No one could have anticipated that the five-day program, known as ProLon, would soon become the go-to response to the Covid-cushion (the extra pounds acquired during months of hermetic indulgence during lockdown) for those who could afford $250 for five days of starvation rations.
The timing couldn't have been more fruitful. The program is designed to make the body think it's in a fasting state, without actually requiring the participant to avoid food altogether. And while you do have three meals a day, and some days even have snacks, don't be fooledthe rations are small. Much like Paltrow, who documented each day of her experience on the program, Harry Slatkin attests that its no walk in the park.
Participants receive a five-day supply of food, and are instructed to drink no other beverages than water and herbal tea (coffee is discouraged). Day one provides about 1,150 calories and the subsequent four days hover around approximately 700. All meals are plant-based, and each day includes soups, bars, teas and supplements to ensure the participant still ingests essential micronutrients.

Slatkin, who lost 12 pounds and was still able to play tennis during the program (in the Palm Beach heat, no less), remarks that you dont necessarily feel hunger, but the cravings were acute. The craving part is probably the part that does you in. This happened for me around the third day. I was missing food but yet not hungry, which is an odd feeling. By the end it felt very restrictive, he says.

My own introduction to the ProLon FMD five-day program came after binging the entirety of Goop Lab. Even watching Gwyneth lament that the soups were not her favorite and that she was feeling low-energy, my interest was piqued. I wasn't necessarily trying to lose weight, but after months of traveling and indulgence, my system was in need of a reset. I started ProLon on Monday, March 9. You could say I was ProLon's first pandemic participantjust don't check me on it. The five days of soups, olives, crackers, and teas flew by. And unlike Gwyneth, I didn't feel like the soups were all that bad. If you are partial to savory rather than sweet, you won't really feel like the meals lack in flavor. I did however add a touch of nutritional yeast to the mix, per the recommendation of a dietician friend, for added B12.
I wasn't exercising save for a daily walk, but I didn't feel all that exhausted. Or hungry for that matterand I was around people who were eating regularly. That said, encroaching contagion does make one want to sit on the couch and eat girl scout cookies to cope, so I will admit to moments of temptation. I held out.
On day one and two, I did distinctly miss substantial food. The third day of the program has what felt like the least amount of foodand it was by far the hardest. I was definitely hungry. Once I had finished, I didn't weigh myself, but my clothes fit differently. And I no longer felt compelled to anxiously nosh in the afternoon to kill time. My stomach shrank noticeably while on the program so once I finished, I had considerably more control over portion size at mealsand this effect lasted too.
Most importantly, I was craving less sugar and caffeine, both of which I leaned on pre-cleanse to cope with low energy and anxiety.
After I'd finished the program, I vowed I would do one again. But how soon is too soon? Dr. Will Hsu explains that if you want to maximize your results on the program, ProLon suggest doing it once a month for three consecutive months. Research Shows Plant-Based Diets Lower Blood Pressure – Everyday Health
If you want to make dietary changes to lower your blood pressure and protect your heart, researchers have pinpointed a simple hack with tremendous benefits: Add more plants to your diet, like vegetables and whole grains, and cut back a bit on meat and dairy.
Thats the takeaway from a comprehensive new review by researchers at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. While many studies have been published that have seen an association between a plant-based diet and better heart health, theyre mostly observational studies, so it is impossible to say if the diet caused better health outcomes.
But a new review, published July 23 in the Journal of Hypertension, looked only at clinical trials in which a test group was given a particular plant-based diet and a control group was given a more standard diet.
By analyzing clinical trials, we are able to establish causation that the diet in the trial led to either a positive or a negative outcome, says Francesco Cappuccio, MD, a professor at the medical school at the University of Warwick and a senior author on the paper. And we see in the clinical trials that the effect of the diet intervention on blood pressure is quite large.
Dr. Cappuccio and his team focused on blood pressure because it is a prominent and well-established determinant of heart disease, stroke, and metabolic diseases like diabetes.
The review analyzed the effects of 41 different studies involving a total of 8,416 participants across seven different plant-based diets, in which blood pressure was studied in controlled clinical trials. The seven diets included the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH diet;the Mediterranean diet;a vegetarian diet;a vegan diet;the Nordic diet; a high fiber diet; and a high fruit and vegetable diet.

The findings may upend a bit of conventional wisdom: It turns out that the diets that had some animal protein in them had the largest effect in lowering blood pressure, while a vegan diet, which completely eliminates animal protein, had the smallest blood pressure benefit.
Thats not surprising, since a vegan diet lacks important nutrients, says Cappuccio. A little meat is actually important. So thats great news for people who want to eat healthier but dont want to give up meat and eggs. Just try to transition away from red meat, eat more plants, and go easy on the salt.
As far as lowering blood pressure, the DASH diet, which encourages eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting the intake of sweets, saturated fat, and sodium, was the most effective. It lowered both systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure more effectively than any other diet.
That result is not surprising since the diet targets hypertension specifically, but it emphasized that there is a role for animal protein in a heart-healthy diet, says Cappuccio.
In fact, several diets that included a small amount of animal protein, whether from fish or from eggs and dairy, lowered blood pressure more effectively than a vegan diet. After the DASH diet, the next two best diets for blood pressure were a vegetarian diet that included dairy and eggs, and the Nordic diet.
For the uninitiated, the healthy Nordic diet, according to the study, involves higher intake of plant foods, fish, eggs, and vegetable fat, and lower intake of meat products, dairy products, sweets, desserts, and alcoholic beverages.
One notable exception to the trend was the Mediterranean diet, which encourages the frequent consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and olive oil, as well as moderate intake of legumes, nuts, fish, dairy, and eggs, and an extremely limited intake of red meat.
While the Mediterranean diet is very healthy, it can be heavy in salt, which is why we didnt see as large an effect as with the DASH diet, says Cappuccio.
The shift to a more plant-based diet would save lives and a tremendous amount of money in healthcare spending. The study notes that a diet that limited consumption of animal products would lead to a 14 percent reduction in strokes, a 9 percent reduction in heart attacks, and a 7 percent reduction in overall mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Cappuccio notes that beyond diseases related to blood pressure, the health benefits would extend to reductions in diet-related cancers, like colon cancer, and to improvements in overall health from an improved gut microbiome.
Looking beyond human health, the study authors conclude their review by citing the ecological benefits of shifting toward a plant-based diet. They point out that livestock farming accounts for 80 percent of land use and that it takes 43,000 liters of water to produce 1 kilogram (kg) of beef. By contrast, it takes only 1,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg of grain.
If we want to save the planet and feel healthier, then this switch to a plant-based diet is a no-brainer, says Cappuccio.

How to treat it: If its not related to another condition, gas can often be treated and managed with various over-the-counter medications (such as Beano or Gas-X) and dietary changes. If you experience chronic gas and severe pain, it could be a sign of another underlying GI condition, which a doc can help to diagnose.
5. Food poisoning
Food poisoning results from eating contaminated food, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, in addition to abdominal pain, according to the Mayo Clinic.

This condition typically includes upper abdominal pain with the pain occasionally localizing to one side, says Dr. Dann. Additional symptoms include abdominal bloating, fullness, nausea, and the inability to eat a full meal, or feeling full after only a small amount of food.
How to treat it: To treat this condition, with the guidance of a doctor, discontinue use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and work to eliminate H. pylori with appropriate medications to promote ulcer healing, says Dr. Dann.
This is the term used to describe gastrointestinal symptoms where the cause seems to be unknown. Symptoms of functional dyspepsia can overlap with GERD and gastritis, says Dr. Dann.
How to treat it: Patients under 60 years of age should be tested and treated for H. pylori, says Dr. Dann. This sometimes will include an upper endoscopy, particularly if theyre over age 60. Patients who are H. pylori negative or who continue to have symptoms after gettiing rid of the bacteria should be treated with antisecretory therapy with a proton pump inhibitor.
These are the terms for inflammation in the lining of the intestines and colon, respectively. Symptoms will vary based on the location and cause. In both cases, the underlying cause could be due to a condition such as Crohns disease or even something more benign such as a lack of blood flow to the abdominal area, says Dr. Dann. Patients with infectious colitis generally have diarrhea associated abdominal pain, which may be severe.
How to treat it: Depending on the severity of symptoms, antibiotics may be needed.
Acute appendicitis typically presents initially with pain around the belly button which radiates into the right lower quadrant of the abdomen area, says Dr. Dann. It is associated with nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
How to treat it: For patients with non-perforated appendicitis (meaning the appendix hasn't bursted), you'll likely need an appendectomy in a fairly timely fashion. If the appendix hasnt been ruptured, you may be able to treat it solely with antibiotics. If the appendix has ruptured? You'll need emergency surgery.
Gallstones can cause intense discomfort or sharp pain located in the right upper quadrant or other area below the chest. That's because gallstones occur when digestive fluid deposits have hardened in the gallbladder, and these "stones" have temporarily blocked the duct, causing discomfort and pain. The pain may radiate to the back and right shoulder blade and symptoms can also include nausea, vomiting, and sweating. How to treat it: During a gallstone attack, pain can be controlled with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Elective gallbladder removal should be considered for patients with gallstones on imaging to prevent future attacks and complications of gallstone disease, says Dr. Dann.
This is the term for when inflammation occurs in the gallbladder, typically from a clogged duct (like from a gallstone). Acute cholecystitis symptoms can include severe, prolonged, steady pain (like for more than four to six hours) involving the right upper quadrant. You may also have a fever and an elevated white blood cell count, and you may be hypersensitive when you put pressure on the area below the ribs while breathing deeply.
How to treat it: This is a more serious condition that requires hospitalization, says Dr. Dann. Treatment will include intravenous hydration (meaning through an IV), pain meds, IV antibiotics, and surgery to remove the gallbladder.
Acute cholangitis can present similarly to acute cholecystitis but is typically more severe, says Dr. Dann. It occurs when a stone becomes impacted in ducts draining bile from the liver into in the small intestine, leading to an infection. Symptoms include fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eye), and abdominal pain. The abdominal pain is typically vague and located in the right upper quadrant.
How to treat it: Similarly to the previous condition, treatment will include hospitalization with intravenous hydration, pain medications, antibiotics, and surgery.
The OG reason for going gluten-free, celiac disease sufferers tend to experience abdominal pain and excessive flatulence in addition to diarrhea, which is often foul-smelling due to malabsorption, says Dr. Dann. Symptoms can present as early as infancy but most commonly present between the ages of 10 and 40. Patients may also experience weight loss, anemia (low red blood cell count), neurologic disorders from deficiencies of B vitamins, and osteopenia (thinning of the bones) due to vitamin D and calcium deficiencies.
How to treat it: Most patients can manage celiac disease with a gluten-free diet, as well as by monitoring and reporting any complications to their doctor.
Pancreatitis can be acute and chronic. The pain is typically severe and can even radiate to the back. Symptoms can also include nausea and vomiting, and you might feel a little bit of relief when you sit upright or lean forward, says Dr. Dann.
How to treat it: Most cases of pancreatitis require hospitalization, along with fluid replacement and pain meds.

Gastroparesis is a condition when the stomach can't properly empty itself of food contents. In addition to abdominal pain, a person with gastroparesis will have nausea, vomiting, early satiety, bloating, and in severe cases, weight loss. The cause is often unknown, but gastroparesis can be seen in diabetics and post-surgery patients.
How to treat it: Treatment typically includes making changes to your diet, getting your blood sugar levels and changes under control if you're diabetic, and hydrating. Medication such as metoclopramide (Reglan) may be necessary, and some patients may require a feeding tube, says Dr. Dann.
Kidney stones occur when a stone passes from the kidney into the ducts carrying urine to the bladder. Mild to severe pain is the most common symptom and can occur in the back or abdomen. Additional symptoms include nausea, vomiting, painful or urgent urination, and blood in the urine.
How to treat it: Kidney stones are most often treated with pain medication and hydration until the stone passes naturally through your urinary system. Large stones may require additional treatment, like lithotripsy (a procedure used to help break up the stones) or surgical removal.

How to treat it: Initial treatment typically includes oral contraceptives and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, says Dr. Dann. However, recurrence rates are high if you stop taking medication. If treatment isnt successful, surgery to remove the tissue growth is an option.
Also known as leiomyomas, uterine fibroids typically lead to chronic lower abdominal/pelvic pressure or pain. Symptoms will vary depending on the size and number of fibroids and can include abdominal tenderness and low-grade fever, and your gyno may be able to feel large fibroids during an external abdominal exam.
How to treat it: Treatment can include oral contraceptives or GnRH agonists (medications that affect hormone levels). Some women also find relief with an IUD as a birth control method. In other cases, myomectomy (a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids) might be necessary.
Ovarian cysts are solid or fluid-filled sacs or pockets in or on top of an ovary. Pain is often a sign that the cyst has ruptured or burst, says Dr. Dann. The most common symptom is lower quadrant pain, and especially pain after sex.
How to treat it: Ovarian cysts can often be managed with monitoring by your doctor and with over-the-counter pain-relief meds. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
This pain can occur in the middle of your menstrual cycle, coinciding with timing of ovulation. It may be right- or left-sided, depending on which side youre ovulating from during that cycle.
How to treat it: This pain usually goes away within 24 hours, says Dr. Dann. You can treat it with over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. If ovulation is particularly painful for you, taking birth control pills to prevent ovulation may be a solution worth talking to your gyno about.
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus, typically on the fallopian tube. It typically occurs during the first trimester, with symptoms such as abdominal pain and or vaginal bleeding that can be life-threatening.
How to treat it: With an early diagnosis, most patients may be treated with a drug called methotrexate (MTX). But in some cases, a woman may need surgery, says Dr. Dann.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) typically includes acute lower abdominal and or pelvic pain. Patients may also have pelvic organ tenderness and evidence of inflammation of the genital tract. Any sexually active woman is at risk of developing PID, and it most often happens when an STD is left untreated, causing this infection of the reproductive organs.
How to treat it: Treatment can include antibiotics used to treat gonorrhea, chlamydia, and other bacterial infections. Severe or complicated PID may require hospitalization.
Ovarian torsion occurs when an ovary becomes twisted around the ligaments that hold it in place. Symptoms can include moderate to severe pelvic pain, typically associated with nausea, a noticeable mass or bloating in the pelvic area, and sometimes vomiting, says Dr. Dann.
How to treat it: Ovarian torsion can sometimes resolves itself, but it often involves surgery. Surgical removal of the ovary may sometimes be required as well, says Dr. Dann.
Ovarian cancer has a reputation as a silent killer, as its often asymptomatic until its in an advanced stage. But early symptoms may include bloating or abdominal/pelvic pain, urinary urgency or frequency, and postmenopausal bleeding.
How to treat it: Treatment will require surgery followed by chemotherapy, says Dr. Dann.
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can cause abdominal discomfort from enlarged ovaries in women undergoing fertility treatment. Early symptoms are usually mild to moderate and begin four to seven days after the ovulatory dose of the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone. Late symptoms are typically more severe and begins at least nine days after the ovulatory dose of hCG during a conception cycle.
How to treat it: Mild or moderate OHSS and can be managed with analgesics such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), and by avoiding intense physical activity, says Dr. Dann.
Endometritis is the inflammation of the inner lining of the uterus, a.k.a. the endometrium. It typically involves lower abdominal and pelvic pain, as well as painful periods with cramping, pain during sex, and/or infertility. It can also lead to bowel and bladder issues, notes Dr. Dann.
How to treat it: Most infections are mild and cured with antibiotic therapy, though some may require IV antibiotics or curettage, a surgical scraping procedure to remove the affected tissue.
Crohns disease is another type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. Its marked by symptoms such as abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, cramping, and bloody stool, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you have have symptoms that could be consistent with Crohns disease or have already been diagnosed, you should always be evaluated with a thorough consultation and examination by a physician for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan, and to exclude a more serious or urgent condition, says Dr. Dann.
How to treat it: While theres unfortunately no cure for Crohns, its often treated and managed with medications such as corticosteroids, immune system suppressors, and antibiotics. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

Breathing problems: why am I having trouble breathing? – Netdoctor
Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties can be a frightening symptom, whether it is something that has happened to you out of the blue or something you have had to learn to live with through chronic disease.
Shortness of breath is the most common reason for attending Accident and Emergency and one of the most common reasons for calling an ambulance, yet not so many people consult their GP about their breathing as they should.
Around 10 per cent of the UK adult population suffer with shortness of breath and almost a third of the older population. Many people struggle on with symptoms at home and could better manage their breathlessness by working with their medical team closely.
We talk to Dr Louise Wiseman about some possible causes of feeling breathless in adults.
The medical term is dyspnoea. Shortness of breath can be subjective, in other words, when we are not breathing as we normally do. We may feel that we cannot take a deep breath in, or that our breathing is shallower and faster than normal, or difficult and uncomfortable. This may affect us when sitting still or only when we exert ourselves.
Real breathlessness can be related to many physical factors within our body and our environment and how we are feeling in ourselves. If we are feeling anxious our symptoms may worsen and a vicious cycle develops.
Exercise is like a natural test for our heart and lungs. It is normal and healthy to get out of breath when you exert yourself, whether this be running a mile or walking up the stairs. Your own limit will depend on your overall fitness and level of exertion that you exhibit daily. With exercise training, you will usually notice your tolerance improves and shortness of breath becomes less of a problem as you climb the stairs at the shopping mall car park.
Sometimes though, exercise can unveil a medical problem that you would not notice at rest. Exercise may bring on asthma or may reveal cardiac problems if you are suddenly limited more than normal.
For this reason some asthma medications, e.g long acting beta-agonists, are slow release helping to stop the airways spasming on exertion and are used prior to exercise.
Our body reflects closely the activity in our brain and if you are generally feeling anxious your heart and breathing rate may increase. You can recognise the feeling and the need to calm yourself. Sometimes though, this feels out of control and can become a panic attack. You can find yourself hyperventilating (over-breathing) or breathing fast.
Slowing down your breathing can help reverse the feeling. When you hyperventilate, you blow out your carbon dioxide more than normal and this causes physiological changes in your body that can make your hands tingle and you feel light headed. To stop this, you must try and increase your carbon dioxide back up. If you know you are hyperventilating, you can try breathing slowly into a paper bag or cupped hands and breathe deeply into your tummy more than shallowly into your chest. Concentrate on slowing your breathing and relaxing.
If panic attacks or anxiety are a recurrent problem, you should discuss with your doctor. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or similar is hugely helpful and of course you must address the underlying cause of your anxiety. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques can be remarkably useful for everyone with a busy, stressful life.
Hay fever or sensitivity to house dust mites and similar can trigger asthma in sensitive individuals. You may be aware that with the pollen calendar you suffer at certain points of the hay fever season and that sneezing and upper respiratory inflammation can worsen your asthma.
Ensure you take your antihistamine as prescribed by your doctor and any preventative and treatment inhalers during this time.
The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, breathlessness, tight feeling in chest and coughing. You can have each of these symptoms in other conditions, but if they happen frequently you must see your doctor to get a proper diagnosis. They may happen randomly or in response to pet fur or exercise, sometimes symptoms are worse at night and early in the day. The asthma is due to the airways being extra responsive and tightening or going into spasm.
A severe asthma attack needs urgent medical attention and may include; severe wheezing/coughing/tightness of the chest, being unable to speak, eat or sleep, racing heart and breathing faster, drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, fainting, blue lips or fingers
Management of asthma is by combined care with your GP, practice nurse and often local respiratory hospital team. Success is by knowing your body and your asthma and working to prevent flare ups.
A good approach is to be aware of the following points:
Have an 'asthma action plan' this will tell you what medicine to use if things worsen. You may have a peak flow diary where you measure how your airways are by breathing into a special peak flow meter at home.
Using your preventer medicine well will mean using it when you are well as it builds up protection over time
Carrying your reliever inhaler with you and knowing how much extra use means a consultation is sensible e.g. more than three times a week
Using your inhaler properly which may mean use of a spacer
Attending your annual asthma review
Having your annual flu vaccine if appropriate
Your medicine will be a combination of relievers (to treat any symptoms promptly) and preventers (to prevent flare ups).
Relievers work quickly in the lungs to relax the spasm that can occur.
Preventers usually contain a low dose of steroid medication to reduce inflammation and swelling in the lungs. You may not need one, or only need it for seasonal use or be advised to use it daily. If taking it for hay fever, sometimes it is advised to start it two weeks before your season. Because there is steroid in most preventers they can cause thrush or sore throat symptoms these are prevented by using a spacer, a good technique and rinsing your mouth with water and spitting out after use.
Inhalers can be a spray, or an inhaler where you need to inhale to activate it, or a dry powder. Your nurse will check your technique in your annual check.
Apart from obesity making every day activities a little more difficult for the body, there are many ways it can affect breathing. Extra fat around the chest and neck can make the work of breathing heavier but also put pressure on the heart and lungs in terms of the work they have to do. Extra fat may produce hormones that affect the metabolism. This can all make the feeling of breathlessness more likely.
Your doctor may examine you and calculate your BMI or measure your waist circumference. Sometimes obesity can affect sleep and breathing at night and sleep apnoea may be a problem. Losing weight and steadily increasing exercise to be at a healthy BMI and lose waist circumference can reverse this. CPAP machines at night can help prevent sleep apnoea and will often be provided after specialist consultation at a sleep clinic.
Most cases of COPD (chronic bronchitis and emphysema) are caused by smoking or rarely environmental pollutants or genetic factors. The flow of air in the lungs is limited and unlike asthma not so easily reversed. This can have a huge impact on quality of life causing chronic breathlessness
As with many other lung conditions you will usually have shared care between the GP and a specialist clinic. Lung function tests including chest x-rays, spirometry and scans will be used to assess extent and progress of your disease.
There will be a low threshold for treating any infections and you will most likely be managed with regular inhalers. Pulmonary rehabilitation really helps patients optimise their fitness and breathing techniques may be taught to help catch your breath and focus on breathing out not in which is because the body is not able to get rid of carbon dioxide so well with this disease. Simple measures like a handheld fan can help.
Acid reflux can be more common if you are overweight or have a hiatus hernia. Acid comes up the oesophagus and can irritate upper airways or trigger a response to cause an asthma-like reaction. Patients will often describe acid reflux as being worse when lying down or at night, after eating or exercising, gardening leaning forward and so on.
Losing weight can help, as can reducing stomach acid by medication such as proton pump inhibitors or antacids. A wedge shaped or extra pillow at night can help elevate the upper body and reduce reflux. At worse reflux could potentially lead to an aspiration pneumonia as an acute cause of infection and shortness of breath.
Any infection can lead to shortness of breath, whether it is a simple cold causing viral induced wheeze or sinusitis causing congestion. More severe infections can cause pneumonia which can impair the lungs ability to exchange gases across the surface and will require medical treatment and possible hospital admission. You may have a productive or dry cough alongside shortness of breath.
Your doctor will assess the whole clinical picture by asking you questions and examine your chest for signs of infection and organise investigations and treatment as appropriate.

Pulmonary embolism is a blood clot (or many clots) in the lungs and this can damage the lung, decrease oxygen levels in the blood and affect other organs. It can of course be fatal. They are often caused by a deep vein thrombosis from the leg or pelvis and these can be from trauma e.g. muscle or bone injury, being immobile (long plane ride/hospital bedridden stay) or certain medical conditions (e.g. malignancy, surgery). Other factors such as pregnancy and certain hormonal contraception can put you more at risk as can genetic factors.
This is a medical emergency and alongside shortness of breath there will also be a rapid heartbeat and possible coughing up blood and chest pain.
Various heart conditions can cause shortness of breath two-thirds of cases of breathlessness in all are actually due to cardiopulmonary causes.
Examples are heart attack, heart valve problems, heart failure, heart rhythm problems.
Symptoms may include chest pain or irregular or fast heart beat, fainting or dizziness and in cases of heart failure swelling of ankles and possible worsening of symptoms when lying flat. These are complicated scenarios that need careful clinical assessment.
Anaemia means there is less oxygen carrying capacity of the blood so it stands to reason that our breathing will increase to try and compensate so we feel as though we are out of breath. There are many causes of anaemia and these would be investigated by blood tests and other investigations by your doctor. With treatment of anaemia one would expect shortness of breath to resolve if it was the primary cause.
All of these conditions require specialised care:
Lung disease is a cause of chronic breathing difficulties and illness. Examples include;
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition causing the body to produce thick mucus affecting lungs and digestive system and requires specialist management.
Pulmonary fibrosis is a disease that occurs when lung tissue damaged and scarred and because it is thickened it makes it difficult for the lungs to function properly. Patients tend to become slowly progressively short of breath.
Bronchiectasis involves one or more of the large airways being abnormally widened allowing more mucus to collect and more chance of infection. This can occur after other infections causing damage or immune problems or certain fungi allergies. Often the cause is unknown.
If you are otherwise well but still experiencing breathlessness, the following tips may help:
Quitting smoking is a massive component of reducing lung disease, shortness of breath symptoms and preventing many diseases and causes of premature death. Talk to your doctor if you feel you cannot give up smoking alone cold turkey as there are many options that can help.
Improving your fitness levels and reducing excess weight in turn help reduce the load on our hearts and lungs and will improve any breathing problems. Start gently and listen to your body and always discuss with a healthcare professional if you have ongoing health problems and are thinking of drastically changing your lifestyle.
After a heart attack or spell in hospital for lung disease, many patients are seen by physiotherapy and rehabilitation specialists who may advise special breathing exercises to maximise lung capacity and oxygen levels. These may be good habits for dealing with mild shortness of breath at home.
Understanding any medicine for your breathing is paramount in getting you to take it and for it to work correctly. Make sure you attend medication reviews with your doctor and if something feels like it is no longer working report it to your practice or respiratory nurse.
It is important that you do not simply self-diagnose your own shortness of breath. Your clinician will make a diagnosis based on talking to you, asking some simple questions and examining you. They may also perform some investigations to get a clear clinical picture.
Types of questions your doctor will ask you in a consultation include:
When did it start was it sudden or gradual? Do you normally have an inhaler and is it helping? Do you have allergies or hay fever?
Did anything trigger it how severe it is? How far can you walk or exercise?
Have you been abroad? Have you had a fever or recent virus? Exposed to unusual infections such as TB? Long duration on an aeroplane or immobile?
Do you have any chest pain? Do you ever notice your lips or fingers going blue?
Do you have a cough? Is there any sputum or blood? Weight loss?
Are your ankles or leg swollen? Is it worse when you lie down?
For chronic shortness of breath, such as with COPD, a doctor will often use a special scale devised by the Medical Research Council to assess how your daily life is affected.

While Osbourne has yet to reveal the exact routine that led to her weight loss, her personal trainer Lacey Stone opened up to Hollywood Life about her go-to high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout.
Stones HIIT workout involves squats, lunges, deadlifts, push-ups, dumbbell bicep curl shoulder press, and tricep dips. Id recommend you do a circuit like this 2 to 3 times per week and spin class or any sort of cardio class 2-3/week, she told the outlet.
Shes also a huge fan of spinning and strength training. Spin is a great way to lose pounds, but strength training is an absolute must-have to keep your curves, Stone said. You dont want to do so much cardio that you lose definition and thats why adding a strength component is essential to a weight loss plan even though youd think it adds size; stimulating muscle will really help highlight those curves and definition.

Steven and Justin Assanti, stars of the popular TLC series My 600-lb Life, have featured on the show several times throughout the years, so fans should already be familiar with their storyline. The reality brothers remain one of the most talked-about pair of subjects to ever work with Dr. Younan Nowzaradan in the shows history, mainly due to Stevens controversial and often abusive behavior during his weight loss journey.
TLC is airing a re-run of all three of the Assanti brothers episodes starting at 6 p.m. ET tonight, so fans might be wondering where Steven and Justin are today. The description of their debut episode, titled Steven and Justins Story Part 1, reads, Steven Assanti weighs nearly 800 pounds and his brother/nemesis Justin is almost 600. Though the brothers cant stand each other, their father packs up the family to travel across the country to seek help, desperate to save both his sons lives.
The network will also be airing the Assanti brothers followup episodes following their debut episode, so fans will get a triple dose of Steven and Justin on August 12. Steven Assanti is one of the most polarizing subjects to ever feature on My 600-lb Life, as fans might well remember. Throughout his time on the show, he routinely threw fits and complained about the weight loss program, refused to follow Dr. Nows strict diet regimen, frequently binged on junk food and takeout, and manipulated Dr. Nows staff into enabling his addiction to painkillers. Dr. Now often butted heads with the reality star and finally refused to continue treating Steven until he went to rehab to get treatment for his pill addiction.
Justin Assanti wasnt nearly as combative and difficult as his brother Steven during his time on the show; hed actually been on the receiving end of Stevens bullying for most of his life, so fans had a soft spot for the reality star, who was just trying to lose weight and regain control of his life. Through some serious dedication and self control, Justin attempted to set aside his differences with his brother in order to travel to Houston to meet with Dr. Now. The brothers reunion was short-lived however; he and Steven had another serious falling out after Steven stole Justins pain killers following his weight loss surgery, which prompted Justin to quit Dr. Nows program and head back home.

Despite Stevens contentious attitude toward Dr. Nows weight loss program, he eventually started following the celebrity surgeons advice and was able to receive his gastric bypass surgery. By the end of the episode, Steven claimed his weight was around 518 pounds, although Dr. Now estimated that it was much higher than he reported. Meanwhile, Justin was able to lose over 200 pounds following his own surgery, according to his Facebook page, although he and his brother are still not on speaking terms.
Steven went on to marry a woman named Stephanie Sanger in 2018, although its unknown if the two are still together today. Her Facebook page still features photos of Steven and her profile states that shes currently married, but the most recent picture of Steven dates back to March 2019, so its unclear what the status of their relationship is today.
As for Justin, the younger Assanti brother is back in Rhode Island, currently single and is still focusing on his health and fitness, according to Facebook. He occasionally updates fans on his life today and frequently promotes his business Hobby Haven, a specialty shop that sells model kits and collectibles. According to Distractify, he and Steven still havent reconciled since their disastrous trip to Houston.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) The coronavirus pandemic closed gyms and led more people to stress eating. That has many Americans carrying a few extra pounds and looking for new clothes.
A few years ago, Lauren Wire decided to lose weight and successfully dropped 50 pounds.
When the pandemic hit, I was in full workout mode, was the lowest Ive ever been, she said.
Even with gyms shut down, Wire found ways to stay active. But she struggled to eat healthy, causing her to regain 10 pounds.
When I fluctuate, I do need to get a new pair of pants or a new shirt to fit, she explained.
Apparel brands are seeing more customers like Wire.
Raghav Sharma is with Perfitly, a company that lets consumers create avatars for online shopping.
Starting in April, the company saw a 20% spike in people changing their online measurements.
Our hypothesis is with people being locked in and not having much to do, theres a lot of eating going on. Theres a lot of stress, theres a lot of boredom, and people are getting bigger, Sharma said.
While shoppers need new sizes, theyre also making more returns, which can get pretty pricey for retail companies.
According to retail software company Narvar Inc., online returns doubled from mid-March to early June, saddling brands with more than $800 million in additional expenses.
People truly arent sure of their size, so theyre still ordering three of everything, Sharma said.
Wire can attest to that.
You know, I bought 30 bathing suits and returned 27 of them,, she said.
Wire is now working to drop the weight gained during the pandemic, and to keep it off.
