High Fat Content of the Keto Diet: Is It a Health Concern? – Healthline

Though the keto diet may reduce insulin resistance and improve heart disease risk factors, other dietary patterns may be easier to adhere to.

Q: Is the high fat content of the keto diet a concern for people with certain health conditions like insulin resistance or heart disease?

The ketogenic or keto diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that many people use to promote weight loss and manage their blood sugar levels.

For example, studies show that the keto diet may aid weight loss, enhance blood sugar control, and improve heart disease risk factors like triglyceride and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. The keto diet may also increase heart-protective HDL cholesterol (1).

Additionally, the keto diet may help reduce insulin resistance, a condition in which cells become resistant to the blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels and an increased risk of diabetes (2).

Therefore, the high fat content of the keto diet might not necessarily be a concern for people with certain conditions like insulin resistance and heart disease.

However, although evidence suggests that following a keto diet may have metabolic benefits, such as reducing blood sugar and triglyceride levels, high quality, long-term studies exploring the relationship between keto dietary patterns and overall health are lacking (2).

Plus, the keto diet is highly restrictive and not typically necessary to promote weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, or reduce heart disease risk factors. In fact, less restrictive dietary patterns that focus on nutrient-dense foods and overall diet quality rather than macronutrient composition are usually a better option.

This is because keto diets are so low in carbs typically under 10% of your total calorie intake that theyre generally not sustainable long term (3).

On the other hand, the Mediterranean diet, a dietary pattern thats rich in fiber, protein, and healthy fats, has decades of scientific research supporting its ability to promote weight loss and reduce chronic disease risk not to mention good adherence scores (4).

While the keto diet may offer some health benefits, the same benefits can likely be achieved by following a less restrictive eating pattern that can be followed for life.

Keto vs Speed Keto diets – It’s not about which of them wins. It’s about your win – London Daily Post

Ketogenic diets have been surging in popularity recently among those who are comfortable with their high-fat, low-carb approach to health and weight loss. Hollywood celebrities, Silicon Valley trendsetters, and health marketers are among those promoting the low-carb, high-fat keto diet.

The keto diet is not without controversy, however. Some health practitioners feel that it cannot live up to its promises. But its recent spike in popularity shows no signs of abating in 2020, with the keto diet market now exceeding an incredible eight billion dollars in the U.S. alone.

Keto Diet Fast Facts:

How It Works

The ketogenic diet is centered around a dietary plan consisting of high amounts of fat, small amounts of protein, and low carbohydrates. It works by forcing the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. The diet was originally created to help treat severe forms of epilepsy in children; however, it has found mainstream success among those seeking to improve their health.

Under normal circumstances, dietary carbohydrates are converted by the body into glucose. In turn, this glucose travels around the body and is an important factor in providing fuel for the brain. When suboptimal amounts of carbohydrates are consumed, the liver begins converting fat into fatty acids, or ketone bodies. It is these ketones that pass into the brain and replace glucose as its energy source.

It was found that children had fewer epileptic seizures when they were on a keto diet. Almost 50% of children with severe forms of epilepsy experienced less frequent seizures when on a keto diet. It was even found that the effect remained even after stopping the diet.

Many believe that the keto diet is also effective for other types of neurological disorders, including Alzheimers disease, headaches, Parkinsons disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Rise of the Speed Keto Diet

Entrepreneur, Harlan Kilstein, is the creator of the Speed Keto diet plan. According to Kilstein, his personal interest in keto grew out of his desire to experience healthy weight loss. His public advocacy of the keto diet was marked by the publishing of his Completely Keto cookbook in 2018. He launched his Speed Keto program shortly after as a potential long-term solution for better health.

Harlan Kilsteins Speed Keto diet plan is a ready-made meal plan combined with a careful fasting schedule to produce rapid weight loss beyond what is known as the keto plateau, which is where many keto dieters hit a wall and stop obtaining weight loss results after several weeks or months on the basic keto diet.

Intermittent Fasting

Speed Keto is a hybrid diet combining the conventional ketogenic program with another type of dietary change known as intermittent fasting.

Intermittent fasting is an increasingly popular dietary plan involving no food consumption for a certain number of hours. For example, some intermittent fasting plans encourage dieters to eat only within an eight-hour window each day. This allows for 16 hours of fasting, while still eating some each day, making it far easier psychologically on the individual. Near the end of this period of fasting, the body switches into fat-burning mode. The changes forced upon the body at this time also allow the body to divert energy that would otherwise be spent in digestion into healing processes.

Some benefits of intermittent fasting include:

Gene expression: Intermittent fasting leads to functional changes in genes that help protect against many forms of disease and increase longevity.

Speed Keto vs. Regular Keto

When the body goes into fat-burning mode, it is known as ketosis. At this time, the body is focused on using fat for fuel, rather than sugar or glucose. This part of the Speed Keto diet is similar to the conventional ketogenic diet. The difference is the addition of intermittent fasting.

The goal of the Speed Keto diet is the incorporation of intermittent fasting. At some point during the Speed Keto program, dieters will be eating only one meal per day. This meal will be low in carbohydrates, contain adequate protein, and high-fat.

Keto Diet Critics

Although conventional keto diets and Speed Keto diets are extremely popular right now, the programs are not without their critics. Some doctors and health practitioners feel that the low-carb portion of the programs are unsustainable. Proponents of keto diets feel that every diet involves some level of willpower and habituation. Once dieters have spent some time with the Speed Keto plan, they tend to adapt and develop new habits that allow them to push through any temporary barriers.

Ultimately, the goal of any weight loss diet is to create a calorie deficit. Speed Keto helps people do just that. The reward comes in the form of reduced Body Mass Index (BMI) that has been scientifically proven to lower rates of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer.

Speed Keto Diet Adherents

Although the Speed Keto diet is not for everyone, practitioners of the diet provide mostly favorable reviews. Most dieters found that the diet helps increase their energy levels, boosts their mood, and changes their metabolism into fat-burning mode.

Patsy Goodell: Before Speed Keto, I had no energy and loved anything with sugar. Now on Speed Keto, I totally love it. I have energy, I sleep thru the night and I want to exercise, not HAVE to exercise.

Erin Bowman: Speed Keto gave me back what I thought I had lost. I found a whole world of possibilities in tricking my metabolism, eliminating inflammatory foods, and Im loving every minute of it.

Cathy Jelinek: Ive been enjoying Speed Keto. Recipes are easy to make and delicious! Ive also noticed extra energy throughout the day. And I must be losing inches as a couple of my pants are getting pretty baggy!! Lovin it!!

Speed Keto: The Takeaway

As with any diet, it is recommended that you first check with your primary health practitioner to ensure that you are physically able to follow a ketogenic diet like Speed Keto. Your results will depend upon your careful adherence to the diet protocols, getting adequate sleep, and shifting your body into ketosis to obtain the metabolic benefits of this innovative diet.

Nutritionist Reveals The Secret To Eating Healthy Sustainably, With Lesser Cravings – NDTV

Healthy eating tips: Practice moderation and portion control while eating

To practice healthy eating in a sustainable manner, mindful eating and a few more principles are required. Nutritionist Ishi Khosla, in an Instagram post, talks about a few principles of healthy eating that can help in maintaining your health, fitness levels and weight goals. Calorie-restrictive and weight loss diets aren't the ideal way to go. You needn't starve yourself and go to extremes just to lose a few kilos. Moderation is the key. Have you favourite dessert and even fried food at times. Maintaining a balance and eating everything you love, in controlled proportions, is the key to being healthy and fit.

In an Instagram post, Khosla talks about a few rules that can you help you live a healthy liftestyle with lesser cravings, mood swings and irritability.

Whatever you eat, practice portion control. This stands true for desserts, junk food, fried food and sugary drinks. Limit the intake of these foods to occasions only but do not starve yourself. "A small portion of dessert rather than the entire helping will be a good idea and is unlikely to conflict with your goals," writes Khosla in her post.

Maintain a balance. Avoid binging one meal but do not skip the other to make for it. "The principle of balance helps you undo the damage and lighten the next meal to compensate for the previous one, and this will ensure that you do not mess up your goals," says Khosla. You can also achieve balance by being physically active or even walking for an extra mile. Do not snack all day and eat less on meal times, recommends the nutritionist. She also adds that your diet should include fruits, vegetables and salads. "Alternate day fasting is both a traditional and scientific approach to balance out the excesses during the week," she suggests.

To be able to follow any diet plan in the long term, it is important that it has variety. Having variety in your diet also serves the purpose of giving you all the nutrients you need. Foods from all food groups should be a part of your diet. "For example, an apple is rich in vitamin E and poor in vitamin C while an orange is rich in vitamin C and poor in vitamin E. Eating both ensures that you get enough of both the nutrients," Khosla exemplifies.

Ford Government Given Failing Marks in Response to Recommendations on Long-Term Care COVID-19 Response in Joint Open Letter from more than 200…

TORONTO, June 30, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Ontario Health Coalition issued an open letter to Premier Doug Ford on May 28, 2020 calling for key improvements to safety and care in Ontarios beleaguered long-term care homes where more than 1,860 residents and staff have died as a result of COVID-19. Recent a number of media reports, accounts from families, and the military report have revealed that long-term care residents are suffering serious weight loss and decline or even dying of dehydration and malnutrition due to inadequate care. That the staffing crisis is now a full-blown emergency in long-term care is not an overstatement, reported the Coalition, which is hearing from the front-lines of workers and families of residents and is calling for immediate action.

In Quebec and British Columbia, governments have intervened to increase wages and provide full-time work to boost care levels. In recent weeks, Quebec set out to recruit 10,000 PSWs, offering $21 per hour for training and increasing wages to $26 per hour. They have more than 65,000 applicants and are well into the process. In Ontario, there has been no such response. In fact, the Health Coalition reports that it is hearing from front-line staff and families that staffing shortages are worse than ever with many more shifts unfilled even with unprecedented overtime. The Coalition held cross-province consultations on the staffing crisis in 2019 and wrote a report on its findings commissioned by Unifor in December that detailed the staffing crisis (including that virtually every home was working short every shift, worse on weekend and worse in the evenings) and made recommendations to address it. Today the Toronto Sun is reporting that the Ford governments Treasury Board twice, in the months leading into COVID-19, refused funding appeals to improve staffing levels. Staffing levels equate to care levels in long-term care: without enough staff, there is not enough time to bathe, feed, hydrate, reposition, and provide even the most basic care for residents, let alone provide care with residents and staff sick with COVID-19 and in isolation.

The Health Coalition issued the following report card today, grading the Ford government on its response to the key recommendations made in its open letter, sent a month ago, which has now been signed onto by more than 200 groups representing almost two million Ontarians. Premier Ford has not responded to the Coalitions letter despite the huge body of Ontarians represented by the groups that have jointly signed.

Weight watchers keen for gyms to reopen as lockdown has had its ups and downs – The Irish News

LIFE in lockdown hasn't been without its challenges but for many people it's been a time to reflect and reassess goals, priorities and, not surprisingly, health.

Gyms might've been closed for several months but that didn't stop plenty of fitness fanatics working out at home with the help of online body coach Joe Wicks, Zoom classes or daily walks, cycles and runs.

For some, it's been a time to clean up their diet and cook healthier meals, resulting in lockdown weight loss. But for others, too much free time on their hands, a bit of boredom and a slippery slope into bad habits like snacking on sweets or drinking wine or beer on 'school nights' has led to the pounds piling on.

The reopening of gyms in the north next week cannot come soon enough for Dunmurry dad-of-two Niall Jackson. For the last few weeks, the 31-year-old commercial sales manager has been back training outdoors at the side of Magee Health and Fitness in west Belfast but is looking forward to July 10, when it can throw open its doors to its members again.

A regular gym-goer, who trained five times a week; sometimes twice a day, Niall lost two and a half stone between September and Christmas last year. He put on a few pounds around the festive season and had been working out with a personal trainer to shift the slight weight gain, when Covid-19 hit the north and lockdown restrictions were implemented.

Furloughed from his job and living alone, Niall's motivation took a knock and he stopped training. As quickly as he'd lost the weight, dropping from 17 to 14.5 stone before Christmas, he began to put it back on in lockdown. A combination of lack of training, beer several nights of the week and frozen food and takeaways saw a stone and a half go back on.

I really went hard at it from last August/September, doing spin and circuits in the morning and boxing at night, says Niall.

I was very disciplined and lost two and a half stone, mostly through training. I'd just started with a PT from the gym when lockdown happened. To begin with, I did try and do a bit at home with dumbbells.

But training at home, indoors, on your own, just isn't the same and I lost motivation.

Dunmurry father-of-two Niall Jackson is looking forward to gyms reopening

Not wanting to join the long queues outside supermarkets, Niall stocked up on frozen food including pizza, burgers and sweet potato chips, something he'd never done before. He also indulged in takeaway food a few times a week. Unable to see his young son and daughter, he was also somewhat bored and started to drink more beer than was normal for him.

Because I was training five days a week and had the kids either Friday or Saturday, I'd only ever have a few beers on Sunday, while watching the football, Niall says. When I realised I was getting a bit bloated from the beer, I switched to gin and tonic but I didn't like feeling sluggish.

It's very easy to fall into bad habits, once the motivation is gone, and the weight just started piling on. But now I'm back at it and giving it 100 per cent, the pounds will fall off me as quickly as they went on.

Unlike Niall, west Belfast mum-of-two Eimear McKenna has never been a fan of the gym. As a child she carried extra weight and even when she played camogie and was healthy and fit, she still felt bigger than the girls in her team. After having her children, her weight steadily increased and she lost a lot of confidence. She joined a gym but felt too self-conscious and it wasn't an experience she enjoyed nor wished to repeat.

But lockdown has been a game changer for the 48-year-old, who works for the Housing Executive. When she heard that her sister-in-law Fiona Shannon, a PT who runs her own company, Shannon World Fitness, was launching a Zoom initiative Tribe 40, she signed up. Tribe 40 is an online boot camp aimed at women aged 40-plus and it ran from early May to June, over 40 days. In that time-frame, Eimear has lost a stone and a half, is feeling fitter, happier and healthier and is intent on continuing her home workouts and food plan when lockdown is over.

My 86-year-old mum moved in with us and I was looking after her, the family, working from home and I got into a bit of a rut at the start of lockdown, says Eimear. I was eating and drinking a bit more and not feeling great about that, when Seamus, my husband, told me about Fiona's online fitness venture for women in lockdown.

She had talked to other women who had put on weight over lockdown but there are those in the group who just wanted to stay active and fit when the gyms were closed.

For four mornings a week, at 7am, we all did a Zoom workout with Fiona. At the start we used tins of beans then moved on to proper weights. It was tough, she really pushed us, but it was great. And the beauty of it was that no one else could see me huffing and puffing about my own kitchen.

It didn't matter how I looked. I had it set so I could see Fiona but no-one could see me. That way, I didn't feel self-conscious.

During a weekly Zoom catch-up, the ladies in the group discussed other issues such as nutrition and calorie counting and Eimear began to cut back on portion sizes and cut out the starch and sugary snacks. As the weight started to drop off, she felt her mood lifting too. Her sleep was improved, her skin glowed and with a stone and a half off, the people around her began to notice a difference.

I know I still have a long way to go and I'd love to shift another five stone but honestly, I'm buzzing with excitement now. I'm up at 6.15 every morning, sometimes even before the alarm goes off.

I walk every day too to make up the 10,000 steps. The Fitbit's on the moment I get up.

The whole group went for a walk up Black Mountain last week and yes, I'm the heaviest among us all but it doesn't matter to me now. We're all on our own journey. For me it's about losing weight and getting my confidence back and I'm getting there.

As well as shifting a stone and a half, Eimear has lost 27 inches all over and dropped a dress size. But it's the impact on her mental health and wellbeing that her loved ones are commenting on too. While working out, she forgot to take medication prescribed for anxiety but her mood was so chilled, she didn't even notice at the time.

When Tribe 40 finished, Fiona sent me my own workouts to do because I didn't want to lose the momentum, Eimear says. She's starting up the Zoom group again on July 13 and I can't wait to get back at it.

We're off to Donegal for a break and usually, we'd be eating and drinking all round us but I'm sticking to the plan and bringing my weights with me.

I feel better than I have in such a long time. Lockdown gave me the opportunity to start working on myself and for me, fortunately, it's been such a positive experience.

Katie Price hopes her autistic son Harvey, 18, dies before her because he wouldnt be able to ‘cope without me – MEAWW

Katie Price has opened up about her relationship with her autistic son as she admitted that it is her love for Harvey that kept her alive during a rehab stint earlier this year. The 42-year-old also said she hopes she will outlive her son as he wouldnt cope without her. The statement of Prices came after the 18-year-old was admitted to hospital this week after complaining of chest pains. Though the teenager is back at home now, the incident has left Price terrified since doctors told her that Harvey is at high risk of dying from a heart attack if his weight isn't reduced. The eldest child of the former glamour model weighs more than 27 stone (378 pounds) due to an excessive appetite caused by the genetic condition, called Prader-Willi Syndrome.

When Harvey went into the hospital, I feared the worst. I always do. The doctors have told me hes at high risk of having a heart attack. Hes 27st, wears 5XL clothes and he gets out of breath walking up the stairs. So of course, I panicked. I cant see him living past 50 unless we sort his weight and his breathing out, Price told The Sun as she added: I know its horrible to say, but I wish hed go before me because he wouldnt cope without me. Hed be so heartbroken and wouldnt understand where Id gone.

Price, who is also mother to two daughters 13-year-old Princess Tiaamii, and Bunny, five, and sons Junior, 15, and Jett, six, went to a rehabilitation center, The Priory, in January this year after accepting that she was self-medicating with alcohol and cocaine. She said that it was the thought of Harvey only that did not let her take any extreme step. The doting mother said: I could have gone off and hanged myself, which I wanted to do, but I didnt because I have kids.

I know its a harsh comment but its the truth. If I ever died, my other kids, obviously, would be heartbroken but Harvey would not understand where Id gone. And I just think no one would look after him the way I do, and he wouldnt understand why Im not there. The thought kills me. I hate it. I dont know whats going to happen in the future.

Price also talked about her sons admission to the hospital as she said she had a feeling that something was wrong with Harvey. The media personality said her partially sighted son was not behaving normally. However, when he complained about needles in his chest that Price called an ambulance. I know hes getting bigger and Id noticed in the past month his breathing had changed. It was at Princesss birthday party, just after shed done her cake and Harvey wasnt feeling himself and had a lie-down. And then he was getting worse and worse and I thought, Oh s**t, Price continued. Sometimes hell fake things like if he doesnt want to go to school, hell say Harvey feels wobbly, or hes got a sore throat. But I know him well enough to know if hes trying to pull a fast one or not. He said he was getting pains, and he can deteriorate quickly, so I just used my common sense, stayed calm, and called the ambulance.

After being admitted to the hospital, Harvey was diagnosed with fluid in his lungs and a chest infection. He was discharged the same night. But for Price dealing with his complex medical conditions is getting harder day by day. I love him, and I would never change him, but its constant. Its exhausting. He knows hes got to lose weight but its the Prader-Willi he just wants to eat. Hell steal food, and hes on steroids that make him big. We try everything, but cutting down food is hard, she stated.

Price added: Im not trying to give him a lot of food look at my other kids, theyre not big and fat like Harvey. I dont want him to be in 5XL clothes, or to not be able to go on proper walks without being out of breath. I dont want that, I come from a fit, healthy family. People dont appreciate how big he is until they see him. He cant fit in some cars, and on an aeroplane, the seatbelts dont fit him.

Meanwhile, it has been said the Price along with his eldest son is filming a BBC documentary, called Harvey And Me, about living with him in lockdown. The documentary will reportedly show the mother-son duo daily life and the struggles Price faces as a single mum to her disabled son. It is bloody difficult. Its a constant worry, and I worry about the other kids too. I think people will be shocked when they see what living with Harvey is really like. Im both his mum and his carer and I dont even ask for sympathy, but it is hard work, Price said.

The Life Time fitness chain will reverse course and shut down the indoor fitness portion of its Arizona locationseffectiveimmediately, butMountainside Fitness, which confirmed Friday that some employees have tested positive for COVID-19,remains open.

The two chains wereamong several fitness chainsin Arizona that announcedthey wouldn't follow Gov. Doug Ducey's Monday order to close gyms until at least July 27 in an effort to stem the spread of COVID-19. Both gyms remained open through Friday morning.

Now, Life Time plans to shut down the fitness floors, studios and gymnasiums at their Arizona locations through Monday evening, the statement said, adding that all other services and amenities at their clubs, including the salon, spa, food services and pools, will remain open.

The decision to close the indoor fitness areas in Life Time clubs comes one day after Arizona suspended a third liquor license associated with a Life Time Fitness location.

Life Time officials met with the Governor's Office and the director of the Arizona Department of Health Services Friday morning and "out of respect for the governor" decided to close the gyms soon after, according to the statement from Life Time officials.

The Arizona Department of Health Servicesalso announced they are partnering with Life Time to "develop examples of best practices."

Life Time Fitness complying with the Governors Executive Order is in the best interest of all Arizonans, said Dr. Cara Christ, director of the state health department, in a statement. We appreciate their willingness to protect Arizonans and provide their time and subject matter expertise.

Minneapolis-based Life Time spokeswoman Natalie Bushaw said the time will allow time for officials to meet with the governor's team to identify solutions to re-open the indoor fitness portion of their clubs as soon as possible.

"The governments should work with each industry to unveil the safest protocols to conduct business," Bushaw said, listing capacity limitations, mask requirements and temperature checks as possible safety measures. "Businesses who do not comply with these agreed-upon, robust safety and cleaning protocols should be shut down immediately and assertively."

Bushaw again defended the health and safety of Life Time fitness clubs Friday, saying health clubs and gyms are able to operate more safely than other businesses.

"Life Times safety protocols are beyond that of any other business," a statement from Life Time CEO and Founder Bahram Akradito Life Timemembers read Friday."Once the health department has the opportunity to review what youve been experiencing every day, we believe they will come to the same conclusion."

Akradi also called on Life Time members to contact Ducey via Twitter, email or phone and ask him "to keep your clubs fully open to you and your devoted team members."

Mountainside Fitness, meanwhile, is not changing course.

Mountainside Fitness CEO Tom Hatten said Friday their gyms will stay open through at least Monday morning, when an emergency hearing on Hatten's legal complaint against Ducey's executive order is scheduled in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Hatten said Mountainside Fitness locations will close Monday if the court does not rule in his favor.

Hatten confirmed some employees have tested positive for the virusbut did not provide details about how many or at which locations. Members at the facilities with COVID-19 positive employees have not been notified, he said.

"This wasn't about the coronavirus anymore," Hatten said. "It became about everybody. It became about our government, our leadership. It became about thebusinesses community. It became about who's next."

Hatten maintained his position that the fitness industry was singled out in Ducey's order, saying he felt his business is being "vilified" while others are not receivingthe same type of attention.

"I wanted accountability from our leaders," Hatten said. "And if that meant I'm going to be fined or could end up in jail, there's been plenty of great Americans who have been in this position beforeI'm OK with that."

The Arizona Department of Health Services said it will move forward with efforts to enforce the governor's order against Mountainside Fitness "to protect the public health and welfare against the serious threat posed by COVID-19."

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) It was an early morning for a local group of veterans. They celebrated the countrys independence by joining together for a fitness challenge.

Everybody is doing this together, everybody is in this working together, fighting isolation, fighting the sense of desperation, John Bond, state coordinator for Team Red, White and Blue, said.

As the clock struck 7 a.m., a group of over 20 veterans from Team Red, White and Blue gathered at the Independence Hall and did burpees as a group.

The fact that were able to do this, to come together, a sense of community, a sense of connection, a sense of positivity, it motivates us, Bond said.

Its the best, its what we do and its what Team RWB is all about, Keith Wittstock, the Philadelphia chapters captain, said.

With so much turmoil going on in the country right now, these vets say this is the perfect way for them to unite.

Its an opportunity to bring a sense of community. A lot of us veterans, its easy to become isolated with the social unrest thats going on, Bond said. Weve lived through this. Weve seen this happen for some of us while deployed or at home.

Saturdays event is part of their #1776Challenge, where they push each other each day to be better.

While theyve held virtual workouts, Saturday morning was the first time many of these veterans have been together since the start of the pandemic.

They did 76 burpees the number is symbolic of the countrys founding in 1776.

But the movement is also symbolic. When you fall down, you find a way to get back up.

Whether were veterans or civilians, anything that we can do to help out veterans and what theyve done for our country is what Team RWB is all about, Wittstock said.

With gyms closed and at-home workout equipment sold out, fitness lovers get creative – Yahoo News

With many gyms closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, WFH is making way for WOFH: Working Out From Home.

I use a lot of makeshift materials to work out, says Anne Barreca, of Brooklyn, New York. Without access to a gym or swimming pool, she uses whats in her environment for exercise, including the stairs leading to her third-floor walkup, groceries, resistance bands, furniture sliders, dish towels even her 5-month-old son, Benjamin, whom she calls the worlds cutest kettlebell. Hes the perfect size for squats and lunges (comes with the noises too, her husband, Brian, jokes).

Its better than nothing, Barreca said. Something is always better than just being lazy or sitting around. There's no such thing as a perfect workout.

Exercising using ones body weight or with whats available, of course, isnt a new phenomenon.

In 1976s Rocky, the underdog boxer trained by punching slabs of beef in a meat freezer and running up the 72 steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1982, Jane Fonda donned spandex and leg warmers to bring her total body aerobics routine, Jane Fondas Workout, to women around the world. It sold over 17 million copies, becoming the best-selling VHS tape of all time.

In that same spirit, fitness enthusiasts are discovering new ways to work out and get back to basics in the age of COVID-19.

For Barreca, finding creative hacks to get moving and accepting this new normal wasnt easy. Being an avid runner and swimmer, she continued her exercise regimen well into her pregnancy and was eager to get back to her routine after giving birth. As fate would have it, her doctors gave her the all-clear to resume working out on March 16 the day gyms and pools closed in New York. It was like a cruel joke, she says.

But she didnt let the gym shutdowns, or that shes parenting a newborn during a pandemic, discourage her.

It forces you to tap into the inner reserves you have of patience and creativity, Barreca said. I love gyms as much as anyone. I hope I get to go back, but its not a necessity for maintaining your fitness, which is a very beautiful reminder.

Story continues

In Largo, Florida, Shani Bryant says she has also learned this lesson while sheltering-in-place and working from home. Her pre-COVID workout group consisted of fellow fitness enthusiasts in her office, all moms, who worked out together every day during their lunch hour, from weight training and HIIT (high intensity interval training) to spin class. They even wore matching shirts and drank the same pre-workout supplement.

It was legit, like a sisterhood, Bryant said.

And while they all tried to keep up that sisterhood when they began working from home, exercising together online via Microsoft Teams, Bryant says she eventually started getting busier and working through lunchtime. She also pointed out that not everyone in the group has the same equipment or resources at home.

All the weights were sold out in the stores, so I couldnt find any barbells or kettlebells, Bryant said. Between January and March, orders for fitness equipment (kettlebells, dumbbells, stationary bikes and treadmills) saw a 55 percent boost in online sales, according to Adobes Digital Economy Index.

Despite those challenges, and sometimes missing the rigor of her old gym workouts, Bryant says shes giving herself some grace and putting less pressure on herself to maintain her old routine. Though shes visited the gym twice since reopening, with social distancing measures in place, she says its difficult to work out in a mask and shes unsure about going back, as cases in Florida continue to rise. She tells herself: Relax, youre in a pandemic. Its OK if you cant lose those other 10 pounds that you were trying to do before your birthday. Its OK.

She says she has learned to appreciate slower workouts, such as long walks outside with her 3-year-old son.

He loves chasing the birds, riding his bike, looking at all the trees, Bryant said. Now were definitely outdoors and exploring a little bit more, which is nice.

Stacey Tinianov, in Santa Clara, California, has also been forced to slow down. A mom of two teens and a cancer survivor, Tinianov was attending 5 a.m. classes at a nearby Orangetheory fitness studio four days a week and when she didnt make it to a class, she went to 24 Hour Fitness in the evenings to work out on the elliptical. On weekend mornings, she would go on three- to four-hour walks with friends or do a tandem bicycle ride with her husband.

Now, with fitness centers closed, her family has created some new habits.

Every morning, we get up, I go on my walk and he commutes to work, Tinianov said about her husbands daily bike ride. And so he does this 20-mile loop, comes home, showers and then goes to the garage and works all day.

But she admits its challenging to exercise outside and do the constant calculus of social distancing.

It's really weird to walk in a neighborhood because you'll see people and you're like: OK, who should walk in the street? Who should stay on the sidewalk? Who needs to cross the road? Tinianov said. It doesn't feel relaxing, because you're constantly trying to gauge what you should do and it just seems to be a lot involved now in kind of calculating it, rather than just going out for a walk.

Although she hasnt been able to recreate Orangetheory at home (the app doesnt translate the same vibes as an in-person workout, she says), a small silver lining has been finding new activities she tried a zumba class for the first time over Zoom and she started doing some yoga thanks to YouTube. She also completed a four-week exercise challenge, Chloe Tings Summer Shred Challenge, with her 19-year-old daughter.

I definitely would not have done yoga online, Tinianov said. I just wouldn't have. And I don't know why I tried it this time, but I'm glad I did. I like it. I find it incredibly calming.

More walking and yoga matches up with how Fitbit users are working out during the pandemic, according to a recent Fitbit analysis that looked at data from mid-April.

Walk exercises, or brisk walks that last for at least 15 minutes, are up, and walks still constitute a large portion of user exercises, the analysis said. Weve also seen substantial increases in the popularity of biking, yoga and aerobic workouts. Among users who exercised at least once per week, yoga and biking have seen an increase of over 40 percent, while aerobic workouts have increased by more than 20 percent meaning that users are taking this time to switch up their fitness routines.

When it comes to exercising during this new normal without access to old routines and resources, the key is motivation, said Dr. Sari Shepphird, a sports psychologist and psychotherapist in California.

It takes some creative thought, which is why motivations so important because if you're lacking the motivation, you're not going to want to put in the time to creatively problem solve, Shepphird said.

She suggests finding a sense of community, even virtually, if possible. Coaches and trainers online are trying to do just that, even with exercises that might typically require physical contact.

Joey DeMalavez, owner of Joltin Jabs in Philadelphia, just reopened his boxing gym, but is continuing some virtual sessions. At one point during Pennsylvanias stay-at-home order, he was leading 11 Zoom classes per week. Known for his discipline and a stickler for form, the former pro boxer had to adapt technologically to continue reaching his clients. He says while he cant be there physically to adjust their form, doing the workout with them and yelling through his computer screen has been working pretty well.

I won't call them out by name but as I'm looking, I'll say, Put that hand up, DeMalavez said.

I remind them, Remember that checklist, check it off, chin down, shoulder pointed, hands up, knees bent, balls of your feet, 45 your front foot. So I'm constantly going like that.

It can be harder to read the room when clients are in different places with their mics often muted, says Tasha Gray, co-owner and a trainer at FitnessSocial, a studio in Fresno, California that recently resumed in-person sessions. You just learn to make it work, she said.

During months of remote sessions, Grays studio went ahead and gave away or rented kettlebells to clients depending on their membership level.

For Amber Patty, a personal trainer and gymnast in Salt Lake City, online classes have meant more clients and a broader reach. With Upside Down Ambo, she blends body weight exercises with gymnastics movements, and even teaches classes on how to do a handstand.

Theres ways to train people without being there, Patty said. If somebody can't kick up to a wall, I have ways to get them upside down and get them strengthened and get them to a place where they can kick up without being there. ... There definitely is a benefit if I'm right there, but there are camps and classes where the teacher has like 20 people and they just can't really help everyone. So it's still helpful, and I've seen a lot of progress with my clients through Zoom with the handstands.

And as Americans spend more time indoors or socially distantanced, whether youre working out or just trying to survive, Shepphird recommends fighting anxiety or whats the point? thoughts by using tips and tricks from sports psychology.

This is a lot about mindset, Shepphird said. To identify what youcan control, and then focus on putting your effort there is going to make a big difference in the quality of your life on an emotional and mental level. And then another skill that's often used in sport is mindfulness To be aware of what it is that you're experiencing and not judge yourself for whatever it is that you feel, but to just observe it. Not be afraid of your own thoughts, but to allow them to come and then problem solve once you realize what it is that you're feeling.

To say fitness habits are changing is an understatement, Shepphird says. People are working out in new ways and with new frequency.

Tinianov is embracing more family time and different ways to move. Barreca, who used to spend one or two hours on the perfect workout, now does multiple mini-workouts throughout the day while her baby naps. When she does jog, she pretends her mask is a VO2 max increaser because thinking of it as a pandemic mask is sad and thinking of it as a way to increase VO2 max makes it slightly mentally easier. Bryant, who still keeps in touch with her workout crew, has delved into healthier cooking and gets outside more.

Maybe our bodies needed this break, Bryant said. Maybe this is a time we needed to take a break and rest our bodies, rest our minds a little bit, regroup and just use this time wisely.
