Fitness Studios Are Trying to Pivot to Stay Open During the Pandemic – Washingtonian

Last year was a very good one for Alyson Shade. The 36-year-olds Capitol Hill yoga spot, Realignment Studio, was doing great: It had a consistent base of returning clients, hosted its first teacher training program, and brought in revenue of almost $400,000, which Shade says is well beyond what similar studios usually earn in a year.
We were looking forward to 2020 being similar, and we were on track to continue that way, says Shade. Until obviously March changed a lot of things for us.
By March, Shade means the Covid-19 national emergency and Mayor Muriel Bowsers stay-at-home order. Suddenly, what was once a bustling studio was now a closed studio as Shade was forced to stream all her classes online. She managed to stay afloat for a while via virtual classes and a PPP loan, but it wasnt enough. By the middle of the summer, the studio had lost almost half of its expected revenue, says Shade, and in September, she decided to close the studio permanently.
Its a situation thats played out across the country as fitness owners try to find a way to reclaim the income they made in a pre-pandemic world. Virtual classes dont provide the same in-person experience and motivation, making it hard to retain customers, but many people dont feel comfortable going back to small, enclosed rooms to pant and sweat alongside strangers. Its also hard for smaller spots to compete with virtual-at-home behemoths like Peloton or Mirror, which have made bank during the pandemic.
Timothy Torres found this to be the case at the U Street barre-and-cycle spot the Dailey Method, of which hes a franchise owner. There was too much competition in the virtual space, so Torres stopped offering online classes after a while. And even though DC gyms could technically reopen under Junes phase two guidelines, the capacity limits were such that Torres could only have four clients in a room that used to fit 25. The cost to host in-person classes wasnt worth it, and Torres has decided to permanently close the once-healthy business on November 1.
Its a decision he blames partly on the governments pandemic response. Because the business was a franchise of a national brand, Torres wasnt eligible for DCs small business loans. And he believes the reopening guidelines were too strict. It felt like the government, especially the local government, didnt allow us to succeed, says Torres. It almost forced us to fail.
So, what does it take for a fitness group to survive the pandemic?
If you ask Chris Perrin of the bootcamp studio Cut Seven, its innovation, flexibility, and a swift response. When the group temporarily closed its Rhode Island Avenue location in March, it switched to an online platform. But Perrin quickly realized that people were hungry for in-person experiences. So the team started hosting outdoor bootcamps at Garrison Elementarys field, which provided enough room for everyone to socially distance. The workouts were such a success that Cut Seven recently opened an indoor-outdoor location in an old mechanics garage off 14th Street.
We are definitely going hard one way, says Perrin of going all-in on the outdoor model. But I think its the right way. I think people want something like this.
Because the group can store equipment in the garage at night, the open-air space feels more like a typical studio experience with kettle bells and benchesjust outdoors. While the group can only safely host half the number of clients they normally would, Perrin thinks itll be enough to sustain them through the pandemic.
And, like many DC-area restaurants, the group is planning to heat the outdoor space this winter so customers looking for a safe option will still come out on frigid days.
I am more confident in our ability to roll with the punches, says Perrin of upending his entire business model in seven months. I feel like this is the status quo. I think things can, and probably will, change again.
Its a bet Kat Zajac is making, too. The owner of Ascend Cycle + Strength was hosting virtual workout classes for a while, but found that it was difficult for her small group to have the resources and technology to stay competitive.
So when her landlord mentioned an empty garage down the street from her Del Ray location, Zajac decided to take a leap. The open-air Ascend Garage opened in July, with bikes spaced 10 feet apart and riders listening to the instructor and music via headphones, a la silent disco. The model has gone well: The classes are consistently full, and while Zajac says she was at 30 percent of her normal monthly income at the pandemics beginning, shes now inched up to 50 percent, even with limited capacity.
Like Perrin, Zajacs decided to embrace the outdoor concept: Shes leaving her lease at her original indoor spot down the road and is expanding the garage to include space for strength training classes. People are getting used to their own personal space, she says. Im not sure once a vaccine is here, or when the pandemic is more under control, that people will be wanting to snuggle up to each other and sweat.
Kendra Blackett-Dibinga has also pivoted her business model during the pandemic, but in more of a community sense. The owner of Bikram Yoga Works recently launched a campaign in the wake of protests over the killing of George Floyd, and has started hosting virtual town halls about the racial justice movement.
Were seeing ourselves transform into more of a community space, as opposed to just a yoga studio, says Blackett-Dibinga, who is offering both virtual and socially distanced classes. [Clients see it as] a place to take a pause and have insightful discussion and connect with people on a different level.
The studios campaign is called I Come to Breathe, and was inspired after Blackett-Dibinga took her daughters to a Black Lives Matter protest. I was looking at these people who are in the protests themselves, who were in the fight, and Im like, well, are they taking time for self-care?, she says. We need to be able to be of sound mind and body to continue to fight for justice.
The campaign has a series of ambassadors who share free classes with their communities, emphasize self-care as a form of resistance, and elevate voices not typically heard in the often homogenous fitness world. Of course, its a platform for inclusivity and discussions around social and racial justice, but its also a way to remind folks of the importance of these wellness spaces that are taking a hit. Its an intentional messaging coming from our business that was impacted by the closures, says Blackett-Dibinga. We want to remind people that even if you cant come into the studio environment, it doesnt mean everything has to come to a standstill.
Despite all this planning, these business owners know that its impossible to predict whats to come. There is one thing theyre certain of, though: They need to be ready to constantly reinvent themselves in order to financially survive the pandemic.
Its a rude awakening when we do start to feel comfortable, says Perrin of seeing other businesses close. [There are] so many reminders out here right now to make you feel uncomfortable and put you back in your work mode.
Zajac agrees. Its not an easy industry to be in, she says. And thats especially true now. You always have to be on your toes.

Democrats Zero In on Presidents Fitness for Office as Election Looms – The New York Times
WASHINGTON Speaker Nancy Pelosi, amplifying questions about President Trumps fitness for office less than a month before the election, introduced legislation on Friday that would create a standing bipartisan group of outside experts tasked with evaluating the presidents mental and physical health and advising Congress on whether the commander in chiefs powers should be forcibly removed under the 25th Amendment.
The measure is certain to die at the end of the year, given that it would need a presidential signature to be enacted. But Democrats decision to promote it now after the presidents coronavirus diagnosis and as Ms. Pelosi has suggested that his treatment might be affecting his judgment was an unmistakable dig at the sitting presidents capacity to govern, just weeks before voters go to the polls.
A presidents fitness for office must be determined by science and facts, Ms. Pelosi said at a news conference on Capitol Hill, where she insisted that the bill, a version of which was introduced before Mr. Trump was hospitalized with the virus, had nothing to do with him. This legislation applies to future presidents, but we are reminded of the necessity of action by the health of the current president.
The measure, sponsored by Representative Jamie Raskin, Democrat of Maryland, would create a bipartisan commission of health experts, doctors and former senior executive branch officials, such as a former president, selected by top congressional leaders, to report to Congress on the presidents competence.
Mr. Trump has raged against the idea, calling Ms. Pelosi Crazy Nancy and accusing her of staging a coup, and on Friday suggested that Democrats had proposed the measure because they were concerned not about his competence, but about that of former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., his Democratic rival.
Crazy Nancy Pelosi is looking at the 25th Amendment in order to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris, Mr. Trump said on Twitter. The Dems want that to happen fast because Sleepy Joe is out of it!!!
Republicans blasted the legislation as an attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election.
Right here in this last three weeks before the election, I think those kinds of wild comments should be largely discounted, Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, told reporters in his home state of Kentucky.
Congress has never invoked the 25th Amendment to assemble a group like the one being proposed. The amendment was ratified in 1967, in the wake of President John F. Kennedys assassination, to prepare the country for an immediate transfer of power because of an emergency or illness. It directs the vice president to work with a commission to determine whether the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and could forcibly transfer those powers to the vice president until the president recovered.
Mr. Raskin argued on Friday that the saliency of convening such a commission had been underscored by the pandemic, and said that he wished Congress had set up the panel when the amendment was first ratified, adding, there is never really a good time to do it because its always just seen in its local circumstance.
In the age of Covid-19, which has killed more than 210,000 Americans and now ravaged the White House staff, the wisdom of the 25th Amendment is clear, Mr. Raskin said. What happens if a president any president ends up in a coma, or on a ventilator, and has made no provisions for the temporary transfer of power?
The renewed focus around the measure comes as Mr. Trump continues to refuse to answer basic questions about his illness, including when he last tested negative for the virus. Mr. Trump returned to the White House on Monday evening after being hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he received two experimental drug treatments and was briefly put on supplemental oxygen.
Ms. Pelosi wondered aloud on a private conference call with House Democrats this week whether the steroids Mr. Trump was taking had an impact on his thinking, according to people on the call who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe it.
He was to receive a televised medical evaluation Friday evening on Tucker Carlsons program on Fox News, conducted by a doctor who suggested in 2016, without evidence and without conducting a personal exam, that Hillary Clinton might be suffering from the lingering effects of a concussion that could compromise her fitness to serve.

Raheem Sterling fitness update provided following withdrawal from international duty – Sports Illustrated
Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling is 'likely' to be fit for the club's Premier League clash against Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, according to Jamie Jackson of the Guardian.
The 25-year-old pulled out of England international duty earlier in the week after a minor hamstring problems arose during City's 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.
After missing three international games for England, the winger is reportedly 'likely' to be fit enough to feature when Mikel Arteta's Arsenal travel to the Etihad Stadium - providing Pep Guardiola with a much-needed injury boost following a torrid time in the medical department at the start of the new campaign.
The news comes after Kevin De Bruyne had been all-but ruled out of the weekend's Premier League clash due to a muscle injury of his own, sustained during Belgium's 2-1 defeat to England at Wembley. Sergio Aguero could make some form of return on Saturday afternoon, as he returned to full first-team training on Monday of last week - however any involvement will likely be minor and come from the bench.

Is Paleo the way to go, yes or no? – Wiscasset Newspaper
Staying healthy has always been important, but never more so than this year, the year of COVID-19. Diet plays a crucial role in keeping our immune system strong its our first line of defense against disease. This weeks article explores the Paleo diet whats allowed on the menu, and whats not, and how those foods support a healthy body and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
The idea for a Paleolithic diet in the 20thcentury gained initial recognition when gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin wrote The Stone Age Diet in 1975. Voegtlin believed returning to a hunter-gatherer diet similar to that of Paleolithic humans would be a healthier option. Ten years later, Stanley Boyd Eaton and Melvin Konner delved into the Paleo eating style, and then in 2002 Loren Cordain published The Paleo Diet.
Going Paleo, your diet will consist of lean cuts of grass-fed beef, pork and lamb; free range poutry and eggs, organic vegetables and fruits, fish (wild caught is best) and seafood; healthy oils including olive, coconut and avocado; and some nuts and seeds. Dairy products, refined sugars, processed, smoked or cured foods (and yes, that includes bacon), foods with preservatives, unhealthy fats (refined vegetable oils), salt and starchy grains and potatoes are all off the table. Ideally, none of these non-Paleo foods are buried in the recesses of your cabinets. Its always best to avoid the temptation.
Weight loss and being healthy are always major motivators when we look for a new diet, a new way to eat and knock off those excess pounds. A 2019 YouTube video presentation by historian Hamilton Stapell of SUNY-New Paltz reviewed results of a 2013 survey he co-authored, to find out who followed the Paleo diet, and why. The primary motivations for subscribing to a Paleo diet for all responding were weight loss and health concerns. Stapell conducted a follow-up online survey in 2018 with 1,506 people responding. The primary reasons were weight loss and recovery from illness. To watch the video, type Stapells name in the YouTube search box.
For whatever reasons people follow a Paleo diet, or another, it all comes down to health. Thepaleodiet.comsays Paleo is the only one to which human beings are genetically adapted. According to the website, following this diet, you are giving your body what it really needs, the foods we are genetically programmed to eat. This kind of diet will reduce those hunger pangs, keep you feeling satisfied, which will lead to weight loss. The foods on this diet all have high nutrient density, or foods high in healthy nutrients and low in calories.
Where do you buy all of this grass-fed meat, free range poultry and eggs? Food cooperatives such as Rising Tide in Damariscotta, Good Tern Natural Foods Store in Rockland and Belfast Co-op in Belfast. Maine co-ops support local farmers. Check out the MOFGA website. You may be surprised to find out how many family farms there are in our state, and whose foods are at these cooperatives.
Some supermarkets sell grass-fed beef and free range products including Trader Joes and Whole Foods. Whole Foods goes a step further and requires all producers to meet specific and rigorous animal welfare standards that apply to all stages of an animals life and environment. For a list of Maine farms dedicated to the welfare of their stock, visit http://www.eatwild.com/products/maine.html
This all sounds great delicious even, but what if youre on a tight budget, living paycheck to paycheck? The paleoleap and thepaleodiet websites suggest using a slow cooker for shank, chuck, shoulder meats that usually cost less. Buy canned wild caught salmon, sardines and mackerel, but if you can buy any of these fresh it is still best.If you cannot buy organic fruits and vegetables, be sure to wash them, especially during the pandemic because people touch loose, displayed foods. And there are websites listing commercial growers who use little or no pesticides. And dont forget to visit epa.gov. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for making sure pesticides still used are safe for consumption and the environment. It evaluates all pesticides by conducting hundreds of different scientific studies.
Is it possible to reap the health benefits of the Paleo diet inexpensively? Yes. First, shop around the perimeter of your supermarket and youll find what you need. Buy the foods on the diet you can afford or eat just one or two meals of the fresh, grass-fed, free range foods preferred on the Paleo diet.
According to the Mayo Clinic website, there have been no long-term clinical studies about the benefits and possible risks of the Paleo diet. Talk to your doctor about it. He or she might have advice similar to the Mayo Clinic: You might be able to achieve the same health benefits by getting enough exercise and eating a balanced, healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables.
