How to Get Rid of Love Handles – How Men Can Lose Weight Safely – Men’s Health
WHEN YOU THINK about a lovers touch, your brain might jump to a pair of hands lingering around the hipswhich explains the origin of the term "love handles." Its a cute nickname, but youd probably describe the love handles themselves as anything but "cute."
The term has become associated with the unwanted fat that sits on top of your hip bones. Some people don't mind the extra poundagemore to grab onto, as the saying goes. For others, housing extra fat in this area might make you a bit uneasynot to mention uncomfortable if you often wear dress pants or jeans.
If youre looking to nix those pesky bundles of fat that lie atop of your hips, that's okay. If losing your love handles is what will help boost your confidence and make you a healthier, happier version of yourself, you do you. Know, too, that youre not alone in feeling this way. While fat distribution is inherently genetic, its common for men to gain weight along their midriff. Many men are concerned about how to lose weight in their midsection. I let them know that their body has an android distribution, or male-like, weight distribution, says Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., M.P.H., obesity medicine physician and Men's Health advisor.
While theres no way to lose fat only from your midsection without medical intervention, there are several ways to bring down your overall body fat which will pull from all areas. Its going to take a bit more than just adding in an ab routine to your workout plan, though. Here's how.
Love handles are what most people commonly call the bundle of subcutaneous fat that lies just above your pant line, sitting directly under the skin. Thats actually good news, because it means its not the dangerous kind of fat, called
Even though our bodies have good intentions when collecting these love handles, it doesnt mean theyre impossible to lose. But it will involve a solid calorie deficit and some effort in the gym.
There are a few shortcuts you can take, but they're extreme, and not something that we'd generally recommend. Liposuction is one of these options. More recently, men have turned to non-invasive treatments, the most popular of which feature either freezing or heating the stubborn fatty areas off the body. These treatments are expensive and might be a bridge too far, unless you're really desperate.
Besides, by cutting corners, you'll miss out on the fitness gains you'd make along the way using other methods, which will hopefully become a reason you're training, regardless of the aesthetic payoff. If getting rid of love handles without special treatments is your goal, you'll have to work hardbut you'll have to work smart, too.
One method that is not smart and won't work is spot reduction. The theory is that if you focus all of your attention on one specific area in your training (for instance, doing hundreds of crunches for you midsection), you'll be able to burn off the fat in just that area. But that's not how your body works. What you can do is lose fat more generally, then build up muscle where you might not have had it beforebut for that to work, you'll have to do that smart, hard work.
Here's a plan to ditch your stubborn love handles from former Men's Health fitness advisor Craig Ballantyne, C.S.C.S.
Studies have shown that interval-based exercise programs, most specifically high intensity interval training (HIIT), are more effective for burning off your love handles than steady state cardio. Instead of running for miles on end without any clear goal, fine tune your work and rest periods to strip away the fat.
So what type of interval program should you use? You can use a jump rope, or apply the principles to running or weight room work. Ballantyne recommends this setup to banish that pesky midsection fat:
After a thorough warmup, alternate between 20 seconds of hard exercise and 40 seconds recovery. Repeat that pattern 6 to 8 times. Afterwards, finish with 5 to 10 minutes of cooldown exercise.
If you have extra time, do 10 minutes of regular cardio pace.
Jogging can only do so much.
Even though Ballantyne recommended cardio for a cool down, he's wary of its effectiveness when performed alone. Extended periods of steady state cardio, like jogging, wont do much to cut down your spare tire. "It's not going to work as well as interval training," Ballantyne said.
This is related to another issue, according to Ballantyne: Many guys don't have enough muscle in the first place. Losing love handles, like bodybuilding, is a game of illusion. Muscle on your chest and back can essentially "hide" excess fat in your love handle area.
"So most guys are skinny-fat, and then try to lose love handles with cardio only, and basically become even smaller versions of themselvesbut still skinny-fat," Ballantyne said. "It's better to use intervals and weight training to gain muscle and lose fat at the same timewhich IS possibleand change your body's overall appearance."
"Ab exercises like crunches are generally a waste of time," Ballantyne said. The problem is, youre only working the muscles around your lower spine with crunches and situps.
Instead, you should build up your core with moves that focus on spinal stability, like planks and hollow body holds. Check out this quick video about the way your core muscles function for an idea of what you should be aiming for:
Want a smarter core workout in general? Check out Epic Abs, the program from MH fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. that inspired this video.
While you're cutting down your midsection, do yourself a solid and work on some other areas of your body that can take attention away from your ample hips. Build up your pecs, lats, deltoids, and traps to create the illusion of smaller love handles.
"Most guys don't have enough muscle to focus on just losing weight," Ballantyne said, "so every guy must build some muscle in these areas."
How can you build the muscle and lose fat at the same time? You're hoping to "culk," so you should start by training hard, eating properly, and sticking to a consistent program.
Ballantyne also recommended a plan based around two to three total body workouts per week. Use five exercises per workout (one lower body, one upper push, one lower body single leg, one upper pulling, one total body ab exercise). Do that as a circuit three times through, with eight to 12 reps per exercise. Finish with interval training.
You can't neglect nutrition if you're looking to lose fat. Luckily, there are easy eating hacks you can incorporate into your daily routine to cut calories while still enjoying yourself and staying satisfied. Eliminating foods you love is an unsustainable way to live. "Negotiate with yourself on what you are willing to do without or do with less of," says Leslie Bonci, R.D., sports dietitian for Kansas City Chiefs.
Prioritize and optimize protein, fiber, healthy fats, and produce to fill up. Protein and fiber help you stay fuller, longerwhich may reduce snacking in between meals. When choosing grains, pick the higher fiber choices like quinoa, oatmeal, and whole wheat pastas. Incorporate more beans into your salads, soups, and even blend and add to sauces. Include a fruit or a veggie at every occasion.
When it comes to snacking, focus on foods that will make you chew longer and eat slower, like jerky or apples. Bean dips with veggies are also a quick and easy snack that will load up the fiber and protein with little calories.
To really find a custom nutrition plan that will work best with your body, talk to a registered dietitian.
We dont need to tell you that losing weight is no walk in the park. Accomplishing your goals will take a balance of overhauled nutrition, exercise, and recovery practices to complete the equation and finally shed some of those pounds. You might find it tough to do any of those things on your own.
Working with a professional can help provide some much needed accountability and guidance. Doctors who specialize in weight loss, nutritionists, dietitians, and personal trainers can all help you get to where you want to be. They can tailor your workouts and meal plans to better match your genetic makeup and goals. Dont be afraid to ask for help if the task feels daunting.
Sorry to break it to youdoing loads of side bends and Russian twists wont melt away your love handles. Its impossible to lose fat on one portion of your body by exercising the muscles in that area. The concept is called spot training, or spot reductionand it doesnt work.
What does work is incorporating high-velocity compound movements into your workouts. Compound movements are exercises that require multiple muscle groups working together. These kinds of moves will burn a lot of calories, aiding in creating the calorie deficit you need to burn fat all over. Here are 6 of our favorites.
This move lights up your body head to toe, and ramps up your heart rate in the process. Not only will med ball slams aid in the fat loss process, but theyll help you take a little aggression out on your worst days.

New Weight Loss Drugs Show Promise in Reducing Opioid Cravings – Gizmodo
Medications used to treat diabetes and obesity may also show promise in reducing opioid cravings, recently released research suggests. The small study found that people with opioid use disorder who took the GLP-1 drug liraglutide reported noticeably fewer cravings afterward. The findings are the latest to indicate that GLP-1 drugs can help control addictive behaviors, but much more data will be needed to confirm their effectiveness.
What Drew Noomi Rapace to Constellation?
The research was presented this weekend at the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences annual conference. It involved 20 people diagnosed with opioid use disorder who were receiving in-patient care at the Caron Treatment Center in Wernersville, Pennsylvania. Some of the patients received liraglutide, either alone or in combination with buprenorphine, an approved treatment for opioid use disorder, and then were tracked for the next three weeks.
During that time period, people taking liraglutide reported 30% fewer cravings than those who took a placebo, and those taking buprenorphine at the same time were also more likely to report experiencing no cravings at all. Side-effects were similar between the two groups, though those on liraglutide did experience more gastrointestinal symptoms.
The findings are based on a very small sample size, so should be viewed with added caution. But they line up with other recent reports suggesting that GLP-1 medications can help treat substance use disorders. Last November, for instance, researchers found that people taking semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic) who also had alcohol use disorder experienced a clear reduction in their alcohol-related symptoms afterward, including cravings.
Liraglutide, semaglutide, and similar drugs mimic and effectively boost levels of GLP-1, a natural hormone that helps regulate our insulin production and appetite, among other things (liraglutide is the older of the two drugs and has shown modest weight loss effects). The cells that respond to GLP-1 are primarily found in the gut, but there are also GLP-1 related cells in the brain. Theyre thought to tamp down appetite not only by physically affecting the digestive tract but by interacting with these brain cells as well. And thats led to speculation that these drugs could reduce peoples other unhealthy cravings.
Right now, the evidence supporting this potential benefit is little more than anecdotal. But there are already randomized, controlled clinical trials underway testing semaglutide for alcohol dependence. And the authors behind this latest study say theyre also planning a trial of 200 people that will study whether semaglutide can improve outcomes for people already taking methadone or buprenorphine to manage their opioid addiction.
With one person dying every five minutes and people dying around the world due to opioid exposure, we feel a sense of urgency, study author Patricia Grigson, director of the Penn State Addiction Center for Translation, told STAT News. I feel very hopeful; there may be a new treatment for opioid use disorder.

1000-Lb Sisters: Amy’s "Lady In Red" Look & Other Post-Weight Loss Fashion Wins (She’s Got A New Boyfriend) – Screen Rant
Summary
1000-lb Sisters star Amy Slaton once weighed more than 400 pounds, but she has undergone a remarkable weight-loss transformation and is expressing herself through fashion. Amy began her weight loss and fitness journey during the first season of the series. Despite encountering emotional and physical challenges, Amy successfully navigated her path and received approval for gastric bypass surgery in 2019 by following her doctor's prescribed diet and exercise regimen.
By 1000-lb Sisters season 3, Amy achieved further progress, shedding an additional 136 pounds. Amy's substantial weight loss brought her latest weigh-in to 275 pounds. At her former size, it was difficult for Amy to find fashionable clothing, but now that she's at a smaller size, she has many more fashion options. Since losing all the weight and divorcing her husband, Michael Halterman, Amy has been exploring her style and posting photos to prove it.
In January 2024, Amy took to Instagram to post a series of photos of herself dressed in red, posing outside in the snow. In the photos, the slimmed-down 1000-lb Sisters star was sporting long blue hair pulled back from her face, a wine-red body-conscious mini dress, a red coat and black knee-high slouch high-heel boots. In each photo, she was posing, smiling and having a great time showing off her slimmed down body and fun new style. Since losing so much weight, Amy has a newfound confidence, and she is eager to express herself through her fashion choices.
In another set of Instagram photos, Amy rocked a dark goth look, donning black pants and a black top with a cold shoulder element boldly baring some skin. Her shock of long blue hair was tied back and was in sharp contrast to the all-black look. In one of the photos, the 1000-lb Sisters star was wearing the same red coat that she wore in her aforementioned all-red look over her black outfit, and a bold pair of black and white high-top sneakers.
Amy posed alongside a mystery blonde woman and her sister, Tammy Slaton, who has also lost a substantial amount of weight and is experimenting with fashion. In the photos, Tammy wore an interesting, slightly off-the-shoulder dress with camouflage elements. The sisters have both made extraordinary progress on their weight-loss journeys and deserve to show it off. It wasn't long ago that Tammy weighed 700 pounds and was trapped in her home like a prisoner. Both sisters have come so far, and it's inspirational to see.
Amy wore an off-the-shoulder sequined mermaid costume for Halloween that bared one of her shoulders. The 1000-lb Sisters star tied her blue hair back in a thick braid and wore dramatic purple eye makeup and face stickers to complete the look. Many of the comments celebrated her slimmed-down looks, congratulated her on her newfound independence, and complimented her glittering mermaid costume. But many of the comments also criticized her for her obvious use of a blatant photo filter, arguing that she should be honest with her fans about what she really looks like.
In a promo photo for 1000-lb Sisters season 5, Amy posed back-to-back with Tammy, seated on the stairs, wearing jeans, tattoo-baring ankle boots, and a pink leather motorcycle jacket. In this photo, Amy rocked purple hair, because she has always enjoyed experimenting with her hair color. Both Amy and Tammy exude confidence in the promo photo and look very different than they did when the series first premiered in 2020.
Amy's life has changed completely over the course of the last few years. She has divorced her husband Michael and has been dating her new boyfriend, Tony Rodgers, for several months. Losing weight through diet, exercise, and surgery has completely changed Amy's life and given her a new sense of confidence and self-worth. Though she has been struggling with mental health issues, she is working hard at healing and moving forward.
Amy has expanded her style by adding designer pieces like a Gucci leather tote with a gold chain handle. The fact that the 1000-lb Sisters star is willing to invest in herself enough to splurge on an expensive designer bag is indicative of the fact that she values herself more than she used to. In the photo, Amy wore all black, and her purple wind-swept bob was pulled back from her smiling face. Capping off the look was a glamorous pair of cat-eye sunglasses.
Whether rocking a designer label, a mermaid costume, or a goth look, Amy is clearly living her best life since losing weight. She's making up for lost time and experimenting with fashion trends to explore her style. Losing weight gave her the confidence to leave Michael and be a single mother to Gage and Glenn Halterman. It has also opened up a world of possibilities that the 1000-lb Sisters star wouldn't have had access to when she weighed over 400 pounds.
1000-lb Sisters airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on TLC.

1000-lb Sisters follows sisters Amy Salton-Halterman and Tammy Slaton in their home in Dixon, Kentucky, covering their daily lives, weight loss attempts, and subsequent weight loss surgery. The show covers such moments as attempts to have children, medical visits, and dramatic emergency room visitations. The family wrestles with supporting their daughters and their weight loss efforts while struggling with their own life troubles.

"The people who hate on it the most are the people who are secretly doing it or pissed off that they can't afford it," Kelly, 39, told E! Online. Unfortunately, right now it's something that is very expensive but it eventually won't be because it actually works."
However, the Osbournes matriarch, 71, recently said that you have to keep this stuff away from younger people after sharing that shed lost too much weight on the popular diabetes drug.

I didnt want to go this thin, The Talk UK host said. It just happened.
Ozempic is an FDA-approved prescription medication for people with type 2 diabetes. It's one of the brand names for semaglutide also known as Wegovy which works in the brain to impact satiety, and is the latest weight loss trend.
Kelly, who had gestational diabetes while pregnant with son Sidney, now 14 months, defended the medication, saying, "People hate on it because they want to do it."
There are a million ways to lose weight, why not do it through something that's isn't as boring as working out?"

Kelly didnt say whether shes taken the drug, but she has perviously shared with fans details of her 85-lb. weight loss due to gastric sleeve surgery.
I had surgery; I dont give a f--- what anyone has to say, Osbourne told hosts Dax Holt and Adam Glyn on their Hollywood Raw podcast, in response to rumors about plastic surgery. I will never ever ever lie about it ever. It is the best thing I have ever done.
But mom Sharon isnt holding back from criticizing popular weight-loss methods; She recently told The Guardian that swearing off Ozempic and surgery has allowed her to finally be happy with her appearance.
Im through with the weight loss and all that cosmetic stuff, she told the outlet. I was injecting myself with Ozempic and I lost three stone [about 42 lbs.] in four months. Too much. I now weigh seven stone [98 lbs.] and cant put on weight.
Im shaping up fine," she said. Ive finally become more accepting of my body, my looks.

Transform Your Weight Loss Journey: Scientists Uncover the Surprising Power of Self-Compassion – SciTechDaily
A study shows that self-compassion helps individuals manage setbacks in weight loss by improving mood and self-control, suggesting its an effective strategy for achieving and maintaining weight loss goals.
Weight loss presents a significant challenge, primarily due to the easy availability of tempting, high-calorie foods. Even with strong resolve, its easy to find oneself indulging more than intended. Such slip-ups can lead to feelings of frustration and discouragement, causing many to give up on their objectives.
A new study from the Center for Weight, Eating and Lifestyle Sciences (WELL Center) in Drexel Universitys College of Arts and Sciences explored whether practicing self-compassion or treating oneself with the same care and kindness that people typically offer to their loved ones helps people become more resilient to these overeating setbacks.
Recently published in Appetite, researchers found that when study participants had more self-compassionate responses to their lapse, they reported better mood and self-control over their eating and exercise behavior in the hours following the lapse. The findings suggest that self-compassion can help people engage in healthier weight loss behavior by helping them become less demoralized by setbacks.
Many people worry that self-compassion will cause complacency and lead them to settle for inadequacy, but this study is a great example of how self-compassion can help people be more successful in meeting their goals, said Charlotte Hagerman, Ph.D., an assistant research professor in the College and lead author. The road to achieving difficult goalsespecially weight lossis paved with setbacks. Practicing self-compassion helps people cope with self-defeating thoughts and feelings in response to setbacks, so that they are less debilitated by them. In turn, they can more quickly resume pursuing their goals.
Hagerman and colleagues collected data from a group of 140 participants who were trying to lose weight through a group-based lifestyle modification program. Participants responded to surveys on their smartphones multiple times a day to report whether they had experienced a dietary lapse eating more than they intended, a food they didnt intend, or at a time they didnt intend and the extent to which they were responding to that lapse with self-compassion. The researchers also asked about participants moods and how well they had been able to practice self-control over their eating and exercise behavior since the last survey they responded to.
Hagerman noted that weight loss and maintenance are extremely difficult, and people typically blame themselves for a lack of willpower.
In reality, we live in a food environment that has set everyone up to fail. Practicing self-compassion rather than self-criticism is a key strategy for fostering resilience during the difficult process of weight loss, said Hagerman. The next time you feel the urge to criticize yourself for your eating behavior, instead try speaking to yourself with the kindness that you would speak to a friend or loved one.
For example, instead of a person saying to his or herself, You have no willpower, reframe it to a kinder and truer statement: Youre trying your best in a world that makes it very difficult to lose weight. Hagerman added that this isnt letting yourself off the hook but giving yourself grace to move forward in a highly challenging process.
The research team hopes this will lead to more effective interventions that teach people how to practice self-compassion in the moments that they experience setbacks, such as overeating or weight gain. They also hope to study the best strategies to teach people how to practice true self-compassion, reducing self-blame and criticism, while also holding themselves accountable to their personal standards and goals.
It can be easy for the message of self-compassion to get muddied, such that people practice total self-forgiveness and dismiss the goals they set for themselves, said Hagerman. But weve shown that self-compassion and accountability can work together.
