Scientists discover gene, area in male brain that controls carnal desire – Study Finds

New research could lead to breakthroughs in treating men who suffer from low or overactive sex drive.

CHICAGO A new discovery is opening the door to treating sexual dysfunction in men. Doctors from Northwestern Universitys School of Medicine say a specific gene in the brain regulates sexual desire, making it possible for scientists to increase or decrease these impulses.

Researchers say the key is a gene calledaromatase. In a certain area of the brain, this gene converts testosterone to estrogen and helps the male sex drive. Until now, scientists werent sure how big of a role aromatase played in this process.

This is the first key finding to explain how testosterone stimulates sexual desire, senior author Dr. Serdar Bulun says in a media release. For the first time, we demonstrated conclusively that the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in the brain is critical to maintain full sexual activity or desire in males. Aromatase drives that.

The study examines how mice react when scientists artificially block the function of aromatase. The results show male mice see a 50-percent decrease in sexual activity, even though their testosterone levels are higher than normal mice. While some may associate estrogen with females, study authors explain it plays a vital role in the male body too.

Male mice partially lost interest in sex, says Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicines Dr. Hong Zhao. Aromatase is the key enzyme for estrogen production. Estrogen has functions in males and females. Testosterone has to be converted to estrogen to drive sexual desire in males.

Normally, male lab mice will follow female mice around and try to mate when placed in the same cage. The new study finds male behavior is noticeably different when inhibiting this gene.

If you knock out the aromatase gene in the brain, their sexual activity is significantly reduced. There is less frequency of mating. The male mice are not that interested, Bulun says.

The Northwestern team says a low sex drive, known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder, is a common problem among men using certain antidepressants known as SSRIs. Bulun believes boosting aromatase can restore the testosterone-estrogen conversion.

For men experiencing compulsive sexual desire on the other hand, dampening this gene just like the mice may be the answer. The study cautions however, existing drugs which inhibit aromatase can cause osteoporosis, a condition causing the bones to become brittle and weak. Using this new research, Bulun says specific drugs which only target the brain area where aromatase works can avoid these side-effects.

The study appears in the journal Endocrinology.

Why Sex Drive May Change By Season & The Time Of Year It Often Peaks – mindbodygreen.com

Summer is thought of as a pretty "hot" season with people feeling friskier than other times of the year. It's possible the increase in vitamin D in the summertime, spending more time in social settings, and showing more skin throughout the summer months together might create more sexual interest.

But when we look at hormone patterns, fall may actually be the season when sexual desire gets a boost.

Humans, like most mammals, experience a sort of "biological rhythm" when it comes to fertility and other bodily processes. Our hormones fluctuate with these rhythms, including hormones like testosterone, which play a big role in sex drive, among other things.

In one study on testosterone in men and women, researchers found both experienced a drop in testosterone in the summer, with a spike in fall. A second study on men only also found a prominent seasonal peak in testosterone levels in October and November. Additional research suggests it's not uncommon for men, in particular, to experience a drop in testosterone in the colder months of winter, as well.

Taking these studies together, it's possible that fall may be a particularly potent time of year when it comes to sex drive. Another study found men actually find women's bodies more attractive during the colder months because they're less likely to see women's bodies exposed around that season, in comparison to the summertime.

Of course, if you or a partner suffer(s) from season affective disorder (SAD), the fall and winter months may not bring much sexual desire along with them. Depression is known to lower one's sex drive, with a decreased libido in colder months being a possible indication of SAD.

The Outdoor Journal by Kyle Carroll – Braymer Bee

Last week we looked at the framework for the season. There wasn't space in the column to talk about what to expect when the season opens. September deer activity is a lot different than November deer activity. If you have trail cameras out or if you have been scouting, you probably have seen bachelor groups of bucks co-existing together. That will change pretty quickly as we progress into the fall. This is caused by rising testosterone levels in bucks as day length and the amount of sunlight diminish. Bucks will tolerate each other for a couple more weeks, but as their testosterone levels rise, their necks begin to swell and they begin to push and shove each other, eventually turning to all out fighting, establishing dominance for the coming rut.

The ritual is ancient; as old as the coming of fall itself and the hunter's urge to head to the woods. If you have noticed a group of bucks on camera or during your scouting, you should hunt that area right away because they are likely to disappear soon. At least some of them will. Bucks spread out and some will not be seen where they have spent the summer with the group of other bucks.

Food sources change. Acorns begin to drop. Crops are harvested. Beans that were a favorite all summer are now dropping leaves.

Grant Woods notes on his Deer and Deer Hunting program, that it's a hard to hunt bedding areas in the mornings this time of year as well. Deer feed in the evening and head back to their bedding areas before daylight. It's hard to get close to those areas early in the morning in the early season. Grant suggests hunting bottlenecks in the evenings between bedding areas and food sources.

There is a lot going on in the woods this time of year. It's time to start tuning in to the rhythms of seasons.

Simone Biles Stands in Solidarity With Olympic Runner Semenya Caster After Controversial Ruling: This Is Wron – The Root

Photo: Craig Barritt/PHILL MAGAKOE (Getty Images)

Real recognizes real, and greatness knows who it holds company with. Its no surprise, then, that champion gymnast Simone Biles was among those offering full-throated support to South African track star Caster Semenya, who lost an appeal last week to be able to compete as she was born.

A Swiss high court ruled last Tuesday that Semenya could not compete in any races between 400 meters and a mile unless she underwent medical interventions to lower her testosterone levels. Semenyas body naturally produces more testosterone than what has been considered typical for women.

With the ruling, Semenya is unable to compete in her signature event, the 800 meters, in which she has won Olympic gold twice.

This is wrong on so many levels once again men having control over womens bodies, Biles wrote in a tweet last Thursday. Im tired.

G/O Media may get a commission

The courts decision, which upholds a 2019 ruling made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), was roundly criticized, including by The Root, for leaning into a long history of scrutinizing and policing the bodies of Black female athletes.

Its a practice that Biles is unfortunately familiar with. She has written about being fat-shamed as a young gymnast. A Vogue profile of the gymnastwidely acknowledged to be the greatest of all timenotes that Biles first international win was overshadowed by a racist allegation by an Italian gymnast, who told reporters that Biles race was an advantage.

Next time we should paint our skin Black, so we could win, too, Carlotta Ferlito told reporters.

As Biles told a fan at an event earlier this year, the scrutiny didnt stop there.

They focused on my hair. They focused on how big my legs were. But God made me this way, and I feel like if I didnt have these legs or these calves, I wouldnt be able to tumble as high as I can and have all of these moves named after me, Biles said, according to Vogue.

Its no wonder, then, that 23-year-old world champion would feel compassion for Semenya, who has been fighting back for years against allegations that she should not run in womens events because her testosterone levels give her an unfair advantage.

As writer Claire Rudy Foster noted in a recent Allure article, Semenyas white counterparts didnt start questioning Semenyas gender until she started winning the 800-meter race in international competitions. After her win at the 2009 World Championships, Mariya Savinova, a Russian who also ran in the race, speculated to Russian journalists that Semenya would fail a sex determination test.

Just look at her, Savinova told reporters at the time (as Foster reports, Savinova was caught doping eight years later).

For her part, Semenya has remained defiant in the aftermath of the ruling.

I am very disappointed by this ruling, but refuse to let World Athletics drug me or stop me from being who I am, Semenya said in a statement released through her lawyers last week. For the last year, she has been training for the 200 meters, a race she can legally compete in without having to alter her genetic makeup through surgery or medication.

She followed that up with a tweet on Thursday, vowing to fight for the human rights of female athletes, both on and off the track, until we can all run free the way we were born.

Exercise and diet are more important than ever with the coronavirus at large – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

If your life these days is anything like mine, a pre-pandemic routine that included regular exercise and disciplined eating has probably given way to sedentary evenings on a big chair, binge-watching reruns of your favorite TV series while guzzling chocolate ice cream or mac n cheese.

But lets not beat ourselves up about it. Several doctors I spoke with recently said most of their patients and many of their colleagues are struggling to maintain healthy habits amid the anxiety of the pandemic. The Quarantine 15 (pounds, that is) is a real phenomenon.

The double challenge of protecting our health, including our immune systems, while battling unhealthy temptations is a struggle everyone is dealing with, says Dr. David Kilgore, director of the integrative medicine program at the University of California-Irvine.

Well before COVID-19, more than 40% of U.S. adults were obese, which puts them at risk for COVID-19s worst outcomes. But even people accustomed to physical fitness and good nutrition are having trouble breaking the bad habits theyve developed over the past five months.

Karen Clark, a resident of Knoxville, Tennessee, discovered competitive rowing later in life, and her multiple weekly workouts burned off any excess calories she consumed. But the pandemic changed everything: She could no longer meet up with her teammates to row and stopped working out at the YMCA.

Suddenly, she was cooped up at home. And, as for many people, that led to a more sedentary lifestyle, chained to the desk, with no meetings outside the house or walks to lunch with colleagues.

I reverted to comfort food and comfortable routines and watching an awful lot of Netflix and Amazon Prime, just like everybody else, Clark says. When I gained 10 pounds and I was 25, I just cut out the beer and ice cream for a week. When you gain 12 pounds at 62, its a long road back.

She started along that road in July, when she stopped buying chips, ice cream and other treats. And in August, she rediscovered the rowing machine in her basement.

But dont worry if you lack Clarks discipline, or a rowing machine. You can still regain some control over your life.

A good way to start is to establish some basic daily routines, since in many cases thats exactly what the pandemic has taken away, says Dr. W. Scott Butsch, director of obesity medicine at the Cleveland Clinics Bariatric and Metabolic Institute. He recommends you bookend your day with physical activity, which can be as simple as a short walk in the morning and a longer one after work.

And, especially if you have kids at home who will be studying remotely this fall, prepare your meals at the beginning of the day, or even the beginning of the week, he says.

If you havent exercised in a while, start slow and gradually get yourself up to where you can tolerate an elevated heart rate, says Dr. Leticia Polanco, a family medicine doctor with the South Bay Primary Medical Group, just south of San Diego. If your gym is closed or you cant get together with your regular exercise buddies, there are plenty of ways to get your body moving at home and in your neighborhood, she says.

Go for a walk, a run or a bike ride, if one of those activities appeals to you. Though many jurisdictions across the United States require residents to wear masks when out in public, it may not be necessary and may even be harmful to some people with respiratory conditions while doing strenuous exercise.

Its clearly hard to exercise with a mask on, says Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases at Stanford Universitys School of Medicine. We go hiking up in the foothills and we take our masks with us and we dont wear them unless somebody starts coming the other way. Then we will put the mask on, and then we take it off and we keep going.

If you prefer to avoid the mask question altogether, think of your house as a cleverly disguised gym. Put on music and dance, or hula-hoop, Polanco suggests. You can also pump iron if you have dumbbells, or find a cable TV station with yoga or other workout programs.

If you search on the internet for exercise videos, you will find countless workouts for beginners and experienced fitness buffs alike. Try one of the seven-minute workout apps so popular these days. You can download them from Google Play or the Apple Store.

If you miss the camaraderie of exercising with others, virtual fitness groups might seem like a pale substitute, but they can provide motivation and accountability, as well as livestreamed video workouts with like-minded exercisers. One way to find such groups is to search for virtual fitness community.

Many gyms are also offering live digital fitness classes and physical training sessions, often advertised on their websites.

If group sports is your thing, you may or may not have options, depending on where you live.

In Los Angeles, indoor and outdoor group sports in municipal parks are shut down until further notice. The only sports allowed are tennis and golf.

In Montgomery County, Maryland, the Ron Schell Draft League, a softball league for men 50 and older, resumes play early this month after sitting out the spring season due to COVID-19, says Dave Hyder, the leagues commissioner.

But he says it has been difficult to get enough players because of worries about COVID.

In the senior group, you have quite a lot of people who are in a high-risk category or may have a spouse in a high-risk category, and they dont want to chance playing, says Hyder, 67, who does plan to play.

Players will have to stay at least 6 feet apart and wear masks while off the field. On the field, the catcher is the only player required to wear a mask. Thats because masks can steam up glasses or slip, causing impaired vision that could be dangerous to base runners or fielders, Hyder explains.

Whatever form of exercise you choose, remember it wont keep you healthy unless you also reduce consumption of fatty and sugary foods that can raise your risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension all COVID-19 risk factors.

Kim Guess, a dietitian at UC-Berkeley, recommends that people lay in a healthy supply of beans and lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds, as well as frozen vegetables, tofu, tempeh and canned fish, such as tuna and salmon.

Start with something really simple, she said. It could even be a vegetable side dish to go with what theyre used to preparing.

Whatever first steps you decide to take, now is a good time to start eating better and moving your body more.

Staying healthy is so important these days, more than at any other time, because we are fighting this virus which doesnt have a treatment, says the Cleveland Clinics Butsch. The treatment is our immune system.

Salaso Health’s telemedicine and live exercise platform enable US healthcare teams to stay safely connected with COVID-19 patients – Bio-IT World

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES - Sep 10, 2020 - In the current pandemic environment, face-to-face physical therapy visits are less viable due to increasing demands on the healthcare system, as well as the enactment of stay-at-home measures and the reticence of patients particularly those from at-risk groups to visit a clinic or hospital setting. The Salaso Health platform is a HIPAA-compliant and secure telemedicine service that allows healthcare providers to continue patient-centered care remotely, including secure video consultations and live exercise demonstrations.

Using the Salaso platform, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physical therapists can reach out to patients through a telemedicine visit and assign specific exercises during the virtual appointment. During the visit, providers can prescribe exercises based on evidence-based protocols in the form of HD videos developed by Salaso. The platform features more than 3,000 exercise videos and 260 evidence-based templates for up to 60 different Musculoskeletal conditions from early to late rehabilitation. It includes educational content, records patient adherence and pain levels and provides patient reminders.

"We are an experienced provider of virtual patient care, and with the first reports of COVID-19 cases, we put all our resources toward helping healthcare teams adapt to this crisis, said AoifeNMhuir, CEO, Salaso. Our platform ensures healthcare systems can deliver safe and efficient patient care remotely, and its utilization by hospitals and healthcare practices has increased rapidly over the last couple of months. Our research and development team are also working closely with clinical and academic partners to create specialized rehabilitation resources for the expected Tsunami of rehabilitation needs of patients who recover from COVID-19 over the next 12-18 months. During these challenging times, we want to provide any support we can.

The Salaso platform has been adopted across healthcare services in Ireland and the UK over the last few years and supported by Enterprise Ireland, Irelands trade and innovation agency. In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company supported many hospital and rehabilitation services in switching from mainly face to face therapy services to fully remote and virtual rehabilitation services. As telehealth was already accepted as a model of care delivery in physical therapy in Europe, many services switched overnight or within a short space of time to delivering care remotely using the Salaso platform.

As face-to-face rehabilitation classes were canceled due to the pandemic, Salaso was able to support services in delivering virtual rehabilitation classes where patients were able to continue to engage and access classes from the comfort of their own homes.

One Irish hospital that continued to deliver pulmonary rehabilitation classes virtually during the lockdown period for groups of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) found that all patients improved exercise capacity, 83% improved COPD health status, 71% improved Quality of Life score and 75% reported that they preferred exercising at home than in a hospital setting.

The experience of Salaso in delivering virtual rehabilitation in value-based healthcare settings in Europe enables the company to bring insights in providing effective rehabilitation for both COVID-19 and non-COVID patients to its U.S. customers, including New Yorks Northwell Health Hospitals.

"I found the Salaso platform invaluable in treating my stroke patients who were confined to their homes due to COVID-19, said Dr. Salman Azhar, Director of Stroke, Northwell Health. Using Salaso, my patients continued to engage with the regular exercise therapy which is vital to maximizing their recovery from the stroke and improving their quality of life. My patients found that the high quality of the exercise videos in the Salaso platform helped them in understanding both the importance of doing the exercises and how to perform them correctly at home."

Remote physical therapy and rehabilitation services are the key to keeping people out of the hospital and safely in their own homes, said Jennie Lynch, Senior Vice President, Lifesciences, Enterprise Ireland. Patients needing rehabilitation after a stroke, brain injury, post-surgery, or a serious illness such as cancer, heart disease, or even COVID-19, may have limited access to rehab during the pandemic. The Salaso platform makes it possible for people to get the recovery exercises, information and guidance they need from home.

Jake Hargis, MPH, Vice President of Operations, discusses the use of Salaso Health at the Nevada-based Spine Nevada Minimally Invasive Spine Institute.

"Due to COVID-19, we are witnessing a rapid shift in rules and regulations surrounding telemedicine. The recent regulatory changes have allowed our practice to expand the use of virtual visits for all spine and musculoskeletal specialties, including physical therapy. The most recent Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) update has further expanded telemedicine use. It allows physical therapists to be reimbursed for telehealth visits and the previously allowed e-visits, explains Hargis. At Spine Nevada, we implemented the Salaso Health platform several years ago as an added benefit to our patients. Salaso allows our physical therapy team to prescribe personalized at-home exercise programs with HD video instruction to help improve compliance and health outcomes for each patient. As we have ramped up our telemedicine department during COVID-19, Salaso has helped our physical therapy team maintain a high level of patient satisfaction and engagement, all while our patients remain safely at home. In the current environment, healthcare providers now more than ever need to adapt to remote care to stay relevant and competitive.

3 major health benefits of jumping jacks and how to do them properly – Insider – INSIDER

While you may not have thought about jumping jacks since grade school, the health benefits of this simple move continue well into adulthood.

"Jumping jacks have a wealth of benefits like mobility, increased blood flow, training in the frontal plane, and overall joint motion," says Jonathan Mike, a strength and conditioning coach and professor of exercise science and sports performance at Grand Canyon University in Arizona.

Read on to learn more about the benefits of jumping jacks and how you can incorporate them into your fitness routine.

Jumping jacks are a type of total body exercise that you can do anywhere, with no equipment.

More specifically, jumping jacks are a plyometric exercise. Plyometrics are explosive aerobic moves that increase speed, quickness, and power and they work your whole body.

Most plyometric exercises include jumping, so your muscles exert the most effort and force in short bursts of time. Other plyometric exercises include:

Jumping jacks are beneficial to your health because they combine cardiovascular conditioning with strength work. As you jump, you're working against gravity and using your body weight for resistance, which can improve strength. Plus, the constant repetition of the move gets your heart rate up and improves cardiovascular fitness.

Since jumping jacks elevate your heart rate, they can also improve your cardiovascular fitness.

A 2014 study in BioMed Research International found that a four week high-intensity circuit training program, which included jumping jacks, improved several heart health markers in obese men.

The participants saw improvements in their resting heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, and body fat levels. Interestingly, the improvements were comparable to those found in much longer-duration circuit, resistance training, and aerobic exercise programs.

Compared to other exercises that boost your cardiovascular fitness, jumping jacks can add more intensity. However, they should be mixed in with another conditioning exercise, says Mike. Jumping jacks alone are not sustainable for long durations, so it's best to incorporate jumping jacks along with a cardio workout, like running or cycling.

Many types of jump training like jumping jacks are also beneficial for your bone health.

For example, a 2006 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that young women who did a regimen of 10 vertical jumps three days a week for six months strengthened the bones in their legs, as well as their lower spine.

It's important to improve bone density, or the strength of bones, because we naturally lose density as we age. If the loss is significant, osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and makes them more likely to break, can occur.

Jumping jacks help to mitigate this loss and can reduce the risk for osteoporosis later in life, particularly for girls and women.

As with any exercise, it's important to ensure you do jumping jacks with proper form.

You can add jumping jacks to your cardio routine for an extra boost to your workout, though it's best to alternate days to give your muscles a chance to recover. Start with two sets of 10 jumping jacks, and eventually you'll be able to work your way up to more as you gain stamina and strength.

Keep in mind the following safety tips to avoid injury:

Overall, jumping jacks bring a range of whole-body health benefits, and they're simple to master. And unless you have an injury to your lower body that may prohibit this type of movement, they can be a highly effective move to add to your fitness routine.

HyFit Gear 1 Bypass the Gym and Stay Fit Anywhere [Review] – Gstyle magazine

When we look back at 2020, well probably see this as the year where everything went completely bonkers. This is the year where many of us had to change our daily routines and become warier of how we interacted with people and public equipment. A good example is a gym where many people can touch a single piece of equipment without sanitization. Not only that, but many cities are also still forcing gyms to stay closed which means your once lean and buff bod is looking a little flabby right now. Thats why we are seeing an increase in products such as the Hyfit Gear 1 that allows you to work out in the comfort of your own home using scientifically proven, resistance training and technology.

So what is the HyFit Gear 1? Its basically a two-part system. The first part is the equipment which is the Gear 1 itself. The gear 1 is a highly modular piece of equipment that can be used in a variety of different ways that allow for a complete body workout from just about anywhere. It can be anchored to a door or any sturdy object, or worn on the body using the ankle and wrist bands. The resistive bands themselves can be adjusted to increase or decrease resistance, depending on your needs. The pice de rsistance of the equipment however are the sensors embedded within the resistance bands.

The sensors deliver workout data in real-time and users can view stats like the number of reps completed, exercise duration, speed, and resistance used. All this is possible too due to the second part of the system and thats the HyFit mobile app. The mobile app is a true workout companion, providing the platform where all the data the sensors collect are stored. Not only that, but the app also provides detailed workouts and exercise programs you can follow along with through video. There are extensive videos for programs, workouts, and individual exercises.

The app however doesnt seem to let you export any of the collected data to sources like Google Fit or any other popular platform.

The HyFit Gear 1 is very simple to set up anywhere. As stated above, the Gear 1 includes two smart resistance bands with handles that can be attached in a variety of ways. Theres a door anchor that mounts to the top of any door. Theres a foreign anchor that is used to attach the bands to objects like poles or anything else that is sturdy. Lastly, there are body anchors that can be attached to your wrists or ankles.

As you can see, Gear 1 is very versatile which also means you can use it anywhere and not just your home. The entire package fits inside a small carry bag which means you can also take it with you when youre away from home. Combine that with the HyFit App and you have a full-body, portable gym and personal trainer.

Those who are itching to get back to the gym but cant, should really check out these home workout options. The HyFit Gear 1 is the perfect solution to working out from home, or from anywhere really. I like the fact that it is not permanently attached to anything and I can easily move it around my house. I can attach it to any door that isnt being used or use it in any space that is open. I can even use the Gear 1 outdoors.

There arent really any limitations as to where you can use this and thats what makes it so appealing. I also really like how the app is set up with the exercise tutorials and workout programs you can follow. The videos are very clear and concise and teach you the proper form you should take for each activity. And since were all about smart devices these days, its great to see that the Gear 1 can automatically track metrics such as your reps, sets, weight used, and how many calories you burn per exercise.

The HyFit Gear 1 makes for a great portable gym that really seems to work. While there are probably some exercises you still cant do without hitting the gym, this is a great alternative for the ones you can. The Gear 1 is also the only true smart resistance training system on the market with sensors that can track all your workouts. Gear 1 believes that if you can measure it, you can improve it. This what sets Gear 1 apart from others.

With that said, the Hyfit Gear 1 is also relatively affordable, when compared to how much you would spend for a gym membership. The whole kit is priced under $300 and its a small price to pay if you want to stay fit while the gyms are closed.

You can pick up your own HyFit Gear 1 on Amazon here.

Some Big UWS Gyms Are Reopening; Here’s What To Expect – westsiderag.com

New equipment and rules.

By A. Campbell

Last month, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that gyms throughout New York State would begin reopening in late August and early September. Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the city in mid-March, Upper West Siders have managed to get exercise through a variety of means including virtual programs, private training sessions, and outdoor group fitness classes. In lieu of gyms, Central Park and Riverside Park have welcomed an increasing number of runners, cyclists, rollerbladers, yogis, and others.

As infection rates have continued to decline and outdoor fitness enthusiasts begin to wonder what theyll do during the coming cold winter months, the reopening of gyms has prompted questions about what safety measures and precautions businesses are taking on behalf of their members. Under the current guidelines, gyms are limited to 33 percent of their total capacity. Members and staff are required to wear masks at all times and gyms must undergo inspections by local authorities to ensure that air filtration systems and sanitization techniques are in accordance with CDC recommendations.

For now, Mayor Bill de Blasio has allowed gyms like New York Sports Club, Equinox, and the Marlene Meyerson JCC health club to move forward, but he has not yet approved the reopening of some boutique fitness studios, indoor pools, or group classes within gyms. A group of smaller fitness businesses have sued the city.

With these changes in mind, the West Side Rag decided to investigate what Upper West Siders can expect as they return to fitness facilities around the neighborhood.

New York Sports Club West 73rd StreetOn a recent Saturday afternoon, approximately a dozen members could be seen working out on the first floor of the New York Sports Club on West 73rd Street. According to the gyms Fitness Manager, Jimmy Chen, the clubs capacity in adherence to the official 33 percent limit is 55 people. In recent days, Chen said the gym occupancy tends to hover around 40 45 members inside at one time. Upon entry, members undergo a touch-less temperature check as well as a brief survey with questions about their recent travel history, contact with others, and whether they have experienced any Covid-19 symptoms.

In order to ensure that the gym does not exceed its 33 percent capacity limit, Chen explained that staff members require each member to check in and check out at the front desk, allowing the NYSC personnel to maintain a real-time tally of how many individuals are inside the facility. He confirmed the gym had passed a ventilation test administered by the city and that staff members were maintaining rigorous cleaning and sanitation practices every two hours by completing a disinfection checklist of all equipment, locker rooms, and high-touch surfaces such as door handles and faucets. In adherence to the new guidelines, showers, steam rooms, and saunas remain off limits. Chen noted the gyms reopening has received an enthusiastic response from members and newcomers alike. I expected a lot of people to be scared to come back to the gym, but we actually signed up about 35 people for new memberships in the first two days we were open, he said.

As of Monday, September 14th, Town Sports International, the parent company of New York Sports Club and other gym chains, filed for bankruptcy.

Marlene Meyerson JCC ManhattanJCC members can look forward to the facility reopening on September 21st. According to Melissa Donovan, Chief Operating Officer, Health and Wellness, the facility has gone to great lengths to ensure members will benefit from thoughtful and efficient safety measures. One thing weve done is to focus on our values, Donovan said. Taking responsibility for the health and wellness of our community is a core value at the JCC. We have taken reopening very seriously by establishing new protocols, developing an online reservation system, and remapping our spaces to support social distancing.

Members will be asked to make a reservation during 90-minute exercise blocks throughout the day using the JCC website or the JCC/MindBody app on their phones. Following each 90-minute workout block, all members will exit the floor and the JCC will close for 30 minutes to conduct a deep cleaning before the next 90-minute workout block opens to the following group. Members can expect touch-less temperature checks and enhanced cleaning and sanitization procedures which incorporate the use of electrostatic spray disinfection.

JCC visitors will also notice updated entry and exit protocols which are meant to reduce traffic crossover between children and adults. The JCC nursery school will utilize one entrance while fitness members use another. Timed workout reservations and health declarations will be required of each individual in advance of their visit to the JCC health club. We have the greatest members, Donovan said. Of course, they are asking lots of questions about reopening timelines and what to expect when they arrive at the building, but by and large, our members are expressing confidence and excitement to return to the JCC.

Margo McCann in the Pure Barre studio.

Pure Barre Columbus AvenueWhile large gyms like New York Sports Club, Equinox, and the JCC have been granted approval to begin reopening, boutique fitness studios like Pure Barre on Columbus Avenue between W. 79th and W. 80th Streets have not. Margo McCann, Franchise Owner of Pure Barre Columbus Avenue remarked that she and other boutique fitness studio owners are anxiously awaiting the green light from city authorities.

McCann felt that the delay in reopening boutique fitness studios like hers was based on a misconception of what a Pure Barre class entails. I think what a lot of government officials dont seem to understand about indoor classes is that they arent all highly aerobic, deep breathing, sweaty classes, McCann said. Classic barre is low impact. Theres no jumping. Youre working to your own ability and focusing on small, isometric movements to create muscle tone. I think thats where the frustration comes from that you might hear from [fitness studio owners] versus the gym. The fact that you can come into a space without touching anything but your own shoes to me seems safe, or just as safe if not safer, than getting on a treadmill at the gym where you are getting hot and sweaty and you are breathing deeply.

McCann has made adjustments to the studio in recent months and is prepared to move forward as soon as boutique fitness studios are permitted to reopen. Pure Barre clients will check themselves in to a class using an app on their phones. The check in process will include a Covid health survey and waiver that students must complete, as well as an in-person contactless temperature check. McCann has remapped the studio space by placing tape on the floor to mark the boundaries of nine separate 77 foot squares. No one is going to be in that block but you, she said. Each block will include a plastic bin with hand sanitizer, weights, balls, and other workout accessories where students can also store personal items during class. All equipment, as well as the barre and high-touch surfaces, will be cleaned before and after each class.

Other Upper West Side GymsWhile other large health clubs around the Upper West Side including the West Side YMCA and Equinox on Columbus Avenue and W. 67th Street did not respond to inquiries for comment for this article, both have updated their respective websites to provide information about new safety and sanitization procedures. The West Side YMCA reopened on Tuesday, September 15th with updated hours for routine cleanings. Equinox has published new house rules for all members.
