Consumer behavior completely changed during the global pandemic
The $4.5 trillion global wellness economy is being transformed before our eyes. Those that invest in the trends that stick and dominate will be significantly healthier, at least financially. There are some clear winners weve seen during the pandemic, but based on market trends and consumer feedback, the landscape continues to shift.
To help shine a light on how wellness consumers, fitness professionals and gym owners see the future of fitness once the dust settles, I met with Jeana Anderson Cohen, the founder and CEO of aSweatLife. Her firm has had a finger on the pulse on the latest fitness trends over the past few years thanks to its annual State of Fitness survey.
Given the enormous disruption of the fitness industry resulting from the pandemic-related lock-downs and social distancing, aSweatLife recently conducted The State of Fitness During the Global Covid-19 Pandemic survey. The results were clear. This pandemic has been a massive moment of behavior change for fitness.
Forced gym closures and social distancing practices greatly impacted the fitness industry as health enthusiasts stopped gym visits and transitioned their fitness routines to digital at-home offerings. In some cases, the shift was counterproductive to the business interests of fitness professionals. Live workout broadcasts via free platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube flooded the social nets and threatened to change the consumer value perception of the fitness industry, which is often priced as a luxury.
This shift is not only driving demand for at-home workouts but is also creating opportunities for startups geared toward a new era of digital fitness. The market is seeing products such as at-home fitness devices and digital apps, as well as fitness experts pivoting their programs to social media and new digital platforms.
People are embracing digital fitness. According to aSweatLifes data, a staggering 86% of their survey respondents are using some form of digital fitness, compared to data in January when nearly 50% of respondents didnt use ANY form of digital fitness. Companies like Peloton, Hydrow, Mirror and Tonal that sell digital at-home workout devices are set to be the biggest winners. Their products can be connected to social workout platforms and incorporate modern data-tracking capabilities into physical workouts. However, the question emerges: will the average Jane or Joe be able, or be willing, to pay for the expensive equipment and the ongoing monthly subscription of these products?
As price-conscious consumers seek at-home fitness solutions, fitness apps and fitness experts offering digital alternatives will benefit from a plethora of new users. ASweatLife data shows that 45.5% of their respondents are sweating with a digital fitness app, 36.7% are working out via Facebook or Instagram Live and 30% are using fitness content on YouTube. While this market is ultra-competitive with many free online alternatives, high-quality fitness solutions will have the opportunity to generate sustainable subscription revenue. Along those lines, Jeana predicts three types of consumer behavior will emerge:
Consumer behavior completely adapted during the global pandemic. For many, this has been an introduction to the fact that working out at home may be as effective and provides them access to online gyms and fitness programs geographically far away from them. Jeana expects some claw-back as studios and gyms reopen, but never a full return to the numbers from before. This is especially evident in consumer spending. In early 2020, aSweatLife found that the average monthly consumer fitness spend was $100.34, but amidst the pandemic, 39% of respondents were doing all of their fitness for free, and another 20% were spending $0-25 monthly.
These spending changes will clearly have an impact on firms like ClassPass, which depends on an active network of gym-goers to generate revenue. ASwealife data shows most members have frozen or canceled their ClassPass memberships and plan to support small businesses if they go back.
Consumers aren't always the best predictors of their own future behavior - but if they do what they think they're going to do, the fitness industry will have new leaders.

Retired Wall Street Exec Discovers Benefits of Fitness at 70 – Next Avenue
Forget second acts. Jim Owen, who turns 80 on Oct. 20, is capitalizing on his third. His new documentary film, The Art of Aging Well,is the culmination of what he describes as his purpose and his legacy: Inspiring older adults to become healthier and more active.
Were experiencing a health care crisis that no one talks about, and its not the second wave of the pandemic: We are a nation of couch potatoes, and its literally killing us, says Owen, who lives in San Diego.
The film ran on Wyoming PBS,airs on Rocky Mountain PBS on Sept. 24 and will be available to PBS member stations through the National Educational Telecommunications Association starting Oct. 31.
He had read that if you live to age 70, youd likely live another 15 years. With no desire to spend those years in pain with no energy, he vowed to get in shape.
In a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers predicted that nearly half of Americans will be obese by 2030. Owen adds that health experts have long known that being physically fit substantially reduces the risk of serious chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer, and most of us have much more control over the aging process than we think.
Owen firmly believes that how we age is largely up to us: While we cant help getting older, we dont have to get old.
Growing up in Lexington, Ky., Owen played recreational football, basketball and baseball, and lifted weights, too, all in the shadow of his older brother, a star athlete. But after graduating from college, he spent the next 30-plus years doing no exercise at all as he built a successful investment career on Wall Street, including publishing the bestselling book, The Prudent Investors Guide to Hedge Funds.
I got lucky; I was blessed and had a very rewarding career. But anyone can make money; its much harder to make a difference, says Owen, who reinvented himself in 2003 as a motivational speaker and author of Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street Can Learn From the Code of the West.
I dont wear a cowboy hat and Im kind of afraid of horses, he admits. But to me, the mythical cowboy was a construct: Every culture needs heroes, and when I grew up, cowboys like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry were mine.
Owens advice about business and life sparked a movement, leading to two subsequent Cowboy Ethics business books, the launch of the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership nonprofit and hundreds of speaking engagements per year. It was while he crisscrossed the country on a whirlwind speaking tour in 2006 that Owen realized how weak, stiff, achy and tired he felt all the time.
The tipping point came when Owen watched a video of himself on his 70th birthday, looking haggard and pale. He had read that if you live to age 70, youd likely live another 15 years. With no desire to spend those years in pain with no energy, he vowed to get in shape.
Applying the same determination that worked during his Wall Street days, Owen slowly took control of his health, beginning with daily 10-minute walks. Working with a professional trainer, he added on strength-building exercises and began eating healthier.
Many older adults worry theyll get hurt by starting an exercise plan, and Owen discovered there are no shortcuts. He had briefly taken up running at 50 and injured both knees. After switching to weightlifting, he bench-pressed too much weight and was left with searing lower back pain that kept him up at night.
The older you are, the more safety has to be the number one priority, and that means listening to your body, says Owen, noting theres a fine line between getting out of your comfort zone, progressing and going overboard.
Dont get overly ambitious, particularly if youre older. Just chip away at it, and all the sudden youll look back and say, I cant believe how far Ive come, he says
Owens persistence was validated when, at 75, his primary care physician pronounced him in excellent shape for a 65-year-old. His body was now a decade younger than his actual age.
Exercise has enlarged my view of the world. Getting fit is incredibly empowering: If someone says, Youll never do this, I say, Watch me. Im not that coordinated, so if I can do it, anybody can do it, Owen says.
Most people think that the hard work and subsequent payoff from regular exercise is physical. But for Owen, the mental aspect has been the most daunting and the most rewarding.
Id guess that eighty percent of people who go to the gym are going because somebody their doctor or their spouse told them to. Thats not motivational, so you do it in a half-hearted way, he explains. My motivation was getting rid of aches and pains, but the life-transforming thing came after five years, when I changed my mindset from working out to training. Thats really when you make big strides. Exercise has really boosted my confidence.
I want to be lean, and its not vanity. If I do get hit with COVID-19, a stroke or a heart attack, I believe Ive done everything I can do to weather it.
In addition to three strength workouts a week, Owen walks, stretchesand does yoga, Pilates and movement classes, often alongside his wife Stanya. He is pain-free, and weighs less than he did in high school.
I work on my weaknesses, not my strengths. Most people only work on their strengths; you see guys doing bicep curls or tricep extensions. You dont need to do that stuff. Try doing push-ups. I hate push-ups, but thats why you should do them. When I started, it took almost a week before I could do one. Today, I can do fifty; Im in the best shape of my life.
Breaking a sweat inspired Owen to raise awareness about the power of being physically active.
His 2017 book Just Move! A New Approach to Fitness After 50 named one of the years best books on healthy aging by The Wall Street Journal chronicled his new-found passion for healthy living and provided a step-by-step program that could be adapted to any level of ability.
I know it sounds corny, but I strive to become a role model, Owen says. Not a week goes by where I dont get emails or phone calls from people who say, Mr. Owen, youve changed my life, or You changed my father or mothers life. Its fascinating to me, because theres no lack of information out there, but thats not the answer. Both my book and the documentary are a call to action.
Produced by Owen and directed by Jim Havey, The Art of Aging Wells overall message emphasizes that its never too late or too difficult to become healthier. Over the past two years, Owens team gathered powerful success stories of individuals who overcame obstacles to find health through exercise later in life.
The 30-minute film also features practical tips and perspectives from leading wellness experts across the country who believe prevention should be our primary health care strategy.
Everybody we talked to wanted to be part of this to share their experience, and I want these stories to change the world, says Owen, who plans to produce more films about healthy aging. This is not a business for me; I wouldnt work this hard for money. Its just really fun.
The pandemic has brought a sense of urgency to Owens work, and he hopes that living in the COVID-19-era has been a wake-up call to many older adults as they realize they can reduce the risks to their health.
Hes convinced that staying active and having a positive, youthful attitude builds up resilience to face any health crisis, should it present itself.
I want to be lean, and its not vanity, Owen says. If I do get hit with COVID-19, a stroke or a heart attack, I believe Ive done everything I can do to weather it.
Owen continues to take on big challenges, and says healthy living has given him a sense of purpose that motivates him every day.
Many people my age sort of give up on life; I dont, he says. I used to think that life inevitably goes downhill once you hit seventy or seventy-five. Now, I feel my best days may still lie ahead.

This is the Air Force Marathon so we wanted to still find a way to show our appreciation to our young junior Airmen and the sacrifices that they have made to serve our country, said Hough. In a show of support, some of our senior leadership have also decided to run alongside the Airmen.
The Air Force Marathons Health and Fitness Expo is also ongoing virtually and during the streaming some vendors may be conducting live streams demonstrating their products and interacting with viewers.
The virtual expo has many of the vendors who would have been physically at the expo, said Jasmine Redman, Air Force Marathon special events coordinator. At the expo participants can still learn about the new products in health, fitness and nutrition and vendors will be offering items on sale and special discount codes for their products and services so be sure to check out each vendor booth.
The Health and Fitness Expo is free and open the public and will be available until Sept. 30. Viewers can search for specific companies or browse the virtual booths to see what each vendor has to offer.

Garmin vs Fitbit: how to pick the right fitness tracker for you – TechRadar
Fitbit and Garmin are two of the biggest names in the fitness tracker and smartwatch business. Especially if you care about keeping a closer eye on your health and fitness.
Garmin has been around longer, making sports watches that over time have evolved to behave more like smartwatches in recent years. So you can start paying your way or listening to music without having your phone nearby.
Fitbit arrived on the scene after Garmin and started with fitness trackers before adding smartwatches to its collection of wearables. Fitness tracking remains at the core of what it does, but its now exploring how it can better monitor your health and activities like running and swimming.
Both offer a variety of different models and options, making it hard to work out which one is actually the best fit for you. Thats why weve pulled together this guide to help make that decision an easier one, picking out the biggest differences in the hardware, software and features that these two wearable heavyweights have to offer.
Garmin launched its first Forerunner watch back in the early 2000s and since then its added a range of lines including its Vivoactive and Fenix watches. All have sports tracking at the core, offering a range of different designs and mix of features.

Battery life
One of the staples of Garmins fitness trackers and watches is the promise to deliver big battery life. Whether you go for something cheap like the Vivofit fitness tracker or something high end like the Forerunner 945, Garmin will generally offer close to a week of battery life and in many instances longer.
It also takes into great consideration that using features like GPS or heart rate monitoring while tracking an activity can greatly reduce battery. So watches like its outdoor-centric Fenix series include an UltraTrac battery mode to give you more tracking time while reducing the rate it records data like GPS. Youll also find new power saving and battery modes that switch off power hungry features you dont regularly use to retain battery for the features you do use.
On the Venu, Garmins most smartwatch-like device, its the only device in its collection that features a colour AMOLED display that can be used in an always-on mode. It still manages multiple days of battery life, despite using a more power-hungry display technology than the transflective display technology Garmin uses on the majority of its other watches.
Fitness features
We think its fair to say that when it comes to what Garmins watches and fitness trackers can actually monitor, there is a lot. Those feature sets vary across devices and ranges, but many of the core features run across the ranges to offer a more consistent and familiar experience.
So from Vivosmart to Fenix, youre going to get 24/7 activity tracking, continuous heart rate monitoring and sleep monitoring. Youll also get some of Garmins more motivational fitness tracking features like Move IQ and adaptive step counts that are designed to keep you moving during the day in subtle but very meaningful ways. You can also find features like stress monitoring, guided breathing exercises, womens health tracking and Garmins Body Battery monitor. This looks at metrics like sleep and heart rate to determine the energy levels you have for the day.
When it comes to sports tracking, this is really where Garmins devices excel. It covers core sports like running, cycling and swimming (pool and open water), offering a host of rich metrics you can delve into during or after activities.
When youre willing to spend more on watches like the Fenix or Forerunner 945, youll also start to see sports profiles for more outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, climbing or even paddleboarding. These more niche pursuits still offer a rich set of activity-specific metrics. Youll also find features like mapping and navigation to make them more useful when youre out exploring.

Smartwatch features
While Garmins watches and trackers are predominantly designed for sport and fitness, they do now behave better as smartwatches.
Most if not all work with both Android devices and iPhones, and will offer core features like being able to view notifications, check the time and weather and sync data to Garmins Connect app.
When you decide to pay more for something like the Forerunner 245 or Fenix, youll get more in the way of smartwatch features. That includes payments, and a built-in music player. The latter lets you pile on your own music or playlists from the likes of Spotify and Deezer. That includes storing them offline so you dont need to be connected to your phone to listen to them.
If you care about apps, most of Garmins watches with the right amount of storage also have access to the Connect IQ store. This is where you can find apps, watch faces, data fields and widgets. That Connect IQ support can vary. So the Forerunner 45 is compatible, but will only let you download watch faces. Pricier Forerunners though will give you full access.

Fitbits first wearable was a pedometer-style device that centred on counting steps and tracking your sleep.
Since then, its added new sensors, designs and moved into the smartwatch space to rival Apple, Samsung and Googles legion of Wear OS watches.
It still cares about tracking your fitness, but it can now do a better impression as a watch and offers a rich array of connected features that make it worthy of a place on your wrist.

Battery life
Even from its early tracker days, Fitbit has sought to promise close to a weeks worth of battery life. Years later, that hasnt changed and it has even made good progress dealing with the fact that full fat smartwatches still have a battery problem.
Its latest Versa 3 and Sense watches promise up to 6+ days, which is impressive when you consider the kind of display and features the watches have to power. Its Inspire 2 and Charge 4 fitness trackers also promise to comfortably last a week between charges. The Inspire 2 actually promises to go for 10 days, which is the longest battery life a Fitbit wearable has been capable of.
Adding always-on display modes to its latest smartwatches will impact on battery life just like it does on Apple and Samsungs watches. It might be a big reason why Fitbit is introducing a new fast charging feature that gives you a day battery from a 12-minute charge.
Fitness features
Fitness tracking is really how Fitbit made its name and it underpins every device its launched or is in the process of launching.
Every Fitbit will track your steps, monitor your heart rate 24/7, monitor sleep and buzz you with inactivity alerts during the day. Those sleep features are some of the richest available on a wearable platform digging deep into insights and offering additional metrics fuelled by monitoring heart rate during the night.
More recently, its added menstrual health tracking with some data viewable on its smartwatches. Youll get guided breathing exercises and its new Sense watch can even indicate your bodys response to stress.

The Charge 4, Versa and Sense now offer built-in GPS to make mapping outdoor activities easier to do and you have Fitbits PurePulse heart rate sensor to unlock training in heart rate zones and features like Active Zone Minutes and Intensity Maps. Fitbits watches and Charge 4 flagship tracker also track your swimming, though currently only works for pool swimming only.
Fitbit users also have access to its Premium platform, where you can find programs and workouts you can follow and gain deeper data insights from the sensors on board their watch and tracker.
Smartwatch features
On Fitbits fitness trackers, it did its best to offer smartwatch-style features. Given the screen and design limitations, it was always going to be difficult to go beyond things like basic notification support.
That has changed significantly since it entered the smartwatch space and the likes of the Versa and Sense can do more when youre not sweating it out in the gym.
Fitbits wearables work with Android and iPhones giving you features like notifications, payments, apps, watch faces and built-in music players. Its latest smartwatches also add smart assistant support for Amazons Alexa with Google Assistant support to follow.
The experience using a Fitbit with an Android phone or iPhone is largely consistent, though features like responding to notifications for example is an Android-only feature.
Like Garmin, you have access to an app store here too. Fitbits App Gallery is still growing as a platform, but does include some high profile names like MySwimPro and Spotify. The latter though will only let you control the streaming service, not pile on offline playlists like you can on the Garmin. If you like watch faces, Fitbit offers plenty of variety here too and you can keep up to 5 faces on its smartwatches at one time.

So, do you go with Fitbit or Garmin? As weve said, there are a lot of different devices to choose from on both sides and all offer varying features and looks.
The decision between the two platforms we think comes down to a few areas that might sway you one way over the other.
If you care largely about fitness tracking as opposed to recording runs or hikes, Fitbit still feels like it offers a better experience here. Its devices and companion app are easy to use and it still offers the richest most useful sleep tracking you can find on a wearable. For beginners, its a much better fit. Fitbit also offers more cutting-edge sensors geared towards serious health monitoring with its ECG and skin temperature sensor that now appears on its new Sense watch.
If you spend more time tracking sport and yearn for masses of data and battery life when youre on the move, Garmins watches and trackers in general will serve you better. They offer reliable tracking and the ability to add external sensors means you can improve accuracy and the amount of metrics you can record.
Outside of tracking, both offer plenty. Garmin has some desirable features that you wont find on a Fitbit. Like proper Spotify support and useful safety and assistance features. Fitbit though has that smart assistant support if thats something you value having on a watch.
The decision between these two big names in the wearable world really comes down to what you value most. They both now offer very accomplished devices that impress on both hardware and software fronts. BREC enters Phase 3 of reopening plans, its fitness centers will reopen Tuesday – WBRZ
BATON ROUGE - As Louisiana continues to move through Phase 3 of its reopening process, the office of Parks and Recreation in East Baton Rouge Parish (BREC) initiated the start of its Phase 3 reopening plan on Monday, September 21.
According to BREC's website, the organization is reopening certain locations in harmony with CDC, state, and local guidelines to ensure the safety of all guests and staff members.
While some BREC facilities, such as Liberty Lagoon and all indoor playgrounds and interactive rooms, will remain closed until further notice, BREC fitness centers are scheduled to reopen Tuesday, September 22.
BREC's website notes that in addition to setting up signs encouraging cleanliness and COVID-related safety precautions, officials will require that anyone entering a BREC building wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth.
Additional guidelines and new procedures to ward off the spread of novel coronavirus are detailed below.
-Only facilities able to comply with CDC, state, and local guidelines will be opened to the public with modified operations in accordance with those guidelines.
-Signs promoting physical distancing and hygiene placed throughout the park system to remind and encourage the public.
-Cash transactions are discouraged.
-Employees are required to practice good hygiene (washing hands regularly, wearing PPE, etc.); maintain physical distance from others; and selfquarantine if showing symptoms.
-Where possible and feasible, teleworking is encouraged.
-Where applicable and possible, employees will return to work in phases.
-Managers are strongly encouraged to consider special accommodations for personnel who are members of vulnerable populations.
-Meetings with the public should be held remotely using technology.
-All employees are encouraged to have work-related discussions via remote mediums where possible.
-Employees are required to wear masks or cloth face coverings when being near or interacting with others.
-Anyone entering a building will be required to wear a cloth face covering, especially when interacting with others (exceptions permitted for employees behind transparent barriers).
-Everyone entering an indoor facility must have their temperature taken. Anyone with a fever, as defined by the CDC, will not be permitted into a building.
-Prior to entrance indoors, all employees must complete and comply with a COVID-19 questionnaire.
-Sanitation protocols have been developed in accordance with the CDCs Reopening Guidance for Cleaning and Disinfecting Public Spaces, Workplaces, Businesses, Schools, and Homes published April 28, 2020, and departments will comply with protocols specific to their areas. Janitorial services and cleaning of frequently touched surfaces will be increased.
-Hand sanitizer has been and will continue to be placed throughout the park system and facilities for public use

Boutique Fitness Studios Put the Pressure on NYC to Reopen – Cheddar
Boutique gyms and group fitness facilities partnered up to pressure Mayor Bill de Blasio to permit the restart of group fitness in New York City.
"Fitness classes are usually 10 people per class and are built for social distancing, as each member has their own equipment during the workout," the complaint reads. "If tanning salons, tattoo parlors, gyms, schools, indoor gymnastics, casinos, mass transit, piercing stations and spas are allowed to open, fit, yoga, pilates, barre and other fitness boutique studios should also be allowed to open."
Amanda Freeman, CEO and founder of SLT short for Strengthen Lengthen Tone which is part of the Boutique Fitness Alliance, said it was a "punch in the gut" when she found out group fitness classes couldn't resume in New York City.
"It's a bit of what I like to say 'a head-scratcher' of why gyms can open and boutique fitness can't. It's very frustrating," Freeman said. "We can be controlled, safe, and very careful, even more so than a gym."
"That is one thing that we've learned coming out of this; that we need to always stay united and we need representation," Freeman said. "It's very nice to see that we are talking and saying, 'What's good for you is good for me,' rather than fighting over a specific client."
Separate from the lawsuit, Boutique Fitness Alliances has also argued that the city's differing policies for gyms and group fitness classes are sexist. According to data from the International Health Racquet & Sportsclub Association, multipurpose gym facilities tend to attract more men, whereas boutique fitness studios are the reverse. Women make up roughly 78 percent of members at boutique fitness studios. Plus, fitness studios are more likely to be owned and staffed by women, according to the IHRSA.
"The decisions being made by men are unintentionally harming the women," Freeman said.
Her own company, SLT, has studios in six states on the East Coast. All 26 of them closed down in mid-March. Only the New York City studios remain completely closed.
In the open studios, like in Southampton on Long Island, SLT has taken pains to ensure staff and client safety. To prepare for reopening, staff installed vinyl dividers between the Megaformer machines they use, removed machines to ensure adequate social distancing, removed or altered high touch surfaces like cubbies and benches, installed compliant air filtration systems, and enforce mask-wearing during the workouts much to the chagrin of students.
"I kept adjusting it and trying to fix it. The mask was the worst part," said Victoria Winner, an SLT veteran at the Southampton location who has taken more than 300 classes.
Although SLT devotees seem eager to return to the reopened studios, and Freeman said students have been receptive to new, online class offerings, she said the ongoing closures have taken a huge toll on her business.
"The pandemic has been brutal for my business," she said. "Our New York City studios do make up 80 percent of our revenue, so having those closed for six months has been devastating."
