Oxygen Yoga and Fitness Port Coquitlam closing for two weeks following COVID-19 exposure – Vancouver Is Awesome

A yoga and fitness studio in Metro Vancouver is closing for two weeks after"multiple cases" of COVID-19 passed through its doors.

Oxygen Yoga and Fitness Port Coquitlamnotified members of the potential exposure to the virus in a series of Facebook posts, beginning Oct. 20.

In the initialpost,the studio stated that staffmade the decision to temporarily closeout of"an abundance of caution,"afterit had "two members attend the studio in the last week who have recently tested positive for COVID-19."

Though the business stressed itwas not directedto close by Fraser Health, anddoes not currently appear on the health authority's list of public COVID-19 exposures,Oxygenstaff made the decision to shut down operations until Oct. 26"in the interest of safety ...to ensure all members have a chance to monitor symptoms and get tested if necessary, as well as do a thorough sanitization of the studio space."

The studio sent out individual emails to clients who had attended class alongside members who tested positive.

But two days later, the business announced it would be extending that closure, remaining shutfor a full 14 days. Itnowplansto reopen on Nov. 4, "to ensure that any positive cases, or even any people who have interacted with those positive cases, can isolate for the recommended period."

The following day, the fitness studio again took to Facebook to share that "there have been multiple cases at the studio," stemming fromthe initialpair.

"Cases pop up everywhere and we are doing the best that we can to deal with it. Transparency and honesty is key and that includes notifying all businesses when you have a suspected case and staying home until you have a negative test to avoid the spread of the virus," readsthe post.

At the time, the studio wasmaintaining physical distancing by spacingmats six feet apart, sanitizing the spacebetween classes, and "doing a full deep clean each day."

The Port Coquitlam location is one of 78 Oxygen Yoga and Fitnessfranchises spreadacross five Canadian provinces, with severalstudios located inMetro Vancouver. The business offers "a complete full body Yoga workout in just a single session while fusing the core strengthening Pilates moves in an easy-to-follow class," which all takes place under Far infrared lights and heat.

"At the time we were informed there were two cases that were in one class, we made the decision as a company to close the doors that evening," saidOxygen CEO Jen Hamilton, in a video shared to the studio's Facebook page.

"We are keeping our studio closed for 14 days to ensure that we pass that incubation period, as well, so we don't have any crossover of customers going from location to location." Members of the PoCo location will receive a free month of virtual classes, she added.

Upon reopening, the yoga and fitness studio said it will be implementing additional safety protocols, including "a mask policy at the studio everywhere but on the mats," and removing two spots per class in an effort to further increase spacebetween students.

"We dont take our current situation lightly and would like to make sure we dont have another closure due to multiple Covid exposures at the studio," Oxygenshared in one of the Facebook posts.

Fitness from Home: Life as a Student Without the UREC – The Spectator

COVID-19 is taking a physical toll on Seattle University students, as they are no longer allowed to use Seattle Us Recreation Center (UREC) for exercise. The UREC announced its closure at the beginning of fall quarter, stating they will remain closed through the entirety of fall. Despite its closure, the UREC is offering online methods of staying active, including virtual group fitness classes, educational workshops and trainer sessions. While access to the facilities is completely prohibited for the majority of the student body, student athletes are permitted limited access to facilities.

Social distancing protocols have drastically changed on-campus living. For students looking to stay fit during the school year, options are limited. Preston Lomond, a second-year psychology major at Seattle U, is feeling the effects of no on-campus gym accessibility.

Im struggling to figure out how to do home workouts, Lomond said. Ive gotten really into walking and running, but its a bit boring. I bought a yoga mat just recently, and Im trying to do home workouts on Youtube. Ive been meaning to look at the UREC page and see what virtual opportunities they have, but I dont want to have to schedule my day around a Zoom workout, especially because Im already on Zoom enough for classes.

Last year, Lomond attended the UREC multiple times a week, utilizing the pool and upper level of the gym.

Exercise during COVID-19 is a pervasive issue for student athletes, as well, as their access to the gym is limited. Kendall Ingersoll, a second-year Anthropology major and soccer player at Seattle U, has spent the beginning of fall quarter training in isolation.

Right now we dont have access to the UREC, Ingersoll said. Well do most of our individual training outside. We use a little gym for lifting and stuff.

Like many Seattle U students, Ingersoll has been exercising from home.

Ive been walking and running a lot more, Ingersoll said. I like to run down to the water or around campus.

To aid in students DIY exercise efforts, the UREC is offering virtual classes for students working out from home. The UREC reaffirmed its commitment to student health on Seattle Us website.

We will continue to support the health, well-being and connectedness of our community through virtual & select outside, in-person, programming, the university page stated.

Currently, the UREC is providing Spark Sessions, a free 15-30 minute check-in with a trainer, to help students feel inspired. Another option is the 5k your way, the URECs virtual challenge, which urges students to move for 3.1 miles in any way that inspires them.

For students needing more guidance, group fitness classes are available via Zoom and consist of yoga, HIIT and full-body workout programs. For those looking to leave their bedroom, the Seattle U park and tennis courts are open for socially distanced exercise. Equipment rentals are also available.

While Seattle U continues to offer resources for its students, some wonder if full tuition is too much for an isolated education.

All that I should be paying for is my classes, Lomond said. I dont know what percentage of my tuition wouldve gone towards the UREC, but its still a really expensive school because of things like the gymwhich we cant use right now.

According to the tuition breakdown on the Seattle U website, full-time students pay $300 annually in recreational fees. This accounts for 0.45% of an estimated annual tuition of $65,970.As the UREC remains closed indefinitely, students will have to continue finding other methods of staying healthy.

Lower back pain: Exercise is the cure but there is a catch – Sydney Morning Herald

The title of the research sums up the problem: "People considering exercise to prevent low back pain recurrence prefer exercise programs that differ from programs known to be effective."

Lead author Giovanni Ferreira from the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health said the research found the longer the program, the less likely they were to participate. The institute is a research partnership between Sydney Local Health District and Sydney University.

Mr Ferreira said previous studies had shown exercise did reduce lower back pain if there was ongoing commitment. "It is like [reducing] high blood pressure, you can't do one month of exercise and that's it," he said.

Cost was also a factor. For every $10 increase in the cost of these programs, researchers saw a significant decrease in willingness to exercise among people from low and middle incomes. And people on lower incomes were less likely to prefer exercise as a solution than others.

Whether someone was in pain at the time they were being surveyed made no difference to answers.

Andrew Murray from Baulkham Hills has suffered back pain intermittently for nearly 30 years. It is occasionally bad enough to prompt him to take a day off work.

Mostly he heads to the physiotherapist, where he goes through exercises to improve his flexibility and core strength. It helps. But once the physio tells the 49-year-old construction project manager that he should keep on exercising by himself at home or the immediate pain goes away, he stops.

"It is out of sight, out of mind," Mr Murray said.

The research into people's attitudes was prompted after Sydney University attempted in 2018 to recruit participants for a free three-month program to prevent back pain entailing group sessions and some one-to-one work with a physiotherapist.

"Many declined. It was too much commitment. And most people that got into the trial failed to attend some of the group sessions," Mr Ferreira said.

Lower back pain is the leading cause of disability globally.

The research recommends the development of strategies to increase motivation and confidence toparticipate in exercise-based prevention programs. It also suggests that people with low back pain should be advised explicitly about which exercise programs reduce recurrence.

As a result of the study, the university is looking for participant to join a trial of a walking program to prevent low back pain

Matt Nelson declined offers to stay on defense due to Lions’ long-term vision on offensive line – MLive.com

ALLEN PARK -- Matt Nelson had other offers to play defensive line after going undrafted out of Iowa last year. But the Detroit Lions had a long-term plan for the 6-foot-8 defensive lineman, and it involved a lot of trust, patience and eating to make it a reality.

Nelson, who saw 46 snaps at right tackle in Detroits win last week, said the long-term vision was the selling point to sign with the Lions despite some offers to stay put. Nelson was a four-year defensive lineman at Iowa, racking up 109 total tackles, 11 for loss and eight sacks in 43 games.

It was really just a Detroit thing, Nelson said via Zoom on Thursday. "They reached out to me in the predraft process and were like: Hey, we dont really see you as a defensive lineman. Would you mind switching over to the offensive line? And kind of went over like the barebones plan of, OK, youre going to come in, essentially redshirt you. We dont see you playing at all the first year. Were going to put some weight on you. Youre going to learn how to play offensive line, and essentially go from there.

I had one or two other offers to play defensive line, and essentially, it was like, OK, this (offensive line) is my best opportunity to keep playing football for a long time. After talking with family, my agent, and everything like that, it was like OK. Theyve got a plan for, they are really willing to invest in you. I think we should do it. I think its worked out great so far.

He was granted the extended playing time due to Lions offensive tackles Tyrell Crosby and Halapoulivaati Vaitai exiting due to dehydration issues in Jacksonville. Nelson had seen the occasional rep as the extra lineman or on special teams this season, but this was his first taste of an actual role.

Nelson played some tight end in high school but said Week 6 represented the first time he had blocked anyone since. He allowed two pressures, but the Lions ran for 180 yards and three touchdowns in the win, so not too shabby.

He said he came into Allen Park a little under 295 pounds last year and was told by former offensive line coach Jeff Davidson there would be no playing while tipping the scales under 300 pounds. So, Nelson spent the year eating, lifting weights and learning how to play offensive line on Detroits practice squad.

He said he definitely feels bigger and more like an offensive lineman after gaining 15 pounds, undergoing a body transformation.

It just felt like I was snacking all the time, he said. "There were probably three or four solid meals, but before practice, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a shake -- that sort of stuff. Eating was my job at that point in my life.

I came in at a little bit under 295 and the coach last year, (former Lions offensive line) coach (Jeff) Davidson was like, Im not going to put an offensive lineman out there under 300 pounds. And so, hes like, 'OK, youre going to have to gain weight. Youre going to have to gain strength in your core, your upper body. Essentially said, 'OK, you need to build up your body, so I met with Jeff and the coaching staff, and they essentially came up with a plan where I lifted four days a week.

While making the switch from defensive to offensive line doesnt sound ideal for someones initial professional prospects. Nelson said he wouldnt have it any other way because he might not have sniffed the field had he made the switch while at Iowa. Hes certainly not wrong in that way of thinking, with Iowas standing as a bonafide offensive line factory still holding firm.

So when I got there, Brandon Scherff and Andrew Donnal were the tackles. And then when I was a young player, it was Ike (Ike) Boettger and Boone Myers. Ike is still in the league. He plays for the Bills, and Boone was a very good tackle, Nelson said. "Then, when I was leaving, it was Alaric Jackson, who is there currently, and (Buccaneers first-round rookie tackle) Tristan Wirfs.

I dont think I would have ever played. I mean, Ive talked to them about it, and they were like, yeah, we thought about putting (you) at tackle, but we needed you on the defensive line. It was just the fit at the time. And I honestly dont know if I would have beat any of those guys out, but Im kind of glad it happened the way it did.

Its worth noting this long-winding journey to Detroits offensive line wouldnt have occurred had it not been for sound advice from his future wife while the two were in high school. Nelson was apparently toying around with the idea of focusing on basketball due to some offers from mid-majors, the Dakota schools (and) Rice.

My wife was the big one that essentially was like, Youd be stupid if quit football. And Im glad she told me that because I wouldnt be here, Nelson said. "From early on, shes always been very, very truthful and very, very blunt with me. At one point, I did think I was a great basketball player, but reality set in, and football was for me.

Yeah, my first Division I interest was from basketball schools. Thats why I thought I was good at basketball, but yeah, I got a big reality check when it turned out theres not a lot of 6-foot-8 white dudes in the NBA.

KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids reports Nelson and his wife, Hayley, held a virtual wedding over the summer.

While the Lions sold Nelson on their long-term plans, the newfound offensive lineman maintains goals for life post-football. He worked in an orthopedic and neurosurgery research lab while at Iowa and continues to do his best to stay updated on current research trends.

Lions guard Joe Dahl revealed some of Nelsons doctoral aspirations during his media availability earlier this week. Dahl talked about the job Nelson had done with the transition, saying hes always asking questions and learning with an impressive work ethic.

Ive always been interested in science ever since I was little. I either wanted to play football or I wanted to be a doctor, Nelson said. I wanted to actually be an orthopedic surgeon. For the longest time, I wanted to be a team doctor, so if I could be like a team doctor in the NFL, like that would be sweet. Throughout life, Ive always wanted to be involved with sports and all that sort of stuff, and that was another avenue to do that. I definitely realize football is going to end at some point, and so what else interested me? I wanted to be a doctor, so yeah, I took the MCAT and other stuff. Had an interview at the University of Iowa for med school, didnt get accepted, but well see how long this football thing lasts and if I go back.

Intuitive Is Upbeat on Long-Term, Cautious on Near-Term – Medical Device and Diagnostics Industry

Medical device companies continue to grapple with near-term uncertainty as COVID-19 rages on, impacting some regions more so than others. This uncertainty was apparent during Intuitive Surgical's third-quarter earnings call. The surgical robotics pioneersawsignificant variability in procedure growth and new system placement pipelines by region.

"While the pandemic has created near- and mid-term uncertainty in the form of competing healthcare priorities and economic stresses, I have high confidence in the need for high quality, minimally invasive surgery and therapies in long-term," Intuitive Surgical CEO Gary Guthart said during the call."To deal with the current and future stresses on the healthcare system, payers, hospitals, and surgeons are looking for solutions that improve outcomes, decrease in hospital resource consumption, and lower total cost to treat. In other words, the core pillars of the quadruple aim we had set as our goal many years ago."

Intuitive installed 195 new surgical robotics systems during the quarter, which is significantly weaker than the 275 installs the company saw in Q3 2019, but an improvement over the 175 installs seen in Q2 2020. That's a 29% decrease year-over-year, and a 10% increase from last quarter.

CFOMarshall Mohr provided additional color regarding procedure trends the robotics company has seen in recent months. Overall, Mohr said, Intuitive's robotics procedures recovered gradually during the third quarter, exiting the quarter at around 90% of pre-COVID levels. However, he noted, the extent and pace of recovery varied by market.

The U.S. market did experience broader adoption across multiple robotics procedures led by general surgery. For example, Mohr said, Intuitive saw significant year-over-year growth in bariatric procedures, but that growth was partially offset by reduced diagnosis of conditions such as prostate cancer, which impacted procedure volumes in those areas.

Philip Kim, head of investor relations at Intuitive, pointed out that bariatric procedures may have benefited from some patients prioritizing weight loss during the pandemic because obesity has been identified as a COVID risk factor.

"While total worldwide procedure rates have improved, it is possible that resurgences of COVID-19 like those currently being experienced in parts of Europe and the U.S. could negatively impact da Vinci procedures," Mohr said."In addition, delays in diagnosis and treatment of underlying conditions could also negatively impact da Vinci procedures."

Guthart did note that hospitals seem to be doing a better job of handling concurrent needs of COVID and non-COVID patients compared to the early days of the pandemic.

"I think they have protocols that they feel good about," Guthart said."I think they have access to resources and things like PPE that early on they didnt. That gives us some comfort that, barring a massive influx, they can manage both [sides] of patient need."

He also said hospitals are showing a clear interest in minimally invasive surgery and in Intuitive's robotics products. But that doesn't necessarily give the company or its investors any more visibility into the next few quarters.

"What the weather does, what the COVID pandemic does, I think, it is harder for Intuitive to have direct insight into," Guthart said.

This lack of insight made some medtech analysts hesitant to issue a "buy" rating on Intuitive.

"While we continue to believe that the long-term thesis for [Intuitive Surgical] remains intact, the lack ofvisibility into near-term trends makes it hard for us to recommend shares at the current valuation," noted Ryan Zimmerman, a medtech analyst at BTIG. The firm maintained its "neutral" rating on Intuitive's stock.
