Keep Moving Safely with Duke Recreation | Duke Today – Duke Today

At 5:15 p.m., Christine Moorman and her husband Ed Holub leave their home office areas, change into exercise clothes, unravel exercise mats in their living room and pull up a live virtual fitness class offered by Duke Recreation & Physical Education.

They pick from their favorite offerings: Pilates, kickboxing, high-intensity interval training.

Both of us sit for most of the day, so the classes are our signal that its the end of the workday and time to start moving, said Moorman, the T. Austin Finch Sr. Professor of Business Administration at the Duke Fuqua School of Business. The classes are our way to decompress together. Got Questions?

Find up-to date information about Duke Recreation & Physical Education facilities, memberships and services online.

North Carolina is in Phase 2 of its reopening plan until at least Sept. 11, which keeps gyms and fitness centers closed, but Duke Recreation & Physical Education has found alternate ways to keep staff, faculty and students healthy and moving safely.

At Duke, the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion will be open for limited hours to some Duke Recreation & Physical Education members, and you can still rent outdoor equipment. Duke Rec has created virtual fitness offerings and is offering a new digital membership, as well as limited in-person, outdoor programs that are on-site, like outdoor group fitness classes, to keep community members active while adhering to public health measures such as masking and physical distancing.

For us, its about providing healthy opportunities that are safe and accessible, said Felicia Tittle, executive director of Duke Recreation & Physical Education andphysical activity and movementco-convener forHealthy Duke. The overall health of our community is so vital. You cant have people be their best selves without resources for their physical and emotional well-being.

Here are some membership updates:

Since Wilson and Brodie closed in March, Duke Rec has provided reoccurring group fitness classes, at-home video workouts and weekly blog posts about recreational resources. Duke Rec & P.E.'s social media accounts also highlight at-home workout tips and ideas for staying active. Individuals can stay connected to the Duke Community beyond the gym through apps such asStrava.

For all of us, it was about the community and the connection, said Leigh Ann Garstecki, director of fitness and wellness for Duke Recreation & Physical Education. People are logging onto our classes because they want to be connected to the people they know.

The relationship with fitness instructors has kept Moorman and her husband participating in virtual exercise classes almost every day since March. The couple has been a member of Duke Recreation & Physical Education for five years and will continue with a virtual membership.

Overall, they are just world-class instructors, Moorman said. They are so enthusiastic and give a lot of exercise adaptions. We look forward to seeing them and we can tell they care about helping us. Its a little corny, but theyve become part of our daily life during the pandemic.

For an extensive FAQ on re-opening and offerings, visit the Duke Recreation & Physical Education website.

Help share the proactive and extensive work being done by all Duke community members during the COVID-19 outbreak. Send ideas, shout-outs and photographsby clicking hereor writeworking@duke.edu.

Battle of the virtual conventions: How the GOP team is studying the Democrats show – POLITICO

Part of our message will focus on how the suburbs are becoming unsafe because inner cities are unsafe, and Biden and Kamala are going to make it even worse. People who have been impacted by the lawlessness will speak, said the outside Trump adviser.

Trump himself has also pushed to be featured more prominently in the Republican convention, alongside other party figures including Vice President Mike Pence, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Sens. Tom Cotton (Ark.), Tim Scott (S.C.) and Joni Ernst (Iowa), among other speakers.

Two Republicans close to the campaign said the president plans to have a presence each of the four days of the convention, either by video or through an appearance by one of his family members. Trumps wife Melania and eldest son Don Jr. are both expected to speak. Even Michael Flynn, Trumps former national security adviser, whose stature as a MAGA star grew exponentially after he was ensnared in the Russia investigation, had been considered to speak at the convention next week, according to three people familiar with the situation, though he was ultimately passed over for other names.

Democrats do not seem worried about the last-word advantage GOP officials believe they have, in part because of differences in their production resources. The format of the Republican National Convention went through numerous iterations before Trump finally announced at the end of July that he was canceling the most prominent physical portions altogether, leaving campaign aides and officials involved in planning the convention scrambling as they worked to assemble a virtual convention in one month.

Weve got all the Hollywood people on our side so we get all the best advice, boasted Daughtry.

As for Republicans making potential changes to their speaking roster and programming based on the Democrats convention, Daughtry said its nothing new: Anytime we go first, they are always in a scramble to adjust their convention.

Other Democrats involved in the partys convention said they were especially proud of how their program has so far weaved in accounts from ordinary people along with bold-faced names. That process began on June 29 when the party realized that in-person convening would be difficult, if not impossible, in the age of Covid-19.

As a result, they set up a portal inviting people to submit their own stories and videos and then selected certain entries to insert throughout the televised program each evening. The crowdsourcing attempt brought in over 1,000 submissions, according to convention spokesperson Ofirah Yheskel.

Its what the internet is all about, or at least what the internet should all be about, said Lindsay Holst, a senior adviser for special projects at the convention. The real opportunity of the internet is connecting with people beyond your own lived experiences.

Trumps team believes the combination of their own stories from ordinary voters, combined with the elegance of the White House as a backdrop, will make their own convention feel more energetic and organized than the Democrats program despite the restrictions Covid-19 has imposed on both parties.

The RNC filed a permit earlier this week to launch fireworks from the Washington Monument as soon as the president finishes his acceptance speech at the White House, another flashy move aimed at capturing viewers attention. Tim Murtaugh, communications director for the Trump campaign, said the studio from which Longoria Bastn hosted the convention on Monday night made the program feel indistinguishable from a regular CNN segment at times.

But they are also borrowing ideas from the Democrats convention playbook. After several Republicans spoke in favor of Biden during the DNC on Monday they included Kasich, the former Ohio governor, former California GOP Senate candidate Meg Whitman, former Rep. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.) and former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman Trump campaign officials confirmed that they, too, will focus part of their programming on bipartisan support for the president. According to two officials familiar with the planning, Georgia Democratic Rep. Vernon Jones, who announced his support for Trumps reelection earlier this year, will make an appearance next week.

Anita Kumar and Meridith McGraw contributed to this report.

Following the tragic workplace death of Micheal Fernandez Haith of Irondale, his family has created a foundation in his honor. Haith died in September of last year at Precoat Metal. Hueytown police said Haith was pinned between two large steel coils which led to his death. The Michael Haith Foundation operates under a group called Entrepreneurs on the Move. "There are different programs available such as children dealing with the grief of losing a loved one. How to manage stress levels, we have tools and resources for referrals to different specialist after scheduling a consultation with one of our advisors. Mental anxiety, panic attacks, fear is all associated with the program depending on which level the individual is on. We also have a work and balance plan of exercise to help reduce stress levels. Also, we have a doctor that is in our network that we can refer to them to for psychiatric help as well as grieving counselors," Haith's sister Adrienne Haith-Crawford said. Haith's family was presented with a proclamation back in April from Governor Kay Ivey's office. The proclamation honored those who were being remembered on Worker's Memorial Day which is April 28th. Haith is a graduate of Shades Valley High School and a father of two sons. If you would like to learn more about the foundation, email Crawford at agcrawford99@yahoo.com.

Governor Cuomo Announces Gyms and Fitness Centers Can Reopen Starting August 24 – ny.gov

Governor Cuomo Announces Gyms and Fitness Centers Can Reopen Starting August 24 | Governor Andrew M. Cuomo Skip to main content August 17, 2020

Albany, NY

All Gyms and Fitness Centers Able to Open by September 2; Indoor Fitness Classes May Be Delayed Beyond September 2

Facilities Required to Operate at 33 Percent Capacity and Follow Rigorous Health and Safety Protocols, Including Masks at All Times

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that gyms and fitness centers can reopen in New York starting August 24. Facilities that reopen will be subject to rigorous health and safety standards and all gyms and fitness centers will be able to open by September 2.

"As New York maintains daily positive test rates below 1 percent, the State has determined that local elected officials can allow gyms and fitness centers to reopen at 33 percent capacity while following rigorous safety protocols, including wearing masks at all times," Governor Cuomo said. "While it's encouraging that we've reached the point where it's acceptable for them to begin reopening in our communities, this is not the time to forget that the pandemic is ongoing. New Yorkers must closely adhere to the guidelines and local health departments are required to strictly enforce them to help ensure gyms and fitness centers reopen safely and protect the public health."

Local elected officials may choose to delay the reopening of gyms and fitness centers until September 2 to, in part, provide time for required local health department inspections, and may also choose to delay the reopening of indoor fitness classes until a date beyond September 2. In New York City, the Mayor will determine whether gyms and fitness centers should postpone reopening. Outside of New York City, the county's chief executive - county executive, administrator, manager, or chair of the local elected legislative body - will determine whether gym reopening needs to be postponed.

Localities can also determine whether gyms postpone resumption of indoor classes. In New York City, the Mayor and, throughout the rest of the state, the county's chief executive may decide to opt-out of indoor group fitness and aquatic classes within their jurisdiction, postponing their resumption until a later date. Local health departments must inspect gyms prior to reopening, or within two weeks of reopening, to ensure strict adherence to Department of Health guidance.

Bus offers fitness, financial literacy and other skills for kids – KXAN.com

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) After lots of work, the colorful Fun Fitness Foundation bus is almost ready to be put to use.

When completed, the refurbished school bus will have different built-in exercise games and equipment for kids to use.

Our goal is to pull up, provide some fun fitness and just let the children have a good time on this bus, said Traci Phillips, the executive director of the foundation.

Phillips says the bus will help incorporate fitness into different current programs in the community, from financial literacy to creative arts.

Our organization was formed because West Virginia is number one in adult obesity and number two in childhood obesity, so its very important for us to input fitness into all facets of life for youth, she said.

Especially during COVID-19 when theyre in front of the screens all of the time, why not take part in this program where you can learn something and get a little bit of physical activity too?

The foundation currently offers a fitness challenge, a creative arts program, and a financial literacy workshop where up to 15 kids can participate in a fitness obstacle challenge after completing four courses online.

Theyll work in teams in the obstacle challenge and incorporate what they learned.

Each team will have a chance to win up to $500 to put towards savings, says Mavery Davis, a Charleston-area accountant involved in the financial literacy workshop.

It hit me that I wasnt taught this stuff when I was younger, he said.

Davis says the workshop teaches kids about wants versus needs, budgeting and setting goals especially in these times.

The average family doesnt have $400 to cover an emergency, he said.

I think a lot of Americans were caught off guard nationally but also locally too and a lot of it stems just from good financial training that most of us never had.

All of the programs are free and made possible by a grant by the states Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs.

Any child in West Virginia is welcome to participate.

Students can register here for the financial literacy boot camp after completing the online courses.

Amy Hopkins has been personal training out of driveways and her Pewaukee home for the past two years.

"I love, love, love working one-on-one with somebody and helping them get their goals and what they want," Hopkins said.

On Aug. 10, she opened Anchor Fitness at161 W. Wisconsin Ave.SuiteE-1, Pewaukee.

Herstudiofills up about 950 square feet of the former spaceofBarre District Lake Country. The other section is still up for lease.

"I wanted to own my own space and everything just kind of aligned," she said. "For me, it was just a matter of time before I opened it."

"My goal is to always make them feel comfortable and I never want them to feel intimidated by me or the process," she said. "I want them to feel comfortable telling me their goals, whether they're big or small."

Personal training costs $45 per session. When a client commits to twice a week, they receive$10 off for thatweek.

Hopkins and her husband, Tony, have two kids, Greyson, 10, and Harper, 5.

"It's (FIT4MOM is) all about giving back to that mom and giving moms thathour to just sort of work on herself without having ... that mom guilt because her kid is somewhere else," she said.

Two years ago, Hopkinsbegan working with a personal trainer on her own fitness goals, and received her personal training certification throughAmerican Council on Exercise.

She started personal training family and friends, then took on additional clients.

"The best part of having a trainer stand over you is being able to help them go beyond what they think they can do, reach their ceiling or their max, and the feeling that they get when they see progress and changes," Hopkins said. "It's just great to give that back to people."

Strava fitness app for iPhone expands goals feature to any activity, more – 9to5Mac

Strava may be best known for tracking cycling, running, and swimming but its able to track over 30 fitness activities. Now users can create goals based on any of the activity categories, including elevation and monthly goals.

Strava announced the new functionality for its goals features this week that come with the subscription version of its app. In addition to expanding the activity types past running, cycling, and swimming for goals, athletes can set a target for elevation. The goals feature is now located in the Training tab of the app.

Previously, users could set weekly and year goals, now monthly goals are also an option. And another nice touch is allowing athletes to set goals as private.

Strava highlighted the value of using goals in its Year in Sport 2019 report citing athletes setting a goal of three activities a week instead of two tended to be more consistent, resulting in 2x more activities over the year.

Strava is a free download from the App Store with the goals features available with the premium subscription that runs $8/month or $60/year.

Neil Lennon pleased to see fitness levels improving as Celtic thump KR Reykjavik – Yahoo Sports

Celtic boss Neil Lennon was glad to see fitness levels improving while his side thrashed KR Reykjavik 6-0 in their Champions League qualifier at Parkhead.

Mohamed Elyounoussi netted twice, with Christopher Jullien, Greg Taylor and Odsonne Edouard also on target on Tuesday night, while the Icelandic side scored an own goal through defender Arnor Adalsteinsson.

The Scottish champions play the winner of the tie between Ferencvaros and Djurgardens in the second qualifier next week, while next in the Scottish Premiership is a trip to Tannadice on Saturday to play newly-promoted Dundee United.

The Hoops manager said: It was important to try and increase the intensity and get the games into their legs, so they should get a benefit from that.

Weve got a big couple of weeks coming up now, so its important that we keep our focus now.

The 10 days off didnt help and we only had two competitive games before this game, whereas a lot of other teams have had four or five, so weve got a little bit of catch-up.

The likes of (Olivier) Ntcham has only played 20 minutes here, 20 minutes there, so I want to give him more game time as we go along.

Tom Rogic has only had about 15 minutes in the past three or four weeks.

For the likes of (Hatem Abd) Elhamed and (Nir) Bitton, its been very good for them, and they came through it OK, and for the rest of them, to get through another 90 minutes is important, so hopefully were over that hump now and we go on now.
