Readers weigh in on my attempts to (ahem) flatten the COVID curve – The Arizona Republic

I love dinosaurs - and Sedona.(Photo: Courtesy of Theresa Gotter)

When I decide to diet, I rally a couple offriends to do it with me, to sign up for Weight Watchers or swear allegiance to Atkins.

Misery loves company, after all.

This time, I went solo. (Not by choice;I started a 21-day cleanse with a guy I was dating. He dumped me on Day 19.)

I wrote about it, lamenting that Id put on a few pounds in the first couple of months of quarantine, promising to stick with this diet, even by myself.

You wrote back, congratulating me on losing almost 30 pounds, telling me about your journeys to get healthy, too, and offering advice, most of it helpful.

Brian Rea wrote he was glad I recognized the importance of sleep. (Too little sleep screws with your metabolism.)

Stephanie Taylor is down 13 pounds from eating right, power walking and yoga on Saturday mornings.

Mike Urlich wrote, As someone who has struggled most of his adult life, I am aware of how hard it is to lose weight (and harder still to keep it off). You are an inspiration to me!

Six-year-old Audie is happy to go along for the ride on the back of my float.(Photo: Courtesy of Sawyer Bland)

Ok, spill it, sister, Stephanie Small wrote. She wanted to know what cleanse I did.(I cant promote one plan over another.Google 21-day cleanse," and youll find it.)

The cleanse got me started. Im eating lean protein, vegetables and fruit and avoiding sugar. (Oh, Ben & Jerrys, how I miss you.)

Sharon Martin has put on 10 pounds since her gym closed, so shes going to try it.

I know I should do something, but I am terribly lazy when it comes to diet, she wrote. I just want to wake up thin. (Dont we all?)

I need this! Laura Meddaugh wrote. I have the Covid curves, and they have to go!

Well do it together.

P.S.: Joe Hutchinson suggested I try Ben & Jerrys Caramel Chocolate Cheesecake, swearing its delectable. Now its all I can think about.

Mum loses five stone and saves 1,400 using meal prepping hack – Mirror Online

A woman who swapped her takeaways for meal prep looks unrecognisable after losing 5st 7lbs.

Emily Forbes, 30, always struggled to control her portion sizes - a factor which she said resulted in her weight gain.

In 2018, the mum from Melbourne, Australia who weighed 16st 7lbs, discovered meal prepping.

Emily sets aside two hours every Sunday to prepare all of her meals for the week, like burrito bowls, curries, pasta bakes, veggie lasagnes and fried rice.

Once all of the meal are cooked, she pops them in the freezer so they're ready to be cooked in the oven each night.

Each meal costs around 80p to 1.60, allowing Emily to ditch her 27.50-a-week takeaway habit and save 1,430 a year.

Since adopting this method, the mum was also able to shed an impressive 5st 7lbs and four dress sizes.

She said: "The weight issues were partly due to my high carb heavy diet and lack of exercise.

"But my biggest problem by far was portion control. When you serve dinner on a dinner plate you tend to pile it on.

"My biggest motivation for wanting to lose weight was the prospect of starting a family and wanting to be healthy for my kids.

"During my weight loss journey I wanted healthy meals to take to work to I wasn't tempted by unhealthy takeaway food."

Emily continued: "My meal prepping evolved from there.

"I took inspiration from recipes and changing the quantities and some ingredients that better lent themselves to reheating."

Emily is sharing her story in the hopes that it might inspire others to give meal prepping a go.

She concluded: "My tips for starting meal prep would be to make sure you have enough containers, and cook things that reheat well."

She also shares her recipes on her blog, Meal Prep Mums Australia.

"For weight loss meal prepping start with things like frittatas and zucchini slices because they are high protein and low carb.

"You can also add different vegetables and cheeses to keep you interested by changing the flavour.

"It's only an hour or two out of your week and you'll have delicious healthy meals that you will feel so much better for eating."

Rays Tyler Glasnow hopes to keep the good times rolling in series finale – Tampa Bay Times

ST. PETERSBURG Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who starts in Sundays series finale against the Marlins at Tropicana Field, hopes to build upon the dominance he displayed in his past three outings.

Glasnow has won twice and registered a 1.93 ERA (along with 30 strikeouts and just five walks) in the 18 innings of those three starts. Overall, hes 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Glasnow set the bar high last season. Glasnow opened 6-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 46 strikeouts in his first seven games before going on the injured list with a forearm strain.

I dont know how you can improve on that,' Cash said. What hes doing now seems to fall right in line with that.'

Glasnow said he has a better approach now. To paraphrase former Rays manager Joe Maddon, Glasnow is trying easier.

What I took away (from last seasons early outings) was I put too much into the effort level,' Glasnow said. If Im going to do this for 30 starts a year, Im going to need to mellow out a bit.

The biggest difference is not trying to throw the ball 1,000 (miles per hour) every single pitch. You cant really do that for 30 starts a year. Once I realized that being relaxed and having very little tension was good, almost holding the ball lighter and trying to be more smooth, it allowed me to stay the same, if not better. My overall recovery and arm health has been much better.'

Glasnow, who has four consecutive games with eight strikeouts or more, leads the majors with 15.09 strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 25 innings pitched). Its an extremely small sample size. But for perspective, Gerrit Cole set the major-league season record (13.81 strikeouts per nine innings) last season, 13.81 strikeouts per nine innings, with the Astros.

Natural first baseman Nate Lowe, who was recalled from the alternate training site at Port Charlotte last week, started at third base Saturday. In 50 games last season with the Rays, Lowe had one start at third, but he has been working more at the position.

The more he can help us in different roles (the better),' Cash said. The (coaches in Port Charlotte) have been very complimentary of Nate and the work he put in at third base. It was part of his daily routine to get reps there. We tell our guys were not asking for anything spectacular. Just put yourself in position to make the routine play.'

Lowe said he feels more agile after dropping about 20 pounds (it had been about 35, but he has gained some back).

Losing weight never was the end goal,' Lowe said. I never said I have to lose 5 more pounds or 10 more pounds. It was about being the healthiest version of me. I played in the minors at 250, 255, and in the spring, I saw 212, 210. Thats a pretty big window, but a lot of guys have success doing it different ways. As long as I can stay on top of my sleep and diet, that puts me in a good spot to show up and compete every day.'

Saturday was Childhood Cancer Awareness Day at Tropicana Field. Rays players wore yellow ribbons on their jerseys to commemorate the occasion. Centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier, who works with the Childrens Dream Fund for kids with life-threatening illnesses, said the cause is especially meaningful.

The positivity and the mindset these kids and families have are truly incredible,' Kiermaier said. I dont think I could be that positive and happy as some of these families. Especially having a young son, I know how fortunate it is to have a healthy, functional son who lives a healthy life.

Its tough for me to find words for how powerful and emotional this is to be around these kids. They have no idea what impact they bring on my life. Im grateful I can have a small impact.'

On the strength of a 21-4 run heading into Saturday tying the best 25-game stretch in club history Kiermaier said the teams confidence remains high.

Confidence is something that I dont think the people on the outside realize how much it can do for an individual or a team,' Kiermaier said. Theres a certain confidence thats just flowing in our clubhouse, whether home or on the road. Its a true joy each day to show up and compete with these guys and see whos going to be the hero on any given night.

Were one of the best teams in baseball, and were aware of that. The greatest thing about us is were not content with that. We want to be the best team in baseball, when all is said and done. We want to be the last team standing. We want to let people know were dangerous and were not messing around.'

Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (left groin tightness) threw a successful bullpen session Friday. Hes scheduled to come off the 10-day injured list Tuesday, when he could draw a road start against the Nationals. Cash said right-handed reliever Oliver Drake (right biceps tendinitis) is progressing well but remains about a week away from active duty. After Sundays series finale, the Rays have 19 games remaining (nine at home, 10 on the road, although the Rays will be at home during one of the road' games against Baltimore, making up for the Aug. 27 postponement). The Rays also have three more off-days in September. ... At Port Charlotte, left-hander Shane McClanahan suffered a left knee hyperextension while attempting to cover first base on a ground ball. He is expected to miss about two weeks.

Kramer: Oh, the humanity! – Observer Online

True friendship propagates a certain sense of power among companions. Power to evoke an unparalleled share of our attention as we edify, incite and validate each other. Power to craft us into the best version of ourselves. Power to sculpt each others ideology and viewpoints with a degree of passion that we would never dare to brandish with anyone else.

And of course, our confidants harness the ever-treacherous temptation to get under our skin in ways that only they know best. With interpersonal knowledge comes the deep-seated license to ruffle our feathers, to agitate our firmest beliefs and insecurities on an effervescent whim. Annoyingly overzealous and effortlessly rattled conversationalist that I am, my closest circle of friends knows my ideological makeup like the back of their hands maybe I can partially blame The Observer for that. Their responsibility becomes a remarkably easy one: all it takes is a simple 21st century country music deserves wayyyy more credit or reality television destroys our morals text message for a mutual smirk to form through the phone.

The past weekend brought about a five-minute lull on my part as I carelessly thought that Id heard it all. Fittingly striking when I least expected it, a devastatingly alluring bait hooked my phone: Bill James sucks. With advanced analytics, baseball players just become assets to a business. The human aspects of the game are completely ruined.

I imagined a cackle trailing those words, not only because of my fervent discipleship of James, the pioneer of modern baseball analytics, but also because of its persistent relevance in the highly polarized clash between traditionalists and data-driven revolutionaries across major sports. Granted, reducing the near-ethereal miracle comeback, the unpredictable hot streak and the inspirational breakout story to conversations of distributions and deviations from the mean feels callous. Understandably, backlash behind statistically proven adjustments to game strategy, scouting and development heavily leans on consideration of historys control group: the generations of elite players that navigated their careers without the novelties of Statcast or extreme infield shifts.

And surely improvements in draft selections, scouting classes and on-field decisions through data insights bear benefits to the business side of baseball. With an ever-increasing body of metrics calculating the expected value of trade acquisitions and roster moves in light of upcoming game schedules, general managers and owners limit their time wasted on young projects or veteran gambles in farm systems and free agency. Player development that deliberately targets launch angle and exit velocity two metrics that can maximize offensive power at the plate yields massive surges in ticket and broadcasting revenue, capitalizing on homer-hungry fans. Pitching metrics like effective spin rate a measure of a pitchers efficiency in mechanics protect the invaluable assets of coaching staffs and executives by detecting potential causes of injuries before they occur.

But financial ploys aside, perhaps the crux of this widespread loathing for analytics in sports a distinctly human endeavor lies in our collective fear of science. We despise the thought of objective formulas and metrics overriding our years of experience watching and playing a game of metaphysical minds in motion. We cherish our imperfections in hope that we retain the autonomy to make our own decisions, however ineffective and misguided that they may be. The heart of the statistical matter beats to the rhythm of freedom, a refusal to act as data-driven pawns in a power-hungry struggle for competitive advantage.

Regardless of your stance on the forward-thinking baseball analysts that flood your television screen, however, the very nature of sports statistics protects against the very thing this argument criticizes. Take, for instance, Major League Baseball officials detection of widespread steroid use throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. The names Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa soared to household status as they shattered seemingly unbreakable single-season home run records. While the trio of bombers painted a historical sensation, the 1997 Seattle Mariners colored a masterpiece of their own by tattooing 264 baseballs in a single season. Never before did fans witness home runs so majestic, so euphoric, so pivotal since the reign of Murderers Row.

Beneath all of the glamor in the new era of baseball, the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO) perpetuated a sweeping scheme to catalyze the home run race. As later investigations confirmed, the laboratory administered supplements of human growth hormone (HGH), erythropoietin and other anabolic steroids while undetected for nearly 14 years. Investigations into the actions of BALCO began in 2002, a year after Barry Bonds attained an almost unthinkable feat: 73 home runs in 153 games played.

Basic applied statistics undoubtedly prompted the MLB to investigate. At base level, league executives and lawyers deemed the influx in long balls too significantly strayed from league averages for us to label Bonds performance as a random occurrence; chance alone does not justify his output at a reasonable level.

In this infamous case, analytics protected the humanity of Major League Baseball against the artificial development of steroids. By mining data from the performance of both past and present players, the MLB held Bonds, McGwire and Sosa to the standard of hitters greatest natural capacities and no more. Basic metrics derived an optimal level of performance under current conditions, and when enough players breached this deduction, commissioner Bud Selig administered a call for retribution.

But analytical methods are not anabolic steroids. When coaches remove their starting pitcher from the game after four strong innings, they act with the promotion of their teams refined success in mind. Chains of individual decisions and short bursts of focus define the identity of this game like no other, and certainly an agent like analytics should offer suggestions as a natural antidote for baseballs otherwise complex chaos.

Of course, more traditional choices reap rewards in many cases, and I might argue that human intuition should solely influence the dugout and bullpen as coaches evaluate the preparedness, health and energy of their players. But once the best nine assets for the job take to the field, or the spring training facility, or the off-season workout complex, analytics promote the deepest desire of friends: to help our beloved become the best version of themselves. If thats not humanizing, I dont know what is.

Above all, amidst the persistent teasing and flustering, friends lovingly uplift each other for the sake of our humanity. Maybe Bill James merits some of that love, too.

The views expressed in this column are those of the author and not necessarily those of The Observer.

Darius Leonard Just Called Out the NFL After Having To Take Multiple Drug Tests – Sportscasting

One of the best young linebackers in the NFL is Darius Leonard, the third-year star for the Indianapolis Colts. He has ultimately become one of the best players in the entire league very quickly and one of its best tacklers. Leonard, however, recently called out the NFL after taking multiple drug tests within the past month.

RELATED: Philip Rivers Reveals How He Found Out About Andrew Lucks Shocking Retirement

In college, Leonard didnt play at a big school like Ohio State, Alabama, or Clemson. He played at South Carolina State but had a lot of success there.

He ultimately earned two MEAC Defensive Player of the Year awards as he led his team in tackles in three separate seasons. Additionally, in 10 games in 2017, Leonard had 113 total tackles, eight sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble, according to South Carolina States team site.

His play led to the Indianapolis Colts selecting him in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft. He has since become an absolute star.

In his rookie season, Leonard led the NFL in total tackles with 163, and in solo tackles with 111. He also had seven sacks, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Leonard ultimately became the first player to rack up at least 125 tackles, seven sacks, and four forced fumbles in a season since Bryan Cox in 1992, according to Colts.com. This all led to Leonard earning First-Team All-Pro honors and the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

During the 2019 season, Leonard continued to become a top linebacker in the NFL. In 13 games, he racked up 121 total tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and five interceptions. His five picks led all linebackers and tied for fourth-most in the NFL. Leonard earned Pro Bowl honors that season too.

RELATED: What Has Andrew Luck Been up To in His First Full Year of Retirement?

Being a stellar linebacker, Leonard is, of course, a pretty muscular guy. Now, the NFL has apparently had him take three drug tests within the past month.

He ended up tweeting this at the league.

3 PEDs tests in one month, Leonard tweeted. Im just out here off of natural energy and athletic abilities! Cmon [NFL] Yall dont have to drug test me every week damn near.

Former Indianapolis Colts defensive back Darius Butler responded to Leonards tweet, saying, Comes w/ the territory.

Butler seems to understand that the NFL does this to players often, and over the years, there have been plenty of players to complain it.

RELATED: Former Indianapolis Colts Linebacker Edwin Jackson Tragically Died After Having a Breakout Season

Leonard is certainly not the first NFL player to complain about having to take multiple drug tests. He probably wont be the last either.

Former Colts punter Pat McAfee got drug tested after tweeting about 4/20, another time after making a big tackle, and again after a 67-yard punt.

I would have been offended if they didnt test me, McAfee said in 2016, according to ESPN. You average 59 yards a punt. If you dont get tested for that, youre kind of upset about it to be honest One time I drank Smartwater and thought I was going to fail for intelligence. Today I drank Propel (water). It was a good, smart, intelligent (sample) today.

According to CBS Sports, in 2018, safety Eric Reid returned to the field after going unsigned for the first quarter of the season. Then, after just his sixth game back on the field, he said that he had been drug tested five times since signing with the Carolina Panthers.

This is like the fifth time since Ive been here, Reid said, per CBS Sports. Theyre not going to catch me on anything.

Additionally, in 2019, running back LeVeon Bell tweeted at the NFL, also complaining about drug tests.

I done had 5 random HGH blood test in 10 weeks, Bell tweeted. [NFL] Im not doing another after today, whatever yall lookin for it obviously aint there & Im not about to keep allowing yall to stick me with those dirty a** needles. Find the players who really do that HGH BS & get off me.

It seems like that as long as there are NFL players on the field, a bunch of them will be getting randomly drug tested, and that some of those players wont be too happy about it.

How Much Weight Loss Can You Achieve In Three Months? – Women’s Health

When you're starting a new weight loss journey, it's easy for your mind to zero in on one thing: how quickly you can reach your goal weight. It's not uncommon to start doing calculations in your head, like, Can I lose this weight before that wedding that's coming up? or, How much weight can I realistically lose in three months?

But achieving any amount of weight loss in a short time span like three months requires lots of small decisions along the way, like conscious choices about what you're eating, how much exercise you want to incorporate into your week, and what you can do to effectively manage your stress, which can also affect your weight.

If you're trying to shed a few pounds in the next three months specifically (which is realistically how much time you'll need to see a big difference in your weight), here's what a registered dietitian and certified personal trainer have to say about the processand how to figure out what your goal weight should be on that timeline.

In order to experience weight loss that's sustainable, it's important to do it gradually, says Stephanie Carter, RDN. "According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), as well as many other leading experts, individuals who lose weight gradually and steadily, one to two pounds per week, will be more successful at achieving lifelong weight maintenance," she says.

That one- to two-pound weight loss per week translates to about 12 to 24 pounds over the span of three months. "This means youre aiming for four to eight pounds per month," says Dannah Eve Bollig, a trainer and creator of The DE Method. But Bollig also warns that if you're trying to shed a lot of weight, say, 50 pounds or more, it's not uncommon to lose weight at a faster pace than one to two pounds a week in the beginning of your journey, before your weight loss slows down or even plateaus for a bit. "This can be extremely frustrating and is mainly caused by a metabolism decline resulting in your body burning fewer calories than it did at its heavier weight."

The reason you lose weight more quickly in the beginning is because you're shedding a lot of water weight. "When you consume foods in excess of your metabolic needs, your body stores this energy as glycogen, the storage form of glucose, or sugar, in the liver and muscles," says Carter. So when the body isn't getting enough energy from calories, it'll start using up the stored glycogen. "Because glycogen is bound to water, any glycogen broken down for energy will also release water. This accounts for the initial significant changes in body composition when people begin to diet," adds Carter.

In order to drop about one pound of fat, you'd need to burn about 3,500 calories. That means that, in a week, you'd need to consume 3,500 to 7,000 less calories than normal (or burn those calories) to drop one to two pounds.

There are several ways to safely achieve this calorie deficit, but how you should do it depends on a lot of lifestyle factors. "The best thing to do is take into account a person's age, weight, height, and goal, and decide on a proper and realistic plan for that individual. There is no magical solution that will work for everyone," says Bollig, who adds that losing weight is all about balance, not cutting out all less-nutritious food. But, mathematically speaking, if you were to cut out about 500 to 1,000 calories per day, youd likely lose about one to two pounds per week, she notes.

Carter says she's helped her own clients lose weight by moving them towards redefining their relationship with food, instead of encouraging calorie counting. "While it does take an energy deficit of 3,500 calories per week to lose one pound, I counsel clients to look at the composition of their meals rather than the calories they provide," she explains. "Restricting foods you love because youve labeled them as 'bad' will only lead to unhealthy behaviors such as binge eating or overeating. If you listen to your bodys natural hunger and fullness cues you very well may create an energy deficit."

But if you prefer a more structured diet plan and that works for you mentally, there are tons of options. One of the most popular options people turn to is a low-carb diet, or even the keto diet, which aims to get your body to use fat as a form of energy by minimizing your intake of carbs.

For others, a preferred method of weight management is intermittent fasting (IF). There are a variety of ways to try IF, but all of them require windows of eating and fasting periods. For example, the 16:8 diet recommends you eat all your meals within an eight-hour window. "Time restricted eating or intermittent fasting depletes your glycogen stores, which supports metabolic flexibility and insulin sensitivity," says Carter. "High insulin sensitivity allows the cells of the body to use blood glucose more effectively, reducing blood sugar and promoting weight management."

You can also try to meet a calorie deficit by keeping detailed logs of what you're eating, using something like a food diary app, and focusing on portion control. A nutrition app can also help you see eating patterns, so that you can make better-informed choices about what you decide to eat, and count calories.

Whichever way(s) you decide to lose weight, it's best to first consult a doctor to make sure that the diet or lifestyle change you want to make is appropriate for you.

Adding an exercise program to your routine can not only help you lose weight, but it can also reduce the risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services actually recommends adults get at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity exercise.

Bollig says that cardio can definitely assist in weight loss, but that it isn't necessary if you're not into it. "Its important to keep in mind that you do not need to do cardio to lose fat. You can lose fat by restricting caloric intake, and by doing other types of training like resistance training, weight training, HIIT, or a combination of all the above," she says. "The key to losing body fat is to consume fewer calories than you expend."

Strength training can also serve as a great way to aid weight loss, since the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn day to day. Bollig recommends incorporating strength training about two to three times per week to help build lean muscle mass, decrease body fat, and strengthen muscles, joints, and bones.

If you need help deciding on a fitness plan, first consult your doctor to make sure you're cleared to get active, and get familiar with these calorie-burning exercises.

Losing weight isn't just about what you're eating or how much you're exercising. Other factors like hormones and sleep can also have an impact on your metabolism.

Not getting enough sleep can throw your body out of whack. Carter recommends getting at least seven hours or more a night to make sure your diet and exercise habits have the best shot at working. "Inadequate sleep has been shown to alter glucose metabolism, decrease insulin sensitivity, and disrupt the hormones involved in regulating metabolism," says Carter. So, make sure you're getting enough Zs!

Not managing your stress levels (a.k.a. how much stress hormone, or cortisol, is flowing through your body) can also make it harder to lose weight. In fact, cortisol can cause the body to metabolize calories slower, according to a study published in the Journal of Biological Psychiatry. Keeping your stress in check by nixing the things that trigger it, or by managing your daily stress with self-care techniques, is super important for weight loss efforts to work.

Some tough exercise can up cortisol too, Carter adds, "so it's important to vary high-intensity exercise with restorative workouts such as yoga, stretching and meditation."

It's best to look at the whole picture when you're trying to lose weight, not just your diet. "Implementing sleep, meditation, and exercise with a balanced diet is the best recipe for sustainable, long-term results," says Bollig.

And don't become discouraged if you hit a plateau, which is pretty normal for anyone on a weight loss journey. It's also easy to stray away from the healthy habits you've built once you experience your initial weight loss, which you usually have to keep up in some capacity to maintain your results.

"If your weight loss does slow down, the best thing to do is stay on track, believe in yourself, work hard and talk to your doctor, nutritionist, or personal trainer about what youre feeling and reevaluate your current plan," Bollig says. "There are plenty of solutions including cutting more calories daily, increasing physical activity, changing the type of physical activity or a combination of all three." By changing up your routine a bit, you're bound to lose weightand hit that goal come three months.

L+ M Hospital to host free webinars on weight-loss surgery – The Westerly Sun

NEW LONDON Lawrence + Memorial Hospital will host free webinars on bariatric weight-loss surgery. Patients 60 or more pounds overweight and concerned about developing obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or gastric reflux may be candidates for weight-loss surgery.

The webinars will be hosted by the hospitals qualified bariatric surgeons on Sept. 17, 21 and 30; Oct. 6, 15, 19 and 28; Nov. 4, 10, 18 and 23; and Dec. 3 and 16. The webinar will be available in Spanish on Sept. 8 and Dec. 8. The Sept. 17, Oct. 19 and Dec. 3 sessions will be hosted by Dr. Geoffrey Nadzam, chief of surgery at L+M.

Attendees will learn about the two surgical options available: a gastric bypass, which bypasses a portion of the stomach and re-routes food to the intestines, and a sleeve gastrectomy, in which nearly 80 percent of the stomach is removed leaving a long sleeve to restrict food intake. The minimally invasive procedures offer an opportunity for those who have struggled with morbid obesity to make behavior and lifestyle changes that can result in significant weight loss and health improvement.

A board-certified bariatric surgeon will discuss the criteria to qualify for surgery, the pros and cons of each procedure, the long-term health benefits, and the counseling and support services available to patients afterward. The surgeon will also answer questions about the team of experts in medicine, nursing, nutrition, psychology and surgery who lead the program, as well as the national accreditation that recognizes the bariatric surgery program for its safety, efficiency and commitment to quality care for the bariatric patient.

To register for the seminar, call 203-789-6237 or visit ynhh.org/services/bariatric-surgery/info-request-form.aspx.
