Some Edmonton fitness centres and pools to reopen in July, but time-specific reservation required for visits – Edmonton Journal

Both the fitness centre and pool at Kinsmen Sports Centre are also slated to open in July, but a date hasnt been confirmed as the site is currently being used as an overnight shelter for homeless residents. Indoor running tracks and playgrounds at all facilities will not be available for use. Child-minding and drop-in classes will also not be offered, the city said.

Arenas will be the first city amenity to reopen, with five of the citys 23 arenas opening July 2. Public skating and shinny hockey will not be offered and the rinks will only be available for organization bookings. Kenilworth, Clareview, Londonderry, Callingwood and Mill Woods arenas will open July 2, Castle Downs on July 6, Russ Barnes on July 7 and The Meadows on July 13. Bookings already made for July at these arenas will proceed and additional bookings can be made starting July 2.Group rental opportunities will also be available for rec centre gyms and fitness studios.

Recreation centres were allowed to reopen as of June 12 within stage two of the provinces economic relaunch, but interim city manager Adam Laughlin said the city would hold off until at least early July to reopen any facilities to add additional safety measures and allow time to decide what to open.

The city warns the facilities will look a bit different with additional signage and health guidelines. Laughlin and recreation branch manager Roger Jevne are expected to address the media on the relaunch Friday afternoon.

Weve lost 9 stone in lockdown after deadly links between obesity and coronavirus left us terrified – The Sun

STARING at her holiday photos in horror, Anna Jones allowed herself to feel a rush of relief - it looked like she'd managed to transform her figure just in time, and it had only taken a few weeks.

With terrifying news everywhere on the potentially deadly risks of being obese amid the coronavirus outbreak, she felt sure she'd managed to dramatically slash her chances of ending up in intensive care, should she be unlucky enough to catch the virus.

15

Anna had piled on the pounds over the last few years, taking her over 15 stone at her heaviest, after indulging on wine and cheese almost every night - but she's now completely overhauling her lifestyle in an effort to ensure she's as safe as possible for the sake of her two kids.

And she's not alone.

Several Brits have used lockdown as the push they needed to finally shed the weight - and three of them have managed to lose more than eight stone between them in the last few weeks.

With studies showing obese people could face double the risk of being hospitalised, and a 37 per cent higher chance of death, it's never been so important to urgently address weight issues.

15

15

Here, three women share their weight loss journeys - and how they've transformed their figures since lockdown...

Full-time mum-of-two Anna Jones, 30, from Walsall has lost 2.11 stone since lockdown started, having been left shocked by her recent holiday photos - while growing terrified at the dire news about obesity.

It's taken her from 15.2 (and a BMI of 33, which is classed as obese), down to 12.5.

15

She says: "I started a diet a couple of days before lockdown. We arrived back from Lanzarote, I looked at my holiday photos and that was it Even while I was there I wasnt comfortable, I wasnt happy, and I just thought this is it.

I was getting very breathless on holiday. Ive got two young children and they were wanting to run off everywhere.

I was sitting in seats at bars and thinking, God these chairs are quite small. I was kidding myself really.

But I didnt realise how big I was. It was total denial.

When trying new clothes on, you'd think, oh the sizes must be getting smaller in the shops, or all my clothes are shrinking.

Im not following a set diet plan, Im just doing what I feel works for me cutting out fat and carbs, and almost all alcohol. Its a high protein diet really.

15

Every Sunday I have a cheat day with my roast beef dinner and Yorkshire puddings, with a gin instead of wine.

I used to have wine most days... Im not proud saying that. You get into a rut, drinking too much then when Id have a few wines Id think, oh Im hungry now.

Ive stuck the before photo of me at my biggest on the fridge now, reminding me I never want to be that big again.

Id said to my husband before, I cant look at the scales. I want you to look and write it doesnt each week, but dont tell me.

I only plucked up the courage to look at my start weight recently. I thought, if I saw a really big, depressing number, Id just go out, grab a couple of bottles of wine and drink my troubles away.

Seeing the news [about a possible link between obesity and increased coronavirus risk] recently has been very, very scary for me.

15

Ive got two little kids so its important I look after myself.

I was 11 stone a few years ago on my birthday, and I remember feeling really good, so that's my goal now.

Losing what I have has already massively increased my self-confidence. I pay more attention to my hair and make-up now, because I think its worth it.

Before I felt a mess, no matter what I did.

Everyone needs that moment when they think, enough is enough. Ive done it in lockdown, so anyone can do it.

Theres never been a more important time than now.

Retired NHS health visitor Cherry Hope, 57, from Perth in Scotland has lost 2.8 stone in lockdown with Weight Watchers.

She had hit more than 19 stone (with a BMI over 40) and realised she needed to make a drastic change - not only for herself, but for her former colleagues working tirelessly on the frontline. She's now hit 16.8.

15

She says: "Like a lot of people, Ive never liked being fat or embraced it what a load of rubbish!

Ive been in the NHS since I was 17 and up until I had the kids, I was pretty sporty and reasonably slim. But it all went to hell when I had the kids.

Its really off when youre in a position of advising people about health and you think, Im carrying a good few stones over myself. It was ridiculous.

It was kind of a thunderbolt for me. If you get really sick because youve chosen to be fat and greedy, you bring it on yourself!

You get these images of these horrifically, morbidly obese people on TV, having to get their walls knocked down, rolling around, they cant lie down because theyll squash their own necks

You start thinking about your own morbidity.

The thing that did it for me was reading about the vulnerable groups during Covid. Its no great shock that those with a BMI of 40 or above are going to fare worse, overweight people are worse in every sphere.

It was kind of a thunderbolt for me. If you get really sick because youve chosen to be fat and greedy, you bring it on yourself!

For me, my husband is still working in a medical centre every day, so thats a concern too.

Given my age and being so heavy, my joints hurt youre just aware. Its like carrying round sacks on your back.

15

15

I was so aware of people who are younger and fitter succumbing to caveat problems or even dying and Id think, this is just stupid. Its preventable.

I have MS as well, its very mild, but it means Im one of Boris 12-week self-isolation lot. It's not directly connected to my weight but it makes moving very difficult if you have bouts of pain.

Im massively fortunate that I could retire when I did. Ive got colleagues just a little younger than me that dont have that option.

Hearing what theyve had to face [is awful]. People are still dying of this virus and the threat of what they could easily contract, plus coming home to their families I dont know how Id have managed if Id still been working.

As far as my story goes, there was no mystery about it. I'd eat everything [but it was] generally portion control, thats always a problem.

Im also a sweetie person. I used to adore cakes and bits like that.

15

I used to have some wine and then Id snack on a family bag of crisps. Then Id have my curry or whatever, and then dessert.

Breakfast would always be buttery toast... It would be like watching a master plasterer plastering it all over it you could see my teeth marks. Id leave teeth impressions for a CSI team, they could identify me by my toast!

Now Ive turned it round, I've cut out alcohol and Im exercising all the time and the weights just falling off. Im cross at myself that I didnt get a grip a while back.

The Weight Watchers people have been so incredibly encouraging and supportive. The app is a wonderful gadget, and I've experienced my whole journey so far virtually."

Hazel Evans, 29, from Gloucestershire has lost 4 stone on the 1:1 Diet since starting it in January - a great chunk of which has been during lockdown.

While she was 15.12 at her heaviest, with a BMI in the high 30s, she's now dropped below 30 with a weight of 11.12 in an amazing transformation - potentially reducing her risks should she contract coronavirus.

15

15

She says: "Ive wanted to lose weight for a long time, Ive probably been overweight for a good 15 years.

Id actually been offered some money towards weight loss surgery by a family member, but I wanted to try this first. The 1:1 diet really stood out to me and its meant Ive avoided that now.

Im now at the lowest I have been since 15 years ago, when I was at school.

I was borderline morbidly obese and now Im just overweight, its brilliant.

It's been so easy, Ive got a consultant, Ive had deliveries straight to my door of my products, we do virtual weigh ins, and there's a private Facebook group.

Seeing the news motivates me so much more too. Its something Ive thought about quite a lot, because knowing Im not in that category anymore is such a relief.

15

15

15

Ive managed to change that so quickly and so easily, Id urge anybody to do it. My risk has immediately been lowered.

I feel so much more confident too. Im actually a hairdresser, so I spend all day every day making everyone else look beautiful and feel fantastic, and Ive kind of almost faked that myself.

What would happen to humans exposed to the vacuum of space without a spacesuit? – ZME Science

Scene from the movie Total Recall when Arnold Schwarzenegger is exposed to Mars thin atmosphere. Suffice to say, this is highly unrealistic. Credit: Total Recal (1990).

Its yet another boring day at the space station. You check your holographic wrist-watch, and you finally get excited: in 10 minutes youre supposed to have a delicious lunch of turkey in a toothpaste tube, with a side of telomere-enhancing pills. You get too excited though, and accidentally open the hatch to the airlock. Seconds later you find yourself floating through space with no spacesuit, wearing just the typical astronaut pajamas. Boy, did you mess up big time!

Although youve seen all the Sci-Fi movies, as a trained astronaut, you actually know better. No, you wont explode and your blood wont boil. But that doesnt mean its pretty. Far from it! If youre lucky maybe if you have a good 15 seconds to do something before you lose consciousness.

As youre drifting through space, the flow of time grinds to a crawl. You begin to remember your training and what those NASA nerds explained would happen in the unlikely event that one ends up hurled in space without a spacesuit.

When on Earth, the weight of the air around us pushes against the body. In turn, the pressure inside our body pushes back against the weight of the air pressing the skin. The result is a state of perfect balance.

However, space is virtually vacuum, which means that any person unfortunate enough to find their self unshielded in such an environment will experience rapid internal decompression. They wont explode, though and you have our skin to thank.

The largest organ in the human body, the skin, is extremely flexible and tough. Therefore, it is able to expand without spilling its contents.

Yet, this doesnt mean that the experience is pleasant. The body will expand to roughly twice its volume because the water in the tissue will rapidly turn into water vapour. This action will also push against internal organs. For instance, air expansion in the gut will push against the diaphragm and heart. As air is rapidly expelled out of the lungs, there might be some damage to the delicate tissue the lines the lungs and the airways.

The sudden loss of pressure will also cause decompression sickness due to bubbles of nitrogen in the muscles and bones, as well as the lack of oxygen, known as hypoxia. In fact, it is the loss of oxygen that will kill you first.

The worst thing one could do in a situation when youre flung into space is to hold their breath. If you do this, bubbles of air will be forced into the bloodstream, eventually arriving in the brain where they will cause a stroke. Holding your breath will also expose the lungs to the force of atmospheric-pressure air against pure vacuum, likely rupturing quickly. This can happen to scuba divers if they descend too quickly into deep waters.

Even if you breathe normally, you wont have time for much else, though. Starved of oxygen, the brain will enter safe mode to conserve energy about 15 seconds after being exposed to the vacuum of space. But even though the unfortunate astronaut might be unconscious, theyre not dead yet. That happens around the two-minute mark when all the other organs fail from oxygen deprivation.

There are quite a few instances of vacuum-induced hypoxia that we know of. In 1982, a technician who was running tests on a vacuum chamber was accidentally exposed to extremely low pressure, equivalent to 3.6% of sea-level atmospheric pressure. He spent a full minute in these conditions until he was pulled out. His skin turned blue, the lips were frothing, and there was bleeding from the lungs. The man recovered fully not long after, but others who suffered accidents in vacuum chambers werent so lucky and died due to prolonged exposure.

When the International Space Station faces the sun, the external temperature is around 121 C (250 F). When the sun is blocked by Earth, the temperature around the space station hovers around -157 C (-250 F).

At face value, any of these temperatures sound horrific. A spacesuit-less human just outside the space station would surely either boil alive or get turned into a popsicle in under a minute, right? However, youre thinking of heat transfer on Earth.

In space, there is no air, so heat cant be transferred through conduction (direct contact between two objects) or convection (energy transfer through a fluid like water or air). The only viable means of heat transfer between two objects in this case the human body and space that youre left with is radiation.

Humans radiate heat at a rate of only 100 Watts, much like an incandescent light bulb. Given the sheer mass of the human body, it will take a long time before you freeze. Other things would have killed you long before this happens.

Its been a full second since you stupidly flung yourself outside the space station, basically bare naked in space. During this time, your mind went into overdrive. You remember from your training that you shouldnt hold your breath, nor that your body will explode, boil, or instantly turn into a popsicle as you see in the movies. The thought of missing turkey also creeps to mind.

Now, you have approximately 14 seconds left before youll get knocked out. You decide to put this little time to good use and immediately make quick taps on your wristwatchs holographic display and alert the rest of the crew on the space station. Black out.

You slowly open your eyes which hurt badly due to the evaporation of water inside the ocular tissue and are greeted by the familiar face of the captain of the mission crew. Another 5 seconds and you wouldve been done for, she retorts. Good thing we got your message and used the stations telescopic arm to pull you back in right on time.

Lesson learned. Always wear protection!

The Rundown: Long Gone Summer Yawn-Inducing, Sosa Refuses Admission of Guilt, White Sox Erased Again, Players Refuse Further Negotiations -…

Sammy Sosa probably didnt do much to repair his fractured association with the Ricketts family though last nights milquetoast documentary, Long Gone Summer. Though the ESPN 30 for 30 special let us relive that wonderful summer and the home run chase he shared with Mark McGwire, the slugger refused to admit that he specifically did anything to tarnish the game or the organization.

The ownership, they have to understand that Im a humble man, Im not a man to have ego, when I was playing I was a little bit because I was focused on what I was trying to do, Slammin Sammy said. But right now Im gonna be 50 years old. Im a granddaddy, Im a grandparent, so things change. So if I made a mistake, I dont have to say that, but if I made a mistake, I didnt want to offend any body, I dont have a problem with that, Im sorry because you know, I was in my zone.

A film dedicated specifically to Sosa would probably be more fascinating than last nights special. I found the part about his upbringing amidst impoverished conditions in the Dominican Republic one of the films finer moments. Short of Ernie Banks, Fergie Jenkins, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, and Kerry Wood, few players have been as beloved to Cubs fans in the history of the franchise.

No player from that era has had to specifically answer questions about PED use. Heck, Barry Bonds, who could be the poster boy for HGH, has been welcomed back by the Giants. Even lex Rodrguez, a repeat offender, is protected by at least a thin layer of immunity from the sport and the teams he played for.

The New York Times reported in 2009 Sosa was one of 104 MLB players in 2003 to test positive for PEDs, the results of which were supposed to have been sealed. Nobody has seen the results except for the league, federal agents who seized the documents, and the author of the article, Michael S. Schmidt. In fact, the veracity of that report and the source of its information have been questioned more than once. Additionally, no players or coaches from that era of Cubs baseball have come forth with a statement offering any proof that Sosa was juicing.

Sosa himself has refused to admit guilt despite the leak. When asked in March 2005 under oath before a government committee investigating the illegal use of steroids in the game, the right fielder added To be clear, I have never taken illegal performance-enhancing drugs. I have never injected myself or had anyone inject me with anything.

He was never pursued on charges he may have perjured himself.

I dont know exactly what Tom Ricketts needs to hear from Sosa to end the sluggers exile, but if he is looking for an admission that the energetic right fielder took illegal substances, its not coming. The Cubs chairman has made it clear that he wants his pound of flesh and thats probably not going to change after last nights special.

Why do they worry about me when pretty much everybody in that era did [steroids]? Sosa said in the documentary.

Though the teams all-time home run leader believes he will make a triumphant return to the franchise and fanbase that lovingly adored him for the better part of 13 seasons, it would seem only a change in ownership will provide such an occasion.

What I dont like is taking the blame for [everybody] else. That was a year that we had to do what we had to do. I feel [grateful] to the Chicago Cubs, they gave me the opportunity to be the player that I was.

Cubs News & Notes

Apropos of Nothing

These were my personal top five jams of 1998, heavily influenced by my girlfriend at the time, who always had control of my stereo wherever we drove. In reality, I was mostly into John Cougar Mellencamp, Tom Petty, and Matchbox 20 at the time, with a little Bruce Springsteen tossed in for good measure.

Odds & Sods

ESPN continues to ignore the White Sox, which may have been the best thing about Long Gone Summer.

MLB News & Notes

With owners continually sticking to the same script when it comes to player salaries, negotiations have been utterly ridiculous.

Rob Manfred will never put the game ahead of its owners, and the league statement regarding current negotiations proves that.

The league announced a $2 billion partnership with Turner Sports over the weekend.

The players are refusing to counter the leagues latest proposal, and have demanded that Manfred provide information on restarting the season today.

There was a great deal of intrigue during the 1998 season, but all of it, including the World Series, was overshadowed by Sosa-McGwire.

Joe Torre said his 98 Yankees team never got the credit they deserved. New York won 114 games that season and went 11-2 in the playoffs, including a sweep of the Padres in the World Series.

Extra Innings

A nice gesture by the organization but I hope they remember that millions of Cubs fans worldwide joined into this crazy family of ours just because of #21.

Sliding Into Home

Its important to remember that the position of commissioner in baseball has always been built on the premise that the person in charge be a stooge for ownership. From Kenesaw Mountain Landis to Manfred, any commissioner who has exclusively sided with baseballs land owners has enjoyed longevity in the position. The lone exceptions were Bart Giamatti, who died 154 days after accepting the gig, and Fay Vincent, who was forced from the position after three seasons in 1992 for being too accommodating to players.

They Said It

Monday Walk Up Song

Stay (Wasting Time) by Dave Matthews Band I watched the entire documentary last night, an in retrospect, I could have made much better use of the two hours. As far as todays song, I went to my first DMB concert in 1998. I was promised that as a Grateful Dead fan I would see and hear many similarities. That was a lie, but I had a good time anyway.

Robbie Williams shared an unusual way to lose weight – FREE NEWS

The musician Robbie Williams has his way of keeping himself in perfect shape. Although, it did not appear thanks to the advice of a doctor or books about healthy nutrition, but rather because of Williams strange lifestyle. He spoke about the latter in an interview with The Sun:

In the morning, I just dont get up. I have no fasting or special reason to do this. Rather, I sleep all the time that others deny themselves morning food. I dont go to bed before 5 or 6 in the morning. Im just an owl in my lifestyle and I was born that way. And not that I liked it.

According to Robbie, he can not do anything with his bizarre biorhythms and has long been resigned to this state of affairs:

I would not want this to be so, but in the end, the most productive period begins with me from one in the morning to five in the morning. At this time, I do everything outlined, after I go to bed and wake up at noon. Then I eat around 5 p.m. and feel full.

The strangest thing is that as soon as I had children, this unusual phenomenon stopped happening. I believe that as soon as you have children, they simply take away all your energy and all unnecessary thoughts, said the musician.

Kelly Clarkson Says She Felt More Pressure to Lose Weight When She Was Really Thin – Prevention.com

Kelly Clarkson never wanted the fame that came with her singing talent, but she eventually came to terms with it. Shell never come to terms with, however, the wildly unrealistic body standards she was upheld to as soon as the world learned her name.

In an interview with Glamour UK, she reflected on her early career when comparison was at every corner. I felt more pressure from people actually when I was thin, when I was really thin and not super healthy because I just was worn out, the 38-year-old artist explained. It was more of magazines shoved in front of you and, This is what youre competing with and weve got to compete with it. I cant compete with that.

Kevin WinterGetty Images

She continued: There would be a chick naked on the cover. Im not joking, literally naked. I was like, Unless Im doing an SNL skit and this is a comedy thing, Im never going to pull it off. Even in my thinnest, most fit moment, its just not my personality to be naked on the front of a magazine.

At the time, it was hard to reject those expectations because she thought her career depended on them. Since then, shes clearly disproven that theory. I fought more when I was thinner than I do now, because now I just walk in and I just look at them like, I dare you to say something. Im happy in my life. Ill work on me in my time! she said.

Thats pretty much how she approached her gig on The Voice, which shes held for four seasons. I got on the number one television show at my heaviest point, because it was right after I had kids and it was like they didnt care, the singer explained. Paul hired me from NBC because he loved my personality, he loved that I connect with people and Im really raw and real. It had nothing to do with my sex appeal or my look aesthetically. It had to do with me as a person. I think its really up to artists to force people to have that mentality.

Enter, her latest single I Dare You, a self-love anthem that fully embodies her continued mission to embrace individuality. There are always things that happen that come up that bum you out, but at the same time youve got to recognize that it's made you who you are, she stated. Im a very strong individual. Im very confident, and Ive been forced to find that in myself.

Weight loss: Experts behind Adeles weight loss diet share the ultimate healthy snack – Express

Its been reported that Adele used the Sirtfood Diet to shed the pounds, a diet formulated by two celebrity nutritionists.

The diet plan relies on the idea of turning on your skinny gene by focusing on foods that increase levels of a specific protein in the body that helps to regulate metabolism.

The proteins are called sirtuins (SIRTs), and so the founders named the foods containing them sirtfoods as part of their revolutionary plan.

The successful diet plan has been outlined in the founders book, and promises that you can lose as much as seven pounds in seven days.

READ MORE:Weight loss: How matcha green tea helps burn fat

The best snack according to the Sirtfood pros is a portion of nuts, which have plenty of health benefits.

Nuts are high in healthy fats, as well as being a source of protein, fibre, magnesium and vitamin E.

In fact, some studies have even shown that they can help you to live longer, as they can help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

The Sirtfood Diet shared the advice on their Instagram page, with the caption:

The health benefits of nuts? Where do you even start? A true champion food linked to reduced body weight and for slashing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

They then shared a recipe to add a bit more flavour to walnuts, pecans and cashews for those who are following the healthy diet plan.

And the ultimate snack food? Its hard to argue with that. So to bring a bit of a flavour kick, why not give these tasty Cajun spiced nuts a try?

250g mix of walnuts, pecans and cashews

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp dried thyme

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp chilli powder

Heat the oven to 160 degrees centigrade/gas mark three.

Mix all the spices together and combine with the nuts and oil. Place the nuts in a single layer on a roasting tray and roast for 25-30 mins.

Tip the toasted nuts into a bowl to cool."

The account regularly posts new recipes to its page for dieters to make at home.

The previous post talked about vegan recipes, saying: While you don't need to be vegan to follow The Sirtfood Diet, it is a celebration of plant foods and their unmatched health benefits.

Plant-based meals are not only great for us but for the health of the planet too. This is why we encourage that people should include some vegan meals in their weekly diet.

The post included an easy chickpea curry recipe from the founders Sirtfood recipe book.

Health Experts Explain the Link Between Chronic Illness and Healthy Eating – Prevention.com

The ninth annual Global Wellness Day took place on June 13, 2020, and it did not disappoint. Each year, the annual event focuses on mental health, nutrition, exercise, and wellbeing with the motto, "One day can change your whole life."

Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Global Wellness Day took place virtually with a 24-hour live stream offering wellness-related events that included presentation, workouts, meditations, and other fun events hosted by experts from all around the world.

Here are three healthy eating tips from Global Wellness Day ambassadors.

Adedamola Ladejobi, certified personal nutritionist and weight loss expert, wants us to know that we are what we eatliterally.

After suffering from Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obesity, Ladejobi decided to make healthy changes in her diet and exercise routine to lose weight. It was transformational for her in multiple ways, including improving her health and contributing to weight loss. "I started to view food as medicine," she said.

"Your food is not just about weight loss or weight gain. You food literally dictates everything that goes on with your body," she said, adding that we need to focus not only on calorie intake, but also on macronutrients and micronutrients.

"We need to stop seeing food as just calories alone," she said. "Whatever you put in body sends signal to your brain and will also give you energy. So whatever you eat determines whether you have a great amount of energy on a daily basis or whether you're going to be weak all the time and suffer from fatigue."

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Ladejobi said that what we eat also has a great impact on our mental health, too. "We do need to eat certain foods and one of these type of foods is healthy fats and getting good sources vitamin D," she said, adding that vitamin D is great for stress relief and calming the nervous system.

Especially following the coronavirus pandemic, Ladejobi said we need to focus on foods that can help our mental health, including foods that are rich in potassium, magnesium, and vitamin b6. She also said guava leaf and chamomile tea also help reduce stress and help with sleep. Lastly, avoid white sugar or anything with a long shelf life. "Whenever you're eating, ask yourself, are you feeding disease or are you fighting disease?" she asked. Some food for thought!

"If ever there was a time when making conscious choices for your health mattes, this is it," said Gloria Treister, H.H.P., founder of Wellness Evolution and Global Wellness Day ambassador, drawing on the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think most people understand what wellness is, but I think what's missing with wellness today is the 'why,'" she said. "Every day we make decisions. Each and every one of these decisions is either lead you in the direction of developing good health or towards developing poor health."

"When you have poor health, you have low energy, you're not eating right, and you're quality of life is not so good," she continued. "When you're developing wellness, you're optimally functioning, so you have more energy, you feel better, you're exercising, you're eating right, you're managing your stress, and you have fine tune biochemistry."

Treister said that health is cumulative, and the top ten global causes of death from the World Health Organization (WHO) includes heart disease, stroke, respiratory problems, diabetes, and dementia. "But is that what's really killing us? Or is the actual cause of death the lifestyle behaviors that lead up to those diseases?" she asked, referring to dietary risks, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, sugar intake, alcohol abuse, and smoking. "All of those things are lifestyle behaviors that we have control over, and we have the power to stop that."

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

"In my view, wellness all encompassing holistic approaching. It's more than a physical fitness program, it's more than nutrition, and it's more than taking a pill or vitamins," she said. "Wellness takes into account the whole person." Treister said physical health, happiness, having a sense of purpose, managing stress, spirituality, community, and having a good family unit are all principles of Global Wellness Day.

Treister also highlighted the role of prevention through healthy eating. "I want you to eat like your life depends on it, because it does," she said. Treister recommends eating fresh, local, organic foods when possible and cutting out sugar, gluten, and dairy. "All your body is looking for is homeostasis," she said. "In medicine, that's just another word for balance."

Our bodies are like giant computers, continuously sending out and responding to various signals. Board certified family physician and functional medicine doctor Tammy Gutierrez, M.D., said that the body is a healing machine that is striving for balance in a complex dance of biology, chemistry, and physics. "We need to understand that dance and support it if we want to be truly well."

"Balance and homeostasis are what wellness really is," Gutierrez said. "Living is a constant push and pull between things that cause damage or inflammation and things that clean up the mess and help us heal. If we have enough internal resources to clean up our internal mess quickly, then we feel healthy and well."

Gutierrez said that every single choice we makesmall or bigimpacts our experience of homeostasis. "By the time most adults have turned 30 or 40, we've often spent up our cleaning supply, so we have fewer resources to spend on healing," she said. "Because the body is such an amazing healing machine, any time you have a chronic problem, it means that something is in the way disrupting the natural healing process."

Typically, Gutierrez said a chronic illness develops due to an ongoing infection or the body is lacking the materials or energy to do the repairs, such as nutrients or sleep.

"You need to remember that you and your body are a team working together, not against one another," she said. "Unfortunately, many of us have lost sight of how to communicate internally with ourselves. Your body sends you messages all day long, usually in the form of feelings or symptoms, but we are often taught to stay focused on our work and what society expects for us. And we learn at a very young age to tune out."

Gutierrez said that if we can learn to listen to the messages that our bodies send early on, then we can restore balance much more quickly and avoid the troublesome problems like chronic illness or other conditions later on in life.

We can communicate back with our bodies by eating nutritious food, getting enough sleep, exercising, and avoiding exposure to toxins. "The health choices we make each day are how we communicate with our bodies. If you are constantly staying offensive things to your body in the form of junk food, smoking, or alcohol, sooner or later going to get a response back you don't like."

Gutierrez recommends organizing the types of choices we can make based on the Functional Medicine Model of Health, which means aiming for balancing with sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress management, and relationships in our lives. "Understand that wellness is a journey, not a destination," she said. "Only you can choose where to step next."

7 benefits of walking and how it can improve your health – Insider – INSIDER

Walking is a form of exercise that can significantly improve your physical and mental health. Not only can it extend your life and prevent disease, but it can also boost your energy and mood.

In addition, studies show that if you walk regularly and quickly enough, it could be the only aerobic exercise you need to keep your heart and lungs healthy.

It's also accessible, easy, and free. So if you're one of the 47% of adults in the US who don't meet the CDC's Physical Activity Guidelines for aerobic activity, then walking is a habit worth pursuing and keeping.

Here's seven research-backed health benefits of walking, as well as how fast, long, and regularly you should walk to reap them.

Walking increases your heart rate, causing you to expend energy and burn calories just like other forms of physical activity such as running, swimming, or cycling. How many calories you burn depends on how fast you walk, for how long, the terrain, and your weight.

A 2020 study published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research found that participants burned an average of 89 calories walking 1,600 meters (about 1 mile). That was only around 20% less than the 113 calories other participants burned running the same distance.

And across the results of nine different walking studies in this 2008 review published in the Annals of Family Medicine, participants lost an average of 0.05 kilograms (0.1 pounds) per week as a result of increasing their step count by between 1,827 and 4,556 steps per day. Overall, that translated to a weight loss of about 5 pounds a year on average across all studies.

The American College of Sports Medicine offers recommendations for how much time people who are overweight or obese should dedicate to physical activity each week to prevent and promote weight loss. It goes as follows:

It's important to note that, if you consume more calories than you burn every day, no amount of walking or any other physical activity will help you lose weight.

Walking increases blood flow around the body so that more blood containing oxygen and nutrients for fuel can reach the large muscles in the legs as well as the brain. This is what makes you feel energized, according to Pete McCall CSCS, exercise physiologist, personal trainer, and author.

In addition, walking and other types of physical exercise have been shown to increase the amount of a type of protein found in the brain, called brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF may be responsible for how well you can think, learn, and memorize amongst other functions in the brain.

"There is a correlation between a brisk walk and elevated levels of BDNF, which can help improve overall cognition, or thought processing," says McCall.

A 2008 study published in the Psychotherapy and Psychosomatic journal found that previously sedentary adults reported feeling more energetic and less fatigued after just 20 minutes of low to moderate aerobic exercise including walking for three days a week over a six week period.

And this 2017 study conducted on sleep deprived women aged 18 to 23, published in the journal of Physiology & Behavior, found that walking up and down the stairs for just 10 minutes at a low to moderate intensity was more energizing than consuming 50mg of caffeine, or about half a cup of coffee.

Walking briskly and regularly can also help protect you from getting a cold, the flu, or other immune-related illnesses.

That's because physical exercise like walking increases the amount of white blood cells circulating in your blood. These cells fight infection and other diseases as part of the body's immune system.

A 2013 study of 800 young adults over six years published in the World Journal of Experimental Medicine showed that white blood cell count increased significantly after just five minutes of exercise.

And this 2005 study published the American College of Sports Medicine's flagship journal measured the white blood cell count of 15 adults immediately after a 30 minute walk as well as after sitting down for the same amount of time. It also found a significant increase in white blood cells.

Walking has also been linked to a lower number of sick days taken. A 2011 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine tracked 1000 adults during flu season. Those who walked at a moderate pace for 30 to 45 minutes a day had 43% fewer sick days and fewer upper respiratory tract infections overall.

Their symptoms were also less severe if they did get sick. That was compared to adults in the study who were sedentary.

Walking can also help relieve pain from stiffness in your body by warming up your muscles, making it easier to move, according to McCall.

"The motion can elevate tissue temperature making it easier for muscles to lengthen and shorten as temperature increases, muscles move more easily," says McCall.

In addition, walking can increase levels of certain types of chemicals in your brain known scientifically as neurotransmitters which help your nervous system work effectively. This can include a type of neurotransmitter that reduces pain.

"The first few minutes of walking might be uncomfortable but after five to seven minutes the body warms up, blood is flowing, and neurotransmitter production increases helping reduce pain," says McCall.

For this reason, walking is often recommended to alleviate pain and reduce disability in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions that is, pain that affects the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves such as lower back pain.

There is also evidence of patients who are hospitalized with chronic musculoskeletal pain in the spine or limbs reporting less pain the more they walked.

Walking has been found to reduce your risk of cardiovascular events that's any incident which causes damage to your heart, such as a heart attack by 31%.

This was evident even at a moderate pace of about 2 miles per hour and at distances of just over one mile a day for five days a week, or 5.5 miles per week.

But the longer and faster you walk, the greater the benefits and protection of your heart. A 2017 study of more than 50,000 adults in the UK, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that people who walked at an average or quick pace between five and 10 hours a week were about 24% less likely to die from heart disease compared to slow walkers.

Aerobic exercise including walking can help you feel more relaxed, reduce stress, and fight depression.

The reason aerobic workouts lift our spirits seems related to their ability to reduce levels of natural stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, according to this 2015 study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science.

Just a 30-minute walk is enough to lift the mood of someone suffering from major depressive disorder, according to a 2005 study published in the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

And a 2019 study published in the official journal of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) found that three hours of exercise a week, no matter the type of activity, decreased the risk of depression in people who had already experienced feeling depressed.

Walking has also been linked to a decreased risk of mortality, or a longer life expectancy. And the longer and faster you walk, the more it increases your life expectancy.

This 2011 study published by the British Medical Association followed 27,738 participants aged 40 to 79years for a 13 year period and found that participants who walked for more than one hour a day had a longer life expectancy than participants who walked for less than one hour a day.

Following 50,225 walkers over 14 years, another 2018 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine looked at the association of walking at a faster pace with factors like overall causes of death, cardiovascular disease, and death from cancer.

The researchers found that the quicker you walk, the lower your risk of overall death. For example, walking at an average pace resulted in a 20% reduced risk of overall death when compared to walking at a slow pace. And walking at a brisk or fast pace at least 4 miles per hour reduced the risk by 24% compared to walking at a slow pace.
