R Walk Fitness catching on The Famuan – Famuan

It is easier to say you want to go to the gym than it is to commit to leading a healthy lifestyle. However, one FAMU student is committed to a healthy lifestyle and helping others along the way.
Rylan Curtis is a pre-physical therapy major from Houston, and he is the founder of R Walk Fitness. His business is designed to help others on their healthy lifestyle journey physically and mentally.
A few years ago Curtis thought of the idea of his own fitness business but chose to push it aside in while he focused on himself. However when COVID-19 put America on lockdown he revisited the idea and started his training business at home.
The motto for R Walks is commit, dont quit, and get fit, which is inspired by Curtis journey into a healthy lifestyle.
In summer of 2018 Curtis developed anxiety, which put him in a bad space mentally and physically and also affected his consistency with working out and eating right. However, he decided to commit to working out which helped him gain his strength both physically and mentally.
Last summer he was able to train 30-40 people in his neighborhood working primarily with children in different age group sessions. He also held private sessions for adults and even helped a few adults achieve their goal in losing weight.
I saw how African Americans specifically were more adversely impacted by COVID-19 due to predisposing factors. The healthier your body is the more prepared you are to fight off this disease. Even though people who are healthy suffer from this disease, its better to live a healthy lifestyle, Curtis said.
He brought his business to FAMU and has made affordable training sessions available to students. Curtis understands that college students may want to live a healthy lifestyle but may be misguided on how to do so and not able to afford an expensive trainer.
Zachary Bell is a client and friend of Curtis and has been led by his friend to get fit.
Rylan has inspired me to take care of not only my mental health but my physical health, by letting me know that its never too late to reshape or reform your body, Bell said.
Another client, Tamerry Carry, has seen how Curtis has been able to impact the FAMU campus by partnering with different organizations with fitness events. Curtis also recently appeared on Beyond the Sky, a new talk show powered by FAMUs School of Journalism and Graphic Communication.
I noticed after Rylan put out his promo video for the business that FAMU organizations have had a lot more fitness events that Rylan was hosting. It shows that the students liked what they saw and wanted to be a part of it, Carry said.
Upon graduating Curtis would like to go to graduate school but also continue his business and continue to expand it by purchasing property and turning it into a gym. Curtis is committed to helping others get fit.

Anytime Fitness offers free memberships to aid Second Harvest – HNGnews.com
The Sun Prairie Anytime Fitness, located at 2071 McCoy Road, is collecting donations for Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin to help others in need this season. In exchange for a non-perishable food item, those who donate will receive a free 30-day membership.
Anytime Fitness has collected food for Second Harvest for the past seven years but has added the extra incentive to donate in response to the increased need for food assistance. Pre-pandemic, about 1 in 10 people in southern Wisconsin experienced food insecurity: they didnt know where they would get their next meal, or watered down their food just to make it stretch another day, or skipped eating dinner so their kids could eat.
Now the COVID-19 pandemic has brought that number to 1 in 8 people in Wisconsin facing hunger. Since March 15, Second Harvest has already seen a 56% increase in the amount of food they have distributed this year compared to 2019.
Recognizing the significant increase in need for food and knowing the role proper nutrition and exercise play in preventing disease and maintaining a strong immune system, Anytime Fitness owner Andy Gundlach said he hopes the free 30 day membership will result in more donations and more people adding exercise to their daily routine.
Last year members of Anytime Fitness of Southern Wisconsin collectively donated 3,996 pounds of non-perishable food to Second Harvest and local food banks. Helping others in need is good for your health, and my team is here to help members of our community feel their healthiest and happiest, Gundlach added. We hope to top that amount this year.
Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsins mission is to end hunger in southern Wisconsin; learn more at https://www.secondharvestmadison.org/. Donations will be accepted at the Sun Prairie Anytime Fitness and 31 additional locations in southern Wisconsin during November. Free 30-day memberships will be offered through Nov. 30.

Amazfit Band 5 v Fitbit Charge 4: Which fitness tracker should you buy? – Wareable
The fitness tracker options available right now are as good as they've ever been. If you want a mix of fitness tracking and smartwatch features in a band-style design, the Amazfit Band 5 and the Fitbit Charge 4 are two of the strongest options to consider.
The Band 5 comes in below 50 while Fitbit's flagship tracker sits a little closer to 100 price mark. So could you actually save yourself some money by paying less and going for Amazfit's tracker?
Wareable verdict: Amazfit Band 5 review | Fitbit Charge 4 review
We've comprehensively tested both of these top fitness trackers to help answer that question.
From design to how they'll monitor your health, we break down how the Fitbit Charge 4 compares to the Amazfit Band 5.
We've already alluded to the price difference, so how much will you have to pay for the Charge 4 and the Amazfit Band 5?
Let's get into what that money gets you in terms of a fitness tracker.
It's fair to say these fitness trackers offer very different looks on your wrist. With the Band 5, you're getting a TPU strap matched up with a 1.1-inch AMOLED display.
On the Charge 4, you're getting an interchangeable elastomer band and a 1-inch, monochrome display. Fitbit's tracker offers cleaner, straighter lines, while Amazfit opts for a design with a softer, more curved look.
There's no physical buttons on show on either tracker with Fitbit opting to build its button into the case. Amazfit uses a capacitive one that sits below the screen.
Our preference is with Amazfit on this one and find it more responsive to use than Fitbit's setup.
The Band 5 isn't cheap or tacky, but it's very much a sport fitness band. The Charge 4 meanwhile offers a range of high quality bands that let you dress up or down the look.
You don't get quite the same luxury with Amazfit's tracker, though you can pop the tracker out of the band and pair up with one of the other few TPU bands on offer.
With the displays, for us there's only one winner and that's the cheaper Amazfit. Its brighter, more colourful AMOLED screen is a significant step up from what you get on the Charge 4.
While you might get a screen that appears bigger in comparison on the Charge, it's pretty drab looking and hard to see in bright outdoor conditions.
Cheap picks: Best fitness trackers under 50
If you're hoping for something that's always-on, you don't have that on either tracker. You do have the raise to wake gesture support, which we'd say is more responsive on the Amazfit.
In terms of water resistance, it's level pegged. You're getting the ability to submerge them in water up to 50 metres depth and both let you track your activity in the pool.
So lets get into the nitty gritty of what these trackers are capable of and we'll start with the sensors, which unlock that unlocks that tracking.
With the Charge 4, you're getting an accelerometer to track indoor activity and things like step counts. It's also used to enable automatic sleep monitoring.
There's an optical heart rate monitor that can be used to provide data during exercise and in workout intensity maps for outdoor workouts. It's also used for continuous monitoring to help you monitor your current state of fitness and will also offer richer sleep metrics.
You're also getting an altimeter to track elevation like stairs climbed and you're also getting built-in GPS on a Charge tracker for the first time.
With the Amazfit, you're getting similar motion sensors to unlock similar features like step tracking and sleep monitoring.
There's an optical sensor that's used for continuous and workout-based heart rate tracking and enables SpO2 readings to measure blood oxygen levels. It also has connected GPS, so unlike the Charge 4, you need your phone nearby to track outdoor activities. It's also missing an altimeter, which means you can't track elevation with the Band 5 either.
In terms of fitness tracking performance, we'd say this is where the Charge 4 just about edges it from an accuracy point of view.
You do have, what we think, is a more reliable heart rate monitor for all-day tracking and step counts were generally reliable too. It also offers more accurate sleep tracking too.
While the Amazfit wasn't a terrible performer, we just think as a package, you're getting a bit more on the accuracy front. Particularly for heart rate and sleep.
For sports tracking, we think it's just about with the Charge 4 on this one as well, but the Band 5 is a decent performer for things like pool swimming and tracking indoor activities like indoor rowing.
Outdoor tracking is where it let itself down for us with its connected GPS support proving to be mostly unreliable for accurately tracking distance and other metrics. T
he Charge 4's GPS tracking isn't perfect, but if you're a casual runner and place less emphasis on streams of metrics, then it does a good job. Pool swimming is reliable too, though does stick to the data basics.
If you care about heart rate performance, we'd say the Charge 4 again offers more solid results compared to the Band 5. Whether that's all-day tracking or exercise tracking.
Both struggle with high intensity workouts where heart rate spikes and drops rapidly, but the Charge 4 performed better for us. You don't have the ability to pair up with external heart rate sensors here, so you reliant on those optical heart rate sensors built in doing the job.
In terms of health tracking, both offer women's health tracking features, guided breathing exercises and insights like resting heart rate. If you look at the hardware and the platform as a whole, We think Fitbit's package will offer you more on this front currently.
When you're not our cycling or sweating it out in the gym, both trackers offer the ability to be used like smartwatches.
They both work with Android and iOS and we generally didn't experience any noticeable issues on the pairing and syncing front with either devices.
With the Charge 4, you're getting the ability to view notifications and send quick replies when paired to an Android phone.
You've got NFC to unlock Fitbit Pay contactless payments, the ability to customise clock faces and you can control music playing on your phone. Annoyingly though, you can't control music during workout tracking.
With the Band 5, you're getting notifications too, though no ability to respond to them. You can check the weather, set up event reminders and music controls that you can access during exercise.
You do also have access to Amazon's Alexa smart assistant. That's a feature currently also available on Fitbit's Versa 3 and Sense watches, but not on the Charge 4.
Notifications on the Band 5 can feel a little more cramped, though things like weather forecasts and clock faces look great on that AMOLED display.
Alexa support works well too, though the responses are read out to you as opposed to piped out through a speaker. That's because you're only getting a microphone on board here.
So they offer different things from a smartwatch point of view. We'd say Fitbit does a better job with notifications, but we like the fact that the Band 5 lets you access music during workouts and its collection of clock faces are much nicer to look at.
So what kind of battery life can you expect from these trackers? With the Charge 4, Fitbit claims up to 7 days and 5 hours when using GPS. With the Amazfit Band 5, there's the promise of 15 days in typical mode, 25 days in power saving mode and 90 days in standby mode.
Based on our testing, we'd say these trackers are good for a week's worth of use if you don't want to start thinking about having to disable features to push things further.
The Band 5 is certainly capable of more if you turn off features like continuous heart rate and stress monitoring. If you can live without those, then you can certainly get closer to those 15 days.
With the Charge 4, it's stuck to the same battery life it offered on the Charge 3. If you factor in regular use of the GPS, that will have a noticeable impact on battery life.
Bottom line, they're going to be good for a week, but the Amazfit Band 5 is certainly capable of giving you more.
Should you buy the Amazfit Band 5 or the Charge 4? As we've mentioned already, these two fitness trackers come in at different price points. Though they both do offer a solid performance overall. Here's our take:
Buy the Amazfit Band 5 if... you want a fitness tracker with a great display, bigger battery life and does a good job of the fitness tracking basics. The Alexa support is a nice bonus, but only if you're going to make regular use of it.
Buy the Fitbit Charge 4 if... you want a fitness tracker that offers more reliable accuracy for fitness and sports tracking and heart rate monitoring. It's got more of those key sensors that make a better job of it than the Amazfit Band. It's arguably a nicer looking device even though it lacks the great screen you get on the Band 5.

Ruth Astle on Zwift, staying motivated and off-season fitness – 220 Triathlon
How have you managed to stay focussed this year?
On the whole it hasnt been hard to stay focussed this year, being my first pro year and knowing how much I have to improve in all three disciplines. Its also been nice, in some ways, to have a less intense year, and really be able to focus on recovery and do some more fun things, like gravel bike adventures.
Yet its been hard at points to remain focussed on training, when races kept getting cancelled and it wasnt clear if there would be any races, but overall the bigger goals Im aiming for, like qualifying for Kona as a pro, kept me going.
Have you struggled mentally at all?
There have definitely been some really hard days. Firstly, when Ironman South Africa was cancelled a couple of weeks before the race, Id just finished my big Ironman block and was about to start tapering, and was really up for a race to see where my form was at after a good winter block. That was quite hard to deal with mentally, especially as it then coincided with lockdown so the ability to socialise and train with friends was also taken away. To cope with the bad days I try and think about the positives, like being able to race a couple of British local races supported by the PTO, or the fact that I was able to keep swimming through lockdown, or just the fact Ive longer to make improvements before racing! But I think its important to also recognise that there will be tough days, and not to feel like you have to be positive all the time.
Has your training suffered?
My swimming was definitely impacted by not being able to swim with a group. I can push myself much harder swimming with a group, and I also found it harder to concentrate on my technique in the open water. Other than that, though, I think there were actually many benefits to doing a few different things, and not having so much intensity for a long period.
Has you managed to use this year to work on any weaknesses?
Ive been trying really hard to work on my swim, which has definitely been improving through increased volume and focus on technique.
Has there been any good points from 2020?
Theres been lots of good points this year getting into gravel biking and exploring some amazing parts of the UK. Also finding a new group of training partners around Yorkshire has been great, especially the group of Masters swimmers.
How have you found the journey from age grouper to pro?
Being able to reduce my corporate job to 14 hours a week has been the biggest positive, in terms of giving me time to get decent sleep every night, and having proper recovery time between sessions. Its also allowed me to increase my training a bit, and not cut out some of the gym sessions, like I often used to.
Yet its not been the ideal year to try and become a professional triathlete with all races in the middle six months being cancelled, and therefore no way of trying to get into the PTO ranking to benefit from the financial support they offer. Its also tough going from being the best [age-grouper] in the world to being very average [as a pro], and also realising how much more my swim needs to improve to compete at a professional level. Its also been a lot harder to secure sponsorship without having pro race results to show.
How much did the Zwift Academy help you last year?
Zwift Academy played a huge part in my successful Kona race last year, from having all the best equipment to use, to having the most incredible support during Kona week. I also really enjoyed being part of a team, and having other people to follow and support throughout the year and also in Kona. As Zwift has always played quite a large part in my training, particularly as an age grouper, it was nice to see more about how they develop the platform and behind the scenes.
The Academy is 100% worth applying for whether or not you think you have a reasonable shot of getting onto the team as having some sessions to focus on and people to do them with is really motivational.
[For those who dont know the Zwift Triathlon Academy began life in 2018 as an offshoot of the Zwift Academy program, which aimed to identify under-the-radar cycling talent using the virtual training environment of Zwift. And the end goal of the Zwift Triathlon Academy? To propel triathletes to success at the pinnacle of multisport: the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
To be in with a chance of selection each Zwifter has to complete six bike workouts, four run workouts, and one bike and one run race to be in contention. The performance data crunched before being paired with swim data and race results.
The successful applicants will join probably the best-supported age-group triathlon team in history, complete with the greatest gear, racing support and mentors.]
How are you approaching the off season this year?
Im not sure Ill have an off-season as such, as I have Ironman Florida in November and Challenge Daytona in December, so its going to be a busy couple of months. Ill probably do a bit of bike touring post-Daytona and a couple of weeks of doing non-structured training. Having had a few weeks of doing different things this year, I dont feel like I need a huge break.
What sort of shape are you in?
At the moment Im in peak fitness for the Ironman, and will feel pretty good going into the off-season.
What advice can you offer age groupers going into the off-season?
My main advice would be to be kind to yourself and use the time to do some of the things you wouldnt usually with a jam-packed race season, whether that be different types of training, or spending more time with friends (if possible!).

How to buy and sell fitness equipment amid COVID-19 – Los Angeles Times
Kyle Bennetts beat-up, 10-year-old Giant Faith mountain bike sat in his garage unused for months. The industrial designer from Santa Cruz paid $450 for it a year before and had thoroughly thrashed it. So he put it up for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
In one hour, his post got 60 replies.
Perhaps even more surprising? His asking price was $600.
The bike was gone in two hours, he says. A guy drove 100 miles and handed me cash, with no bargaining. But if Id been patient, I easily could have gotten $1,000 for it. People were bidding. In the pandemic, people post bikes for outrageous prices and are getting them.
Today, with gyms mostly closed due to the pandemic, people are desperate to stay fit. But they cant get new bikes and fitness equipment. Bike shops are sold out. Buying new dumbbells and weight benches is practically impossible.
The solution: Go online and buy and sell used stuff.

Cleaning out your garage has never been this lucrative.
You know that old beach cruiser with flat tires hanging in the rafters that you couldnt dump for 50 bucks? Now hose it off, pump the tires, shine it up with Pledge and get $250 for it!
If youve got old dumbbells and weight plates lying around, you may be sitting on a gold mine. The going price of $1 a pound jumped to $3 a pound or more when the gyms closed, according to Anthony Duke, a PE teacher and football coach from Murrieta, who has become a weight equipment expert in the last three months while buying and selling on OfferUp.com.
Done right, that old $10, 10-pound dumbbell will now get you $35, he says. Old weights I bought online for $50 Ive sold for $500. Two 25-pound bumper plates which have the rubberized coating that you can drop on the floor got me $900. The trick is making it look as good as possible.
Duke picks up discarded weights anywhere he can other online sellers, the city dump, trash cans, the dank corner of garages at estate sales. He paid 20 cents a pound for weights dumped by the Yorba Linda Fire Department. Then the refurbishing begins. He soaks them in vinegar, scrubs with a steel brush and S.O.S. pad to remove rust, spray-paints them black and uses a fat sharpie to paint the raised letters and numbers white. Hell reupholster $150 weight benches and sell them for $500.
The same strategy works for bikes. Dukes next-door neighbor Stephen Nelson, who was a noncyclist in February, turned himself into an expert rider and mechanic during the pandemic buying, rehabbing and selling a dozen mountain bikes and beach cruisers on OfferUp.com and LetGo.com.
Used bikes are the new new bikes, says the fitness coach. Ill buy beach cruisers for $50, clean them, touch up the paint, put on matching grips, shine up the rims and sell them from $350 to $400. A legacy product like a GT Performer BMX bike with mag wheels from the 1980s can go for $1,500 or more.
Mountain bikes can be particularly lucrative. Nelson bought a Lapierre full-suspension for $900, tuned it up, replaced a broken brake lever and sold it for $1,750. A crummy Trek full-suspension from the early 90s went for $800. His biggest score was a thrashed Pivot 429, which retailed for $7,700 new. He paid $1,200, cleaned it with a high-pressure hose, spent $350 on new handlebars, grips, a rear wheel and a seat, touched up the black frame and derailleur with model paint, and sold it for $4,000 four days later.
Common sense dictates the best marketplace deals, say Duke and Nelson. If youre looking to buy or sell, here are some tips from the experts:
If youre selling
Spit and polish: Clean gear sells for higher prices.
Think Instagram: Well-staged pics with a clean background fetch more. Shots in a dark corner of your garage make it clear you just want to dump it, says Nelson.
Meet the buyer in a public place. I like to meet them at a Walgreens so they can access an ATM, says Duke. This also protects your privacy.
Accept Venmo, Zelle and cash. (But maybe dont walk away with too much cash, if you know what we mean). Beware checks and credit cards.
If youre buying
Try before you buy: If possible, see the product in person before you make an offer. Avoid committing to a price without seeing the item so you can negotiate honestly if you spot flaws.
Gauge seller motivation: Buyers can score great deals by scrutinizing and lowballing quality gear that has been poorly staged.
Consider how youll pay: Some sellers will accept only Venmo or Zelle. But if they insist on cash, perhaps consider meeting in a safe and very public place.
Schmooze: To stand out from other buyers, I compliment the seller, says Nelson. Ill write, Ive been looking for one of these for sooo long. Wow, I love that color and that hydraulic seat post you put on it. That way, they feel youll provide a good home for it and tend to go easy on the price.

Fitness Facts: The story behind Movember – GCU Today
By Jo GottNurse Practitioner, Canyon Health and Wellness Clinic
No that is not a typo!
In November 2003, two men were drinking beer at a bar in Australia. They decided to start growing moustaches to raise money for one of their moms, who had breast cancer. (A mo in Australia is short for a moustache.)
From that humble beginning, Movember is now a worldwide event to raise awareness of mens health. There even is a Movember Foundation, which encourages donations for this cause.
Movember focuses its charitable contributions on four mens health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, suicide prevention and physical inactivity.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in middle age and older men. It usually grows slowly and is initially confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause serious harm.
However, while some types of prostate cancer grow slowly and may need minimal or even no treatment, other types are aggressive and can spread quickly. There is a blood test called the PSA (prostate specific antigen) that can screen for prostate cancer. If a man has a relative with prostate cancer, this screening should start at age 45. Otherwise, men may begin this screening at 55.
Testicular cancer is a rare type of cancer found in young men between the ages of 15 and 35. This cancer is very treatable. Every young man should be performing monthly self-testicular exams (similar to women performing self-breast exams). Signs and symptoms of testicular cancer may include:
The suicide rate for men is 3.5 times higher in men than women. White men in middle life are the group most likely to use lethal weapons to commit suicide.
However, a study in 2019, in The Journal of Mental Health found that stronger social connections can reduce the risk of suicide. That means more men talking about stuff that really matters.
Click here to find tools that can help men talk with men about mental health issues and suicide-prevention guidelines. In this day of COVID, many of these talks occur virtually.
Finally, the most recent focus on Movember is on mens inactivity. Research abounds that having an active lifestyle can prevent many diseases in both men and women. An active lifestyle can play a part in preventing obesity, heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Some Movember articles talk about the Movember Movement to encourage physical activity.
