Meet the Slack of FitnessA Trainer-Led Answer to Fostering Community During Quarantine – Well+Good
When boutique fitness was still alive and well, trainers spent as much time fostering community as they did curating banging playlists and designing sweaty workouts. That is until COVID-19 and the resulting quarantine measures put businesses like Barrys Bootcamp, SLT, and Mile High Run Club on pause. Now, fitness instructors and on-demand workout apps have more of an impetus than ever before to make digitalcomradery a priority. And Ladder Teams, a workout app launched today as the Slack of Fitness, proves that (socially distanced) teamwork makes the (workout) dream work.
A subscription to Ladder Teams costs $60 per month and digitizes all of the bonding that naturally happens in your favorite yoga, spin, or HIIT studio by allowing you to pick a program taught by some of the countrys best instructors (like Jennifer Jacon of Peloton and Taylor Walker of Barrys Bootcamp) and assigning you to a team with other users who choose that same trainer. As you move through the exercise regimen workout-through-workout, youll be able to interact with the instructor and your teammates through an in-app chat room that looks a lot like a fitness-friendly Slackwhich keeps coworkers connectedand allows you to celebrate PRs, tough workouts, and great rest days in the company of others.
Folks used to go to the gym or used to go to a studio and get a group fitness experience are craving a community element that really became core to their fitness life and their fitness experience. Greg Stewart, CEO of Ladder
In a sense, quarantine turbo-charged the trend of increased community in the world of digital fitness that was already on our radar in late 2019. These sweat-centric apps are projected to grow 21.1 percent by 2026, reaching a global net worth of $10.1 billion. In late 2019, Chris Stadler, chief managing officer at Tonal, told Well+Good that making the apps themselves a social network would be the next logical next step for anyone. We know community can be a huge motivator, and our members have organically latched on to sharing their stats, favorite coaches, or programs they have completed within the group, so a natural progression would be to enable interactions within our product or via our app, he said. In the isolating, stressful wake of COVID-19 Ladder also recognized that need.
As quarantine measures ramped up, Stewart and his team saw more and more opportunity for honing the social component of on-demand fitness. [COVID-19l was just a huge lightbulb and an accelerator for us to make sure that we put all of our efforts and resources into this product, Greg Stewart, CEO of Ladder, tells Well+Good. Folks used to go to the gym or used to go to a studio and get a group fitness experience are craving a community element that really became core to their fitness life and their fitness experience. Thats just been gone for the bar with COVID, so with Ladder, were kind of bring back that social, connective tissue.
Erica Robles-Anderson, PhD, a professor at New York University who focuses on how technology creates a sense of space, looks at the interactions taking place on Ladder, Peloton, Tonal, Mirror, and more. She sees a fitness future thats part-game, part-sweaty utopia: an online gym thats first pillar is community. What you end up with is a new set of online spaces that help us feel like were doing something personal. But, at the same time, were doing it together with a new set of people who have the same set of feelings about how they want to live their lives, says Dr. Robles-Anderson. Clearly, during COVID-19, many of us want to live a life in which social fitness keeps us accountable, inspired, and ready to sweat.

When Vidya Balan revealed she was labelled as someone who brought ‘bad luck’ to the South film industry – PINKVILLA
This year, Vidya Balan will be returning to charm us as Shakuntala Devi in her upcoming film, but did you know she was once labelled as 'jinxed'.
Vidya Balan is one of the finest actors in Bollywood. Over the years, the actress has given some blockbuster hits and slipped in and out of characters with much ease. In her long career, Vidya Balan has also treated her fans with not just specific roles and characters, but gone a step further and even made risky as well as bold choices. From keeping us on the edge of the seat in Kahaani to her jaw-dropping performance in The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan's last outing at the box office was the blockbuster hit Mission Mangal.
This year, Vidya will be returning to charm us as Shakuntala Devi with a film of the same name. In the biopic drama, Vidya will be essaying the role of Shakuntala Devi, popularly known as the 'human computer'. The first look of the film has intrigued many fans. The film will also star Jisshu Sengupta, Sanya Malhotra and Amit Sadh. Give the coronavirus crisis, the film will not be releasing in theatres but instead will make its way to a streaming platform. While we cannot wait to see Vidya take on a new avatar yet again, we must realise that the actress did not always have it easy.
Turns out, the actress did not have anything going for her when she first started out in the South Indian film industry. Words such as 'bad luck' and 'jinxed' were often used for the actress and she had also opened up about same in an interview last year to Filmfare. Much before Vidya's Bollywood debut with Parineeta, the actress actively pursued a film career down South.
In fact, her first film was opposite Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and the actress evens signed for 12 projects post that. But as fate had it, the film unfortunately got shelved. As per reports, a Mohanlal film getting shelved raised much eyebrows back in the day and the actress was subsequently dropped from all films, labelling her as 'bad luck'.
Speaking about this rejection and the failure she has faced so far, Vidya once told Filmfare, "It angers you to be told that youre unlucky. Or that you arent good enough. During Begum Jaan, I harnessed all the anger I felt for all these years. I was carrying the anger of rejection, the judgement around my body, the criticism around my dressing. Ive been called jinxed down South. I rejected my body all my life. I worked hard at accepting myself. That acceptance isnt complete yet. Its still a long way. People dont understand that when you grow up a fat girl, it doesnt leave you."
Over the years, Vidya has not shied away from speaking about weight issues or maintaining a certain image just because she is a celebrity. She has often smashed these stereotypes and addressed hormonal issues she has gone through. "Ive had hormonal problems all my life. Its probably because of the judgement Ive carried around my body. When I was a teenager, people would tell me, Youve got such a pretty face, why dont you lose some weight? Its not a nice thing to say to anyone. Be it a child or a grown-up. So, Id starve myself, Id go through crazy exercise regimens and lose weight. Then the hormonal issue would settle for a bit before it reared its head again."
The actress had also revealed that she stopped looking at the montior years ago since she was dealing with body image issues. "I guess it was my bodys way of revolting because in wanting it to be what it was not, I was constantly rejecting it. Theres no machine as smart as your body. Its the only machine that has emotional intelligence. So even at my thinnest, Ive always felt fat. Weight loss, weight gain, weight loss, weight gain was my pattern for as long as I can remember. Years ago, I stopped watching my shots on the monitor at shoots because Id look at the monitor and be thinking, Am I looking fat?"
Today, the actress has come a long way since then and has become a champion of body positivity. She will soon be seen in Shakuntala Devi which releases on 31 July, 2020, on Amazon Prime.

Working off your quarantine weight gain | Health24 – Health24
Life in lockdown has led many to overeat and gain weight, a phenomenon referred to as the "Covid-15".
But some small changes can get you back into shape, a weight management specialist suggests.
"Covid-19 changed how we eat, what we eat and how we spend our day," said Dr Peter Jian, an assistant professor of family and community medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
"Unfortunately, for some of us that meant less healthy choices," Jian added in a Baylor news release.
Jian offered these tips for working off the excess pounds and returning to a healthy lifestyle:
"It's a very challenging time. But I think the best we can do is focus on the positives and focus on the things that we can control, and the things that we can do to positively influence our own health," Jian said.

As more go hungry and malnutrition persists, achieving Zero Hunger by 2030 in doubt, UN report warns – World Health Organization
Writing in the foreword, the heads of the five agencies warn that five years after the world committed to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition, we are still off track to achieve this objective by 2030".
The hunger numbers explained
In this edition, critical data updates for China and other populous countriesii have led to a substantial cut in estimates of the global number of hungry people, to the current 690 million. Nevertheless, there has been no change in the trend. Revising the entire hunger series back to the year 2000 yields the same conclusion: after steadily diminishing for decades, chronic hunger slowly began to rise in 2014 and continues to do so.
Asia remains home to the greatest number of undernourished (381 million). Africa is second (250 million), followed by Latin America and the Caribbean (48 million). The global prevalence of undernourishment or overall percentage of hungry people has changed little at 8.9 percent, but the absolute numbers have been rising since 2014. This means that over the last five years, hunger has grown in step with the global population.
This, in turn, hides great regional disparities: in percentage terms, Africa is the hardest hit region and becoming more so, with 19.1 percent of its people undernourished. This is more than double therate in Asia (8.3 percent) and in Latin America and the Caribbean (7.4 percent). On current trends, by2030, Africa will be home to more than half of the worlds chronically hungry.
As progress in fighting hunger stalls, the COVID-19 pandemic is intensifying the vulnerabilities andinadequacies of global food systems understood as all the activities and processes affecting theproduction, distribution and consumption of food. While it is too soon to assess the full impact ofthe lockdowns and other containment measures, the report estimates that at a minimum, another83 million people, and possibly as many as 132 million, may go hungry in 2020 as a result of theeconomic recession triggered by COVID-19.iii The setback throws into further doubt the achievementof Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).
Overcoming hunger and malnutrition in all its forms (including undernutrition, micronutrientdeficiencies, overweight and obesity) is about more than securing enough food to survive: whatpeople eat and especially what children eat must also be nutritious. Yet a key obstacle is thehigh cost of nutritious foods and the low affordability of healthy diets for vast numbers of families.
The report presents evidence that a healthy diet costs far more than US$ 1.90/day, the internationalpoverty threshold. It puts the price of even the least expensive healthy diet at five times the price offilling stomachs with starch only. Nutrient-rich dairy, fruits, vegetables and protein-rich foods (plantand animal-sourced) are the most expensive food groups globally.
The latest estimates are that a staggering 3 billion people or more cannot afford a healthy diet. Insub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia, this is the case for 57 percent of the population though noregion, including North America and Europe, is spared. Partly as a result, the race to endmalnutrition appears compromised. According to the report, in 2019, between a quarter and a thirdof children under five (191 million) were stunted or wasted too short or too thin. Another 38million under-fives were overweight. Among adults, meanwhile, obesity has become a globalpandemic in its own right.
A call to action
The report argues that once sustainability considerations are factored in, a global switch to healthydiets would help check the backslide into hunger while delivering enormous savings. It calculatesthat such a shift would allow the health costs associated with unhealthy diets, estimated to reachUS$ 1.3 trillion a year in 2030, to be almost entirely offset; while the diet-related social cost ofgreenhouse gas emissions, estimated at US$ 1.7 trillion, could be cut by up to three-quarters.ivThe report urges a transformation of food systems to reduce the cost of nutritious foods and
increase the affordability of healthy diets. While the specific solutions will differ from country tocountry, and even within them, the overall answers lie with interventions along the entire foodsupply chain, in the food environment, and in the political economy that shapes trade, publicexpenditure and investment policies. The study calls on governments to mainstream nutrition intheir approaches to agriculture; work to cut cost-escalating factors in the production, storage,
transport, distribution and marketing of food including by reducing inefficiencies and food loss andwaste; support local small-scale producers to grow and sell more nutritious foods, and secure theiraccess to markets; prioritize childrens nutrition as the category in greatest need; foster behaviourchange through education and communication; and embed nutrition in national social protectionsystems and investment strategies.
The heads of the five UN agencies behind the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the Worlddeclare their commitment to support this momentous shift, ensuring that it unfolds in a sustainableway, for people and the planet.

Woman claims she was evicted from St. Albans Planet Fitness over her clothing – Local 22/44 News
The Planet Fitness in St. Albans is facing scrutiny after a disagreement over the clothing a member was wearing.
On Thursday, a woman posted on Facebook that she was working out at Planet Fitness in gym shorts when she was asked to change clothes.
I entered the gym, changed, walked to the free weights and did exactly one minute of jumping jacks before an employee approached me and said multiple people had complained my shorts were too short and I needed to change
According to her post, she was told multiple people were uncomfortable with what she was wearing. But she said she was able to confirm with other people working out that they were okay with her outfit.
I turned to the 4 people working out and asked them if my shorts were intimidating. They said no. I turned back to the employees and told them that nobody is bothered by my shorts and that I was sick of being harassed for my clothing and if no one else has an issue with my shorts I wasnt leaving.
She wrote that once she did that, Planet Fitness staff told her to leave. She refused, and the St. Albans Police were called. After talking with the officers, the woman said she would change her clothes and leave.
We reached out to the woman, and the Saint Albans Planet Fitness location, they have not replied to our request for comment. The Saint Albans Police Department did respond, but told us no one was available for an interview.
The woman said she has received support on Facebook, adding that the company thrives on weakness .
I have had over 300 people from across the US and Canada reach out furious about this situation with at least a third sharing their own Planet Fitness horror stories They are all women.
