Members are working out once again at Power of Fitness in Palm Desert.
Those who spoke with News Channel 3 said at least now they can resume their fitness routines interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
"I think it's great. People need to get out and exercise and keep a healthy lifestyle you know," said club member Leo Valenzuela.
The news also took the weight off the shoulders of health club operators, including Ken Ebner.
Ebner says for most of the past 6 months his 2,900 members were not being charged their monthly dues, while most of his expenses continued.
He is now left with what he calls "heavy debt".
"We've been able to squeak by as they say. The reopening helps us out a lot so now we can start to get back to business," said Ebner.
The sign on the wall of the main workout area showed "maximum occupancy" for the space is one 179.
Ebner says he and his staff are ready to enforce the ten percent limit for th number of people working out.
They also have some cardio machines taped off to help members maintain proper social distancing.
Ebner says the steps they're taking to protect members and staff include adding additional hand sanitizer dispensers, doubling their cleaning schedule and requiring members to carry towels to be used for wiping down machines.
Gyms and health clubs in the county were allowed to reopen for about four weeks in June, but were ordered to close indoor activities again when the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the county spiked.
Ebner hopes it doesn't happen again.
"It has been very tough for the past six months. I hope this is the final phase of the shutdown. We'll have to see," said Ebner.
The health clubs hours are also reduced.
Weekday hours are 5:00 am to 9:00 pm.
Weekends it's 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Founded by an Olympian, Eat The Frog Fitness celebrates one year of offering 24/7 classes, personalized training in Carmel – CBS 4 Indianapolis

CARMEL, Ind. In college, there was the Freshman 15 but nowadays were hearing more and more about the dreaded Quarantine 15. And when it comes to fitness, there are plenty of options out there but do they fit your schedule?
Originally co-founded in 2014 by Olympic decathlon gold and silver medalist, Bryan Clay, Eat The Frog Fitness is a high-tech, personalized group fitness studio that sets itself apart by offering classes 24-hours a day.
We decided to check out the Carmel location which opened just over a year ago off Pennsylvania Street near Carmel Driveto see what its all about.
Were hopping back into fitness on this tripIn Your Neighborhood.
Eat The Frog is actually a quote from Mark Twain, who said If your job is to eat a frog, its best to do it first thing in the morning, explained Eat The Frog Fitness Carmel owner and general manager, Daniel Frausto. Which basically means that you have to do the most difficult task of the day first and the day is only going to get better after that so stop procrastinating and just do it.
For some, that first task is a workout.
And since not all schedules are the same, Eat The Frog Fitness is open 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, with both in-person coach led-classes and in-studio virtual classes.
We have 2 big IMAX screens in the room so they can follow the prompt from those IMAX screens, said Frausto. The IMAX screens are prescribing the class, how much time you have left of a particular exercise, how many repetitions, what exercise is coming up next and what your heart rate target should be at.
Four Things You Need to Know About Eat The Frog Fitness:
The studio itself is divided in two different sides.
On the right side, we have what you call the traditional side, where we have the low-impact equipment including Keiser spin bikes and Concept2 rollers, he said. On the other side of the studio, thats what we call the functional side. We have TRX straps and Alpha sandbags to do the functional component.
Classes are about 55-minutes long and differentiated by three different formats: cardio, strength and agility.
During the workout, you can monitor your heart rate and progress on the big screens using their Frog Pod heart rate monitor.
But Frausto says the monitoring feature is less about the competition aspect than it is about tracking their effort and progress.
All of our members go through a fitness assessment so we can understand the baseline fitness level, their fitness goals, and based on that we give them a personalized fitness plan for the next 8 weeks, he said. And we continue to reassess every 8 weeks so they can track their progress objectively.

Bicycle racks are full as commuters avoid public transportation during London's coronavirus lockdown in May. (Getty Images)
LONDON Active travel is booming in Britain as millions of commuters, shoppers and schoolchildren get on their bikes to avoid confined spaces on public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic, data from the fitness tracker app Strava showed on Wednesday.
The city of Liverpool saw the greatest year-on-year rise in cycling, with an increase of more than 220% for people taking at least one trip by bike.
The UK data, seen exclusively by Reuters, also showed the peak of Britain's cycling popularity growth surge came in May 2020, coinciding with the height of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions across Britain.
Strava spokesman Gareth Nettleton said the app is now making data freely available to local authorities to help them plan improvements to cycle paths and streets to enable more people to replacecarjourneys and choose to ride, jog or walk instead.
"We're desperate for this not to be a COVID blip," Nettleton told Reuters. "We're doing this now - making the data available - because the only way this doesn't become a COVID blip is if infrastructure gets improved on the back of what's happening right now.
"This is about how we create infrastructure so that active travel is a viable alternative, not just for those in lycra who go for long distances, but for anybody doing the nursery drop-off or going to the shops."
The data showed that London, where cycle commuting was also growing in popularity before the pandemic, ranked fifth in Strava's growth table, with a rise of 119% behind Manchester at 169%, Glasgow 146% and Birmingham 134%.
Across the country as a whole, the analysis which compared the overall number of people traveling by bike in May 2020 with the same period in 2019 found that cycling rose by 162%.
Chris Boardman, a former Olympic cycling gold medallist and now a campaigner for active travel, also urged urban planners to seize the opportunity to take the cycling trend "from a lockdown spike into a long-term solution for the country".

Bay Area fitness community moves from yoga studios to paddleboards in the pandemic
Its 6 a.m. on a recent Saturday. The Sausalito waterfront sky is dim. Steve Hayward, Seatreks Fitness Program Manager, is here early to check the air quality monitor on the porch outside his office. If the Air Quality Index (AQI) is 140 and rising toward the red zone, he starts sending texts and emails, cancelling upcoming paddleboarding and kayaking reservations.
Leigh Claxton, who shares the dock and teaches classes for Seatrek, is one of the folks waiting to hear from Hayward. Poor air quality is the latest significant issue Claxton has navigated this year. Her unusual-sounding business, however, is managing just fine.
That business, under the Seatrek umbrella, is called OnBoardSUP, which brings yoga out of the studio and onto paddleboards. (SUP stands for stand-up paddleboarding.) Its an idyllic-sounding combination if youre coordinated, anyway and was among the first fitness classes in the area to re-open after the COVID-19 shutdown. Working with the Marin County Health Department, Seatrek implemented localized safety protocols including sanitizing equipment and extended business hours to limit groups to no more than 15. Instead of walk-ins, reservations are now required.

While gyms are shuttered and team sports are on hold, many people have hit the water and opted to attempt a relatively safe, socially distant outdoor exercise. All over the world, kayaking, paddleboarding and bicycling is up, Hayward says. What else are you going to do for exercise? Sure enough, according to the market research group NPD, paddle sports saw a 56% increase in sales in June 2020 compared with June 2019. Claxton, whos been teaching for 11 years, says her Saturday and Sunday classes are usually sold out early in the week.
Without gym access, Jody Baron, an infectious disease doctor at UCSF, has doubled her paddleboard yoga time. Its the only thing you can do in-person as a group right now, she says.
Baron found a listing for paddleboard yoga while searching online for a less involved yoga on the beach. After months of feeling hesitant, she decided to give it a try. Its intimidating, she says. I didnt know anyone who was doing it. But I thought, if I dont do it now, I never will. So I just showed up.
Cathy Stauffer initially felt the same way: Id always been intrigued by paddleboarding, but it seemed out of my reach, she says. She thought she wouldnt be able to stand up on the board, let alone do yoga on the board, but signed up for a class and has been hooked ever since. For me, nothing beats exercising outdoors, she says. Add to that the seals, the sea lions, the feel of the wind, and the unbelievably beautiful views you get of the city from Sausalito. I grew up here but I never really had a connection to the water before.
An OnBoardSUP participant.

A connection to the water isnt immediate almost everybodys afraid theyll fall in at first. People are super wobbly on the board at the beginning, Claxton says, but within about 30 minutes that stops. Its easier to find balance on the board than on a floor, because the board gives you feedback when youre off-center and you naturally correct. Shes even had non-swimmers take her classes.
Most yoga paddleboarders are studio practitioners, but not always, and Claxton does offer beginner classes. Jordan Hymowitz, an investment manager, tried it for the first time to help recover from surgery. Ive been an athlete over the years and I like being outdoors on the water. Its difficult to fall off, unless youre a klutz like me, he jokes. He did fall. But it was no big deal and easy enough to get back on the board. Its relaxing for my back, he says, which is the main reason I do it.
While paddleboard yoga is available at other locations, Claxton says some people drive from the South Bay because its special here. Theres always something happening on the waterfront.
Baron agrees: Its a respite from everything thats going on in the world for a short period of time, she says. Being outside on the water doing yoga poses is an amazing experience. Everything feels so natural.

September 22, 2020
The Summit on the Park Fitness Center, Canton's premier fitness and recreation destination since 1996, is set to reopen on Monday, October 5, 2020, to members only at this time after closing for over six months due to the global pandemic.
Members will once again have access to strength and fitness equipment, the indoor walking track, and indoor fitness classes that will all adhere to the Governor's latest Executive Order. The majority of workout equipment has been spaced accordingly to allow for 10 feet of distancing between stations in both the Fitness Center, as well as the Aerobics Studio. In addition, Selectorized weight equipment will be located at the west end of the Gymnasium. The walking track's middle lane will also be closed to all for socially distanced indoor walking. The Aquatic Center will remain closed for significant capital improvement projects, including replacement of the copper roof and major tile installation. Although a specific reopening date of the Aquatic Center has not been identified at this time, the Summit anticipates that it will be available for use in early 2021.
"Safety is our number one priority and that's why our staff is continually evaluating how best to implement various safety measures in accordance with state and local guidelines as we move forward," said Summit on the Park Supervisor Jason Lombardo. "We know how much our members value exercise for both physical and mental wellbeing, so we are thrilled to be able to open our doors and provide them with a fitness resource."
State of Michigan regulations will allow for the Summit on the Park to reopen with areas limited to 25% of total occupancy. Members will be able to view usage numbers, which will be taken hourly, online at http://www.summitonthepark.org, or via twitter at http://www.twitter.com/summitcanton. Areas that will remain closed until it is deemed safe to reopen, include: Canton Club 55+ Senior Center; Kids' Corner childcare center; sauna and steam room; open gym times; and the racquetball court.
The Summit on the Park will be open with modified business hours Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All Summit on the Park memberships, which have been frozen since the facility's closure due to the global health crisis, will be re-activated and extended accordingly once a member first returns to the Summit. Memberships will remain frozen for those members who do not feel comfortable returning to the facility at this time.
The Summit on the Park, located at 46000 Summit Parkway, remains a popular fitness and recreation destination for residents from Canton and surrounding areas. The Summit currently offers daily, six month and annual memberships. I took a fun trip out to McPherson, Kansas, to the Mt. Hope Sanctuary House to learn about the important impact they have on people's lives and helping them get back on their feet! First, I spoke with Mark Hassman, the owner of Hassman Termite & Pest Control to hear about why they are a huge supporter of the Mt. Hope Sanctuary House. I then had the chance to chat with Julie Holloway, who is the Executive Director of the house, to learn more about the resources they provide for people. Julie explained that they are a transitional home for women and children in the event that they find themselves homeless. They can then apply and come live at the house until they are ready for the next chapter in their life. They have a couple of different programs people can apply for. They have a shorter program called Rise, which stands for renew, inspire, succeed, and engage. That's roughly a 60-day program to help them find a job or build up a bit of savings. There is also a longer-term program that helps them become more self-sufficient and they get a life coach to be more hands on to help them get back on their feet. Lastly, we touched upon their event Taco Tuesday which they have coming up on September 29th in McPherson. This is a really important fundraiser for the house as they had to cancel all of their fundraising events in the spring. If you want to learn more information about Mt. Hope Sanctuary or want to contribute, you can visit their website at: http://mthopesanctuary.org

Every spring and fall, MCMC Outpatient Therapy presents its free Mommy Wellness class series. The classes are designed for moms with babies up to 2 years old.
This sessions classes will be held on the online platform Zoom due to the coronavirus pandemic.
We feel this is an important class offering and could greatly assist new families from feeling socially isolated through the fall, said Laurie VanCott, MSPT, longtime Mommy Wellness facilitator.
While the class is titled Mommy Wellness, its really Mommy and Baby Wellness, she said, as many classes include information on raising healthy children.
Pregnancy and childbirth involve physiological, emotional and social changes, and it is important during this period to implement lifestyle changes to benefit maternal well-being, VanCott said. Structured programs using a multidisciplinary approach can play an important role; such programs are being recommended for pregnant women and their partners.
The goal of the series is to educate and empower pregnant women and new mothers to be well in order to help them raise healthy children, to provide a safe and professional atmosphere for exercise, and to offer a support network for pregnant women and new mothers of any socioeconomic status, she said.
Im very excited that all of our speakers also want to present and be part of the (online) series, she said. Ive read that there is a concern of COVID fatigue and a rise in mental health issues this fall.
VanCott said the Zoom classes will combine the series usually held at Waters Edge in The Dalles and Nichols Landing in Hood River.
Those interested in participating in the class series are asked to preregister at 541-296-7319 or mcmc.net (click Events and scroll to Mommy Wellness).
The free classes run each Tuesday, Sept. 29 through Nov. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. and will be facilitated by VanCott and/or Gina Clark, PT, DPT. Other speakers are Mallory Brandson, Angela Gross, LMT, Sarah Miller CCC-SLP, Lori Elderkin, LPC, CADCI, Michelle Gerbi, DC, Tracy Dugick, MS, RD, Lindsay McHugh, FNP and Corinda Hankins, MD.

Focused on the future: Innovative college programs in N.J. pave way for the real world – Jersey’s Best

New Jersey students browsing a course catalog will find many programs of study thatwerentthere when their parents went to college.
Some programs seem to be exactly appropriate for the time we are in.
Theres cyberpsychology at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), environmental studies at Rutgers, financial technology at Seton Hall and cannabis studies at Stockton University.
As perhaps the largest mass demonstrations in American history have drawn attention to prejudice against minorities, including police brutality and inequity in the impact and treatment of the COVID-19 pandemic, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) offers a minor in social justice.
Its so interesting that it fits the moment, but it is not a new idea for us, said Dr. PiperKendrixWilliams, a professor in the English and African American Studies departments at TCNJ.
The idea for the minor is three or four years old, and we worked on it for about two years, she said.
New Jersey tends to have segregated areas white suburbs and minorities in the cities, she said. Even in college, students experience can be really segregated.
Our students need an education in social justice, she said. Every student in the college needs some understanding of race, gender and inclusion. I can see a lot of students wanting this.
Williams said the program is a natural outgrowth of TCNJs Bonner Scholars program in which participants are required to do 300 hours of community service in the Greater Trenton area.
The minor requires five courses: Introduction to Social Justice, Introduction to Womens and Gender Studies, Introduction to the Sociology of Race and two junior-level electives.
Activism cant come until youre educated, until you know what youre fighting for, Williams said. Higher education has to step up to what is relevant in the world.
Dr. JulieAnciswill be the director of NJITs new program in cyberpsychology, offering a Bachelor of Science degree. It is the first such major in New Jersey and NJITs first foray into the behavioral sciences.
Im very excited about this program because its truly innovative, saidAncis, who has been a professor of psychology and associate vice president of diversity at Georgia Tech.
It is designed for students with an interest in psychology and human behavior, she said, noting that projections call for at least an 11% job growth in the field in the next 10 years.
The program will use existing research and literature to prepare students to solve real-world problems and apply their skills to a variety of domains,Ancissaid.
Potential career fields will include cyber security, games We want games to be a force for good, she said telepsychology, virtual reality, app development, digital health and any positions related to online engagement.
We will be exploring all aspects of technologically interconnected human behavior through the lens of psychology,Ancissaid. We will look at ways to enrich online experiences and decrease anxiety, explore the psychology of cyber threats both for perpetrators and victims factors that influence privacy precautions such as perception of risks, cyberbullying, ethics and many other areas.
The ways in which we learn, socialize and communicate have been transformed, she added. Were in a totally new worldapproximately 60% of the worlds population is using the internet.

I expect this really to grow, she said.
NJIT also is offering a new undergraduate major in forensic science, and certificates in big data, data mining, and cell and gene therapy.
Cannabis has been on college campuses for decades, but with medical marijuana now legal in 33 states and recreational marijuana legal in 11, a new industry has spawned.
The university was interested in having a scientist involved because there might be perceptions that illegal activity was involved, said Dr. EkaterinaSedia, a plant biologist and coordinator of the cannabis studies minor at Stockton University. The program is very much based in science.
OK, we have a new industry, its coming, its here and theyre going to be hiring. We want to get those jobs.
About 50 students are enrolled in the program, which started a year ago.
I anticipated the demand,Sediasaid. I was a little surprised how quickly it became known. We have students from a variety of majors, including business, environment and sustainability, and communications.
The program also looks at hemp and CBD products, and includes such aspects as banking, cybersecurityand regulatory compliance. It studies the non-psychoactive aspects of cannabis, such as use in cosmetics, too.
Its not necessary that youd be growing it yourself, but you may be involved with a business that grows it,Sediasaid. I have a student who says she wants to be the Johnson & Johnson of cannabis.
Elven Riley of Seton Halls Stillman School of Business saidthe financial technology major FinTech for short is aimed at preparing students for jobs where finance and the digital world intersect.
In the finance department we see that banking and brokerages and, to some extent, insurance are reducing their traditional workforces and moving to more technology savvy employees, he said. There are just thousands of jobs out there. New York and London are hotbeds.
The major is designed for business students to become literate in the language of technology.
We think it will put our students at the head of the queue to get those jobs, said Riley, who had a 30-year career in investment banking. Were getting attention from the industry that they want these students.
Seton Hall now has students who pursue dual majors in finance and information technology. Forty to 50 students are expected to switch to the FinTech major.
This is a mash-up of the two concentrations, Riley said. Looking around higher education, thereare not a lot of these designed programs.Theresnot a lot of faculty in higher education that has experience in this space.
Theres big interest, lots of jobs, very exciting, but also very challenging, he said.
The possible careers are in big data, algorithmictradingand edge computing.
Theres no part of the financial industry that doesnt involve technology, Riley said. You need people who are trained and literate inboth of these.
We do think incoming students will seek this out. We think this will attract high-quality students to our program. We would be remiss not to go in this direction.
Rutgers University-New Brunswicks School of Arts and Sciences has launched a new major in environmental studies that brings together 17 science and humanities programs.
This appeals to up-and-coming generations who have grown up with the environment being at the forefront of their world, said Dr. Paul OKeefe, whose specialty is geography.
Different in focus from environmentalscience, the environmental studies major will prepare liberal arts students to be professionals on environmental issues, OKeefe said.
We currently have 26 students enrolled in the environmental studies minor and expect several to transition to the major along with new entrants to the program, he said.
Students in all majors must take Environmental Techniques courses, which give them skills applicable to many workplaces. There also is an optional internship component for students.
Rutgers also offers a minor in agroecology in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences in New Brunswick. It appeals to a small number of students from a wide variety of majors.
I have had landscape architects and nutrition majors who are interested in how we grow food and food systems, said Dr. Mark Robson, Board of Governors Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Plant Biology. I have had kids from the business school who want to know about the costs of growing food. I have had kids in our traditional ag(riculture)and food systems major that used to be ag(riculture) science, and then I have students who are just interested in ecology in general and this caught their eye.
So, given its general nature and the fact that we all eat, it seems to interest a lot of students, he said.
Students have gone on to work for state environmental agencies and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and some have gone into farming as well, Robson said.
Other new programs at Rutgers include majors in cinema studies, Japanese and Korean, and minors in African languages, archaeology, Holocaust studies, and medical ethics and health policy.
Kean University has started a new major in exercise science in its School of Health and Human Performance. It can lead to careers in physical and occupational therapy, chiropractic, cardiac rehabilitation, and sports medicine, and lead to work in the fitness industry.
Some of our students become entrepreneurs and start their own fitness businesses, said Dr. Adam Eckart, program coordinator, who has worked as a full-time trainer and whose bachelors and masters degrees are from Kean.
It can be a feeder for graduate health programs, including medical school, he said.
Eckart said there are 215 exercise science majors, and the program is expected to grow by 40 to 50 students a year.
Health care organizations will be looking in the future to refer patients to exercise professionals, he said. Students need an insight into where the field is headed.
He said most of health care spending results from chronic conditions that can be avoided with intervention through diet and exercise, pointing to the motto of the American College of Sports Medicine: Exercise is medicine.
Seton Hall also has launched a dual major in religion and law, which will allow students to graduate in six years with a bachelors degree in religion and a juris doctor in law.
Were very excited about it, said Dr. Brian Sheppard of Seton Hall Law School in Newark, who said the religion major requires a rigorous study of texts, which overlaps with law school rigor. He said it appeals to students who are interested in working in the nonprofit sector.
We like the idea of building this bridge, Sheppard said. We get some incredible students from Seton Hall undergraduate. This just strengthens that.
It is one ofseveralthree-plus-three programs offered by Seton Hall, leading to both undergraduate and graduate degrees in six years.
You use your first year of studies in law school as your fourth year of college, Sheppard said. It really offers a premium to students who want both degrees. It allows you graduate with less debt. Debt can be a real obstacle to careers in social justice.
And Seton Halls School of Diplomacy and International Relations is offering non-majors a certificate in global affairs.
Acting Dean Courtney Smith said many diplomacy majors minor in languages and other disciplines in Seton Halls other schools.
This is an opportunity for us to offer a reciprocal service, he said, to better serve students already here.
The certificate will require four classes that will give students a better grasp of global affairs, Smith said, since many of the issues facing society in the future require an international approach, including climate change.
He said students can take a broad or narrow approach in choosing their classes. It requires only 12 credits, rather than the 18 required for a minor.
Kean also has started a new dual admission program Pathway to Kean that offers students whodontinitially meet university admissions standards a path toward earning a bachelors degree.
Qualified students are given conditional acceptance to the universityas long asthey complete their associate degree at one of Keans partner county colleges. The university will provide counseling and support services while the students are attending county colleges.
The program begins this fall in partnership with Essex County College, Middlesex County College, the County College of Morris, Ocean County College, Union County College and Warren County Community College. It is expected to include more New Jersey county colleges over the next two years.
Students in the program will have their applications sent to their respective county colleges. Kean will work with each county college admissions office to ease their enrollment into the program.
