An obese resident of the Australian city of Melbourne, Victoria, described a proven way to lose 98 kilograms. Her words are quoted by the edition Nine.com.au.
In April 2019, 38-year-old Laura Benacchio took a cruise to New Zealand and contracted bronchitis. She spent the entire journey in a cabin. After that incident, I could not recover in any way, she recalls. I was constantly sick and knew that being overweight was one of the reasons for this state of health.

Benaccio works as a nurse on the night shifts. Her deteriorating health increasingly interfered with her work. Even my colleagues constantly paid attention to my health and asked if everything was in order, she notes. For a long time, the woman was embarrassed to join the weight loss program, although its participants promised to support and encourage each other. She decided to take part when she was already barely leaving the house.
Benaccio, who weighed 191 kilograms, began the process of losing weight on June 6, 2019. She managed to lose 98 kilograms in a year. The hardest part at first was playing sports, because I was in very bad shape, she says. But I started with small walks to the mailbox and back. Besides, I switched to proper nutrition.
Benaccio used to neglect cooking, replacing homemade meals with unhealthy snacks at work. Since I work night shifts, I ate the most unhealthy food at night and then came home and went to bed, she recalls. Then I woke up and everything repeated. The Australian woman is now feeling better than ever.
Earlier it was reported that a resident of the Indian city of Vadodara, Gujarat, lost 28 kilograms in three months and ten days and shared the secret of success. The man completely eliminated sugar from his diet and gave up fried foods, and also began to go to bed earlier.

Throughout several of his previous fitness and weight loss challenges, YouTuber Brendan Jones has struggled with consistency and frequently found that he would end up putting back on the weight that he would lose. In his latest video, he outlines the three lessons he has learned which have helped him to maintain his weight loss in a healthy and sustainable way.
Jones cites non-stop "hustle culture" as a major factor in his repeated weight gain, as he was cultivating unhealthy habits and not allowing himself an appropriate amount of rest. "Even when I was able to keep up with my workouts and exercise in a 50 or 60-hour work week, all that time working, commuting and exercising meant I was cutting into my sleep," he says.
When your sleep recovery is depleted, it can affects your personal health in a number of ways. Firstly, a lack of sufficient sleep has an impact on ghrelin and lipten, the hormones which regulate hunger and fullness, and also tends to lead to cravings for foods that are high in salt, sugar and fat. Additionally, working out after a poor night's sleep may result in the body burning more lean mass rather than fat.
"For a long time, I got really caught up in the idea of cardio via cycling and running, with clear distance and time objectives, thinking that was how you build endurance and improve," he says. "Then I started using a fitness wearable to track my workouts when I went to shoot hoops or play frisbee, and practically every time I was engaged in a sport, I was producing results that were just as strenuous, if not more, than when I was getting in that diligent long-distance running."
Now, Jones uses a combination of long-distance, measured cardio and sports to ensure that he's staying on track with his goals while making the experience more enjoyable overall.

Jones recalls how previously, he would focus on eating clean, but more recently he has made it a point to simply eat well and in moderation, while sticking to an intermittent fasting routine.
"I know a lot of people have success with tracking calories and monitoring their portions, but it's a habit I've never been able to stick with personally," he says. "Instead, I've found having clear times where I'm not eating has really done the equivalent for me, placing restrictions on how much I eat as I'm cutting out all evening snacks. While I do try to make sure I hit targets for proteins and vitamins each day, I still have the flexibility to eat stuff I really enjoy."

We know that we need to exercise and eat well to live healthy lives but for some, we need that extra motivation to uplift us to work out and eat healthy. If you have fun when you work out it wont feel like work.
Whens the last time you had a good laugh while working out? We were actually talking the other day about the faces we make in the gym (Gym Face!) and some are always smiling through the sweat but most have that serious, determined look when they are working out.We suffer at times from resting gym face. That look we hope shows how committed we are to what we are doing.
We should think of exercise as a way to have fun and be healthy. Many times we only think of it as a way to lose weight. When all we focus on is losing weight, if we dont see immediate results, we get frustrated and many times, quit.
You know friends make fitness more fun. And when we work out with friends or in a group, youll find that laughter that draws people together in ways that trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress.
Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hope, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. It also helps you release anger and forgive sooner.
As kids, we used to laugh hundreds of times a day, but as adults, life tends to be more serious, especially now, and laughter more infrequent. But by seeking out more opportunities for humor and laughter, you can improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, find greater happinessand even add years to your life.
With all the ups and downs, the emotional, physical and economic turmoil the past six months it can feel like we are being caught in a storm that seems to never end. WARNINGexercise has been known to cause health and happiness. Why be moody when you can shake your booty?
I was reading that the number one secret to happiness isnt fame, money, or freedom. Its progress. Progress = happiness.Happiness comes from setting a goal, and moving towards it, step by step. People with fitness goals succeed because they know where theyre going. We should all strive for progress, not perfection. Some quit because they feel progress is too slow, never really grasping the fact that slow progress is still progress! Be proud of every step you take toward your goal.
The question now is, are you ready to start your fitness journey? It will take time. It will require dedication. It will require willpower. You will need to make healthy decisions. Yes, there will be temptations. But, I promise you, the journey to better health is worth it.
Time and health are two precious assets that we dont recognize or appreciate until they have been depleted. Strong is what happens when you run out of weak. Remember, fitness is not a destination. Its not a goal that you check off your list. Its not a sprint to the finish. Its not a lifestyle or a fad. It more than a way of life. Fitness is a way to LIVE.

5 Tips to Eat Healthier by a Chef Who Lost 50 Lbs on a Vegan Diet – The Beet

Suzi Gerber went plant-based and lost 50 pounds, and cured her chronic pain linked to an autoimmune disease, and during her journey, she started a brand called Plant-Based Gourmet, began working with brands that needed vegan content and consulting,and changed her life for the better. So you might say she lost the animal product and found her true calling. But it's not the typical tale of discovery since first she had a stint as a vegan at a young age, then modified her views, and then returned to a plant-based lifestyle. Here is her story, including her five tips to help you eat healthier too.
SG: "I actually started out at a young age as an activist. I was a super rabid hard-core PETA vegan in the 90s, during my pre-teens. I started way back when I was about 9 and my sister moved to New York and I would visit her at Columbia, and since she went vegan shortly thereafter, I did too. She didn't stick with it long but I did, for several years, during most of the 90s. I was going to PETA protests and shouting at people coming out of fur stores.
"Back thenit was about animal rights and all I ate were french fries, fried rice and potato chips. There was little else available for vegans to eat, so it was not like today.
"When I think back on that time, all they had for vegans were Tofuti ice cream sandwiches, which were a big thing, and Tofurky, which made these Tofurky hot dogs. They tasted like rubber and were disgusting compared to what these products all taste like now. Then the only milk was soy or rice milk and even those were hard to find. Certainly, vegan or plant-based food was not served in restaurants or cafs. You'd be hard-pressed to find in grocery stores. Boca Burgers then were more like hockey pucks.
SG: "Toward the end of the 90s, Isa came out with 'Post Punk Kitchen.'It was the first project I'm aware of from Isa Chandra Moskowitz and she would post recipes on it. So back when blogging was an esoteric thing most people didn't do it she showed us how to eat this way.
I" stopped being vegan in 2,000 during my final year of high school, when my family doctor said I'll never be healthy if I stayvegan.I was overweight. And the implicit message was I'll never be thin. My mother is an accomplished doctor. She is petite and thin and blue-eyed and skinny. And to my mother, who is already worried [about my health], when she hears this she is now really worried that I will never be healthy, and its the end of the world. So overnight I gon on Atkins.
"I am on this diet that requires stacks of deli meat, muscle meat, and almost nothing else. Meat all of the time. That obviously didn't last very long. I didn't lose weight on that diet. It is possible that I losta small amount of weight, but it was so short-lived I don't even remember it. I definitely carried with me that if I dropped carbs, I should lose weight.
SG: "Abandoning that diet I sort of decided to try different things. I had lapsed into an omnivorous diet. Over the next couple of years, I experimented with different diets. As I got older, my tendency was to avoid certain things while still being an omnivore. I tried all the things, since I was living in Manhattan, training with Anthony Bourdain, and when you are doing that, you are not eating anything that looks like a healthy diet. It's a different approach to food. You focused on quality -- not nutritional quality but dietary quality.
SG: In my late 20s I started to exhibit some weird neuromuscular side effects. One day I was working at the textile museum and reshelving books and I started to feel an intense feeling. I expected to see my arm swollen to four times normal size since it was in searing pain and I looked down and my arm looked totally normal.
"So I went in for the Cadillac of medical testing: EEGs and EKGs and they looked for all of the inflammatory markers. Most of the tests were inconclusive. But anyone who said they had pain back then, was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It's essentially central sensitization. Normal everyday activitiesthat most people do in working outcause what's known as "micro-tears" in the muscle which then builds stronger muscles and get fitter. These tiny tears are normaland happen when you're the gym and you work out and you get sore ... but with me these were felt so badly and I would be in such pain after doing anything, it felt like my immune system was attacking my cells. Central sensitization means your system is receiving all these pain signals at the same time and theyare unbearable. So someone just barely touchingmy toe would feel like an injury. My girlfriend just touching my arm felt like major pain.
"The first summer I became chronically illand by February it was debilitating and I spent the rest of the year basically bedridden. Still, I moved to New York for grad school and nobodythought I would be able to live on my own but I did. I chose an apartment within a block of where I went to school. I had to make those choices.
"Several years later I had tried everything under the sun, every diet and every treatment, and the last treatment I did was a book by Dr. Norman Marcus... End Back Pain Forever. His therapy was the only piece that was marginally helpful. You would go in every week and they would inject lidocaine in the muscles but you had to keep doing it. I even took ketamine, which is reallyintense. I felt betterbutit was reallyextreme, and I didn't want to keep taking all this stuff."
SG: "Yes! I read an early study about a plant-based diet for autoimmune diseases. I thought: This was new. My husband decided to do it with me. In one week I felt better. We both went plant-based and after years of dealing with pain, it got better.
I had been vegan before but I had done the wrong way, then I went omnivore and that's when I got sick, but it was when I went on a whole food plant-based healthy vegan diet that I got cured quickly.
"By the end of the second week, I had no symptoms and by the end of one month, I was off my medications, Including morphine, Neurontin and gabapentin, and all the other major narcotics. Vicodin ... for the years I had been sick. It was like I had flipped a switch I just didn't need all this pain medication anymore. I could have been off it within two and three weeks.And I mean entirely. I just didn't need it anymore."
SG: Yes. As soon as I went on my normal diet but a plant-based version, the weight just fell off me. At my peak, I was 210 pounds, and my lowest, I was 140. I had never been lower than 150 in my life. It was unimaginable. Now my weight maintainsanywhere from 150 to 155 and I am at a normal healthy weight for my height.
"I was definitely overweightsince I weighed 50 pounds more than I do now. But when I went vegan (the healthy way) it just dropped off. The latest thing is now I hate the scale and it's just about whether I feel or look my best. The priority now has become about being healthy.
"I knew on some level this was better because It came together. ... things came together and reinforcing that is the goal,... I have now been a healthy vegan for 8 years.Myfavoritething to eat is a plate full of corn and broccoli. other times I'll use some vegan cheese and make a plate of mac and cheese. I don't log what I eat. I recognize that whole foods are the goal every day."
SG: "There are some mental hacks that you can use that come from key behavioral theory. The place I start is always: What does the behavioral theory around diet say, to help usimplement a new behavior that can show demonstrable changes depending on your goal?
Tip 1: Don't Expect InstantResults. "What I mean by that is definitely diet will give you ups and downs. And you need to know why you are doing it.Name some long term and short term goals.Having a plan for a short-term goal is important, and envision what that looks like. Don't just fantasize about eating Twinkies all night. Replace that short term goal with another image. Maybe it's how you'll feel in a new pair of jeans or something else that is a reward.
Tip 2: Prepare to prepare."Set yourself up for success. If you sit down to cook dinner, that's awesome and healthy and full of fresh vegetables and whole grains, that is a form of self-care. You're probably going to eat it then but that doesn't necessarily help you tomorrow. And it's easy to get off track with a busy day. Use Sunday to prepare. I get animperfect food box every week and when I open it and unpack it, I do a little bit of prep, like chop the veggies as I unpack the box. So instead of grabbing a frozen pizza out of the freezer, when dinner time rolls around you now have veggies and it's easier to throw together a healthy rice and pepper dish. I always say: Keep a salad bar in your fridge. This is what restaurants do by the way.
"You can do 30 minutes a day or 3 hours of cooking session on a Sunday. But prepare.
Tip 3: Shop for Success. "Keep a healthy supply of the foods that are good for you on hand. Today, all I had was truffle popcorn, so that is what I ate. I'm not going to beat myself up about it. My priority is to get back to work and to a meeting. But if I had set myself up for success... I would have eating better.
"That means for me, always have a fruit bowl on hand. Reach for a pear, or a piece of fruit. I try to go for foods that have high water and fiber content like fruits and vegetables. They're more filling, so a pear compared to a banana is more water. The banana will not leave you as full after eating it. The body digests it quicker .. but also the experience is that you will get thirsty before you get hungry, so water is helping to curb appetite. Discover what works for you rather than what you think is healthy.
"Celery a negative food and awesome for filling you up, but if you don't like celery, you are going to grab the Snickers bar instead. If not celery then figure out what you like to eat that's healthy: It may be carrots butthose have more sugar. But if you will eat the carrots and not the celery then have the carrots on hand. Same thing for fruit: If you will eat the banana and not the apple then have the banana. Otherwise, you're going to eat the Twix bar."
Tip 5: Know Your Goals vs Success. "This is a really hard concept to get at first but a really important one. When you say something is healthier or healthy you are comparing it to something else. But if you compare the nutritional benefit to a pear, then the pear has more nutritional benefits from the banana, but only in some categories.
"If your goal is to eat more potassium, then the banana helps more than the pear, but if it's fiber then it's the pear. Goals are individual and change hour to hour. But success is not defined by how you adhere to rules. When I think of a healthy diet vs. an optimal diet, a healthy diet is better for you, aiming at a certain set of goals. If the goal is weight loss then getting rid of some carbs works but is it an optimal diet? If you are not able to enjoy life then that is not right for you.
"A lot of diets are aimed at a comprehensive plan, of what you can or can't eat. If you have high cholesterol you take a statin. But there are nutritional ways to ameliorate damages to your blood vessels, but doctors don't recommend a plant-based diet because they don't think you are going to do it. Some doctors believe if they recommend something to you that you will not do that they are setting .the bar too high. So instead they give you a drug.
There is a tool for high cholesterol and hypertension and then there is diet. When we talk about a plant-based diet being the most optimal what we mean is that when you switch you will be able to declare your medical dependence. If the goal is to get off your medication and not see doctors all the time, then aiming for an optimal diet is what I call success. So the differentiation between a goal and success is crucial. You need to set your goal and know how you define success."
Here's a Bonus Tip:"Do what I call 'The Dailies' which is to take an inventory. Are you able to cook for yourself today? Answer Yes or No. Are you in need of a Netflix and ice cream night? People think you have to be good all the time. But that's not the case. Most people have a Sunday cheat day and that works for them, but for others, it's a slippery slope. Do you think that every time you eat a donut its a runaway train? Then put it all on Sunday [and make it the relaxed eating day] so it is not something that takes down the whole ship. But for me, I think you should give yourself permission to cheat, and not stress, because if you should understand it's a treat, and not an all-day everyday food choice it's easy to get back on track. So maybe get rid of the anxiety we sometimes get around eating that donut.
"So if you have a cup of coffee, did you also have a cup of water to balance it out. Caffeine and salt both lead to dehydration. So you need to keep an inventory of your day and ask yourself: Have I had enough water today? And if not, the question is what is your strategy for getting water into your diet. You can drink more or you can choose high-water foods or enjoy some sparkling water. I now have a Camelback hydration system, and I drink all day from it. So now my daily intake of water went from 3/4 of a liter to 3 liters. I have it all the time because I love the straw. iI's my new purse. Anything you can do to make life easier for yourself, just do it."
And I also do drink Lemon Water first thing every morning. Studies show that having it within 30 minutes of eating is beneficial to your digestion. So now I do that every day.
The dailies are the things you do every day, And they are the difference between short-term success and longer-term success.Give yourself a daily assessment. It's a mindfulness activity as well. Without saying meditateI would say be thoughtful about your food plan daily.

The way the diet works is pretty simple. By drastically reducing carbohydrates and replacing themwith fat, yourbody is put in a metabolic state called ketosis.Being in this state makes your body really good at burning fat for energy, and this type of diet is also great at reducing blood sugar and insulin levels.
There are various forms of the Ketogenic diet. However, they all follow the main basic principle: fewer carbs and more fat. There is the Standard ketogenic diet, which can be broken down as 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs; High-protein ketogenic diet, which has a 15% increase in protein and a corresponding decrease in fat consumption; Cyclical ketogenic diet, which allows you to have two days a week of eating more carbs; and Targeted ketogenic diet, that allows you to add carbs around a workout.
When on a Ketogenic diet, there is only a certain amount of food you are permitted to eat. This includes meat, particularly red meat, and pork, as well as fatty varieties of fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Eggs are good to have, as well as cheese like cheddar and mozzarella. Avocados are also very worthwhile food to eat on this diet, as there are lots of health benefits when it comes to consumingavocados.
It may sound strange, due to other diets encouragement of high fruit and vegetable consumption, but for the Keto diet, its critical that you avoid all fruit and root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and parsnips. Sugary food is also a no-go, as sugar is just a form of carbohydrates, which also means you should avoid wheat-based products like pasta. Its also important that you avoid alcohol, as due to its carb content you would turn the ketosis process off.
There are negatives tothis diet, however, and the main one is that for it to work, it needs to be followed strictly. If not, your body will fail to entera ketogenic state, meaning that youll actually store the fats youre eating, making you put on weight. It can also make you feel extremely tired and fatigued when you first start the diet, and could also see you get an increase of headaches and muscular pain.

She has also courageously opened up about her struggle with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition that made it difficult for her to lose weight after her "very slim" twenties.

Although Gemma has already shifted a few stone, her weight loss journey might not be over yet - as her sights are set on shedding more.
She said: "I'd be really happy if I lost six stone as that would bring me down to 12 stone and a size 16."
But for the moment, The GC is feeling healthier than ever. And as she recently told her fans: "Your health is your wealth."

Almost 300,000 people have opened the tool to check their risk of type 2 diabetes online less than two months after the NHS fast tracked access to its world leading Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme.
The latest statistics display that 291, 325 people used the Diabetes UK Know Your Risk tool since the end of July, a 637% surge compared to two months previously.
Access to the programme was increased following new findings that people are twice as likely to die from Covid-19 if they have type 2 diabetes.
Over 5,000 people have now self-referred for support to lose weight and prevent the onset of type 2 and the programme has capacity to support 5,000 people every week.
The NHS is now urging even more people who are at risk to check their risk and sign up.
People can use the online test, hosted by Diabetes UK, to analyse their risk to developing the condition by responding to basic questions including age, weight and ethnicity.
If their score comes back as adequately high, they can refer themselves to a local service for support remotely or online, without having to go through a healthcare professional.
Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity said: The fact that two thirds of our nation live with being overweight or obese coupled with the increased risk of more severe outcomes from coronavirus means that there has never been a better time to lose weight, exercise more and eat more healthily.
Its great to see so many people becoming more aware of their personal risk level, but we want to see even more people signing up to the support we have available. It is free and could be life-changing.

SQUEEZING a work out into our busy schedules can sometimes be stressful and time consuming.
New data has revealed that completing long-awaited DIY projects around the house could help you lose weight with some tasks burning over 400 calories.
It was recently revealed that millennial homeowners have done the most work around the house while they have been stuck inside during the coronavirus lockdowns.
The new research states that getting stuck into chores could also help you shift the pounds.
Researchers found that tasks such as building furniture and doing the gardening could help you on your weight loss journey.
In order to determine which DIY tasks burnt the most calories researchers gave three men and three women FitBits to wear and tracked how many calories they burnt when doing tasks around the house.
The three men weighed 84.9kg (13st 3lbs) and the three women weighed 72.8kg (11st 4lbs), these weights are classed as the average weight for men and women by the NHS Health Report.
They were then instructed to wear the FitBits for 15 days.
The data from the FitBits revealed that sanding burnt the most calories per hour with women burning on average 392 calories and men burning 456.
This exercise was class as "high" when FitBit logged how intense it was.
According to Kane Hughes, expert at MyJobQuoteUK, sanding is something most people can do.
He said: If youre sanding furniture, such as tables and chairs, this can usually be done with sand paper and can take half a day for a whole dining room set.
Others in the high intensity group included carpentry, which burnt 383 calories for women and 438 for men.
Kane cautioned that some carpentry tasks should be left to professionals.
"With carpentry, hanging doors and installing door frames is best left to a professional carpenter as it has to be done correctly and measured perfectly, to ensure your doors open properly.
"To hang a door takes about twenty minutes to an hour and installing door frame will take around the same amount of time."
Tiling was also a fat burner with women burning 362 calories and men burning 419.
Next on the list was painting, and if you're looking to give your home a fresh new look then you could also burn 354 calories if you're a woman and 386 if you're a man.
Plastering was also in the hard category and women can burn up to 351 calories with the task, while men can burn 379.

Looking at moderate exercises and pruning the roses and getting out in the garden could help women burn 306 calories, while men can burn up to 337.
Kane added: "Weeding is easy to complete yourself and can take a couple of hours a month.
"Something more technical, like tree trimming or removing a tree stump, its better to hire a contractor as its safer for them to complete as they know what theyre doing (and may need the use of power tools) and shouldnt take more than a day to complete.
Cleaning the gutters will help women burn 268 calories, while it will help men shift 312.
If you're looking to sort your fences out in time for winter then getting outside and dealing with them could help you burn 261 calories if you're a woman and 286 for men.
And if you're looking to save money on calling the plumber out then perhaps it's time for you to get under the sink yourself.
Women could burn around 252 calories while men could burn 274 for fixing leaky pipes.

For those of us who don't want to go all out and over exert ourselves, there is also a range of chores you can complete which will still help you burn over 300 calories.
If you've been reading a lot of books during the coronavirus lockdown, then it's likely you will need somewhere to store them.

My quarantine weight went in the opposite direction.
Yep, somehow during lockdown, I managed to lose weight instead of gain it. How on earth did that happen?
I stumbled into intermittent fasting.
This eating pattern has gained traction in the last few years, but it never grabbed my attention because, frankly, it sounded awful.
Skip meals - what? Why would I ever want to do that?
Well, a growing body of research suggests the benefits of intermittent fasting are numerous.
It turned out to be the easiest way Ive ever lost weight.
It didnt start on purpose.
I found myself without an appetite from worry in the early days of the pandemic, so Id skip breakfast and sometimes lunch, then eat when I got hungry again.
Sound unhealthy?
When I spoke with Dr Mark Mattson, a neuroscientist and expert on intermittent fasting and co-author of a recent New England Journal of Medicine article on its benefits, he explained that its actually only relatively recently that humans began eating three meals a day.
Prior to the agricultural revolution, he explained, humans couldnt store food in the way we do now that enables us to graze and snack 24/7.
I rarely weigh myself, so I didnt realise what was happening until my pants grew looser.
Intrigued, I started looking more into intermittent fasting, as its sometimes called, and fell down the rabbit hole.
Since it had seemed so easy, I decided to continue it with purpose, choosing to fast from dinner until any time between noon and dinnertime again the next day, depending on how I felt.
Another approach to fasting involves eating normally five days a week and limiting calories to about 500 on two non-consecutive days.
In the space of a couple of months, Id lost about 6.8kg (based on the last time Id been weighed at the doctors office) with my intermittent fasting plan.
I dialled back the number of long fasting days but continued to skip breakfast, and another two kilos eventually came off, bringing me down two clothing sizes to the size Ive been most of my life - when I havent let the weight creep up on me like I had in the year leading up to this, that is.
I kept wondering why I never knew how easy this could be.
Was I hungry? Sure. But not hangry, and that I could handle.
Ive tried - and hated - calorie counting in the past.
This was dead simple; when it was time to eat I ate until I was full, mostly avoiding empty white flour carbs and processed food.
If I got too hungry, I skipped fasting.
It grew easier with time, which is typical, Mattson said. If people are going to adapt, it takes about a month to adjust.
Why was this so wildly effective? And is intermittent fasting healthy? It boils down to several factors.
Even though weight loss isnt as simple as calories in, calories out, Samantha Cassetty, a registered dietitian based in New York City, said that just by virtue of only eating once a day on fasting days, I was still consuming fewer calories.
Those meals, especially the first few months, were also almost exclusively prepared at home, away from restaurants where she noted portions are bigger, and theres just no way to know how much fat and sugar is in a dish.
But unlike a more typical diet of reducing calories at each meal, I was also changing my eating pattern, reducing the size of the window when Id eat.
Through this change, something more than simple calorie maths is going on.
When we eat, the energy from the food is stored in our livers in the form of glucose, Mattson explained.
The liver holds about 700 calories of that glucose, and with normal daily activity, will burn through about 70 calories an hour.
That means if we are eating every few hours and snacking between meals, we never burn through all of it.
Fast for longer than 10 to 12 hours, though, Mattson said, and the body switches from burning glucose to burning fat.
Thats the magic moment, as I understand it.
The fat cells go into the liver where theyre converted to ketones.
That switch, Mattson said, from glucose to ketones, is what will allow people and animals to survive for days or longer without food.
As far as weight loss its pretty simple, Mattson said.
If people are overweight that excess weight is fat, and if they do intermittent fasting, then they will use up fat during the fasting period.
As long as they dont overeat ... theyll lose weight.
Intermittent fasting shows other benefits as well.
The most intriguing to me was that the mild stress it places on cells is analogous to the stress exercise puts on muscle cells.
Having been subjected to that mild stress the cells change in ways that help them become stronger and resist more severe types of stress, Mattson said.
It sounds like a no brainer. If you can handle being hungry a few hours a day, why not do it?
Well, its not for everyone. And there can be drawbacks.
Theres a high dropout rate to this pattern of eating, Cassetty said.
For some, prolonging a period of not eating can make people feel very tortured, hungry and distracted, and it doesnt promote productivity, energy, vitality and all those wonderful feelings, she said.
There can also be missed social opportunities, such as dining with family and friends.
And if youre exercising, theres a concern you may not be refuelling your body adequately to repair broken down muscle tissue, she said.
For older folks in particular, she added, its critical to replenish protein stores so the body can go into its maintenance and repair mode at night.
But if youre a healthy person and want to give it a try, its OK to experiment, said Cassetty.
However, she also added, if you have any health conditions you need to talk to a doctor before you do this.
A 12-hour eating window is a good place for most people to start, Cassetty said.
And if you want to take it a step further, try a 16-hour fasting window on a weekend when you might be sleeping through more of the fast.
But Cassetty also emphasised that fasting isnt an excuse to throw good nutrition out the window.
It remains important to fill your plate with non-starchy vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats.
And if its a success? Sorry, but theres really no off switch.
Maintaining the weight loss means continuing intermittent fasting.
For me, at least, knowing that its relatively easy to do means thats not a concern.
Through this change Ive set up some structure, essentially eliminating snacking.
Ive become much more in touch with my bodys signals, learning when Im actually hungry and when Im grabbing food just to have it.
I dont feel deprived because I know if Im actually hungry Ill eat, and Ill eat well.
