A campaign backed by a coalition of former competitors, sports scientists and doctors has called on World Athletics to reverse its decision to ban Caster Semenya and other female athletes with naturally high levels of testosterone from competing in certain events unless they take medication.
The #LetHerRun movement, conceived by the Africa agency, is aimed at pressuring the sport's worldwide governing body to change its rules regarding athletes with differences in sexual development (DSD).
Double Olympic 800 metres champion Semenya lost her appeal against the World Athletics ruling at the Swiss Supreme Court earlier this month.
The regulations force DSD athletes to take drugs to reduce their naturally-occurring testosterone if competing in women's events ranging from 400 metres to a mile.
DSD athletes with naturally high levels of testosterone need to medically limit that level to less than 5 nmol/L, double the normal female range of below 2 nmol/L.
The #LetHerRun movement, focused on Semenya and other athletes including Burundi's Francine Niyonsaba and Margaret Wambui of Kenya, "is aimed at pressuring the World Athletics in the face of the unequal treatment, calling for a counter-decision on the banning of athletes".
"Casters case deserves our attention because it affects the destiny of dozens of other athletes who will have their careers ended prematurely simply because they were born out of the standards imposed by technocrats from a regulatory agency," said Brazil's Jackie Silva, who won the inaugural Olympic beach volleyball gold medal with partner Sandra Pires at Atlanta 1996.

Semenya, the 800m champion at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, had previously appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the policy, but was unsuccessful.
The Swiss court ruling dealt a further blow to the 29-year-old, who will be unable to defend her Olympic crown at the postponed Tokyo 2020 unless she takes medication, as things stand.
World Athletics, known as the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) when the controversial rules were introduced, insists that the regulations are in place to protect women's sport.
The South African Government has also offered its support to Semyena, with Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa vowing to "fight this injustice" of the current rules.

A single gene which encodesthe enzyme aromatase, is crucial for the regulation of male sexual desire according to research from Northwestern University, Illinois.
Aromatase, which is encoded by the Cyp19a1 gene, is involved in the conversion of testosterone to oestrogen, driving male sexual activity. Testosterone is the primary sex hormone in males, and oestrogen is one of two primary sex hormones in females. These findings, published in the journal Endocrinology, could lead to further research surrounding sex addiction and dysfunction.
'This is the first key finding to explain how testosterone stimulates sexual desire' said Professor Serdar Bulun, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology and senior author of the study. 'We demonstrated conclusively that the conversion of testosterone to oestrogen in the brain is critical to maintain full sexual activity or desire in males.'
The researchers knocked out the Cyp19a1 gene from the brains of male mice, which is a genetic technique in which a gene is made inactive. This leads to approximately a 50 percent decrease in sexual activity, in terms of both number of sexual encounters and total time spent engaged.
Whilst sexual behaviour in knockout mice was partially restored by testosterone, it was only fully replenished after administering testosterone with estradiol, a form of oestrogen. This implies that, for testosterone-driven sexual activity, aromatase is a requirement.
'[Without aromatase] male mice partially lost interest in sex' said Dr Hong Zhao, research associate professor of obstetrics and gynaecology who was also involved in the study. 'Aromatase is the key enzyme for oestrogen production. Oestrogen has functions in males and females. Testosterone has to be converted to oestrogen to drive sexual desire in males.'
Aromatase deficiency, which is extremely rare, leads to chronically high testosterone levels in men and a loss of libido, and has been treated using oestrogen therapy. However, until now, it was not known how aromatase fuelled the male sex drive.
The authors suggest that these findings could have significant human implications for men who display low sexual desire, known as male hypoactive sexual desire disorder, as well as those experiencing compulsive sexual desire and sex addiction.
Next steps will include developing specific treatments to alter aromatase activity, as well as trials to ensure that the effects observed in mice can be translated into humans.

In an attempt to understand their actions, I have come up with possible motives.
Since a high percentage of people dying from the COVID-19 virus are over 80, and especially those in nursing homes, could it be their intent is to help balance the national budget by killing off these people who are drawing so many Social Security and Medicare dollars? Since President Trump has suggested canceling the tax that supports Social Security and Medicare, they could be helping him out by killing off a number of these freeloaders. Never mind that they paid into these funds all their working lives.
A disproportionate number of these deaths are in the Latino, Native American and Black communities. It is likely that these deaths are due to economic conditions since these groups have a disproportionate number of poorly paying jobs, and it takes money to quarantine for a long period of time. Could it be their motive is to thin out these communities due to prejudice?
Since these anarchists fall into the tough guy category, they may want to thin out those of us who do not appreciate their attitudes by amplifying the spread of this terrible disease. Since they are so tough, they think they will simply shrug off the disease. In reality, they might not be so tough after all.
This brings me to the question: Do I really think they are planning far enough in advance to actually be conducting their assaults on the Legislature for any of these conspiracy reasons? I certainly do not. What I do think is they are a bunch of stupid people who want to do anything they want, and if any of these scenarios play out it will be due to plain old stupidity. Stupidity brought on by testosterone diseases.
These conspiracy postulates, while crazy, are no worst than those put out by QAnon. I cannot imagine that anyone actually believes the QAnon conspiracy theories, but obviously some are actually stupid enough to embrace them.
So, if people on the right are going to put out stupid conspiracy theories, people on the left need to put out some of their own. Can anyone reading this come up with some good ones?

Ayesha Curry is giving fans a glimpse at her daily diet.
The 31-year-old actor and cookbook author, who is married to NBA star Stephen Curry, recently revealed that she lost 35 pounds, and now she's breaking down the healthy foods that help her stay in shape.
In a new video for Harper's Bazaar, Curry opens up about her approach to nutrition and reveals that working out has become more important to her over time.
"Fitness wasn't really a part of my lifestyle and I'd say the past year and a half post having all of my kids, it's really become a staple for me and it helps me have mental clarity," she said. "I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. I feel happier when I work out. So I do try to work out at least five days a week."
Curious what Curry eats on an average day? Here's her typical daily diet:
Curry's day begins with a fresh cup of coffee, and she prepares the caffeinated drink a few different ways depending on whether or not she's been fasting.
"If I'm intermittent fasting, I'll do it with a little bit of coconut oil, grass-fed butter and some MCT oil, which is for your brain fuel and so that you can function," she explained.
On days where she's not fasting, the 31-year-old prefers to pour a touch of Coffee-mate's French vanilla creamer into a super strong brew.
The mother of three usually only eats breakfast on the weekends and has a tried-and-true meal she loves to prepare.
"I love a good smoked salmon scramble. It's something that I put in my first cookbook 'The Seasoned Life' and I still eat it to this day," she said, adding that she slow cooks the scrambled eggs and adds in a bit of dill, salt and pepper before tossing the smoked salmon in at the very end.

To stay hydrated throughout the day, Curry loves to sip on hot water. "I'm not a huge fan of ice water. I don't know why," she said.
Like many busy moms, Curry often finds it hard to sneak in the time to eat a midday meal. When she does have a few moments to eat lunch, the author typically likes to work out first and opts for a salad (arugula or spinach) with a seared protein on the side like shrimp, salmon or tuna.
"I love a good poppyseed dressing on my salad, a little bit of red onions in there, dash of salt and pepper, alongside some sort of chocolate protein shake," she said.
The TV personality doesn't snack all that much, but when she does get the munchies she usually opts for banana chips, cucumbers or carrot sticks.
"My family is probably laughing watching this right now because I go through banana chips like crazy," she said.
Dinnertime in the Curry household takes place around 7 p.m., right before the kids go to bed, and that's the meal the 31-year-old puts the most effort into.
"That's where my focus is when it comes to preparing a meal for my family. It's not breakfast, it's not lunch, it's definitely dinner because that's the time I know we're going to get to sit around the table together," she said.
The cookbook author's latest book, "The Full Plate," focuses on quick dinner recipes like 20-minute, sheet-pan dinners, pasta dishes and simple steak dinners. And Curry says she's always looking for "fast, simple and easy" meal options.
"(The cookbook) is really a very good reflection of how my life is right now," she said.
Whenever she can, Curry likes to honor her Jamaican roots in her cooking and she especially enjoys whipping up one traditional dish.
"My absolute favorite meal to cook is oxtail rice and peas and fried plantain," she said. "Again, I'm Jamaican, that is my heritage, that is the food that I grew up with. It just brings me so much comfort and joy when I make it."
While she's been trying to eat healthy whenever she can, Curry admits that she's only human and likes to indulge every now and then. For instance, ketchup chips and donuts are two of her guilty pleasures, and she also digs mezcal margaritas with maple syrup and cocktails like whiskey sours.
