From fibromyalgia to eczema do you have an undiagnosed illness like Lady Gaga? – The Sun

FOR most people, a trip to the GP goes something like this: Symptoms, examination and diagnosis.

But for some patients, that is not their reality.

17

Instead, they live each day with an undiagnosed condition and the agony of not knowing can leave them questioning if life is really worth living.

A condition such as endometriosis can take on average seven years to diagnose, while superstar Lady Gaga has opened up about her battle with fibromyalgia which can also be hard to spot.

New BBC series The Diagnosis Detectives, hosted by Dr Michael Mosley, aims to help find answers with the help of 12 experts.

Here, we meet some of their patients.

17

WHAT started as just small patches of eczema on his hands soon spread like wildfire around his body and has left Neil Cobb in agony.

The 64-year-olds skin is so itchy, he has scratched off the pigment.

17

For four years he has been plagued by red, open sores and he once collapsed unconscious and was left fighting for his life after an infection engulfed his body.

But Neils real torment is having no idea what is causing his pain. He is one of many people living with undiagnosed health conditions.

What makes these peoples illnesses much harder to cope with is the lack of answers and that uncertainty can cause mental as well as physical problems.

Neil tells tomorrow night's episode of new BBC series The Diagnosis Detectives: Im merely existing and suffering as I exist. If no one can help me, I dont think I will be around much longer.

17

Dr Michael Mosley, who presents the show, told The Sun the makers were inundated with people desperate for answers when creating the series.

He says: A lot of these people have had undiagnosed conditions for years. They have been around the houses and seen several different doctors.

You look at poor Neil and think, blimey, this has really affected his social life.

But happily, on the show Neil DOES get a diagnosis, and successful treatment, and Dr Mosley says this was life-changing for him.

17

He added: This is more emotional than many of the series I have made. There were a lot of tears.

Dr Mosley and 12 other top specialists from various different fields put their heads together to try to crack some of the most puzzling unsolved medical cases.

Their aim is to give their patients the answers they so desperately need, and have often waited years for.

Dr Mosley says: Diagnosis is at the heart of everything we are taught at medical school. You start with a persons medical history, you find out if there is any pain, where it started, and then theres a physical examination.

The reality is, for most people their condition is fairly obvious. But how many people are out there living without a diagnosis? I dont know.

The grim reality is that it is likely the hundreds who applied for the show are just the tip of the iceberg.

17

Neil, originally from Missouri, US, moved to England in the 1990s to work as a mechanic at a US Air Force base in Norfolk.

He first noticed symptoms in 2016 and military doctors put it down to an allergic reaction to a chemical in cleaning fluid.

Initially, he was given a steroid cream to treat small patches of irritation on his hands. But the rash then spread like wildfire up his arms and across his body, and he was unable to work.

He tells the show, before his diagnosis: I itch so intensely, I have scratched my pigment off. Indeed, so severe is his scratching that he is left with gaping sores and widespread infection.

17

Neil was recently found unconscious, his body consumed by sepsis a deadly immune response to an infection, where the body attacks its own tissues.

He turned to the TV specialists in the hope of finding an answer.

Consultant dermatologist Dr Sharon Wong, who leads the investigation into Neils case, says: Skin is the gateway to the rest of your body and in extreme cases some patients can die from skin disease. So it isnt a superficial problem. It goes a lot deeper than that.

Dr Wong tells viewers Neil recently had a tumour removed from his kidney, so it is possible some cancerous cells were left behind and that could be contributing to his skin problem.

17

She says there could also be an underlying blood cancer such as T-cell lymphoma, which can appear on the skin in a way that mimics eczema.

Otherwise, the rash could come down to the initial diagnosis of an allergic form of eczema, which needs to be brought under control.

Dr Wong takes three skin biopsies and sends Neil for a CT scan to rule out anything related to cancer. In the meantime, she prescribes strong steroid cream and tablets, as well as a course of antibiotics.

When Neil returns to her London clinic weeks later, his condition has improved. His skin is much smoother and the flare-ups appear to finally be under control.

17

His test results show no evidence of kidney cancer and there was nothing to point to T-cell lymphoma.

After four years, Dr Wong is able to give Neil the diagnosis he has craved he does have a severe case of eczema.

Dr Wong says: Over years, unfortunately, the hand eczema wasnt fully contained and Neil continued to get more and more eczema in other parts of the body.

"Your skin, head totoe, is one organ, so if youve got an inflammatory process like eczema happening on your leg and you dont contain it, just like a wildfire will do, it will continue to spread.

17

Given his diagnosis, and the treatment he needed, Neil has now managed to return to work.

Next up on the TV show, hoping for answers, is Katie who has been plagued by health problems since her teens.

The mum-of-threes joints crack and pop, leaving her in constant agony and just walking across a room can cause her heart rate to spike to 140 beats per minute, way above the healthy range of 60 to 100.

More recently, she started experiencing excruciating stomach pain and being sick, which caused her to lose a lot of weight very quickly.

17

Mum-of-three Katie, 35, from Lancashire, says: I lost 4st 7lb in 18 months. My appetite went down and down. I had tests done and it turned out that my stomach wasnt emptying properly.

The part-time nursing assistant had a temporary feeding tube fitted to bypass her stomach and deliver nutrients straight into her intestine.

But she continued to lose weight and still doesnt have any answers. She says: If I were to go to my GP with everything that I feel in my body, Id be there for a weeks appointment, not a ten-minute slot.

I was a dress size 12 to 14, I felt good and confident, but now Im heading towards half the person I was.

17

Im still fairly young, I have a family, I want to know what the future holds.

Examining her case, the Diagnosis Detectives tell Katie that all her different symptoms could be linked.

Dr Stephanie Barrett, a consultant rheumatologist, suggests she could have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), which affects the connective tissues and causes very flexible joints.

Dr Barrett says it could have caused a weakening of the tissues in the stomach, and caused her blood vessels to stretch, causing Katies fast heartbeat.

But this is not the only option they explore. Dr Barbara McGowan suggests Katies symptoms could also be a sign of a tumour in her adrenal glands.

She also notes that Katie had a neck op to remove one of the four parathyroid glands which regulate calcium levels when she was 17.

17

The endocrinologist specialising in hormone-related diseases explains that the combination could point to a rare genetic disorder known as multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN).

It can be life-limiting and is genetic, so could potentially put Katies children at risk.

But after blood tests rule out MEN, Dr Barrett tells Katie she has a rare form of EDS known as hypermobile EDS.

Dr Barrett adds: The painful symptoms youve been getting are to do with the tendons and muscles, which have had micro injuries over the years. So it all fits together.

17

Although happy to finally get a diagnosis, Katie says she is concerned that two of her children also have hypermobility.

The medics explain that her type of EDS does not have a gene test yet, but confirm it is hereditary.

Speaking after her appointment, Katie says: Ive seen umpteen different specialists and never really got anywhere and now I finally have an answer.

It will be a massive change for me to now be able to move forward, with just that very clear definition of what is going on.

'Failure to diagnose'

NOT all health conditions present equally, with some typically harder to diagnose.

Failure to diagnose, as it is known medically, can prove upsetting and frustrating for patients, Dr Mosley tells The Sun.

Sometimes it is just a matter of time. The way symptoms manifest can mean the condition becomes more apparent over time. What it shows is how complicated the human body really is.

If these conditions were straightforward, GPs would be able to find the answer easily, all the time.

The range of possibilities can be vast, so we doctors have to narrow them down and go down some blind allies before we can get an answer.

Almost any illness can be mis-diagnosed, but below are some common conditions that are more routinely missed.

AROUND one in every ten women in the UK is plagued by endometriosis, which takes on average seven years to diagnose.

It causes agonising periods, when the tissue that lines the womb grows outside the uterus, on the ovaries or Fallopian tubes, the charity Endometriosis UK explains.

17

It is often confused with other conditions which cause pain in the same area, such as ovarian cysts or irritable bowel syndrome.

Scans, blood tests and internal examinations are not a conclusive way to diagnose endometriosis.

The only way to be certain is with laparoscopy, which is when a thin tube with a light and a camera is inserted into the pelvis to check the tissue.

THE likes of Lady Gaga and broadcaster Kirsty Young have spoken out about their battles with fibromyalgia.

It is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body and again, due to the lack of a specific test, it can prove difficult to diagnose.

17

Symptoms can be similar to other conditions and, to get a diagnosis, certain criteria usually have to be met:

Doctors will try to rule out conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis before diagnosing fibromyalgia.

THIS is an auto-immune disease where the body attacks its own nerve cells and disrupts the communication between the brain and rest of the body.

These hacks by FSSAI will help you disinfect your kitchen easily! – Times of India

Did you know that germs can quickly get from one surface to another in the kitchen? If they get into the food or even on your skin, they can make you ill in no time. Thus, it is crucial to keep the home and kitchen surfaces disinfected to limit the possibility of infection. Coronavirus has brought the focus on hygiene, cleanliness and food safety. Many people have been sanitising all the food products that enter the kitchen to keep the surfaces germ-free. It is imperative to follow proper food safety measures to keep ourselves and our families safe from the looming threat of the virus. Therefore, it is now more important than ever to keep our homes and kitchens clean. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has released three helpful tips to sanitise home and kitchen surfaces effectively during the coronavirus. Wash Your Kitchen CountersKitchen counters can be full of germs. It is the first place where we keep the grocery bags and food products that we bring from the market. We also chop vegetables, meats and other food items on chopping boards placed over the counter, most often without washing our hands promptly after each use. Dirt and dust too easily settle on the kitchen counters. It is vital to keep your kitchen counters clean to avoid contaminating the food with disease-causing germs. As per FSSAI, you should wash the kitchen slabs and counters well with detergent and water at least once every day.

Keep Your Gas Stove CleanIf you check your gas stove after making a meal, you will find that some food particles drop and dry up over it. After a few hours, it becomes a breeding ground for disease-causing bacteria. Therefore, FSSAI advises thoroughly cleaning the gas stoves after preparing each meal. This actively reduces the risk of spreading infection and maintaining necessary cleanliness and hygiene. You can also make a paste with baking soda and water to deeply cleanse your gas stove.

Here’s How Much Weight You Can Realistically Lose In 3 Months – Yahoo Lifestyle

Photo credit: andresr - Getty Images

From Women's Health

When you're starting a new weight loss journey, it's easy for your mind to zero in on one thing: how quickly you can reach your goal weight. It's not uncommon to start doing calculations in your head, like, Can I lose this weight before that wedding that's coming up? or, How much weight can I realistically lose in three months?

But achieving any amount of weight loss in a short time span like three months requires lots of small decisions along the way, like conscious choices about what you're eating, how much exercise you want to incorporate into your week, and what you can do to effectively manage your stress, which can also affect your weight.

If you're trying to shed a few pounds in the next three months specifically (which is realistically how much time you'll need to see a big difference in your weight), here's what a registered dietitian and certified personal trainer have to say about the processand how to figure out what your goal weight should be on that timeline.

In order to experience weight loss that's sustainable, it's important to do it gradually, says Stephanie Carter, RDN. "According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), as well as many other leading experts, individuals who lose weight gradually and steadily, one to two pounds per week, will be more successful at achieving lifelong weight maintenance," she says.

That one- to two-pound weight loss per week translates to about 12 to 24 pounds over the span of three months. "This means youre aiming for four to eight pounds per month," says Dannah Eve Bollig, a trainer and creator of The DE Method. But Bollig also warns that if you're trying to shed a lot of weight, say, 50 pounds or more, it's not uncommon to lose weight at a faster pace than one to two pounds a week in the beginning of your journey, before your weight loss slows down or even plateaus for a bit. "This can be extremely frustrating and is mainly caused by a metabolism decline resulting in your body burning fewer calories than it did at its heavier weight."

Story continues

The reason you lose weight more quickly in the beginning is because you're shedding a lot of water weight. "When you consume foods in excess of your metabolic needs, your body stores this energy as glycogen, the storage form of glucose, or sugar, in the liver and muscles," says Carter. So when the body isn't getting enough energy from calories, it'll start using up the stored glycogen. "Because glycogen is bound to water, any glycogen broken down for energy will also release water. This accounts for the initial significant changes in body composition when people begin to diet," adds Carter.

In order to drop about one pound of fat, you'd need to burn about 3,500 calories. That means that, in a week, you'd need to consume 3,500 to 7,000 less calories than normal (or burn those calories) to drop one to two pounds.

There are several ways to safely achieve this calorie deficit, but how you should do it depends on a lot of lifestyle factors. "The best thing to do is take into account a person's age, weight, height, and goal, and decide on a proper and realistic plan for that individual. There is no magical solution that will work for everyone," says Bollig, who adds that losing weight is all about balance, not cutting out all less-nutritious food. But, mathematically speaking, if you were to cut out about 500 to 1,000 calories per day, youd likely lose about one to two pounds per week, she notes.

Carter says she's helped her own clients lose weight by moving them towards redefining their relationship with food, instead of encouraging calorie counting. "While it does take an energy deficit of 3,500 calories per week to lose one pound, I counsel clients to look at the composition of their meals rather than the calories they provide," she explains. "Restricting foods you love because youve labeled them as 'bad' will only lead to unhealthy behaviors such as binge eating or overeating. If you listen to your bodys natural hunger and fullness cues you very well may create an energy deficit."

But if you prefer a more structured diet plan and that works for you mentally, there are tons of options. One of the most popular options people turn to is a low-carb diet, or even the keto diet, which aims to get your body to use fat as a form of energy by minimizing your intake of carbs.

For others, a preferred method of weight management is intermittent fasting (IF). There are a variety of ways to try IF, but all of them require windows of eating and fasting periods. For example, the 16:8 diet recommends you eat all your meals within an eight-hour window. "Time restricted eating or intermittent fasting depletes your glycogen stores, which supports metabolic flexibility and insulin sensitivity," says Carter. "High insulin sensitivity allows the cells of the body to use blood glucose more effectively, reducing blood sugar and promoting weight management."

You can also try to meet a calorie deficit by keeping detailed logs of what you're eating, using something like a food diary app, and focusing on portion control. A nutrition app can also help you see eating patterns, so that you can make better-informed choices about what you decide to eat, and count calories.

Whichever way(s) you decide to lose weight, it's best to first consult a doctor to make sure that the diet or lifestyle change you want to make is appropriate for you.

Adding an exercise program to your routine can not only help you lose weight, but it can also reduce the risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services actually recommends adults get at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity exercise.

Bollig says that cardio can definitely assist in weight loss, but that it isn't necessary if you're not into it. "Its important to keep in mind that you do not need to do cardio to lose fat. You can lose fat by restricting caloric intake, and by doing other types of training like resistance training, weight training, HIIT, or a combination of all the above," she says. "The key to losing body fat is to consume fewer calories than you expend."

Strength training can also serve as a great way to aid weight loss, since the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn day to day. Bollig recommends incorporating strength training about two to three times per week to help build lean muscle mass, decrease body fat, and strengthen muscles, joints, and bones.

If you need help deciding on a fitness plan, first consult your doctor to make sure you're cleared to get active, and get familiar with these calorie-burning exercises.

Losing weight isn't just about what you're eating or how much you're exercising. Other factors like hormones and sleep can also have an impact on your metabolism.

Not getting enough sleep can throw your body out of whack. Carter recommends getting at least seven hours or more a night to make sure your diet and exercise habits have the best shot at working. "Inadequate sleep has been shown to alter glucose metabolism, decrease insulin sensitivity, and disrupt the hormones involved in regulating metabolism," says Carter. So, make sure you're getting enough Zs!

Not managing your stress levels (a.k.a. how much stress hormone, or cortisol, is flowing through your body) can also make it harder to lose weight. In fact, cortisol can cause the body to metabolize calories slower, according to a study published in the Journal of Biological Psychiatry. Keeping your stress in check by nixing the things that trigger it, or by managing your daily stress with self-care techniques, is super important for weight loss efforts to work.

Some tough exercise can up cortisol too, Carter adds, "so it's important to vary high-intensity exercise with restorative workouts such as yoga, stretching and meditation."

It's best to look at the whole picture when you're trying to lose weight, not just your diet. "Implementing sleep, meditation, and exercise with a balanced diet is the best recipe for sustainable, long-term results," says Bollig.

And don't become discouraged if you hit a plateau, which is pretty normal for anyone on a weight loss journey. It's also easy to stray away from the healthy habits you've built once you experience your initial weight loss, which you usually have to keep up in some capacity to maintain your results.

"If your weight loss does slow down, the best thing to do is stay on track, believe in yourself, work hard and talk to your doctor, nutritionist, or personal trainer about what youre feeling and reevaluate your current plan," Bollig says. "There are plenty of solutions including cutting more calories daily, increasing physical activity, changing the type of physical activity or a combination of all three." By changing up your routine a bit, you're bound to lose weightand hit that goal come three months.

How to live longer: The fermented vegetable proven to reduce risk of early death – Express

Two of the most common risk factors for heart disease are being overweight and having high cholesterol and the two are linked.

Take being overweight first. According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), being overweight can lead to fatty material building up in your arteries.

"If the arteries that carry blood to your heart get damaged and clogged, it can lead to a heart attack," the health body warns.

LDL cholesterol is one of the harmful types of fatty material because it sticks to the inside of your artery walls, thereby raising your risk of having a heart attack.

It typically contains cabbage and seasonings like sugar, salt, onions, garlic, ginger, and chili peppers.

Though usually fermented for a few days to a few weeks before serving, it can also be eaten fresh, or unfermented, immediately after preparation.

Fresh and fermented kimchi are both low in calories and may boost weight loss, research suggests.

A four-week study in 22 people with excess weight found that eating fresh or fermented kimchi helped reduce body weight, body mass index (BMI), and body fat.

Additionally, the fermented variety decreased blood sugar levels, which is significant because high blood sugar levels can also contribute to heart disease.

Keep in mind that those who ate fermented kimchi displayed significantly greater improvements in blood pressure and body fat percentage than those who ate the fresh dish.

Research has also directly indicated that kimchi may reduce your risk of heart disease.

This may be due to its anti-inflammatory properties, as recent evidence suggests that inflammation may be an underlying cause of heart disease.

In an eight-week study in mice fed a high cholesterol diet, fat levels in the blood and liver were lower in those given kimchi extract than in the control group.

In addition, the kimchi extract appeared to suppress fat growth.

This is important because the accumulation of fat in these areas may contribute to heart disease.

Meanwhile, a week-long study in 100 people found that eating 0.57.5 ounces (15210 grams) of kimchi daily significantly decreased blood sugar, total cholesterol, and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

The Good Morning Britain presenters both admitted to piling on the pounds over the past few months.

And Piers cheekily suggested they do "vigorous exercise" together to lose weight.

Piers said: "Like a lot of people in lockdown, especially when you bust your ankle up, I have put on weight.

"I am carrying too much weight. I reckon I put on at least half a stone, three quarters of a stone."

"I need to be fat-shamed to get it off."

Taking him up on his offer, Susanna jokingly shouted: "Yes, you fat person, lose the weight. It's about time, chubster."

"Wow," said a shocked Piers, who then insisted that Susanna's fat-shaming would help him shift the timber.

Disagreeing, Susanna said: "That brings me out in hives just saying that."

Piers replied: "No, that will genuinely have the right affect on me.

"I will go back today and probably eat a little less cheese and put the second bottle away and try to get back on the Peloton for the first time in a few months.

"I think we all need to be slightly shamed about weight."

Susanna argued: "No, I don't think shaming works. Sensible advice works. Throwing insults does not help people lose weight."

Piers yelled: "No, saying 'stop chunking up fatso and eating so many cakes', that works. That's what you need to be told."

When Susanna told Piers his injury had contributed to his weight gain, he said it was all about the diet.

"I could have stopped eating so much cheese in France," he said.

"I could have stopped having massive breakfasts, massive lunches and then hilarious dinners with Joan Collins, I could have stopped doing that, but I like doing it so I chunked up a bit.

"Most people I know put on a little bit in lockdown."

Doctor explains 3 ways to get rid of belly fat and reduce coronavirus death risk – Mirror Online

Now, more than ever, we need to change our eating and health habits to boost that all-important immune system.

With COVID-19 cases back on the rise, it seems only sensible that we do all we can to get fit and healthy and that means focussing on losing weight.

Frightening statistics have revealed that men are twice as likely to die from coronavirus than women, and obesity increases that risk.

COVID-19 attacks vital organs, specifically the lungs, and the more overweight you are, the lower your lung capacity. But why is it men who are worse off?

Studies have revealed that men are more likely to think they are leaner than women think they are, so might be less likely to take action when it comes to their weight, explains Dr Michael Mosley.

They take less care of their health and yet are at greater risk of things like diabetes and heart disease.

Here, Dr Mosley, creator of The Fast 800 intermittent-fasting plan, tells us how to shape up in his own words.

One of the main challenges as we age is that our metabolism slows right down. Men, on average, put on around 0.5 kg for every year between 40 and 60.

The waist to height ratio is a useful indicator of health ideally your waist circumference should be at most half of your height.

Grab a piece of string that is as long as you are tall. Fold it in half and see if it fits around your waist. If it doesnt, dont worry.

We come in all shapes and sizes, but an increased waist circumference can indicate a higher risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.

Even the slimmest of men can suffer with belly fat one of the most dangerous places to store fat.

As if this were not bad enough, fat cells deep in your abdomen also known as visceral fat are reluctant to let go of their energy stash.

To find the extra energy needed to fuel a small energy deficit, or a standard gym session, your body will look to other reserves first, like your glutes.

Fortunately, recent breakthroughs in medical and sports science have shown that it is possible to throw this gradient into reverse you can lose belly fat and you can lose it fast.

Follow the guidelines below

1) Low sugar, simple carbs and more protein

To make a serious impact on your belly fat, cutting out sugar spikes is key. When people cut carbs, their appetite goes down and they lose weight.

Not all carbs are created equal; there are good carbs and bad carbs. The trick is not to cut carbs completely, but to be choosy about the ones you regularly eat.

White bread, white pasta, potatoes and sugars, including maple syrup and agave nectar, are best eaten sparingly, if at all.

They are easily digestible carbohydrates, rapidly absorbed by the body, creating a big spike in blood-sugar levels.

Instead, eat carbs that contain lots of fibre. Fibre reduces the blood-sugar spike, provides protection against bowel cancer and feeds the good bacteria that live in your gut.

Examples include vegetables, legumes and wholegrains, such as barley, oats, buckwheat, wholegrain and rye.

Limit your intake of any food or drink containing more than 5% sugar to no more than twice a week. This includes sweet fruits like mango and pineapple, and sugary smoothies and juices.

2) Intermittent fasting

The idea that fasting slows your metabolism is a myth. When you eat fewer calories than you burn you create a calorie deficit, also called an energy deficit. You must create a calorie deficit to lose weight.

Eating 800 calories per day or less not only helps you lose weight because youre eating fewer calories, but your body responds to the stress of fasting by producing more of the hormone noradrenaline, which is known to burn fat.

Short-term fasting can lead to changes in the body that make fat-burning easier. These include reduced insulin, increased growth hormone, more adrenaline and a small boost in metabolism.

The Fast 800 diet (click HERE to find out more) combines intermittent fasting with time-restricted eating, which is very straightforward.

Simply ensure that for at least 12 hours within each 24-hour period, you do not consume any calories. Some people prefer to shorten their eating window further to 10 or eight hours.

Finally, cut down on booze. Try to follow a 5:2 pattern, taking a couple of days off drinking each week.

3) HIIT training

Exercise is key for various reasons. It is among the best things you can do for a long and healthy life.

I recommend just 10 minutes on a static bike three times a week, plus quick strengthening exercises, which dont require special equipment.

In case youve never tried HIIT (high intensity interval training), it involves a few very short bursts of exercise carried out in succession.

If you dont have an exercise bike you can try pedalling on your road bike furiously up a hill, running up the stairs, or doing short sprints when out on a run just pick up your walking pace until you are breathing hard.

The main thing is that these bursts should be brief (30 seconds maximum when it comes to the stairs or running), but hard enough to get your heart rate up.
