In 2009 I was shown an app for my laptop computer that would sync with my bike computer, which collected heaps of information on every ride. Strava offers performance analytics that allows riders to compete virtually by comparing times and biometric data (distance, miles, speed, elevation ascent/descent, heart rate, power, and a topo map) that showed the exact route just ridden. Cyclists across the globe started using it for its tracking of progress. It is now a mainstay for almost every cyclist, runner, hiker, and now it tracks fitness classes. The app allows us, endurance enthusiasts, to learn how we stack up to our peers and see where and how hard our friends are going. The cell phone app allows you to track all your exercises without a fancy cycling computer or an expensive watch, Fitbit, or any number of fitness tracking devices. With over 42 million users, Strava has become the most widely used fitness apps for cyclists and runners. Is it the Facebook of fitness? The CEOs dont mind that comparison, but they strive to keep the core values in helping people stay fit and create community. Strava wasnt the first Social-fitness app, nor is it the largest. ASICs Runkeeper has 50 million users, and Under Armours three fitness apps MyFitnessPal, Endomondo and MapMyFitness have more than three times the users as Strava. But no brand is more closely associated with social fitness than Strava.
How it all began
Michael Horvath and his Harvard college rowing teammate, Mark Gainey, jumped into the fitness tracking software after their initial exercise app, Kana Software, didnt materialize. Strava (the word means strive in Horvaths native Swedish) was born in 2008. By the mid-2000s Facebook was practically on every cell phone on earth with oversharing mandatory, Google had mapped the world, and Global Positioning System (GPS) units and power meters were a requirement for every serious cyclist.
If its not on Strava, it didnt happen
Support Local JournalismDonate
This a common statement from many Strava users to a friend that didnt get their ride or run recorded. I remembered doing an epic mountain bike ride a few years ago and had forgotten to charge up my bike computer the night before. It lost power an hour into the ride. I had also left my cell phone at home. Therefore, that four-hour, 45-mile ride with 4,450 feet of climbing did not happen, according to my Strava friends. You only make that mistake once. I give and get Kudos to people that I follow on Strava. On any given day, you could get a dozen or more Kudos for a ride from followers on Strava. Its what you do on this app. We all like getting the attaboy after posting a ride. Those Kudos are essential and are where the science begins with Strava.
The research
Research has shown that Strava is onto something about the value of a social network for fitness and that it isnt only about comparing performance. Two studies published in 2015 and 2017 looked at how social feedback encourages users to increase their interaction on a given platform. The 2015 study collected activity data on 4,500 Strava users and found that social interactions (Kudos, Comments) spurred users to post more activities. The 2017 study, published in the journal Health Education and Behavior, went further, finding that activities posted on Strava were eight times more likely to receive some form of social feedback than a post on Twitter. Thats no surprise since Strava focuses on fitness, and people join Strava for that reason. The other social media apps have rather negative responses to people posting workouts or endurance activities. Just ask any professional or elite level athlete about their posts, and they often get negative feedback. Trolls tend to make snark remarks and insults to a persons post, and this type of activity has caused some serious emotional distress in many athletes. Strava doesnt seem to have an issue with this type of activity.
The healthy culture of Strava in a time of social distancing
Strava has gone from cult status for professional and elite level cyclists to mainstream, all with its vocabulary that is consistent. To Strava-cide, a ride means that you go off the planned route to capture a KOM or QOM (king/queen of the mountain). These terms have been used in professional cycling races like the Tour de France since 1903. Every famous climb is named and rated (category 4 (easiest) to category 1, which is 3000 5000 feet and then the above category, which is anything above 5000 feet). Anyone can name their ride, neighborhood loop, climb up their driveway or out and back ride to the park, and have them saved in Strava for all to see. Warning; once a post of a new segment or hill climb is seen on Strava, with you on the top of the leader board, expect to get knocked off and move into second place soon because one of your Strava followers will no doubt go get that KOM.
Stay fit, have some fun, and maybe compete with yourself or others and create a sense of camaraderie. If you like to ride, run, or hike, post it on Strava and see how much fun you can have. You will be amazed at how many people will give you kudos and help you to stay fit.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Minnesota is getting ready to turn the dial again in reopening the state.
Next up gyms. Gov. Tim Walz is loosening COVID-19 restrictions to allow fitness centers to reopen at 25% capacity on Wednesday.
RELATED: Gov. Tim Walz Says State Can Turn Dial Again, To Allow Indoor Dining, Limited Gym Use
When Life Time in Edina at Southdale reopens, check-ins will be touch free with an app. Staff will wear masks and be given temperature checks.
Masks are available for guests, but they are not required for workouts. The exception is the Life Time in Minneapolis where masks are required indoors in the city.
Ideally wearing a mask when they enter the club is something to do and the same thing when they leave the club, Edina Life Time director Shawn Severson said.
Its hard to miss the signage all over the health club, reminding guests to social distance. Every other machine will be turned off to allow for the six feet rule.
What were seeing at clubs at this time that are already open [in other states], theyre running about 50 to 60% of what it was prior to COVID, Severson said. So even though half the amount of treadmills are available, were seeing half the amount of usage.
Swimming, group fitness classes those are still happening, too.
Classes are all reservation based, Severson said, So well do that to maintain social distancing and it also allows us to ensure when that person shows up they have that spot for that class.
Enhanced cleaning will be happening around the clock, including at night when the club is closed. If there is a confirmed COVID-19 case, guests would be alerted and Life Time follows the direction of state health officials.
Life Time said it will still continue its on demand classes which are free to the public online.
Life Time has already reopened around 60 health clubs across the country.

Juniper Swim & Fitness Center reopens after more than 2 months of COVID-19 related closure – Bend Bulletin

Juniper Swim & Fitness Center in Bend welcomed back guests Monday after being closed for more than two months because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To maintain physical distance and allow for time in the day to sanitize the facility, the Bend Park & Recreation District established a reservation system to limit the number of people inside at one time.
This week, 430 reservations have been made for fitness classes and gym time, said Sue Glenn, the park districts recreation services manager
Some classes are already meeting capacity.
Its a real personal decision to come back, Glenn said. Weve missed everybody, and were psyched we have a strong reopening this week.
With Deschutes County getting the go-ahead to move into Phase 2 reopening, the district is now also working on reopening pools, which still remain closed.
Glenn said the plan is to restrict lap swimming to one person per lane, and have a one-way walking pattern to keep from crowding. As with fitness classes, people will have to reserve time in the pool online.
Before pools can open, the district has to hire back lifeguards who were laid off, finalize a plan for how to regulate open-swim sessions and make a decision on whether to open locker rooms for showering, Glenn said.
Monitoring capacity and figuring out how to sanitize in between showering is a challenge, Glenn said.
Glenn said more should be announced about opening pools at the end of the week.
A lot of dedicated swimmers have been waiting, she said.

Think about agility, and calisthenics, which uses ones own body weight, is what comes to mind. While most other exercises require the use of external equipment and gym memberships, calisthenics training is absolutely free. It all depends on what the practitioner wants to achieve in terms of fitness. Giving us proof of how core strength matters for taking on calisthenics is cricketer Harbhajan Singh. In a recent Instagram post, Singh can be seen performing a plank, a pose that requires core strength.
Take a look.
Much like weight-based training exercises, calisthenic exercises increase physical fitness with little or no additional equipment. Rather than using barbells, dumbbells, plates or machines, taking the body through different motions helps it to become ripped and stronger.
While for beginners, calisthenics are more about being able to build muscle strength with as many repetitions one is able to do over time, it is about increasing muscle endurance, which means how long a practitioner can maintain the pose.
When ones body weight is used as a resistance exercise, it helps improve functional fitness, an essential requirement for basic movements like push, pull, swing and jump. By building more endurance, a ripped physique, a much fitter frame is achievable.
In fact, calisthenics is equally about speed and strength. Besides, the body weight resistance exercise applies less pressure on the joints when compared to gym equipment like bar-bells. This means the joints are worked out without being prone to injury, provided the correct technique is practiced.
As per a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, calisthenics exercises have the ability to combat weakness and frailty. Done regularly, these exercises build muscle strength and muscle mass and preserve bone density, independence, and vitality with age, it stated.
From being highly adaptive and customisable to helping improve coordination and flexibility, calisthenics is the way forward for working out just about anywhere.

Here together, in this safe space, in the intimacy of my home, she says, I hope you widen the aperture of whats possible for yourself. Thats what we do here. Thats what we do here. In Robins home, thats what we do.
Robins home is also, at the moment, a television studio that is broadcasting to a Peloton bike in my home. I ordered the device in March, when weeks of anxiety annealed into American lockdown. I am across the city from her. Both of us have cool plants next to our bikes. Were in 23,000 other peoples homes, around the world, too. And where else are we? Were at the gym.
Read: The fitness trend that is a mirror
If Robin had a class at the actual, regular gym and you stumbled into it without warning, youd never stumble out: The wattage would fry you. Teachers on the major fitness platforms are, as a rule, highly telegenic; theyre broadcast talent, and their charisma has to carry. But RobinRobin will get your heart beating three times a second, cackle, cue the tears (hers and yours), and be laughing again, all by the end of this Coldplay song. Thats what we do here.
Peloton has been very successful at putting expensive fitness hardware in peoples homes, and the pandemic has compounded that advantage, at least among those who can still afford both the hardware and the fitness. Sales were up 66 percent last quarter. To the extent that for so many years there was no competition, it was almost mind-boggling, Tom Cortese told me. He is the companys chief operating officer and one of its five founders, and lately his responsibilities have included shipping out the A/V equipment for emergency mini-studios to a handful of instructors so they can continue to teach new classes from their basement or living room.
Think about a swan, right? the running instructor Jess Sims, who is broadcasting Peloton classes from her studio apartment, explained to me. Above the water, the swan looks graceful and clear and calm and everything is beautiful. And then under the water, its going a mile a minutethe legs, theyre doing all these crazy things. And thats kind of my apartment.
At the other end of the production-value spectrum, theres Zoomall legs, no swan. In March, every yoga and Pilates instructor youve ever encountered, every dance teacher, every personal trainer, plus a great number of people who arent any of these but influence as if they were, made the jump to Zoom, to Instagram Live, to YouTube. This flourishing was a playful counterpoint to the surrounding catastrophe. One early-lockdown weekend, I took a free dance class from a teacher who seemed to be in a Scandinavian cabin. My friend Charlie had often told me about these classes in their live form, in a style called gaga, which is meant to rid the dancer of self-consciousness. There we were, dozens of us, swooping and whirling and leaping in little frames on everybodys laptop. It was ridiculous. It was the kind of thing you could get away with in the first fresh days of apocalypse.
