The rise and untimely fall of Fred ‘the Tin Man’ Archer – Past The Wire

Emma Hayward and William Archer welcomed their second son, Fred Archer into the world on the 11th January 1857. Born in Cheltenham, it was not surprising that he grew up to become a jockey; his father, older brother and later, younger brother, were all jockeys. It could be said that horse racing was in his blood from the moment he entered the world.

15 years before Fred was born, his father William won the worlds greatest steeplechase, the Grand National in 1842 on Little Charlie.

When Fred was 2, the family moved to Prestbury, where his father became the landlord of the Kings Arms pub. Fred learnt to ride at a young age and by the time he was 8 years old, young Fred was already riding in pony and donkey races.

The start of something special

Now the home of Sir Mark Prescott, Heath House in Newmarket is where Fred was apprenticed to Matthew Dawson when he was just 10 years old. The Dawsons had no children of their own, so took on Archer as their own when he was bullied by other lads at the stable

At just 12 years of age, he rode in the Newmarket Town plate and a year later in 1870, won his first race under Jockey Club rules at Chesterfield racecourse on Atholl Daisy. Weighing just 4stone 11lb (67 lbs) as a child, Fred ultimately grew to be 5ft 10 and hit 11stone (154 lbs) during the winters.

1872 saw his first big win, aboard Salvanos in the Cesarewitch; Fred weighed just 5 stone (70 lbs); this was the year his apprenticeship ended. Tom French was the leading stable jockey for Dawson, however he became ill in 1873 which led to Fred receiving more rides and riding 107 winners that year, coming second in the jockey championship to Harry Constable. Heartbreakingly, French died later in the year due to the excessive wasting demands of being a jockey.

1874 was a turning point for Archer, when he achieved his first classic win in the 2,000 Guineas aboard Atlantic; that same year he became retained jockey for Lord Falmouth, whom he would go on to win over half his classics for.

In 1875, he completed the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks double on Spinaway. Two years later aboard Silvio for Lord Falmouth, he won his first Derby and then went on to win the St Leger.

One of Archers favourite horses, Wheel Of Fortune, won the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks in 1879 and went on to win the Yorkshire Oaks. She was going to go for the UK Triple Crown but unfortunately the horse broke down going for her second race at York just two days later.

Unhealthy lifestyle

Even now, jockeys have to waste to reach the correct weight in a race. At 5ft 10, Freds weight started to become a problem, he already had to diet a lot more than his fellow jockeys to maintain his racing weight of 8st 10lbs (122 lbs). This was ultimately the start of a tragic downward spiral.

His low weight was aided by Turkish baths and shockingly, Fred tended not to eat solids and used alkaline medicines to purge, made up by a doctor in Newmarket.

A poor walker and unable to run, he was unable to lose weight through exercise, which exacerbated his unhealthy habits to lose weight. When he ate, his diet consisted of: half an orange, a sardine, a nip of champagne or castor oil, a biscuit and a small champagne at lunchtime.

Success and heartbreak

Archer came from behind on Bend Or to beat Robert the Devil in the 1880 Derby by a head, mading the gutsy move to go along the rails to grasp success. Dutch Oven won the St Leger in the same year and there was much controversy that Fred had pulled the horse in the Yorkshire Stakes to get better odds for this race, however this was said to be unfounded.

Marrying into the family that welcomed him with open arms, Archer married his trainers niece, Rose Nellie Dawson in January 1883 in Newmarket. A brilliant firework display lit up the night sky on their wedding day with the words May they be happy; a statement that would soon go on to prove false.

In January of 1884, Fred and Roses son, William, died at birth. He was named after Freds brother who tragically died in a hurdle race at Cheltenham.

Getting pregnant again in November 1884, Rose gave birth to a daughter called Nellie; Fred found out by a telegram message after riding Thebais to victory in the Liverpool Cup. Thought to be the result of post-natal eclampsia, Nellie started convulsing and passed away after the birth of their daughter.

The Tin Man triumphs

He was nicknamed the The Tin Man due to his love of money.

Fred made lots of shrewd investments with most of his money but had also squandered around 250,000 by the time of his death. It is said he asked bystanders for coins to put in his breeches to increase his riding weight when he was short of money for the race, but never returned the money.

Falmouth Lodge and Stables, now known as Pegasus Stables was built by Archer in 1882.

1885, the year after his wifes death was ironically Archers most successful year in the saddle; he went on to win the 2,000 Guineas on Paradox, the Oaks on Lonely, the Derby and the St Leger on Melton, followed by the Grand Prix de Paris on Paradox. In his final season, he won the Derby and St Leger on the superstar Ormonde.

He Finished the year on 246 winners, this record remained unbroken until Gordon Richards in 1993, over a hundred years later! Over his short career, Archer won five Derbys, had 21 classic wins and overall won 2748 races in 8084 races.

He was Champion Jockey between 1874 and 1886, an incredible feat considering his young age.

Untimely death

In October of 1886, Archer needed to lose 6lbs over 2 days in for what would turn out to be his first and only ride over in Ireland, on Cambusmore for Lord Londonderry in the Lieutenants Plate at The Curragh, a race he won with great ease.

After this success and returning home, he wasted down to 8st 7lb for the Cambridgeshire, he went 3 days without food. He fell ill and had to return home, where he had a very high fever.

On the 8th November 1886 he was at his home, Falmouth House, in Newmarket under medical supervision. His sister visited him at about 2:25 and he asked her to send the nurse out of the room, which turned out to be a fatal mistake; whilst she was looking out the window, he jumped out of bed and asked her Are they coming?. With a gun in his hand, he put it in his mouth and fired the revolver. The bullet passed out through his neck, and he tragically died bleeding in his sisters arms.

An inquest into his death was held, where it was stated The deceased committed suicide whilst in a state on unsound mind. Archer was just 29 years of age. His death was attributed to the death of his wife two years earlier, wasting, and possibly due to the fact he had 30,000 of debt.

He had previously spoken to his friend about his late wife saying She was taken away from me at the very moment that my happiness did really seem to me to be so great and complete as to leave nothing else in this world I could really wish for.

A fortune of 66,662 was left for his daughter Nellie, which would be around 7 million pounds in todays money.

You can see some of his personal affects in the National Horse Racing museum in Newmarket, which includes the gun he shot himself with! He was buried in Newmarket Cemetery and his burial plot can be found to the right of the chapel.

It is said that his ghost rides a light grey horse over Newmarket Heath.

How the diet started Dr. Simeons, MD.

Dr. Albert Simeons was a world-renowned endocrinologist recognized for his pioneering work in tropical diseases. He was awarded the Red Cross Order of Merit for his advancement in the research and treatment of Malaria and honored for a number of research-breakthroughs. While working with severely malnourished women in India, Dr. Simeons discovered a link between the Hcg hormone, and its ability to utilize stored fat to nourish and deliver healthy children. After years of research, he was able to develop a protocol that utilized this effect of Hcg, to treat obesity, and published the groundbreaking manuscript, Pounds and Inches.

Here are a few basics for those who are ready to jump right in and start with the plan immediately. With these simple articles, you can easily get started today. Take note however, that anyone new to the plan, should read through this guide thoroughly, and NEVER proceed with the protocol without consulting a physician (FDA approved telemedicine Hcg programs are listed below.)

The Hcg Diet is a medical weight loss plan, and should ONLY be prescribed and overseen by a licensed medical doctor. While it can be challenging to find a local physician that specializes in Hcg hormone therapy, there are a few options available online, through FDA-approved telemedicine companies in the USA. These sources provide complete prescription Hcg kits for injections, drops and tablets/pills/pellets, and provide expert guidance throughout the duration of treatment.

Preparing for the plan, is absolutely essential and should not be skipped. Much like building a house, you want a solid foundation and to be prepared for the steps and challenges that come along with the protocol. Each phase is extremely important and should not be skipped. The Loading Phase (P1) is 2 (in some cases, 3 days,) while Phase 2, the weight loss phase, can vary in length depending on your protocols specifics. For example, one Hcg sources protocol can differ from another such as 26 days or 29 days. Phase 3, the Transition Phase, lasts 3 weeks and is an expansion of increased calories and foods that do not include any sugars or starches. The 4th phase refers to life after the diets first 3 phases and includes a lifestyle of healthy choices learned while on the protocol. This includes exercise, portion control, clean eating and healthy living in general.

The HCG Diet Protocol consists of separate phases. Together, they are referred to as a round. Dieters typically lose 18 to 25 lbs per round (approximately 1 month.) If more weight is needed to be lost, there is a 3 week break after the final phase, and thenanother round is started. Rinse and repeat until goal weight is reached.

HCG Diet protocols include the following4 phases. Note on protocol variations: Some protocols actually include 3 and 4 as the same Maintenance phase and have only 3 phases total. Other protocols, including Dr. Simeons Original protocol, do not include phase 1, loading phase. This can be a personal preference, however we will say that the following phase example, has shown great results from our readers, and has certainly appeared to be the most successful.

Phase 1 is the loading phase. Also known as the preparation phase. This phase is not on all HCG Diet protocols but it is on most and is very popular. During this two day phase, the dieter eats as much healthy fats as possible in preparation for starting the next phase. They are also welcome to eat as many cheat foods as they would like, with the intention of satisfying cravings prior to beginning the next phase where these foods will not be allowed. Read more

Phase 2 of the HCG Diet is the weight loss phase. This begins on day 3 of taking HCG where the dieter adheres toa specifiedcalorie intake and carefully selected food list. For most dieters, this is the most challenging phase of the plan because there is very little room for error. Read more:

Phase 3 of the HCG Dietis at the end of HCG is discontinued and the same foods from phase 2 are still eaten, but increased slowly. In this stage, this is areintroduction period where calories and foods are slowly adjusted to maintain weight loss. Read more:

Phase 4 of the HCG Diet is the phase of continuing weight maintenance for life-long health and fitness.This is an essential part of the HCG diet and it actually begins during Phase 2. This is where you will begin to build the skills necessary for lifetime weight maintenance and healthy living. For example; reading labels as a habit (this will become 2nd nature and shouldntstop once you reach your weight loss goals. Also, portion control and learning to listen to your body. Hcg weight loss foods and recipes are the backbone of the Hcg weight loss program. Not only do the allowed foods help you to lose weight, but they also help get our body into a healthy state.

It is important to understand that while the Hcg hormone does NOT make you lose weight, it does change how your body loses weight, and creates a reaction in your body that allows for the rapid weight loss. In a nutshell: The Hcg Diets strict eating guidelines focus on portion control, increased vegetables and proteins, and a food list that is comprised of clean, unprocessed foods.

Over 200 Gym Patrons Potentially Exposed To Coronavirus At Planet Fitness In West Virginia – CBS Pittsburgh

MORGANTOWN, Wv. (KDKA) Health officials are warning hundreds of people who went to a Planet Fitness in West Virginia that they may have been exposed to the Coronavirus.

The news comes after the Monongalia County Health Department says one client at the gym tested positive for COVID-19. Anyone at the Planet Fitness from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 24 is asked to quarantine at home and monitor any symptoms for two weeks.

Health officials estimate 205 people were at the gym within that span of time.

Planet Fitness announced that it has closed the gym temporarily, which is expected to reopen on Tuesday at 6 a.m. They say a third party cleaning crew will disinfect the facilities prior to the reopening.

Out of an abundance of caution, our Morgantown location has been closed for an additional deep cleaning by a third party

Feather River Fitness reopens to members July 1 – Plumas County Newspapers

Feather River Fitness is set to reopen July 1 with new sanitation rules, temporary hours and regulations in place for its members.

Staff has worked to ensure that the facility is properly equipped with everything needed to provide a safe and clean environment.

Peloton and Planet Fitness called long-term winners – Seeking Alpha

Wedbush sees room for both Peloton Interactive (NASDAQ:PTON) and Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT) to work out over the long term for investors.

"We believe that both PLNT and PTON will be long-term winners in the fitness space, in that as brick-and-mortar clubs shrink and consolidate, both companies will get their fair share of customers looking for alternatives. However, while PTONs addressable market has inarguably expanded as a result of the pandemic, PLNTs has likely contracted somewhat, as a certain segment of the non-exercising population (PLNTs primary target demographic) is likely to be more hesitant to consider a gym given increased concerns surrounding viruses and germs. Meanwhile, a proliferation of at-home fitness options, as well as growing awareness of these options, cannot help but shrink the population of those seriously considering joining a traditional gym," notes analyst James Hardiman.

Wedbush lifts its price target on Peloton to $63 from $50 after seeing strong data. "While the meteoric growth in Google search volume for Peloton has decelerated somewhat, it remains at 2x last years volume, suggesting the company has a considerable runway for outsized growth," reports Hardiman. Meanwhile, he sees the "flattish" net membership growth at Planet Fitness as good news for shareholders amid the COVID-19 anxiety.

Shares of PTON are up 0.33% premarket and PLNT is 1.30% higher, although the gap for the year is quite large.

New York Mills, N.Y. - We did a story here at WKTV on Saturday about the owner of CrossFit PSE, a gym in Herkimer, who says he was given a cease and desist order on Friday by the State of New York for holding an outdoor fitness class.

Here on Sunday we are doing a story about another gym holding its first outdoor workout, Sunday morning, and the owner there says he believe he is allowed to hold these types of classes.

That gym, the Fitness Mill in New York Mills. Owner Alex Carbone says he believes outdoor classes are allowed, "Ive been in constant contact with the state, Consumer Services, and they gave me the heads up that gyms are not in fact Phase 4. Within the next week or week and a half, we'll receive a new list of guidelines for gyms. But I did ask the specific question, is an outdoor group fitness permitted, and in fact it is. We are practicing social distancing."

We tried contacting the Governor's office on Sunday to get clarification on whether group fitness classes are actually allowed, but so far have not received word back.

About 30 people filled the parking lot of the Fitness Mill Sunday morning for their first group workout in 3 1/2 months, and that's many more people than the owner of CrossFit PSE says he had during his class, which he says resulted in him being handed a cease and desist order by two state agents on Friday.

When we asked CrossFit PSE owner Tony Licari on Sunday about the Fitness Mill holding their outdoor class, he says he has no idea what's going on, "There's no clear cut answers to what we can and cant do, it's ridiculous."

Be your own Amazon! Nike’s new fitness program depends on more focused online-to-offline retail integration – and its own digital marketplace -…

Back in March, as COVID-19 was making its presence felt in Western economies, Nike CEO John Donahoe pointed to the firms experiences in China to provide an omni-channel playbook on how retailers could recover from lockdown.

Flash forward to today and after having 90% of its non-China stores shuttered for most of the past three months, resulting in a $790 million loss, the talk now is of an accelerated strategic shift to a different digital model than the one in place at the start of the year:

We're seeing a true step function change in our digital transformation. This has been an area of investment over the past few years as we build our digital advantage, butCOVID-19 has accelerated the paceNike is in a position to emerge from theCOVID-19 pandemic even stronger due to our Consumer Direct offensive. The global pandemic has made it clear that consumer behavior is changing rapidly, providing the opportunity for us to accelerate the pace of our transformationCOVID-19 has shown that our strategy is sound.

Its time to move into a new digitally-empowered phase, he adds:

We aren't settling for our current leadership position with consumers or in digital, we're pursuing even further separation. We're transforming Nike faster to define the marketplace of the future. Now is the time to act.

But is the strategy sound? On the face of it, digital business remains a strength for Nike, currently running at a 79% year-on-year growth rate. Consumer engagement is also up, with locked-down users causing demand for workouts on the Nike training app to triple, peaking in April at 5 million a week, while the Nike commerce app has been downloaded more than 8 million times since February. The goal now is to get digital use up to a level where it accounts for half of total business, up from just under a third where it currently stands.

The first fruit of this ambition will be what Donahoe calls a marketplace of the future, more closely aligned with what consumers want. Being your own Amazon is a development signposted long before COVID-19 when last year Nike broke off a pilot relationship with the real thing to sell selected items via its marketplace. At the time, the firm said it wanted to focus on elevating consumer experiences through more direct, personal relationships. That will be part of the role of its own marketplace offering, confirms Donahoe:

As we look at opportunities to build deeper and more meaningful relationships with consumers, our vision is to create a clear and connected digital marketplace to match. Consumers want modern, seamless experiences, online-to-offline. So we're accelerating our approach. Our OneNike marketplace strategy leads with Nike Digital in our own stores and embraces a small number of strategic partners who share our vision to provide a consistent premium shopping experience. Connected data, inventory and membership will give consumers greater access to the best of Nike with more speed and convenience than ever. We've talked about membership as a growth driver and differentiator before, but now will align our business to make it central to everything we do.

And theres going to be an increased focus on building out the firms underlying technology foundations, including spend on enhanced digital commerce analytics, marketing technology for better consumer targeting and segmentation, those online-to-offline marketplace capabilities as well as enhanced inventory pricing and supply management tools. Donahoe explains:

Simply put, we will more aggressively leveragetechnologyto make Nike better. This single integratedtechnologystrategy across our business will accelerate how we serve consumers. Specifically, we'll speed up the unifier investments across demand sensing, insight gathering, inventory management and more. This simplified approach will unlock more efficiency for the business, while driving speed and responsiveness as we serve consumers globally.

That all sounds good, but is it enough to get the brand back on track in the post-pandemic era? Some 90% of Nike stores in the US have now re-opened, but even as this has occurred, digital demand has continued to accelerate. With that in mind, Consumer Direct acceleration isnt just pitched as a holding action, but rather as an active growth strategy. Donahoe says:

It's the spark that will ignite and empower our entire company to serve consumers, our business and our teams better. As we shift our operating model to fuel this strategy, Nike's leadership position will become even stronger in the future as sports continues to resonate with consumers amid a global shift toward health and wellness.

And new stores are part of that vision, he adds, including smaller format, digitally-enabled mono brand stores with integrated online to offline capabilities. Donahoe says:

In a funny way, I would characterize this investment in these new doors as a continued investment in our digital future. We look at everything through the eyes of the consumer. Consumers are becoming accustomed to getting what they want, when they want it, how they want it. This pandemic really demonstrates a shift toward digital being at the center of everything they do.

But they want modern and seamless experiences. They don't necessarily just want to buy digitally and have it shipped to home. Youre seeing during the pandemic - and we believe it will continue - [that] they want to buy on their digital device and go pick it up in the store. Or with soft goods, like apparel, they may want to reserve it online and try it on in the store. They may want to be in a store and buy something that is not in the store because of inventory, and the associate uses a digital device to buy it and get shipped home.

So consumers increasingly want a consistent, seamless physical and digital experience. That's what we're committed to providing and we're committed to providing those through, first and foremost, our own digital capabilities as well as our own physical stores, factories and direct.

Over the past few months, we have navigated unprecedented conditions. But our purposeful actions will allow us to emerge from its stronger and better than ever before. The strength of our brand, our deep connections to consumers and our unmatched product innovation give us an advantage to create and define our future fuelled by the Consumer Direct acceleration, Nike will shape the marketplace and extend our brand leadership for years to come.

Donahoe certainly knows how to spin a confident vision of fitness in the future, even if the present is considerably more out of shape. The integrated digital strategy is a sound enough one and Nike has made solid investments in the past on this front, but the reality is that only 30% of revenue has come in from digital sales during the pandemic period to date. Admittedly that means that Nike has hit, two years early, a target it had set itself to achieve in fiscal 2023. But with 90% of physical stores closed for most of the last three months, a larger shift to online sales might have been expected.

It seems that Nikes customer base enjoys the trip to the store and checking out the product in person, an experience that cant be replicated on an iPad. With the pandemic not over that has implications for Nike moving forward. A tranche of the tech investment moving forward might usefully go on the sort of experiential tools espoused by Galeries Lafayette in that retail giants strategic vision.Whats happened over the past few months has been a timely reminder, not just for Nike, that even the most digitally-savvy of omni-channel retailers remains dependent on the physical side of the market. Making the in-store aspect as digitally-integrated as possible is going to become a critical retail competitive differentiator in the so-called new normal. But then, thats the kind of challenge that Nike brought in a digital champion as CEO to solve.
