Welcome back to Beauty Basics, a column dedicated to ending pervasive beauty myths (like whether or not pores open and close and if niacinamide is really all that!) once and for all. In this edition we're taking a look at the relationship between milk, acne, and skin inflammation.
Naturally, my mind went straight to my increased dairy intake, since the aphorism that "milk's bad for your skin" is as common as "drink water for good skin." (Been there, tried that). And interestingly, I wasnt completely wrong this time. We know that dairy, particularly skim milk, has been associated with skin inflammation and acne breakouts, says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Associate Professor of Dermatology and Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research at Mount Sinai Hospital. The thought is that skim milk contains a high sugar load as well as whey protein which activates messengers that stimulate our oil glands. This means more oil and inflammation, leading to acne breakouts.
Lets talk about whey protein real quick, since you might only know it as something you can buy in bulk for your smoothies. Whey proteins are mixtures of proteins isolated from whey, which is the liquid part of milk that separates when cheese is made, explains Skin Wellness Dermatologys Dr. Corey L. Hartman. From there, this protein can create a domino effect. Whey increases the production of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). Insulin increases the production of oil, which contributes to the development of acne. It also triggers androgen production, testosterone hormones that stimulate oil and cause acne, says Hartman. Dr. Joyce Imahiyerobo-Ip, CEO of Vibrant Dermatology and Skin Bar MD, also notes that cow milk contains caseinanother protein linked to IGF-1and high levels of progesterone, which is converted to an acne-stimulating hormone dihydroxytesterone in human sebaceous glands.
But wait, theres more. Daily Harvest nutritionist Amy Shapiro notes that while the hormone IGF-1 is found in our blood already, cows that are treated with Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (RBGH) tend to have higher IGF-1 levels, since RBGH stimulates milk production by stimulating the release of IGF-1. (Thats why certain dairy milks are advertised as RBGH-free.)
Swapping in non-dairy milk isnt a get-out-of-jail-free pass, either. Shapiro points out that while alt milks might not contain casein, whey protein, or hormones"which can help consumers avoid skin and digestive issues"they can be formulated with gums, emulsifiers, preservatives, carrageenans, and extra sugar. These can trigger gut and skin issues, too. When purchasing alt milks, I recommend reading ingredient labels first, she says. Look for clean, simple, whole-food-based ingredient lists.
So, remember how I said I love dairy milk? I still do, even though this is all a lot to take in. Dairy isnt all bad. Fermented dairy products, such as yogurt, help deliver probiotics to the body, says Zeichner. And that has a domino effect as well: Probiotics are bacteria that help restore a healthy microbiome. The microbiome is the collection of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses that live symbiotically on our bodies.
I switched from the occasional splash of skim milk just to see what would happen, and surprise, surprisemy involuntary sunburn went away. Although my nose is probably always going to look a little redder and jollier than Id like, my skin tone actually looks like the rest of my face now. Not too shabby for a skin care fix I can take with my coffee.

Apple is adding celebrity-guided walking workouts to Fitness Plus today, with new walks to be added every Monday through the end of April. The new feature, called Time to Walk, pairs music and inspirational monologues from famous musicians, athletes, and actors with the exercise tracking that Apple Watch and Fitness Plus are known for.
Todays launch includes walks with Shawn Mendes, Dolly Parton, Draymond Green, and Uzo Aduba. Apple says each Time to Walk episode features personal, life shaping moments from each influential persons life and career, along with lessons, memories, and moments of levity. The celebrities will also introduce a playlist of songs after their talk to keep the motivation going for the rest of your walk and beyond. Also interesting to note, Apple says each episode was recorded as the celebrity guests walked in a place that was personally meaningful to them.
On the technical side of things, Time to Walk episodes will be automatically downloaded to Fitness Plus subscribers Apple Watches and will play over Bluetooth headphones. Walkers will have access to the usual exercise metrics like time, pace, heart rate, and distance, and Apple says Time to Walk will display photos on your Apple Watch timed to moments in each guests story. Time to Walk is called Time to Push for wheelchair users, and it relies on watchOSs wheelchair workout tracking to provide fitness information.
In terms of subject matter and tone, Time to Walk episodes sound like theyre more in the TED Talk school of inspirational audio than something you might hear on a laidback podcast, but for fans of each star or influential guest, they might be worth a listen and stroll.

Fitness TikToker Erika Rischko, 81, is proof that its never too late to try something newand succeed. The mother of two and grandmother of one began regularly working out in her mid-50s when her daughter signed her up for a local gym membership. Now, according to Good Morning America, she exercises twice a day, several days a weekand thanks to social media, her 100,000-plus followers can join her.
I am really honored and humbled that younger people are being inspired by me, Rischko told the outlet. I love comments such as, You are so inspiring, life goals, couple goals, can you be my grandparents? She continued: If I can change the stereotype of old people being boring or not being active just a bit, that makes me very happy. Her husband, whos also 81, often joins her at the gym and appears in many of her posts.
Its safe to say that Rischko is more than just activeshe often switches up her workouts, and she doesnt skimp on intensity. If you scroll through her TikTok or Instagram page, youll find her pedaling out mountain climbers, bear plank climbs, and holding 30-second weighted planks. Shes all about maintaining her strength, and reminds followers that every move countsfunctional balance and strength training prevent falls and falls-related injuries.

Rischkos clips really started to gain traction at the start of the pandemic, when gyms were closed and TikTok surged in popularity. Her daughter knew the world would love them and urged her to share moreso she began participating in some of the apps fitness and dance challenges. The response was just overwhelmingly positive, which I have found very uplifting as I have been very insecure all my life, she told GMA.
Her TikTok videos have more than 2 million likes at the time of publication. I would have never expected to get this many uplifting comments and followers, she added. Both apps [Instagram and TikTok] have helped me to stay up to date with technology and what the younger generations are up to these days.

Her advice for people of all ages looking to be more active? Do not do anything extreme, there is no need toand start slowly, she said. Just eat healthy, but do not chastise yourself. She added that its important to personalize your routine. Find a sports activity that you enjoy because if you do not enjoy it you will not last, she said. And if you are not as disciplined as I am, find a workout partner as it is not that easy to cancel on somebody.
She only wishes she wouldve started working out earlier.

A 2008 study found that people with home gym equipment were73% more likely to start exercisingthan those without.Beyond just having the equipment at home, following along with instructors on a large screen, tracking your personal performance over time, and being able to find a class on your own schedule should keep things interesting.
Buying a Vaultincludes aniFit Family Membership for one year, which can support up to five user profiles (valued at $468). Thisindependent fitness program has evolved considerably over its 20 years in service and offers a variety of workouts led by a team of personal trainers. The iFit workouts include full-body and muscle-specific strength training, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), sculpt tone, mobility, pilates, yoga, mindfulness, and more.Workout programming is created to safely and effectively deliver maximum results.
Adhering to an instructor through a workout means youre less likely to let yourself off the hook by skipping your weak spots, and the structured routines are meant to warm up and activate the body before pushing its limits.
Proper form is important when lifting free weights, which is where the smart mirror should help. The Vault allows users to look right at the instructors leading them through the movements and motivating them to help get the most out of their workout. The Vault recreates the in-person personal training experience that is user-focused and engaging.
Free weight exercises are more versatile than gym machines designed to hit one muscle group. Having to control the free weight at all times activates stabilizer muscles, which can improve biomechanics and prevent injury as well as burn more calories.
Following the growing library of interactive workouts makes it easier to keep your routine fresh. And lets be honest, youre more likely to try new workouts at home, where you can fail and find weak spots away from the eyes of classmates looking into the same gym mirror.
Anyone who has thought about giving up on the gym or is stuck in their fitness routine should consider the Vault asa low-profile, highly versatile base for at-home fitness.
The Vaultretails for $2,999 equipped with a full suite of premium weights and other fitness accessories, or you can buy a standalone version for $1,999. Both include the 1-Year iFit Family Membership, which can support up to five user profiles (valued at $468).

2 Peloton Instructors Share Their Fitness and Food Diaries For the New Year – POPSUGAR
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
I have a lot of thoughts during my Peloton workouts, including, but not limited to: "The instructor's workout set make it mine. Now." and "How the hell are the coaches still managing to speak through such intense cardio?" That brings me to my latest query: "How often are these instructors actually working out when they're not teaching classes?" I know I can't be the only one who's curious about their daily routines. These people have a job that literally requires them to be on their A-game all the time, so staying hydrated, fueled, and motivated is of the utmost importance. I can't say I wouldn't enjoy being pantsless on the couch 99.9 percent of the time I wasn't recording in the studio.
But when I spoke to Jess King, Peloton cycling instructor, and Anna Greenberg, Peloton yoga and meditation instructor, I quickly realized the Peloton instructor lifestyle is an active one literally all of the time. King and Greenberg took me through their typical schedules, shed light on their meal plans, and even revealed some personal workout goals for 2021.
King wants to deepen her Pilates practice and improve her handstand, while Greenberg's wellness intentions are a little less specific. "I don't have a set schedule of what days or how often I do each type of workout. Instead, I like to listen to my body and do what feels good (which always includes rest days of doing absolutely nothing!)," she told POPSUGAR.
Ahead, get to know the ins and outs of King and Greenberg's workout and healthy lifestyle regimens, and learn the motivational words that keep them strong. Hopefully, these two will inspire you, just as they inspired me, to get active, but also to take this new year day by day and listen to what your body is asking of you.

I come from an Army background. My dad was a Colonel so, yes, I am a warriors daughter. I am a graduate from National School of Drama and then I made my way to Mumbai.
I did a lot of fashion shows as a model and showstopper in Mumbai. I also did a bit of theatre and shows. It was a film called Policegiri with Sanjay Dutt that gave me a good break.
I dont know what else I wouldve been. Honestly, that question has never occurred to me.
What I have learnt from my life is that no medicine, no therapy can save you if you dont want to be okay. That call has to come from you, from your inner voice. I have been to Benaras and used to spend lot of time at the ghats to search for my soul; last year I also went to Sadhgurus ashram, there I spent 20 days, which also helped me.
Yes, I have two sets of love birds at home. After my father passed away last year, I was all alone at home. There was complete emptiness and then I brought them home. They brought a lot of positive vibes in my life.
My hobby is to write poetry. So far I have written close to 200 poems. I am also a kathak dancer. I have learnt belly dancing too and am a fitness freak.
I am keen on web series. I have received a few offers, but most of them needed a lot of skin- show, which I am not comfortable with. Web series have some great content and I am eagerly waiting for the right offer.
