What You Need to Know When Choosing Milk and Milk Alternatives – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic
For the last several years, non-dairy milk options have skyrocketed in popularity, directly challenging cow milk for grocery aisle dominance. From lactose tolerance issues to diets to going vegan or dairy-free, there are a number of reasons these alternatives are rising in prominence among shoppers.

But how do these alternatives stack up to the long-time staple of cows milk? Most alternatives are fortified with added calcium and vitamin D thats naturally occurring in dairy, but what about other nutritional items like calories and protein?
We took a look at eight varieties of milk and spoke with registered dietician Julia Zumpano, RD, LD, about the differences between all of them and what tips you should keep in mind when choosing one.
The traditional choice of milk, dairy milk, remains the most popular option, especially for children. Cows milk offers a good balance of naturally occurring calories from fat, protein and essential vitamins and minerals, like vitamin D and calcium, providing key nutrients kids need for growth and development.
But Zumpano points out, Adults can benefit from cows milk too; as you age, you lose bone density and need sufficient dietary calcium to support healthy bones. And milk is a great source for that calcium.
But even within just the dairy milk category, there are still choices to make with regards to
According to Zumpano, It really depends. For children under 2, its best to give them whole milk. After that, its based on the individual needs and taste preferences of the child.
For adults, she says its also variable but points out, If you have high cholesterol or youre trying to reduce calories for weight loss, stick to 2% or less. But for weight gain or if you have difficulty gaining weight, go with whole milk.
One of the more popular non-dairy alternatives, almond milk is rich in Vitamin E while being lower in calories than cows milk. Its also popular for cooking purposes, like with oatmeal, and as an addition to your morning coffee.
That said, if you have a nut allergy, youll obviously want to steer clear of almond milk. It also does not provide either protein or fiber, so if youre drinking almond milk, make sure to make up for those nutrients elsewhere. Zumpano recommends avoiding sweetened versions with their sugar additives and opting for unsweetened varieties instead.
If your vegan or lactose-intolerant, cashew milk is yet another nut-based alternative that has a rich, creamy taste. Cashew milk is loaded up with vitamin E, like almond milk, and low on calories, cholesterol and sugar.
While store-bought cashew milk is, like other options, usually fortified with vitamin D and calcium, it lacks fiber and protein. And, finally, like almond milk, cashew milk is a no-go for anyone with nut allergies.
A very popular non-dairy option, the plant-based milk alternative is cholesterol-free, low in saturated fats and high in protein. Oh, and its another great lactose-free option and is great for cooking needs, too.
Soy milk, especially if sweetened, can be high in calories and if you have a soy allergen, youll want to avoid this option.
Besides being a milk alternative for consumers with allergies (nut, soy or lactose), it has a sweeter taste which usually means less sugar additives. And, like other alternatives, its well fortified for other nutrients.
The big downside is that rice milk can be high in carbohydrates and calories while having very little protein and fiber.
Yes, coconut milk beverage because simply coconut milk usually refers to the fat- and calorie-laden version found on your grocery shelf that is traditionally used for baking needs.
Like other options, though, coconut milk has zero protein and while its low in calories, its also high in fat. And though there are many coconut milk options that have been diluted to offer less fat and calories, Zumpano advises, Keep in mind the fat found in coconut milk is saturated fat, which we want to keep at a minimum if heart health is a concern.
The upside, she says, is that coconut milk, if unsweetened, contains no carbs in an 8-ounce serving and can offer a thick and creamy plant-based alternative suitable to dairy and nut allergies.
Hemp milk comes with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and fewer calories than whole milk but, as Zumpano notes, its not as readily available at major grocery stores.
A more recent, trendy addition to non-dairy milk options, oat milk is made from, well, oats, water and additional ingredients like added oil, gums or thickeners. One big advantage of oat milk for those with dietary restrictions or food sensitivities is that its naturally free of dairy, lactose, soy and nuts.
Like a lot of other non-dairy options, oat milk generally comes with added calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A and riboflavin. It also typically has a bit more protein and fiber than other alternatives.
The downside? Oat milk usually has more carbs and calories than other plant-based options, with a serving from most brands adding up to around 100 calories or greater
One big thing to keep in mind, says Zumpano, is that all of these non-dairy options have a wide range in terms of supplements. Says Zumpano, Vitamin and mineral supplementation is variable amongst brands even with the same product, like unsweetened almond milk.
If youre looking to maximize certain vitamins or nutrients, such as calcium, vitamin D, vitamin E or riboflavin, she says, check specific brands so you can compare and find the highest value of what youre hoping to achieve.
Besides all these pros and cons of each option, there are a few other things to keep in mind when choosing which milk works best for you.
Chances are that if youre an adult, youre not drinking much chocolate milk (were not judging if you do, though), but your kids might be. And many non-dairy milk options come in flavored varieties (typically vanilla) to help make them a bit more palpable.
Theres nothing wrong with these flavored milks, of course, but its all about moderation. These options typically come with added sugars and that brings more calories which offset some of the healthier reasons youre drinking milk in the first place.
Instead, Zumpano suggests choosing the unsweetened flavored options or add flavor to the plain, unsweetened versions, like vanilla or cocoa powder.
Raw milk is another way of saying unpasteurized milk. And while some people believe raw milk has more nutrients, promotes better health and might be okay for those with lactose intolerance, its actually not advisable to drink it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unpasteurized milk is 150 times more likely to cause foodborne illness than pasteurized milk and 13 times more likely to lead to hospitalization.
Pasteurized milk has the same nutrients as unpasteurized and either option will still trigger an allergic reaction for lactose-intolerant drinkers.

Weve previously looked at how the architectural feats of humanity have simply grown in magnitude over time, tracing this progress as far back as the Stone Age.
The question now is, how much higher and further into the skies can we reach? This infographic by Alans Factory Outlet looks at the glittering urban skyscrapers on every continent. We also examine some interesting facts about each region.
The first name on this list certainly needs no introduction. Dubais Burj Khalifa is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Middle East. With just a one minute elevator ride to the Burj Khalifas pinnacle, it must seem like even the sky is no longer the limit.
Ping An Finance Center from Shenzhen edges into fifth place on the list, and its worth mentioning the speed of change occurring in the city. Chinas hi-tech capital will see the completed construction of approximately 51 buildings over 145m (476ft) by the end of 2020.
The One World Trade Center, built to memorialize the loss of the Twin Towers after September 11th, 2001, is also informally called the Freedom Tower. Its exactly 1,776ft highsymbolizing the year the U.S. Declaration of Independence was adopted.
While the Central Park Tower has reached its full height, parts of the interior are still undergoing construction. The price of luxury apartments in the complex start at $7 million for a two-bedroom, just in case you had any extra change lying around.
In fact, the illustrious New York City holds four of the top five buildings on the continent. However, a nod also goes to the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in Chicago, an imposing office building which held the title of worlds tallest building for 25 years, until the Petronas Towers were erected in Kuala Lumpur.
The top five tallest buildings in Europe can all be found in Russia. Whats more, those from Moscow are all clustered within a single towering business district known as Moscow-City.
This begs the questionwhy doesnt Europe build more skyscrapers? Theres an interesting historical reasoning behind this. As North Americas new age ideals and influence on the world stage grew, European cultural values focused on preserving heritage.
Of course, with globalization, things have changed somewhat, and major financial centers of London, Paris and more boast unique skylines of their own.
Australias buildings unsurprisingly dominate the tallest ones in the region. In the surfers paradise, Q1 on the Gold Coast has a twist in its designliterally. Its architecture is loosely based on studies of ribbons moving in the wind, as they wrap around the tower.
The Eureka Tower has a fascinating story behind it, too. Its named after the 1854 Victorian gold rush, with elements of the building reflecting this historyfrom a gold crown to a red stripe for revolutionary bloodshed.
The tallest buildings in South America are mainly residential, and often found in Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuelabut Chile is the one standout exception to this rule.
Gran Torre Santiago is a retail and office complex, and the largest shopping mall across Latin America. Its often considered the heart of Chile, and built to hold its ground steadfastly in the earthquake-prone country.
Located in South Africas largest city, The Leonardo is the jewel of Johannesburg. The tallest building in Africa was also designed by an architectural team of mostly women.
For African nations, these tallest buildings mean much more than just breaking engineering records. In a journal article, its posited that skyscrapers can act as a symbol of power and the continents drive towards modernity.
A few more mammoth buildings are expected to rise up in the next couple years. Saudi Arabias 167-floor Jeddah Tower, while currently on hold, could someday take over the first place crown.
Meanwhile, Dubais set to outdo itselfand compete directly with Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom Tower is inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and is proposed to break the 1 kilometer-high (or 0.6 mile) mark not yet achieved by any building.
Who knows what greater heights we could scale this century?
Each of us is carving a stone, erecting a column, or cutting a piece of stained glass in the construction of something much bigger than ourselves.

Open The Doors: In Fitness, I’m Often The Only Black Person In The Room – Club Industry
I love being American and I love being Black.
Interesting, right? As author, educator and civil rights advocate W.E.B. Dubois stated in his acclaimed book The Souls of Black Folk, it is a peculiar sensationbeing a proud American and loving the brown skin you are in. Some look at you with pity and others with contempt. Dubois wrote, One ever feels his two-nessan American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder.
Despite all the pain and struggle, I would choose my skin and this country againwith a few tweaks of course.
By the way, theres something else I love dearlyfitness.
My love of fitness and Black culture may also seem like warring ideals to many. We've all seen disparaging numbers of Blacks with obesity and chronic diseases. However, this could not be further from my personal truth. Despite growing up in small, rural Swansea, South Carolina, my father and grandmother stressed the importance of daily physical activity and a well-rounded diet. I often ask myself how they could have done so while living in a food desert with little to no infrastructure for organized sport and recreation. Later, I realized that it had been passed down from generation to generation because, to my ancestors, a strong, healthy body was the only way a Black person could make an honest living in America.
As I got older, however, I saw a shift in these values. The 1990s saw Black Americans shift to higher-paying yet more sedentary jobs. As a result, chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes began to plague my community. So, when I enrolled at South Carolina State University (SCSU), one of the historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU), to study sport and exercise, the goal was to get an education that would help me change the lives of people in my community. It was at SCSU that I fell madly in love with fitness. I mean, I loved it before, but after learning the science of exercise from professors that meshed theory, application and Black culture, I was ready to commit my whole life to it. When I left the cozy confines of my beloved HBCU, however, things changed.
For the first time, I felt like fitness did not love me back. It loved my culture, but I am not sure it loved me. I remember my first day as a newly minted certified personal trainer. As I walked in the gym, I could hear hip hop and R&B music blaring through the sound systems as some members trained and others participated in group exercise classes with choreography that mimicked traditional hip hop and urban dance. Despite the familiar sounds and movement, none of the members looked like me, so I made it my mission to help convert minority prospects into members. One could say I was a token, but I prefer the term trailblazer. I knew firsthand how fitness can change a persons life intrinsically and extrinsically, so if I had to be the token Black trainer in order to help someone from my community discover their best self, so be it. Little did I know, doing so would introduce me to a new love: marketing and consumer behavior.
At the age of 22, I left personal training for graduate school at Indiana University and started my first fitness marketing and communication business, Black Health and Fitness.com. The goal was to bridge exercise and Black culture. This led me to attend my first major fitness conference in Dallas. Quite honestly, I was surprised to see it closely resembled that first day in the gym hundreds of attendees, and no one looked like me. However, this feeling was a little different. Instead of feeling like I could make my mark by bringing in more minorities, I got the sense that this was an exclusive club that may not be so accepting of new members. These fears quickly turned into reality.
As I made my way through the crowd at a conference mixer, I saw an old friend who introduced me to a group of her friends that were chatting over drinks. After telling them of my aspirations for my newly formed company, one member of the group abruptly stopped me. She exclaimed, I have a great idea. As you can imagine, I was all ears, and my heart was pacing waiting to hear what she had to say. It is something I will never forget. Why dont you call up Jay-Z and that other guy Puff Daddy, she said. I responded by saying, Oh, do you know them? She said No, but I assumed you did. I wanted to ask her why she would think that, but I was too embarrassed to ask and I immediately left the mixer and the conference.
It would be several years before I would attend another fitness conference. However, the next one would change the course of my career and standing in the industry. During my fitness conference hiatus, I completed my doctorate and wrote my dissertation on building brand equity in the fitness industry. I decided to present my research findings at a conference in Athens, Greece. While there, I met a representative from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) who felt my expertise in fitness branding and consumer behavior would be beneficial to the organization. I felt the relationship would be mutually beneficial, as ACEs mission aligns with my current role as a tenured associate professor at the Indiana University School of Public Health. Ive been partnering with ACE ever since, and I must say, for the first time I feel like the industry loves me too.
Despite this, Im still disheartened because when I walk into most rooms, Im still the only Black person. Yes, I now feel the love, but loving only me is not enough. We as an industry must open the doors to a more diverse group of professionals. No one has to lose their seat at the table, but I ask you to be kind enough to bring an extra chair and offer it to someone who historically hasnt gotten an invitation.
Representation matters. As Dubois stated, Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow.
