Women enjoy a combined 80 years of membership in weight loss club – Butler Eagle

Betty Judson, 94, of Butler Township, had a goal weight of 145 pounds when she joined the Butler chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly, or TOPS, 50 years ago.

My husband liked me at 145, said the spry nonagenarian, who continues to attend TOPS meetings to this day.

TOPS meets at 10:30 a.m. each Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 120 Sunset Drive in Center Township. Costs include $49 for the initial membership fee, then $5 per month.

Judsons favorite living room chair is surrounded by tote bags and stacks of folders containing TOPS information, fliers, notes and other documents.

She helps others in the group by encouraging them and sharing the valuable information she has gained over her five decades in TOPS.

I keep going because Ive made myself useful, Judson said.

She color-codes the diet sheets club members are to fill out each week, which helps them determine where their trouble spots might be.

They can look at their sheets and say I ate too many carbs, and Im going to cut back on that, Judson said.

She also leads the group in song at some meetings and has served as president in the past.

Judson explained that the goal of each TOPS member is to reach and maintain KOPS status, which is an acronym for Keep Off Pounds Sensibly.

I got KOPS in the 70s, Judson said. I was a yo-yoer. Id lose, then gain it all back.

She said each TOPS meeting includes a program that provides information on nutrition or health.

Judson said one meetings program centered on the health benefits of fresh cucumbers, and everyone at the meeting received a packet of cucumber seeds.

The next year, we all had cucumbers, she recalled, laughing.

Many years ago, Judson said those who gained weight were teased, but that practice has pivoted. She said members of the group are like a supportive family, which is why she continues to look forward to meetings.

We are all in there for one reason: to help each other lose weight, Judson said.

Her fellow TOPS member, Sondra Grossman, 88, has been a member for 30 years.

Grossman joined TOPS IN 1994 and earned her KOPS status in 2001.

I saw (TOPS) in the paper, and my weight was going up, she said. I didnt want it to go any further.

Grossman swims at the Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA in Cranberry Township three days per week and rides a stationary bike two days.

She regularly snacks on rice cakes and sugar free Popsicles, and advocates eating smaller portions and just sampling foods she craves.

I eat one cookie instead of six, Grossman said. Just go easy and be sensible.

She said she will continue attending TOPS meetings in the future.

It does encourage you not to eat so much, Grossman said, and we have a good time.

Diane Weibel has been the Butler TOPS chapter leader for two years and a member since 2018.

She said she cant imagine the group without the wise words and friendship of Judson and Grossman.

They are the rock of our group, Weibel said. They are fine examples, and they show us that (weight loss) can be done, and you can keep it off.

She said members who gain weight at each weeks weigh-in must pay a quarter per pound gained, and members pay similar fees for not filling out their diet sheets or not wearing their TOPS T-shirt the first meeting of each month.

Its not a diet plan. Its a support group of your peers, Weibel said. You are held accountable each week.

She said those who join pick a goal weight, and when they reach that weight, they must obtain a document from their doctor that the weight is a healthy one for them.

They then receive KOPS status and the recognition that comes with it.

Weibel has lost 50 pounds so far, and she said she feels she will keep it off thanks to TOPS.

If I wasnt going to TOPS, Id be back up that 50 pounds, she said.

All are invited to join TOPS, which has chapters all over Butler County, but those who join the Butler chapter get to meet Grossman and Judson.

Their knowledge and support, and knowing you can achieve this goal and keep the weight off for the rest of your life, its amazing, Weibel said.

In an interview withThe Guardian, Osbourne, 71, highlighted the downsides of Ozempic, a buzzy diabetes drug that also causes weight loss. She said that after dropping "too much" weight, 42 pounds in four months, she was "through with the weight loss and all that cosmetic stuff."

"I was injecting myself with Ozempic," Osbourne said, adding: "I now weigh 7 stone and can't put on weight." In British weight measurement, a stone is equivalent to 14 pounds.

She said her husband,Ozzy Osbourne, "says I look like Nancy Reagan," whosesmall frame was the subject of scrutinyfrom the media during her husband's time in office.

Osbourne has previously talked about her experience taking the drug for weight loss. Inan interview with the Daily Maillast year, she warned those interested in taking Ozempic to "be careful what you wish for."

"You can lose so much weight, and it's easy to become addicted to that, which is very dangerous," she said. "I couldn't stop losing weight, and now I've lost 42 pounds, and I can't afford to lose any more."

"I started on Ozempic last December, and I've been off it for a while now, but my warning is don't give it to teenagers; it's just too easy," she added.

Ozempic is a brand name for semaglutide, an FDA-approved drug used to treat diabetes. Also sold under the brand names Wegovy and Rybelsus, semaglutide hassurged in popularitysince it wasapproved by the FDA as a treatment for obesityin 2021.

Dozens of A-listershave acknowledged their use of semaglutide, including Elon Musk, Charles Barkley, and Amy Schumer.

The drug works by suppressing appetite, but side effects such asmuscle loss,nausea, and diarrheahave been reported. A doctor previously told Business Insider it was common toregain the weightafter stopping treatment.

Osbourne also reflected on her previous cosmetic procedures, which include breast implants and Botox, in an interview with The Times in December.

She said a facelift she got in 2021 had left her looking like a cyclops and was the "worst thing" she'd ever done.

Animal vs. Plant-Based Protein For Weight Loss – Health.com

The kind of protein youre eating could play an important role in managing a healthy weight.

Now more than ever, people are focused on hitting their protein goals. But its not just the amount of protein you get thats importantwhere it comes from is also key.

Protein is essential for the body to function and can be found in a wide variety of foods, including everything from low-fat dairy to tofu. However, not all sources of protein are created equally.

Generally speaking, people can get protein from animal sourcesthis includes chicken, fish, and eggsor they can get protein from plant-based sources, such as nuts, lentils, beans, or whole grains.

And though many people associate protein with meat, experts say plant-based options may be the healthiest option, particularly for people looking to lose or manage their weight.

The data has started to demonstrate more and more that plant protein is equally efficacious in terms of providing the nourishment needed for the human body, Amanda Velazquez, MD, director of obesity medicine at Cedars-Sinai, told Health. With plant-based protein, theres more benefits as a whole compared to animal protein.

Heres how animal protein and plant-based proteins compare when it comes to weight loss, as well as how to prioritize protein in a well-balanced diet.

No matter the source, protein is a great way to aid in healthy weight loss or management.

Since protein can improve a persons metabolism, higher protein intake can lead to greater feelings of fullness, Amber Schaefer, MS, RDN, clinical nutrition lead and nutrition instructor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, told Health.

And protein doesnt just help people feel fullit can help people feel full for longer periods of time.

[Each macronutrient] affects the body differently in terms of how long it takes for digestion and processing in the gastrointestinal tract, said Velazquez. For protein, it takes longer to break it down and, as a result, requires more energy.

In addition to protein aiding in weight loss itself, its also a vital part of keeping the body healthy while people cut calories.

Inadvertently, an individual is going to lose some degree of muscle mass when theyre losing weight in combination with fat mass, said Velazquez. So in order to preserve that muscle mass, its critical for one to be taking in adequate amounts of protein for their body.

In terms of where to source protein from, experts agree that plant-based options tend to be healthier for the body as a whole.

For one, plant-based protein sources tend to have more fiber than animal protein.

When it comes to weight loss, its especially important to be not only having high protein in the diet, but also a high fiber diet, said Velazquez. Animal protein is not going to have as high fiber as plant-based proteins.

For example: A cup of black beans has about 42 grams of protein and about 30 grams of fiber. A half filet of yellowtail fish has about 43 grams of protein, but no fiber.

The boost of fiber often associated with plant-based proteins can promote additional aspects of well-being.

Plant-based proteins do incorporate fiber, of course, that also helps us to feel fuller longer and helps with our gut health and promotes regular bowel movements, said Schaefer. That in itself can help in weight management.

Plant-based products also tend to be overall healthier for the body.

It depends on the specific type of protein and how its cooked, but in general, plant-based proteins have fewer saturated fats than animal proteins, Schaefer explained.

We do recommend to stay away from overly processed options, because that can, of course, give extra calories from saturated fat, she said.

And, not only can processed foods be more caloric, but they also take more of a toll on the body.

Lunch meat, Velazquez said, is a good example of thisits often processed with nitrites, which have been associated with colorectal cancer.

More broadly, consuming large amounts of red meatespecially processedhas been linked to higher rates of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and mortality.

If we overdo our consumption of animal-based productsso say were eating large amounts of steak or porkover time, that can put a lot more stress on the body, Schaefer said.

In general, the amount of protein adults need each day boils down to about 0.8 grams for every kilogram of body weight.

That means someone whos 150 pounds needs about 55 grams of protein each day.

Whether its to lose weight or just to maintain health, people should try to get the right amount of protein for them every day.

Choosing where to get this protein from can be tricky. Products like protein powder can be easy additions to someone's routine that help them hit their protein goals.

Its a processed item, so being very vigilant and reading the nutrition label is key when it comes to protein powders, said Velazquez. If they have not tried one before and are looking to try one, then I would encourage plant-based.

Beyond just increasing protein intake with powders, the best thing to do is add more protein directly to your diet.

Plant-based protein may be the healthiest option, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a person has to go vegetarian or vegan overnight, Schaefer explained. Instead, make swaps whenever possible.

We do recommend at least getting three servings of some form of legume, whether that be lentils or chickpeas, or if you like, beans, said Schaefer. Just switching out maybe the red meat from that week so youre reducing the amount of saturated fat that youre getting.

She emphasized that restricting all animal protein isnt necessary to lose weight or maintain health, either.

A balanced diet can incorporate both animal and plant-based proteins, she said. My typical recommendation is to get a combination of the two.

In general, people should try leaning towards plant-based proteins, Velazquez said, but leaner proteins such as fish, seafood, chicken, and turkey are also good options if people do want to stick with some animal protein.

The important thing to know is that quality matters, she said.

Can Drinking Lemon Water Aid in Weight Loss? Dietitians Discuss the Popular Trend – Health.com

Lemon water has become the internets newest favorite morning drink. But is it really as beneficial as some people claim?

On TikTok, people say drinking lemon water has helped them detox, get rid of acne, and, most popularly, manage or lose weight.

One video, viewed over 14 million times, promises that within a week of drinking lemon water, people will see an increase in calorie burning, potentially aiding in weight management, as well as improved focus, more energy, and a boosted immune system.

Besides its simplicity, its also been endorsed by celebrities such as Gwenyth Paltrow and Miranda Kerr.As a result, lemon water has become popularized as a must-drink for those who are interested in losing weight or improving their health.

But should lemon water really be your go-to beverage if you want to manage your weight? Or is it yet another pseudo-wellness trend that isnt worth it?

Starting the day with a glass of lemon water has become a popular morning ritual for many people, even before their first sip of coffee.

Its not entirely clear where this hack originated, but drinking lemon water is an old folk remedy thought to have evolved over time, Melissa Mitri, RD, a Connecticut-based registered dietitian and nutrition writer, told Health.

Making lemon water is relatively simple: Cut and juice a lemon and add it to a glass of water. Served hot, cold, or at room temperature, lemon water is also a great way to get a citrusy flavor with no added sugar.

Though lemon water isnt necessarily a new trend, it has become especially popular within the last decade or so.

When one 2008 Japanese study linked antioxidants in lemon to less weight gain [in mice], public interest in this practice increased, Mitri explained. Some believe that the acid in the lemons breaks down fat cells. However, theres little evidence to support this theory.

Drinking lemon water is a great way to add more hydration to your day, and lemon can be a good source of antioxidants, vitamin C, and small amounts of magnesium, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, and more. However, experts agree that the concoction wont help everyone lose weight.

Lemon water is not necessarily better than regular water for weight management, Samantha Turner, MPH, RDN, registered dietitian and owner of OakStone Health and Nutrition, told Health.

There is no research out there that shows lemon water is superior to plain water for weight loss, added Mitri. Drinking more water, in general, is linked to enhanced satiety, weight loss, and a healthier metabolism.

Research has shown that drinking more water is associated with increased fat breakdown and reduced food intake. Increasing hydration has also been linked to a healthier body compositiona 2019 study found that, as water consumption increased, body weight, body fat mass, and waist circumferencedecreased.

While lemon water specifically doesnt have research to back up any purported benefits, lemon juice itself may be beneficial.

Lemon juices acidity has been linked to a positive effect on the bodys glycemic response, or how the bodys blood glucose levels fluctuate after eating carbohydrates.

A 2021 study found that participants who drank 250 milliliters of lemon juice (about one cup) had a lower blood sugar spike after eating a piece of bread as compared to people who drank the same amount of tea or water.

Results of this study also showed that lemon juice increased both gastric secretions and emptying rate, which may support weight loss. This could indicate that lemon water is a healthy after-meal drink, but more data is needed.

In addition to its acidity, lemon also contains vitamin C, and depending on how much you add, it could provide certain benefits.

In human and mouse studies, higher vitamin C intake has been linked to a lower risk of metabolic syndrome, which refers to elevated waist circumference, blood sugar, blood pressure, triglycerides, and/or lower good cholesterol. According to researchers, this suggests that vitamin C supplementation or getting an adequate amount through food may help reverse some of these symptoms.

The bottom line is that, for now, theres a lack of strong data to support the idea that lemon water can cause weight loss more so than plain water.

However, drinking enough water is crucial, so jumping on the lemon water trend should be generally safe and healthy.

[Lemon water] can help provide additional flavor to water and can help reduce the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed, which can help with better weight management, said Turner.

Lemons also arent the only way to get vitamin C or add flavor to waterpeople can also lean on other fruits high in vitamin C, such as strawberries, kiwis, and oranges if they dont enjoy lemon water (or if they dont have a lemon handy).

And drinking lemon water for weight loss or management should be paired with other healthy habits. When consumed in addition to building better nutrition habits full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, and seeds, plus regular exercise, it can help support better weight management, said Turner.

If youre interested in trying lemon water, its important to keep a few things in mind, as well. The high acidity of lemons could erodetooth enamel if consumed in large amounts. To minimize this risk, consider drinking lemon water through a straw, followed by a rinse with plain water.

Also, those with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or a similar condition might find that consuming citrus fruits such as lemons worsens their symptoms like heartburn or chest pain.

As with any dietary changes, its always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure youre making choices that support your individual health needs.

In 1000-Lb Sisters season 5, Tammy also lost her husband, which greatly affected her. However, she seems to have recovered, and viewers are happy. Tammys transformation is one of a kind, and its understandable why she gets so much support. Unlike Amy, who quickly dropped weight, Tammy had to work harder to see results.

Tammy is the underdog in her story. Shes an example of sheer dedication and hard work. Weight loss isnt just a way for her to feel better about herself, but its also an inspiration for countless people around the globe. The Race to Stop Ozempic Muscle Loss – The New York Times

As drugs like Ozempic become increasingly popular for weight loss, more doctors and patients are looking for ways to counteract the muscle loss that can happen on these medications and companies are racing to meet that demand.

Luxury gyms are offering strength-training programs specifically marketed toward people taking these medications, promising to help clients optimize their outcomes. Nutritionists and meal-delivery services are creating plans to help patients pack in enough protein. And drug companies including Eli Lilly, which makes Mounjaro and Zepbound, are looking to develop combination treatments that prevent muscle loss.

I know people are like, Oh, were trying to fix the liability. Its not that, said Dr. Daniel Skovronsky, the chief scientific officer at Eli Lilly. The question, he said, is how to build on the benefits of medication to help patients lose more fat while preserving, or even gaining, more muscle.

Eli Lilly is partnering with BioAge Labs to test whether a compound called azelaprag could help people achieve a more optimal balance of muscle and fat, possibly helping people who are taking Mounjaro or Zepbound lose even more weight. The drug imitates a hormone produced during exercise that can improve muscle metabolism and function.

And last year, Eli Lilly acquired the biopharmaceutical company Versanis, which makes a drug that blocks receptors that regulate skeletal muscle and fat mass. When it does that, muscles get bigger, said Dr. Steven Heymsfield, a professor of metabolism and body composition at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana who has studied the drug, called bimagrumab.

Theres also a trial underway testing bimagrumab and semaglutide, the substance in Ozempic and Wegovy, in adults with obesity. Later this year, the drugmaker Regeneron will begin a clinical trial testing semaglutide in combination with an antibody treatment that blocks receptors that regulate muscle growth. And on Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration greenlit a clinical trial to study whether a compound previously tested as a treatment for muscle loss in older adults could help preserve muscle and shed more fat in people 60 and older taking a weight loss drug.

Does Medicare cover any weight-loss treatments for overweight retirees? I just turned 65 and need to lose about 100 pounds and would like to know if Medicare can help.

Dear Owen,

Yes, traditional Medicare does indeed cover some weight-loss treatments like counseling and certain types of surgery for overweight beneficiaries, but unfortunately it doesnt cover weight-loss programs or medications. Heres what you should know.

For beneficiaries to receive available Medicare-covered weight-loss treatments your body mass index (BMI), which is an estimate of your body fat based on your height and weight, must be 30 or higher.

A BMI of 30 or above is considered obese and increases your risk for many health conditions, such as some cancers, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and sleep apnea. To find out your BMI, the National Institutes of Health has a free calculator that you can access online here.

If you find that your BMI is 30 or higher, Medicare Part B will cover up to 12 months of weight-loss counseling conducted by a medical professional in a primary care setting (like a doctors office).

Most counseling sessions entail an initial obesity screening, a dietary assessment and behavioral therapy designed to help you lose weight by focusing on diet and exercise.

Medicare also covers certain types of bariatric and metabolic surgery for morbidly obese beneficiaries who have a BMI of 35 or above and have at least one underlying obesity-related health condition, such as diabetes or heart disease. You must also show that youve tried to lose weight in the past through dieting or exercise and have been unsuccessful.

These procedures make changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight and improve the health of your metabolism.

Some common bariatric surgical procedures covered include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, which reduces the stomach to a small pouch that makes you feel full even following small meals. And laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, which inserts an inflatable band that creates a gastric pouch encircling the top of the stomach.

Unfortunately, original Medicare does not cover weight-loss programs such as fitness or gym memberships, meal delivery services or popular weight-loss programs such as Jenny Craig, Noom and WW (formerly Weight Watchers).

Medicare also does not cover any weight-loss drugs, but it does cover FDA-approved diabetes drugs that have unintentionally become very popular for weight loss.

Medicare Part D plans cover Ozempic and Mounjaro for diabetes only, not for weight loss! So, your doctor will need to prescribe these medications for diabetes in order to get them covered.

Medicare also does not cover Wegovy or Zepbound because theyre approved only for weight loss.

The reason behind the weight-loss drug omission is the Medicare Modernization Act, which specifically excluded them back when the law was written 20 years ago. They also excluded drugs used for cosmetic purposes, fertility, hair growth and erectile dysfunction.

Without insurance, weight-loss medications are expensive, often costing $1,000 to $1,300 a month. To help curb costs, try websites like GoodRX.com or SingleCare.com to find the best retail prices in your area. Or, if your income is limited, try patient assistance programs through Eli Lilly , which makes Mounjaro and Zepbound, or Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy.

If you happen to be enrolled in a private Medicare Advantage plan, you may have coverage for gym memberships and some weight loss and healthy food delivery programs. These are considered expanded supplemental benefits and have gradually been added to some plans to provide coverage for nutrition, health and wellness. Contact your plan to see what it provides.

Top Doc: "Even During & After Menopause We Can Lose Weight & Keep It off" Here’s How – Yahoo Life

Any veteran of the diet wars is all too familiar with the stress and strain of never being able to claim victory over the scale. And once we turn 40, that battle feels even more difficult. Tactics that used to work suddenly fall short, while a new wave of symptoms like brain fog, low energy and insomnia hit. The almost universal fallout from hormonal changes is weight gain, confirms triple-board-certified ob-gyn Anna Cabeca, DO, bestselling author of The Hormone Fix. But she assures, Even during and after menopause, we can lose weight and keep it off. Keep reading to discover exactly how to stop menopause weight gain by using Dr. Cabecas ingenious diet cycles.

It seems like gaining unwanted pounds is an inevitable part of menopause for most women. But what exactly is causing that weight gain at midlife? It has a lot to do with hormonal fluctuations. While youthful, reproductive hormones decrease as we approach menopause, other hormones that age the body (like insulin and stress cortisol) increase, explains Dr. Cabeca. (She has a lot of personal experience with menopause since she went through it herself twice!)

This hormone shift causes inflammation to rage throughout the body. And scientists know that body-wide inflammation triggers fat cells to shut off their fat-burning powers. Quickly, the body gets locked in a phenomenon called weight-loss resistance, which Dr. Cabeca estimates affects up to 90% of women over 50. Unfortunately, a Johns Hopkins University study found that only 1 in 5 US-based ob/gyns have received formal training in menopausal medicine.

Even if most doctors aren't helpful in this area, there are good reasons to want to fight off menopausal weight gain on your own. According to Brazilian research, as a womans size increases, her menopausal symptoms worsen. Dr. Cabeca says, Women in America suffer greater menopause-related issues up to 800% more than other women around the globe.

Dr. Cabeca witnessed this discrepancy as she watched her mother age rapidly through menopause and pass away from heart disease at 67, while family members in other countries lived into their 90s. After traveling the world studying how women eat, Dr. Cabeca concluded, Our diet is to blame. She determined, Menopause is natural, but symptoms and weight gain are optional.

The good news: It doesnt take a major diet overhaul to rebalance hormones and melt fat during menopause. And surprisingly, its not about adopting one diet for the rest of your life.

Through clinical research, Dr. Cabeca discovered that switching up your eating habits for just six days reboots your metabolism, making weight loss easier. So she created several short dietary pauses in which you stop consuming certain foods like sugar, grains or meat for a brief period of time to reset your metabolism. (For example, you can start a plan every Monday and enjoy a cheat day every Sunday before cycling on to the next mini plan.)

Just like you have to change up your exercise routine, you have to change your eating routine to keep your metabolism on its toes," explains Dr. Cabeca. But how? By switching things up, we make the body more insulin-sensitive, allowing women to drop one dress size a week, says Dr. Cabeca. Her plan also increases body stores of oxytocin (the joy hormone), which counteracts the inflammatory stress of cortisol, while naturally suppressing appetite.

Quick-switching between plans can melt away the weight that accumulates in the midsecton during menopause. In a University of Southern California study, subjects on a short-burst diet had 86% less belly fat after three months than those on a standard diet. Study author Valter Longo, PhD, has seen that dieters doing short detoxes take 413% more inches off their waist compared to nondieters. He assures, The body is better able to regulate everything after five days. It goes back to functioning optimally.

These short dietary resets also guard against weight-loss resistance and its related health risks. In another study, folks who used a short liquid plan then leapfrogged to another healthy plan shed triple the weight and were 250% more likely to get off blood-pressure meds than those who stayed on one diet. The Detox Diet author Elson Haas, MD, says, Its a tremendous kick start!

These programs are responsible for tens of thousands of women preventing and reversing menopause symptoms, says Dr. Cabeca. For example, one of Dr. Cabecas patients went from having 60 hot flashes a day to zero! Other patients got off Rx medications for diabetes and cholesterol. Choose one of the following mini plans, created by Dr. Cabeca, to start rebooting your metabolism. Each one allows you to diet for six days and feast for one, before moving to the next mini plan or repeating your favorite. No matter which plan you choose, always eat three meals a day, pausing to avoid sugar, alcohol and processed carbs for the week.

On the six-day keto-green plan, you limit carbs and pause inflammatory foods, namely grains, eggs, butter, legumes, nightshades (like tomatoes and eggplant), nuts and seeds. Focus mostly on eating healthy fats (avocado and olive oil), then protein (meat, fish) and limit carbs from fruit and veggies to 40 daily grams. Your dinner formula: 1 protein serving + 2 servings of low-carb vegetables + 1 to 2 fat servings. Try this sample meal: Stir fry with sliced chicken thighs plus steamed veggies and cauliflower rice.

This mini plan is great to use if youre struggling with blood sugar. It stabilizes levels, which is good news for women who suffer from hot flashes that are caused by blood sugarimpacted changes in blood pressure. Also incorporate these helpful plan tips

On this six-day plan, youll pause all food groups except animal products: meat, fish and eggs. (Try hard-boiled eggs for breakfast, chili for lunch and fish for dinner.) This plan is an effective way to smash past a weight-loss plateau, says Dr. Cabeca. Protein can help you spot-reduce your tummy, so expect to lose a pound a day or more. This approach is also ideal for people who are bothered by aches and pains or autoimmune symptoms. It also supports healthy blood vessels to ease hot flashes. Some users call it a pain eraser. And thanks to the amino acid arginine, found in meat, this plan helps restore muscle tissue lost with age. Also consider these top tips:

Opt for anti-aging protein. Sip a cup of collagen-rich bone broth to quell cravings between meals. Functional medicine expert Amy Myers, MD, says, Collagen turns your body into a fat-burning machine, even when youre at rest!

For six days youll pause acid-forming foods like meat and cheese and enjoy three alkalinizing plant-based meals a day. Reach for fruits, veggies, beans, tempeh, tofu, lentils and seeds, plus healthy fats and healing spices like garlic. For a sample meal, try hearty red lentil soup made with veggie broth.

This plan is great for women struggling with menopausal constipation. Most of us dont get enough fiber and dont realize how constipated we are, says Dr. Cabeca, but this fiber-rich plan restores regularity while maintaining the ketosis of a low-carb diet. Chew well. To extract the healing properties of hard-to-break-down plant proteins, slow down and really chew your food, says Dr. Cabeca. Not only will you digest food more easily, research shows that chewing 40 times per bite curbs production of hunger hormones.

Eat probiotic foods, like coconut-milk yogurt and fermented sauerkraut, which heal the microbiome to improve digestion and ease pain and bloat. As a result, youll shed what Dr. Cabeca calls toxic waist that collects in the midsection.

To boost energy and improve your mood youll pause solid foods on this liquid detox plan, built around juices, broth, caffeine-free teas and smoothies made with leafy green veggies, low-sugar fruit and nuts. Try whipping up a delicious smoothie bowl made with 1 cup unsweetened cashew milk, 1 cup spinach, 12avocado and a dash of cinnamon. Top with berries and unsweetened coconut.

This plan is ideal for people who are plagued by anxiety or worry. Dr. Cabeca says, In one smoothie you can sip a combination of nutrients that reduce cortisol, normalize insulin, regulate estrogen levels, improve mood and increase metabolism. Add fat. Start the day with 2 Tbs. of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon. It gives the body nutrients that end cravings, says Dr. Cabeca. At first, women think, Im not doing that, but soon they look forward to it. And the weight-loss results are insane.

To keep slimming after cycling through these dietary pauses, simply introduce some carbs (healthy non-keto meals) back into your routine. UM, IM NOT AWARE THAT ITS IN ANY DATA THAT SHOW THAT IN HUMAN, I HAVENT EVEN SEEN A PATIENT. UH, BUT WE HAVE TO B CAUTIOUS AND INTERROGATE THAT MEDICAL HISTORY OF THE PATIENT. ANY FAMILY HISTORY OF, UH, THYROID CANCER, UH, RECENTLY, ACTUALLY, THIS WEEK, THERE WAS A CONCERN OF INCREASE OF PANCREATIC CANCER. THERE IS NO, NO PROOF OR ANY DATA THAT SUGGESTS THAT THERE IS AN INCREASED RISK FACTOR FOR PANCREATIC CANCER, BUT DEFINITELY ITS A RISK INCREASE. RISK OF HAVING PANCREATITIS, WHICH IS, UH, INFLAMMATION OF THE PANCREAS. THAT IS A SEVERE, UM, DISEASE THAT 30% OF GET SEVERE COMPLICATION AND EVEN DEATH. I HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION FOR YOU. IF WE GET TO VERY QUICKLY AND THAT IS HAVE YOU HAD PATIENTS TURNED DOWN THE USE OF EITHER OF THESE DRUGS BECAUSE OF THOSE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS? JESS. THEY HAVE A ROLE IN THE TREATMENT OF THE DISEASE. BUT WHEN YOU LAY OUT SIDE EFFECTS COSTS BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR, UH, UM, WEIGHT LOSS, THE INSURANCE COMPANIES STILL NOT COVER ERIN. IF THE PATIENT IS NOT DIABETIC, YOU HAVE TO BE DIABETIC AND SUFFERING FROM OBESITY TO APPROVE AND COVER THE MEDICATION. OTHERWISE ITS VERY EXPENSIVE. THAT CAN GO FROM 900 TO $1000 A MONTH. SO WHEN YOU PUT EVERY THING IN PERSPECTIVE, SIDE EFFECT, COST BENEFIT PATIENTS. YEAH. HOW PATIENT THAT THEY DONT. WANT TO. Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for your overall well-being and influences nearly every aspect of your health. Shedding excess weight can significantly reduce your chronic disease risk, including conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Additionally, research shows that achieving and maintaining an optimal body weight through well-balanced nutrition and regular exercise contributes to longevity, vitality, and a better quality of life.

"You can perform these movements by themselves, like walking, jogging, or swimming," says Furr. "Other movements can be turned into intervals or supersets for a longer workout duration. Modify movements or duration depending on your fitness level."

Brisk walking is a simple yet effective weight-loss activity that nearly everyone can incorporate into their fitness routine. It's a low-impact exercise that increases your heart rate, burns calories, and helps shed excess pounds when done consistently.

Furr tells us, "Simply walk at a brisk pace for 30 to 60 minutes. Aim for three to five times per week."

Jogging burns more calories than walking and elevates your heart rate more rapidly. Plus, jogging is an excellent aerobic exercise for weight loss that also enhances cardiovascular health, reducing your risk of heart disease. According to the American College of Cardiology, runners have a 45% lower risk of death due to stroke or heart disease.

"Start with a light jog and progress to running as your fitness improves," says Furr. "For weight loss, plan to run for 20 to 30 minutes, three to four times weekly."

Jumping jacks are a classic calisthenics (bodyweight) exercise that boosts your heart rate and burns calories. This stellar full-body movement engages multiple muscle groups to incinerate calories and melt away extra pounds.

"Stand with your feet together, jump while spreading your arms and legs, and return to the starting position. Repeat this movement for 30 to 60 seconds without breaking. Perform four rounds with one minute of rest between," says Furr.

Bodyweight squats are a fundamental exercise that targets your lower body muscles while engaging your core. Additionally, this compound movement helps tone and strengthen your legs while torching plenty of calories, making it a valuable addition to your weight loss routine.

"Bodyweight squats are accessible for all fitness levels and can be easily modified to suit individual needs," Furr explains. "Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, lower your hips toward the ground, then stand back up. Complete four sets of 15 to 20 reps with one minute of rest between."

This movement is a versatile and effective upper-body exercise that engages your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. Pushups are a staple bodyweight exercise that builds strength and burns calories to support healthy weight management.

Furr instructs, "Start in a plank position. Lower your body toward the ground by bending your elbows, then push back up. If too challenging, modify to knee pushups or elevate your body for box push-ups. Aim for four sets of 10 to 15 reps."

Lunges are a powerful and dynamic lower-body exercise that targets the quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Adding them to your routine will strengthen your lower-body muscles and enhance stability and balance.

"Step forward with one foot, lower your hips until both knees are bent at a 90-degree angle, then step back," instructs Furr. "Do four sets of 12 to 15 reps per leg with one minute of rest."

This static hold engages your abdominal muscles, back, and shoulders, boosting overall core stability and helping shrink your waistline. While planks may not burn many calories on their own, incorporating them into your workouts helps build a solid and toned midsection and support your weight loss journey.

"Hold a plank position with straight arms or forearms, keeping your body straight," instructs Furr. "Do this for 30 to 60 seconds and repeat four times. Rest for one minute between rounds."

Furr says, "Start in a plank position, bring one knee toward your chest, then switch legs in a running motion. Complete four sets of 20 to 30 reps per side."

While many of us have a love-hate relationship with burpees, you can't deny they're a high-intensity calorie-torcher that elevates your heart rate and delivers a cardio boost.

To do them, Furr says, "From a standing position, squat down, kick your feet back into a plank, do a push-up, jump your feet back to your hands, then jump up. Perform four rounds of 10 to 15 reps with one minute of rest."

Whether on a stationary bike, trail, or road, cycling is a fantastic low-impact exercise that burns calories while strengthening your lower body. It's also an enjoyable and sustainable option for those looking to shed pounds without too much strain on their joints.

"Ride a stationary bike or cycle outdoors for 30 to 60 minutes. Aim for three to five sessions per week," says Furr.

Swimming is another low-impact, full-body exercise that provides an excellent combination of cardiovascular and strength benefits. Plus, swimming is downright fun.

"Swim laps in a pool or engage in water aerobics," recommends Furr. "Swim for 20 to 30 minutes three to four times weekly."
