State and local health officials reported that 44 people have been infected with COVID-19 in relation to an outbreak at a Greenville nursing home.
The outbreak occurred at East Carolina Rehab and Wellness, 2575 W. Fifth St., according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. A total of 34 residents and 10 staff members tested positive for the virus.
Its unclear when the outbreak began or what is being done to contain it. The Pitt County Health Department referred questions to the nursing home. A manager at the facility on Wednesday declined a request for an interview. Its website on Wednesday was still reporting it had no cases of COVID-19.
The DHHS report of ongoing outbreaks in congregated living settings first reported the outbreak on Tuesday. The report is updated at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. The outbreak was not included in Fridays update.
Pitt County saw a spike in COVID cases on Thursday and Friday of last week. Twenty-nine people tested on Thursday were positive for the virus and 23 tested on Friday were positive. The previous one-day high for positive tests was 13 on May 20.
The majority but not all of the positive tests on Thursday and Friday were related to the outbreak, Pitt County Deputy Health Deputy Director Amy Hattem said. Fourteen people also tested positive on Saturday.
The county has seen a significant increase in positive test results in the last week. It reported 56 new cases between Friday and Monday, bringing the cumulative total to 392. That number increased another 30 to 422 by 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Hattem said the health department is working with the facility to put measures in place to protect the residents and staff.
It is the second outbreak at a nursing facility in Pitt County. Two staff members and one resident were infected at Ayden Court Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in May. After 28 days with no new cases it is no longer considered an outbreak, Hattem said.
The news comes as the state legislature passed another bill Wednesday to overturn parts of Gov. Roy Coopers executive order that keep certain businesses closed to discourage the spread of COVID-19.
As with previous legislation sent to him seeking to reopen bars, Cooper is likely to veto the latest measure, which also ends the shuttering of gyms and fitness clubs.
The House voted on a largely party-line vote of 69-50 in favor of the measure written by Republicans, many of whom have been critical of the Democratic governors slow pace to loosen restrictions on the state economy. It would allow the fitness centers and gyms to reopen indoors at 50% capacity and require they follow social distancing and cleanliness rules.
The bill also contains language from a bill Cooper vetoed last week that would let bars reopen but only outdoors and give restaurants already allowed to serve dine-in customers additional outdoor seating options. Coopers veto message said that bill would make it difficult for his administration and local governments to re-close these industries should there be a surge in cases possibly later this year.
Coopers office didnt immediately comment Wednesday on the new measure that passed the Senate earlier this week and now heads to his desk. But he expressed skepticism about the changes earlier this week, raising the likelihood of another veto.
He has said the extended closings are based on science health officials have said sitting for a long time in bars and intense exercise within indoor gyms make patrons more susceptible to virus infections. But operators of bars and gyms closed since March are pleading to reopen to save their businesses and rehire laid-off workers.
The Senate authors of the new bill said Tuesday they addressed Coopers concerns by giving the governor authority to shut down the establishments under his emergency powers, but only with the agreement of the Council of State.
I believe this bill is a common sense (bill) and a good middle ground, said Rep. Kyle Hall, a Stokes County Republican. I believe this fully addresses the governors concerns.
Some Senate Democrats complained earlier this week that this condition couldnt be met during this pandemic because Republicans compose six of the councils 10 spots, including Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, who is challenging Cooper this fall. House Minority Leader Darren Jackson of Wake County portrayed the measure as a reflection of the beliefs of many Republicans who dont take the pandemic seriously enough.
The latest efforts come as North Carolina reached another all-time high in virus-related hospitalizations on Wednesday at 780. Several hundred intensive care unit beds still remain available in hospitals, however. More than 1,050 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have died.
Yet here we are taking away the ability of our scientists and ability of our public health experts to do something about it, Jackson said while urging his Democratic colleagues to vote no. Four Democrats in the chamber joined all Republicans in voting for the bill, but the final margin signals that bill supporters lack enough votes for an override.
The number of positive cases reported since the pandemic began now exceeds 38,000. State Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy Cohen said Wednesday that her agency was marshaling testing and tracing resources this week to Mecklenburg, Alamance, Wake, Duplin, Johnston, Durham, Forsyth and Lee counties.
The reopen legislation can be viewed as an alternate pathway for bar and gym owners who have sued to attempt to throw out Coopers order as unconstitutional. Theyve been unsuccessful in court so far.
Moore had scheduled a veto override vote for Wednesday on the bar and restaurant measure that Cooper blocked last week. But he took the measure off the calendar, saying he was hopeful that the updated bill with gyms could get stronger support.

All gyms and fitness classes have been closed for the past 11 weeks in the UK to slow the spread of Covid-19. The earliest theyre allowed to re-open is July 4, though a confirmed date is unclear as no official government advice has yet been issued.
We do know that when they do open however, gyms and studios will need to abide by the strict social distancing and hygiene guidelines, much like retail stores and hair salons. Previously, you might recall attending a class with 25 people in a small room, being in rather close contact with them (often having to work with them) and sharingequipment. In a post-Covid-19 world however, this will all need to be vastly different to keep staff and gym goers safe, which means everything from yoga to boxing will be affected.
The new generation of spinning has been spearheaded by the likes of Psycle and 1Rebel and sees riders sit in one room for up to an hour riding a bike to dance tracks and with disco lighting, often with a sweat towel at your seat provided by the company. At 1Rebel, classes hold as many as 85 bikes, and are often all filled at its peak time sessions due to popularity. Psycle operated a waiting list which saw people on it get notified 10 minutes before a class if a space had become available.
Previously youd have to squeeze between bikes at these studios to navigate the room, such was their proximity to each other, whereas now, bikes will need to have a minimum of 2 metres between them, meaning less bikes and therefore less availability overall.
Our classes ranged from 20-60 people before, but were looking at only 50% occupancy once we re-open, said Rhian Stephenson, founder of Psycle London. This means that waiting lists are likely to be longer than they previously were. Weve always had lengthy gaps between our classesto allow for a deep clean, and our ventilation is brilliant - we have completely fresh air circulating every 5-7 minutes, said Jason De Savary, founder of Core Collective.
High Intensity Interval Training has long been popular thanks to its fat-burning effectiveness, and innovative offerings such as F45 and Rowbots classes have thrived. While sweating in a small room with up to 20 other exercisers has been the norm, going forward, these cardio classes will have to adapt to suit the new normal.
Rowbots signature class sees the class split in half, with clients alternating between a rowing machine and weighted exercises, all of which are shared with the other half of the class throughout. While it hasn't confirmed what changes it'll make on re-opening, it's likely it'll operate smaller classes to avoid equipment being shared in the same class.
Similarly, boxing classes where gloves were issued to attendees will need to be rethought. As a way of combating the issue of sharing equipment and minimising risks, many will likely decide to sell their equipment. 'We're going to sell 'fit kits' so that people have the choice to bring their own small equipment to the class,' confirmed a spokesperson for Frame.
Much like boxing and rowing, yoga requires equipment, and the sharing of mats will need to be rethought before any yoga classes re-open. Deep cleans of the room will need to be done prior to any new class and attendees arriving, so a less busy daily schedule will be needed to allow for this. As well as this, yoga and stretching requires lots of room, so any mats will need to be spread out to ensure social distancing can be maintaining, meaning less space available. As such, the availability of yoga classes will have less availability than before.
Our class capacity ranges from 8 to 37 depending on the studio, and were making plans to run at 50% capacity so that everyone can have their own marked out space, advised Frame. 'We are hoping to launch an open-air studio soon, too.'

The doctor said its something he has seen on his own diet plan, the Fast 800 diet.
Dubbed the new 5:2 diet, the Fast 800 plan is based on eating just 800 calories a day to lose weight.
Mosley has many books on the subject, including a recipe book which Dr Clare Bailey, his wife, helped to write.
For safe and rapid weight loss I recommend The Fast 800 Recipe Book by Dr Clare Bailey (my wife) who does the recipes with a leading food writer, the expert added on Twitter after appearing on This Morning.
The doctor said its especially important to lose belly fat, which can affect your blood pressure, blood sugar levels and more.
He said that rapid weight loss is becoming more accepted as the newer studies show it can be successful long term.
Mosley told Phillip that he hopes the pandemic might be the catalyst for people making a change to their lifestyles and deciding to get fit and well, and even commented on the health of the Prime Minister.
He explained that it will be a priority following Boris Johnsons experience with the virus and being at deaths door as an overweight man.
The expert also urged viewers to focus on strengthening their muscles as well as losing weight with exercise, as muscle mass decreases as you age. Mosley said he can now do 100 press-ups at the age of 63, so its never too late to get started.

10 healthy foods that are also low carb – Times of India

There are two types of carbs - simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are found in foods like sugar, honey, pasta, bread, fruit juice, while complex carbohydrates are found in whole grains, corn, peas, whole-wheat pasta/bread, sweet potatoes and some veggies.
Simple carbs, when ingested by the body, quickly turn into glucose while complex carbs take longer to get converted into glucose. That's why when you have simple carbs, you get instant energy as there is a sudden spike in the blood sugar level. But simple carbs don't keep you fuller for longer and thus you end up feeling hungry soon.
Another factor that makes carb good or bad is if they have fibre. For example, an apple has carbs but it also has ample fibre, which makes it super healthy. Simple carbs have their nutrients removed, which spikes the blood sugar levels, making it unhealthy for weight watchers and people with high blood sugar.
Here is a list of 10 healthy foods that are low in carbs

At any given time, Terrence Bilodeau can tell you his exact net worth.
The 35-year-old real estate appraiser based in Fort Worth, Texas, checks it monthly to see how far he is from his goal of $10 million. He's well on his way: As of January 2020, when CNBC Make It reviewed his finances,he's worth about $1.3 million, he says. He expects to hit $3 million in the next two to four years and $10 million by the time he's 50.
Growing up with a single mother, Bilodeau never felt financially secure, as the family struggled to make ends meet. Today, heviews money as a way to make his life better. He invests most of his income in real estate and the stock market. The little bit of discretionary spending he does allow himself includes hiring landscapers to care for his yard, a housekeeper to clean his house and a monthly membership to a local spa where he gets massages. It's worth it, he says, so he can spend what little down time he does have with friends and family, or just relaxing, he says.
Terrence Bilodeau stands outside his home in Fort Worth, Texas.
CNBC Make It
Not that he has much. Bilodeau works seven days a week running his business, and he never takes vacations because he doesn't want to lose any income. Any time he takes off is time he's not getting paid. He plans to relax once he achieves more of his goals, which includes someday starting a family.
Here's a look at how Bilodeau built his career in real estate and how he spends his money.
Bilodeau brought in a combined $370,000 last year as a real estate appraiser and realtor, and paid himself a salary of $280,000 from those earnings. As an appraiser, he works on behalf of banks to determine current and accurate property values.
His income is largely determined by how much time he puts in because he works for himself and charges per appraisal. Appraisals typically cost about $450, but he charges up to $2,500 for complex projects. The most he's ever billed in a month is $50,000, but most months it's around $30,000.
Terrence Bilodeau opens the door at one of his rental properties.
CNBC Make It
Bilodeau works between 65 and 75 hours a week, writing up appraisals during the weekdays and driving to sites on the weekends. On Saturday and Sunday, "I can get to a lot of houses really quickly with no traffic," he says. "It makes me more productive."
He never expected to earn so much in this business. He first became interested in the occupation nearly a decade ago when he was working in insurance and finishing up his marketing degree at the University of Texas at Arlington. He was unhappy with his job and couldn't find any work in marketing, so when a friend invited him to tag along on a few appraisals, he jumped at the chance.
He enjoyed the work and began training under his friend to become a certified appraiser. In 2011, his first year as a trainee, Bilodeau brought in just $17,000. But he knew he could do better. He set a goal to grow his income to $80,000 a year, which he exceeded in 2012 when he started working for himself.
There's really no ceiling. I can work more hours and get more work from more clients and higher fees.
"In my first year, when I billed $145,000, I was pretty happy with the outcome," he says. "I thought, There's really no ceiling. I can work more hours and get more work from more clients and charge higher fees. And that's what I did."
Growing up in Florida, Bilodeau's circumstances looked starkly different. His mom moved the family around a lot and "there were times when we didn't have enough money to pay rent or utilities or our electricity would get cut off," he says. They moved to Fort Worth a few times to stay with his grandmother, and Bilodeau's mom and sister currently live nearby. He ended up returning to Fort Worth by himself when he was 19 at the suggestion of his uncle, who wanted Bilodeau to get into building houses with him. Bilodeau still hopes to go into building in the future.

He struggled with his weight and body image as a teen, which affected his confidence in everything he did, including school. "In middle school and high school, I didn't have good grades," he recalls. But around the time he was 18, he decided to start losing weight, and ended up losing 90 pounds.
As the pounds came off, his confidence grew. "At the time, a lot of people said it was difficult to lose weight," he says. But once he did, "I thought, If I could do something that everybody thinks is so difficult, then there's probably other things that I can accomplish."
That inspired him to give school a second chance. He left his job at RadioShack and got his GED (he had dropped out of high school in 10th grade). After that, he enrolled in Miami Dade community college and eventually finished up his bachelor's degree in Texas.
When Bilodeau exceeded his $80,000 goal during his first year working for himself, he wanted to celebrate by buying himself a Tesla. But the bank wouldn't approve him for a loan because he didn't have enough credit history.
Instead, he used the cash he had on hand to buy a second home to use as his first rental property. Even then, he knew he wanted to buy more. He had met people who owned dozens of rental properties, bringing in thousands in passive income, and he wanted to do the same. As of January 2020, he owns 12 properties, including the house he lives in and one vacant lot, worth about $2.8 million altogether, and he has about $1.7 million in real estate debt.

His ultimate goal is to bring in $250,000 a year in passive income from real estate. Originally, he aimed to own 50 homes, but after doing the math, he realized he could meet that goal with just 20. Owning more would be too cumbersome, he says.
As of June 2020, he brings in around $15,500 per month from rent on his rental properties, which is slightly less than last year when he made $15,800 a month. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, "I reduced rent to keep some tenants in place and to make sure to attract tenants quickly," he says.

After paying mortgages, property taxes, homeowners insurance and other expenses, he nets just under $2,000 a month from the properties.
Another perk of being a landlord is that tenants sometimes turn into clients when they decide to buy their own homes, Bilodeau says. One former tenant hired him to help her buy her first home for $640,000, and Bilodeau earned a 3% commission.
Although Bilodeau works for himself, he keeps his business and personal expenses separate. He works with his accountant to come up with a salary to pay himself each month: a $10,000 pre-tax salary plus $10,000 in dividends.
He also gave himself another $40,000 at the end of 2019. "I had too much money sitting in my business account and wanted to make it available so I could trade more [stocks] in 2020 rather than have it sitting," he says.
Here's a look at how he spends his monthly income, as of January 2020. This includes just his personal expenses, not what he puts toward his appraisal business or the mortgage, maintenance and general expenses of therental properties.

Because Bilodeau works for himself and owns so many properties, having proper insurance is key. His $881 monthly life insurance payment includes disability insurance, term life insurance and multiple universal life policies. It has a cash value worth $37,000, and the death benefits would pay out enough to cover all of his real estate debt. Bilodeau acknowledges that he probably could have found a cheaper policy, but he is content to stick with what he has for now. His umbrella policy provides extra liability coverage in case anything happens at one of the properties he owns.

Bilodeau doesn't have traditional health or dental insurance. Instead, he pays $45 a month to Christian Healthcare Ministries, which provides catastrophic coverage, and he covers his bi-annual dental cleanings out of pocket, which cost $175 twice a year, or about $29 a month.
Bilodeau contributes to a SEP IRA account to save for retirement and as of January, he planned to put in $40,000 for the 2019 tax year. Any extra money he earns stays in his business account to help cover unexpected expenses. He doesn't like to keep cash on hand for personal use, though, which means he doesn't have a traditional cash emergency fund. He'd rather invest it in stocks or real estate so that the money is working for him.
I get more calls to do appraisals than I can service.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Bilodeau's business has remained stable. "There has been an increase in demand for refinancing as interest rates have declined," he says. Additionally, he's seen a ton of new construction sold throughout the pandemic, which all need appraisals. "I get more calls to do appraisals than I can service," he says.
His personal expenses have shifted a bit: He bought a new car, an Audi, and he's gotten more into trading options on stocks because of the current volatility. Before, he invested about $5,000 each month and tried to see if he could grow it. Now heonly contributes around $2,500 per month since he's already managed to earn such a high return. In 2020, he expects to bring in as much from trading as he does from appraisals.
As he continues to work toward his goal of a $10 million net worth, Bilodeau keeps setting the bar higher and higher. Looking back, he says he wishes he'd known earlier on that money is easier to make than you think. "I learned that by watching other people and seeing their success and realizing that I can mimic that success myself," he says.

words Alexa Wang
Youre all in.
You heard about all the celebrities whove usedthe keto diet, from Halle Berry to LeBron James. You figured that if it wasgood enough for them, its good enough for you.
Your friends couldnt stop singing the praisesof their ketogenic diets, and they kept telling you how much weight theyvelost. They certainly do look good.
You were sick of dragging all that extra weight around, and were more than ready for all of the other benefits attributed to keto. After all, who could argue with heart health, better brain function, increased focus and more energy?
But you started the keto diet last week, and youcant stop wondering: why am I soexhausted all of the time? Stop worrying, and have another serving of baconand eggs. (Extra bacon, please!)
When you start feeling tired after beginning theketo diet, thats actually a good thing. It means the diet is working.
Why does that happen and how long will itlast? Read on.
The keto diet causes major changes in the wayyour body processes, uses and stores the food you eat. That, in turn, causesmajor changes in the way youre going to feel at least, at first.
To understand how that happens, its importantto learn a little more about ketosis and the keto diet, explained more fully atDietHive.
The keto diets name actually stems from whathappens in your body when you go low-carb, high fat. Here are the key facts ina nutshell.
So in short, keto is a low-carb diet designed toforce your body into ketosis. In that metabolic state, the body burns fat youhave stored up over time, and doesnt have excess glucose to store as new fat.
And the name keto diet is really just shorthand for ketogenic diet, describing the process by which the body burns fat and the process by which you lose weight.
According to TheHealthy, The keto diet is a huge change for your body.Instead of eating a high-carb diet, youre eating lots of fats and proteinwhile avoiding most carbs, entering a state of ketosis as a result. All of asudden, the body has to adapt to a complete diet, and has to find a differentmethod of obtaining the energy it needs.
Thats a difficult process for the body toadjust to, and it can make you exhausted for a while. But its not abnormal. In fact, its to be expected and theres even an informal name for it: the ketoflu. (The more scientific name for it is keto induction, and its sometimescalled ketogenic fatigue.)
Its not really a flu, and its not caused by avirus. But the symptoms are quite similar. Fatigue and weakness, headache, nausea and vomiting are the most common ones. You might also notice musclecramps, constipation, a rash or even bad breath. (Bad breath? One ketone thebody produces is acetone, which you may recognize as a common and smelly solvent.)
You commonly experience the keto flu, and itstelltale low energy levels, when your body is in the process of enteringketosis. Since your body is using up all of its stored glucose and youre notadding more via carbs, you end up with low levels of insulin in yourbloodstream.
Thats a good thing for fat burning and weightloss, but it also causes you to urinate a lot. And in the process, you lose alot of bodily fluid, sodium and potassium. As you might have guessed, thatmeans you may get dehydrated and weak.
There are three pieces of good news, though.First, the keto flu means that youre entering ketosis, the key to the dietssuccess. Second, it doesnt last all that long. According to Diet Hive, most people only experience the keto flu for a week or two, although it canlast as long as a month for some.
Third, in many people, ketogenic fatigue onlylasts a few days and there are thingsyou can do to feel better even faster.
If you know that a problem is imminent, you canprepare for it. In the case of the keto flu, that means being ready to supplementor alter your diet during the first few weeks.
A good first step is to be sure that youre drinking at least 2-3 quarts of fluids every day. It doesnt have to be just water (or flavored water); you can also drink tea, broth or diet soda, although you should keep your caffeine consumption to reasonable levels. If the symptoms worsen during the day or you get a headache, drink a cup of water with a teaspoon of salt mixed in and you should feel better.
Its also important to get enough electrolytes like salt, magnesium and potassium, but avoid the sugar-based drinks you can buy at the store. Get them from salted broth and keto-friendly foods like avocado and nuts, and dont skimp on salt at mealtime. Many electrolyte-heavy foods will also help you avoid constipation.
Almost everyone has to endure the keto flu whenthey start a ketogenic diet. Dont panic; its worth it. Before you know it,youll be enjoying that extra energy and focus they promised, as you watchthe weight fall off.

Ah, live sports. Remember those? Good times.
But hopefully (knocks furiously on wood) well see them again, and soon. Schools across the country are releasing their return-to-campus plans, and athletes are slowly trickling back. So, yeah, excuse us holding fast to the smallest sliver of optimism because, like, what other hope do we have?
Anyway, that hope also means thinking about sports again. Not if theyll happen, but, you know, actual sports questions: starting lineups, new additions, yada yada yada. Lets tackle some of those as they specifically apply to UNC, in mailbag form. As always, thanks to everyone who submitted questions.
Will there be a perceptible hangover from last season? What is a realistic expectation for next years team? Bob D.
Bob, thank you for phrasing your question juuuuust vaguely enough that it could theoretically apply to both the football and mens basketball teams. Talk...

Catherine Erdal who survived a brain injury tells her story.
They rely entirely on volunteer support and work hard to raise funds to support their members.
Brain injuries can occur as a result of illness or injury and the effects can have a devastating effect on the lives of the individual and their families.
Once discharged from hospital or residential care, the reality of life back in the community can be daunting, lonely and frightening for survivors and their families.
Read Catherine's story which is truly inspiring and Headway are delighted to have her as an active member of their group.
"My name is Catherine Erdal. I am a happy, thriving, active, intelligent woman with goals and dreams who once experienced a debilitating stroke.
"At school I was very shy and experienced bullying. My escape from the bullying was to bury myself in writing poems of which several were published; I was and still am an avid reader.
"I also found escape in making friends with animals (horses and dogs). I always looked forward to going to college, so I studied hard and experienced a variety of further education establishments including Sunderland University (Psychology), Norwich University (Teaching), Hull University (e-learning).
"I had an exciting and varied career. Personnel Manager for a major cosmetics manufacturer, English Teacher (in Belize, Germany and Turkey), IT Manager for the NHS in Colchester, Lecturer on e-learning for the University of Essex, Senior Manager IT for Cambridge NHS, Chair or e-learning NHS UK Government Team.
"My voluntary work focused on working with teenagers. I studied hard and I reaped the rewards of a great career.
"My family consists of two grown children Rhiannon and Alistair (both currently studying in university), an (ex) husband who is a human rights lawyer.
"I have wonderful friends who I consider my family.
"Some years ago I lost both of my parents within a very short time of each other, shortly thereafter I spent six months in various hospitals/trauma centres.
"I had collapsed suddenly and without warning. It was very fortunate that my daughter was with me at the time, she quickly called for an ambulance.
"I immediately began my 50/50 chance of living or dying.
"Loss of consciousness, acute confused state, subarachnoid hemorrhage, significant expressive dysphasia, dense right sided weakness, stress incontinence.
"I spent months of going in and out of consciousness, long periods of sleep and short periods of being awake.
"It was the most frightening experience of my life, I was in shock and felt so vulnerable for so long.
"Today is a different story thanks to the incredible NHS, my family, my friends, my helpers, my community and my faith.
"Above all it is thanks to Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay that despite still having limited mobility, dexterity and speech, I am active and busy.
"Swimming, walking, gardening, rock wall climbing, hiking, shopping are just a few of those activities, some of which do of course require someone to help me and I am so very grateful to those dedicated people in my life who graciously provide the help I need.
"I have over the past two years worked very hard to lose weight and so far I have lost three stone with the help of Weight Watchers.
"What is in my future? Love, friendship, family, physical and mental improvement, new activities, new challenges and above all continued hope and gratitude."
Headway Lancaster and Morecambe are currently recruiting volunteers to help with a variety of activities and would love to hear from you.
Due to Covid-19 their usual fundraising events have been cancelled and they desperately need help to raise funds.

Knowing your BMR is crucial for losing weight — here’s how to find yours – CNET

BMR can be helpful is losing weight is one of your goals.
No matter what your goals, when it comes to nutrition and body recomposition, knowledge is power. And understanding a few key principles, like how to track macros, calories and how to exercise more effectively is especially important if weight loss is your goal.
If you want to lose body fat, gain muscle or maintain your weight, an important metric you should know about is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Your BMR is the minimum number of calories that your body needs to function at rest. You may think you only need energy to exercise or complete tasks, but your body has a specific energy need just to complete basic functions like breathing and regulating your hormone levels.
Your BMR is not in itself a tool for weight loss, but it can be a helpful starting point for figuring out how to adjust your diet and exercise goals. The problem with a lot of diets and weight loss programs out there is that they are "one size fits all." But every person is different, so taking one meal plan and applying it to multiple people just does not work. Your BMR is calculated based on several different factors that are personal to you, like your age, gender, current weight and activity level.
Keep reading to find out about what BMR is, how to calculate it and how it can help you with your nutrition and exercise goals.
BMR calculators use several different factors, like age and gender, to determine your BMR.
Many people use BMR as a starting point to calculate their daily calorie needs and how to best adjust them to reach their goals. In fact, many macro calculators, like the popular IIFYM, incorporate BMR into their calculations for telling you about your calorie intake and macro needs based on your goals.
One common misconception about BMR is that it is the amount of calories your body burns at rest, but that is a different metric -- Resting metabolic rate or (RMR). Your BMR is what energy your body needs to perform basic functions, while RMR is the amount of calories that your body burns while at rest. Some people use the measurements interchangeably, but they aren't necessarily the same thing.
There are many different calculators available online that can calculate your estimated BMR. Note that some of them will ask you to enter your body fat percentage, which many people do not know. If you don't, you can make an estimate or use the images provided (like IIFYM does) to guess.
Some of the best BMR calculators:
Once you start learning about your BMR, you will likely also find information on TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) since BMR is often calculated first to find TDEE.
Your BMR tells you your calorie needs, when you take that number plus how much you burn every day during normal activity and exercise, you get your TDEE. So really, TDEE is the number that you work off of for figuring out how to adjust macros or calories for body composition goals, according to IIFYM.
Weight loss is tricky, but using calculators that factor in your BMR are helpful for taking a more customized approach for your calories and macronutrient needs. The way that most macros and BMR-based calculators work is by factoring in your TDEE with your goals.
If you want to lose weight, you have to be in a calorie deficit, meaning the calculator will set your daily food intake to equal less calories than what you burn. Sometimes when you take an online quiz to find this number, you will be asked how fast you'd like to lose weight. Then the calorie deficit will be adjusted accordingly. The faster you want results, the more extreme you will have to be with cutting calories. But many experts say that slow and steady is optimal compared to trying to lose a lot of weight quickly.
If you want to maintain your weight instead of lose or gain, then knowing your BMR and TDEE can help you know how many calories you should aim to consume each day to maintain your weight. On the flipside of weight loss is gaining muscle mass. This too requires that you strategically approach your nutrition and add calories into your day (likely in the form of protein and carbs) to make sure you can gain muscle.
