BroncoBOLDs emphasis on mental health awareness and psychological fitness – Boise State University The Arbiter Online
Boise State has raised awareness of mental health by creating Bronco Bold, a new program that gives students the opportunity to share their voice and have that voice be heard.
The program serves as a therapeutic outlet for those who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Bronco Bold is assisting with mental health problems student-athletes may be having with help from coaches and staff within the athletic program.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during late June, 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use.
The program was established on three core foundations: reduce stigma, raise awareness and cultivate resilience.
Joe Nickell, associate athletic director of communications, has worked with third parties to bring more support to the program.
Since the 2017-18 academic year, third parties have been contracted with us to work with student athletes, Nickell said. One example of a third party contact that Boise State has reached out to is Side Arm. The athletic department has invested in their members, according to Nickell these sources are here to help and work as a team off of the field.
A variety of occupations and professions are coming together in order to provide for students. It is imperative to individuals such as Joe Nickell, Jade Loville, womens basketball junior point guard, and Mens Basketball Head Coach Leon Rice that Boise States representatives are continuing to contribute in building a reputation with the program. They are moving forward to make a name for themselves and setting examples through their quotes.
There is independence that exists in the field of competition. While competition tends to divide Bronco Bold provides company to those who compete and struggle mentally.
Bronco Bold is about taking care of our mental health the same way we take care of our physical health. Its recognizing that its ok to not be ok, Loville said.
Loville is the daughter of eight year NFL veteran running back Derek Loville, who played for three teams during his nine year career.
Mental health is not selective when it comes to different people struggling, according to Loville. There is school spirit behind the initiative and how it affects the performance of those who represent Boise State.
Bronco Bold is about coming together as an athletic department, a campus, and a community and building a culture of resiliency and strength. Its about making mental health a priority, Rice said.
Rice has been a turning point in making history at Boise State with his position as head coach for 10 years with the mens basketball team. During this time, he has managed to take the Broncos to five playoff tournaments including eight 20 win seasons.
Womens Basketball Head Coach Gordan Presnell has been coaching at Boise State for the last 16 years and seen the changes in the athletic department over the years.

Staring down a laptop perched on a desk, Carson Fulks welcomes participants and reminds them to have water ready for his virtual fitness class Zoomba.
Fulks, a fourth-year in marketing, is one of what he estimates to be 60 group fitness instructors at Ohio State who stretched their skills and stayed flexible to virtually continue group fitness classes, now renamed Group Fitness LIVE.
Fulks, who started teaching Zumba in the spring, said students can sign up for virtual fitness classes through the universitys recreational sports website.
Once students join the Zoom call, Fulks begins the meeting with a poll question, such as how midterms are going, then jumps into the choreography.
Im really just trying to connect with them a little bit more, because were not able to do that in person, obviously, Fulks said. He said the class follows a 10-song format with a water break halfway through and ends with a cool-down stretch, all of which can be done from the comfort of participants homes.
Faith Nimely, a fifth-year in accounting and fitness instructor, said that her Total Body Blast class typically unfolds in a bell-shaped curve. Like Fulks, she welcomes her Zoom class with a poll question and launches straight into the 45-minute workout.
My class typically starts with moderate intensity and then high intensity is in the middle of it, Nimely said. You start relatively high, go your highest, and then well come back down with the intensity.
For Nimely, teaching a strength class is a far cry from the norm. She began as a cycling instructor last fall, but the class hasnt been able to meet this semester since most students dont have stationary bikes in their dorm rooms or houses.
Nimely said she was hesitant about teaching virtual fitness classes because the idea of switching her class and transitioning her teaching mode was unappealing, but she eventually agreed.
Over the summer, I missed teaching so much, Nimely said. I used to think it was cycling, but its just the principle of teaching people and helping them better themselves that I really missed the most.
Fulks said he struggled with the new class format as well, and said that some of its worst aspects included smaller class sizes and not being able to feed off of participants energy. Despite changes, Fulks said hes glad he can continue to help people move and better their physical and mental health.
One of the things I always say at the end of every class is just I thank my participants for coming. But I also commend them on the sense that theyre taking a huge step for their overall mental and physical health, Fulks said. All were trying to do, this semester specifically, is we just want people to move, and we dont really care how theyre moving.

Brooke Shields has made her health a top prioritybut when the coronavirus pandemic changed life as we knew it, she had to get creative to keep up with her fitness routine.
When COVID hit, I couldnt go to a gym or see a trainer, and I needed to keep some semblance of control in my life, Shields told Prevention.com in partnership with Life Happens for Life Insurance Awareness Month.
In 2018, Shields had surgery for a partial right knee replacement. I never thought Id have knee problems, and Ive got nothing but knee problems, she says, explaining that her knee function has gotten incrementally worse over the years. Overhauling her approach to fitness has been a key aspect of her recovery.
So, she began virtually working with trainer Ngo Okafor and sharing her at-home sweat sessions on Instagram Livebuilding an active social media community along the way. Doing these little workouts was sort of the only area that I felt I had an ounce of control, she explained.
Shields took her workouts indoors throughout quarantine, using equipment you could find anywhere, like water bottles, soup cans, and resistance bands. Ive always maintained a very active life, the former dancer says. Ive done it for health and strength reasons, because I noticed that Im also healthier minded when Im physically active.

To help regain strength in her knees, Shields began educating herself with a trainer. I really started reintroducing myself to the many different muscles we have in our bodies that lay dormant or dont become activated, she explains. I started feeling much more balanced and stronger, but instead of being incredibly dominant in one area and weaker in another, I became much more overall activated as far as my muscles were concerned.
The actress said targeting areas such as her quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and hips has helped strengthen her knees, and focusing on her core has reduced back pain.

Before I got my partial knee replacement, I worked out for a year just to prepare myself so that my recovery would be faster, Shields says. So I exercised to maintain the strength and the stability in and around the area thats been the most compromised.
The actress says her left knee now seems to be heading towards full replacement, so shes working to build up strength and stability with that knee, too. I hope that maybe I will be able to avoid a full replacement by doing every other thing thats an option for me, she says.
Strength and stability are key, so she focuses on low-impact workouts with her trainer. Lunges are not for me, Shields admits. Im not at the ability to do that, but everything is low impact and is geared towards the different muscles on and around my knees and my abs.
I think sitting is the new bizarre addiction, Shields says. Its detrimental to health, because what happens is that your body shuts down.
So, whenever she has to sit for long periods of the time, she also makes it a priority to move. There are tiny things you can do while youre sitting down, or you can do an oblique workout in five minutes, she says. Its just a matter of sending a message to your muscles, she adds, so they dont weaken over time.
On top of that, she moves every day no matter whatand it doesnt have to include treadmill sprints. Find something you like to do, she says. During COVID, my daughters and I would just dance like crazy around the living room. And we were sweating! We felt better afterwards, our adrenaline was higher, and we were invigorated.
Shields, whos currently filming a Netflix film in Scotland, gets her exercise in on the road by cycling and horseback riding. Im pretty exhausted by the end of the day, but its kept me motivated to keep doing it. Its definitely hard when you get out of your routine, she says. The key is to find something online thats energetic and fun. Try to think creatively and do little things that you will see over time will start to have an effect.
Getting a massage isnt just for relaxation, according to Shields. I do body work not because of the luxury and pampering, but because it is alignment, its osteopathy, and all of these things that get me through the next week, she says.
Research shows that massage therapy has tons of physical and mental benefits, improving everything from stress to fatigue to joint pain to sleep. You have to be able to treat your body in the way it deserves to be treated, so you have it longer, Shields says.

As a mom of two, Shields knows first-hand how tough it can be to find time for yourselfbut its so important. We have to realize that, the stronger we are, the better moms we are. And if we carve out time for ourselves, it cant be looked at as a luxury or something for your vanity or your idol, she says.
She compares the body to a house or a car, explaining that you have to take care of it so everyone living within it can be safe. Its like any machine that you have, youve got to keep oiling the car. You have to paint the house. Otherwise, the people that you love are impacted when you deplete yourself by only thinking of them and not you, she says.
For people who think theyve missed the boat on their wellness goals, Shields has an important message: Its never, ever too late to make healthy changes, she says. And they dont have to be drastic.
I think what people start doing, is thinking, Oh, Im 50 or older or Im however many pounds overweight, and you set yourself up for failure and for insecurity by judging yourself, she continues. I say its never too late to start and it doesnt have to be excessive. Start with a little bit of something and see if you can build up. You have to be really conscious of a body thats been taking care of you for so long.

Weight loss can be a daunting thought for many with not knowing where to start or how to achieve it. After being advised by her dentist that there would be serious consequences if she was sedated for emergency treatment, Katie decided that enough was enough and embarked on her weight loss journey.
Weighing 20st, the mother-of-three feared that she would struggle to lose weight in lockdown.
Research has shown that three million Brits have put on more than a stone in weight throughout the pandemic due to spending more time at home.
However, thanks to the simple diet plan she chose to help her, she is now five stone lighter, weighing 15st 5lb.

She decided to choose the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan which helps slimmers reach their desired weight by offering nutritious and easy to prepare meals.
On losing weight, the key worker said: I contacted my local 1:1 Diet Consultant, Anthea McCulley, after I returned from a holiday in France I felt really sluggish and uncomfortable in my own skin. I wanted to run around and play with my kids, but I didnt have the energy.
Within the first few weeks on plan I started to feel better and found that I had more energy for my work, where Im often out and about in meetings.
Katie quickly fell into the routine and ditched the unhealthy foods for more healthy alternatives offered on the plan.

The mum-of-three continued: Even baking cakes with my kids didnt tempt me away from the plan! Seeing the pounds drop off, and how much healthier I felt gave me the motivation to carry on. If I went out for dinner with family, I enjoyed myself but found that I was missing being on plan and went right back to it the following morning.
Lockdown posed real worries for everyone, and I was nervous that I would find it difficult staying on plan, but thankfully I persevered and the easy-to-prepare meals made sure that I was never tempted by unhealthy foods.
What is the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge?
Founded in the 1960s by biochemist Dr Alan Howard and colleague Dr Ian Maclean-Baird, the diet was and still is a popular way to lose weight.
The diet includes preparation, weight loss, stabilisation, and long-term weight management.
The diet plan involves cutting calorie intake and eating meal replacement foods including bars, smoothies, shakes and soups.

How Often Should You Work Out? For Weight Loss and Muscle Gain – Greatist

Everyone knows youre supposed to exercise to stay healthy. But how often do you really need to head to kickboxing class, roll out your yoga mat, or get a good home workout in?
There are lots of reasons to work out more that have nothing to do with the way you look. Regular exercise can boost your mood, reduce stress, stave off illness, and contribute to an overall sense of well-being. But if your goal is muscle gain or weight loss, weve got you.
Grab your calendar and listen up: Heres how often you should work out no matter your goals and how to create your optimal fitness routine.
If you want to work out just to maintain your physical health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends you aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week.
Moderate aerobic activity (aka moderate intensity cardio) means youre moving fast enough to talk but not to sing that new Tay Swift song. Vigorous aerobic activity means youre breathing hard and fast too fast even to chat.
Split up your minutes however you like you do you. If your goal is to maintain basic health, even brisk walking for 30 minutes 5 days a week (remember to break a sweat!) will get the job done.
Hold up Do you have to work out on the daily?
When it comes to general health, theres no need to bust your butt every day of the week. In fact, theres such a thing as too much exercise. If you dont get enough rest, your muscles wont have time to recover.
That doesnt mean you cant take a stroll, bike to work, or take the stairs instead of the elevator every day, though. Its healthy to move your body consistently.
That depends on how quickly you want to see results. If your first thought is right now, duh, then experts say to hold up a minute : Dropping pounds super fast isnt sustainable or healthy.
According to the CDC, healthy weight loss means losing 1 to 2 pounds per week. Losing weight faster than that can set you up for vitamin deficiencies, fatigue, or other complications.
Basically, to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. So while your diet plays a major role in dropping pounds, exercise can help too.
In general, try to exercise at least 4 or 5 days a week if you want to see weight loss results in both the short and long term.
To max out results, plan on incorporating both cardiovascular and strength training exercises into your regular routine. Your workouts should have a combo of:
Not digging 4 to 5 days of exercise? Build up gradually!
You dont have to go that hard from the start. Lets say you dont exercise at all right now (no judgment!). In that case, even starting with 2 days a week can lead to steady weight loss. As you get used to hitting the gym or working out at home, you can build up to 4 or 5 days.
Mixing cardio and strength training is key for a healthy weight loss plan.
When you lift weights, you build vital lean muscle mass. If youre thinking, Wait, I dont want to bulk up, hold on just a minute. Building lean muscle mass can actually help you burn fat. It increases your metabolism and helps you burn calories at a higher rate even when youre just lying on the couch watching Netflix.
Cardio, meanwhile, is good for your heart and your whole bod. It can also help you burn calories, boost your mood, and ease stress.
At a glance, your weekly weight loss workout routine could look something like this:
Whether its swimming, biking, running, or hiking, choose a cardio activity that works best for you.
According to the CDC, aim to do either 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio at least 5 days a week (150 minutes total per week) or at least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity 3 days a week (75 minutes total per week).
But thats just for basic health. If you want to lose weight, consider a combo of at least 2 days of moderate activity and 2 days of vigorous activity.
Shoot for 2 to 3 days a week of strength training. For best results, include full-body workouts that use compound exercises (those that work multiple muscles at once). Some ideas:
Dont worry if you dont have any equipment or dont know all the moves your own body weight and anything you remember from high school gym class can help you get fit. Here are some more basic exercises to try:
No matter how stoked you are about your #fitness goals, your bod needs a break now and then. Give your muscles time to recover at least 2 days a week.

It might sound counterintuitive, but resting up can lead to major gains in your fitness routine. Doing the same exercises day after day can suppress recovery and cause you to actually lose muscle over time.
If you still want to get in some movement on rest days (more power to you), consider devoting them to stretching or gentle yoga. Your bod will thank you.

Fair Haven Native Exercising for All the Right Reasons – The Two River Times
In college, Jordanna Drazin was unhappy with her physical and mental health. So the Rumson-Fair Haven alum and recent Syracuse graduate started an on-demand and live exercise video platform called Schvitzcription which she hopes will encourage young people to work out.

When Jordanna Drazin was a student at Syracuse University, she was, like many young women and men, struggling with her weight and her mental health. Dieting is a multibillion-dollar business and so ingrained in the culture that, when she began losing weight, everyone assumed she was following a popular weight-loss program or using diet products to achieve results.
People were asking me for advice and they couldnt get over the fact that I did it without cutting my calories or (by) not eating breakfast or intermittent fasting, said Drazin, a 2016 graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School.
So she created an Instagram account to make it clear she was following her instincts and working out to feel good, not to attain a certain body image.
Drazins message of body positivity on her account, The Daily Schvitz By Jordanna (@thedailyschvitz), resonates now more than ever. She calls out the diet culture and those promoting it for making people, especially young women, less healthy as they try to achieve an impossible perfection.
While majoring in communications, she completed an internship at Equinox, an American fitness company headquartered in New York. There she realized exercising and following a healthy lifestyle was a passion. When the pandemic hit and everyone went into lockdown, Drazins message of exercise for mental and physical health became even more important. She started holding workout classes outside for friends, then online via Zoom. She quickly realized scheduled classes werent sustainable since everyone had different schedules while working or taking classes virtually from home.
Thats when she decided to invest in her idea of an on-demand library of workout videos called Schvitzcription. She uploads new videos every week and currently has about 110 subscribers. She has nearly 6,000 followers on Instagram.
Its just been an awesome way to keep busy during my quarantine and help everyone enjoy fitness the way that its meant to be enjoyed, as something pleasurable rather than torture, she said.
She credits her communications and advertising classes at Syracuse for helping her with the social media aspect of her new business. She is also studying to become a certified group fitness instructor which she expects to happen before the end of the year. She said she uses her background in dance, what she learned during her internship and the fitness tips she picked up along her own journey to create videos that are fun and accessible for everyone. For Drazin, the thought of spending 30 mindless minutes on an exercise machine just to burn calories doesnt have nearly the overall health and well-being impact of 30 minutes being mindful of your bodys movement in a class that is designed to get the heart rate up and improve your mood.
Schvitzcription offers a range of videos from five-minute quickie workouts to low intensity workouts for sculpting and toning to 45-minute high intensity interval workouts.
Drazin chose the name for her account and workout platform after realizing she was disheartened by the post-workout photos people were posting on social media. One thing that rubbed me the wrong way about many of the health influencers I was following at the time is that they were always posting pictures glowing after their workouts, hair and makeup perfectly intact, Drazin said. When I left workouts I always looked like a sweaty mess, drenched and red in the face! I wanted to normalize this and emphasize that sweat is something to be proud of and embrace because it shows you worked hard. Schvitz is the Yiddish word for sweat and Im Jewish, so I would constantly be saying Im schvitzing! after a hard workout, she explained.
Drazin wants her subscribers schvitzing, but she doesnt want them spending a lot of money to do it. The Schvitzcription on-demand library is available for $10 a month or $100 for a year; live classes are $5 a class, or $45 for a pack of 10. I really wanted to make it as affordable as possible, Drazin said, because my main demographic really is college students, and I never want price to get in the way of someone feeling good about themselves.
I wanted it to be accessible for everyone to be able to feel their best, even if money is tight, she said.
Her goal with Schvitzcription is for people to feel their best and for me to help them get there, Drazin said. She wants to inspire others and make them realize they dont need to beat up their body in order to have a successful workout. I would love to have thousands of subscribers and be able to maintain it as a full-time job, she said. But for now, Drazin is happy anytime someone reaches out to tell her shes helping them.
Drazins approach to eating is similar to her approached to fitness. She never counted calories or followed a low carb or keto diet, but instead focused on reminding herself that all foods are accessible. Freshman and sophomore year I was struggling with binge eating, she said, something she feels is prevalent on college campuses. She said it took time for her to get past the notion of denying yourself food out of fear of gaining weight. Once you realize that that idea is sort of garbage, and its a societal construct, you know, you realize slowly that you can eat something and its not going to instantly make you gain weight or you can not eat something and youre not going to lose the weight in five seconds. It took a lot of awareness and a lot of practice and a lot of effort and mindfulness.
She knows in the time of instant gratification this message is difficult to embrace, but said once you practice it, it gets easier. But its certainly not an overnight fix, she acknowledged. She no longer categorizes food as good or bad and does not subscribe to the all or nothing mindset. In a recent Instagram post accompanying a photo of highly appealing chocolate chip pancakes, she said diet culture and food restricting ends up being way more unhealthy for you in the long run than some delicious pancakes.
If Drazin were to offer one piece of advice to those wanting to start exercising or losing weight, she said it is to remember that health is not about looking a certain way, its about feeling your best.
Dont be intimidated by all these people that claim health and fitness is one certain look. It is more about doing something that is going to make you feel good in your own body.

Ex-CEO of Dallas supplement company linked to sickness and death gets 5 years in prison – The Dallas Morning News
They wanted to lose weight and get stronger to boost their military careers. But after taking USPLabs' dietary supplements with ingredients made in Chinese labs they became severely sickened and ended up in hospital emergency rooms, according to court testimony.
One woman said she needed a liver transplant. Another had her gallbladder removed. Other soldiers died after taking the supplements.
On Tuesday evening, Jacobo Geissler, former chief executive of the now-defunct Dallas company, was sentenced to five years in prison. It was the maximum punishment for his role in importing a dangerous synthetic drug and falsely labeling it as a natural extract in his products.
Geissler, 44, pleaded guilty in February 2019 -- on the eve of trial -- to one count of conspiring to introduce misbranded food into interstate commerce with an intent to defraud or mislead. He and USPLabs were among eight defendants in the case that began with a 2015 indictment.
But he was most responsible for the illegal scheme, U.S. District Judge Sam Lindsay said during Tuesdays sentencing hearing, which lasted all day.
USPLabs case was one of the nations biggest supplement fraud cases. The booming $46 billion supplement industry came under government scrutiny in 2015 during a major crackdown over safety concerns, and USPLabs was one of the top targets. Federal regulators that year took action against over 100 other supplement makers and marketers.
Unlike pharmaceuticals, most dietary supplements do not need FDA approval before they hit the market. A Pew report from earlier this year said that supplements were the cause of more than 15,000 reports of health problems sent to the FDA between 2004 and 2013, including almost 4,000 hospitalizations.
Lindsay said Geissler put profit over the safety of the public.
The judge also cited government evidence showing that Geissler was committing fraud with his dietary supplement company while he was still on probation for an earlier conviction related to peddling illegal steroids sourced from China.
Theres a similarity between the two [cases], said Lindsay, who also fined Geissler $250,000.
Patrick R. Runkle, a trial attorney with the Justice Departments consumer protection branch, said that when a co-defendant wrote Geissler to say his product had likely contributed to a soldiers death, Geisslers main concern was keeping such statements out of email.
He said Geisslers strategy was simple: put products into the marketplace and hope bad things didnt happen; and if they did, try to make enough money to be able to deal with any potential consequences.
The Dallas company claimed it sold dietary supplements derived from natural ingredients like geraniums. But they actually contained DMAA, a dangerous synthetic stimulant made from chemicals in Chinese factories, according to prosecutors. Geissler directed his Chinese supplier to use fraudulent paperwork to ship the powders his company bought, the judge said.
The companys executives marketed their products as safe even though in private they talked about the dangers, court records show. The products flew off the shelves and netted the owners over $230 million, the feds say.
Lindsay allowed Geissler to begin serving his sentence in January. A total of seven defendants have pleaded guilty in the case. The government dismissed charges against an eighth defendant who agreed to enter a diversion program.
USPLabs' top-selling supplements with DMAA -- OxyElite Pro and Jack3d -- factored heavily in Tuesdays sentencing hearing. Supplement retailer GNC marketed such products to servicemen and women on U.S. military bases, according to testimony.
Danielle Black, a 31-year-old Army flight medic who served two deployments in Afghanistan, testified that she took OxyElite Pro in 2013 to try to lose weight. She quickly became sick, with nausea, vomiting, fatigue, abdominal pain and severe jaundice.
I looked like a Simpsons character, she said.
Her urine turned a dark Coca-Cola color. Doctors had to remove her gallbladder, she said. They later told her the supplement was to blame for her illness, said Black, who added that she still has lingering health issues.
Cynthia Novida told Lindsay that after taking OxyElite Pro in 2013 to lose weight, she had to have a liver transplant. Associated health problems, she said, ruined her naval career by forcing her to retire early. Novida, 52, said she left the Navy in 2016 as a chief petty officer after serving for 24 years.
The symptoms she described after taking the USPLabs supplement were similar to Blacks. She said she slept all day, couldnt hold down food and her eyes turned a bright yellow color.
My career was done, she said, in tears.
Novida said she still feels tired at times and that her doctors also linked her symptoms to the supplement.
Both women said they settled their legal claims with USPLabs.
When the supplements were first linked to an outbreak of liver injuries in 2013, the company rushed to sell its remaining inventory before substituting DMAA with different ingredients, prosecutors said.
Dana Pittard, a retired Army general and a former Fort Bliss commander, testified Tuesday that DMAA in USPLabs' products was found to have contributed to the deaths of three of his soldiers at the El Paso base in 2011 and 2012.
After the first two, we were very, very concerned, Pittard said.
He said he learned DMAA was banned in Canada and Australia, and he asked GNC to remove the USPlabs products from the shelves at his base. The Defense Department ended up getting the workout supplement banned from all of its military installations, he said. By 2013, the FDA was investigating the products, he said.
The FDA says DMAA, known as 1,3-dimethylamylamine, is an amphetamine derivative that was marketed for sports performance and weight loss in dietary supplements. Taking DMAA can raise blood pressure and lead to heart attacks, the FDA says. Its now illegal to market products with DMAA as dietary supplements.
Michael Sparling had taken Jack3d to build muscle, Pittard said. The 22-year-old Army private collapsed in 2011 while exercising with his unit at Fort Bliss. He died the same day of a heart attack.
Leanne Sparling, his mother, testified Tuesday about getting the terrifying news by phone after her son had collapsed. She said Geissler brought it upon himself with his greed and selfishness. She said he obviously hasnt learned his lesson because hes a repeat offender.
Geissler, who is now barred from the supplement industry, told Lindsay he acknowledged his victims' pain and grief.
The last thing I wanted to do was harm anyone, he said. Im not the same person who committed these reckless offenses.
Michael Gibson, his defense lawyer, told the judge that his clients company has so far paid out $22 million in settlements to victims who brought legal claims over its products.
Runkle told the judge that Geisslers net worth is $13 million.
Geissler still faces a ruling, which Lindsay said he will issue later, on how much restitution he will owe.
Jonathan Doyle, another defendant in the case, testified for the government that Geissler was not around while he and other USPLabs executives worked hard to shutter the company under the terms of a plea agreement. Instead, Geissler was pitching a new supplement that he claimed would alleviate hangovers, he said.
Doyle, who was president of USPLabs, also said Tuesday that both he and Geissler lied under oath during a 2010 deposition in a lawsuit over their products. The questions they were asked related to whether the DMAA in their products was naturally sourced or synthetically produced, he said.
Doyle has also pleaded guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced later this week.
