How Mental and Physical Fitness Affects Cancer Treatment
People who have cancer may wonder if diet and exercise is still a priority for their health. The short answer is: absolutely. In fact, it may be more important than ever for patients well-being.
In terms of cancer, oftentimes patients feel that they dont have any control over any part of their life and thats not true, Dr. Sairah Ahmed, associate professor in the division of cancer medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, tells SurvivorNet.
On the contrary, she says, diet, exercise, and stress control are extremely important when going through cancer therapy, as well as once youre done treating your cancer and trying to get back to the rest of your life.
Dr. Ahmed tells SurvivorNet that none of the gimmicky diets are useful for cancer-fighting. Instead, the goal is simply to consume nutritious foods. Im asked about keto diets, alkaline diets, no-sugar diets, she says. Often I will tell patients there is not any one diet that has a better potential to keep their cancer away. Theres no data that shows that any of those help to treat cancer any better.
But its important, she says, for people with cancer to avoid losing weight during chemotherapy. You want to have a moderate diet where youre including lots of fruits and vegetables but youre still eating fat and protein and you want to maintain physical exercise, she says.
Dr. Ahmed explains that keeping as fit as possible can help people with cancer as they prepare for treatment.
The more physically fit you are going through your cancer treatment, the less side effects youll have and the faster youll get back to your normal quality of life, she says.
Far from just physical fitness, Dr. Ahmed emphasizes the importance of emotional strength both for patients and their loved ones. Stress control is often something that is not talked about and is not given much weight, but there is a lot of stress, both in terms of the patient whos going through cancer, as well as the family who has to support that patient, she says.
Of course, there are health worries. But there are so many more challenging factors to tackle, too. Theres financial stress, theres emotional stress, and being able to deal with that as well as talk to professionals when you need it, is very important, she says. Staying on cancer treatment is the one thing that will help to cure your disease, and if you are so sad or so overwhelmed that that doesnt happen, then youre actually going to compromise your cancer treatment.
She recommends preparing for stress and seeking professional support if needed as a key piece of preparing for cancer treatment.

It is not without reason that wheatgrass is considered to be a wonder ingredient. Even a little quantity of wheatgrass is rich in vitamins A, C, E, K and even B6. Apart from these, it also contains traces of several essential minerals and is dense in micronutrients and phytochemicals.
Wheatgrass is the leaf that sprouts in the common wheat plant, known as Triticum aestivum. Wheatgrass has always been used as a food, drink, and even recommended as a dietary supplement. It is grown in the temperate regions throughout the world and even in India, especially in the Himalayan region. It is a one-stop solution to all your nutrient deficiencies, and also has several benefits, says Gupreet Singh, Managing Director of Jivo Wellness.
Below, he lists some benefits; check them out:
1. Rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants are important to protect our body from the free-radical and also help in preventing cell dying, cancer, accelerated ageing and chronic inflammation. Wheatgrass is rich in antioxidants, thereby making the body healthier, stronger and better.
2. Immunity booster
Wheatgrass contains 17 different types of amino acids, numerous antioxidants and is home to a lot of essential vitamins. Consuming wheatgrass is directly related to boosting your immune system. It makes your body stronger from the inside and accelerates healing. Thefibre content stimulates digestion.
3. Good for digestion and detox
Wheatgrass has a very high fibre content which is directly related in managing digestion and fight piles, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. It is usually recommended to drink wheatgrass juice in the morning to enable a full body detox. The antioxidants present in wheatgrass cleanse and rejuvenate the body for its better function.
4. Low-calorie content and a good source of protein
Wheatgrass has negligible calorie content and is also a good source of plant-based protein. If you are looking for vegan options to get your protein content, wheatgrass can be a good supplement to start with. The low-calorie content also helps in managing cholesterol.

5. Contains chlorophyll which helps in building haemoglobin
Since wheatgrass is the first and freshly sprouted leaves of the wheat plant, it contains chlorophyll in good amount. Chlorophyll is a great source to stimulate and accelerate the growth of red blood cells which in turn increases the haemoglobin levels. Anaemic people, menstruating population, women in menopause can also look at this alternative to regain the lost haemoglobin naturally and effectively.
How to consume it?
Wheatgrass can be consumed directly in the form of a tablet or juice. However, the best way to consume it is in direct concentrated form as a shot or mixed with other ingredients to make juice. Since wheatgrass has a very overpowering smell and taste, people refrain from drinking wheatgrass juice. But you can always opt for alternatives and get your dose of this superfood.

Dr Richard Freeman to face renewed suggestions that he ‘topped up’ a rider with testosterone – Telegraph.co.uk

Dr Richard Freeman will face renewed suggestions on Tuesday that he topped up a rider with testosterone, his barrister told a medical tribunal on Monday. The former Team Sky and British Cycling doctor can also expect to be cross-examined regarding medical data relating to a Tour de France winner, Mary ORourke warned.
Freemans long running fitness-to-practise tribunal, which first started in February of last year, resumed in Manchester on Mondaybut did not make much progress as Freeman struggled to gain access to an Apple laptop.
Freeman, who is accused of ordering testosterone to the national velodrome in 2011 knowing or believing it was intended for a rider, accompanied his legal team and a British Cycling lawyer to a downstairs room at the MPTS tribunal building in Manchester with the computer in question. But they failed to switch it on, apparently due to a faulty power lead.
Although a working lead was later found, ORourke said she would prefer it if her client could have time to study the contents of the computer and requested that the hearing be adjourned until this morning, adding that she was becoming concerned about Freemans mental health.
There was an incident downstairs where he tried to take that laptop, put it in his own bag and walk away with it, ORourke told the tribunal. Mr Eastwood [Freemans solicitor] had to intervene. I am worried about him.
Freeman - who has had one of his laptops stolen, admitted to destroying another, and said he was unable to access the hard drive of a third - denied he had tried to take this latest laptop with him. I didnt snatch the bag, he said. I put it in the travelling case it came in because I was frustrated. I was going to take it away and charge it myself.
Freeman denies he has ever doped a rider. He claims he ordered the testosterone in 2011 to treat former Team Sky and British Cycling coach Shane Suttons erectile dysfunction. Sutton denies he has ever suffered from that condition.
Freeman became exasperated on Mondaywhen it was suggested that the hearing be adjourned for the day, adding that he was happy to continue. But his lawyer intervened. I am convinced that it is in Dr Freemans best interest not to answer any questions this afternoon because of what I witnessed.
The laptop allegedly contains riders confidential medical records. ORourke told her client he could expect to be cross-examined by the General Medical Council, which has brought the case, about one rider whose testosterone levels jumped from 3.4 to 7.2 and about a Tour de France winner.

Your libido is also commonly referred to as your sex drive its your emotional and mental desire for sex.
Your libido is individual to you and varies widely between people. What you experience as normal libido might be higher or lower than what somebody else experiences.
A number of factors influence your libido, such as:
Some people worry that their libido is too high. A high libido is generally not a concern unless its having a negative impact on your life or relationships.
If your high libido libido is disrupting your life or results in sexual activity that feels out of your control, it may be a sign of hypersexuality or what has traditionally been referred to as sex addiction.
Read on to learn more about the specific factors that influence your sex drive and what you can do to lower it.
First, its important to know exactly what your libido is its simply a term for your desire for sexual activity.
Once you engage in sexual activity, your body goes through arousal physical changes to prepare for sex. Heres what happens to your genitals during this stage:
Like other animals, humans need to have sex to have children. Our sex drive is deeply rooted in our biology as a way to encourage us to reproduce.
Your libido is individual to you, ranging anywhere from having no desire in sex to thinking about it frequently. But unless your sex drive is causing problems with your relationships or in your life, its essentially normal.
Biological, psychological, and social factors all play a role in determining your libido, including:
Many factors can influence your libido. If you think you may have a hormone imbalance, its a good idea to visit your doctor. Hormone tests may be able to provide insight on whether your high libido has a physical cause.
Changes in your sex hormone levels can influence your sex drive and can easily be measured with a blood test. Your doctor can also screen you for other conditions that may increase your sex drive.
If you feel that your libido is too high and having a negative impact on your life, here are a few ways you might be able to manage it.
Some research suggests that there are some dietary changes you can make that may have an effect on your libido. But many practical dietary changes you can make to lower your sex drive may compromise your overall health.
Aphrodisiacs are foods or medications that increase your libido anaphrodisiacs are the opposite. Theyre foods or medications that lower your libido.
A variety of herbal remedies have been used over the years for their anaphrodisiac properties, but theres little to no research to support the use of most of these herbs.
Theres some evidence that consuming licorice may lower testosterone levels, but more research needs to be done to examine the magnitude of its effect and safety.
Soy has also been claimed to lower libido in men by lowering testosterone. But at this time there are no conclusive interactions between soy and testosterone levels or libido.
One study found that women who followed the Mediterranean diet had the lowest levels of sexual dysfunction. Theres no research to definitively prove if this diet lowers your sex drive without compromising your health.
People with nutritional deficiencies often have low sex drives and experience sexual dysfunction. See your doctor if any nutritional changes you make result in sexual dysfunction.
If your doctor doesnt suspect that your high libido has a physical cause, they may recommend that you seek therapy or counseling.
Speaking with a therapist can help you uncover reasons that may be triggering your experience of high libido and help you learn techniques to manage it.
Therapy sessions can come in many forms, including one-on-one, family, or group. Its up to you to decide what youre most comfortable with when it comes to discussing your sex drive.
If youre currently in a relationship but not satisfied with your sex life, you may want to discuss this with your partner to come to a mutual consensus as to how sex can be fully satisfying for both of you.
If youre not currently in a sexual relationship but would like to be, be transparent with your potential partners about your expectation in a sexual relationship and communicate openly about what you do and dont like.
In some cases, your doctor may recommend medications to reduce sexual urges, including:
If youre currently on medication, you may want to talk to your doctor to see if your use of prescribed medications may be influencing your sex drive.
Cocaine and methamphetamines are two illicit drugs that can increase your sex drive, and reducing their use can help lower your sex drive.
Quitting these types of drugs can be difficult by yourself, but there are a number of support groups and services available for you.
Call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations National Helpline at 800-662-4357 for treatment referral if youre ready to seek help for your drug use.
Whether youre in a long-term or casual relationship, work together with your partner to make sex fulfilling and consensual for both of you.
Here are some tips:
A high libido isnt an issue until it starts negatively impacting your life or relationships.
Compulsive sexual behavior, sometimes called sex addiction or hypersexuality disorder, refers to sexual behavior that disrupts your life.
Here are some signs that you may be experiencing compulsive sexual behavior:
Some questions you can ask yourself to judge if you may have compulsive sexual behavior include:
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may want to see your doctor. Your doctor can perform tests to determine if your high libido has a physical cause or if it may be psychological.
If your doctor suspects that your high libido is caused by psychological factors, they may recommend that you talk to a therapist or counselor.
You can also visit your doctor if you feel your sex drive is too low. They can help you determine whether your low sex drive is caused by physical or psychological causes.
Your libido is another name for your sex drive. Your libido is individual to you, and whats normal for you may not be normal for somebody else.
Generally, a high libido is only a concern if its causing issues with your relationships or life. Talk to your partner, your doctor, or a counselor if your high libido is keeping you from having sex life you want.

Foods that help improve libido (i.e. sex drive) are known as aphrodisiacs named after the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. A certain nut contains the key mineral that may get your juices flowing.
Medical News Today note how the mineral zinc can help "regulate levels of testosterone" the male sex hormone.
The pine nut, for example, contains high levels of zinc, which could boost your libido.
Harvard Medical School confirmed that testosterone is responsible for a person's sex drive in both sexes.
"As men age, testosterone levels drop very gradually, about one percent to two percent each year," stated Harvard Medical School.
Symptoms of testosterone deficiency in adult men include low libido and impotence (the inability to achieve an erection).
For women, low testosterone levels may lead to decreased libido, poor concentration or depression.
Dietician Maggie Michalczyk said: "Pine nuts contain about 6.5 grams of zinc per three-ounce serving.

For their five-month experiment, the researchers restricted access to dietary zinc intake.
The researchers found that dietary zinc restriction in healthy, young men was associated with a significant decrease in serum testosterone after 20 weeks.
In addition, nine elderly men (on average, 64 years of age - plus or minus nine years), were found to be deficient in zinc at the beginning of the trial.
These men, in particular, were supplemented daily with 459 mol/d of zinc for six months.
Relate the relationship people charity highlights the important of your lifestyle in increasing sexual arousal.
This includes keeping physically fit by exercising, staying hydrated (by drinking two litres of water daily) and managing stress.
Other noteworthy factors include getting enough sleep, and cutting down or not smoking at all.
To keep things more interesting in the bedroom, the charity also adds that "having fun" could be the way forward.

Why bald men might be more susceptible to severe COVID-19 – 9News
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
The COVID-19 virus could be more prevalent in bald men due to factors linked to testosterone levels, new research has shown.
Testosterone produces a hormone called dihydrotestosterone which is responsible for balding.
The same hormone could also make people more susceptible to COVID-19.
"In terms of baldness, studies in Spain shows that bald men were over represented in terms of having severe outcomes of COVID," infectious disease expert Sanjaya Senanayake told Today.
"That might sound weird but there is a biological basis for it because bald men have a high levels of dihydrotestosterone which incidentally helps COVID get into cells."
A converse study conducted in Italy showed men with prostate cancer in hospital who were taking an anti-testosterone for cancer were four times less likely to get infected.
People with certain blood types may also be more susceptible to having severe symptoms if infected with COVID-19.
"With blood groups it looks like blood group O is more protective against COVID and A is more severe," Prof Senanayake said.
"It could mean that blood group O is less likely to cause clotting."
Researchers are also beginning to identify new and peculiar symptoms of the virus including blistered feet and a loss of taste.
"The loss of smell can occur with quite a few viral infections that affect the upper respiratory tract and coronavirus as a group can be responsible," Prof Senanayake said.
"It tends to effect the olfactory nerve, which is your nerve for smell.
"It can also cause a lot of inflammation in the nose and that can effect smell."
One patient being treated for COVID-19 in Wuhan reported a change in his skin colour, however Prof Senanayake said this was more likely to do with the antibiotics opposed to the virus itself.
"Antibiotics, although they are wonderful at treating infections they all have side fix and everyone knows about getting diarrhoea and an itchy rash and it can ever weird things like change of skin colour," he said.

Testosterone is blamed for violence in males, implicated in sport scandals, linked to sexual prowess, desired by gym devotees, and promoted as a tonic for ageing. But how many of us really understand what testosterone is, what it does, and why its important?
Testosterone levels are about 10 times higher in men than women. While it does have important functions in women, its role is quite different so this article will focus on testosterone in men.
Testosterone and development
Testosterone is the most important male sex hormone (androgen); its needed for normal reproductive and sexual function. Hormones are chemical messengers made by glands and carried in the blood to act on various organs.
This particular hormone is important for the physical changes that happen during male puberty, such as development of the penis and testes, and for features typical of adult men, such as facial and body hair. Testosterone also acts on cells in the testes to make sperm.
Its important for overall good health; testosterone helps the growth of bones and muscles, and it affects mood, libido (sex drive), and certain aspects of mental ability.
Levels dont have to decline as you age
The hormone is present in the body from the early stages of fetal life to old age. At the earliest stage of development, it helps the fetus develop a male body and a male brain (there are gender differences, or sexual dimorphism in the human brain).
Levels are highest between the ages of 20 and 30. As men age, testosterone levels fall by about one per cent to two per cent every year, although recent research suggests this may not be true of all men as they age. It seems a large part of the drop in testosterone levels in older men is due to chronic conditions, such as obesity and diabetes.
If men remain very healthy into old age, their testosterone levels may stay the same as when they were younger.
Effects of too little and too much
Low testosterone is usually caused by a genetic disorder (such as Klinefelters syndrome, the commonest chromosomal disorder in males that leads to poor testicular function) or damage to the testes or, in rare cases, a lack of certain complementary hormones made by the brain.
Its thought that about one in 200 men under 60 years of age and about one in 10 older men may have low testosterone levels, but exact numbers are not known.
Low testosterone levels have a variety of effects at different ages. In young boys and teenagers, it means the testes and penis dont grow properly and theres poor development of muscles and facial and pubic hair. Boys with low levels of the hormone may be taller than their peers and their voice may not deepen.
In adults, low energy levels, mood swings, irritability, poor concentration, reduced muscle strength and changes in body fat distribution, and low sex drive may result from low testosterone. But thats not to say that low levels of the hormone are the only possible cause of these symptoms.

Research suggests that men with low testosterone may have a higher risk of chronic conditions, such as stroke and heart disease. Older men with low testosterone also have thinning bones and that puts them at risk of fractures.
Too much testosterone can cause problems too. Although people link the hormone with aggression, this hasnt held up under scrutiny. Rather, research has shown testosterone levels are associated with quite different traits, such as care-giving and empathy.
Supplementing it; a good or bad idea?
Longevity is highest for those men with testosterone levels in the mid-range not too high or too low and recent research supports the idea that too much or too little testosterone is best avoided.
For men with a clinical diagnosis of low levels, testosterone therapy can bring the amount of the hormone in their blood back to normal and restore and maintain good health. In boys, it can restore sexual development.
But in men with normal testosterone levels, taking supplements of the hormone is not appropriate and can cause problems. Taking testosterone can lead to a reduction in the size of the testes, and it can slow or stop sperm being made. And it can take many months to go back to normal once the man stops taking testosterone.
There is some controversy around studies suggesting that older men taking testosterone have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease but the jury is still out. What we do know is that theres no good evidence for the much-publicised benefits of testosterone supplements in old age, except for men with clinically diagnosed low testosterone.
