Does intermittent fasting really work? – WION

Intermittent fasting is quite a fad these days. From celebrities to silicon valley CEOs - everyone is trying their luck with intermittent fasting.

What does it mean?

You fast for anything between 12 to 18 hours a day, and eat only in the remaining window. Intermittent fasting is being pitted as the elixir for a long lifespan.

A new study has found that intermittent fasting does not even help you lose weight to begin with.

From Instagram influencers to actors Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Aniston, everyone is a fan. As the name suggests intermittent fasting is about eating in intervals. For example, you eat for 8 hours a day and fast for the remaining 16.

In return, you are promised weight loss, a healthy heart, lower insulin resistance, reduction of inflammation, and a longer lifespan.

What makes intermittent fasting a hit is the fact that in the 8 hours of eating, you are allowed to eat anything.

A lot of people are taking up this challenge.There are apps helping people monitor their fast. In 2019, intermittent fasting was the top-trending diet search on Google.

However, a study has found that intermittent fasting does not help you lose weight. Led by a cardiologist from the University of California, San Francisco, he and his team recruited 116 people who were either overweight or obese, and divided them into 2 groups.

One ate at random times within a strict 8-hour window, and the other group ate at normal meal times. The group that was intermittent fasting lost an average of 2 pounds over 12 weeks. The group that was not intermittent fasting lost 1.5 pounds.

Researchers said this difference was not statistically significant.

To top that, some of the people who were fasting lost more muscle mass. A 2018 study found no significant difference between intermittent fasting for 50 weeks and following traditional diet with restricted calories.

A cardiologist who studied intermittent fasting experimented with it for 7 years.

But there are others who have lost weight. The list includes Chris Pratt, Kourtney Kardashian, Vanessa Hudgens and Scarlett Johansson.

People began adapting intermittent fasting after several studies showed results on mice. If mice lost weight, could humans be far behind?

AJ McLean’s Body Transformation since Joining DWTS How Much Weight Has He Lost? – AmoMama

Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean got candid about his physical transformation since joining season 29 of Dancing with the Stars and how much weight he has lost.

As season 29 of Dancing with the Stars continues, celebrity contestant AJ McLean has not only improved his dancing skills but has undergone an epic body transformation that has left his fans in awe.

McLean, whose partner is DWTS pro dancer Cheryl Burke, recently opened up about his journey in the dancing competition duringan interview with US Weekly.

The Backstreet Boys member noted that he had shed about 3.6 kg, losing almost 0.45 kg every week since he began training for the dancing show.

Burke, who joined him in the interview, noted that she has always urged her partner to eat. However, he claimed that he eats wellbut somehow still keeps losing weight every week.

McLean explained that he takes breakfast, after which comes a little portion of lunch and then dinner, but still he keeps losing weight. Talking about how the competition can immensely affect the body, Burke said:

I dont think people understand though how many calories [you burn]. Its not just you running on a treadmill [while training], so you end up burning way more calories.

For the 42-year-old singer, getting fit didnt start during Dancing with the Stars as he confirmed that he began working out to lose weight as early as March. By September shortly before he was announced as part of the cast, he had dropped a whopping 6.8 kg.

He unveiled his epic weight loss in a side by side photo of his before and after on Instagram. In the post, McLean was seen on the left looking fleshy while wearing a white v-neck and on the right looking fit in a white singlet. In the accompanying caption, the father-of-two wrote:

The transformation is unrecognizable and I couldnt be happier. Still got a way to go but now that Im dancing like I never have before its coming.

Fans may recall that the singer was announced as the second celebrity to join season 29 of DWTS in August. During an interview to discuss the announcement, McLean who has daughters Ava Jaymes, 7, and Lyric Dean, 3, with his wife of nine years, Rochelle, disclosed that his family was thrilled.

Student starts business selling traditional African waist beads – The Hawk

Inspired by her familys Ghanaian roots, Jala Cosley 22 started African Twist, an online business that sells traditional waist beads and other accessories.

For me, being born in the United States, I feel like Ive always [tried to] integrate African culture [into my style], Cosley said.

While waist beads, like the ones from African Twist, can be worn as a fashion statement, Cosley said they hold symbolic value as well.

In West Africa, waist beads are a big thing, Cosley said. They symbolize purity.

Cosley said they can also be used to track weight by monitoring the fluctuation in waist size.

Basically, say you gain weight, the waist beads dont stretch, Cosley said. Theyre not an elastic, so theyll rise [if you gain weight,] or if you lose weight, theyll lower.

Since launching the business, Cosley has expanded and started making anklets, bonnets and earrings. Prices for different items vary, but waist beads range in price from $18-25.

Other people, theyll sell [waist beads] and theyll be so expensive and then you break them and its like, Oh no, said Autumn Richardson 22, Cosleys friend and loyal customer. But [Cosleys] are actually durable and not super expensive, which is awesome.

According to Cosley, traditional waist beads are threaded on a cotton string and tied around a womans waist. She threads her glass beads on a metal wire to make sure they are durable. She will also customize a strand to a particular order. Cosley adds a metal clasp so that the beads can be removed and changed on a regular basis instead of having to be cut off. This way, they can match any outfit.

Cosley said that making a strand only takes 15-30 minutes and is actually a stress- reliever for her.

Many people think its so tedious and crazy to put all of those tiny beads on the string, Cosley said. But I personally find it really relaxing.

Cosley said she has made waist beads for her and her friends since she was in high school, but when more people started asking for them, she decided to start her business. Cosley has been operating for six months and is glad to have found a way to help people express and celebrate African culture.

I think its something that people should really try, especially if they want to show their Black or African pride, something that they can definitely show in a small way, Cosley said.

Richardson said that she has been wearing waist beads since she was 16 and has learned a lot because of them.

Once you get into it, you can actually learn about the cultural background and why people wear them, Richardson said. Thats where its kind of enlightening.

Asia Whittenberger 22, another one of Cosleys customers, said she wears waist beads for weight awareness. However, because she is not a Black woman, she thought carefully about her decision to wear them.

I dont have African roots, so in buying them I had to think about cultural appropriation, Whittenberger said. I came to the conclusion that Im not wearing them to be trendy or to show it off to people. Im wearing it for my own personal reasons.

Even though it is early on, Cosley is excited about whats in store for African Twist.

[The goal] is to see where God takes me, Cosley said.

Whittenberger said that she is proud to support African Twist and is excited to see how much it has expanded in the past few months.

Not only is she my close friend, but [supporting her] is supporting a small Black owned business, which is very important, Whittenberger said.

Goleta Playgrounds, Skate Park, Fitness Stations Are Open, But Be Careful Out There – Noozhawk

The city of Goleta has announced the re-opening of our playgrounds, skate park, and fitness stations to the community as of Friday, Oct. 9, after being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that Santa Barbara County has moved into the Red Tier in the states Blueprint for a Safer Economy, Goleta can reopen these facilities in accordance with new guidelines (see below).

We know the community has been eagerly awaiting the reopening of the citys many great playgrounds, beloved skate park, and outdoor fitness stations," said Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte. It has been a long six months without public access to these facilities, and we appreciate your patience.

We encourage our community members to abide by the rules so that we can keep them open for our residents to enjoy.

Park facility guidelines:

Park facilities (playgrounds, skate park, fitness stations) are open during regular park hours: sunrise to sunset, seven days a week.Everyone two years old and older must wear a face covering that goes over their mouth and nose.Maintain physical distance of six feet between individuals from different households and prevent crowding of children.

Do not use the playground, skate park, or fitness stations when different households are unable to maintain a physical distance of six feet on play structures, swings, and other playground equipment.

No food or drink permitted on the playground, skate park, or fitness stations.Wash or sanitize your hands before and after your visit.Visit a playground at different times or days to avoid crowds and waits (peak hours tend to be weekday afternoons and weekends, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.).

To avoid crowding and allow everyone to use this space, please limit visits to 30 minutes when others are waiting.

Elderly individuals and people with underlying medical conditions should avoid playgrounds when others are present.Organized group activities that include people outside of your household are not permitted and should not use the playground.Users of the skate park at Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park must comply with all of the new guidelines and the safety guidelines that were in affect prior to COVID-19, which include wearing a helmet and safety pads.

Playgrounds will not be staffed, so the city is relying on the community to abide by the guidelines above.

Safety is important. Playgrounds will be cleaned three times per week. Since it is not possible to clean all playground surfaces between every user, make sure every member of your group washes their hands or uses hand sanitizer before and after each playground visit.

In addition to bringing face coverings with you, it is a good idea to bring hand sanitizer and/or disinfecting wipes.

Raquel Reis dedication to fitness is already paying off for New Bedford field hockey – SouthCoastToday.com

No matter how much her teammates complained, Raquel "Rocky" Reis wasnt going to let them slow down.

It was still summertime, and the senior knew one thing would be paramount in the upcoming high school field hockey season: Stamina. So she was going to make sure New Bedford was the best-conditioned team each it time it took the field.

Thus, captain's practices this summer not only featured masks and social distancing, but a maniacal focus on running.

They would get a little annoyed by me with all the running, Reis laughed after scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 road win over Bishop Stang on Wednesday. They were like What are you doing? This is summer! And I was like Were going to be tired during the season!

Reis, a defender, enjoyed the fruits of that offseason work when she snagged a takeaway around New Bedfords own 25-yard line, then carried it the length of the field before sniping a shot from just inside the arc with 7:38 left in the third quarter.

Raquel is a great athlete. She has great skills. She has speed, said New Bedford coach Kathy Rezendes. When there was an opportunity to move up and switch, she did that and put the ball in the goal.

Reis ability to play from end line to end line might be one of the most important skills a player can posses this season, with teams playing 7 on 7 instead of the traditional 11 on 11.

Thats huge, said Bishop Stang coach Kara Caron. If you can run from one end of the field and not be completely exhausted by the time you get there and still have the energy to make something happen in the circle? Thats awesome."

Thats why Rezendes doesnt feel like she's wasting someone with Reis speed on her back line. In past years Reis played a center defender position that saw her playing up offensively with regularity. With only two defenders in the Whalers 2-2-2 alignment, now she has to carefully pick and choose her spots to attack without leaving the defense shorthanded.

I have her on defense because of all her attributes, Rezendes said. She can get back and clear out the ball. Not many balls get by Raquel.

Reis ensured she would into the season in tip-top shape with an offseason packed with Crossfit-style workouts in the small gym she has at home, in addition to regular running.

We were preparing to be very tired and very fatigued, she said. Conditioning was going to be important.

Reis feels like the fast-paced style brought on by the wide-open fields feeds right into New Bedfords strengths. Through two games, the Whalers are 2-0, havent allowed a goal and have put a combined 34 shots on net in wins over Stang and Durfee.

For us, thats what we like, Reis said. None of us have been playing field hockey for all of our lives. Were athletes who started playing field hockey in high school. Keeping that fast pace, constantly running and staying in shape is a benefit to us.

Caron felt her team was prepared for New Bedfords indomitable energy, but in the end the Whalers talent edge was too much to overcome in a game the Spartans were out-shot 17-2.

(New Bedford) has a lot of energy and they keep going and they dont get tired, Caron said. We knew that. We were ready for that. Our three defensive players have played together for a few years now and I feel like they knew what to expect.

CHANGES TO THE GAME

The two most significant changes to field hockey were the reduction in players on the field and the elimination of corners, which eliminates some of the best scoring chances in a given game.

No corners is a disadvantage because you have to pull it all the way out to the 25, Rezendes said.

The Spartans have played three games thus far and have started to develop a few strategies.

You really have to be on point with your passing and communicating because you dont have a lot of players out there, Caron said. You dont have as much reinforcement. You have to be aware and on point and communicating.

"Its been an adjustment to go 7 on 7 instead of 11 on 11, said Rezendes, whose team was in the midst of a three-games-in-three days stretch to open the season. We were a little more fatigued today, but I have good depth and I have players who can rotate in and out. My goal is to keep a fresh seven in there and push the ball as much as we can. So far, weve been doing that."

But considering how bleak the prospect of a season appeared just months ago, everyone is relieved to be simply be playing.

There was a point in the summer I was pretty set it wasnt going to happen, so I was very happy when they announced, Reis said. It just wouldnt have felt right. It wouldnt have felt like a full circle without getting my senior season. Im glad we get to play.

STRUGGLING TO SCORE

As well as the season has started for the Whalers (2-0, 1-0 Southeast Conference), their one struggle has been offensive efficiency. On 34 shots on net, New Bedford has just three goals.

Weve played against two great goalies these past two days, Reis said. To finally get the ball to sneak past felt good. It was refreshing.

Stang junior Maddie Kippe did, in fact, have an excellent game in front of the cage. She turned away all nine shots she faced in the first half and finished with 16 stops.

Maddie has been working really hard, Caron said. She plays field hockey year-round and she was ready. She knows they are a good offensive team. She was definitely ready.

Considering the quality of their opponents, Rezendes isnt worried about her team's scoring ability.

Were working really hard, she said. Weve had a lot of scoring opportunities. Weve been firing them on goal. Its not like we havent had shots. It's just a matter of putting them in the goal."

WHAT IT MEANS: New Bedford improves to 2-0 (1-0 Southeast Conference) while Bishop Stang falls to 1-1-1 (1-0-1 Catholic Central League). The Whalers played at Brockton on Thursday to cap a string of three games in 72 hours. The Spartans host St. Marys on Saturday.

REIS ON SCORING HER GOAL: It was definitely a relief once you get that goal to go up one. But I always tell the girls we have to play scared the whole time. Play like youre behind one goal. Once we did finally put one away, in my head I felt a little better, but that doesnt mean Im not going to play until the very end.

ALMOST A LEAD: The Spartans appeared to get on the board first with 4:30 left in the first quarter, but an apparent goal by Sara Pereira was waived off because she shot from outside the 25.

WHAT A START: New Bedford freshman goalie Lauren Mitchell made two saves for her second shutout in as many varsity starts. Mitchell is one of Mayor Jon Mitchells two daughters who play on the team, along with senior forward Natalie Mitchell.

Matt Beard: Squad fitness, depth and Everton – West Ham United F.C.

Matt Beard is anticipating a good test for his West Ham United side when they travel to face Everton on Sunday.

The Irons return to Barclays FA Womens Super League action away to a Toffees side that have won all three of their league matches so far, scoring eleven goals without reply.

The head coach knows Willie Kirks team will be a difficult opponent on this weekend but feels his Hammers side have the quality to compete with the best teams in the division.

Everton have a lot of experience in their squad so it will be a difficult challenge, but I feel with the team weve built here, we can compete with anyone.

With Katerina Svitkova, Laura Vetterlein and Cho So-hyun all also absent due to knocks, Beard is hopeful of having a fully fit squad to choose from when his team returns from the international break.

He continued: After the international break were going to hopefully have everyone back fit, which will be great for us.

If you look at the talent weve got missing right now in Martha Thomas, Hawa Cissoko, Cho So-hyun, Laura Vetterlein and Katerina Svitkova, were without five players who would be fighting for a place in the starting XI.

The depth in our squad is good though. We did well on Wednesday and we did well against Reading too, albeit we didnt take our chances. I think that shows the depth we have in the group now and that everyone has a role to play.

This is a group that is really together, and things do take a little time. We all need to be patient and their relationships will develop, and we can compete with any team in this division.
