (surprise! Im not immune) uses a familiar tactic. The promotional fodder sees before/after photos of members, explicitly detailing how many kilos theyve shaved away.
And as I scroll down Instagram I realise that many of us have become mules for the Diet Industrial Complex, publicly sharing the success of our bodys journey from before to after. And why shouldnt we? Training and calorie-deficit dieting are examples of a discipline that is surely worthy of recognition.
But, when it comes to health, are body transformation photos truly the best metric to weigh on? Are before and after photos markers of achievement, or are they perhaps emblematic of our broader societys obsession with weight loss and narrow builds of body image?
In our pursuit to post, are we prioritising individual forms of bodily achievement over the collective wellbeing of our online communities? Why, I wonder, do we continue to see weight loss as an explicit phenomena worth celebrating?
At this point, many reading will sneer. Theyll cite statistics on the growing rate of obesity in Australias adult population. Theyll list the comorbidities: type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke. Weight loss, theyll suggest, is inextricably tied to health.
But as HuffPosts Michael Hobbes reported in 2018, everything you know about obesity is wrong. Through a host of interviews and scientific papers, Hobbes maintains that weight loss isnt as simple a science as one might assume. Some will have a much, much more difficult pathway to weight loss due to their unique individual factors. The longform piece concludes by arguing that mitigation efforts must shift from individual responsibility and intervention towards a focus on systematic issues, such as poverty, food management and regulation.
The piece also highlights a massive threat to fat people: our attitudes towards them.
Fatphobia, and its associated shame, stigma, and bias, can also cause severe health complications in fat people. New podcasts such as Maintenance Phase are doing important work in debunking our assumptions around wellness and weight loss.
Our unequivocal celebration of thinness doesnt help. In May 2020 Adele emerged from a social media blackout considerably slimmer. Editor of Bitch Magazine, Evette Dionne, was cautious about all the glowing praise: In a culture that often equates thinness with moral goodness, weight loss is worthy of celebration, no matter how its obtained or what it signals about whats happening with our bodies. Dionne reminds us that we dont know the details of Adeles weight loss nor should we yet were comfortable projecting our own virtues on to her new figure. The fact that we so uncritically assign positive attribution tells us everything we need to know about how we view bodies and value them.
This is personal. A decade ago my own disordered eating saw me lose a considerable amount of weight. I was told I looked great; but at what cost? Meals quickly became maths equations, calculating exactly how many calories sat on my plate. My body became a game in which there was no clear winner. When would I start living happily with my very own after?
My difficulty with body transformation photos is that were all somebodys before and somebody elses after in a system that so brutally values only a narrow margin of physiques. The crowded online environment feeds us an overflowing source of images that reveals to us the body hierarchy: here, one persons success can all too quickly become anothers source of shame. Whats more, were sold universal dreams (flatten the curve you could lose this weight, too) that grate up to the very real limits of our body or worse, we decide to push beyond them.
In July 2018 Lena Dunham shared an Instagram before/after that was startlingly different. In the before she was thinner, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work. In the after she was bigger, happy joyous & free, complimented only by people that matter for reasons that matter. Shes honest about her reflections: Even this OG body positivity warrior sometimes looks at the left picture longingly, until I remember the impossible pain that brought me there and on to my proverbial knees. As I type I can feel my back fat rolling up under my shoulder blades. I lean in.
The past 12 months have taught us that we need to be kinder to ourselves, heaving off arbitrary pressures and expectations.
We need to curve a new language around our bodies and their unique capabilities and limits. We need to prioritise our bodys internal circuitry both physical and mental if were to take our health seriously. We need to uproot our internalised fatphobia. Most importantly, we need to start recognising that everybody every body is deserving of dignity and respect.
