Illinois health and fitness working group looks forward to reopening gyms – WSIL TV

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WSIL) A south suburban Illinois senator says Gov. JB Pritzker's working group on health and fitness is close to moving forward with their plans to reopen gyms.
Sen. Michael Hastings (D-Tinley Park) says many people don't have access to gym equipment at home. Now, there is a growing call to reopen the facilities. The group takes suggestions from the Illinois Department of Public Health and experts in the fitness industry.
Members are happy Pritzker allowed personal training and outdoor fitness classes to resume in Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan. However, that doesn't help the owners get over the current financial hurdle. "Getting inside and getting people back on the equipment will help these owners," Hastings said.
He explained many fitness centers have lost $20,000 to $50,000 per month since the pandemic started. The working group recommends Pritzker set aside $40 million from the Business Interruption Grant Program to help the fitness facilities. Hastings' group asked for the same financial assistance when they wrote a letter to Pritzker in May.
"I really truly believe whether it's reopening gradually or providing financial assistance, or doing both, we'll help preserve a lot of these small businesses. A lot of them are individual franchisees," Hastings said. "Gym owners are the true definition of hard workers because they have to be there to make sure the place runs."
He hopes Pritzker will also provide guidance to accelerate Phase 4 options for gym and fitness centers. The working group already has plans to implement social distancing and strict cleaning procedures for employees when the facilities reopen. They're still trying to figure out the best option for capacity requirements.
"Some fitness centers have different layouts. There's boutique fitness centers and there's large cap fitness centers. So, we take that into consideration," Hastings said.

A Simple Workout Guide to Keep Up with Fitness at Home – hobokengirl.com

Although outdoor workouts are permitted in Hoboken again, some of us have gotten into a nice routine of doing at-home workouts {theres something about doing downward dog in the comfort of our living rooms}. However, if youre one to indulge in a more intense workout at home, Michelle Ciancimino, a local personal trainer, Crossfit Level-1 Trainer, and ACE Certified personal trainer, is here to kick all of our butts into high gear with an easy guide.
Its important to note that when working out at home, remember to be extra careful and use your best judgment about what feels right for your body. Now put on some music, your favorite workout gear, and get to work heres your guide to some at-home workout exercises:
A 10-minute warm-up on your own before starting your workout is always a good idea to get your body moving, blood flowing, and heart rate up. Any warm-up that you would normally do in your favorite exercise class or at the gym would work well such as jogging in place, jumping jacks, downward dog walk-outs, and more.
First, do 250 squats. Michelle suggests starting with sets of 20-30 on the squats and reducing to sets of 10-15 towards the end.
Next, do 100 push-ups. For the push-ups, stick to 10 sets of 10. Modified push-ups can be done such as hand-release push-ups or knee push-ups. Be sure to take small breaks in between, no more than 30 seconds.
Then, do four rounds of straight-arm planks.
Every three minutes for eight rounds, do 12 dumbbell clean + jerks. You should finish each round around 2:30 minutes, with 30 seconds to rest. If your dumbbells feel light during your workout, use both for the clean and jerks. If your dumbbells are heavy, use one and do six reps on each side.
Then, do 12 lunges with the dumbbell in the front rack. Net, do 12 burpees, followed by a two-minute rest.
Then for six rounds, do three minutes of Hollow Hold Tabata. Basically a hollow hold starts with you laying on the ground. Then you simply lift your legs up about six inches. Your shoulder blades should come off the floor and lower back pressed to the floor.

First, do five rounds of 14 dumbbell overhead presses, 30-secondbutt kicks, and then rest for 30 seconds.
First, do six rounds20 step-ups, 45-second wall sits, and 30-second high knees. Make sure whatever you are using for step-ups is stable, keep your back against the wall for the wall sit, and make sure your knees are above your ankles for the wall sit.
Then, do three rounds of30-seconds jumping squats, 30 seconds jumping lunges, and then rest for 30 seconds. For the jump squats, make sure you jump as high as you can but try to land softly. For the jumping lunges, make sure your whole foot lands on the ground each time.
First, get outside and go for a 25-35 minute run. After that, stretch. Do two minutes of pigeon pose left, two minutes of pigeon pose right, and a two-minute squat hold {pushing your knees out with your elbows}. All of this is followed by 15 Supermans and 15 downward dog to plank motions. Dont be afraid to add in any other stretches your body is calling for, either.

This is your rest day. Just indulge in a 10-minute {minimum} meditation. Mental health is so important just sit down for at least 10 minutes and breathe.A little goes a long way!
Time to jump back in. First, do six rounds of 12 dumbbell deadlifts, 10 dumbbell curls, and eight tricep dips. For the dumbbell curls, do five on the right and five on the left. If your dumbbells are too light, use two dumbbells and do 12 curls using both arms at once. Finally, do six Turkish get-ups using one dumbbell. For these, do three holding the dumbbell in the right hand, then switch to the left.

The lengthy plan to restart the NBA season features fitness rings for temperature tracking – TechCrunch

A memo obtained by The Athletic details the NBAs plans to play out the remainder of the 2019-2020 season, beginning at the end of June. Its a fairly detailed return to action for the league, including some notable tidbits, like, It is critical that every player understand that he has the right to choose not to return to play.
Sports are undoubtedly an important part of a society attempting a return to normality, as a much-needed distraction from the day to day horror show of 2020. But such close-quarter activities ought to come with a fair number of safeguards amid such a highly contagious pandemic.
Amid a long list of guidelines for a season broken down week by week is a surprise inclusion of the Oura smart ring. The letter notes that the wearable may help with the early detection of the coronavirus and will track temperature, respiratory and heart rate and other measures. The league says players will have the option of wearing the ring as a kind of safeguard designed to pick up on COVID-19 warning signs.
Researchers have been interested in using the ring as a detection system for several months now. Back in March, UCSF initiated a study using thousands of front-line health workers, tracking temperature, sleep and other health stats.
In this context, the rings only work as a small part of a much larger puzzle (the full plan runs 113 pages). Its one that invariably needs to include regular temperature screenings and testing the latter of which is key in avoiding the documented spread among asymptotic carriers. Major League Baseball is similarly attempting to start a long-postponed season, though conflicts between owners and players appear to be at an impasse.

Lifting the lives of others: Steamboat fitness guru wins Individual Philanthropist of the Year – Steamboat Pilot and Today

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS A local gym owner with an extraordinary ability to inspire and help others received the Individual Philanthropist of the Year award from the Yampa Valley Community Foundation on Wednesday.
Graham Muir received some unexpected guests before his first class at his Manic Training workout gym when members of the Community Foundation surprised him with the award. Given annually, it recognizes those who exhibit significant charitable giving, insightful leadership and volunteerism and who encourage others to contribute by example.
He is, in my opinion, the epitome of who should get the Philanthropist of the Year award, said LauraCusenbary, a former member of the Community Foundation board who has nominated Muir multiple times.
A New Zealand native, Muir has amassed a devoted following of clients at his gym where he emphasizes exercise as a way to not only achieve fitness goals but to gain valuable insights on living a better life.

Im not one of his disciples, but he just has that charisma that motivates people in such a positive way,Cusenbary said.
Outside of the gym, Muir takes an active role in supporting charitable causes and rallying the community to help nonprofit organizations. By Cusenbarys count, he personally enlisted half of the participants of last years Codys Challenge and consistently garners a large turnout for the Tour de Steamboat race.
When Muir sees that an event or a cause is important to someone and provides benefits to the community, he does all he can to help make it a success, Cusenbary said.
That is what happened when Mara McManus Rhodes started attending Manic Training in 2015. Rhodes had recently lost her brother to an opioid overdose and founded a nonprofit in his name, theMark McManus Foundation, as well as the Rx Task Force, to address the issue of addiction locally.
As Rhodes explained, it was a fledgling effort when she met Muir, but after he learned about her work, he vowed to help.In 2016, Muir organized the Manic Task Force Challenge, an exercise fundraiser at theWhistler Park rugby fields. In a single day, the event raised more than $25,000 for Rhodes foundation, she said.
Without Graham, my foundation wouldnt really exist, Rhodes said.
Apart from his philanthropic accolades, Graham has achieved impressive physical feats of his own. Last May, hepedaled a fat bike 350 miles across the Alaskan tundra in the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Prior to the race, he took up the challenge of biking Lane of Pain, a grueling section of dirt road at the top of Emerald Mountain, 100 times within the same number of days to raise money for children of the villages he would be traveling through in Alaska.
Muir has been a catalyst for others looking to achieve great things.
Rhodes remembers when she was preparing for her first major bike race, a 150-mile trek through Utah called the Kokopelli. As the start of the race drew nearer, Rhodes doubted whether she could do it.
Graham looked at me and he said, You have been through so many hard things. This isnt going to be hard. This is going to be fun, Rhodes recalled.
It is that type of encouragement that Muir offers everyone in his Manic Training classes.
A lot of people who work out at Manic have overcome a lot of things, Rhodes said, from physical disabilities to the loss of a loved one. Its not just about the workout. Its how you feel about yourself and how you give back to the people around you.
Muir is the final recipient of this years round of philanthropy awards. The owners of Ace Hardware in Steamboat Springswon Business Philanthropist of the Year for donating more than $1 million to local nonprofits over their 36 years in business.Maddie Craigen, a recent Steamboat Springs High School graduate, received theYouth Philanthropist of the Yearaward.

ENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) Connecticut began phase two of the states reopening plan Wednesday which included the opening of indoor dining, fitness centers, hotels, and more.
Connecticut residents are now living with more signs of normalcy as phase two of the states re-opening began. The following are some businesses that have reopened:
22News visited Country Diner in Enfield to see the new regulations these businesses will have to follow. Some of the regulations are indoor seating that is half of their normal capacity, requiring all customers to wear masks except when seated and keeping tables six feet apart.
The owner of the diner said it actually felt a little unusual getting back to what used to be the norm but she did say she was glad to see her customers in the diner.
It was a little nerve-wracking since we got in such a habit over the last month doing takeout so now we have to relearn everything we thought we remembered but its nice to see our customers again, Manager Carrie Phimvongsa said.
Gyms and fitness centers opened for the first time in three months. State regulations require gyms to be open at 50% of their normal capacity and space out machines. Practices that were being followed at Club Fitness in Enfield.
We have to log each member as they arrive and as they leave. Theyre all handed a sanitary bottle with a wipe and they take their own bottle with a wipe and clean each machine off. James Grigaitis Trainer at Club Fitness said.
Maska are requirement in all connecticut gym but if youre doing a high intensity workout and need to catch your breath you can take your mask off as long as youre 12 feet away from others.
Gyms will be open in Massachusetts as part of phase three while indoor dining will be open as the second part of phase two.

Shriver takes on cult of fitness zealotry – Sydney Morning Herald

On the needling of a personal trainer called Bambi, whose body "recalled the diagrams of human musculature in anatomy textbooks", Remington decides to take on a triathlon too, a move his wife regards as "flagrantly impossible and mentally ill".
Though shes been active her whole life, Serenata rages against fitness fundamentalism, and the book explores how hostility to her husbands vainglorious training creates a fissure in their relationship. Wending through the narrative are reflections on ageing, long-term partnership and parenting, with Shriver on sure ground when exploring faddish, maniacal athleticism.
She also takes a detour with an easy swing at "perky evangelical positivism" through the couples daughter, a happy-clappy born-again Christian.
More controversially, though, she remains unrepentant at earlier charges levelled at her about political correctness, diversity and cultural appropriation, and there are elements in the book that seemed to be written to provoke her detractors.
Author Lionel Shriver.Credit:Edwina Pickles
Remington, for instance, is tired of hearing how privileged he is to be a member of the "straight white patriarchy" when he has to "check everything I plan to say three times before I allow it out".
It was an altercation with his boss that had cost him his job. (She just happened to be a young black woman who majored in gender studies.) As a voice artist for audiobooks and video games, Serenata also finds demand for her services has waned because her use of people-of-colour accents is deemed mimicry and problematic.
Such snark is unnecessarily heavy-handed, which is a shame as the rest of the book has a lot of interesting things to say about human fallibilities, personal beautification and the redemptive church of exercise.

Fitness key to Solskjaers United plan, now more important than ever – United In Focus
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer went into this season as Manchester United manager he made it his priority for the squad to be fitter.
Speaking in October after the draw with Liverpool, Solskjaer told theclub websitehe felt his plan was coming to fruition.
He said:Weve trained hard and were fitter than weve ever been. In the Liverpool game we outran them and I dont think anyone would have thought that about us last season. The boys have got a different engine now.
As we head towards Uniteds first match of the restarted season in late June, Uniteds extensive fitness work may really pay off.
Indeed for two months of lockdown, fitness work was all Uniteds players were allowed to do, before an eventual return to Carrington in late May.
This is where the hard work Solskjaer instilled in his players from last summer may really pay off.
Already his players were tuned into his expectations to stay in peak condition, and we will soon see just how they have embraced the challenge.
This restarted campaign is a leap into the unknown, and the players will have to be ready for anything. They should be raring to go, and several would have been expecting to play in June anyway, just in an international tournament instead of club football.
The fitness of Manchester Uniteds players has been tested throughout the season. The team have been required to play twice a week and have played 47 matches already.
There are nine Premier League matches left, and if all get played, three FA Cup games, and six Europa League games. Its not just about tonights game, its about maintaining fitness and intensity across all of them.
United took the approach throughout the recent period to order their players to be prepared, and the players have seemed to buy in, Scott McTominays incredibly fast 5k run time of just 16 minutes he recorded demonstrates.
The players were not resting, they were working hard, under strict instructions.
Last summer Solskjaer toldThe Telegraph: We are building fitness, robustness, mental robustness and it has been very encouraging.
It all looked to be coming together as the team hit form in February and March before the season was halted.
This organisation and preparation will leave United in a good condition, potentially much better than other teams, now the games are finally ready to resume.
There was no sudden scramble to get fit. Uniteds players are already in top shape.
Several of them look leaner and stronger, with Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Greenwood among those to look a little different.
Solskjaer even said of Greenwood, via the club website: You see Mason and know hes getting a little bit stronger and more like a man. And, for us, in training, its been good seeing him making that step to really maturing now.
He is taking the gym really seriously and everything he is doing really seriously and looks a different player, to be fair. These are exciting times for him as well.
In there is just a 10 per cent edge on our competitors heading into these return games, it could make a huge difference.
The players have listened to Solskjaer, and over the next few weeks, the managers masterplan could bring strong results.

Colorados fitness industry starting to reawaken, but some studios will never reopen – Longmont Times-Call

![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
Buying Barre Forte in LoHi was the realization of a dream years in the making for Sage Fennig. She had longed to own a business that empowers people and makes them feel good about themselves, but only 15 days after she took ownership in March, her dream took a nightmare turn when Colorados fitness industry was shut down due to the coronavirus.
I live right down the street, Fennig said. Ive lived in downtown Denver for the past 16 years, so I really know the area. I know the clientele really well. If I had a dream situation, this was it. Then COVID-19 happened.
Twelve weeks after being shut down, Fennig reopened this past Monday. According to state guidelines, she can only operate at 25% of capacity, which for her studio means five students with one instructor. For Monday evenings class, five came to the studio while eight more participated online.
In the studio, it felt like a reunion.
Its kind of like family to me, member Sherry Ewing said. Im just really excited to be back and see everyone. I think its a good step to start moving forward. Its all about the community, just being together, seeing each other, having those conversations. Its just wonderful.
Ewing felt relatively safe, too.
I feel more safe coming to the studio than I do grocery shopping, she said.
Gyms, fitness studios and rec centers across Colorado are beginning to reopen in limited fashion under strict guidelines, but many are not. Gyms and rec centers managed by the cities of Denver and Lakewood remain closed until further notice, while Englewoods two rec centers will reopen next week. In Arvada, the Apex Recreation District has begun staged reopenings of its facilities.
Denver recreation centers remain closed due to the public gathering limitations, physical distancing, and cleaning and disinfecting requirements, according to Cyndi Karvaski, a public information officer for Denver Parks and Recreation.
But the Englewood Rec Center will reopen on Monday, by reservation only, for hour-long workout blocks. Each block will be followed by 15 minutes of cleaning with spray sanitizers by workers, according to Englewood senior recreation supervisor Allison Boyd, and the facility will be closed from 1 to 4 p.m. for deeper cleaning. A similar plan will be followed at Englewoods Malley Rec Center, a facility for people 55 and over.
The new state guidelines allow gyms to operate at up to 25% capacity or 50 people, whichever is fewer. Complicating matters is that some counties have received variances with different sets of rules. In Lakewood, officials are still trying to determine whether they can open any rec centers before August.
The city is working to balance the ability to operate safely under the limitations, recall employees from furloughs to open the facilities, and pay the cost of operating the facilities with limited users at a time when the citys revenues have dropped significantly, said Stacie Oulton, a public information officer for the city of Lakewood.
Planet Fitness gyms inCastle Rock, Loveland, Parker and Greeley have reopened, and all but one Denver location will open next week. Fourteen metro-area 24 Hour Fitness gyms are scheduled to reopen June 22, according to the corporate website.
Kindness Yoga will begin a phased reopening on July 1 with only one location operating at first, the South Broadway studio. Members received an email this week from Kindness conceding that we face the reality that not all nine studios will be reopening, but founder Patrick Harrington said no decisions have been made on which ones will close permanently.
Evo Rock + Fitness in Louisville will reopen on Monday, June 15..G1 Climbing + Fitness, a new facility in Broomfield that had been open for a month when gyms were closed by the state, reopened June 4 the day the new state guidelines went into effect. Earth Treks climbing gyms will reopen June 22.
Some studios will never reopen, though, and their owners are devastated.
Before the pandemic, Andora Freedom owned three Samadhi Yoga locations that she said were thriving. But after 18 years in business, she is shutting the businesses down.
It was much more than a yoga center, Freedom said. It was a spiritual center. It was peoples church, it was peoples sacred space. If your life was falling apart, you could go, you could just cry. You would be held in the energy of the space. Those people now are giving me the hope that one day Im going to get a life back, because now my life is destroyed. Ive got nothing left, and I dont know how the hell Im going to get through this.
She says she has been through a hellish experience and blames government officials state and federal for lack of support.
Its deeply upsetting to me because I find that my greatest responsibility is creating a sense of community for people, and I find that to be vital for peoples thriving, Freedom said. Knowing that I can no longer be that for people, thats pretty devastating.
Another studio that will not come back is Flex Yoga + Barre. Co-owner Sarah Mellick said the financial numbers just really werent there to operate within the severely limited capacity restrictions mandated by the state.
It was not an easy decision, Mellick said. So much has been put into the space and the community, and theres a lot of emotion behind it. Its hard to go out on terms that werent necessarily yours. When we closed doors on March 16, never in a million years did I imagine that it would be for good. We all thought it was just going to be a few weeks and we would be back up and running.
Freedom said she would be surprised if any yoga studios make it through this transition, and long-term financial viability is still a worry for Fennig despite the excitement of reopening her Barre Forte location on Monday. She has spent $1,000 to enhance her online streaming equipment in hopes of generating more revenue.
Were not going to cut it moving forward if we have to maintain at 25% and are not able to make up some lost revenue through live streaming and on demand-services or outdoor classes, Fennig said. I dont know if were ever going to truly make it, and if I am going to be able to fully see out my dream, no matter how hard I work.
