North Hampton Library offering virtual fitness classes for kids and teens – Seacoastonline.com
Portsmouth Herald
NORTH HAMPTON The library will host a Jumping into Fitness program for kids and teens via Zoom.
The 30-minute virtual workouts will be coached by athletic trainer and gym owner, Justin Mahan of the new North Hampton business, Seacoast Athletics. The classes will be offered Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. for youth 10 and older.
Justin Mahan says of his programming style, I believe that fitness should be fun and not be a competition. Every person is uniquely different and their daily fitness should mirror that. Exercise programs should reflect abilities, focus on individual goals, and take things like experience and health history into account.
The classes start Tuesday, January 19. The exercises will be movements that can all be done at home with no equipment necessary. All fitness levels and abilities are welcome.
Lauren Chartier, youth services librarian says of the event, What perfect timing! So many kids and teens have made New Years goals to exercise more or try their first hike. The workouts are also great for youth who are in-between sports or stuck inside for the winter. Ive worked out with Justin before and he is such a great coach! He is so knowledgeable about fitness and has this way of boosting your confidence.
Justin has over 15 years of experience in the fitness world as a coach for various gyms. His background includes completing Chris Hinshaws Aerobic Capacity course, becoming a Certified Level 3 Crossfit Trainer, and attending numerous weightlifting and gymnastics seminars. He has a bachelors in biology and a masters in education.
Justin opened his own gym, Seacoast Athletics, in North Hampton in December 2020. To learn more about Justin and Seacoast Athletics visitwww.seacoastathletics.info.

PET TALK: Exercise with your pet this new year – New Castle News
If your New Years resolution is to exercise more, then consider including your dog in your routine.
Just like humans, dogs need daily exercise to stay fit and healthy no matter their age or breed.
Dr. Stacy Eckman, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offered some insight on exercise programs for dogs.
Unless their health prohibits it, all dogs need some form of daily exercise, Eckman said. However, the amount of exercise depends on the dogs breed and age. For example, high-energy and working dogs require regular exercise to stimulate them mentally and keep them from getting bored.
Other breeds may only require exercise to maintain or achieve a healthy weight and lifestyle.
In other words, a puppy or younger dog will probably have more energy than an older dog, and a Chihuahua probably wont be able to walk the same distance as a Border Collie.
Before beginning any sort of exercise routine, Eckman recommends having your dogs veterinarian evaluate its health condition.
Work with your veterinarian to develop a diet and exercise program that is tailored for your pet, Eckman said.
Story continues below video
For example, if your pet currently is overweight or lives a sedentary lifestyle, you shouldnt take them on a five-mile run the first day. In this case, Eckman said to start slow and gradually work a few minutes of exercise into their routine each day.
This is where tailoring the exercise to the pet and their individual needs is best, Eckman said.
Exercising can also benefit dogs that are prone to arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other health conditions that can affect mobility. Although it may seem that rest is better for dogs that have joint stiffness or soreness, exercising can actually help relieve this discomfort.
To alleviate pain, regular exercise, weight management, and veterinarian-prescribed medications are key in these pets, Eckman said. You may also rethink your exercise routine for these dogs. Instead of running or walking, try activities such as swimming to reduce impact and help keep their joints moving.
Senior dogs love to exercise and play, too. In fact, Eckman said keeping senior pets active is a good way to prolong their overall health and wellness.
Sticking to a New Years resolution can be ruff, but finding time to exercise with your dog will promote a stronger bond and an overall healthier lifestyle. But before you begin an exercise routine for your dog, remember to have them evaluated by a veterinarian. Now get outside and get moving!

What’s Next for Senior Tech? 5 Insights from the Thrive Center – HealthTech Magazine
1. Smart Technologies for Seniors Support Independent Living
From appliances such as induction cooktops for those with vision issues to refrigerators that let users see inside without opening the door (and set digital alerts for food expiration dates and order groceries for delivery), smart home devices offer flexibility and freedom to older adults.
These types of technologies can help enable a person to live at home, Rose says.
On a simpler and more cost-effective level, voice assistants can offer a helping hand for a variety of tasks. A user might ask a smart speaker paired with other devices throughout the house to adjust the thermostat, telephone a family member or see whos outside via a front-door camera.
Other tools may use light detection and ranging (lidar) technology to recognize motion in the home via laser scanning if the resident doesnt have a wearable or doesnt want to wear one, which is common for those with dementia. Likewise, sensors that use artificial intelligence can monitor changes in a persons gait and stride; changes detected to movement patterns can alert caregivers about the likelihood of a fall.
Beyond the typical smartwatches and consumer wearables such as Apple Watch and Fitbit, among others, a growing number of personal medical devices help older adults collect vital signs, capture and transmit that data and analyze it via dashboards for clinical review.
These include Wi-Fi-enabled pulse oximeters and blood pressure monitors that provide medically accurate measurements and immediate feedback.
MORE FROM HEALTHTECH:How COVID-19 accelerated digital transformation in healthcare.
Some smart hearing aids now feature Bluetooth technology and offer remote hearing-test capabilities; complementary apps can provide sound therapy designed to maintain and strengthen a users hearing.
Wearables, Rose says, have gained prominence since the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services expanded reimbursement for remote patient monitoring in 2019.
As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, meanwhile, tools that help reduce readmissions hold even more value. Chronic heart failure and other comorbidities can be monitored remotely and help seniors avoid exposure to the virus, keeping them safe and healthy at home, Rose says.
Some tools can even detect if something is amiss.
Smart tablets designed for seniors have integrated data collected from wearables. While youre playing solitaire on your tablet, you get an alert that you need to take a walk or take your heart medication, Rose says, also noting that certain wearables use geofencing and GPS technologies with two-way communication to alert caregivers if a person with dementia wanders away.
Although telehealth is not a new technology, the pandemic has promoted rapid adoption of virtual visits and video consultations functions that are critical to older adults with limited mobility and who are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 in public healthcare settings.
With so many videoconferencing options out there, each with its own user interface, clinicians and providers must consider easy-to-use platforms that allow older adults to log in securely and without complications.
Improvements in tablet and camera capabilities have made virtual visits more meaningful, Rose says, thanks to resolution levels high enough that a dermatologist could accurately assess a wound, for example.
Simplicity and visual quality also further the notion that virtual care is as effective and realistic as an in-person visit, ensuring older adults will use it when needed.

The Sun reports that there is drama between Robert Pattinson and The Batman director Matt Reeves on set – LaineyGossip
I mean, MORE Batman drama, since we know DC Films intends to have many Batmen running around, which provides its own, unique flavor of drama. But THIS Batman drama pertains to Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves The Batman, which is, maybe, not going so hot. Consider the source with a huge grain of salt, but The Sun reports that Pattinson and Reeves arent getting on, and that Reeves perfectionist tendencies have driven Pattinson to the breaking point. I dont 100% buy this, but The Batman HAS been a bitch of a production, affected by the first Coronavirus lockdown in spring 2020, only to shut down just days after Pattinson tested positive for the virus in the fall. I am sure it has been a stressful shoot for everyone, and if Reeves really is taking up to 50 takes to nail a shot, it COULD be trying to someones temper, and Pattinson has admitted to getting a little testy when directors keep going on physically difficult takes. Though it should be noted I do not think for one second Pattinson would actually punch anyone. At TIFF in 2019, Robert Eggers specifically mentioned Pattinson for his perseverance during The Lighthouses demanding shoot, and I got the impression everyone ended up liking each other just fine after making that difficult movie.
That doesnt mean The Batman might not be draining everyone dry, though. Its a matter of degrees. Are Pattinson and Reeves at a point where they cant work together? Or are they just exhausted, mentally and physically, from a shoot that wont end (still going! one year later!), and stressful pandemic conditions? There have been rumors throughout 2020 about Pattinson and Reeves not really meshing, most of which are about Reeves not liking Pattinsons Bat-physique. And here is where this whole story gets a little gross and weird to me. It is very possible things are not going well on The Batman, its been a helluva year and if the director and star are sniping at one another on set, okay, believable. But surrounding all of this Bat-reporting is an undercurrent of public disapproval of Pattinsons body that grosses me out.
Ever since production started last spring there has been consistent harping on whether or not Pattinson is big enough to play Batman. Nerds Online have consistently picked on Pattinson for not doing the massive body transformation weve seen other men undergo to play superheroes, such as Ben Afflecks beefy Crossfit Batman in the Snyder movies. But not everyone can achieve that! Just like not every woman can whittle herself down to a size 0 at will, not every man is built like Henry Cavill. Superhero movies have done a HUGE amount of damage to body perception in pop culture. For women, it has mostly been the same old get smaller, even smaller, disappear completely, now youre acceptable that we have always dealt with in visual media messaging. I have heard people call Scarlett Johansson fat because she doesnt have (much) visible muscle tone. ScarJo! Who is TINY! Is not FAT just because she isnt ripped like Jesus! But this is what superhero movies have done, theyve compounded a problem with body perception to the extent that even SCARLETT JOHANSSON isnt meeting the desired look to some.
Men are now experiencing this intense and unrealistic media messaging about their bodies. I know, I know, boo-hoo the poor men, getting a taste of what its been like for women for actual centuries. But steroid abuse among men who are not athletes is on the rise, and we are regularly treated to diet plans and workout regimens for superhero actors, the same way actresses have long detailed their weight loss plans to promote movies. But the superhero workout regimens never mention HGH, though I know of an actor who passed on a superhero role because he felt steroids would be an expected part of the regimen and he didnt want to do that, and another two who dropped the steroids because of other adverse health effects; their costumes are now padded to make them look bulkier. Eating disorders are also on the rise among men, and were not even getting into the ways the wellness grift targets men trying to bulk up.
So maybe its not the WORST thing in the world if we have a normal-looking Batman. And by normal-looking I mean: Robert Pattinson is very fit, he just isnt carrying fifty extra pounds of muscle. (Also, if he is physically capable of doing the work set before him, then hes fit enough for the role, whether you think hes big enough or not.) Pattinson is a lanky dude, his Batman looks lanky in that trailer, but some Bat-bros immediately started crying foul and saying hes too skinny and small to be Batman, body-shaming underwritten by the constant rumors about Reeves and Pattinson getting along. And those same body-shaming comments are circulating this most recent flare-up of rumors about Pattinson and Reeves. You want to gossip about what might turn out to be the latest nightmare movie shoot? Fine. But lets leave criticism of Robert Pattinsons body, and whether you think it looks realistic enough for a guy who dresses like a bat to fight crime in a fake city, at the door. Maybe Reeves and Pattinson arent getting along. Pattinsons body shouldnt have anything to do with that.
Read More..GM diet: Know all about the diet plan that promises weight loss in just seven days – The Indian Express
Among the many fad diets, a particular diet plan that has been getting attention is the GM diet.
GM diet stands for General Motors diet, which claims to help one lose weight up to 15 pounds or 6.8 kgs in just one week. Wondering how it works? Read on.
How does GM diet promise?
GM diet is known to have been formulated in General Motors Corp in 1987, to tackle weight and health issues faced by its employees. It was field-tested at John Hopkins Research Centre and then approved for distribution by the board of directors of GM Corp.
According to gmdiet.in, the diet plan works on providing simple nutrients to burn calories than adding further to your body, on a seven-day schedule which would enable weight loss, body detox and giving body cleansing benefits too. The diet claims to focus on eating wisely rather than starving.
GM diet menu
GM diet can be both vegetarian and non-vegetarian while the diet remains the same for both groups on the first four days, it changes as per ones food preferences on day 5,6 and 7. Heres a brief look at the diet plan:
On day 1, you can eat sweets and tangy fruits like melons, to keep you full for a long time. Other fruits include strawberries, apples, watemelon, and cantaloupe.
On day 2, you can consume all vegetables like lettuce, tomato, cabbage, onion, kale, artichoke, spinach, broccoli, and limit potato to just breakfast.
Day 3 consists of both fruits and vegetables. This is the day when your body starts to lose fat in chunks. Complex carbs in fruits help you keep energized and stay focussed too. Choose a salad, boiled vegetables and ample water to keep your body hydrated, mentions gmdiet.net.
On day 4, soup is recommended but more bananas and milk are to be consumed. 8 medium-sized bananas and 3 glasses of skimmed milk must be consumed over the day, as suggested by the website.
Day 5 is when you can have one item among chicken, fish, or beef. This can be consumed in two meals along with six tomatoes. Vegetarians can replace meat with cottage cheese or brown rice in addition to tomatoes.
On day 6, meat (or cottage cheese) and vegetables are recommended with no tomatoes.
On day 7, the last day, more fruits and vegetables are to be added to the diet.
Apart from these foods, GM diet focusses on drinking enough water about six to eight glasses each day.
Is GM diet sustainable?
This diet plan involves the consumption of low-calorie or negative-calorie foods which provide fewer calories than they take to digest, thereby promoting weight loss. Besides, it emphasises drinking water which helps detoxify the body. But like most other fad diets, experts are divided in their opinion about whether this diet plan is sustainable.
According to medicalnewstoday.com, the diet lacks essential vitamins and minerals that come with eating a variety of healthy foods daily. Besides, most days of the entire diet plan provide low amounts of protein, which, researchers argue, can decrease appetite and promote weight loss.
Moreover, the diet can only lead to temporary weight loss. Once the GM diet plan is over, it is likely that you would regain weight once you resume your normal diet, according to Healthline.

2021 Refresh: What’s a time-restricted diet? Exploring simple options to help you eat healthier – WKYC.com
Most resolutions don't last an entire year. But there are things you can do when it comes to healthy eating that can give you a quick 'detox.'
CLEVELAND Whether you admit it or not, most people have some sort of diet in mind when it comes to New Years Resolutions. But sticking to a new eating plan usually doesn't make it through an entire year -- or even a month. In our "2021 Refresh" series, we asked a couple experts what are some simple things we can do to just kickstart healthy eating?
I think the trend that I'm seeing is like a complete overhaul, says Cleveland Clinic Dietician, Kristin Kirkpatrick.
Every January, millions of people vow to lose weight or eat healthy. How long does it last? Research shows its 66 days on average.
So, how can we start small?
Number one, January is a great time to really encompass that kind of dry January mentality," Kirkpatrick says. "Even if it's just a week, if you go a week without having any alcoholic beverages, typically you can go two weeks three weeks.
She says also try to eat foods with three ingredients or less and you'll automatically ditch the majority of processed foods.
I also think frequency of eating is an easy thing to change and a huge detoxing mechanism, so if you think about the fact that if you take in a time-restricted eating approach and you say, 'OK, this week Im only going to eat eight hours every day and there's nothing outside of that time, nothing outside of that window.
Studies show time-restricted eating jumpstarts weight loss, helps lower cholesterol and improves type 2 diabetes.
The best diet out there is the one you will stay on long-term, and that's different for everyone. I wouldn't do well on a ketogenic diet, but a lot of my patients do. I think if you're looking in more general terms, a Mediterranean diet is always a really great approach because it does encompass still being able to have fats, still being able to have animal proteins in the form of chicken or fish and then it has a lot of other things like obviously fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

Resolved to lose weight? Heres how to succeed during a pandemic – WANE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Starting a weight-loss journey can be a daunting task, a steep climb where it is hard to see the end-result from where one is standing.
For those that have set a new years resolution of losing weight or improving their fitness level, that task is even more complicated by the ongoing pandemic.
Gyms, usually an outlet for people to work towards that resolution, are considered high-risk areas for spreading COVID-19.
There are ways to reduce that risk, however.
Scott Charland, manager of human performance at Parkview Sports Medicine, recommends wearing a mask if you go to a gym. Masks are not required under Gov. Eric Holcombs mask mandate as long as you are able to socially distance. When wearing a mask at the gym, Charland recommends wearing one made from cotton material.
Wearing a mask while working out may not be the most comfortable for some people, especially if they in the early stages of a weight-loss journey. Charland understands there is an adjustment period and urges patience.
Just like any exercise program that youre going to be starting around the new year, start slow, work your way into it, Charland said. Its a marathon, not a sprint. So take your time and let your body get acclimated to wearing that mask.
There are alternatives for those that are not comfortable with going to a gym at this time. A simple web search can yield several results for workouts that can be completed from home.
When working out from home, Charland recommends mixing in cardiovascular, strength and flexibility activities. Cardiovascular any activity that pushes ones heart rate activities could include going on a walk or doing stair steps. Strength activities may include push-ups, sit-ups or air squats.
Group workouts that are hosted in gyms have also gone virtual. This is an option for people who need a trainer or coach to keep them accountable when exercising.
Regardless of ones comfort level, anything is better than nothing. Charland points out that the health benefits of exercising do not come overnight. Even in the middle of a global pandemic, there are small ways for people to improve their physical fitness and work towards that new years resolution of losing weight.
Youre really investing in your health when you participate in an exercise program.

Resolved to lose weight? Heres how to succeed during a pandemic - WANE
What is the most common New Years resolution in Pa.? Hint – its not to lose weight – pennlive.com
Most people would agree that 2020 was a difficult year and most of us are hoping that 2021 will be better.
Along with the COVID-19 pandemic came job losses, working from home, toilet paper and sanitizer shortages, illness and death, loneliness and a myriad of other troubles.
Did you put on weight being stuck at home turning to chips and ice cream for comfort? Did you binge on Netflix because you lost your job? Did home-schooling drive you insane?
You arent alone. The job resources website Zippia.com analyzed Google trends to determine the most common searches related to New Years resolutions in each state.
The most common resolution in 12 states including Pennsylvania was - to seek therapy.
That comes as no surprise as many people faced mental-health challenges during a difficult year.
The second most common was weight loss.
Other resolution searches included dating, sleeping better, getting a new job, taking a vacation, saving money and reading more. Others of us want to make more money, take on weight training, quit drinking or meet new people.
Therapy was the top goal in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York and Tennessee.
We have to wonder what is going on on the West Coast where those seeking better sleep are in Oregon, Washington and Alaska and most of the people who want to read more live on the East Coast in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The exception being Arkansas.
