The Secret Coach: Witnessing the fitness of players during COVID – CalvinAyre.com

Players are suffering more muscle injuries than ever in the Premier League this season due to the shortened English football season. Its not only in the EPL, however, as the problem is just as rife in the Football League. In a season that has been truncated by COVID-19, what can the average manager do to prevent these happenings and lessen the risk while maintaining high levels of match fitness?

To find out, we spoke again to somebody who knows about football because they work within it. The Secret Coach knows plenty about players fitness, having helped players of various ages cope with the physical stresses and strains of the game we all love. Theyre a professional football coach in English football who will remain anonymous. The Secret Coach has worked with some of the biggest names in the game, been through the coaching badges and is currently part of the coaching team at an English league side and thats all were telling you. As ever, this week, The Secret Coach pulls no punches! They start by explaining to us exactly how it works at the top level.

All teams have improved sports science departments these days, crunching the numbers of players GPS and fitness data so there is a lot more help and guidance for managers, says The Secret Coach. Pre-season is a gradual build-up, with some players not at optimum fitness when the season starts due to international tournaments and holidays to allow for rest. This season, that has not happened, with minimal preparation and players thrown into lots of games. That robustness has not been built up over time.

The gradual process would usually have seen players catching minutes at intervals in a pre-season that allows them to build up to full fitness. Instead, Premier League players got four weeks off since the end of the preceding season due to Project Restart.

These are highly paid athletes in an amazing position who are being paid to do their hobby in effect, says TSC. But they are finely tuned athletes and like a Forumla One car that is finely tuned, the smallest imbalance can cause a breakdown! Managers get the green light from the S&C team and medical staff on players optimum fitness levels and they see who is showing signs of fatigue and might be prone to injury. Its then the managers responsibility to do with that information what they want you dont see the physio making subs! They might have their fingers crossed past the 60-minute mark, but they can only advise!

On Sunday evening we saw that Leicester City were no match for Liverpool on the night but one annoyance that came up for Foxes fans on social media is the apparent lack of training in the build-up to the game. The international break had a big effect on many teams, but were those left at home possibly at a disadvantage because Premier League fitness levels are so high?

Premier league managers do not get much time with players as a squad, especially those in Europe. They train on Monday , travel on Tuesday to play a European away game on Wednesday, then itll be a light session on morning of the game before they play the game, travel home on Thursday before rest and recovery or a light session on the Friday. Those players in European action will likely train on Saturday but not heavily due to another game on Sunday.

It sounds exhausting just hearing about it, but while players are fit as fiddles, TSC believes managers have had to adapt like never before this season.

Managers have to be creative in how they maximise their players training, especially for shape play and tactical work. Match preparation is difficult when they have players all over the place; thats why pre-season is key, there is a lot done in the analysis suite.

Fitness and squad depth are two massive points for discussion in the Premier League this year. How important does TSC think it will be in determining who wins the EPL title?

Squad depth is always an interesting one, they reply. The bigger clubs have more money to pay wages and fans might then argue they are better players, but everyone has the same squad size in the Premier League. You can only name a 25-man squad and as many under-21s as you want, so strength in depth is subjective.

When it comes to the two most successful sides in English football history, The Secret Coach is outspoken.

I look at Manchester United and Liverpool and think they could add one or two quality players with their budget not seven or eight average players just to have bodies. They should promote their youth to give them a chance, otherwise how do they know if they are good enough or not? I used to get frustrated when authorities got involved in fining teams for fielding a weakened team! Who says its weakened? If I rest Ryan Giggs and put in a youth player whos 21, whats to say he wont be as good as Giggs in the future? If I signed him as a professional footballer, he has a contract to play.

The Secret Coach has plenty of ideas to change this, including allowing Premier League Managers to add two more substitutes in the form of under-21 squad players to help protect players from being injured. At lower league clubs, though, life is very different to the Premier League. How bad do fitness levels get in the lower professional league in England and what can coaches do to help players who arent being paid a kings ransom to play?

Lower league clubs have more time, says TSC. There are less internationals, so player fitness can be monitored very closely. At a club Ive worked at, we had an excellent S&C team and medical staff. We had a fair share of injuries but the work they put in with the teamas a whole and individuals was awesome. Fitness work is not just a team thing the whole squad has tailored plans, with six players doing one thing, 10 players doing another and with pairs and individuals working very differently before they join up to play as a team.

Recooperation from injury is immensely difficult for any player, but in such a shortened season where there are no fans and the stakes are so high, is it more of a commonplace risk for teams to rush back players. Could the long-term effects be worse for players and, eventually, teams if the medical staff dont take over?

Ive experienced physios saying, Hes out for 3 weeks only for the manager to say to player in front of the physio If we strap it up will you be able to play? We now have so much data on players fitness and well-being that it would take a poor manager to ignore advice and data from the medical staff and rush someone back, although players will try. Some need reigning in sometimes to save themselves from further injury by pushing too hard to come back.

The best players are often either protected from injury by being rested or played when less than fit. But what is the best option?

Leagues are not won with 11 players today, says TSC. Theyre not superhuman and playing at the level they do, the physical demands can take its toll and you risk burn out, not just injury but when the body is stressed, the immune system is lowered so youre open to colds and other such issues. Just like an office worker who has five meetings and three reports all due the next day can end up ill at the end of the week, managers need to manage the workload of players so fans get to see better players being rested for certain games. You see it all the time, especially with older players look at Sir Alex Fergusons management of Ryan Giggs.

With COVID-19 forcing players into Zoom calls, personal fitness sessions from home and more, the Coronavirus pandemic has a lot to answer for, but could it have had positive effects on some players fitness?

With COVID, players have had to utilise the opportunities theyve had. Fitness can be done anywhere; you have so many personal trainers unable to get to gyms doing things online with clients and only have to look at how many people are now active after being allowed out to exercise in lockdown. Football players are no different.

With clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool both of whom lead the Premier League after the latest round of fixtures training their players on Zoom when lockdown struck, the clubs who think outside the box may yet be rewarded with the greatest prizes at the end of the tunnel.

How to Maintain Your Fitness Routine During the Holidays – Houstonia Magazine

Raise your hand if youve ever second guessed that second slice of pumpkin pie at Grandmas house after spending all day curled up on the couch looking like the actual potatoes she was peeling for the casserole. Now raise your other hand if you ate the pie anyways.

Its the holiday season, and every year, between the traveling, the general merriment, the sleeping in your childhood twin bed even though youre a grown adult, and the feasting, maintaining any sort of fitness regime falls to the wayside. And come January, when somehow even your stretchy yoga pants are too tight, the resolutions begin.

But how can we keep up some semblance of a workout routine during the holidays, even if were away from home? Just get up and do something, says Ida Clay, head coach of Orangetheory FitnessWest University.

My most important thing is to just move, she says. Even if its a walk.

And if youre used to the equipment of your local gym, there are plenty of household items lying around Grandpas garage that you can sub in, says Clay. Need weights? Try laundry detergent, a backpack filled with books, your carryon luggage, or cat litter. Are you the one doing the cooking? Do some arms curls with the cranberry cans before you make the sauce. Heck, just lifting the turkey is a workout.

But no matter what, Clay, whos been a coach with Orangetheory since 2017, says the main thing she encourages her clients to do is prioritize their wellness, no matter the time of year. I know a lot of times, people are like, January 1, January 1, she says, and Im going to say theres no day like the present.

We chatted with Clay about staying motivated during the holidays and how to work out anywhere, even Grandmas house.

Consistency. Staying committed. And I always talk about commitment to oneself. Whats your why? Why you showed up for yourself in the first place and letting that be your motivator to keep coming back.

One of the things I always tend to focus on is making sure that you make your health a priority. So yes, I have these parties; yes, I have the holidays, and we all sit down around the table and enjoy each others company and enjoy the food; but what are you do for yourself before that? How is self care something thats primary in your life? Because we cannot pour from an empty cup, and a lot of times, for mental and physical wellbeing, we have to fill up our cup first before we can pour into other peoples cups.

First and foremost, set up a plan. If I am going to somewhere else for the holidays, what is going to be my health and wellness routine thats going to keep me motivated and keep me feeling my best self? Is it waking up an hour early and doing some meditation and then going for a walk?

Find a buddy. Get someone whos with you where youre at. Say, Hey, come do this with me. Get the whole familybe like, Hey, before we start cooking today, lets all throw on some workout clothes, pull out the mats. Go toOrange Theory At-Home Workouts on YouTube, and lets get it done. Twenty to 30 minutes, done. Sweat, heart rate gets up, youre feeling goodokay, lets shower and start cooking. And then you have something to talk about, right? Youre not talking about other stuff, youre talking about how youre feeling. Youre feeling good.

Theres a good hamstring stretch: You would extend your right leg outthese are a good dynamic stretchflex your foot; reach down towards the ground with both arms, like scooping something off the ground; and then reach all the way up. I would do 30 seconds on each leg.

For the meat of the exercise, do some reverse lunges with torso rotations. These are just bodyweight exercises. Reverse lunge: Keep your legs shoulder-width apart. And then when you rotate, you want to take your chest away from your back leg, so rotate your chest over your front leg. And when youre in lunges, you always want to make sure your knee is stacked over your ankle and that youre going straight down, rather than leaning forward. Because anytime you go forward, you put pressure on your front feet, and that can eventually result in an injury.

Always stretch at the end. Cool down stretches: Lay down onto your mat or on your back, and do some supine twists. Bring both knees to your chest; circle one way, circle the other. Hamstring stretch: Bring one knee in, extend the other leg. Straighten your leg as far as you can. And then do some cross-body stretches with your arms.

I always like to end with the forward fold, and then rolling up, your heads the last thing to come upyour chin, both arms up to the sky. Big stretch, filling your with oxygen. Breath is so important, and so many people forget that during their workouts. And then you would exhale as you press the air down. And then big shoulder roll up, down, and back, and youre good to go.

So really realizing that when we commit this time to our health and wellness, were actually keeping ourselves healthy and preventing our immune systems from becoming weak. Theyre actually getting stronger. So as a result, our entire lives are going to be stronger. I would say health is wellness.

Dont make it a resolution, make it a commitment to yourself. And thats why I say theres no day like today. And dont wait until January 1.

Active Fitness and Physical Therapy hosts 12th annual Turkey Trot – WOAY-TV

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) Active Fitness and Physical Therapy hosted its twelfth annual Turkey Trot, but like everything else this year, in a virtual format. That means instead of having participants line up together everyone goes out and runs the 5K on their own and submits their times to the gym to tally the scores and announce the top three finishers.

The Turkey Trot has three options for participants to race with in the form of a run, walk, or a bike ride. Michelle Holly decided to run the 5K in order to try something new.

Im actually going to do the 5K, said Participant Michelle Holly. Im not a big runner, I do exercise a lot and come down here to the gym quite a bit, but its kind of fun to do something a little bit different.

Another participant was Amanda Davis who decided to walk the Turkey Trot this morning with her father along the running route which goes up Jones Avenue to Oyler Avenue, and then back down Main Street. She says there was little traffic which made the walk nice.

It went great, the weather was perfect, there wasnt much traffic it was really nice, said Participant Amanda Davis.

For many people, Turkey Trots are part of family tradition while other do it to support local organizations or simply just to get extra exercise in before the big dinner.

Well first its for a really good cause for the food pantry, I think thats a really good reason to do it, said Holly. Also its kind of fun, its a good way to get some exercise in and to get some activity in on a day when you know you are going to over eat and lay around for the day.

I usually do the Turkey Trot every year, said Davis. Plus it gives more room for turkey, deserts and all that other good stuff. It doesnt make you feel as guilty anyway.

Participants of the Turkey Trot made donations of non-perishable food to the local food pantry to help those in need this Thanksgiving.

Fitness industry wants Gov. Newsoms partnership as gyms told to close indoor operations – FOX40

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. (KTXL) When Placer County was recently downgraded to the purple, or most restrictive, tier of the states COVID-19 reopening plan, gyms were ordered to move outside or shut down.

Brandon Daniel, the owner of All the Way Fit in Roseville, kept his business open inside and said Tuesday he plans to keep it that way.

Have had thousands and thousands of people in my facility since March and nobody in my facility has tested positive during that time, Daniel told FOX40.

With sanitation and safety measures in place, Daniel said he doesnt believe gyms and fitness centers threaten the efforts to stop the spread of the virus and others agree.

We believe that we are causing a bigger issue by not letting people stay healthy by keeping gyms closed and the data supports that, said Francesca Schuler, the CEO of Stockton-based In-Shape Health Clubs and an advisory board member with the California Fitness Alliance.

Last week, the alliance sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsoms office asking him to work with the fitness industry to keep gyms open. Its teamwork Schuler said has been denied previously.

Schuler said her company has now been forced to lay off thousands of employees right before the holidays. Now, she is hoping for some empathy from the governor.

We want to partner, she said. We are in the health business, like, nobody cares more than us about healthy people. And so, whats disappointing is the lack of partnership.

For Daniel, he said some members have stayed away during the pandemic. But he also said most of those who work out at his gym see his defiance of closing as a blessing.

He added that if he did shut down, he could forfeit the business hes put his time and passion into for years.

We lose that momentum, he said. Theres a lot of business you can lose by shutting down for weeks or even months.

Only the counties in the states purple tier are being told to close gyms or move them outside. All other colored tiers allow gyms to stay open indoors but on a limited capacity basis.

Lotus Fitness to host a forum on women’s confidence on Dec. 1 – liherald

Two small business owners are working together to host an event geared toward womens empowerment at Lotus Fitness on Dec. 1 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The event, dubbed Create Confidence with Positive Habits, is an open discussion for women to come together as a community and encourage each other, said Samantha Trocchia, who will host the event with Lotus Fitness owner Ahmed Ahmed.

A lot of women feel unseen, Ahmed said. Theyre so set on taking care of everyone else that they dont have the time to take care of themselves, whether its at home with their family or with their boyfriend or their coworkers.

Ahmed, 24, a first-generation immigrant from Egypt, opened Lotus Fitness, on Hempstead Turnpike, on the border of East Meadow and Levittown, last December. Roughly three months later, however, he was forced to close by the coronavirus pandemic, and he didnt reopen until September.

For roughly a year before he opened the fitness center, Ahmed worked at New York Sports Club in Astoria, Queens, where he lives. Before that, he was a personal trainer at Stony Brook Crossfit while he studied business at Stony Brook University, from which he graduated in 2018.

What separates Lotus Fitness from Crossfit, however, is Ahmeds intention to help people incorporate fitness into their lives rather than having it take over their lives, he said. I opened it because I saw the effect it has on self-efficacy, he said. When you see your hard work turn into results, you could have the confidence to pursue any of your other goals. I believe that I could do anything, because thats what fitness taught me.

Ahmed recently met Samantha Trocchia through a mutual friend, and immediately discovered that they shared similar goals and aspirations, he said. Trocchia, 26, of Franklin Square, once pursued a career in the pharmaceutical industry, working in medical sales. I didnt feel I was helping people the way I could, so I worked my way out of that and into my own business, she said.

Trocchia grew uncomfortable with her role in patients lives, she said, feeling like she was selling medication on top of medication to cover up the symptoms of their illnesses only to have them medicated for the rest of their lives without actually recovering.

At the same time, she was having digestive issues, and couldnt find a proper diagnosis or treatment. She was misdiagnosed with a number of digestive disorders, and was told at one point that her small intestine was too small and she wasnt absorbing enough nutrients because of it a condition called short bowel syndrome. When that diagnosis proved to be wrong, her doctors told her that her condition was all in her head, or psychosomatic.

That was the turning point for Trocchia, and roughly three years ago she devised her own method of treatment. She cut dairy products from her diet, started exercising by taking boxing lessons and turned to essential oils, adding them to her tea or rubbing them on her stomach. Little by little, her method alleviated her symptoms and restored her self-confidence. She left her job, started taking entrepreneurship classes at Hof-stra University and launched her own business in naturopathic healing, dubbed the Radiant Essentials, which she runs out of her home and on Instagram.

Trocchia has used her business as a vehicle to become a womens empowerment advocate, and started her own blog during the pandemic. This will be her first time leading an event in person.

This is something totally different and out of my comfort zone, she said of her collaboration with Ahmed. Its something that Ive always wanted to do.

The event will not involve any fitness, except for an exercise in posture that Ahmed will lead. Its easy, but goes a long way, he said, explaining that good posture, like meditation, can improve self-confidence and reduce anxiety.

Registration for the event is free, and guests can sign up at Lotus Fitness anytime or online at https://bit.ly/360rtec.

Worthing Slimming World member wins national award, proving less able-bodied people can achieve long-term weight loss success – Worthing Herald

Natasha Bunby from Lancing has maintained an 11st weight loss for eight years, despite being in a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis.

She has received her trophy in the post ahead of the virtual national award ceremony on Saturday.

Natasha said: Never ever did I think Id see my name on this award. The reason I applied for this competition was because I wanted to fly the flag for disabled people. I wanted to show that less able-bodied people can too maintain long-term weight loss success.

I spend my life feeling different, especially when others dont treat me kindly. People often describe me as the woman in the wheelchair thats brave, always smiles, but behind that smile Im not always brave and thats okay.

People can often be cruel to those with a disability. Im often left out and I often cant join in, even when I want to. Winning this award made me feel like, as a company, we are truly accepting of everyone.

Natasha attends a Worthing Slimming World group, having joined in March 2011, wearing a size 28 and weighing 21st 5lbs.

She slimmed down to 10st 5lbs in 18 months and now runs her own groups in Littlehampton and Lancing.

She said: I still attend group as a member and soak up all the tips and inspiration. If my weight does go up one week, I know Ive got all the tools I need.

Since Covid-19 hit, every part of Natashas business has been affected and the ceremony itself had to be done differently to normal.

During lockdown, all Slimming World groups were suspended and as a self-employed franchisee, Natasha had to learn a whole new way of working to continue supporting her members and keep her business successful.

Slimming World says she has remained focussed and, through ups and downs, she has just kept going.

Natasha said: Since losing weight, Ive discovered an inner strength and courage that I never knew I had.

I hope to inspire people with disabilities and get across the message that even if youre not completely mobile, you can lose weight and change your life for the better just as I have.

Inbox: Will lighter Vlad Jr. break out in ’21? – MLB.com

TORONTO -- It's been a quiet week for the Blue Jays since they kickstarted free agency by bringing back left-hander Robbie Ray, but the club is expected to be aggressive in a market that could develop later than usual. Beyond trades and free agency, the Blue Jays also have some

TORONTO -- It's been a quiet week for the Blue Jays since they kickstarted free agency by bringing back left-hander Robbie Ray, but the club is expected to be aggressive in a market that could develop later than usual.

Beyond trades and free agency, the Blue Jays also have some in-house development to focus on that could take them to the next level in 2021 and beyond.

Here are your questions for the latest Blue Jays Inbox:

What do you make of Vladimir Guerreros reported offseason weight loss, and will 2021 be his breakout season because of it?-- Everyone

This weeks most common Inbox question will be one of the biggest storylines next Spring Training. For years now, the Blue Jays have wanted Guerrero to improve his conditioning, but the public discourse around this has focused entirely -- and unfairly -- on weight. This is about much more than the number on the scale, so while reports of Guerrero dropping weight and Instagram pictures of him looking trimmer are encouraging, theres so much more to this equation.

When the Blue Jays discuss Guerrero, they say theyd like him to improve his routines," and "routines" is the key word in all of this. The Blue Jays will need to see these changes carried from season to season, which the High Performance Staff and Guerreros own team are working on.

Beyond weight, much of the focus is on flexibility, which could help keep Guerrero on the field long term. Working on that flexibility alongside overall muscle health and strength will be easier for Guerrero when hes developed these routines and is working at a more consistent weight from year to year, but these all need to be considered together in a larger conversation.

Right now, the Blue Jays are happy with how Guerrero is approaching this. This is a multiyear plan that goes well beyond turning heads on Day 1 of Spring Training in February, but credit is due to Guerrero for an impressive start to the process.

Adding both Francisco Lindor and Trevor Bauer in the same offseason would be a stretch, but this highlights an important piece of the Lindor conversation.

If the Blue Jays were to pursue Lindor, Clevelands star shortstop who is expected to be available this offseason, it would take a significant package. Using the Mookie Betts deal from last offseason as a loose framework isnt a bad place to start. The Blue Jays arent looking for a superstar rental, though, and Lindor is entering the last year of his contract at 27. Any potential Lindor acquisition would need to lead to an extension, meaning there would be a massive financial commitment on top of the player acquisition cost.

The Blue Jays have five catchers on their 40-man roster in Danny Jansen, Alejandro Kirk, Gabriel Moreno, Riley Adams and Reese McGuire. There are tiers here, of course. Jansen and Kirk look likely to open the season with the Blue Jays, but Moreno will be an intriguing name to clubs seeking young talent behind the plate. As the clubs No. 8 prospect, Moreno could be used to aim high in a deal if the Blue Jays were to chase a big arm, while Adams (No. 22) could be a complimentary piece in a deal. McGuire, coming off a poor 2020 but still young and talented defensively, would still have some level of appeal, too. Major League clubs need catching depth more than most other positions, and the Blue Jays are in a position of strength.

When you look for quick climbers, its as much about their maturity and ability to handle new challenges as it is about raw talent. Austin Martin, the clubs No. 2 prospect, should burn through the Minor Leagues once he gets the chance. Simeon Woods Richardson (No. 4) should do the same, and its telling that the Blue Jays brought him to Summer Camp in Toronto at just 19. Infielder Orelvis Martinez (No. 7) is about to make the jump from young prospect to a name that Blue Jays fans are buzzing about, and it could happen fast.

The 2022 season might be likelier for Woods Richardson, depending on which opportunities are available in '21, but the Blue Jays have plenty of depth beyond their starting five. Another addition is expected, but as injuries pop up through the season, the Blue Jays should have some combination of Anthony Kay, Thomas Hatch, Trent Thornton, Julian Merryweather and TJ Zeuch ready to jump in. Thats a much better depth group -- with far more upside -- than the Blue Jays have had in recent years.

Martins timeline and his defensive position are tied together. Hes too important to this organization to run into a roadblock positionally, though, so I expect the Blue Jays to have him ready at multiple spots on the diamond. Third is where he took his first official grounders at Summer Camp, but this really gets interesting if the Blue Jays try him in center. Frankly, that long-term plan could depend on what the Blue Jays accomplish this offseason. As it stands, a 2022 debut is on the table.
