Sarcopenia, or age-related muscle disease, is one such pathology that has been brought to attention. It is characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function and it severely affects the quality of life of an individual. Sarcopenia affects approximately 30% of the US population above the ages of 60 and 50% of the US population above the age of 80.

The disease severely constrains physical activity, even of the mildest form, hence affecting the autonomy and physical abilities of a person. It is important to note that even though aging is considered the main etiologic factor and it commonly presents itself in the elderly, the initiation process of the disease begins earlier on in life and can be affected by lack of physical activity and maintaining a sedentary life. Both of these can cause a person to develop sarcopenia later on in life.

The etiology of sarcopenia is mainly aging, however the molecular mechanisms behind the development of sarcopenia range from a change in the muscular innervation to altering of muscle metabolism.

A recent study conducted and led by Professor Markus Regg discovered that the suppression of mTORC1 can be used to treat sarcopenia. In literature, nine processes are hypothesized to be involved in the process of aging. All these processes meet the three criteria:

The protein complex, mTORC1 was found to be the central protein for the functioning of all nine biological processes, in all the studies. Due to this, Ruegg and his team decided to study and suppress this proteins function with the aim of dampening the progression of sarcopenia.

The protein complex, mTORC1 controls protein synthesis and muscle mass. Overactivity of this complex is important for the development of muscle hypertrophy and complete blocking of it results in myopathy.

Ruegg and his team used the drug, rapamycin, in this study to suppress the protein complex, mTORC1, and hence treat sarcopenia. They applied the information already available in the literature and their own hypothesis to this animal-model study.

Rapamycin works by preserving muscle size and function, along with the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) integrity. As one ages, NMJ deteriorates and this age-related NMJ instability is the driving force for mTORC1 related sarcopenia.

Rapamycin works on suppression of mTORC1 and it can reverse the damage done to NMJ along with sarcopenia associated damage to skeletal muscle. Ruegg concluded that rapamycin is extremely beneficial for the treatment of sarcopenia as it showed great results in the mice models.

Furthermore, Ruegg and his team, with the help of Zavolan and the team developed an atlas, SarcoAtlas to help the medical community further study the gene expression and aging process together.

Malaysia needs more teachers – The Star Online

BEING a teacher can be a financially rewarding career.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said teachers could receive remuneration of over RM9,000 depending on the years of service.

Educators in school management positions can receive even more, he said when launching the I Want to Be A Teacher event at Kwang Hua Private High School last Sunday.

Some 160 students who attended the event were briefed about the teaching profession and what it entailed.

Describing the profession as recession-proof, he said teachers enjoyed many perks civil servants were entitled to including work stability, ample vacation time, fixed working hours and civil servant welfare for themselves and family.

The respected profession can also bring a great sense of accomplishment in an environment that promotes continuous learning through self-improvement workshops, he said.

Respect for teachers is greatly lacking in society and the fact that fewer youths are choosing to enrol in teaching courses is a cause for concern, he said, adding that there is a shortfall of teachers, not only in Chinese primary, secondary and independent schools, but also national schools.

The ministry was especially lacking in teachers for Physical Education, Design and Technology, Visual Arts, Special Needs, Science, English, Music, and Counselling subjects.

In a separate event on Monday, Mah advised youngsters to read more books of all languages to increase their general knowledge and also to get a better understanding of the national language.

He said reading can create cognitive engagement that improves vocabulary, thinking skills, concentration, and communication skills.

Reading can also build ones personality, because exposure to good books can enhance your emotional development, social involvement, cultural awareness, industrial intelligence, empathy, social perception, and emotional intelligence.

Noting that countless studies have been conducted by world-class institutions on the importance of reading and how it affects people, he shared that Yale researchers found that those who read books for 30 minutes daily lived an average of 23 months longer than non-readers.

He pointed out that Malaysia still has potential to boost its literacy rate which currently stands well above 90%.

The countrys literacy rate is high, but we should not rest on our laurels.

We should follow in the footsteps of advanced nations such as Finland, Japan, South Korea and Germany where the literacy rate is either 99% or 100%.

Touching on the Matthew Effects, he said the analogy coined by scholar and psychologist Keith Stanovich shows that a poor reader or struggling reader will suffer as he progresses in his life.

It will become worse as he goes to a higher level or as he gets older. In contrast, a person who likes to read or a good reader who reads more, will progress better in life. This means that the poor become poorer and the rich become richer, he said after launching the SJK(C) reading campaign or Kempen Galakan Membaca SJK(C) at the HGH Convention Centre.

Piloted in Chinese vernacular schools, the nationwide reading campaign which began on Sept 7 was aimed at inculcating a love of reading among students, he said.

Its main objective was to drive up students interest towards reading books of different languages, not just books in their mother tongue.

Mah said it was an expansion of an online reading campaign that was conducted by the Kuala Lumpur education department in May among local Chinese primary schools during the movement control order.

He hopes the initiative will also be conducted in Tamil and national schools.

Five programmes under the Kempen Galakan Membaca SJK(C) will be rolled out in stages in all Chinese primary schools across the nation, he said.

These include newspaper and book reading activities, quizzes and roving libraries.

The programmes are not only to encourage students, but society and parents to read.

Establishing a solid reading culture cant be done overnight and cooperation from all parties is needed to boost the countrys literacy rate, he said.

Teachers and the school administration play an important role in creating a strong reading culture but parents are crucial because education starts from home, he said adding that about 18.6% of the student population in SJK(C)s are made up of non-Chinese pupils and the percentage is increasing.

Over time, weve been eating much more of our calories from heavily processed foods, like sodas and packaged snacks, such as potato chips. In fact, Americans eat about 60% of their calories from highly processed foods. While convenient, we rely on these foods at the expense of other, more nutritious foods, like fruits and vegetables. Some studies also report that processed foods may be linked to unintentional weight gain and related problems, such as higher blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels.

In a study published in Cell Metabolism in 2019, researchers pitted a whole foods diet against a processed one. Twenty people went on both diets for two weeks, and while the meals varied dramatically, the calories, sugar, fat, fiber, carbs and protein were the same on both. Once meals were served, people were allowed to eat as much or as little as they wished.

Heres what happened: On the processed food diet, participants ate many more calories (averaging an extra 500 calories per day) and they gained an average of two pounds. They ate faster, too, which may indicate they werent filling up sufficiently, or it may mean their brains didnt have a chance to compute that they were full. Theres also the possibility that its especially easy to consume these foods quickly. Think about how fast you can eat a snack bar made with oats compared to a bowl of steel cut oatmeal.

Meanwhile when those same people went on to eat the whole foods diet, the opposite occurred; they lost two pounds. In other words, the quality of those calories mattered when it came to gaining or losing weight.

One factor that gets ignored in a CICO model is the fact that there is some variability in the number of calories that you actually absorb from whole foods compared to processed ones. So for example, if youre tracking your calories, there may be slight differences in the number of calories that you think youre eating compared to the number youre actually absorbing. This can work to your advantage if youre eating mostly whole foods and potentially to your disadvantage if you arent.

Studies that examine dietary patterns point to the fact that adults who consume the most servings of whole grains have lower body weights. One possible explanation is that calories from whole grains arent absorbed as efficiently as calories from refined grains. In one study involving both men and postmenopausal women, participants were assigned to diets with varying amounts of fiber, whole grains and refined grains, but the diets supplied each person an amount of calories meant to keep weight steady. After six weeks, people who were eating whole grains experienced a lift in resting metabolic rate, which means they burned more calories when they were inactive. They also excreted extra calories in their stool. Together, this led to a daily deficit of 92 calories.

Studies involving nuts have similarly found that we dont absorb as many calories from these foods, which may be why as part of a Mediterranean Diet theyre also linked with healthier body measurements.

Liquid calories are especially problematic because theres good evidence that your body doesnt compute them in the same way it computes calories you chew, so sodas and coffee drinks arent as likely to fill you up. If you drink these routinely, you may wind up in a calorie surplus because you still need to eat (and therefore, consume calories) to combat hunger.

It's important to remember that regulating your body weight is a dynamic process that involves not only the calories and quality of food you eat, but other factors as well.

The Good Morning Britain host, 55, revealed hes taking his new weight loss regime seriously, and has started seeing a personal trainer.

As well as this, he has reduced his alcohol intake.

Chatting about his lifestyle changes, he joked that wife Celia Walden has replaced all the good stuff with healthy alternatives.

Im going to see a new personal trainer, and unfortunately Celias taken it all quite seriously, so suddenly its all the good stuffs gone and all the kales come in and the quinoa and vegetables. A lot of vegetables. A lot of salmon, he said.

The ITV star will be back on screens tomorrow night, with the latest instalment of his Life Stories series.

And he has been joined by Colonel Tom Moore for the episode who he insisted was his favourite guest so far.

Despite having famous faces including Lionel Richie, Mo Farah and, most recently, Vinnie Jones grace the studio, he couldnt help but rave about the war hero to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning.

He said: I wanted to do him because I thought, Who is this guy?. We all know him for his mantra of tomorrow will be a better day, he gave us all hope and positivity in a really dark moment for the country, and I thought I needed to know more about him.

Hes hilarious, hes sharp as a whippet, hes got that Yorkshire grit and humour. Hes got a resilience about him, born from his war years, hes got everything. Hes a remarkable human being.

When people watch the show, its moving. He sheds tears in the most unexpected moment, hes incredibly open about his marriages, his life. His dressing room rider is almost beyond hilarity.

Colonel Tom also had some interesting requests on his rider, with Piers adding: He wanted a can of Coke, he wanted a Dairy Milk chocolate bar, and he wanted six blondes.

When I laughed, he said, the six is a variable number.

"Protein is a not-so-secret weapon when it comes to weight loss. The main reason for this is protein is satiating which means it makes you fuller for longer.

For adults, the general daily requirement is 0.6g of protein per kilogram bodyweight.

"So if you weigh 80kg, youd need around 48 grams protein daily to stay healthy, but increasing your protein intake might have benefits if youre trying to lose weight."

High protein foods include meat, fish, dairy, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds.
