At the beginning of each year, many people make resolutions to either accomplish a personal goal or improve their life in one way or another. These resolutions, both large and small, include goals like eating healthier, exercising regularly and learning a new skill.
Staying focused on a resolution year-round is difficult even under the most normal circumstances. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended first responders lives as they continue to serve and take care of patients.
Its easy to place your own needs on the back burner while taking care of others who are suffering and need help. However, it is important to recognize that your health both physically and mentally is more important than ever right now.
To help keep your health and well-being a top priority during such a tumultuous time, here are 10 things every EMS provider needs to know about wellness and fitness.
Its important to remember that you cant take care of others if you dont take care of yourself. This means that if youre not feeling well, now is not the time to act tough and ignore potential symptoms. Call your doctor if youre feeling unwell. Period.
And while physical health should always be a top concern, EMS providers mental health should never be ignored. Red-flag behaviors can include increased feelings of anger, loss of appetite, confused thinking, extreme highs and lows, or feelings of worry or panic. These signs need to be acknowledged, addressed and managed immediately.
During times of increased stress, its critical to check in with yourself and your colleagues and remember that a peer support person or member of an employee assistance program is just a phone call away.
First responders are finding it difficult to relieve their stress in the same ways they did before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. These self-care measures are important, and its imperative for first responders to find new ways of reducing and managing their stress.
For example, exercising has direct stress-busting benefits, like boosting your endorphins, improving your mood and relieving stress or worries.
If sweating it out isnt your way of decompressing, then focus on other hobbies or skills. These can include going fishing, painting, knitting, journaling or meditating.
Finding time to fuel your body with healthy food is a chore, especially when youre running back-to-back calls, shift after shift.
As you continue to respond to and provide care during the pandemic, its crucial that your immune system stays strong. In the event you do contract COVID-19, this can help sustain your body as it fights off the virus.
Here are a few ways to boost your immune system (and target your physical and mental health needs):
Achieving your wellness, fitness and health goals starts with clean eating. But, in order to change your diet, you must first admit that you have a food problem.
With a little planning, these five healthy, on-the-go meals fit the bill for any EMS provider. Get rid of any nutrient-free, high-sugar products from your diet right now. When youre stressed or fatigued, these types of foods may seem like the answer, but theyre not.
Many first responders are working longer hours and extra shifts during the pandemic, and these longer hours can cause exhaustion and fatigue.
A 2015 study found that EMTs and paramedics who work long shifts are 60% more likely to suffer injury and illness than those who work eight- to 12-hour shifts. Furthermore, inconsistent sleep patterns can lead to mental health issues.
As an EMS provider, youre likely always burning the candle at both ends. This makes it difficult to protect yourself from fatigue.
Thats why its important not just now, but always for EMS leaders to tackle this issue head-on and begin implementing ways to ensure that every EMS provider is properly rested. Not sure where to begin? Start with a fatigue risk management program.
Also, on a personal level, try taking a 20- to 30-minute nap or rest break during your scheduled shift. Taking a short nap or just resting your eyes in a quiet, dark room can be helpful.
According to research from Ohio State Universitys Wexner Medical Center, sitting is the new smoking. Use a device that monitors your activity, such as a Fitbit, Apple Watch or pedometer app on your smartphone. These will notify you to get up and move if youve been sitting or staying in one spot for too long.
Need an exercise idea? Try this fat burning workout three times a week even the busiest EMS provider can do this.
If youre missing lifting heavy weights at the gym, try getting outside and going for a 30-minute run. Not only will the fresh air do you some good, but it will allow you to decompress and alleviate your stress after a long, difficult day.
Dont think of exercising as just another thing to check off on your to-do list. Find a physical activity you enjoy whether thats a pick-up basketball game or a brisk walk around the park and make it part of your daily routine. Exercising often and regularly will provide you with at least one activity a day thats directly associated with easing your stress levels.
There are two types of people: those who stretch before and after a workout, and those who dont.
Stretching shouldnt be overlooked not only in a workout, but before, during and after your shift. Stretching not only helps you feel and move better, but it helps reduce your risk of injury. Regularly doing these six stretches will help you perform your job better and keep you and your patients safer.
Do you ever get reminded by your Apple Watch to relax and focus on your breathing?
It might sound and feel corny, but taking deep, conscious breaths allows you to release any negative energy thats being stored in your body. Deep breathing, according to Dr. James Hoyt, a Colorado-based pulmonologist, has been shown to slow the heartbeat, lower or stabilize blood pressure and lower stress.
To properly relax and reduce your stress, find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Then, just breathe slowly and deeply through your nose, and exhale fully. Take a few slow, deep breaths for a couple of minutes throughout your day, especially when youre feeling stressed.

Gone are the days when you had to head to the gym to get a workout. Now all you have to do is open an app on your phone, get dressed, and get moving.
But choosing the best free workout app to use can be overwhelming. With the many options out there, its a lot of work to test and find the best one. So we did it for you! We downloaded the top-rated 20-plus free workout apps and chose the top 10 for general fitness, running, and yoga.
Our top picks for the best free workout apps have quality workouts with easy-to-use interfaces. Most of these apps have a paid subscription option as well. But you get enough quality content with the free version that we felt confident recommending them if youre looking for a fully free option.
Most of these workouts are easy to do without much equipment. Some ask if you have access to weights or other workout gear. But all you really need is a space to work out (such as a yoga mat), some comfortable shoes, and the motivation to try hard!
So grab your favorite water bottle and lets get sweaty!
Seven is the best free workout app for someone short on time. It focuses on making working out accessible, easy, and hard to miss with its short workouts and addicting interface. Each workout lasts for approximately 7 minutes, so you really have no excuses to not fit it into your day.
While completing your workout, animated characters show you how to properly perform each exercise. And a timer counts down to the next activity. With the free version, you have access to a few straightforward workouts, the opportunity to build your own workout, and the ability to join group workouts.
This high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout is meant to be performed quickly, with 30-second working periods and 10-second rest periods. The only equipment you need is a chair.

As far as fully free options go, adidas Training was one of my favorites. I rarely found myself getting shut down by a paywall, although the premium subscription does offer more training plans and other features.
You can choose from suggested workouts and guided workouts with adidas athletes. Create your own workout or let the app make you a training plan. There are a few free training plan options, including active and energized and 6 weeks to six-pack.
Each workout includes videos of people performing each action and will walk you through the workout from warmup to cooldown. And you can participate in challenges.
When you start a training plan, the app will ask you how often you work out, your weight and height, and what you want to get out of training. Then, you will be able to choose how many workouts you want to do per week. The app will then give you a personalized training plan.
The adidas Training app also has a section for health and nutrition, which is mostly part of the paid subscription but still has some quality free content.

Of all the workout apps that I tested, Daily Workouts was the most simple. If all you need is guidance on what to do for your workout and how long to do it for, this is your app. There is no log-in option, so you can simply open the app and begin your workout. It does have ads that pop up, which is how Daily Workouts maintains its free content.
Choose from abs, arms, butt, cardio, legs, or full, and then select how long you want your workout to be. After that, simply press start. The app will show you a video of someone performing the exercise, with a written description and tips on how to get the most out of each exercise.

If you love fitness classes with friends and appreciate the pace and banter of having an instructor, you will love FitOn. This is one of the best free workout apps for group workouts. You can work out with celebrity coaches and even invite your friends to work out with you.
Choose from 22 different categories including small space, barre, HIIT, cardio, and more to find the right workout for you. The workout interface is a video with the trainer giving you tips on technique and body positioning the whole time.
You can also choose a fitness plan that will customize workouts based on your goals. Be more active, build muscle, and reduce stress are all goal options. Once you have a goal, you can then choose how long you want your plan to be, how long each workout should be, and how many workouts you want to do each week.
FitOn also provides an advice section with lots of articles and videos on fitness and health. The paid subscription option also has a recipe section and a personalized meal plan.

Keelo is the best workout app for if you enjoy competition. You can choose from a good variety of free workout options and fight against the clock to complete as many rounds of each exercise as possible. These short HIIT workouts really pack a punch, especially once you get tired.
Movement guide videos help you perform each exercise with proper form. Each workout is on a timer. Some count the time up, and you input when youve completed the correct number of each exercise. Others count the time down, and you complete as many rounds as possible in the set amount of time.

The Couch to 5K program has been a great option for beginning runners since 1996. And now you can get it as a mobile app. This app is ideal for someone who wants to start running but doesnt know where to begin. Aimed at someone who doesnt think that they can run 3.1 miles, this program gives you a place to start.
This app prompts you through an 8-week program with three workouts per week, starting with 30 minutes of walking and running. Its a very low-pressure way to build up to longer runs. And once you complete the 5K program, you can move on to the 10K and half-marathon training plans (these do cost money).
Download from App StoreDownload from Google Play
Less of a workout app and more of an app to track your workouts, MapMyRun is still a standout free option in the world of running. Its goal is simple this app maps your run. It can also map your cycling, hiking, or gym workouts.
The best feature of MapMyRun is that you can actually use the online interface on a computer to map out a run ahead of time. This is perfect when you know you want to run a specific distance and want to plan your route.
It also functions as a social platform where you can share your workouts and view others workouts. The app also has challenges where you can participate in specific fitness events with others.
Download from App StoreDownload from Google Play
Nike Run Club is the best free workout app for runners who might need more guidance. You can use the tracking option on any run. Or choose a guided run experience, where a coach will keep you on pace and help you get the most out of each run.
You can also build a training plan for a race or for a distance youre hoping to run, or use the app to simply get better at running. Each training plan is at least 8 weeks and will give you a workout structure to follow to reach your goals.
This app syncs with Nike Training Club, another great option for a free workout app. Nike Training Club has some great free workouts with videos that show you how to perform each exercise and voice coaches to walk you through the workout from warmup to cooldown.
Download from App StoreDownload from Google Play
The Daily Workouts Simply Yoga app is a simple, easy-to-use option. Open the app and choose between classic routines, latest routines, and streaming videos. Then begin your yoga session.
This free app is a great option for anyone who needs a little bit of guidance with their yoga practice. Follow along with one of the streaming videos for a full yoga class. Or let the app tell you which poses to do for certain amounts of time. The in-app videos also talk you through technique and breathing.
Download from App StoreDownload from Google Play
Not necessarily just for beginners, this app is a great place to start if you dont feel comfortable practicing yoga on your own. This app walks you through each pose with cute cartoon people performing each pose or movement. Calming background music accompanies each workout.
You have many options to choose from including bedtime yoga, immunity booster, power flow, and yoga for text neck. Each workout specifies its length and challenge level as well as the number of calories you should burn.

Should Peloton Be Worried About an Apple Fitness Service? – The Motley Fool

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is reportedly working on some type of fitness-oriented service as part of its concurrent efforts to grow its services business while pushing deeper into fitness and digital health. Many details remain unclear, but the gist of it sounds similar to Peloton (NASDAQ:PTON) offerings: a subscription that provides access to a content library of virtual fitness classes.
Should Peloton be worried about competing with the largest tech company on Earth?
BofA Securities analyst Justin Post doesn't think so. In a research note issued to investors last week, Post reiterated a buy rating on Peloton shares alongside a price target of $72.
Peloton has two types of subscribers: Connected Fitness subscribers, who use the company's equipment; and Digital Membership subscribers, who do not. The latter group is theoretically more liable to switch to another service, as they haven't just spent $2,200 to $4,300 (or more) on a Bike or Tread that requires a $39-per-month subscription. Digital Memberships cost just $13 per month and don't require Peloton gear.
"We think Apple's new fitness app could compete vs. Peloton's digital only subscription offer (though we expect initial class selection and library to be inferior), but will have limited impact on Peloton's connected fitness base that uses Peloton's bike or a tread," the analyst wrote. "We note that Peloton's digital-only subscription revenue was only 1% of total revenue as of [the fiscal third quarter], with the biggest value of digital subscribers being potential conversion to connected fitness subscribers."
Peloton is posting strong growth for both categories of subscribers as consumers exercise from home during the pandemic.

Much like Apple's recent forays into new service categories like video streaming, the initial content catalogs are not particularly robust. It takes a lot of time and money to produce content, and Peloton already offers thousands of on-demand classes in addition to live-streamed ones.
Implicitly acknowledging that Apple TV+ may not be very competitive, the Cupertino tech giant's initial strategy with the service has been to give away a free year of service bundled with certain hardware products, effectively buying it time to build out the catalog before users choose whether to renew for $5 per month.
It's unclear how Apple will pitch a fitness service or how much it will cost. Perhaps it could make sense to bundle it with Apple Watch, the company's most visible fitness product.
Peloton now has over 2.6 million total members, in part because Peloton briefly extended the app's free trial period from 30 days to 90 days earlier this year. That limited-time promotion resulted in over 1.1 million new members last quarter, and investors will want to know how many of those members are sticking around and paying when Peloton reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on Sept. 10.

Wearable Tech Fitness trackers on the rebound – S&P Global
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
Demand for fitness trackers worldwide grew significantly over the past year due to compelling new product releases coupled with strong demand in China. Worldwide unit shipments in 2019 jumped to an estimated 68.2 million, up 32% over shipments in 2018.
Demand for fitness trackers in 2019 was a notable uptick in comparison to recent years, as global shipments had fluctuated between a low of 41.7 million and a high of 51.5 million from 2015 to 2018. Among the recently released products sparking market growth were Xiaomis Mi Band 4 and Mi Band 5, Fitbits Inspire HR and Charge 4, and Samsungs Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Fit E.
Along with these new products, the COVID-19 pandemic is also fueling product sales, as an increasing number of consumers are turning to wearable devices to monitor personal health information such as body temperature and heart rate.
Definition
A fitness tracker, also known as an activity monitor or fitness band, is a device commonly worn on the wrist and used to monitor and track fitness-related metrics such as distance walked, heart rate and calorie consumption. Fitness trackers are relatively easy to use, and are often promoted by medical professionals who note that people wearing fitness trackers are less sedentary and more active than those who do not wear the devices.
Fitness trackers began appearing in late 2011 and early 2012, when a handful of companies, like Fitbit, Nike and Jawbone released the first generation of products.
Market drivers and challenges
The primary market drivers for fitness trackers are:
The products are easy to use and offer information about a person's activity levels and exercise regime, as well as tracking sleep duration and quality.
They often serve as a motivational tool. Just by wearing a fitness tracker, some users are inspired to exercise more often.
Fitness trackers are relatively inexpensive, with most priced between $40 and $150. These attractive price points have made the products a popular gift.
An increasing number of products offer useful health-tracking technology, to include heart rate sensors, body temperature sensors and even blood oxygen trackers (SpO2). The integration of these capabilities is proving to be quite popular with consumers in the era of COVID-19.
Challenges facing the fitness tracker market are:
Overall utility. While the products collect a great deal of data, it is how consumers are able to use the information that makes the products valuable. A number of users have complained that the information provided by the products too often falls into two less-than-beneficial categories:
Accuracy. While most fitness tracker product reviews note that the data collected is generally accurate, other metrics, such as the sleep quality information, are sometimes viewed skeptically.
Over-monitoring syndrome. This issue can reportedly occur when a user gets so caught up in tracking their activity they lose sight of overall fitness goals and focus only on meeting something specific such as a steps-per-day goal.
An occasional failure to meet consumer expectations. For example, a number of fitness tracker vendors admit that approximately one-quarter of fitness tracker users quit using the product after only a few months.
The most significant challenge to the fitness tracker market is that its capabilities are being integrated into another wearable technology product: the smartwatch. Over the past few years, several leading smartwatch manufacturers have begun integrating wellness and fitness tracking capability into their products. With smartwatches, such as the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5, now offering similar or even more advanced functionality to track and provide user health-related information, demand for fitness tracker products is under pressure, particularly in regions like North America and Europe.
Vendors
Currently, the global fitness tracker market is dominated by Xiaomi, which accounted for an estimated 48% of worldwide shipments in 2019. Xiaomi, a Beijing, China-based electronics manufacturer, produces the Mi Band fitness tracker product line. The company sells the vast majority of its low-priced trackers to consumers in China, where the release of a new Mi Band product can spark huge demand. For example, when Xiaomi released it Mi Band 4 in June 2019, the company sold an estimated 1 million fitness trackers in just eight days.
In 2019, Xiaomi shipped an estimated 32.5 million fitness trackers. With the release of the Mi Band 5 in June 2020, Xiaomi appears to have further solidified its lead in the fitness tracker market.
Fitbit, one of the original fitness tracker market leaders, offers a broad line-up of products and is second in global market share. Fitbits Inspire HR, released in November 2019, and the Charge 4, released in April 2020, are driving current demand for its products. In 2019, Fitbit shipped an estimated 9.9 million fitness trackers, up from 8.4 million in 2018.
Forecasts
Global demand for fitness trackers increased 32.4% in 2019, as total shipments reached 68.2 million. Two geographic regions, North America and the Asia Pacific, accounted for 81% of fitness tracker shipments in 2019. While other geographic regions experienced growth in demand in 2019, global market growth is projected to be driven by those two regions through 2024.
Worldwide unit shipment growth is expected to remain solid over the next few years, a change from previous forecasts when the expectation was that the growing popularity of smartwatches would have a negative impact on long-term demand for fitness trackers. However, the past year has highlighted how fitness trackers have succeeded in defending their space in the wearable technology market, primarily by enhancing their health-tracking capabilities and maintaining attractive pricing.
Kagan projects global fitness tracker unit shipments to reach 74.1 million in 2020, boosted by sustained demand for products in China. By 2024, we are forecasting shipments to exceed 90 million, with growth driven primarily by the Asia-Pacific region, but supplemented by rising demand in regions such as Eastern Europe and Latin America.
Estimated fitness tracker worldwide revenues were $4.29 billion in 2019, up from $3.25 billion in 2018. Revenues are forecast to rise to $4.49 billion in 2020, as demand remains solid in North America and in Asia. By 2024, we are projecting global revenues to be $4.97 billion.
Fitness trackers: worldwide revenue forecast by geographic region (US $ in millions)
Average selling prices, or ASPs, of fitness trackers have firmed up over the past year as vendors integrate new capabilities into the products. For example, North American ASPs have remained steady over the past year, with the current product ASP at approximately $87.
Fitness trackers sold in China are priced much lower than in other regions. Currently, Xiaomis popular Mi Band 5 fitness tracker is selling for approximately $35 per unit.

Ever since she's declared 2020 her "Year of Health," Rebel Wilson is opening up about how hard she's working on her goals in frequent workouts, training sessions, and of course, in a brand new diet. The Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect star says she's trying to reach a goal weight of 75 kilograms, about 165 pounds, by the end of the year: "Even if you have to crawl towards your goals, keep going [and] it will be worth it, she shared on Instagram.
This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
Having opened up about her journey on Instagram over the last year, Rebel's fans have returned the favor by letting her know how she's inspired them. "You are looking so fantastic!!!!!!! You give me motivation," one fan shared on a new photo, where Rebel got dolled up for a friend's wedding in what fans call a "stunning" dress by Australian-based designer Wayne Cooper. "Looking fly these days. Motivation... I cant get myself together like you!" another commented on a photo of Rebel in a garden. "You're the best motivation."
The 40-year-old Australian actor and comedian reportedly found her inspiration for her new health journey after visiting a well-known wellness center in Austria. According to People, Rebel's 2020 goals stem from a trip to VivaMayr with pal and TV host Carly Steel in 2019 where she saw "amazing results" based on the center's plan. What kind of treatment did she encounter there, you might ask? As shared in a personal review published in Grazia, Viva Mayr helps guests through a signature detox that involves certain spa treatments, mental health sessions, and a thorough diet and fitness revamp.
Not everyone can jet off for a stay in a medical center in Austria or locations in London, Mumbai, Istanbul, or Moscow for a consultation at the clinic (which costs around $211, according to The Guardian). But Viva Mayr's diet program specifically has been made popular by Harald Staussier, one of the clinic's founders, in a 14-day diet plan that's now known as the Mayr Method Diet, which promises to help you "revamp your health and feel years younger."
Believe it or not, the Mayr Method has been around for more than a century, according to VivaMayr personnel it's based on the "Mayr Cure" created by Franz Xaver Mayr, also known as F.X. Mayr. The basics of the program have to do with a "clean" gut, and a focus on eating foods that massage digestive systems. Maximilian Schubert, the medical director of VivaMayr, told NBC's Today that the Mayr diet has rarely changed over time: "The main idea behind this if people have a healthy gut system and healthy digestive system, then they are going to have a holistic approach of health," Schubert explained.

Usually, people are first introduced to this diet by visiting VivaMayr or one of its many wellness retreats around the world during a prolonged stay and a series of consultations. "VivaMayr combines modern complementary medicine with traditional diagnostics and therapies according to F.X. Mayr, the VivaMayr website reads. Once we have treated your condition, proper nutrition combined with exercise and improved mental awareness become the building blocks of your new life.
Schubert told Today that the first recommendation made to many clients is to start a new fasting regimen: "In general, the first step is always a monotone and restricted diet, to really calm down the body system, food-wise," he said. In addition to adopting a short-term fast, the program will also include a prescribed cleanse, taking new or expanded vitamins, and supplements in what Schubert calls a "detoxification process." It's unclear which vitamins or supplements are used at clinics or Viva Mayr retreats, but there's a good chance that both have to do with aiming to lower the body's pH level based on the tenets of the alkaline diet.
According to our friends at Women's Health UK, in addition to establishing a fasting schedule, dieters will also refrain from eating sugar or drinking coffee (anything containing caffeine) and alcohol during the program. "Quite often, people will have some headaches and mood changes in the first three or four days afterwards, they recover very well again," Schubert told Today.

While the suggestions above are made within the 14-day diet guide, there isn't clear restrictive guidelines for the diet program, and you may adapt the program over time: "It's perfectly acceptable to create your own meals rather than following suggested menu plans, although you may want to try them for a few days first, to get the hang of the way food is prepared at Viva Mayr," the meal plan's introduction reads.

Ultimately, the diet is often purported to be based on the basics of an alkaline diet, but Stefani Sassos, MS, RD, CDN, the Good Housekeeping Housekeeping Institute's registered dietitian, explains that the foods on the diet plan's shopping list aren't actually included in true alkaline-forward diets. "Many foods on this list, including polenta, risotto, meat, and dairy aren't normally allowed on an alkaline diet as they are thought to be 'acidic.'" It may not matter in the end though, Sassos explains, because the alkaline diet's benefits have to do with eating more vegetables, reducing sugar and processed foods intake, and drinking more water (all things you can do without prescribing to a diet!).
Here's a majority of the Mayr Method Diet shopping list as highlighted in the book's introduction:
The 14-day diet plan also comes with a prescribed meal plan and recipes to help you get started.

Because most of the consultations happen at the clinic, Sassos says she's judging what's in the diet's book alone. Overall, the prescribed shopping list and meal plans in the book wouldn't be harmful, per se: "Would the foods on this list do you harm? No, I don't think so." Like every other diet, Sassos says you should enjoy everything on the Mayr diet's approved list in moderation and you should also feel comfortable having prohibited items, like coffee, in moderation as well. "The quality of macronutrients matters in any food, but you could easily gain weight if you're eating an excessive amount of certain foods on this list that are very calorically dense, like cheese, butter, and polenta."
If you attempt the Mayr Method Diet at home, there are a few takeaways you should focus on above all else, including the suggestions to eat more mindfully at mealtimes. "Many of us rush our meals and don't chew our food enough, and chewing is important to ensure proper digestion and maximum absorption later on in our digestive tract," Sassos explains, adding that somewhere between 30-40 chews per mouthful is something you should aim for. "It takes about 20 minutes for your body to signal to your brain that it is full. If we are eating too quickly, we can easily overeat before our brain is able to register that we are full."
One thing you shouldn't try at home is finding supplements to mimic any clinic treatment. "If you see [any product] with cleanse or detox slapped on it, be suspicious and ask questions," Sassos says. "For gut health in particular, staying hydrated and incorporating probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and kombucha into your diet is ideal. I always say food first before reaching for a supplement or pill."
The bottom line: You should always consult your doctor before making a long term change to your diet, but most principles of the Mayr Diet shouldn't be harmful. Remember, any diet needs to be paired with exercise (Rebel is also working hard on her fitness routine, Women's Health reports) for healthy, long-term weight management. The best principle of the VivaMayr program may be to focus more at mealtime: "Take time to actually register what you are eating, savor the flavor, and properly digest your food," Sassos says. "It can also improve your relationship with food and enhance the enjoyment of mealtime."

Soon after little Sadie Chittock was born, it was clear something was not quite right.
Her mum, Rachel Fincham, noticed that she didn't appear to be developing as she should, seemed to be 'floppy' and couldn't hold her head yet despite being over three-months old.
Even from the start, Sadie struggled with feeding and was only putting on a small amount of weight before losing it again.
Over the next few months, Rachel, 23, was back and forth to the hospital with Sadie for tests and check ups to find out what was wrong.
It wasn't until December last year when she was finally diagnosed with a rare and degenerative neurological disease called Pelizaeus Merzbacher Disease (PMD) - a condition which reportedly affects only four other girls worldwide according to estimates.
PMD affects the brain and spinal cord, affecting motor skills, coordination and learning.
Doctors are unable to predict how exactly the disease will affect her because it is usually only found in boys.

However, physio has proved to be vital in Sadie's progression and in order to prevent her deteriorating.
On the NHS, Sadie can have one physio session a month which has been amazing for her development - but Rachel now says she needs more so Sadie can reach her full potential.
Rachel, from Braintree, Essex, is determined to raise as much money as possible to give Sadie the opportunities she deserves.
Because Sadie's condition is so rare, it wasn't an easy process to find out what she had.
"She was about three or four months when we started to notice she wasn't hitting mile stones that she should have been," Rachel explained.
"The professionals said she's was just little and she will catch up soon.
"She was so floppy, she couldn't hold her head and couldn't do things someone her age should have been starting to do.
"I went to weigh her at a weigh-in clinic at Braintree and they said 'no you were absolutely right to have concerns' and they rang through to the hospital and it went on from there."
Over the next few months, Rachel and Sadie travelled back and forth to Great Ormond Street for tests, where eventually they gave the diagnosis.
"It was hard," Rachel said. "They said they found out very early because people don't normally find out till a bit later.
"But again it's very hard because the type she has, PMD, it only generally affects boys, so again we are in limbo with the doctors because they don't know what she will or won't do.
"There are about five girls in the whole world who have it.
"It's hard that they don't know how she's doing to do or not do but generally they get to do things slowly beyond the mile stones before they start to deteriorate and go backwards."
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke explains that Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is "a rare, progressive, degenerative central nervous system disorder, where coordination, motor abilities, and intellectual function deteriorate."
The disease is a type of leukodystrophy, which affects the growth of the myelin sheath - the fatty covering that wraps around and protects the nerves in the brain. The disease is caused by a mutation in the gene that controls the production of the myelin protein.
Other symptoms of PMD may include slow growth, tremor, failure to develop normal control of head movement, and deteriorating speech and cognitive function.
From as soon as Sadie entered the world, she started having issues with feeding on a daily basis and started to lose weight.
She was temporarily fitted with an NG feeding tube before having a gastrostomy tube into her tummy.
"At the beginning, another thing that concerned us was her feeding because she didn't ever want to eat large amounts," Rachel explained.
"She was born at four pounds five and for couple of months she was putting on tiny bits but then she started losing weight.
"The NG tube was fitted which goes through the nose and then three months after, she had a gastrostomy button fitted in."
The gastrostomy tube has been a massive help for Sadie and she quickly started to put weight back on.
Currently, there is no 'cure' for the disease, although there are preventative measures she can take including physio.
Rachel added: "It was a relief to know what it was, but when we found out what it was, it was almost no different to knowing because they don't know how she is going to be.
"There isn't any cure. There are things you can do to prevent it getting worse too quickly which is why I want to get all the physio.
"If we left it, she would deteriorate a lot quicker."
At the beginning of lockdown, Sadie was also diagnosed with epilepsy, which is known to often go hand-in-hand with the condition.
Twice during lockdown, they were rushed to hospital in an ambulance because of an epileptic fit.
This, alongside her condition, means Sadie needs constant round-the-clock supervision and care, as well as ensuring she eats at her exact meal times.
But none of it stops Sadie from smiling.
"She is always smiling," Rachel said. "She has her days where she has little tantrums, she is two.
"And the tears - she is like an actress the way she switches them on and off!
"She's a very happy girl. She can't entertain herself so you feel guilty for doing the things like housework or having to wash up.
"She wants the freedom. The world hasn't grown up with her yet, she's still tiny."
Every day, Rachel does exercises with Sadie to help with her mobility and strength.
She has also been using online sessions and other tools to help Sadie, which have really helped with her development. But these do come at a cost.
"She loves doing it and she loves sitting up," Rachel said.
"She was so bored of being on her back staring at the ceiling. I would love for her to walk but they say that generally doesn't happen and that's why I am trying to fundraise.
"I bought a vibrating board which is good for hypermobility and it helps her get stronger.
"So I have invested in one of them, but it cost 750 with a discount.
"Then we are doing online physio sessions with a lady in Canada and I want to get her out there to see them when Covid is over."
The online sessions cost 70 each. Rachel has also signed Sadie up for intensive physio which is 400 for a week too.
Private physio classes cost around 60 each, and while it is important the sum adds up quickly.
Rachel added: "It does make a huge difference. Throughout Covid, I could do a lot more with her and she has definitely benefited from it.
"At the beginning of [the pandemic], she could sit up but not sit back up if she fell over but now she can sit herself back up and can turn herself around."
At the beginning of the month, one of Rachel's old school friends, Ben Bailey, offered to help raise money for Sadie.
"The lovely thing about it is I hadn't spoken to Ben since school and he randomly messaged me," she said.
"I had put a post about donations for the boot sale to raise money for her next Sunday and he messaged me explaining he was doing these four half-marathons throughout August and that he would rather donate money to her. It was really lovely.
"It would mean everything to me [for people to donate], just to get her to progress the best she can and for as long as we can."
Rachel is hoping the money donated through both fundraisers can all go towards physio classes every two weeks, as well as plan intensive week-long sessions every now and then.
Sadie is due to be starting nursery this September, where a set of nurses have been trained to look after her.
"I'm really scared and nervous and also very excited," Rachel added.
"She will absolutely love it there, she loves any form of attention.
"I am hoping she will benefit from seeing other kids as we don't have many kids around here and family she sees very often."
If you would like to donate to help Sadie with her physio, please click here.
You can also donate to Ben's JustGiving page here too.
Rachel will be hosting a boot sale to raise funds for Sadie on August, Sunday 23 at Boreham Boot Sale.

Employers are increasingly looking to hire temporary workers as recruitment activity picks up with lockdown measures easing, new figures suggest.
A survey suggests a slim majority of employers say they plan to take on both temporary and permanent staff in the next three months.
A narrow majority also said they were confident in making hiring decisions, the first time most responses have been positive since February.
But the latest quarterly poll by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) is also the first in two years to show more demand for temporary than permanent staff.
The REC said temporary work allows firms to create jobs when the future outlook is unclear, and said Britains flexible labour market made such hiring easier.

But data from other sources suggests vacancies remain significantly down on pre-pandemic levels, and hiring intentions do not necessarily translate into jobs.
The preference for temporary staff also signals continued caution among firms despite economic re-opening.
The RECs latest JobsOutlook report shows two-thirds of employers believe economic conditions are getting worse. Business confidence in the wider economy remains historically low.
While hiring has picked up, the survey also suggests rising redundancies. Almost one in five private and public sector firms interviewed between May and July said they had made redundancies in the past year.
Restaurant chain Pizza Express, manufacturer Bombardier and retail giant Marks & Spencer (MKS.L) are the latest in a long list of major UK companies to have announced job losses in recent months.

Economists also expect UK unemployment to keep ticking higher this year. They highlight continued social distancing, the winding down of furlough and other government support, the scarring effects of lockdown on firms, and the fading prospects of fast and full recovery.
Story continues
While the path ahead is still uncertain, temporary work helps firms create jobs sooner, and helps people who need new jobs get back to earning quickly.
Todays data show that as lockdown eases and the economy recovers, businesses will use temporary work to start to build back. That makes sense, and matches the pattern of previous recoveries, said Neil Carberry, chief executive of the REC.
Separate data published on Wednesday also showed vacancies are now rising at the fastest rate all year. Ads on jobs site Adzuna rose by more than 50% month-on-month in July, and almost 170,000 new vacancies were posted in the first week of August alone.
Analysis of Adzuna figures by the Institute of Employment Studies (IES) showed vacancies remained down a third on a year earlier, but the gap has narrowed from two-thirds a month ago.
The overall level of vacancies is now broadly in line with the picture in the early 2010s as we emerged from the last recession, said Tony Wilson, director of the IES.
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, which funded the study, called for extra support for areas and sectors where vacancies are recovering slowly and unemployment is high. The unwinding of the furlough scheme may lead to more people out of work chasing each vacancy, it said in a report.
