Falcons’ former first-round pick Takkarist McKinley says he’s motivated after fifth-year option not picked up – ESPN

Atlanta Falcons defensive end Takkarist McKinley is motivated after having his fifth-year option declined and is determined to prove his worth this season as a former 26th overall draft selection.

The Falcons, who selected McKinley in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, decided in April not to pick up the fifth-year option worth just over $10 million. In a statement, the team said it was taking a "wait-and-see approach'' in terms of any future contract with McKinley, who managed just 3.5 sacks last season and has 16.5 sacks in 45 career games.

"You can only control what you can control,'' McKinley said Saturday. "I can't talk to TD [general manager Thomas Dimitroff] and beg him, 'Hey man, accept my fifth-year option.' I can't do that. That's up to them. ... Whatever I showed in the [three] years, they decided to decline my option, which is cool. I still got another year here, still got another year to prove myself.''

Pressed on whether having his option declined is extra motivation, McKinley said, "It was a wake-up call. It was more motivation. It made me hungry, you feel me? Not saying I wasn't hungry in the past. Just got to go prove it.''

1 Related

McKinley has had issues with both shoulders and is coming back from offseason shoulder surgery. He dropped a significant amount of weight and is now at 248 pounds, down from close to 270 last season. The UCLA product spent the entire offseason in California with Laura Scott of ProSport Physical Therapy & Performance.

"Pretty much went at it Monday through Saturdays,'' McKinley said. "Pretty much all day to lose weight and get in the best shape of my life.''

Falcons coach Dan Quinn immediately noticed the difference in McKinley.

"From a rehab standpoint, he really looks rock solid,'' Quinn said. "He's dropped weight. He's strong. But I think the speed part, that was one of the things he and I discussed during the offseason. So he's lighter than he has been totally by design to make sure one of the very best parts of his game is his speed and his get-off.

"As far as the strength [of his shoulder], he really stayed disciplined to the plan as the rehab portion goes. So he's off to a good start with it. The first day of contact he wanted to see it and trust it.''

McKinley has the one year and $1,858,200 remaining on his contract before becoming a free agent. Whether he returns to the Falcons depends on how he performs in 2020. The Falcons have enhanced their pass rush with the addition of veteran Dante Fowler Jr. and rookie Marlon Davidson while cutting ties with former first-rounder Vic Beasley Jr., now with the Tennessee Titans. Pro Bowler Grady Jarrett leads the defensive line, while McKinley said Fowler already has helped tutor him on aspects such as countermoves.

McKinley tried to give some context to his performance the past three seasons.

"Obviously I wish my first three seasons could be 10-plus sacks, but that doesn't happen that way,'' he said. "Life is a roller coaster. I don't think nobody's life has always been just up. It always comes up and down. It's been very inconsistent for me, my NFL career. But that don't mean I'm about to give up. I still believe in myself. My coaches believe in me. My teammates believe in me. And my family believes in me. And I believe in myself.

"At the end of the day, I know what I can do. For me, the biggest thing is just finishing. I left a lot of sacks out there last year. This year, not trying to do the same thing.''

There have been questions about McKinley's maturity and tendency to lash out at others, particularly via social media. There also was an unexplained incident where McKinley reportedly was detained and given a mental evaluation in Los Angeles two years ago, an incident Quinn said the team took seriously because of its sensitively and possible relation to his mental health.

McKinley was asked about his maturity level.

"I'm still me, I'm not going to lie to you,'' he said. "At the end of the day, I am who I am. I'm not out at the clubs partying. I'm not in the strip clubs. I'm not doing dumb stuff. I come to work every day. I train. I work, go home, watch film, play Call of Duty, play [NBA] 2K. Wake up and do it again.

"I'm not out here doing stupid stuff.''

Gyms and fitness centers prepare to open their doors again – WGRZ.com

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said gyms can reopen as soon as Monday with 33% capacity, and they have until September 2, if they need more time.

BUFFALO, N.Y. For months, gyms and fitness centers across New York State have sat empty during the COVID pandemic, but soon, that's changing.

Todd Schifferle, the general manager at the Jewish Community Center in Getzville said, "We are just running around excited, just putting everything down, getting ready for Monday."

That's the earliest Gov. Andrew Cuomo said gyms can open their doorsagain, as long as they followstrict guidelinesfrom the state.

"If it's not done right, it can be a problem and we've seen that, so I wouldn't say exactly it's the hardest, but it is an area of concern. That's why we went slow on it," Cuomo said.

The governor also said that masks must be worn at all times and gyms must have the HVAC ventilation, similar to what malls were required to have before reopening. Also, members must sign in and out each time they attend to make it easier if contact tracing becomes necessary.

At the Jewish Community Center in Getzville, you'll notice changes right away. For example, a temperature check and survey when you walk in the door and new signage throughout the facility.

Schifferle added, "Our members are making a one-hour appointment to come in. When they come in they're gonna have hand-sanitizers available and also they're gonna have cleaning stations throughout and the after the hour we actually close the facility. Our dedicated floor staff is gonna open up and sanitize it, CDC guidelines."

Preparations are also underway at Absolute Performance, inside the Eastern Hills Mall.

"Technically, we've probably been ready for the first of July or a little before that," said Tom Corradino, the head performance coach at Absolute Performance.

Corradino said their athletes will likely notice changes in spacing and class sizes.

"Where on a given night we might have as many as 150 athletes through our doors for training, including teams. Now we'll be more towards the 30 or 40 mark total in the evening," he said.

One of the most notable guidelines from the state is that facilities are limited to 33 percent occupancy.

"We're a large facility. We have 100 pieces of cardio so we kinda did the numbers, and we should be great," Schifferle said.

Corradino added, "Each individual person will have their own individual rack, or if it's on the turf, a five-yard-space. Athletes will have their own bikes, rowers, kettlebells, barbells."

Of course, there are still challenges ahead for gyms and fitness centers and several mandates to adhere to, but the people we spoke with told 2 On Your Side they're heading in the right direction.

"Overall, from the perspective of our athletes, our coaches and our owners, we're just happy to be open and happy to be able to do what we love," Corradino said.

Schifferle added, "Smile and have fun, and welcome back."

Faithful-2-Fitness hosts health and wellness 5K run – WREX-TV

LOVES PARK (WREX) More than 150 people came out Saturday morning to the Fight Obesity 5K run or walk.

For some people, like Esmeralda Alvarado, this was the start to their fitness journey.

"This is my first ever 5K," said Alvarado.

After some encouragement from her friends, Alvarado hit the pavement, running in the 5th annual Fight Obesity run.

"This is a step forward to encourage people to get out there," said Dr.-Kim Doan Katrina, Director of Faithful-2-Fitness.

Faithful-2-Fitness is an organization focused on helping people become healthier.

"Not being able to do as much there is a higher risk of eating more, being sedentary, and not being active," said Dr. Kim-Doan Katrina.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic has hit our area, she says she has seen the rate of obesity increase.

Because the virus has cancelled many outdoor running events this year, she says cancelling her event was not an option.

"My goal was that this is the one event that we are going to do that we have to make it in-person. Even if we have 50 people! But then we had 164," said Dr. Kim-Doan Katrina.

An achievement she hopes will inspire people like Alvarado to continue to workout and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

"This is kind of opening my eyes that I should get to the gym," said Alvarado.

Savannah McCaskills offseason commitment to her fitness opens up a new level of play for the young forward – Chicago Sun-Times

Red Stars forward Savannah McCaskill finished the 2019 NWSL season with a sour taste in her mouth.

The Red Stars 4-0 loss to the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL Championship was far from the teams expectations, and for McCaskill, the entire match felt like a blur.

I never showed myself for a single moment in that game, McCaskill said. I let the game be bigger than me, and I let the moments pass me by.

The hangover from that match is all McCaskill had heading into the offseason, and it sparked a desire in her to refocus and reshape her game.

McCaskill was traded to the Red Stars midway through the 2019 season, and her main goal when she joined the team was meeting the expectations of her new head coach, Rory Dames.

Dames wanted his new forward to make up for an offensive lapse the Red Stars were experiencing with their national team players competing in the World Cup. The young forward fell short, with only one goal in 18 games.

Looking back, I didnt do a great job of [coming in and making an immediate impact], McCaskill said. Which is another reason I wanted to come into this season and really help contribute.

The 2019 season concluded the last week of October, and by early November, McCaskill was in Metuchen, New Jersey, training at AP2T, a gym focused on soccer-specific training.

McCaskill wanted to restructure the way she approached her fitness.

Up until that point, McCaskill said she was able to get away with her lack of physical fitness because of her technical skills and ability to see the game. She realized to become the player she wanted to be, thats what needed to change.

From November until the end of February, McCaskill was working out between five and six days a week. She spent four days in the gym at AP2T, rotating between speed and strength training with Mike Olim and technical skill work with Matt Nigro. On the fifth day, McCaskill was playing pickup with the other professionals training at the gym. The sixth day of the week was dedicated to hot yoga, and on the seventh, McCaskill would relax and recover.

We had a really great group of NWSL players training there but also USL and MLS guys, McCaskill said. You showed up every day, and you definitely didnt want to get outworked.

McCaskill returned to Chicago ready to show her growth as a player, but after a week of training, she was back in her home state of South Carolina because of the coronavirus pandemic.

She kept up with her fitness in the offseason by running on her parents treadmill and lifting. By the time the team returned to training and the NWSL Challenge Cup rolled around, everyone saw a whole new player.

One highlight during the Challenge Cup where McCaskill proved her value to the Red Stars countless times was the full 90 minutes she played against the Portland Thorns.

Her coaches back in New Jersey were watching from the facility.

Her investment in the offseason paid off, Nigro said.

The Red Stars will resume group training on Monday, McCaskill said, after players return negative COVID-19 tests.

McCaskills goals have changed slightly.

Going forward, I want to continue to stamp myself onto games, McCaskill said. Whether that be getting on the ball or playing more through balls. Now that a focus on my fitness is underway, I think the more that I can do to show myself in games is going to be my next goal.

Around Town: JCC adjusts to pandemic by taking fitness equipment outdoors – Palo Alto Online

Fitness equipment from the Goldman Sports and Wellness Complex at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto is now set up outdoors. Courtesy Oshman Family JCC.

In the latest Around Town column, news about how the COVID-19 pandemic has led the Oshman Family JCC to readapt its fitness center, a local mosque to rethink an annual celebration and a five-star hotel to offer a "dream" giveaway.

COMMITTED TO FITNESS ... Restaurants aren't the only establishments that have brought their services outdoors during COVID-19. Gyms have recently joined the trend by bringing their exercise equipment out in the open, including the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center. Ellipticals, treadmills, rowing machines and other equipment from the center's Goldman Sports and Wellness Complex are set up outside and available for members' use. The JCC also has set up a strength-training area under a shade that includes weights and lifting stations. "We have offered outdoor workouts and classes before; however, the 'outdoor gym' we have set up this time we have not done anything like this before," Todd Milton, the complex's director, said in an Aug. 13 press release. JCC staff are following guidance from the state and Santa Clara County by keeping physical distance between members and maintaining cleaning practices throughout the south Palo Alto campus in response to the health crisis. Procedures also have been changed at the JCC's Bill Heller Outdoor Pool to comply with health guidelines. The center has plans to bring back group exercise sessions at Freidenrich Community Park followed by interval, zumba and cycling classes.

QUIET REFLECTION ... Religious groups have had to dramatically readapt their traditions since the coronavirus pandemic hit and the Dawoodi Bohras of San Jose is no exception. The group, which during regular times meets at its mosque in south Palo Alto, has adjusted its practices for 'Ashara Mubraka, which translates to Blessed 10, a 10-day period of reflection that began on Aug. 19 and kicks off the Islamic New Year. The changes are a dramatic departure from normal customs for the roughly 150-family congregation that practices Shia Islam and is mainly composed of members scattered across the south bay. What is usually a solemn gathering for the believers who remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, will instead take place at their respective homes. "It is a period of gaining education and spiritual reflection," said Zoaib Rangwala, who has been involved with the local Dawoodi Bohras group since its founding in 2000. For two hours and 15 minutes each day, they will watch recorded sermons by the current leader of the community, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, and the past two leaders. During normal times, the congregation would have gathered for sermons and two meals cooked by members of the mosque daily over the 10-day period; the congregation fasts on Ashura, the 10th day, from sunrise to sunset. This year, some members of the local community will prepare the food ahead of time at the mosque's commercial kitchen, then distribute the meals to around a dozen pickup sites between San Francisco and Gilroy. The group also has offered a helping hand to the community during the pandemic in recent months, including donating roughly 200 hand-sewn face masks to East Palo Alto residents and seniors at the Palo Alto Gardens apartment complex and delivering a pizza lunch to Palo Alto police officers.

A HERO'S REWARD ... The Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley plans to pull out all the stops for one special essential worker through a "dream celebration." The East Palo Alto hotel is accepting nominations for a community hero who will be treated to a special event, such as a milestone birthday, wedding, graduation party or other occasion, worth $50,000 with the help of its staff and partner companies. "We are empowering people to nominate (or self-nominate) a community hero who we could provide a fully specialized intimate event," General Manager Florian Riedel said in a statement. "It could be your friend who has been delivering food to elderly; a neighbor who spearheaded home schooling for local kids; a first responder; or someone you know who is making (a) positive impact and who has put themselves above others during this difficult time." The event will take place before Dec. 31, 2021, on a date agreed on by the hotel and the winner, pending local health orders. Along with the venue, the winner also will receive a customized menu by Executive Chef Martn Morelli, entertainment, flowers and photography and videography services. Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 15 at woobox.com/2strop.

O2 Fitness undecided about planned Saturday reopening – Greater Wilmington Business Journal

As of late afternoon Friday, O2 Fitness officials were still uncertain whether they would proceed with plans to reopen their facilities in North Carolina on Saturday. Those plans faced headwinds from the N.C. Dept. of Health and Human Services that blew in earlier Friday.

The gym chain, which has four locations in Wilmington in addition to others in the Triangle and the Triad, closed all its facilities in March. Early Friday, it announced that its North Carolina gym clubs would reopen Saturday; after hearing from NCDHHS later in the day, officials were unsure whether to proceed on that path. But its Facebook posts still reflected plans to make its indoor facilities available to members.

Fitness facilities may offer outdoor classes and outdoor exercise equipment during Phase 2 restrictions as long as they comply with the outdoor mass gathering limit of 25 people, said NCDHHS spokeswoman Catie Armstrong in an email Friday afternoon. O2 Fitness has been conducting outdoor and live-streamed activities.

Indoor activity, however, is a different story, Armstrong said.

"Fitness facilities, gyms and exercise facilities in North Carolina are permitted to operate indoors for those who have a prescription from a medical professional or health care provider," she wrote. "To the extent that indoor or outdoor areas in gyms, exercise facilities, or fitness facilities are utilized for the limited purpose of serving those with a medical condition, they must follow the NCDHHS Interim Guidance for Fitness Center and Gym Settings."So, despite the measures for mask-wearing, sanitizing and maintaining physical and social distancing the fitness chain stated it was taking to protect members and staff, those measures apparently did not satisfy the state agency, since O2 Fitness did not indicate it was limiting its clientele to those members with medical conditions requiring exercise.O2 Fitness officials noted that some other gyms in the area reopened earlier this summer through the technicality mentioned by Armstrong. That exception -- serving members with a medical condition for which exercise is prescribed -- was outlined in a June 5 letter from N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein. Information on the state's easing of various Phase 2 restrictions, including those for gyms, can be found here.Although the letter said that individuals exercising because of medical directives must provide documentation from a medical professional, gym owners are citing the Americans with Disabilities Act and other privacy legislation as reasons that individuals need not provide such documentation.O2 Fitness facilities are located in Hanover Center, Mayfaire, on Racine Drive and in the Porters Neck area.
