Avoid eating processed food to prevent being overweight

Weight loss: Here's a shocking piece of news. As many as four billion people are likely to be overweight by 2050. 1.5 billion of these people are likely to be obese, if the current global dietary trends towards processed foods continues. Experts from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) warned of health and environmental crisis of "mind-blowing magnitude" and said that the global food demand would increase by 50% by 2050. It was predicted that 16% of the population will be obese, as compared to 9% currently among 29% of the population who are overweight.

"The increasing waste of food and the rising consumption of animal protein mean that the environmental impact of our agricultural system will spiral out of control," said Benjamin Bodirsky, lead author of the study published in Nature Scientific Reports.

Time and again, nutritionists and health experts have advised to follow a healthy lifestyle as an effective way to prevent getting obese or overweight. Here are some tips that can help:

1. Eat homemade food for most, if not all of your meals. Home-cooked food is devoid of additional flavours, trans fat and other adulterants that are usually found in processed, packaged, junk and fast food.

2. Avoid following fad diets or diets that are restrictive in nature. They may help you lose weight in the short-term, but can cause nutritional deficiencies in the long-term.

3. Make sure your diet is well-balanced and diverse, and includes all food groups: carbs, protein, fats and fibre. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, lentils, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains on a daily basis.

4. Eat according to your locality and culture, and eat seasonal foods. This is an effective way to facilitate diversity in your diet, as recommended by celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar.

5. Eat small and frequent meals and practice portion control. Delhi-based Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal says that it can help in preventing unnecessary cravings and keep you satiated and energised throughout the day.

6. Avoid refined sugar in all forms. Enjoy festivities, celebrations and holidays but do not overeat. Stick to healthier sugar alternatives like honey, dates, coconut sugar and jaggery on regular days.

7. Exercise regularly and be physically active. Avoid long hours of sitting. For every 30 minutes of sitting, stand straight on both your feet for 3 minutes. Do moderate-intensity exercise for 30 minutes every day or minimum five days a week.

8. Make sure you sleep well at night. Not sleeping well at night or being sleep deprived can be problematic for you in several ways. It can interfere with your weight loss goals, increase your cravings and make you feel tired and fatigued all day.

9. Stay hydrated and drink lots of water and other hydrating drinks like lemon water or coconut water. Being hydrated is important to maintain electrolyte balance in the body. It also helps in preventing constipation and other digestion-related issues, and can also prevent headache and fatigue.

When diagnosed in its more treatable stages, patients may be eligible for surgery, which offers the best chance for controlling the disease long-term. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer is often found too late when surgery is no longer an option.

The key to early detection is being aware of risk factors and symptoms of pancreatic cancer. Since symptoms can be vague or not show until cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body, there typically arent any early signs.

Even once the cancer has grown, the most common symptoms can be subtle. These include: pain (usually abdomen or back), weight loss, yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice), loss of appetite, nausea, stool changes, pancreatitis, and recent-onset diabetes.

There are several established risk factors for pancreatic cancer, but the most important is cigarette smoking. Smokers are twice as likely to develop the disease. Other significant risk factors are obesity and environmental, including heavy exposure to certain chemicals such as petroleum compounds, solvents, dyes, and metal refining chemicals. Family history, diet, race, gender, age, diabetes, and pancreatitis can also determine ones risk.

Research studies have identified some genetic factors that may increase a persons risk for developing pancreatic cancer. This is especially significant if the individual has multiple family members who have had cancer at a young age.

Lifestyle changes and overall health approaches may reduce your risk including quitting smoking, drinking less, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Pancreatic cancer may cause only vague symptoms, but if you experience one or more of the above unexplained symptoms that are abnormal and persist, its time to see your physician. Remember, early detection saves lives.

Worryingly, many of us think of sleep like a bank overdraft. We can miss a couple of hours here and there on weeknights, say, and catch up by having a Sunday lie-in, right? Wrong! In fact, research suggests it can take up to four days for your body to recover from a single hour of lost sleep. So if anything, it's more like having an overdraft where you get charged 50 for going overdrawn by 10.

But heres the good news. When we get sick, we rely on our immune system to fight back against the infection and make us well again. Research shows, however, that lack of sleep damages its ability to do so. For example, in one study, researchers took blood samples from 11 pairs of identical twins with different sleep patterns. They discovered that the twin who slept least had the most depressed immune system of the two.

This occurs because sleep is when our bodies both produces and releases cytokines: a class of small proteins that play a vital part in the immune process. Without them, your body is less able to fight off infections such as a cold, flu or Covid-19, even if youve received a vaccine. So youre more likely to catch something nasty, and when you do, itll take longer to recover. Scary stuff.

Studies show that people who sleep less than seven hours a day tend to gain more weight and have a higher risk of becoming obese than those who get more time in bed. This is because the bodies of sleep-deprived people have lower levels of leptin, a chemical that makes you feel full once youve eaten, as well as higher levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger.

This effect is surprisingly fast acting. For example, one study found that one week of sleeping about five hours a night led participants to gain an average of two pounds in weight.

The good news is that it works both ways: increasing the amount you sleep can help you lose weight. In another study, 472 obese adults took part in a six-month weight loss programme. The researchers found that people who slept between six and eight hours a night had a greater chance of achieving their weight-loss goal than those who slept less.

A large body of research suggests that people who usually sleep less than eight hours a night have an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes (see this study for example). Thats because ongoing sleep deprivation means your body secretes more stress hormones, such as cortisol, which helps you stay awake. Unfortunately, this makes it harder for the hormone insulin to do its job properly in regulating our bodys blood sugar levels.

This creates a vicious circle with the effect we noted above, where poor sleep increases your appetite and leads you to eat more fatty and sugar foods. This too will mess with your insulin and blood sugar levels, leading to a double whammy when it comes to the risk of getting Type-2 diabetes.

Everyone gets crabby after a poor nights sleep. But the long term effects of continuous sleep deprivation can be much more serious when it comes to your mental wellbeing, causing or heightening conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Thats because sleep isnt just about renewing our physical body, its also about recharging our brains and sorting through all the complex emotions we experience on a daily basis. REM sleep in particular appears to be especially important to processing painful and difficult memories, gradually blunting their sting and preventing us from reliving them over and over again, at least to the same level of intensity. Lack of sleep, though, stops our brains from doing this so well.

The consequences of this can be wide ranging. For instance, one study found that sleep deprived people experience more negative thoughts, while another suggested they feel less grateful for their romantic partners.

Lowered sex drive is one of the less talked-about consequences of poor sleep, but its very real. Thats because, as we mentioned earlier, a lack of sleep leads to the release of cortisol, which reduces the production of testosterone production. (Although many people assume testosterone is just a male thing, its actually important to the sex drive of both men and women.)

One study, looking at 171 college-age women, found that an extra hour of sleep per night led to a 14% increase in the likelihood the women had sex the following day. The good news is that you dont need to have silly amounts of sleep to make a difference: those women who reported improved sex drives slept for an average of just seven hours 22 minutes per night.

To Your Good Health: The weight loss battle continues – Agri News

I am looking for advice on diet pills. I have tried everything. I eat well, go to the gym and walk, but my meniscus problem limits my walking speed. Since menopause, I have gained 30 pounds. I am sure there is something out there that will kick-start my metabolism. I am so depressed, and my doctor has no sympathy.

Difficulty losing excess weight is one of the greatest public health problems in industrial countries, and Im not going to solve it here, but Ill try to discuss principles of drug treatment for weight.

One critical issue is to look at any medications you are taking: Many can cause weight gain, and some, like beta blockers, often used for high blood pressure, are unrecognized by many doctors. Stopping medicines that predispose to weight gain is critical.

Depression itself is a predisposing factor to weight gain. Some people lose weight with depression, but my experience is that weight gain is much more common. Many anti-depression medicines cause weight gain. One, bupropion, commonly causes weight loss.

Among medicines specifically for weight loss, most work either by decreasing fat absorption or by reducing appetite. They dont really increase metabolism, with the exception of phentermine, which does increase resting energy expenditure somewhat and may be useful in preventing weight regain in people who have lost weight, for whom metabolism does often slow down.

Orlistat called Xenical by prescription, Alli over-the-counter prevents the body from absorbing some of the fat in the diet. The fat is then excreted through stool. This may cause many people to have gastrointestinal side effects, which are diminished when on a low-fat diet. Orlistat caused people to lose about 7 pounds more than placebo.

There are several drugs that work on appetite. Liraglutide is a diabetes medicine that has been found to be helpful in overweight people even without diabetes. Metformin is another diabetes medicine that is sometimes used for weight loss, although it does not have a Food and Drug Administration indication for this. Both of these diabetes drugs often have gastrointestinal side effects. Lorcaserin, or Belviq, is about as effective as orlistat, but with fewer side effects; headache was the most common.

Some weight loss experts use combination drugs, including phentermine/topiramate, or Qsymia, and bupropion/naltrexone, or Contrave. These have more significant risks. I dont prescribe these drugs, but I do refer my patients who are interested in medication treatment to a weight loss expert. Look for a doctor who is board certified in obesity management.

Its important to remember that medications are not a cure for being overweight. Once the medicines stop, weight is expected to rise, unless a person makes significant changes in diet and exercise.

I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it?

I dont have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection.

At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor.

Consulting a nutritionist or a dietician is the most helpful way to figure out these goals, but you can estimate it yourself, too.

Certified trainer, Brooke Taylor told the website some ways people can do this on their own.

While tracking calories on the road to losing weight, your aim is to create a deficit. You should learn the number of calories you burn at rest, which is your basal metabolic rate. Afterward, take into account how many calories you consume each day.

Having those numbers on hand, multiply your basal metabolic rate and your calorie consumption each by 7. Then, youll be able to change how many calories you eat and make changes to your workouts so that youll burn around 2,000 calories each week. Thats the goal Taylor provides to the majority of her clients.

As for how many pounds you should try to lose weekly, Taylor says a healthy goal is dropping one to two pounds. Her recommendations for burning 2,000 calories each week are exercising followed by shaving 214 calories per day from your diet. That amounts to 1,500 less calories in a week.

Still, its important to know that calories arent everything when it comes to weight loss.

Obesity medicine physician and scientist Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford told PopSugar that the quality of the foods we eat is important, so we shouldnt solely focus on a number (b)ecause I think its shortsighted . . . It doesnt give you much information.

Stanford recommends people consume foods that are filling, including vegetables, fruits, proteins and whole grains.

Rebel Wilson may have done Mayr Method for weight loss: what to know – Insider – INSIDER

Actress Rebel Wilson has lost a significant amount of weightin recent months after declaring 2020 to be her "Year of Health" and working with a personal trainer on her fitness goals.

She's also reportedly following a new diet called the Mayr Method, according to People. The plan is based on the ideas of an Austrian physician, Dr. Franz Xaver Mayr, developed about a century ago. It's now the basis of treatment at Vivamayr, a chain of luxury wellness and medical spas beloved by celebrities.

Experts have mixed feelings about the diet.

"I've been a clinical dietitian for more than 20 years and I've never had anyone come to me and say they've been doing this," Sue Heikkinen, head registered dietitian for the calorie tracking app MyNetDiary, told Insider. "It's not one of the popular ones, and maybe for good reason."

While it includes some good advice, such as eating more slowly and cutting back on sugar, many of its claims aren't supported by evidence and could in fact stall weight loss efforts, according to dietitians. Here's what experts say about the diet's rules and whether you should follow its advice.

Does it work?Kind of.

Eliminating distractions and focusing more on the experience of eating can be a good thing, according to Bonnie Taub-Dix, registered dietitian nutritionistandauthor of Read It Before You Eat It - Taking You from Label to Table.

Slowing down helps you to better appreciate the taste and texture of your food. This can make you feel more satisfied with your meal, and less likely to overindulge.

"Mindful eating is great idea whether you need to lose weight, gain weight or stay the same, I'd encourage it no matter your diet," she said.

The Mayr Method goes a step further, recommending that dieters chewing each bite of food at least 40 times to slow down the eating process and promote better digestion.

That's unnecessary and likely to be a nuisance, according to Heikkinen.

"Most of us do eat too quickly, but 40 times is a lot and counting that is likely to take away from your enjoyment of the food," she said.

Does it work? Yes, but not because of the reasons given by the Mayr Method.

The Mayr Method claims eating foods like fruits and veggies can help you lose weight by balancing your body's pH level.

There's no evidence this is true.The alkaline diet has previously been debunked since the body regulates its pH level naturally, and no combination of food can change that (nor would you want to!).

Swapping processed foods, sugary items, and red meat and replacing them with whole plant foods can help you lose weight simply because it can decrease calories while increasing the nutrients you consume.

"Eating more fruits and vegetables is always a good weight loss strategy," Heikkinen said. "If it's a way to get people to eat more of those, that's awesome, but it's not because of any alkaline effect."

Does it work? No.

Unless you're sensitive to either lactose (a sugar in dairy) or gluten, both Heikkinen and Taub-Dix said that there's no inherent benefit for weight loss if you swear off cheese, bread, and similar foods.

In fact, some of those foods can benefit dieters. Whole grains, for instance, can help you feel more full after eating, and cheese adds flavor, both of which lead to more satisfaction.

"It's not as if cutting out dairy or gluten is going to make your diet magical," Taub-Dix said. "This shines a light on how celebrities aren't setting good examples when they set their tables if they embrace restrictive diets with extensive do and don't lists."

Does it work?Maybe.

Experts are mixed about this one, since it really depends on the person. For people who struggle with distracted eating or stress-snacking, limiting food to mealtimes can cut out empty calories.

"I think this can be a good strategy for many people.Structure has a lot of value for people because it eliminates that struggle of should I eat or not," Heikkinen said.

On the other hand, small, regular snacks can prevent you from getting too hungry and overdoing it when you sit down to a meal.

"Successful diets include smart snacking," Taub-Dix said. "If you choose wisely, there's a good chance it helps keep your blood sugar stable."

Does it work?Yes, but it's not a "detox."

'Cutting out added sugar is a wise weight loss strategy, cutting out a source of calories without nutrients that don't tend to be very filling," Heikkinen said.

She added that "detox" is a pseudoscientific term that sounds more effective than it really is. And sugar isn't necessarily bad, particularly natural sources of sugar like fruit that are also loaded with nutrients.

"There's no one food that is the cause of being overweight. But it can be helpful and healthier to cut back on added sugar," Taub-Dix said.

Does it work?No, and this one could backfire.

There's some evidence that caffeine, in the form of coffee and tea, can have benefits for your metabolism. There's no evidence cutting back can speed weight loss, so it ends up being an unnecessary restriction for people who enjoy those beverages.

"For weight loss there's so many things people are deprived of, why take away coffee which is low in calories?" Heikkinen said.

The exception is if you typically get your caffeine in the form of soda or sweetened coffee drinks, or have a habit of snacking at the same time.

In this case, being aware of your caffeine habits can help you eliminate some sources of hidden calories in your diet.

Does it work?Definitely not.

In fact, the opposite is true. Heikkinen recommends taking sips of water or another healthy beverage between bites to help slow down your meal. And no evidence suggests there's anything wrong with eating fruits, raw vegetables and similar food later in the day, for digestion or any other reason.

"There's no reason to do this and I don't know where it comes from," Heikkinen said. "It's ridiculous to think that you can't eat a salad at dinner just because it's raw."

Does it work?Maybe.

There's some evidence eating early in the day can have a slight benefit for your metabolism.

And if you're eating a majority of your calories in the evening, you might benefit from spreading them out a bit more throughout the day. But for most people, this is a matter of preference.It's also possible to overdo it on this advice, if you're waking up to a heap of eggs, bacon, sausage and toast to start each day.

"It's good to think about timing your meals to when you're going to need the most energy," Taub-Dix said. "But a big breakfast can be unhealthy too. It's all about balance."

THERE are many opinions on how we should tackle the coronavirus until a vaccine goes public.

Some argue that we should just open up the pubs and the cinemas, abandon social distancing and put up with the consequences.

But we read this week about a chap in Wales who had to be held up at the funeral of his wife and two sons whod all died from the virus within days of each other.

And Im sorry but if we just opened everything up again and pretended nothing was happening, I fear wed be reading heartbreaking stories like that every day.

You then have those who want the Government to shut the schools and force everyone to hide under their beds. Im not sure the economy could survive that.

Then you get the loonies who say theres no virus at all and the whole pandemic is a plot designed by Boris, or the Chinese, or space aliens, to turn us into worker bees, or food, or robots.

The only thing you never hear anyone say is: I think the current government measures are working well. And that, of course, is because theyre not.

Theyre idiotic and no one I know is taking a blind bit of notice.

One of the suggestions Ive heard quite often is that we should lock up the nations old people, as they are the most at risk, so that everyone else can fill their lives with big nights out, casual sex and football.

But that wont work because whats old? Some people when theyre 70 can run up a mountain while others spend all day sitting in their inconti-panties, on a wipe-down chair, drooling. What might work, however, is locking up the other vulnerable group the fat.

Fatness can easily be measured. It can even be seen. So anyone whos obese is forced to spend all day doing star-jumps and sit-ups at home, until they are not fat any more.

Its easy to enforce. You just get the police to make people stand on weighing scales in town centres and anyone whos overweight is sent home.

This would cut the number of fatalities, save the NHS, address the obesity crisis which is plaguing the nation and cause the weak-minded who over-eat to get a grip.

Speaking as someone who is fat, I know that if I was sitting at home while my friends were in the pub or at the football, and that I couldnt join them until Id lost the gut, Id teach myself to survive on nothing but weeds and seeds.

And Id lose two stone in a week.

Yup, even the Toyota Prius will be confined to the history books.

This is great news for the mine owners in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, whose cobalt is used to make the batteries in electric cars. Its less good news though for the children who work there.

Its also not good news for Britains motorists because electric cars are eye-wateringly expensive.

I drove an electric Peugeot the other day that costs 10,000 more than the version that ran on petrol.

There are practical issues too because at present there are 30,000 charge points in the UK.

But when everyone has an electric car, we will need millions of the damn things. And where exactly is all this electricity going to come from?

At the moment, our wind farms and our nuclear and ordinary power stations can only just keep up with demand. So how will they cope when people need to charge up their laptops, their phones AND their cars every night?

The simple answer is: they wont.

Second lockdown: How to stay fit and healthy during the winter – The Independent

Following the first nationwide lockdown in March, people across the country revealed they had been struggling with their physical wellbeing; 48 per cent of respondents in a Kings College study said they had put on weight, 29 per cent had drunk more alcohol, and half reported feeling more mentally anxious about life generally.

The combination of pandemic-related stresses, the loss of normal routine and spending more time indoors, makes it harder to stay motivated to exercise, to eat well, reduce screen time and get enough sleep. But as we face a second lockdown - this time in the colder, darker months of winter - it is more important than ever that we dont fall into the same traps.

Of course keeping our health on the agenda should be a priority 365 days a year but with coronavirus in circulation - a virus that is more likely to cause serious symptoms to those who are overweight or with underlying health conditions - during the pandemic it is more crucial than ever to ensure we fortify ourselves against illness.

Regardless of your age or current fitness, this isnt just about quick-fix solutions, but using this time at home to address lifestyle choices and setting yourself up long-term. While no one would argue lockdown is an easy period, it could be the springboard to make positive changes going forward.

Exercise

Now gyms are shut and the nights have drawn in, getting out to move your body seems more daunting. But staying active is not only crucial for maintaining a steady weight but also for your mood too. The NHS says exercise reduces your risk of major illness, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and lowers your risk of early death by up to 30 per cent.

And this doesnt mean you have to become a fitness fanatic - just 150 minutes of activity per week for adults is beneficial. This doesnt need to be time set aside just for exercise (which can make it feel a daunting chore). Incorporate it into your everyday life - walk the longer way to the supermarket, get off the bus the stop before yours or go for a family weekend cycle.

The NHS says what you are aiming for is: To be moving quick enough to raise your heart rate, breathe faster and feel warmer. This level of effort is called moderate intensity activity.

Maintain a healthy diet

If, like many other Brits, you found you put on weight in the first lockdown you want to ensure you dont do the same again now. Not least because being overweight can increase your risk when it comes to Covid-19. But its easier said than done when being at home lends itself to an increasingly sedentary lifestyle and the cold weather just makes us crave filling carbohydrates.

First start by checking your BMI (body mass index) to see whether you need to lose weight - the NHS uses this as the metric for measuring weight in the population. You can use the free tool here to calculate yours. This will help you understand if there is a problem, and the scale of it.

As well as taking up exercise, the NHS has an accessible (and free) 12-week weight loss plan to kickstart your healthy eating. It promotes safe and sustainable weight loss and is designed to help you lose the pounds at a safe rate of between 0.5kg and 1kg (1lb to 2lb) each week. This is done by a daily calorie allowance of 1,900 for most men and 1,400 for most women. The plan is intended for adults with a BMI of 25 or higher.

You should also be aware of how much alcohol you are consuming and remember the recommended weekly intake is 14 units for both men and women - spread over the week.

Use the NHS Eatwell Guide to show you how to make a healthy, balanced meal. You should also be considering taking daily Vitamin D supplements during the pandemic (between the months of October and early March) as we are getting less sunlight than ever before - leaving many people deficient. You can buy vitamin D from most pharmacies, supermarkets and other retailers. Just 10 micrograms a day is all you need.

Stop smoking

If you smoke, stopping is one of the best things you can do for your health, says the NHS. The benefits start almost immediately (not just to your health but also your finances) and it is never too late to quit. A study by University College London (UCL) found over one million people in the UK had given up the habit in the pandemic.

Now you can be one of them. Download the free NHS Smokefree app, which allows you to track your progress, see how much youre saving and get support.

You can also find out about stop smoking aids - like nicotine patches. The NHS says you might find e-cigarettes, which are less harmful, can help you transition to quitting. If you can make it to 28 days smoke-free youre five times more likely to quit for good.

Keep in contact with your GP

Unlike in the first lockdown, the government is now actively asking people to keep their NHS appointments - unless your clinician cancels or says otherwise - and engage with your GP if you need help.

Dont wait in silence, especially for pre-existing conditions or if you spot any new symptoms that arise during lockdown.
