Top Fitness Industry Owners Point to Scientific Evidence, Call on Governors to Keep Gyms Open – PRNewswire

WASHINGTON, July 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Today, over 60 of America's top fitness industry leaders signed an open letter calling on all United States governors to allow gyms to remain open safely as states take action to curb the COVID-19 crisis.

The letter cites specific science-backed evidence that gyms are not the culprit when it comes to spikes in COVID-19 cases, in part due to their strong safety and sanitation protocols as they reopen. It also advocates for the mental and physical health benefits of exercising, particularly the maintenance of a healthy immune system.

BACKGROUND:

After COVID-19 caused gyms to close for several months, business owners took action to adapt and make sure that their businesses could reopen safely and responsibly by putting forward new policies and protocols that follow social distancing guidelines and enhance cleaning and sanitation practices. While most states have allowed gyms to reopen in some capacity, some states like Michigan and New York have yet to reopen gyms. Additionally, Arizona recently shut down gyms for 30 days because of a spike of COVID-19 cases although evidence did not show that the gyms were responsible for the spikes. In response to this, many of the nation's top fitness industry leaders are speaking out and calling on governors to look at scientific evidence that proves gyms are safe to exercise in.

To the Governors of the United States of America:

Health and wellness have never been more essential to our country as they are at this very moment.

We know each of you is under immense pressure to stop the spread of COVID-19 in your state. We are writing to ask that you consider scientific evidence, Americans' mental and physical health, and not shut down gyms and fitness centers that can operate safely.

As leaders in the fitness and wellness industry, we value above all else the health and wellbeing of the millions of members (and staff) who visit the tens of thousands of gyms, clubs and studios operating across the 50 states. We are equally committed to doing our part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and our members, who are health conscious, share this mindset.

Here is what we know: There is clear evidence that the fitness industry is not the problem when it comes to the spread of the virus.

Evidence shows the fitness industry is not spreading COVID-19. This past spring, we closed our facilities in good faith and based on your mandates to help flatten the COVID-19 curve. Given how little was known about the new virus, it was the right thing to do for the safety and well-being of our members and employees. We then worked within each of your states to develop stringent safety and sanitation protocols for reopening fitness locations including limited capacities, distancing mandates, sanitation and cleaning standards, face mask requirements for staff members and more.

It was also important for us to share these rigorous reopening standards with our members, who are health conscious and understand that our facilities are reopening in a safe and responsible manner.

Today, we have evidence since reopening that gyms, clubs and studios are not causing the current virus spikes many states are seeing.

In a survey of 135 clubs with 3,443,123 total check-ins, fitness industry consultant, Blair McHaney of MXM/Medallia reports that there were 0.004% of positive cases reported as of June 30.

Contact tracing in some states supports this finding. For example, while Arkansas is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, contact tracing from the state government shows 0.3% of newly infected individuals visited a gym. Additionally, new research from the University of Oslo found no COVID-19 transmissions associated with fitness centers in a randomized trial of reopened fitness facilities. (As a result, Norway reopened its gyms nationwide.)

Meanwhile... there's an absence of evidence.

It's worth noting that our industry has seen NO tracing data provided by public health officials that indicates that gyms, clubs or studios in the U.S. are contributing to the spread of the virus.

And let's not forget: Exercise strengthens immune systems

Moderate exercise has been shown time and again to help immune systems. Data shows that obesity increases the likelihood of hospitalization with a COVID-19 infection six-fold.

However, according to worldwide fitness tracker data, physical activity has decreased by 5% since the pandemic began no doubt, in part to the shutdown of gyms, clubs and studios. The millions of Americans who represent our members make a conscious decision to take care of their individual physical health by working out. They also know that exercise has emotional and mental benefits as well. These Americans are worthy of having access to the gyms, clubs and studios to take care of their health.

Combined, these data points offer clear indications that the safety and sanitation policies implemented at gyms, clubs and studios that have been allowed to reopen are effective and that these businesses may pose little to no additional risk for COVID-19 transmission compared to other public places.

Plus, we provide an essential service to help Americans stay healthy and strong. The vast majority of clubs, gyms and studios across the U.S. are small, locally-owned businesses.

They provide essential services to their members, are responsible members of their community and are safe to operate according to all available scientific evidence.

We call on you, governors, and your respective departments of health, to consider the evidence on where the virus is spreading when making decisions and allow gyms, clubs and studios to safely operate in your state. In fairness, I really cant tell if losing weight would help my brand because with or without losing weight, Im Eniola Badmus. If this works, people would just see the new body on me. However, its not going to be a total transformation because I still want to be a chubby girl; not slim. The goal is to be chubby but sexier. Maybe like losing three sizes. People should not think that I would be a shadow of who they know. Im only doing this because I want to. No matter how much we shout about body positivity, one would still have to be on a diet. One would have to watch what one eats and exercise.

I dont want to be plus-size and unhealthy. I might not work-out like fitness enthusiasts but I try to keep fit. For clarity sake, I didnt and dont bend to societal pressure. I have a very thick skin and like to do whatever suites me at any particular time. The idea is to see what I would look like afterwards. There are some clothes I feel like wearing but cant wear them till I lose weight. I still belong to the fat girls association.

That is roughly 13.7 million children and adolescents in this country that are obese. I believe many people today know obesity is a rising problem that can lead to more harmful conditions and diseases later in life. Also, I am confident many people are aware of solutions to help decrease the prevalence! However, the secret to success is not just in the knowledge, but in the action. It is not a complex formula, but it is not easy either. Living a healthy lifestyle and being at a healthy weight does not need to include a magic pill, fad diet, or widgets found on TV.

Instead of a short-term fix, it is important that we help instill long-term change as well as tools and habits that can set up children today, to be healthy adults in the future! So how can we instill healthy habits and behaviors in children?

1. Move more, sit less. Be active.

2. Food is fuel, not the enemy. Eat nutritious foods.

3. Have accountability. Make it a family endeavor.

These three bullets are very beneficial for keeping your child healthy and at a healthy weight.

Exercise daily! Move everyday and make it fun! I discourage parents, coaches, etc. from talking poorly about exercise. If you use it as punishment or as some grueling event, what do you think that young moldable mind will think about an active lifestyle? They will associate that as bad or as a punishment! Promote movement and exercise as a good thing and make it fun.

Food is fuel to our bodies and gives us energy throughout the day. Avoid using food to punish or reward your child. Instead, practice mindful eating. Mindful eating is the philosophy that you eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied. It focuses on being attentive and present when you are eating. Leave the distractions of watching TV, playing on the phone, or reading a magazine. Also, incorporate your child in grocery shopping and preparing meals. When children get to enjoy what they prepared, they will be more apt to eat it and not waste it. When preparing the meal, try to add more color to the plate by adding a serving of fruit and a vegetable.

Lastly, be an accountability partner and help your children keep you accountable also. When you can have an accountability partner, successful results exponentially increase. Do not discourage, poke fun, or insult their efforts. When one slips for a day, understand we are human and are prone to make mistakes. Rather than giving up, encourage them to get back on the wagon and work to accomplish their goal.

These strategies listed above are not groundbreaking, so why is obesity a perpetual (growing problem) in the United States?

My wife is a dietitian and I am a physical therapist. Over time we have noticed that clients that develop a support system, take in quality food (in proper quantities) and consistently exercise get better, faster! In short they take responsibility for their current state and take action.

How exactly does one help his or her child apply these practices? I believe there are a few fundamental principles that go beyond the three keys to success listed above that not only will help your childs health, but also his/her confidence and overall well-being.

1. Having a why that is bigger than that mammoth muffin in front of them. To have you and your children be successful for the long run, your why needs to be visible and on the forefront of your mind. It might be to make it on a sports team or fit into a certain dress. It might be to no longer be made fun of, or to simply be more healthy I cant pick your why, that is up to you!

For me, the decision to get healthy was multifactorial. Yes, I am saying this from experience. I was an overweight, insecure, freshman in high school. I was tired of getting picked on because of my weight. I wanted to prove mean people wrong and had a burning desire to start on the varsity hockey team as a sophomore.

My aspirations, goals, priorities in life have changed, but habits gained during that season stuck with me. I have learned to love exercise and crave many healthy foods that fuel my body. It has not always been easy, but it has been totally worth it.

Motivation will get you started, discipline will carry you through. My why was bigger than some of the initial pains of consistent exercise and saying no to sugary food.

2. I believe another important factor to overall health is a mindset shift and an attitude adjustment! I believe this develops gradually as one begins working toward their goal. It is important to develop the attitude that exercise and nutritious food is your friend and not the enemy and that your body should be respected and cared for.

In order to create a healthy mindset around physical activity and quality food choices, parents should promote a mindset for your child that says, I am a healthy person, and do the things a healthy person would do.

James Clear speaks on this in his book, Atomic Habits. If you dont know how to get healthier, ask yourself, What would a healthy person do? A healthy person would exercise today, even if it is for only a couple of minutes. A healthy person would have some fruit and vegetables with most meals and probably would say no to second helpings. Pandemic restricts Connecticuts credit card; planned projects would shatter it by $2B – The CT Mirror

As legislators fled the Capitol as the coronavirus spread through Connecticut last March, they failed to approve the annual limit on the states credit card a seemingly routine task, but one whose absence now jeopardizes billions of dollars in planned projects.

Its unclear whether lawmakers will address this oversight later this month when they return to Hartford for a special legislative session, or defer action until after the November elections. Their ability to postpone delivering the bad news ultimately hinges on Connecticuts cash position remaining strong and having other resources on hand to pay the bills.

Bluntly, we are ignoring what we know to be the reality of the current situation, Deputy House Minority Leader Vincent J. Candelora, D-North Branford, wrote recently in a letter to legislative leaders. The sooner we face reality, the sooner we can start to plan to address this enormous challenge.

Connecticut borrows billions of dollars annually for capital projects by selling bonds on Wall Street. But there is a borrowing limit and its tied to the revenues the state expects to receive each year. As expectations for tax receipts and other resources shrink, so does the debt limit.

Revenue forecasts were high when lawmakers left the Capitol on Wednesday, March 11, to allow for a four-day deep cleaning of the complex. Had the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee before it left approved a revenue schedule for the fiscal year beginning July 1, the debt limit would have been set high as well.

But lawmakers, who expected to return to the Capitol the following Monday, never came back because COVID-19 infections rapidly spread. Leaders indefinitely postponed business, and since then, state analysts have dramatically lowered their revenue projections by more than $2 billion for this fiscal year and for each of the next two.

Over three years the combined reduction approaches $7 billion, according to an April 30 report. The projections reflect the fact that more than 600,000 Connecticut residents became unemployed as the pandemic shuttered thousands of businesses or forced them to scale back operations.

Some of the revenue drop is temporary. Gov. Ned Lamont deferred income, corporation and other state tax filing deadlines from April 15 until mid-July to assist struggling Connecticut households and companies a move praised by lawmakers from both parties.

But Candelora said Connecticut, nonetheless, clearly has to scale back its borrowing now.

State law caps not only the outstanding bond debt the state can carry at any given time, but also how much new bonding legislators can tentatively schedule for future approved projects waiting in line to receive financing.

By law, when the state gets within 90% of the debt limit, the governor must craft a plan to immediately reduce planned borrowing below that threshold. If debt exceeds 100%, then all borrowing is shut down.

State Treasurer Shawn T. Wooden warned recently that were the finance committee to adopt a revenue schedule that matched the recent April 30 forecast, Connecticut would be within 99.3% of its debt limit. Lamont and legislators would need to postpone $2.2 billion in planned borrowing to get down to the 90% threshold.

Legislators routinely authorize borrowing for projects months or even years before the state actually borrows the funds to carry them out. The State Bond Commission also has to endorse a project before it is financed, and in some cases, initiatives approved by the legislature never receive funding.

But this doesnt stop lawmakers from touting the project as soon as the General Assembly gives its OK, particularly if it involves a project earmarked for a legislators home district. Nor does it stop Wall Street credit rating agencies from considering these legislative authorizations when assessing Connecticuts credit worthiness.

Wooden said Thursday that certain caution is still warranted, involving the debt cap. We continue to take careful note of the matter.

Caution is needed because Connecticut doesnt borrow money only to finance capital projects. When the states cash balance is low, the treasurer may temporarily shift bond proceeds into the common cash pool so the state can pay its operating bills. The treasurers office was forced to make several such transfers during the last recession, but Wooden has said Connecticuts cash position, to date, has been strong.

But if cash reserves run low before the November elections, Connecticut may need to borrow funds. To facilitate that, legislators first would need to reset the states debt limit. And to do that, apparently, Lamont and legislators would need to put billions of dollars worth of projects on hold at the worst time from a political standpoint.

Connecticut ranks among the most indebted states, per capita, in the nation, and debt service costs consume more than 10% of the annual budget, a problem that prompted Lamont to press for his debt diet immediately upon taking office in January 2019. To date, though, the governors fellow Democrats in the legislatures majority have balked at that diet.

Chris McClure, spokesman for Lamonts budget office, said if the legislature adopts a new schedule, and adjustments are needed, we will work with them to find the best possible solution. If that includes necessary adjustments to bond authorizations, we are able to do so at any timeincluding in the next regular session.

But Rep. Jason Rojas, D-East Hartford, who co-chairs the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, said its premature to act until Connecticut gets a clearer picture on its eroding revenues, which may take several more months.

We still dont have a clear picture of exactly where things stand, he said. Income tax and other key tax filings are due on July 15, and the state should have a clearer picture of its finances later this summer or early in the fall, Rojas added.

Rep. Chris Davis of Ellington, ranking House Republican on the finance panel, said with Connecticut and the nation sinking into recession, legislators cant plan to borrow funds taxpayers cant afford to repay.

We dont want to over-extend ourselves in an emergency situation, Davis said. We realize the economy is in a deep recession and its unclear when its going to lift. It would be unwise of us to continue to spend.

‘VPR’: Randall Emmett is ‘Working Hard’ to Lose Weight, Fans Notice and Love it – TV Shows Ace

Vanderpump Rules star Randall Emmett is getting trim and fans are taking note. The Hollywood producer is noticeably slimmer in recent photos posted to his social media. He often thanks fans commenting on his weight loss. In a recent post, he confirmed that hes been working hard on getting healthier.

The VPR star is currently in Puerto Rico with Lala Kent. While the couple are enjoying the trip, its a working vacation. Randall is making his directorial debut with the movie Midnight in the Switchgrass. Us Weekly reports that the movie is finally filming again after a short hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The movie stars heavy-hitters such as Bruce Willis and Megan Fox. Rapper-turned-actor Machine Gun Kelly is also starring in the movie. In fact, he recently began a real-life romance with his movie co-star, Megan Fox.

Randalls photos get very different comments. A recent photo of him and Lala had fans speculating that she was pregnant. Shes wearing a tracksuit in the photo, which is very suspicious to some fans.

Over the July 4th weekend, another photo of the couple got a lot of comments aimed at Randall. Several fans wrote comments about Randalls visible weight loss. He replied to one fan saying that hes been working hard on getting fit and exercising.

Randall only recently began appearing on Vanderpump Rules. Even though hes been dating Lala since 2016, it was only on Season 8 that fans got a glimpse of Randall. Before that, no one on the show was allowed to so much as say his name.

As a result, many fans didnt really know much about Randall, let alone what he looked like. Fans did get hints that he was older and heavyset from VPRs James Kennedys comments. In fact, during fights with Lala, James would often make fun of Randall, specifically his weight.

As a result, fans didnt know what to expect with Randall showing up for Season 8. However, Randalls humor and obvious love for Lala quickly made him a fan favorite. His physical appearance didnt get much attention from fans.

But his recent photos where hes slimmer are gaining a lot of attention regarding his looks. One fan compared him to a young Lorenzo Lamas from Falcon Crest fame.

In addition to winning over fans, Randall won over James Kennedy, as well. The two are close friends a year after Season 8 of Vanderpump Rules. (Season 8 began airing in January, but was filmed during the summer of 2019.)

During the final episode of Season 8, James took Randall aside to personally apologize for his nasty comments. James recently celebrated the one-year mark on his journey to sobriety. His apology to Randall was part of making amends for his drunken behavior.

Randalls weight loss may have something to do with his upcoming wedding to Lala Kent. The couple were set to marry in April, but had to push their wedding back to sometime this summer.
